Speaker 1 (00:00):
Barry soapers here.

Speaker 2 (00:00):
Hey Barry, good afternoon.

Speaker 1 (00:02):
Right, Hey, the monument Nui, the sinking. We've had the
report from the Court of Inquiry and it's basically it's
human error, it's an experience. It's all the worst. It's things.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Do we have a psyche problem with New Zealand when
it comes to auto pilots. I mean, remember the interal
Into ferry that ran aground last year because apparently it
was on autopilot. This one, though, must have been terrible
to be on board when you think about it, because
it scraped across the bottom of the reef on several occasions.

(00:33):
They couldn't see the internal damage at the time, and
there was so much damage to the whole that it sank,
not surprisingly, but the inquiry says that the crew and
the commanding officer of the Munaway were undertrained and the
boat was not up to the task it was doing. Now,
the task was doing was a survey type task and

(00:55):
it was called on by Chogham. You remember it was
happening at the time to do that. And I found
it interesting that the chief of the Navy, Navy a
rare Admiral Garren Golding, he said there were a range
of issues, including the lack of commonality he used across
the fleet. Now, it means that if people need to

(01:16):
constantly adapt to new procedures each time they change ships.
And there are a number of ships I think about
eight in the New Zealand Navy. So if you're on
one ship and suddenly you transferred to another ship, you
basically don't know what you're doing, which is a bit
doesn't stand It certainly doesn't stand up to a lot
of scrutinies. It hasn't done with his inquiry, but standing

(01:39):
alongside his political boss due to Collins, the rare admiral
made something of an understatement saying it wasn't a good
day for the Navy.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
I think you need to understand that when we're conducting
our operations, we're conducting them globally, we conduct them in
very difficult and challenging environments and the responsibilities put on
our people. If they make mistakes, they have consequences and
significant consequences. So it's the complexity of what we asked
to do and the environment is not normal. But yes,

(02:09):
as part of it, outside it's a bad day for
the Navy. We've our reputation has taken a hit, and
we just as part of that owning it, and we
need to learn from it and get up thro it.

Speaker 4 (02:19):
I think the Navy, the Air Force, the Army, the
Defense Force know that I'm watching them all the time
in a really positive way. Is their auntie and their minister.
So look, I've got great confidence in them. I have
no problem dealing with difficult situations. It's how you then
learn from that, fix it, own it, just get on

(02:40):
and sort of. We need a big uplift in our
defense force funding and I can tell you that help
us on its way.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
Yeah, well that'll come in the budget. It'll be over
a number of years. And the timing is, I think
you said earlier, Ryan, is a bit of a problem
for them. Not million dollars, how many?

Speaker 1 (02:59):
I'm thinking how much more do you want to think?
To the bottom of the ocean. That's the question.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
It's a problem.

Speaker 1 (03:04):
The thought barer of Judith Colin standing over your shoulder
with one raised ironbrow looking at you would Judith, that's
enough to make you want to crash a ship our
front now exactly all right?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
The pole, Yeah, I mean you've given the figures out
and look it's it's been a bounce back, you'd have
to say at the center right over the last two poles.
You had the Red Research Pole on Radio New Zealand
spending part of their twenty five million dollar parting gift
from the Labor Party that their budget was boosted by

(03:36):
so they now can afford to do Poles had to
get that in run. But like Auntie Judith, but then
you know it's the curier taxpayer's union pole today. It
really confirmed what the read Research Pole told us. But
I find it amazing, as you said, would have been

(03:56):
at the really tail end or the beginning of sorry,
the Benjamin Doyle stuff, and I think people would have
found that pretty abhorrent, bad enough the TAMITHA Paul stuff.
And I find it absolutely incredible that the Greens actually
rose a percentage point to eleven acts up two point

(04:17):
three percent, but still you know they're not that high
and ten percent Old Winston's obviously been doing well, and
as you said, in the preferred prime minister stakes two
point three percent, New Zealand First is up by seven
and a half. Rightly to Party Maldi they are down
by two point two percent to four point three. They
deserve to be lower than that given their performance in

(04:39):
the House this week.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
Now the Treaty Principal's Bill, the Select Committee had their say,
how long do you reckon? We've got James Mega on
after five, but how long do you reckon before they
actually just get the rid of this thing from Parliament?

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Oh? Next week, Yeah, it'll be I would imagine done
next week. Interesting to see what the Maori Party does
when the final vote is. Let's hope they wait until
it's counted this time. But look, the interesting point that
David Seymour. Are you interviewing him? I think, aren't you?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
No, we're doing James, Meghan.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
James and Mega. Okay. The interesting point that James that
David Seymour made, and it's one that I've been making,
is you look at the long term and you look
at the the end of life Choice Bill that he
promoted a large number of opponents came out to that
piece of legislation and when it went to referendum it

(05:33):
passed by sixty five percent before and most of them
were opposed to I think it was about ninety percent
were opposed to that law. And that's that's what he
hopes clearly will happen with the peace in the long game.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
You lost the battle, but maybe winning the war yep,
and the long run. Barry, thank you for that.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Nice to talk to you, right for you as always, well,
Michael Berry.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
I don't think I'll ever call you uncle Berry.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Okay, that's weird. For more from Hither Duplessy Allen Drive,
