Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Saturday Morning with Jack team podcast
from News Talks at B.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Night.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Your weekend off the right way. Saturday Morning with Jackdaine,
News Talks at.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
B Good morning, Welcome to News talk Ed V. Jack
(00:45):
tam with you three to midday Today. I had my
first proper summary day of the summer. By that, I
don't mean that the that the weather was summary, orthough
obviously it's very summary. No, what I mean is that
I went to the beach, I had an ocean swim,
I came home and had a barbecue. So like the
ultimate kind of Kiwi summary day, everything was perfect. Everything
was amazing. The water was surprisingly warm. I took the
(01:10):
ten months old and we sat in the shallows as
the waves kind of rolled over him, and it was great.
This time I didn't manage to splash him in the
face like it the first time I took him to
the beach, so his mum was very pleased as well,
and it was superb. I did a butterfly leg lamb
on the barbecue as well, slightly overcooked. It would be
my only complaint on that. And good news for me
(01:31):
is that before ten o'clock this morning, our cook is
in with her top tips on absolutely nailing a slow
cooked butterfly lamb leg this summer. It's one of those
amazing cuts that, when done well, is absolutely delicious and
I feel like it's more impressive that than it actually looks,
you know what I mean, Like the amount of effort
(01:53):
that goes into it versus the end result is. You know,
everyone's really impressed when you nail it, unlike me, but
it really doesn't require you to be Nigella, you know.
So before ten o'clock we've got that recip for you
as well as that I'm going to tell you about
a new movie with George Clooney and Adam Sandler. And
then after ten cannot wait for this our feature interview
(02:16):
this morning is the star of Jonathan Creek, the star
of Qi. Alan Davis is headed to New Zealand. He's
doing his first stand up to it in Yonks. He's
one of those brilliant British wits, so really looking forward
to chatting with him after ten o'clock this morning. Right now,
it is nine minutes past nine.
Speaker 5 (02:36):
Jack Team.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
It's funny how becoming a parent instantly makes you care
more about stuff. There's a hot take if every there
was one, right, But it's funny as a like as
a kid. As a child, I used to find it
super embarrassing when my dad would yell out at cars
that were driving too fast. So, you know, we'd be
(03:01):
standing on the side of the street or walking to
school or something and someone would speed past and Dad
would call out to them, and I would think, oh,
my goodness, shame. But now I'm that guy. Right, every
time a car hoons up our street, I want to
scream at the driver, and sometimes I do. There are
kids here, you tosser. My values in education have very
(03:24):
much sharpened since becoming a parent. My views on kids
and smartphones have only intensified. And as Australia's world leading
ban on social media for under sixteens comes into effect,
I am fascinated to see what's going to happen. For
the record, I really really dislike social media. I think
(03:48):
what was initially sold to the world as a way
for people to connect has morphed into something far more
cynical and sinister. Honestly, the likes of Facebook know that
they maximize their profits by keeping people scrolling, and while
once upon a time when you were on Facebook or Instagram,
(04:09):
you would mainly just be seeing pictures of your mates.
The various platforms have all worked out that nothing keeps
people scrolling for longer than making them really, really angry.
For all of the relatively harmless accounts and cat videos
or people making creative and funny content, the net effect,
I think has been poisonous. The platforms that were meant
(04:32):
to connect us have done the opposite. They have isolated us,
They've divided us. I said last year on the show
that social media platforms should be subject to better regulation,
not to mention better or proper taxation, and at the
very least we should be considering something like Australia's social
(04:54):
media stance. But for those of us who nerd out
on public policy, the actual design of the Australian legislation
I think has underscored why this is such a trick,
key issue to legislate and regulate. And it comes down,
I think, to the definition what is social media? Even
(05:18):
though they can try and work to a common set
of standards, ultimately someone needs to make a judgment call right.
That's how the Australian law works. They've got a list
of ten platforms that are subject to the ban. So
while Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok have been banned, Discord doesn't
yet face the same restrictions. There are thousands of different
(05:41):
platforms nay hundreds of thousands, millions maybe on the Internet
where young people can still post and interact. YouTube has
argued that it isn't social media at all. You can
still access many videos without an account and read It
is taking legal action arguing that its platform is totally
different than many of the others. All of us appreciate
(06:04):
that teenagers are in right. You can try and play
whack a mole and ban every new platform that pops up,
but obviously some of them are going to find ways
around the law, just as anyone who got their hands
on alcohol or cigarettes before their eighteenth birthday will attest.
But supporters of the law say, actually, that is a
(06:24):
pretty good analogy. No one is suggesting that the ban
is going to stop every last kid from accessing social media,
but it generally makes it more difficult with the most
popular platforms. Truthfully, I don't know how effective this law
(06:45):
is going to be. I don't know. I understand the
impulse to want to protect children. I was a big
supporter of banning phones and schools. I think that unregulated
social media has been disastrous, but this is super, super complex.
I think the sensible thing for New Zealand to do
is to wait, not forever, but just take six months,
(07:11):
take a year, learn from the Australians, observe closely the
unintended impacts of the law, what works well and what doesn't,
and then make a call. And even if we do
act in the future, just as with booze or with cigarettes, truthfully,
the state can only do so much. And look, it's
(07:33):
easy to say this now, perhaps come back to me
in five or ten years or when my kids are
a bit older, But the primary responsibility for keeping kids
safe in the digital age cannot fall to governments or legislators.
