Wikileaks founder Julian Assange will land in Canberra this evening a free man, having pleaded guilty and being sentenced for espionage with no more time to serve.

It related to a single charge of conspiring to obtain and disclose classified US National Defence documents.

US correspondent Dan Mitchinson says Assange will likely come out of this with a book deal and a few talk show appearances.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
And finally, a Northern irishman has broken the world record
for the fastest assembly of mister potato head. Declan McPherrin
managed to get the torso and the eyes and the
arms and the ears and the hat and the nose
and the mustache onto the toy in fifteen point five
rather five point fifteen seconds. He recorded the whole thing
on video and he was stoked.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
God, Oh my god. International correspondence with Ends and Eye Insurance,
Peace of Mind for New Zealand Business, Better.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Work stories everyone, Dan Mitchinson, US Correspondence with US.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Now, Hey, Dan, where are you going to go from there?
In life? Right? Once you've accomplished.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Mate, I'm still trying to teach the two year old
that the ears go in the ear holes and the
arms go underneath. So I've got a long way to
go before my one's doing it in five point one
five seconds, do you know what I mean?

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (00:55):
How are you people feeling about Julian and Nissan's getting
off the hook? Do you want to put him in
the slammer for like seven hundred years?

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
I mean, it's been kind of quiet on this end surprisingly,
I mean, believe it or not.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
And as you just heard, I mean, he pleaded guilty.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
He when he heard that he was a freeman in court,
he you know, he smiled.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
And under this deal with the US Justice.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Department, I mean, he is leaving court, he has had
his time already served in the UK, and he's going
back home to Australia. So I mean, I think the
Justice Department agreed, you know, to this deal. I think
it dragged out a little bit longer than it would
have had this not been about getting him out of
there in the first place. So I think it just

(01:35):
became one of these stories that sort of grew bigger
and bigger as as time progressed.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
To tell you the truth, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
I mean I am. I am glad I never have
to hear another story about him being in jail or
in the Ecuadorian embassy or whatever.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Are you Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
I think it's one of those stories that sort of
popped its head up in the news cycle every once
in a while, and people were just wondering, how is
this going to Andesy to stay there forever and ever?

Speaker 2 (02:01):
And then this deal came along, and then there were
those that were kind of.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Skeptic that it was actually going to go through, and
you know, he got a charter flight over there today.
And you know, as you mentioned, he's he's a free man.
I'm sure he's going to be making the talk shows
rounds and will likely come out with a book or
something like that in the near future. So I'm sure
we'll be talking about him at some point down the road.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
What's the gag would have been changed to for Trump?

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Well, this is kind of interesting, I gotta tell you,
howther because what it does is it kind of feel well,
frees Donald Trump from commenting publicly in a very generalized
way about witnesses and jurors in the hush money trial.
But it has its limits, and there are things that
he won't be able to talk about until he's sentenced,
which is coming up on July eleventh.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
So what the judge is saying is this, you know.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
We're letting you say a few things, but we're still
trying to protect the integrity of the proceedings in the
court and we don't want you to reveal who the
jurors are. But I mean, Trump's team still isn't happy
because they're saying that the ruling is unlawful. Trump op
obviously wanted to say whatever he wanted to at the
debate this week with Joe Biden, And if I were
to bet on this, Heather, I would say he is

(03:06):
still likely to violate terms of this agreement. I think
he's going to let things slip. I think he's going
to go, what the heck, it's only money. I've been
fined ten thousand dollars, which is, you know, pocket change
to the guy already by by you.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Know, saying things I shouldn't already.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
So I mean, we'll see what happens Thursday night at
Friday your time. But he still faces up to four
years in prison when he sentenced July eleventh, But you know,
as we mentioned before, he'll likely get probation or community
service something like that.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Dan, have you got your order and already for Hillary
Clinton's new book?

Speaker 3 (03:35):
I don't, but I'll tell you what I do find interesting.
And you know, in all fairness, with the election coming up,
I'll likely read that the timing of this book, I
mean it's a little it's a little suspect. I mean,
is this tied into the fact that with the election
coming up, the publishers feel there's going to be more
public interest in politics as we get closer to November.
Or is it because you're going to have a very

(03:56):
prominent Democrat out in front of the cameras right now
and on the talk shows and on the internet getting
a lot of press abouties who can talk up President
Biden and go after Trump. And by the way, her husband,
Bill Clinton has a book coming up just coming out
a couple of months after this as well.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
He's the Clinton's gonna make some money off us. I
think thank you, Dan as always appreciated, or to talk to
you in a couple of days at Stan Mitchinson, US correspondent.
