Kiwi farming experts are paying tribute to the women in their lives as part of this year's International Day of Rural Women.

Plenty of organisations have taken the day to celebrate the women making waves in the nation's rural sector - and The Country spoke to some of the Kiwi women making a difference and smashing the 'grass ceiling'.

Host Rowena Duncum explains further.

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hello Rowe Helloa.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
How did you celebrate the International Day of Rural Women.

Speaker 1 (00:14):
Well, I had some pretty kick ass women on the
show today, which was awesome. No, Jamie Mackay, of course,
he's in New York, living it up, seeing the New
York next going to the top of the Freedom Power
so it was a man free zone. But now I
was chatting to Emma Poul and Katie mel Now Katie
was the first female president of Federated Farmers. Emma was
the first female New Zealand Young Farmer of the Year.

(00:36):
And Emma had found this amazing quote and I thought
you would quite like this. It was a super old
magazine and it said women that can cut the throat
of sheep and lift heavy loads will not make good
future mothers of the children of our nation. And she said,
you know, dan's what women were up agains back in
the day. You know, they couldn't be farmers. There was

(00:57):
no place for them on farm. Their places at home
raising the children, and says, look here I am. Here's Katie.
Many many years later cutting throats lifting heavy loads and
giving motherhood a damn good crack. And I just think
they are amazing role models for anyone wanting to get
involved in agriculture.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
We are very very cool. Speaking of doing things with sheep,
We've got some awesome sharers in this country. Where they
headed off to.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yeah, so they're off to Australia the fiftieth anniversary Trans
Tasman Sharing and Wool Handling Series. We found the final
members of the team to head to Australia. They're heading
there this week. The big competition is in Western Australia
over labor weekends. But we did have the first Trans
Tasman events just on the weekend, just been in Saturday

(01:41):
at Wymatty and it was the blade sharing you know,
the ones with the shears, not the handpieces, doing it
old school and luck first blood to the kiwi solent
type that continues in Western Australia.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yay Rod, Thank you very much. Roe Duncan filling in
on the country for Jamie mackay while he's on holiday.
