Jason Pine: Sportstalk host on Rory McIlroy winning back-to-back Masters titles

Rory McIlroy has joined an exclusive group of four to win the Masters back-to-back.

The Northern Irishman has claimed a one-stroke victory to successfully defend the title that he won last year to claim a career grand slam.

He joins Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods in winning consecutive titles at Augusta.

Sportstalk host Jason Pine recapped the action further.

Piney, Hello, Hello, Hea that for one hot minute, I
thought Rory had blown his lead, so did I.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
After the third round he was, and we all know this,
It's been said so many times. He was six shots
clear after two rounds. Nobody's ever led the Masters by
that march after two rounds. Then yesterday that lead completely evaporated.
So we went into today as joint leader, but still
leader none the less. But then double bogied early on
the fourth hole, I think, and I thought he's blowing it,

he has blown it. But instead he came back around
sort of army and corner, which is a pretty famous
part of Augusta, got a couple of birdies, held his nerve,
others were coming at him, some were dropping shots here
and there. Scottie Scheffler was looking good. But at the
end of it all, he puts in for bogey on
the eighteenth and all of a sudden, after not having
any green jackets two years ago, he's now got two

of them.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
That puts them in the I mean, did we have
any doubt that he was this great?

Speaker 2 (00:53):
I think we did because he hadn't won the Masters
two years ago. It was almost like it was this
it she couldn't scratch and won the other three majors,
and but August has always had this aura about it that,
you know, no major is greater than any other. But
I think if you win the Masters, everything that goes
with it, from the green jacket to the history to
the course itself, it feels as though if you don't

want it, you're not complete as an elite golfer. Now
that he's one two back to back, I think we
can remove any doubt.

Speaker 1 (01:20):
Now he can start. He can start taking drugs and
rolling his car, now, can't he He's mailed it.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
I guess that's I guess that's over to him. Yes,
up to everyone.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Hey, listen to the Warriors. Now that isn't what they've
managed to do there is incredible Do you reckon that
this will be the mental tick that they need to
be able to take this through the rest of the season.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I hope. So remember on Friday, I said to you
anything could happen in the NRL, And I was saying
it really as as trying to find some shred of
positivity about this seventeen game losing streak that had against
the Storm. But that was some performance on Saturday night,
not just the fact they broke that long standing windless
streak against the storm, but the manner in which they
achieved it. You know, they were physical, that were good

on attack. They defended against a storm side that is
going through a few problems, but a mix of some
of the younger guys, and then Roger Twi vasa check
into the centers and the physicality he brought. I just
thought it was a really good performance. To answer your question,
I hope so you look back and you think, Okay, well,
if there is a turning point in the season, if
they go on from here to be really really good,

you can probably look back at it and say, yeah,
that's where they actually believed that they had what it
took to be really great this year.
