Darleen Tana says they have support within the Green Party to stay.

They've refused the Party's repeated requests to resign from Parliament.

Tana today argued Parliament's proportionality isn't affected, because Te Pati Maori is submitting their vote via proxy - aligned with Green positions.

Tana says they're not staying for the money, but because they're kaupapa-driven.

"I'm listening to my communities - Green Party members and non-members alike - who have been constantly calling me and reminding me that they voted party Green for Darleen."

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Former Green MP Darlene Tana has finally written back to
the Green Party and said they will not resign from parliament.
It is a very long letter at seven pages long,
and it argues that the party should not use the
walker jumping laws. Let's talk to them, Darlene. Hello, Darling,
is it not awkward being there with people who don't
want you there?

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Okay, thank you? Actually I'm quite fine. I came in
here to represent my communities, to uphold Modi mana Tapu
and that's what we're doing.

Speaker 1 (00:28):
And how do you feel about the fact that that
we've had public polls say most of New Zealand don't
want you in there.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Look again, I'm listening to my communities, Green Party members
and non members alike who have been constantly calling me
and reminding me that they actually voted Party cream for Darnine.
So they're the ones who are insisting that I stay
in here as an independent. And we've broke out our
game plans and that's what we're doing.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
You say, we've worked out our game plans and you
got support from within the.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Party, absolutely, absolutely, but not just within the party, within
within the communities. You know, I took a lot of
work working in the Gahete through to Tai Tokuto, working
in the in the ocean space out to Morning and
our Toy. All these ones are wanting me to do it.
I'm gonna do it. I'm not I'm not big.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
On talking so in party supporting you.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
I don't know that I'm at liberty to name names.
I've been a little concerned, to be very honest with you,
I've taken my principal stance and dissenting with the Green
partty co leadership. And what I'm hearing on the ground
of many of my supporters is that they're feeling Ah,
you know, the cancel culture is a thing, and so

(01:44):
I'm not going to name names, but there are certainly
supporters out there.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
Is it within the Pacificagreens.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
I'm just talking generally. You know, I've had some involvement
with specific Agreens, but you know, Mary non Martyr, I.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Was asking them about them specifically. But because they have
very publicly supported you, haven't.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
They well, I you know, I think they stood up
for what they saw were injustices against Pacific A Green.
I might be just a tipping point. They did talk
to concerns that they've held over many years, Darlene.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Look, one of the reasons people think you're staying in
there is for the pay. Is that why you're hanging on?

Speaker 2 (02:24):
No, I'm and here. I've always been a copepper driven person.
My fin no, my my hatpoo, my EWI know that,
and my community know that I will keep working to
restore modio of them on and now tamai key forever
and a day on spell of an oily rag.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
If I have to do you reckon, They're going to
pull the Wacker jumping law on you in a couple
of weeks.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Ultimately that's going to be their decision. I've been extremely
guffed to be you know, have effectively a malicious campaign
misdisinformation against me, So you know, I'm more interested in
getting the correct information out to the party members and
I trust that they will just take their decisions.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
How do you treate your chances though, because it feels
like Chloe's gearing up for the same.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
Well, gen as I said, miss disinformation, it's a thing,
canceled culture, it's a thing. I don't have the gift
of the gab. I'm not out there. I'm more of
a te towel. Auntie in the background, holding the fort,
keeping everybody together, and just you know, the hands on
person actually doing it. So I'm not you know, I'm

(03:36):
not spending my time out there talking up large and
just alongside people actually doing the money.

Speaker 1 (03:41):
If they do pull the wacker jumping legislation on you,
are you prepared to take this to court to fight this.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
I haven't made such considerations, to be honest. I'm just
asking for people to you know, we really need to
think seriously about this. I mean, what does this say
about democracy and ladle? You know, when you have politicians
who are going to oust an MP who was elected
in by by the public, I think it's said it's
a very you know, dangerous president to be to be frank,

(04:09):
and you know, I'm going to point back to the
Green Party Socker Pepper, their own you know, wise respected
leaders that are called you know Rod Donald or Jeneck Fitzimmons,
Matidia to Day or more recently James Shaw. You know,
they all talked to this.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
How can your story change so much when they were
doing the inquiry into what was going on in your
husband's business.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
I'm not sure that I understand your question. How do
you mean my story.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Change According according to the Inquirer, the lawyer who was
doing the inquiry, your your story would change consistently, so
you would say that you didn't know anything about an allegation.
Then you would admit, oh, yeah, you did know a
little bit about the allegation, but actually it was him
dealing with it. And there was no consistency in what
you were saying. Why did why did it keep happening?

Speaker 2 (04:53):
I think it didn't. It didn't, you know, I wasn't
changing my story. What I was struggling with was many
of these incid it's for happening where I was not
actually involved directly, and I was trying to understand what
was going on, So I needed to ask around, you know,
find emails, find text messages from others from within the

(05:14):
company to try to ascertain what actually happened. So as
things came to light, that's what I put onto the
table with the investigator. I refuged absolutely that my story changed.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
Absolutely refute that why'd you go around to one of
the guy's workplaces after he'd left your husband's work and
have a shouting match with them.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
I was walking to the ferry and he was standing
right there, and I asked him just to you know,
do your money. And that was that he made a
police report about it. You can say what you like
in police reports. There was no further action taken, and
I didn't actually see a need to go further with
that thrown up out of proportion in the media, right,

(05:54):
And that's just one of the things that happened.

Speaker 1 (05:55):
I've never understood this was what was the allegation that
he took to the police, you know.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
The allegation was that I had approached of it as
a place of work and said some things.

Speaker 1 (06:06):
All right, Darling, thank you for your time, appreciating best
of luck dealing with this. Is Darling Tanner, Independent MP.
