Another problem for Aratere. 

The Interislander ferry's expected to be out of action for a few days after crashing into the dock in Wellington. 

More than 100 passengers and 40 crew were on board - none was injured. 

Maritime Lawyer Troy Stade told Heather du Plessis-Allan that speaking with the crew, there are concerns generally about how things have gone over the last few months.

in Wellington Harbor yesterday. They tried to blame the wind
and then we found out there was absolutely no wind
in the city at the time. So what is it?

So well? I mean that's it's been a little over
twenty four hours, so we've only just ourselves really gotten
engaged with the matter. It's I know, that's an answer
you guys hate to hear that it is. It's under
an active investigation. So we're still trying to have you
not spoken to the correct I've spoken to one of them.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Is it the one who was steering the boat?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
He was involved in the in the deck EPs.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
What did happened?

Just a series of factors with the wind being a
driver seems to be what when the likely one?

But I mean, t are you in Wellington?

I'm not in Wellington, but esterday see looking at the
met Service for yesterday, looks like gusts of up to
seventy two kph about three pm yesterday, So that where
is that? Kelburn? I believe Kelburn?

Okay, because we've had like honestly, Troy yesterday, we had
texts from everybody, including speaking to a city council. It
was like, no, there's no windo out there, eight miles
per hour, like nothing. It was still the harbor was glassy.
Where does Surely if there's a wind that's big enough,
like a gust that's big enough to push a ship
into a drawbridge, it's got to be a biggish one,
doesn't it.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah. I mean again, that's that's the fact that we're investigating.
I would just say, you know, a vessel of that size,
if it does get hit by a by wind, you
know alongside broadside, that the effect of that will be
increased significantly, Okay, as with a sale. But I just
also like to point out, you know, it's a relief

that no one was injured. I understand the passengers were
able to leave the vessel about an hour after the event,
so it's you know, it's it's a great relief to
everyone involved that it wasn't as bad as perhaps it
may have otherwise have been.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
So, Troy, how are the crew feeling about this, because, yeah,
their reputations don't don't feel awesome at the moment.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah, and you know, obviously we're acting for the crew,
so their their interests are first and foremost in our minds.
There are concerns speaking with the crew, there are concerns
just generally about how how things have gone over the
last couple of months. I mean, it's you know, I
will allow you to to draw whatever inferences you like

from that, but at the the interests of the crew was.

The same crew who were on board when they drove
it into the beach.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
I'm still getting getting a full crew list there, but
I believe not.

Speaker 1 (03:12):
Oh so the guy that you spoke to about this incident,
was he on it last time?

Speaker 2 (03:18):
I don't believe so.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Okay, Well, thank god, Although on the that's on on
the bad side, it does mean that we have lots
of crew who are doing this rather than just a few.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Well, as I said, the investigations ongoing, so it's it's
a little soon for us to jump to conclusions as
to CREWE involvement in the event. But hopefully, you know,
as the investigation got carries on and more facts come
to light, we'll get into the Troy.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Obviously crew were right, the boat was under manual steering.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Right, that that is true. You know, obviously at that
point there was a hand steering issue.

Speaker 1 (03:57):
So it's an entirely scenario that who was holding on
to it, he was steering, just drove it into the drawbadge.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Again, it's too too soon to come to that conclusion,
but I suspect that there are a number of external
factors of player as well.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Like one which will don't say wind, what else?

Speaker 2 (04:19):
Weather? Oh?
