Apple's big developer conference is on Monday US time – what can we expect to be announced?

1. A more unified user experience across all the platforms.

MacOS, iOS, iPadOS, WatchOS and even CarPlay will all be getting updates to bring everything into the same design scheme based on VisionOS – the software that runs the Vision Pro headset. It's all based around 'digital glass', so expect to see reflections, blurs, light, etc.

2. App redesigns for the Phone, Messages and Camera apps.

The phone will get a timeline type view, which combines favourite contacts, recent calls, and voicemails into a single scrollable window. The Camera has had so many features added to it that it's got a bit cluttered and confusing, so expect this to be simplified and reworked. Messages will get customizable backgrounds (like WhatsApp) and the ability to create polls. Safari will update too, to match the new glassy design.

3. Multi-tasking on iPad is coming closer to the Mac

Another step closer to one operating system to rule them all. It's expected that this new multi-tasking feature will be unlocked when using a keyboard and mouse, suggesting the iPad might get a more 'desktop-like' mode.

4. PDF editing is coming to the iPhone and iPad to sign documents, annotate, and edit.

WhatsApp is now on iPad

It has an iMessage-like two-column layout with a list of conversations on the left and the messages on the right. It supports multi-tasking and can do video calls with up to 32 people. WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly active users!

You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack Tame podcast
from News Talks at.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
B Apple has its big developer conference and a couple
of days time, several big announcements are rumored to be
on the way, and our Textburt Paul Stenhouse is all
over it, of course, So Paul, what can we expect? Yes?

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I think the big one, Jack, is that everything's going
to look a bit different, and for the first time,
probably the most unified kind of look across all of
the platforms, from your Mac to your iPhone, to your iPad,
to your watch and even Apple Car Play. Apparently it's
all going to be getting the same sort of design
scheme that Vision OS has. And you're going, what is

(00:48):
a vision that is that's the thing the software that
runs on the Vision pro Yeah, which is the headset
the Yes next generation computer. Isn't it funny you just
took the words out of my mouth. They said, we're
going to make everything look like the thing that no
one uses. But it's all apparently going to be based
around digital glass. So I'm expecting some blurs, some reflections.

(01:10):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (01:11):
So what digital glass?

Speaker 1 (01:12):
What does that mean?

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Does it just I think it's.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Going to look like there'll be different panes of glass
and all the aesthetic will be how you know, different
pains overlap with each other. Is kind of what I'm expecting.
But that's all hopefully announced Monday. But of course this
is all to come, right, This is all going to
be announced and then we'll be rolled out in the
next few months. But some app redesigns coming to your

(01:36):
phone as well, the actual phone app, because your iPhone
is actually your phone, remember the phone app, the messages app,
and the camera app. Some of the core apps of
your iPhone will get a new look. Is the rumor.
The phone will get sort of what sounds like a
timeline type view with your favorite contacts, your recent calls,
and your voicemails all in one kind of scrollable thing

(01:57):
so you don't have to run between those. A more
simplified camera because there's so many things going on in
the camera, yeah, so many features. It's got a bit cluttered.
So I think they're going to kind of simplify and
rework some of that. And messages will get my message
that is will get a customizable background, sort of like WhatsApp,
the kind of going head to hit now with WhatsApp,

(02:18):
and you'll also apparently have the ability to create poles
so far you'll get that new glassy look too. So
lots of change coming in the next version we're expecting.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
I mean, they presumably they test all of the stuff
heaps before they roll it out, right, So there's nothing
that is going to be too alarming or too confusing
for people.

Speaker 3 (02:36):
I'm sure my mum will still have questions, Wow, your
words not mine, Paul, your words not mine.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
But yeah, I mean, okay, I mean some of those
some of those things seem to kind of, you know,
make a lot of sense. It'll be interesting to see
whether or not this is going to drive people towards
that vision. OS like they're kind of pushing ahead with
that product still, right.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
Oh yeah they are. Here's the bit that caught my
eye though, Jack, is I actually think and you've talked
about you and I've talked about this before, is you know,
the one operating system to rule them all? Yeah, you know,
and I think that. So one of the other rumors
is that multitasking on the iPad is actually going to
get reworked, and it sounds like it's going to become
a lot more desktop like so, and it may even

(03:18):
only be unlocked when you actually attach a keyboard and
a mouse or use your magic keyboard that you can
buy it from Apple. So I wonder if we're getting
one step closer. I know, we're like inching inching. Yeah,
you know, but it feels like if you if you
can go on your iPad and you can plug in
your keyboard in your mouse or connect it with Bluetooth,
and you can move a pointer and drag windows around it,

(03:40):
and it feels like a desktop. Yeah, it probably doesn't
matter what's happening behind the scenes. I think that means
that people may start using the iPad a little more
like a desktop.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Yeah right, okay, So I've just talked about the Vision
Pro to see what it costs stars three and a
half grand. Yeah yeah, I mean it's not this doesn't
design it. This isn't named at me, is it. I mean, no,
it's not you know.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
I remember, you know Andy and Anderson on Seeing in
New Year's Ere. Yeah yeah, Anderson Cooper made some really
like flippant remark. He's say, yeah, I watched done too
on my Apple Vision Pro, and Andy Cohen just looked
at him like, who are you and why yeah, which
I think is my kind of take. I'm like, who's
doing this?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
Yeah, yeah, I think, yeah, we're not the only one.
D Thanks Paul. Look forward to that so that, I
think the big developers conferences in a couple of days time,
all that detail is going to be confirmed, and I
suppose we'll wait a few more days after that until
those of us who use iPhones and Apple products will
have to download new software and see how it all looks.
