Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack team podcast
from News Talks at me.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
Step. This is Nadia Reid. That song is called Hotel
Santa Cruz. She's our feature interview after ten this morning.
It's what five years I think since she released her
last album. So since then you had COVID blah blah blah,
you've had well, she's had two children, and she's moved

(00:50):
from Port Chalmers to Manchester, of all places, so she's
moved right across the world. She's gonna be with us
after ten this morning. Tell us about the move, why
did she decide to upsticks, And we'll have a bit
of a listen to her new music as well, So
looking forward to that right now, though, time to catch
up with our film review of Francesca Rudkin is year
with us morning.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
No, good morning, Oh I laughed, not yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
Yeah, she's great, She's really amazing. She's yeah, yeah, that'll
be there'll be really something. So yeah, looking forward to that. Hey,
I have been excited about your films this morning. I've
been a bit cheeky about Nicole Kidman, but I feel like, well, no,
just I feel like this is Cole Kidman sort of
having a bit of a moment at the moment, Hey, I.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
Do do you feel like it so good in this film?
Is she?

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Okay?

Speaker 3 (01:34):
It's really good in this film, and I feel like
she's been snubbed at it by the Oscars. Should we
haven't listen to trailer?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Let's have a listen. Okay. So this is Nicole Kidman,
Antonio Bandettison, Harrison Dickinson in Baby Girl.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
Okay, Hey, we need to have a conversation. You're very young.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I don't want are you? I think I have power
over you because I could make one.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Call and you everything. Does that turn you on?

Speaker 3 (02:00):
When it's game?

Speaker 1 (02:05):
Dan?

Speaker 2 (02:06):
Okay? Tell us about Baby Girl?

Speaker 3 (02:09):
Yeah. So this is a very sort of sexy, erotic thriller.
It's a very complex, challenging and most likely polarizing film.
I really loved it. It's directed by Helena Raim and
it starts Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson and Antonio Banderaz and
Nicole Cadman. She plays a ceo Rommy and for all appearances,

(02:29):
she has it all. She has an amazing job, she's
a female leader in business. She has a beautiful home
to gorgeous children. It's successful theater director, her husband, but
she's really at the sort of point in her life
where she's prepared to blow it all up, just destroy everything,
to kind of find herself and sort of start fresh.
And the catalyst of the young intern Samuel played by

(02:50):
Harry Dickinson. He is quite a unique character. Actually, he
challenges her. It's sort of an inappropriate manner in the workplace.
He's quite bold, but he's also young and kind of
lacks a sophistication to him as well. And he's a
hard character down one minute, he's kind of charming. He
can be cruel, they can be sexy, angry, and then

(03:11):
really sweet and quite immature. And that's because he kind
of represents a fantasy for Rommy. She's able to delve
into kind of and explore some of her darkest or
sexual needs. There's been a lot of reaction to this
film for the reason I just mentioned, from a woman

(03:31):
wanting to explore her darkest sexual needs, to a female
leader abusing her power over an employer e to the
way that Rommy deals with her marriage. But it's fabulous
in the way it's so confrontational. You can't leave this
film without going Okay, that was really full on. There
was a lot going on here. Let's start unraveling there

(03:53):
and potentially having some really interesting conversations with your girlfriends.
Nicole CapMan is absolutely fantastic in this film. Look, I
think it's fair to say, and people will know where
I'm coming from when I say this, but often when
we see her in TV shows and things now, she's
what I call lit out, like she's lit in such
a way that she just you don't see her age.

(04:15):
She always looks amazing in a maclate and she does
in this film as well, but I think she's been
shot a little bit more naturally. You see the crow's
feet on her face, you see the lines on her face,
you see her as a middle aged woman, yeah, addressing
kind of her sexual needs. And I think that's really
important for you to relate to her. You love it

(04:36):
and you'll hate it. Like her behavior and her actions,
you kin'd of understand them, but you won't like them all.
But I just felt like she's really put herself out there.
This is a very brave role. Okay, she sort of
did it with eyes wide many years ago, but she
had a husband by her side when she shot that film.
In this particular film. Obviously she's older. You know. It's

(04:56):
a film about a middle aged woman exploring her sexuality,
and she really puts it all out there.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Oh it sounds great, sexy, ironical Saturday morning. So I
love it here and I'm here for it. I'm here
for it. Okay. So that is Baby Girl that's showing
in cinemas now, and like you say, lots of buzz
around that one. Let's have listen to our second film,
something completely different. This is You're Cordially Invited. I'm checking

(05:28):
into the bridal suite. My sister is getting married this week.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
I think there might be a little mistake because my
daughter is getting married.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Oh no, we've double booked your weddings.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
What Oh, I'm calm, I'm super col.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
Ah. That old classic situation a recent screen and wilfare
all of the familiar voices you probably recognized the tell
us about You're Cordially Invited.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Well, this is directed by Nicholas Stola, and really the
trailer sunds it up beautifully. This is a fun romantic comedy.
They kind of misses as much as it hits. It's
very much reliant on its two likable leads. Will Farell
is a solo dad. His wife died years ago and
he's raised his daughter. They're very close. She comes home

(06:13):
from college and says, Dad, I'm getting married, and he goes, ah, okay,
and he's shocked by the whole thing. But besides, he's
going to give his daughter the wedding of her dreams.
At the same time, Reethe with a Spoon plays Margo
and she wants to give her sister her wedding of
her dreams. And they book the same venue and they
turn up and it's on a little island and there's

(06:34):
not a lot of other options, so they decided to
share the venue, and chaos kind of ensues. Some of
it is really funny, some of it just misses being funny,
and it's a bit odd or a bit crass, But
all in all, this is meant to just be a
pleasant crowd pleaser, and it kind of ticks that box.
Although I spent most of my time admiring Reef's Witherspoon's

(06:56):
hair and wondering whether I should get bangs. So that
tells you how gripping tells you how mostly gripping this
film is jack not so much at all, But you're
actually just you know, take taking in the haircuts and
the clothes. But look, if you after some like height
a silly fun this is screaming on Prime.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Yeah is it? Like you know how like Will Ferrell
movies almost have their own kind of they're almost like
a genre unto themselves.

Speaker 3 (07:20):
Yeah, and that's the thing. It kind of goes halfway there, Jack, Yeah,
fully there. And so when they do kind of go
along that irreverent, kind of slightly haughty, kooky Will Ferrell
kind of approach, it sort of jars a little bit. Yeah,
it's a bit of a mix. It's it's and that's
why it didn't quite work for me. But I think

(07:41):
the two leads are great together, be great together. They
drive the whole thing. It's fun, it's light and you
know you might getting your haircut out of it.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, okay, well okay, I do love Will Ferrel. So yeah,
thank you. So that's your cordially invited. Francesca's first film
is Baby Girl, and all of the details for those
movies are gonna be up at news storks hear b
dot co dot nz Ford slash Jack. That is, of
course the best place to go for everything from our

(08:09):
show Baby Girl is showing in cinemas, and the one
with Will Ferrell and Reese Withersman, You're Cordially Invited is
showing on Prime Video.
