The Republican National Convention's come to a close - with Donald Trump emerging as the party's pick for US President.

Trump officially accepted his nomination - and delivered his first public address since he was shot in the ear on Sunday.

His convention speech has gone down as the longest in modern American history.

If elected, Trump says he'll swiftly implement a range of bold promises - including tackling inflation, immigration and foreign policy.

1News US Correspondent Logan Church told Jake Tame Trump was almost getting emotional when speaking about his attack.

“It was a speech though overall, despite how long it was, it certainly riled up the Republican base. The atmosphere in that room was electric.”

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well he's done it. Donald Trump has given his much
anticipated speech at the Republican National Convention. He started by
speaking about the assassination attempt on him last week.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
When I heard a loud, whizzing sound and felt something
hit me really, really hard on my right ear. I
said to myself, Wow, what was that. It can only
be a bullet and moved my right hand to my

(00:33):
ear brought it down. My hand was covered with blood.

Speaker 1 (00:38):
At times, Donald Trump seemed almost philosophical.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
I'm not supposed to be here tonight, not supposed to
be here.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
At the end of his speech, he promised to be
a president for all.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I am running to be president for all of America,
not half of America, because there is no victory in
winning for a half of America.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
One News US correspondent Logan Church to spend the week
at the Republican National Convention and is with us this evening,
Calder Logan, what did you make of Donald Trump's speech?

Speaker 3 (01:23):
Well, good evening, Jack. Well, it was certainly a record
setting speech, if anything, just because of how long the
thing was. It went over well over an hour, and
from my very great research since it appeared to be
one of the longest acceptance speeches of a party candidate
at one of these conventions. Well, look, Donald Trump promised
that this would be a speech promoting unity in a

(01:44):
divided America. Very much started that way, as you said,
and as you heard from Donald Trump himself. He started
speaking about his experience during the shooting, describing how there
were bullets flying towards him. There was a round of
applause as he describes the quote brave secut service agents
rushing onto the stage, finishing with that quite poignant quote,

(02:04):
so I'm not supposed to be here tonight. But then
it very quickly descended into what we would typically see
and hear from Donald Trump, which was a loss of
very fiery rhetoric. He accused the Democrats of weaponizing democracy,
saying they were the ones that had been trying to
steal the election, which is somewhat ironic considering those are
some of the charges that Donald Trump himself faces. It

(02:27):
was a speech though overall, despite how long it was
that cercially riled up the Republican base. The atmosphere in
that room was electric. However, this won't be an election
decided by the Republican base or the Democrat base for
that Master it's going to be decided by the people
in the middle. Those are undecided as to which way
they're going to vote come November, and it is ours

(02:50):
as to whether this is going to be the speech
that will draw them to Donald Trump. Because in many ways,
we got a best of new Donald Trump, but we
also got a little bit of what we've always seen
of Donald Trump.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Yeah, well, I think that's totally fear. It took us
through the way he actually told the story about the
assassination of temp What was your view, Logan, Did he
seem like he had kind of gone over the shock
of it all?

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Yet I don't think you could ever get over the
shock of having bullets shot at you, especially in a
situation like that. In many ways, he seems borderline emotional
talking about some of this. I think it's also important
to note, and you weren't seen this if you were
just listening, but as Donald Trump spoke about his experience,
the production team put up giant photos of many of

(03:35):
those moments you would have seen over the recent days.
Some of the incredible photographs taken by press photographers who
were there covering the rally, just like any other rally,
one now quite famous picture show Donald Trump speaking with
the bullets. The blur of the bullet was in through
the air and that was put up on the big
screens behind Donald Trump as he describes that experience. And

(03:58):
it was quite surreal actually watching a leading presidential candidate
and former president speak quite candidly about the experience of
actually being shot and almost losing his life. That's something
we've never seen before really, so quite some incredible scenes.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Yeah, it was remarkable. Thank you so much, Logan. That
