Wine: Durvillea 2023 Sauvignon Blanc $18

Why I chose it:
- Terrific wine, especially considering the difficult vintage (cyclone Gabriella)
- Entry level wine for Astrolabe. Entry level price but not entry level quality.
- You might remember the MV Rena grounded on the Astrolabe reef in 2021. By chance there were a couple of containers of Astrolabe wine on board. The wine and MV Rena were lost.

What does it taste like?
- One of the best examples of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from the 2023 vintage. Good intensity with restrained power and the perfect amount of punch without going overboard. Tantalising wine.

Why it’s a bargain:
- Well below average price for SB but well above average quality

Where can you buy it?
- Vino Fino and Wine Freedom in Christchurch both have it for $14.99

Food match?
- A versatile food match. I like it with Feta cheese. Most seafoods are a happy match.

Will it keep?
- Good for two years, perhaps more.

Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack Team podcast
from news Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
It is fourteen minutes to eleven on news talks 'B.
For his best buy this week, Master of Wine, Bob
Campbell has chosen a Davillia twenty twenty three Savin Blanc
for eighteen dollars. So why did you choose this, Bob?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Well, I think it's a terrific wine, especially considering the
sort of difficult vintage in twenty twenty three. Although this
is from Marlborough and Marlborough was significantly less affected than
Hawk's Bay, but it just came up trumps in twenty three.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
And this is an entry level wine for Astronae, right.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yes it is. Yeah, do of Vilee is their entry
level label. It astrolabs the sort of mothership if you like.
But it's certainly not entry level quality. That's that's the point.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, what does it taste like?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Well, it's I mean the French, it's got a marker
that you might find interesting. The French call it the
character box hedge. And if anyone's got a box hedge,
you know a lot of Orcan homeowners would have head
box hedges. Just go out and grab a couple of
leaves and rub them together with between your finger and thumb,

(01:28):
and and have a sniff, and you'll get a distinct
impression of the swine. That may not sound very tantalizing,
but it's an intense wine and it's got restrained power
and it's a perfect amount of punch without sort of

(01:48):
going overboard. I think it's a tantalizing wine.

Speaker 2 (01:51):
Oh, very good. You reckon that. It's pretty good value
at more eighteen dollars or even less because Sauvignon blanc
can be a bit more expensive than that. So we
can you pick it up, Bob?

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Well, you can get it below the recommended retail price
at Veno Fino and Wine Freedom and christ Church. They've
got it for sale for fourteen ninety nine, which is
a terrific price, and you can buy it online of
course that's the way to shop today these days.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
What would you match it with? What would you match
it with?

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Do you think it's quite a versatile food match? I
like it with feta cheese because it's got nice acidity
in the cheese and that matches facidity and the wine.
Most seafoods are a happy match with Devli Sauvignon nice.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
And will it keep Derek and Bob or is it
best drunken son.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, it's good for two years, perhaps more, but there's
probably not a lot of a lot of motive for
hanging on to it. It's not going to gain in quality,
but neither will it reduce in quality either.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Right, Oh that makes a lot of sense. Thanks Bob,
so Bob's beys buy for us this week at Devillia
twenty twenty three Sauvignon bloc for eighteen dollars or as
low as fourteen ninety nine. We'll put all the details
up at newstalkzeb dot co dot nz. Right now it
is ten to eleven.