The responsibility is with us parents. Jack Team ninety two.
(07:54):
Ninety two is the text number if you want to
send me a message this morning. Don't forget the standard
text costs supply you can email me as well. If
you like Jacket, Newstalk, zb dot co, do on his head,
hit me up on Facebook, go on TikTok, Instagram. No, no, no,
I'm just kidding. We're gonna catch up with our sparto
very shortly. It's a shame really that well, it's great
that the black Cats won, but I would have loved
(08:15):
to see the second test, the last test of the
New Zealand summer stretch beyond three days. But big As chooses.
I suppose we'll get his thoughts on that very soon.
Kevin Melons here to kick us off for our Saturday
Morning together next. Right now, it is quarter past nine,
it is Saturday morning. I'm Jack Tame and this is
News Talks.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
He'd be no better way to kick off your weekend.
Then quit with Jack. Saturday Morning with Jack.
Speaker 5 (08:38):
Team News Talk said, be.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Thank you for your messages. Ben says, Jack, leave free
speech alone. If my son wants to use Facebook, he can.
It's called being a parent keeping an eye on your kids. Jack.
What social media does is replace connection with communication. People
forget that what people really want is connection, and you
don't get that on social media. And Jack. While I'm
thrilled with the Aussies and the stance that they're taking
(09:04):
on social media, I worry their focus fall short of
platforms such as four Chan and discord. The issue is
that parents are sometimes unaware of what their kids are
doing online and when they're unsupervised with gaming apps like roadblocks,
file sharing and communication platforms like Discord. That is where
the real dangers lie, with things like coercion and violent manipulation.
(09:26):
You are one hundred percent correct, though, says Ray. Parents
have a major role to play here. Ninety two. Ninety
two is the text number. If you want to see
me a message, you can email me as well. You
know the deal. Eighteen past nine and Kevin Milne is
with us this morning for the penultimate time in twenty
twenty five. Kyoto, Kevin, Good.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Morning, Kyoda Jack.
Speaker 6 (09:45):
Did you see Ja Cinder on Graham Lawton last night?
Speaker 4 (09:48):
I did? Yeah, yeah. What did you think of her?
Of her performance? It's very good in those sorts of things.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
I thought it's just really good.
Speaker 6 (09:55):
Actually, But did you leave the whole world thinking that
most New Zealanders can ride a horse bare back?
Speaker 7 (10:02):
I did that?
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Yeah, yeah, hopefully not everyone's expecting that of us. Well,
I don't know about you, Kevin. I'm not sure what
you've been up to in your spare time. Maybe that's
one of the many talents that you can test having.
Speaker 6 (10:15):
Yes, yes, yes, she was saying, wasn't she She applied
for a job when she was young as a as
a hobbit.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Yes.
Speaker 6 (10:23):
And they asked her two questions, can you ride bareback?
And she said, well, yes, I mean your zealand I
was thinking what no. And then the other question was
could you joust?
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Yes?
Speaker 6 (10:36):
I thought it was an extraordinary question.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Really, Oh, yes, yes, yes I joust.
Speaker 6 (10:41):
If you askedternoon on Saturday, Yeah, ridiculous.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
You know, every time I watch it, though, every time
I watched Graham Norton, and obviously, you know, just Doing
is a very strong communicator, regardless of what one thinks
of her politics, and she's a very very strong communicator.
Whenever I watched Graham Norton, I'm just an ore of
him as a broadcaster. I think he is an incredible
broadcaster because his amazing talent is that when he has
(11:08):
people who are really good communicators and really good speakers,
he lets them run the show. He gives them all
the space in the world. But the moment that someone
is a little bit hesitant or a little bit nervous,
or isn't quite as strong, he leaps in there and
is able to make jokes and kind of weave together
different people's stories and experiences. I just think he's I
think he's like a truly unique generational talent.
Speaker 6 (11:32):
Yeah, anyway, I was thinking, I was thinking to myself
last night, actually, how would I cope with being in
that group? I mean that had some very very strong people,
and it'd be quite nerve wracking, wouldn't it. Wondering in there?
Speaker 4 (11:48):
I think I suspect that they're they're very well produced,
so they all know roughly what they're going to say,
and they all know they kind of they have a
couple of anecdotes prepared and that sort of thing. You know,
There's there's a little bit of spontaneity in there, but
I suspect that there's quite there's a lot of organization
that goes into making it look so casual and relax
on TV. Yeah, anyway, you want to talk today about
(12:10):
Christmas messages, Kevin.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
Yeah, I want to thank you for your Christmas card
earlier in the week. I particularly like getting it for
three reasons. One because it's the only Christmas card we've
got this year. Not even any real estate agent to
collector has sent us one no.
Speaker 8 (12:31):
Two.
