Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack Team podcast
from News Talks at be.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Aaron on the email this morning, Good morning Jack, heere,
I too felt sorry for the astronauts stranded up there
eight months as a hell of an extension, But just
think of the overtime pay and hey, not much to
spend your money on while they're up there. Yeah, that's
a good point. I did actually look it up. I
think this salary astronauts a salary, so I'm not sure
(00:34):
they necessarily get overtime, but they probably can reasonably expect
a few days off once they do hit Terra Firma
next year. The astronauts doing for food. No one pacts
enough food for eight months of going away for a week,
says Donna. I think the good news, Donnor, is that
the International Space Station does have plenty of reserves. There
are some other astronauts who are currently at the space station,
(00:55):
so they are kind of all in it together. But
as well as that, they flew up a special flight
to go and restock the space station, I think, rather
than food being a concern, because you know, they have
all their food and little packets and gels and that
kind of thing, the biggest concern was that they didn't
have any fresh clothes and so they were using these
kind of recycled clothes and that wasn't terribly dignifying, So
(01:20):
that was that was the initial concern. But for the
time being, they've got enough to get them through to
next February at the very least. The question is, though,
what will happen if that gets pushed back. Ninety two
and eighty two is the text number if you want
to get in touch. Kevin Millon is with us this morning. Kielder.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Kevin, I have funny Jack. You know, I've often thought
about you. You've achieved so much in your career or readio.
I've often thought to myself, what are the hell is
Jack going to do? And now you reveal this morning
that you look up the internet to find out how
much astronauts salary is.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
Are you not interested by that? I think it's fascinating.
So I think, yeah, they get they're they're in a
I mean, because of the US dollar versus the New
Zealand dollars quite strong right now. I think it's like
four hundred thousand New Zealand dollars, so it's a lot
of money. But I think like in US terms, it's
you know, like maybe two hundred and twenty or something,
which again is a lot of money, but a lot
(02:09):
of money to be spent like eight months away from
home in a weightless environment, eating only gels and dust,
don't you.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
Think, Yeah, yeah, where did you actually look up astronauts salary?
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Well, this is my favorite social media platform, is this
one called Reddit, where they have lots of you have
lots of different communities. So I follow the space community
and someone else had said how much do they get paid?
And then one of the keen space enthusiasts who's part
of that community put up a link so that you
can Because their federal employees in America, all of the
(02:45):
salaries are public, and because the astronauts, to be an astronaut,
you have to be a certain tier of employee, there's
a salary band, quite a refined salary band that all
the astronauts have to have to be paid. And the
thing is, of course that you can't like, I'm not
going to be going to space for NASA anytime soon
with my qualifications, as much as I enjoyed studying about
(03:06):
three PhDs short for the time being, So anyway, it'd
be very interesting. So yeah, just after ten o'clock New
Zealand time that the capsule, the Boeing caps are supposed
to start coming down, and it should land sometime this afternoon.
But if something goes wrong with that, it'll be really interesting.
Because Boeing insisted it was safe for the astronauts to
come back on it, and NASA overruled them and said,
(03:29):
you know what, let's not take the risk. We'll keep
them up there and we will send a SpaceX shuttle
up to get them in February of next year. So yeah,
keep your eyes on that when it comes down this afternoon.
But Kevin, you've had your attention elsewhere this week. You
want to see more protection against online scammers.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah, I see that. Consuming New Zealand, who I'm a
big fan of, is calling on New Zealands to help
them fund more protection against online scammers. They're looking for
fifty thousand dollars and four weeks. The donation campaign caught
my eye because this week, my own good self, Kevin Milne,
the consumer Champion, was nine nine on his way to
(04:08):
being ripped off when his wife said, sure, it's not
a scam. It was just enough to slop me pushing
send to one of the biggest online scams around at
the moment, the fake vehicle license for a newle reminder scam.
But by then I'd entered my credit card details, though
not fortunately the security code. I was trying to get
(04:29):
the security code into it, but it kept rejecting it,
and that's why I raised the matter with my wife.
Can you help me get the security card security code
in so to be on the safe side. Anyway, I
canceled the card and it appears nothing's been taken from
my account. I realized that something quite funny about the
old fair Go guy getting sacked in. I used to
(04:52):
know every scam going. I think I broke the first
ever story in New Zealand about Nigeria scams. What got
me with this one was the scammers that were using first
of all, the New Zealand Transport Agencies logos, and they
knew all the details of my car. A bit of
a worry in itself. Nonetheless, when you look back over
(05:12):
what you've done, you realize you've not been careful enough.
The email addresses email at VPS stroke I f AfDB
eight five four dot dot dot dot, which was never
going to be the correct email address for the New
Zealand fans Wood Agency, but I hadn't checked that anyway, Jack,
(05:32):
I've now sent a donation to Consume in New Zealand
and I urged listeners to do the same. I think
something like one hundred and thirty five million dollars has
been scammed from New Zealanders this year already. Wow, I
think that. I'm not certain about that. They're just in
the back of my mind. That's the figure. Yeah, wouldn't
it be awful if the Consuming New Zealand campaign this
(05:54):
is a terrible Really wouldn't it be awful if the
Consuming New Zealand campaign was also a scam?
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Oh that's about yeah, yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
No, I've checked that out. It's legit and I urged
listens to send it. Then the Consuming New Zealand just
go online to Consume in New Zealand. So then you're
onto their on their page and you'll see donate click
on that.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yes, yes, very wise do you know, Kevin, I mean
this not to come across as a slight in any way.
As soon as I heard about your experience and heard
that you wanted to recommend the Consumer New Zealand campaign
I immediately went onto the Consuming New Zealand website to
make sure that it was legit, because I thought, my goodness,
the only thing worse than Kevin being scammed as if
(06:39):
in telling his story we end up getting twenty thousand
people scammed the same way.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
Very please you have checked that for me, actually, because
I'm not a genius when it comes to that sort
of stuff. But I did check it out in myself,
and in the end this was no. I think if
you just go to Consumeing New Zealand page and then
you'll see donate, So no, it's legit.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
Yeah, And I think the best advice with these things
is never give across unsolicited information. So you know, a
solicitor and if you get an email saying, oh, give
us your details or anything like that, you're much better
to be skeptical and then go you independently go to
the actual source.
Speaker 3 (07:20):
You know.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
So, for example, you after you get that email saying, oh,
your license needs renewing or whatever, your registration needs renewing,
you can check the email address, but then you can
actually go to the NZTA website and see if your
registration needs to be renewed. And that's often a good
way to check things. Yeah, I'm glad that I'm glad
that it didn't accept your details at the very least, Kevin,
(07:43):
and very wise to check them with your wife on
that one. But yeah, you're not the only one, so
I hope you don't feel any degree of shame or anything, because,
as you say, so many New Zealanders are being scammed
at the moment, and these scams are getting increasingly sophisticated.
Ninety two ninety two is the text number.
