D'Arcy Waldegrave: Sportstalk host on the International Olympic Committee proposing ban on trans athletes

International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry is poised to act on a key election platform, by introducing a blanket ban on transgender women from female categories across all sports.

At this stage, an announcement is set for next year.

The IOC has previously left sex eligibility regulations to the governing bodies of individual codes, rather than applying a universal approach.

Speaker 1 (00:03):
Okay, what is going on with the IOC and the
transgendered women.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Well, the idea is that they don't want them anymore.
There's a new boss lady up there, and they're like, well,
I suppose to fall in line with a lot of
the other sports. It might just be a whole lot
easier if we're to have a blanket ban. They believe
there's new research come to light that suggests it is
a distinct advantage and I'm thinking it's not being determined yet,

(00:31):
that it might just be easier if that level. The
Olympics go, Yeah, no transgends to men and women's sports,
no trainstend of women, sorry in women's suit.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
But I was reading first thing this morning after it
broke internationally that the IOC says it hasn't made a decision.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
No, that's what I said. It hasn't made a decision,
but they're looking at it.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
But I thought that the news that was broken this
morning was that they will be announcing the decision they've
already made in February.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Well, what I know to beings who saw what you've
got me on the hobby. I saw one. It's not
Sebastian co is it? Who is it? Now?

Speaker 1 (01:06):
It's a Coventry.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Coventry, that's the one. I thought that, and look again,
someone through next door against might better find it. My
idea when I read it this morning was that, well,
we might do it, but we're not going to do
it yet. But it looks like it makes sense to us.
Does that not make sense to you? We got cross
wires here.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
No, I do you know what? Okay, I don't know.
I don't know what. We're just guessing what's going on here.
But I would not be surprised if they have already
made a decision set to be announced in the new year,
but in order for it not to look like it's predetermined,
they're saying they haven't made a decision.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
It's still working through the well. A lot of sports
have made their own. It always gets me around this though,
and I completely understand the argument for trans women and
how that operates, but in different sports, different strengths stage development,
he becomes a distinct advice understanding.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
Yeah, and think about the pr perspective of this, the
whole the last Olympic Games, the whole boxing thing, all
we talked about was the Algerian boxer.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Well, here's the thing that always gets me though. We
look at percentages. Now, there is a percentage of humans
in the world that are transgender, right, transgender women from men.
I don't know what that percentage except to be even smaller.
I'm not trying to say they haven't they're not relevant,
because they're very, very relevant human beings like everybody else.

(02:26):
But then you look at the percentage of those transgender
people who actually play sport to a high level, it
gets even smaller. And the ones that can actually compete
at the very very highest level we're talking about nobody. Yep.
It seems to be a lot of a storm made
up about something that's going to affect so few people. Correct,

(02:49):
you know, I can get it. But as I've always said,
the more research we do, the more we find out,
and the more we develop, the better position we are
going to be to go. Actually, you know what, we
need to do this because this is inherently unfair. So
I'm all for the science. I'm all for the investigation.
I'm all for the research. If you're going along, then
they got what.

Speaker 1 (03:09):
I'm all for the announcement when it comes, we've got
to go.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
It's good to do it.