Speaker 6 (12:31):
Second reason, we got the card on Tuesday, so I
went out that you must have sent it to a
three days earlier. That would have been when you're in
the thick of preparing for an astonishingly demanding, research intensive,
even physically taxing, one hour interview with police former police
(12:52):
Commissioner Andrew Costa. That interview broke a lot of new
ground and led to headlines all over the country and
somewhere around all that you took the time to send
Linda and I a Christmas card. How chuffed we and
by the way, congratulations on an interview of the highest quality.
The third reason I like getting a Christmas card. It
(13:16):
was handwritten, specifically written for us, and didn't have the
slightest whiff of AI about it. I rail at the
thought of using AI to send someone a personal message.
I'm not against AI, I use all the time when
writing columns to find precisely the right word that I need,
(13:37):
for example, But the thought of allowing AI to convey
a Christmas west to a friend for me, I find
it awful fake friendship. I was recently sent an E
card inviting me to add my Birthday message to a friend.
AI offered to help me make my message more original,
(13:59):
or even having them write the entire message for me.
Speaker 8 (14:03):
You are joking?
Speaker 6 (14:04):
Are you urged listeners ever to take AI up on
such an offer. A simple message from you is always
going to be far better than a limp line or
two from AI, which is one of the reasons Lindra
and I so much appreciated your handwritten Christmas card Jack.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
I think that the most generous thing about your comment
this morning, Kevin is that you have neglected to mention
my handwriting. I'm a place you could even tell it
was from me. I just I have appalling handwriting. That
the handwriting of a sort of a child who's I
don't know, but yeah, you know, it's just sort of
sliding off the page. It's barely legible to me. I
(14:45):
don't understand how anyone can read it.
Speaker 9 (14:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (14:48):
What interested that is that you still print rather than
naturally use cursive writing? Yeah, yeah, exactly is that because
your cursor writing is totally illegible.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
It's totally illegible, totally eligible. I can be writing notes
on a notepad of work and then go and look
at them half an hour later, and I think, oh,
that could be, that could be about seven different words.
That one could be. You know, it's it's it's terribly tricky.
But yeah, yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:15):
Well, we didn't care what the writing was, what style
of writing you adopted. It was getting the card and
your your warm wishes. We thought it was just great.
And when I when I thought of that, the wheat
you've had, I mean phenomenal, that one hour interview terrific
(15:36):
and to have somehow another in that time thought of
us and got.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
A card away to us, just.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
Very very flattering.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
No, no, no, I'm grateful you received it, and grateful
for everything you do for us on Saturday mornings, Kevin,
and have done for so many years. So I'm pleased
to hear it. And when it comes to AI, you know,
I think we all agree with you. There should be
a There should be a ban on AI Christmas messages
and AI best man speeches. It's my other one. I
(16:07):
think like there's the moment you go to one of
the chat GPTs or GEM and I or anything and
you say, I'm the best man and I need to
make a heartfelt switch for my friend. It should immediately
say Ping Mingming, do not sorry that that is beyond
the realms of what we can help you with.
Speaker 6 (16:23):
That just ye moment and then and then contact the
groom exactly you you're.
Speaker 4 (16:31):
Getting exactly, yeah, exactly. Oh dear all right, Kevin, Hey,
thanks so much. Have a great weekend, and I'm really
pleased the car got there in the en. Thank you
for your feedback, Kelly, says Jack. The under sixteen social
media band could be achieved by only letting under sixteen's
have phones that can simply make calls and allow texts.
A phone still exists, so so basically non smartphones are
(16:54):
dumb phone from under sixteens. That way, social media would
potentially only be accessed at home on other devices, potentially
under parental supervision. Thank you for that. We'll catch up
with our sporto in a couple of minutes and before
ten o'clock. On news talks, he'd be that beautiful slow
cook butterfly LAMB League recipe for you, twenty six past.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Nine getting your weekends started. It's Saturday morning with Jack team.
On news talks, he'd.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
Be twenty nine past nine on news Talks, he'd be
massive win for Hayden Wild, especially given the season he
has had. In the World Triathlon Champs this morning, so
he has won the World T one hundred title and
as long as getting as well as getting the title
he gets a three hundred and fifty thousand dollars bonus,
which is fantastic in this sport of triathlon, our sporto.
(17:42):
Andrew Saville is here this morning, and given that accident
that Hayden Wild suffered just just what six months ago,
it was about six months ago, it was in May year. Yeah,
it is just incredible the strength with which he has
come back.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
Let's not forget jack morning to you. He rode his
bike into the back of a garbage truck in Japan.
I think it was he broke four ribs of shoulder
blades for lung damage. Then he is back in triathlon
less than three months later, an incredible comeback, and then
he just has kept winning everything pretty much. He won
in London, France, Spain, Woollongong, and then this the World
(18:22):
Championship final race this morning in the Middle East. He
missed out and do buy a few weeks ago. I
think you remember that where they messed up they messed
up the number of laps year he'd run nor biked,
and he probably would have won that as well. Quite
a lucrative series. It's quite a new series. Twenty five thousand.
