Mike Egan: Restaurant Association President on Uber Eats expanding service into regional New Zealand

Uber Eats will be expanding into 12 new locations across the country, focusing on regional towns.

From next month, its food delivery will be available in smaller towns like Taupō, Levin, Whakatāne, Timaru and Wānaka. 

Restaurant Association President and Monsoon Poon Owner Mike Egan says it's perfect timing - just before summer. 

"I can see the campgrounds, people who will be sick of having snags on the barbecue and order up some Uber Eats. If you've had too many drinks in the sun , just drive to your favourite restaurant."

Hey Mike, Mike. Now not everybody loves the old Uber Eats,
But what do you reckon? Is this going to be
good for these towns and the restaurants they're all bad?

Oh? I think it's gonna be good. Yeah, I mean,
we use uber eats. It's just another arrow in the
quiver of getting to an audience, and people need a
bit of convenient sometimes, and some of those locations that
you've talked about, I can see, you know, the campgrounds
are getting people will be sick of having snow was
on the barbecue and order up some Uber eats if
you had too many drinks in the sun to drive

to your favorite restaurants.

Yeah, okay, So as a consumer, I see no downside
and Uber eats, right, it opens up all these restaurants
that I can't be theft going to. What's the downside
for restaurants.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Well, there is a commission component to it, but if restaurants,
I mean it might be five scene the sooner. It's not.
It's just a nice to have. It's great to get
your brand out to people that maybe can't travel into
the city to try your food, or they've got other
transporter shoes and they can get something to eat. We've

got one guy's head one hundred and thirty deliveries of
their Vietnamese for it's never even been to our restaurant,
but that he likes this one desh and orders it
all the time. So yeah, just another audience brilliant.

I'm tired of people knocking the Uber eat. Do you
know what can I say? This Uber eats everywhere, please,
and also Uber everywhere. If I have to go to
a small town and there's not Uber eats an uber,
I'm always disappointed because I'm like, oh wow, inconvenient, and
this is what I had to do in Melbourne, which

(02:10):
actually isn't a small town, so more for me. But
I just couldn't be I don't know, I'm not gonna
make a very strong argument. Couldn't be faft. And so
in the end would put the little boy to bed
and then one of us would go out sort of
wandering the streets looking for something to eat. It's really inconvenient.
