Hayden Wilde has earned a silver medal after getting overtaken by long-time British rival Alex Yee around 200 metres from the end of the men's Olympic triathlon.

Compatriot Dylan McCullough produced a selfless effort to drag Wilde back into the race on the bike after he was more than a minute down on the swim.

Sportstalk host D'Arcy Waldegrave unpacks the victory further.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Stopped talking to me while the air break's finishing. Darcy
Walder Grave, I.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Don't know when it's finishing. I can't see you tom
over here. I'm in the wilderness. I'm way out in
the background here. That's how big this studio is.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
A million people watched that race last night. You know,
we almost missed the crucial, crucial moment because the TV
people started focusing on the two French guys were having
a ding dong for the bronze, and we're going, oh, yeah,
that's quite good. Then everyone's saying, O, Hayden's got it.
Hayden's got it. And when they came back to the
front of the race, they went, hold on that, ye
fellow is only two meters behind, and then he was
right past.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
We sound surprised that a host broadcast will focus in
tile on their own athletes.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Wow.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Never saw that coming.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Did I? Oh god, it must see Hayden. Hayden was
at the end and then this fellow just zoops passed
and he was fifteen seconds behind. He wins by seven.
That's a hell of a burst and four hundred meters
he was.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
Running through a treacle at the end of it was Hayden,
he was absolutely gassed. He's talking to Mike Hosking this morning.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
It's just like I was just like I had nothing, nothing.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
I had nothing.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
And you can see you later Alex.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Though the timing of that run. As sad as I
am for Hayden, wild as excited as I am for Alex,
there was a phenomenal finish. He knew exactly what he
had to do when he had to do it, and
he never gave up.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Best triathd in history. Huge crowd on the side, amazing scenery,
great on the telly, I mean it's on the telly.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
The drones, the drones. The involvement of drones and sport
over the last few years has been amazing, especially in
events like the triathon, which takes in a lot of
downtown Paris, and it was beautiful to watch.

Speaker 1 (01:33):
The crowd huge.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
I'm presuming they didn't have to pay, No, that's why
there were so many people there.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
That's a trick.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
It was just heaving. It was twenty twenty five deep.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
If he did to save it, Eden Park would always
have a full house.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Well it's a thought around the NPC to do that,
but that's another argument for another day. Why would you
do that, right?

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah, yeah, five bucks or ten buck kids free, all.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
These pisky kids they always getting suffered free.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
A full stadium was so much better than a full paying,
empty stadium.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
It did look brilliant, a bit deflating, but that's all good.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
That's what it is. That's called sport. That's why we
love it. As I say, best movie on Sky ever
a million people watching. Rob Pennies resigns with the Crusaders.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
He's not re signed, but he's not being exited stage
left like snaggleports. That's not happening. They've gone through a
massive review. There are fifty three work on points covering
the whole organization that two independents looked at. They presented
their findings and the Crusaders meant, that's okay. Robbie stayed

(02:36):
for another year, But nothing on what happens the year
after that storm. Nothing about that. We've got next year.
We need to ruin entitle one thing. I do know,
I think I do know. They're not going to go
to the Northern Hemisphere at the start of the season.
That's not happening. That wasn't a great idea and that's
been proven to be insane before when the Crusaders, after

(02:57):
the city fell over, decided to go to the other
side of the world did the whole season player game
over there. They did a whole season away from home,
and the straw that broke their back was traveling to
the other side of the world. They came back and
a little light wild in the final against the Red
stage just completely ran out of steam. The old cooked.
They had nahing left. So we'll talk with Colin Mansbridge

(03:17):
on the program the seeding. Yes, we are deviating from
the Olympic Games.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
Good.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
We need a breath every now and then.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
But we got to We've got rowing tonight.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
We've got lots double skulls of the men and the women,
Metal Chances means for women's four and also Twigger Macintosh
in the semi finals sexanas scene.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