(18:43):
I think us per win and then two hundred k
as you mentioned us for winning the title, so he's
done well this year, totally, totally, thoroughly deserved too. The
t one hundred of In case you're not aware, it's
a two k swim, right, most of us wouldn't even
be able to do that, right Ye. An eighty k
bike ride in an eighteen k run, and these guys
(19:05):
and women do it at an amazing clip too. They
are sprinting the whole way in the run, They're riding
full out on the bike and then swimming fast too,
So that's one hundred k overall. It's pretty much like
a half iron Man. And Wild made a point after
Paris that he would do longer series and longer races
before la in the Olympics in twenty twenty eight. I
(19:28):
don't know if you've ever met Haye and Wild, but
I actually thought I've only ever seen him on screen.
I thought he was a big cookie. Then I met
him after Paris.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
No, no, no, and he's tiny.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Yeah, yeah, he's tiny. I could almost see through him.
Speaker 10 (19:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:41):
I think it's a power to wait component that makes
you got to try.
Speaker 8 (19:45):
It for.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
I felt ashamed what he puts his body through. Jack,
and there's not many weeks break between these T one
hundred races. What he puts his body through every third
or fourth weekend and training obviously as well, it's just
it's just incredible. He would have to be arguably the
world's best try athlete at the moment across the Olympic distance,
(20:09):
across half iron Man or T one hundred and even
iron Man distance, he would have to be right up
there and on the globe. So well done to Hayden
Wild and again considering what he's come back from, it's
been it's been quite the incredible year.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
The black CAFs one and up three days for the
second Test.
Speaker 2 (20:29):
Everyone on Wellington was looking forward to a nice, nice
Saturday Sunday on the on the grass banks of the
beautiful Basin Gone. I think the black Caps bowlers did
fantastically well considering they've had so many injuries. And then
Bleared Ticner goes and blows his shoulder fielding the other day.
(20:50):
Such a shame because he was he was starting to
get into his rhythm. I really like watching Jack Jacob Duffy.
He he is an unlikely looking international cricketer. He not
an unlikely fast bowler. With his build, but he he's
a Southlander. He looks like he's just wandered off the farm.
(21:10):
But he's clearly strong. He bowls at a decent clip
and he took five wickets in the West Indies second innings.
He took a five in the first Test. So while
under Jacob Duffy, he's now after just a few Test
matches the senior member. Yeah, pretty much of this bowling attack.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Yeah, and chasing the Fox last night. It's so good
to see Michael Campbell out there.
Speaker 2 (21:30):
Ah, that was fantastic ye and his shot I think
it was on the last hole he in the past
three He almost got a hole on one, as did
Eric Murray, our old mate. Yeah, he almost sunk it
with a huge audience watching on TV and a big
audience at Royal Auckland. That's that's that's that's nerve wracking
(21:52):
stuff for a lot of these non pro golfers. But
Eric Murray did very well. Yeah, great to see Michael
Campbell back in the country. Never loses his touch. And
I thought Ryan Fox and Daniel Hillier, who've had great years,
they played well as well. Look not you know, not
everybody's cover of tea and I'm sure. I'm sure some
older golfers might look down the It's like the Black Clash.
(22:16):
I love I love watching the Black Clash and this
is a similar vein a great, a great evening raising
money for charity. And it's great to have Ryan Fox
and his mates back in town, that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (22:28):
David Nika is in the ring in Queensland tonight.
Speaker 5 (22:31):
Right.
Speaker 2 (22:33):
Yeah, he had another step towards us come back to
getting back into world title contention. He lost in January
against this Aussie superstar Jai Opataire who's become one of
the best boxes in the world. So certainly not disgrace
and winning and losing to to offer tire, but he's
he's fighting in his adopted hometown, Jack. This is amazing
(22:54):
now wester of Brisbane, little country town called Gatton. I
think the population's four thousand. I spoke to him yesterday.
He said he'll know every face in the crowd. Uh
later tonight. It's on It's on Tea he too actually
and on TVNZ Plus if you want to tune in
and watch them boxing for free. David Niek is such
a likable bloke and in the background or the forefront
(23:16):
of his mind, as well as that his fiance was
diagnosed about a month ago with head and neck cancer.
So they're going through some real battles at the moment.
But she wanted him, LEKSI wanted him to continue with
this fight and then they carry on their own fight
after tonight in the Queensland town of Gatton. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:35):
No, good luck to them. Thanks, sav have a great weekend.
Catch again very soon, Andrew savil Our Sporto this morning.
Thank you for your messages.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Jack.
Speaker 4 (23:42):
A good start when it comes to the social media
regulation would be to abolish anonymous posting, get rid of
keyboard warriors, says Scott. I mean, I love that idea
in theory, Scott. I think it's going to be extremely
difficult to enforce, but I absolutely love that idea in theory.
And there are some people who think that you should
have this kind of regardless of what country you're in,
you should have a kind of a universal Internet ID
(24:05):
so that you can always be identified on the Internet.
I mean, I think some of the some of the
purists on the Internet would say that that kind of
flies in the face with the founding principles of the
entire thing. But that's an interesting idea. Nevertheless, ninety two
ninety two. If you want to send us a message
like Scott did, that's our text number this morning. I
have more of your feedback very shortly. Next up, your

has a small role in the film as, well But
George clooney stars and he is pretty much playing.
Speaker 7 (26:29):
Himself he's AN a list.
