Another week, more AI advancements.

A crazy powerful AI is just months away

Reporting from The Verge says OpenAI will release a new model, codenamed "Orion", in December. The report says the launch strategy is different - instead of making it available in ChatGPT first, it's going to be given to their paying partners via APIs.

OpenAI's CEO says this is "fake news", but if the reporting is true, it's said to be potentially up to 100 times more powerful than the current GPT-4. They just closed a $6.6 billion funding round and are working to restructure themselves as a for-profit company. Maybe it'll be "ClosedAI"?

Adobe says artists need to get on the AI bandwagon

Their VP of Generative AI says they’re “not going to be successful in this new world without using it". It's all-in on the tech, and there won't be a product in its suite without it.

"We’ve always innovated with conviction, and we believe in the conviction of what we’re doing here". The company says the AI features, such as their Firefly tool that extends and generates bits of images for you, are some of the most adopted products Adobe has ever released. But will it kill art? There's a growing backlash to the tech in the creative community, but the VP goes on to say that "human creativity will be a critical part of it" and there "will be a thirst for artists who do things by hand".

Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack Tam podcast
from Newstalk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Twenty five to eleven Non News Talks 'DB. We were
staying at the start of the show this morning. It
takes a little bit of technical wizardry to be able
to broadcast live from New York around the world, and
this week we've managed our technical wizardry with none us
than our tech spurt. Paul Stenhouse is with us this
time every week. He is, of course based in New York,
He's been living there for years, so this morning I

(00:34):
had the great pleasure of going out for a cup
of coffee with him before he set us up for
our show.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Good morning, Paul, I know I saved the show with
a USB adapter.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Who would have thought, I mean, you are always saving
the day in some way, shape or form, But no,
it was wonderful to see you right before our show.
And for anyone who wants to see what Paul's backyard
looks like, I've put a photo up on our Facebook page,
So go and search out Jack Tame on Facebook or
go to Jacktam dot com and you will be able
to see Paul and I just minutes before the show.

(01:05):
Started this morning and catching up with one of the
most incredible views in the world. Anyway, another week, Paul
and more AI advancement. So we've got the new clawed
AI being released, but a crazy powerful AI is apparently
just months away.

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Yeah. So chat GPT, the company that started it all,
can you believe not even two years ago? Says, well,
there's some reporting that says that they are going to
be releasing a new model, which is apparently code named O'Ryan,
in December, so that'll be about two years since this
thing launched. It's going to be Chat GPT maybe five.

(01:42):
We're currently at Chat GPT four.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Jack.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
This is big though, because if this reporting is true,
they say it's going to be one hundred times more
powerful than the current GPT four. One hundred times more powerful?
Can I say that again? That is crazy. They're going
to launch it a little bit differently though, previously than
when they've had a new model, as they call them,

(02:07):
come out, they put them straight into the latest Chat
GPT software. They're going to do a little bit differently
in the sense that they're going to give it to
their pain partners using their APIs first. So these are
the folks who are building honestly whole businesses on top
of chat GPT's business. It's big. It needs to work
because they just closed a wait for it, six point

(02:30):
six billion dollar funding round and they're working to restructure
themselves now as a for profit company. They currently are
not for profit. So maybe instead of open AI, do
we think it'll be closed AI.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
It's so interesting, So I mean, in real terms, what
does one hundred times more powerful than chat GBT four
actually mean? Like, if I'm going onto chatgbt dot com
or using the app, how different does it look to me?

Speaker 3 (03:00):
I think faster, it's probably going to know more, it's
going to probably sound a little smarter. I mean when
you think about what these AI tools can do, right,
they scan text and they know information from that text.
So you think, if it's going to be one hundred
times more powerful, if it can scan all of the

(03:20):
laws of the land, all of the past cases, it's
going to be a significantly smarter quote unquote lawyer and
give maybe better legal advice or defenses or whatever you
want to use it for. Think of the same thing
about software engineers. If it can go and it can
scan code bases of current applications, it's going to know

(03:41):
so much more about those code bases, and it's going
to get to do more. It's going to do it faster,
and it's going to just look here and seem smarter.

Speaker 2 (03:50):
I mean, it's already remarkable what it can do in
terms of coding, right Like, it's just just just crazy
what AI is able to achieve just now in the
latest clawed model is doing just that. Meanwhile, Adobe says
that artists actually need to get on board the AI bandwagon.
I thought AI why an artistry did not go hand
in hand?

Speaker 3 (04:10):
No, they don't. Really. There's quite a backlash actually to
that tech in the whole creative community of all sorts
of artists, whether they be painters or whether they be
video editors. But this VP who looks after all of
the generative AI at Adobe says, these artists, Jack, they
are not going to be successful in this new world
without using it. It basically says, get on board or

(04:34):
you're going to get left in the dust. But here's
something that's interesting. He did go on to say that
human creativity will still be a critical part and that
there will be a thirst for artists who do things
by hand. So maybe it's more that you should do
the AI for things just for fun and maybe there

(04:56):
or for work, and then maybe do something that's may
be a little more artistic, for something that's a little
more meaningful to you.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
Yeah, that's a interesting it's going to be so disruptive.
Thank you so much, Paul. We appreciate your time. Paul
Standhouse is our texpert and my coffee date this afternoon
in Manhattan.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
