Tegan Rose Vickery: More Than Just A Fashion Show organiser on granting of liquor license for Suicide Prevention event

A Suicide Prevention fundraiser in Dunedin has been granted a liquor license at a special hearing, despite concerns from Police and others that it would be inappropriate at such an event.

‘More Than Just A Fashion Show’ will be held at Wall Street mall tomorrow night, with proceeds going towards the Life Matters Suicide Prevention Trust.

Event organiser Tegan Vickery tells Heather du Plessis-Allan she’s disappointed that the light she was trying to shine on mental health awareness was overshadowed by liquor license issues.

Hey, some good news for common sense. That fundraiser and
Dunedin that we were originally talking to Mike King about
a couple of days ago, has now got permission to
serve booze. You'll remember the story. Police opposed the booze license,
saying it was inappropriate for a fundraiser for suicide prevention
to have a liquor license, but it got in the
end today anyway. Teagan rose Vickery is the events organizer. Hey, Tagan, Hello,

because this is tomorrow, isn't it? Yes?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Tomorrow?

Speaker 1 (00:25):
Yeah, are you relieved?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
I am. I kind of can get back into what
I was meant to be doing today and getting finishing
off organizing the show.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Listen, from the very outset, this opposition to you guys
serving alcohol seemed ridiculous to me? Did it seem as
ridiculous to you?

Speaker 2 (00:44):
A little bit? Like? I could understand where the police
are coming from and where their concerns were coming from.
But if they had if they wanted to sort of
look at mine, so index please, and they sort of
needed to look at every other fundraiser that was a
out any sort of revisible health or mental health. So
it does feel a little bit picky. I feel like

it's a bit of murge.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Yeah, and surely if the point is to assist people
who are trying to deal with, you know, preventing suicide,
then the best thing to do is give them as
much money as possible, in which case you need to
serve alcohol in order to make as much money as possible.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Right, Well, it's not a need. I'll make that very
real clear. It's not a need to serve alcohol. It
was just sort of when you go to a fashion
show or an event, more often than not, there's an
option to have a glass of wine because it makes.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
It more fun, and then you part with your cash
a bit more freely. That's the point.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yeah, it does lessen up people's focket's a little bit
more if they've got if they've got a wine with them,
But most of the proceeds for life Matters will be
coming from the grapple sales on the night.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Yeah. Now, on the other hand, I suppose you can't
be too unhappy about all of the publicity you've got,
can you.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
No, I don't. Well, I'm not necessarily disappointed that there's
been a bit of publicity. I am disappointed that the
light that I was trying to shine on mental health
awareness was sort of shadowed by the problem people seemed
to have around me serving alcohol at the event.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
And then presumably also the problem people seem to have
with the Mike King comments.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, but yeah, that's a whole other story in itself.
But that's Myke's journey. That's got nothing to do with me,
and I'm just out here trying to do my thing.