Speaker 12 (26:31):
Star he's had a remarkable, career and in this film
he takes a moment to reflect on that career and
his life and the fact that you know what it
took to make, it but then just not even make
it stay there as, well and what he realizes is that,
yes that's been a huge success and he's done very,
(26:53):
well but he's kind of lost everything else in his
life along the. Way he has sort of nothing solid
left in his personal. Life he's quite a hollowed out.
Man and he he's got a couple of daughters who
are now sort of. Adults one is about to head
off to. College and that's what kind of the empty
(27:13):
nest is what kind of instigates this self. Reflection he
always thought he wanted to be a good. Parent he
thought he could postpone his parenting a bit, though because
he was always away on, films making films and. Things
and when it comes round to him, GOING i really
want to reconnect with my two. Daughters, unfortunately he realizes
that they don't need him anymore and they don't necessarily
(27:34):
have the time for him and. Things Adam sandler plays his,
manager and in a sense he is a very similar
character in the sense that he is also realizing that
he has given up his life and a sacrificing time
with his family all to cater to the whims of one,
man his, Client.
Speaker 7 (27:51):
Jay so the towil them are kind of in the same.
Speaker 12 (27:53):
Boat and then it's kind of an insider you, know
in sort of A hollywood insider, film whereby it's that
question if your manager has been with you and help
you get to where you want to go for twenty five,
years are you friends or do you have a working?
Relationship because you take the ten percent of their? Income
where the where do the lines? Lie so, look this is.
Great Both Adam sandler And George clooney are very good
in this. Film it's beautifully. Shot this is a nice
(28:16):
little distraction On.
Speaker 4 (28:17):
Netflix yeah, Nice, okay. Cool so that Is Jay. Kelly
next up is a film showing in. Cinemas it's a.
Documentary this Is beat The, lotto and.
Speaker 6 (28:26):
We have the man who is the author of this,
book which is Called win The.
Speaker 4 (28:31):
Lotto you're in the syndicate, yourself aren't?
Speaker 5 (28:34):
You?
Speaker 6 (28:34):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (28:34):
Indeed and how many times did you win the?
Speaker 9 (28:36):
Jackpot, well we haven't won the.
Speaker 4 (28:39):
JACKPOPS i do you want anything? Yet, no.
Speaker 2 (28:43):
Let's just say down.
Speaker 5 (28:43):
In cork everything is possible and of.
Speaker 2 (28:45):
Course the rest is.
Speaker 4 (28:46):
History all, right let's beat the.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Lotto.
Speaker 12 (28:48):
Okay so this is a rather crazy documentary that tells
the far fetch story of a syndicate who tried to
take on the establishment And Game island's national lottery in
nineteen ninety. Two so when the lotto, began it's a
bit like us here In New. Zealand Jet it's always
pitched as anyone could. Win it's the, dream, Right it's
this big, dream anyone could win it and, things and
(29:11):
the small time accountant he comes up with this idea
that he worked out it would cost just under one
million dollars to buy ticket for every possible combination of
the six numbers.
Speaker 7 (29:20):
In the lotto.
Speaker 12 (29:20):
Game it was a legal, plan perfectly, legal but it
would only work if they managed to get all the
tickets they. Needed and so he convinced this group of
entrepreneurs and professional gamblers to get on.
Speaker 7 (29:29):
Board and it took them.
Speaker 12 (29:30):
Ten months and eleven million ticks to fill out all
the lotto.
Speaker 7 (29:35):
Slips you, know to take all the.
Speaker 12 (29:36):
Slips and then they sent all these people off around
the countryside to try and with these wands of tickets
to buy the actual lott of tickets and, things and
so the lottery then go, oh someone's trying to gain
the system and they're on it and they're, like this is,
unfair so they try and they shut down terminals in the.
Base oh and, anyway it's all about it's a really clever,
plan but had they thought it through? Thoroughly the mass was,
(29:57):
good but was the execution? Perfect and this is where
the fun. Begins so this is a film By Ross,
whitaker and it's filled with a lot of the characters
who were part of The celeborate, scam as well as
journalists who covered the story and, things and it just
takes you back to be very much a particular time and.
Place and it also made me sort of reminiss about our. Lotto,
yes how we feel about it as.
Speaker 4 (30:17):
Well it's a good, fun no, nice, okay? Cool so
that's beat the. Lotto that's a documentary at showing and
cinemas at the. Moment francesca's first, Film Jay, kelly is
the one With George clooney And Adam sandler that is
screening On, netflix and both of those films will of
course be on The News TALKS heb Website saturday.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Morning With jack dam keeping the conversation going through the
weekend The News talks AT.
Speaker 4 (30:38):
B i know it's looking like a pretty good weekend
for much of the, country but if you are just
feeling like you want to put your feed, up you
just want to veg out on the. Couch after ten
we have our screen time segment where we recommend three
shows for watching or streaming at, home and we've got
a new series Of fisk to tell you. About if
you haven't Seen, Fisk it's so. Good ozzie's really Some
(30:58):
australian comedy can just be so so. Good it's An
aussie comedy about a corporate lawyer, who because of very professional,
things ends up going and joining a kind of suburban law,
practice doing conveyancing and that kind of. THING i won't
give too much, away but we'll tell you about the
new season Of first after ten o'clock in our screen
time segment this. Morning got another couple of shows to
(31:20):
recommend as. Well right, now, though time to catch up
with our, Cook Nicky wex is here this, morning killed,
her killed.
