It’s believed the government has the ability to shut down Gloriavale.

The West Coast religious commune's 85-year-old leader Howard Temple is a sex offender, having plead guilty to 12 charges, including indecent assault, mid-way through a trial.

The charges relate to offending back to the 1990s.

Leavers' lawyer Brian Henry told John MacDonald there are laws that allow the removal of families from harm, and the Corporations Investigation and Management Act.

He claims it's now, beyond doubt, a criminal organization of sex offending and there are options to step in, take over assets, and straighten out what's going on.

Henry says the Prime Minister needs to knock the heads together of every government department tasked with protecting little girls.

Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Canterbury Mornings podcast with John McDonald
from News Talk ZB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
I have always always thought it shameful that governments over
the years have turned a blind eye to what's been
going on at Gloria Vale. I'm not the only one.
Brian Henry feels the same. Brian Henry, he's the lawyer
who has represented former members of the community in various
court cases and he's been calling for something to be

(00:36):
done about Gloria Vale for a long time. And now,
with the community's leader, Howard Temple pleading guilty yesterday to
a dozen charges, some of which were representative and also
included five indecent assault charges, he's saying today that enough

(00:56):
is enough and he wants Christopher Luxen to act immediately.
Now I want to find out how you feel about this.
But first, Brian Henry is with us. Now, good morning,
Good morning. What do you mean when you say the
Prime Minister needs to act now?

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Well, people have to understand these charges. He's treated guilty too.
They call him historic, they go back to nineteen ninety eight.
But if you look at Glory Vale, the first overseeing Shepherd,
remember this is a person who's the right hand of God.
He was convicted, charged with sexual offenses against the young

(01:37):
females in the community. He got five years jail, He
gets rolled back into the community. God knows how a
by the authorities that they did. This community then gets
his next leader, and we now know that he's been
active for a long period of time inappropriately with the

(02:00):
young females in the community. And if you're seeing any
of the facts in court, now he's doing this to
girls delivering toast to him in front of his wife,
in front of his daughter, in front of the whole community,
and nobody stands up to protect it because nobody can so.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
The question, though, again is what do you mean when
you say the Prime Minister needs to intervene.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
This is an organization put together by a group of
male sex offenders who have been in control of it
for the last fifty years and they have bread their victims.
Now why I say the Prime Minister because someone needs
to knock the heads together of every government agency charged

(02:48):
with protecting libal girls. Nobody's doing anything. Prime Minister, He's
the only one that can stand up in act because
everybody else has been sitting on their hands in all
these departments. They know this is going on. They knew
it the day they convicted hopeful Christians.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
So what options does what options or what mechanisms would
the Prime Minister be able to utilize?

Speaker 3 (03:16):
Social Welfare has got the powers in the Act to
go in and remove families as a whole out of
this sort of harm. They've also got the Corporation's Investigations Act.
When you've got a criminal organization and this is clearly
now beyond doubt a criminal organization of sex offending, they

(03:36):
can step in and they can take over the assets,
and they can step in and straighten out what's going on.
You know, the police have done an incredible job finally
getting this man convicted, because all these victims are taught
don't go to the police. Your soul will be imperiled
if you do. On it goates it's a ma carb

(03:59):
controlled environment.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
So you're not talking you're not talking about shutting it down,
you're talking about the government taking over.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Yeah. Oh, look, there's some genuinely good Christian people in there,
but that the leadership are sex offenders. This man. We've
had a whole lot of young males prosecuted, convicted of
sex offending inside the community and The plea is, are
they know no better? Because this is how the community works.

(04:28):
It's the environment. Blah blah blah. This guy is one
of the men that created that environment. He's not a
product of it. He created it, and they are the
products of him and his leadership with other leaders.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Okay, what if the people living there didn't want the
government coming in and taking over.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Well, you're going to let them watch their little daughters
being molested every morning by the leader. No, it's criminals.
You can't let brainwash people have their daughters molested every
morning by the leadership.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, but yes, but brain but brain wash. If a
bran brainwashed people would still be opposed to the government
taking over, wouldn't they.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
They don't have the capacity to make that decision. Look,
come back instead when they're babies, and remember these are
all second their generation. There. When they're babies, they had
their breathing deliberately stopped to break their free will. When
they are months old, the organization deliberately puts them into

(05:35):
childcare centers, or this practice goes on and was going on.
It's shocking.

Speaker 2 (05:40):
So likely, how likely or how confident are you that
the government will intervene in the manner that you're calling for, Well,
they ain't.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
For fifty years, so why would I have any hope now?
That's why I'm speaking out saying, for God's sake, Prime Minister,
you're the only one who can step up now and
make government actually do its job. It's your job as
the Prime Minister.

Speaker 2 (06:03):
All right, Brian, appreciate your time. Thank you. Okay, So
what's your response to that? Has lawyer Brian Henry convinced
you that a government takeover of Gloria Vale needs to
happen and needs to happen asap. That's what he's calling
on the Prime Minister to do. I think it's a
brilliant idea because I think it's much more realistic than

(06:24):
just shutting the place down. But what do you think
should happen with Gloria Vale?

Speaker 1 (06:28):
