The Actors have joined the Writers in striking - and again AI is a key issue
160,000 performers stopped work at midnight - no more publicity tours, events, filming and more for the biggest names in Hollywood. People have been asking why Barbie has been going so big on their marketing so early, might just be because that will now grind to a halt.
At the center of the strike - Actors want more profit sharing in the global success of their shows and want to protect their craft from AI.
The Union's negotiator said studios had asked for the ability to scan the faces of background artists, pay them for a day's work, then be able to own and use their likeness "for the rest of eternity, in any project they want, with no consent and no compensation".
The Studios negotiator disagrees with the characterization and says the proposal only permits a company to use the digital replica of a background actor in the motion picture for which the background actor is employed. Any other use requires the background actor’s consent and bargaining for the use, subject to a minimum payment.
Either way - there is concern from the actors about how their work is valued, and how to protect their most important IP: their body!