Speaker 8 (31:27):
Her i'm all About.
Speaker 4 (31:28):
Christmas, Yes, Well SO i made A Butterfly league lamb
on the barbecue the other. DAY i slightly overcooked. IT
i did it one of THOSE i, know it's just
one of those things WHERE i was, like you know,
what this could have just number two minutes least time
on you, know JUST i mean it was a bit.
Tough it wasn't too, tough BUT i just it wasn't
quite as juicy as it could have been BECAUSE i think.
(31:48):
IT i, KNOW i know it was really. Frustrating BUT i,
mean no one explaining about. Myself, yes but the point
is that A Butterfly league, lamb when done, well is
so so, good and truth be, told it's actually usually
pretty easy to do.
Speaker 13 (32:01):
Well it's so easy to do. Well it's so easy
to get tons of labor into. IT i, MEAN i
love bone and cooking because that's one. Thing but once
you take the bone out and then you've got all
that surface area that you can just jams some flavor
INTO i love. That so and if you slow cook
a butterfly leg of, lamb you sort of can't go
wrong because you're kind of after it really falling, apart because,
(32:24):
yeah on the, barbecue it can toughen up meat a
little bit and it's easy to. Overdo about Three christmases,
AGO i had all these beautiful racks of lamb THAT
i cooked for my, Family like we were just drowning
in racks of lamb Because i've given, them which was,
fantastic AND i undercooked them and so they were just
a little bit pink and a little bit, chewy and
(32:45):
it was it was opposite to what you. Need two
more minutes and we would have been, going this is
the best thing. Ever so here's my slow cooked lamb.
Leg it's butterfly and it's. Beautiful you could just use
the whole bone in if you, like but get your
butcher to take the bone. Out What i'm also going
to say to our listeners is lamb is a. Price
at the, Moment oh my, goodness it's a, price but
(33:05):
it Is. Christmas this is you, know for Your christmas
you could use A butterfli chicken for. This i'm also
going to suggest that you could use three or four
eggplants if you're going the vegetarian, way And i'll give
you a few little tips and tricks along the way for.
Those SO i lay my lamb leg out and make
some small little slits in. It this extra little step is,
great AND i wanted you to slip in little slivers
(33:27):
of garlic in to. There it's a tiny bit of extra,
effort but the flavor award is absolutely. Enormous and then
in a small, bowl you're gonna whisp feed all these
flavors zest.
Speaker 3 (33:37):
And juice of one, orange.
Speaker 13 (33:39):
Two tablespoons of olive, oil two tablespoons of, honey one big,
teaspoon a tablespoon Of dijon, mustard and then a teaspoon
each jack of ground, cumin ground, coriander and Smoked paprikas
you've got these beautiful flavors going, on and a good
heaped teaspoon of flaky sea salt is a great, idea
and some freshly ground black black. PEPPER i throw in
(34:02):
a little bit of rosemy there as a sort of
an ode to our lamb as, well BECAUSE i can't,
Resist and so pour that all over the land and
give it a really good message into every kind of
nook and cranny that you. Can if you've got time
to marinate it, overnight great or for a few, hours.
Fantastic if you, haven't, well them's the. Brakes so oven
goes on about one sixty one seventy nestle lamb into
(34:24):
a roasting, dish and THEN i pour over any of
that left over, marinate and then add in about it
one cup of stock and half a cup of white.
Wine you could delete the wine if you like and
use a little bit more. Stock and then what you
want to do is put a double laugh oiel over
this so it's really really, tight so nothing's escaping out of,
there no steam or. Anything this is the trick to
(34:45):
getting it really meltingly. Tender slide it into the oven
and braise it for about two and a half. HOURS i,
know hot summer's day In New, zealand but why. Not
if you're using a, chicken you can do everything That
i've just told, You but maybe we're looking at one
and a half, hours and if you're using, Eggplant i'd
probably go one and a half hours as, well ex
because we want that melting all, right check it halfway
(35:08):
through possibly see if you need to sneak the stink
in a little bit more liquid into the. Base USUALLY i.
Don't and then once it's soft and, lovely remove that
and remove the. Foil drain off some of the. Juices
you're going to use those in a. Minute increase the
oven temperature to about two hundred degrees, celsius and then
return the dish in, there because you want it a
bit brown and crispy on the. Edges that's kind of
(35:30):
what we're. After and then here's the gig that turns
it into The christmas. Thing you're going to pull it
apart into big, chunks slice it if you, can but you,
know really we're just looking at a big pull apart.
Here put those pan juices into a roasting into the roasting,
dish good, heat tablespoon of flour in there with some soft,
butter and then just make that into a little. Gravy
(35:52):
it's just similar away until it's all. Thickened and then
to serve, it we're piling it onto a. Platter we're
scattering over either some cherry tomatoes or some pomegranate.
Speaker 8 (36:01):
Seeds we want some red in.
