Oliver Peterson: Australian correspondent on Barnaby Joyce's efforts to give up alcohol

Barnaby Joyce stuck to his word after he promised he would cut back on alcohol - and lost 15kgs to show for it.

In February, a video surfaced of an intoxicated Joyce sprawled out on a Canberra sidewalk after a drunken night out.

Australian correspondent Oliver Peterson says Joyce was clearly embarrassed by the events of the video.

floor because she's going to vote with her conscience. Now,

this is really upset the Prime Minister because it is
the first of July. So he was out and about
this morning trying to sprink the fact that he's got
more cost of living relief for every single Australium with
tax cuts with electricity credits and he is really cheesed
off today, Heather, because Fatima payment is dominating the headlines
and dominating the heads for the fact that not only

does it seem almost archaic that you can't have your
own view and they want to create a very diverse
party that there are obviously many people within the Labor
Party who just hold the caucous rule as the number
one priority and never break the caucus rule. What was
really interesting his moments ago in the Parliament they swore
in the new Governor General, Sam Boston, and Tanya Plibersek

was seen giving Adam mc payman quite a significant embrace
and you know you could sort of lip read that
she was saying everything would be okay. Plipsec of course
to nemesis of Anthony Albanezi. So when the polls today
showed that the coalitions ahead on the two party per
third question, the Prime Minister has got a lot of
headaches too, Right.

How's Barnaby going on? You know, giving up the booze.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
He's done pretty well in only a matter of months.
He says he's lost about fifteen kilograms. He looks like
he's looking a lot better. And he said he woke
up that morning after obviously that video surface, it turns
out now he was not talking to anybody on that
mobile side, and in fact the mobile phone was upside down.
That's how blind drunk Barnaby Joyce was on the streets
of camera, but he's now admitted that. He said he's embarrassed,

so reckoned he woke up the next morning, quit the smokes,
quit the booze. Hasn't touched them, he says, Look, I
might go back to it at some stage. I think
one of the most interesting comments is he says that
all the functions he goes to now he has to
actually talk to people, and they're really quite boring. We
have to engage with those people he's trying to talk
to it. All the functions of your teams.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
Yeah, well, how boozed are they? I mean you should
only have like a couple of drinks that a function.
They must all be absolutely off their faces. Listen, do
you have any inside Wood is twigging and to sue Facebook.

Speaker 2 (02:36):
Well, this is interesting because he's taking this into California. Now.
You know, everybody sees across Facebook fake ads, and if
they were going to be running fake ads on newstalg
ZVB or six PR on my radio station where I work,
then we'd be in all sorts of strife for scamming people.
Facebook seems to get away with this and they use
people like Andrew Twiggy Forest's face, and the algorithm targets
vulnerable people. They think, O if Andrew forres is, it's okay,

I'm going to all of a sudden give you a
thing thousand dollars in them a bank account's cleared out.
He's had a bit of a win here so far
in the California courts header which could pay the way
now for thousands of cases coming before Facebook and just
make the bastards honest about who's advertising money. They're taking
a two hundred billion dollars a year company taking in

advertising revenue and they don't actually check it. The cooks
who are giving them the money are legit. This has
a widespread ramification around the world for these social media giants.
You need to be governed like traditional media is your
radio station in mind.
