Jetstar is on the receiving end of a class action lawsuit over its decision to hand out travel vouchers to customers who were impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The lawsuit filed in the Federal Court claims the airline was legally obliged to refund tickets and is pushing for the money to be returned directly to customers with interest.

Australian correspondent Oliver Peterson says tens of thousands of customers could potentially receive compensation.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oliver Peterson six pr Perth Live Presenters with us Aoli.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
I reckon, we watch countless episodes every single day in
our household a Pepper Pig, and now we go to Paddington,
so Paddington's pretty cool to her. Oh.

Speaker 1 (00:11):
The thing about Pepper Pig, which is good is that
it's about a seven minute episode, so you could absolutely
keep track because it's not just rolling from one thing
to the other, like you've got to play each one
after the other so you know what's going on. And
then also a ollie, you've got the good one where
you can be like one more episode and it doesn't
have to be half an hour.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah, I know. And coming up in your Instagram feeds
shortly will be the Pepper Pig open top bus tour
in London and head I reckon that Iggy might be saying, Mum,
I want to go over there.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
Just a thought on Bluey quickly, okay, seeing as like
this is what we've descended into now, I love it,
but sometimes I feel just a little bit sad about
how how perfect that family is. And I'm not do
you not feel like that percent?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
But I'll tell you I am like bandit. I love
teasing the kids. I'm big into, you know, just taking
the mickey out of them. But anyway, that's our parenting segment. Heather.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Oh yeah, I'm like Bandit's wife. I remember to take
everything everywhere, all of the time and look after the kids. Yeah,
and I guess if you're bandit then you forget everything
all the time. Hey listen, So have we got a like,
are we serious about the fact that we've got a
recessionary problem here in Australia.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Well, de Lloyde reckons we might. And they've done a
big survey of all the chief financial offices in Australia
and they're predicting over the next tour months gear up
for these one hundred thousand Australians will become unemployed. The
unemployment rate sits at four point two percent, it's expected
to head towards four point five percent. And we're also
seeing the data edicated in the job ads. At the moment,
a Sekh puts out information every single month and there

(01:43):
are just a lack of jobs which are being posted
on the Sikh website. Where I am on this side
of the country in Wa of course, the home of
iron or in the engine room of the Australian economy.
Lots of the big miners are putting staff off, lots
of the lithium miners are putting staff off. So yeah,
we've got a bumpy road ahead.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Yeah, I think guys may well do. What's going on
with Jetstar. How much trouble are they in?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Well, they could be in a heap of trouble because
they have just blatantly ignored the Australian consumer laws during
the COVID nineteen pandemic and allegedly not refunded or provided
credits to hundreds of thousands of customers who were delayed
by all of those COVID imposed lockdowns. Now they're saying
that anyone who held tickets for flights that were canceled
between the first of January twenty twenty and November one,

(02:24):
twenty two can join a class action which has been
launched by Echo Law. So we are talking here about
tens of thousands of customers, Heather, this could be a
big payday from Jetstar. Now.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Of all of the things Ollie that would fall in
sales during a cost of living crisis, it surprised me.
It surprises me that it's chicken sales.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Me too, because Ozzie's love chicken, and when you think
about it, they're probably right. We on average US meat
eaters would consume at least fifty kilograms of chicken a year.
That's a bit of a scary thought when you put
it in that kind of context. But for the first
time KFC have seen sales decline in Australia and the
survey says that lots of Aussies actually think the chicken

(03:07):
is becoming too expensive, so they're going without meat. Because
of course chicken is widely considered in Australia anyway the
cheapest variety of all the meats. So this is a
real cost of living concern and showing that we are
not taking the bites out of our weekly meal consumption
when it comes to chicken, and what are we going
for instead noodles or something that's a little bit cheaper.
So yeah, that's a really interesting observation.

Speaker 1 (03:29):
We're basing this on chicken sales at the supermarket, where
at one hundred percent is the most cost effective meat,
or are we basing it on KFC.

Speaker 2 (03:35):
KFC, because yeah, you go to the supermarket, chi, no,
you're going to get nine bucks for a chicken and
feed the whole family.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
So old chicken drumsticks. I mean that's like you get
a thousand of them for nine.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Dollars and chicken tenders.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Yeah, good stuff, Ollie, Thank you very much, Oliver Peterson.