Speaker 13 (36:02):
There, hello It's. Christmas lots of mint, leaves lots of chopped,
parts a final grade of orange zest in, there serve
the gravy on the, side and the colors in the
flavor Of this is Just christmas all, round and AS i,
say it will look and taste just as. Delicious if
lamb is beyond you'll reach this summer This. Christmas then
(36:23):
you can use a beautiful butterfly. Chicken or you could
take three or four, eggplants slice them length ways, down
leaving them attached at one end and sort of fan
them out and that way you get all that marinate in.
Speaker 14 (36:35):
There so there you.
Speaker 13 (36:35):
GO i think this is going to be a centerpiece
For christmas that you'll. Love, yeah and so to under
or overcook it like you AND i approach you.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
OBVIOUSLY i don't want to give too much. Away but next,
week you think if our Final saturday morning to.
Speaker 13 (36:52):
It Is and, look next week we're going to do
the grand, finale the.
Speaker 4 (36:56):
Desserts and if.
Speaker 13 (36:59):
Anyone wants to have a look at the canvas in
The herald, TODAY i have got a trifle in, there
AND i have got a. Pavlover i've got something different
for you obviously next, week but that'll get. You that'll
get your started to this.
Speaker 8 (37:10):
Week so there you.
Speaker 4 (37:11):
Go oh so, Good thank, You. NICK i Love christmas.
Dinners yeah, Yeah i'll look forward to next week to
that sounds. Amazing thank. You we're going to make sure
that recipe for the slow cook butterfly lamb legs slash
chicken slash eggplant is up on The News talks He'd

Well right, now it's seven to, ten.
Speaker 3 (37:29):
Giving you the inside scoop on all you need to
Know Saturday morning With Jack Team News talks D Be.
Speaker 4 (37:39):
Jack Says Kevin Merry. CHRISTMAS i think the government is
going a step too far and sticking their noses into
what should be parents'. Jobs when it comes to social.
Media parents, job a pearents job is to look after
their own. Kids what kids can watch or do should
be up to parents. Alone i'm seventy five years, old seven,
daughters nineteen, grandkids an ever increasing number of, greats AND
(37:59):
i will take full responsibility for their. Upbringing thank you very,
much not a bunch of clowns and. Legislators thank you for, That.
Kevin regarding the social media band so, read it is
one of the ten sites In australia that has been,
banned also ten platforms In australia that's been. Banned it's
one THAT i use and WHEN i saw that it

of doesn't feel like some of the. Others so we're

uk as. Well Alan davis is going to be with.

morning together of twenty twenty. Five Comedian Alan davis is
known for his No one and BELOVED i should say
No one in beloved for his, natural relatable storytelling style
and skills on all sorts of different FORMATS, tv on
(39:58):
the page and on. Stage and while he's always been
a bit of a staple Of british television shows LIKE
qi And Jonathan, greek it's been more than a decade
Since ellen last did a stand up comedy, tour that
is until, now and While New zealand didn't make the
first cut of tour, Dates ellen has decided that actually
(40:18):
he just cannot stay away from our. Shows he is
going to bring his show Down under and he's with
us this. Morning held a good. Morning.
Speaker 5 (40:26):
Hello how are you.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
Doing i'm very very, well thank, you delighted to be
speaking with, you longtime. FAN i feel LIKE i grew
up with the sounds Of Jonathan creek just kind of
emanating throughout my, household and moved from that on TO
qi and various other. Things so it is a great
pleasure to be speaking with.
Speaker 5 (40:46):
You thank. You could be, worse could be worse Than Jonathan.
Creek you know the theme tune mate The san, Songs Dance.
Macabroo there's kind of a version of. It it's such
a brilliant theme, tune and PEOPLE i know have often
said to, me Oh god as soon as the music,
starts you. Know BUT i did once catch myself humming
(41:06):
the theme tune AS i was walking down the street
and wandering into the, shop AND i had to kind
of stop, myself realizing that people were turning, heads probably, thinking,
oh look at this idiot just advertising his.
Speaker 4 (41:21):
Presence he thinks he thinks it's his theme music rather
than the theme music for the show.
Speaker 5 (41:27):
Itself it's the star of his own, life and he
Is Jonathan. Creek but, yeah there are worse things you
could have emanating through your.
Speaker 4 (41:34):
Half it's not not only a great, song it's a
Great don't you think it's a great name for a
piece like would dance My car would be as good
if it wasn't Called Dance? MACABRA i don't.
Speaker 5 (41:43):
Know, well, yeah it's it needs an animated.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
Video it's ten years ellen since your last. TOUR i,
know you were a you're a busy, man but, well
why was now the right time to get back on
stage and tour with a Special.
