Chris Bean: Tangaroa College principal on the school urging students to cover uniforms in public

South Auckland's Tangaroa College has asked students to cover uniforms in public after videos of student brawls surfaced. 

Tension between students at Manukau schools is also spreading into online goading.

One video shows about 15 young people fighting, with one lying on the pavement being kicked in the head.

Principal Chris Bean says because Tangaroa College's uniform is so distinctive, he doesn't want students wearing it around and about. 

"We just wanted to be sure that they could move through from home to school and vice-versa in a safe way."

Now tanguet Or College in South Auckland is telling students
to cover up their uniforms in public. There has been
a spate of brawls between young people in the Manekow area.
One was caught on video involving about fifteen kids. One
student was getting his head kicked in while he lay
on the ground. Tanguaed Or College principal Chris beIN is
with us. Now, hey, Chris, are you ellen? This is
a sad day, isn't it.

Well, it's disappointing to be in this position.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Use Okay, are you doing this because you're worried about
the reputation of the school? Are you worried about the safety.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Of the kids? Now? I just like the stress. It's
the safety of the students, of our students traveling through
that area, and I just wanted to be sure that
they could move through from home to school and vice
versa in a safe way.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, that brawl where the kid was having his head
kicked in? Did that involve your students?

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Unfortunately it did.

Speaker 1 (00:50):
You was your student the one lying on the ground
getting kicked or the ones doing the kicking?

Speaker 2 (00:55):
No, our ones that we've been able to identify are involved.
In the assault.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Your students are the ones doing the assault.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
From what we can identify from that footage.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Yes, okay, So are your students really the ones who
are in danger?

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Hair, it's more so the ones who are in our
uniform and if they travel from like I said, at
home to school and pos versa, that there could be
repercussions for them just because they're in our uniform.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Oh okay, So are you worried that because some of
your students allegedly were the ones kicking the head in
of the kid, other students may now target students from
your school as like a kind of revenge.

Speaker 2 (01:30):
It could be an unfortunate side of all of us
taking place.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yess, what is going on here? Is this? And is
this something that underpins this? Is like an event that
started this?

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Look, I'm not sure on my south. It's caught me
unaware and I was only highlighted with what took place
last Wednesday in school. Do not know why this is
taking place?

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Have you spoken to the kids who are involved in
this sprawl?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
We have reached out to them and tried to get
information about their participation took place. So it's really at
that stage.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Okay, Well, when you say reached out. Are they not
at school at the moment.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
No, No, We've asked them to remain at home where
we take statements and work our way through everything, go
through our procedures.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
What's the final part? What is a likely punishment here?

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Depending on what we find with what took place, it
will be up to our discipline committee of the board,
and then I'll make a decision from that.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Okay, are the police involved?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Are we've involved the police? Yes?

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Are the police taking statements?

Speaker 2 (02:31):
I'm sure you'd have to, but they're being very positive
with my correspondents with him.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
I mean, they would have to know, Chris that these
kids were kicking a kid in the head. That's assault.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Like us, they'll be following through on what we know
and what they know and hopefully get the right information.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