Speaker 5 (42:01):
Well i'm glad to report it has turned out to
be the right time because the show's been pretty. Well
it had been so long with it was feeling beginning
to feel like a. GAMBLE i don't really. KNOW i
wrote a book a few years. Ago we had a
third child in twenty, fifteen there was a. Pandemic there
were a few things that, combined BUT i think REALLY
(42:24):
i spent some time unpacking stuff from my childhood writing about,
it and that process took a while and changed a
lot of HOW i viewed myself and WHAT i wanted
to do and WHAT i wanted to. Say and this recent,
(42:45):
Show Think, ahead it was kind of created around the
same time AS i was writing another volume of memoir
Called White Male Stand, up which is about dealing with
issues from my childhood in my career and in my
adult life or not dealing with, them and so some
of it draws on some of that. Stuff so though
it's maybe difficult, material BUT i Feel i'm able to
(43:09):
access it and created the. Show at all my stand
up shows have created conjunction with audiences working on material
in that, way And i've got to a place now
WHERE i think the show is really Quite so it's
a bit richer and deeper and better than Stuff i've done,
before and it's quite, relatable and So i'm really sort
(43:29):
of proud of. It i'm Not i've always been pleased
to make people, laugh BUT i haven't really previously looked
at my material, thinking, Oh i'm really proud of that's
tasking hutch, routine you. Know but NOW i feel Like
i'm in a better place to you, know have something
to say and have a reason to be up. There so.
Speaker 4 (43:49):
Do you feel that you are as well as as
well as entertaining audiences and making people, laugh do you
feel like there is a kind of deeper driving purpose
behind the show and that you have something to, say
there is a message you want to. Give, YEAH i think.
Speaker 5 (44:06):
SO i mean the goal is still ultimately is to
make people laugh as much AS i possibly, can AND
i think of that as my job as a. COMEDIAN
i don't just want to be. ENGAGING i want to be,
hilarious and that's WHY i set out to. Do and you,
know there are some good bits it is. Nice after the,
(44:26):
SHOW i quite often take the chance to sign a
few books and meet some of the audiencing people are, saying,
oh and the stuff you're talking, about by the, way
similar thing happened to, me or something happened to a
friend of, mine or it's you, know it's good that
this stuff can be aired and you, know let's not you,
(44:47):
know carry the shame forever kind of. Thing so the
feedback is really, GOOD feedbackx really positive both on content
and on laugh. Strike so it's kind of right.
Speaker 4 (44:58):
Just to be totally, clear And i'm not going to
ask you to go into all of the details, now
but you're, right, really you, KNOW i think really move
about it your experiences in your memoir about your experiences
of childhood, abuse and it's the same content that you
are touching on at times during your during your. Special
(45:20):
but how do you think about that kind of narrative.
Weave is there is there a risk for one of
a better, word when you're talking about that kind of material,
publicly that it's very hard to get the audience back
in a laughing frame of.
Speaker 5 (45:32):
Mind well that's the. Test there's sort of challenge for.
Me and you, know WHEN i say to the audience
WHEN i had talked to them about having my father
arrested for historical sexual, ABUSE i, Said i've never talked
about this on stage before BECAUSE i was always afraid
of exactly this, silence because there's always you can guarantee
(45:56):
a pin drop silence at that which comes as a
total revelation to the majority of the people in the.
Room and THEN i talked to them about perhaps feeling
less like an audience and more like they're in a hostage,
situation but not to, fear not here to make you,
uncomfortable here to just we're going to spend a bit
(46:17):
of time on this. Area the response has been really.
Good people have just engaged and people my experience of comedy.
Aunts and then these people aren't, idiots you. Know these
people have got lives of their, own experiences of their.
Own either they've been through things, themselves or they have
friends who have or partners or. Spouses this stuff's in the,
(46:39):
world and just the same as parenting, is or illness
or lean heavily on this and the second half of
the show erectile. Dysfunction these are all the issues of our.
Speaker 4 (46:50):
Time, YEAH i was taken aback a little bit by
your dates of your, tour, right SO i noticed something
and the tour dates this, Year, ellen and that you
are Touring australia over the summer and then you've got
a little bit of a break and you're coming back
To New zealand in the middle of next. Year AND
i did think it was a curious coincident that your
(47:12):
dates In australia seemed to coincide rather. NEATLY i, thought
with The, ashes are you a cricket are you a
cricket fan? Manager at?
Speaker 5 (47:19):
WELL i think that was very. FORTUNATE i, mean what
a happy accident.
Speaker 13 (47:27):
Is?
Speaker 4 (47:27):
That is that part of the Plan.
Speaker 5 (47:28):
I'm going to take in a couple of, days a
couple of Day i've got a day of the j.
Speaker 4 (47:34):
Booked oh how special for the boxing.
Speaker 5 (47:37):
Day for the twenty. EIGHTH i think it, is oh.
Wow BUT i tried to go to The ashes In
melbourne years ago AND i booked tickets for day four
And england had been done buy an innings in three
days and so this TIME i booked for day. Three
(47:58):
i'm hoping for some.
Speaker 4 (47:59):
Cricket how do you feel about, bearsball because we feel
a sort of In New. Zealand we feel a connection
to The english style of game at the. Moment and
then Obviously brendan McCallum as the. Coach Tim Southy New
Zealand great is also offering his. Assistance there are various
Other New, zealanders all sort of plotting throughout the team's coaching.
(48:22):
Organization how do you feel About bears ball and, Principle.
Speaker 5 (48:28):
WELL i find it fascinating. REALLY i remember Hearing Andy
murray talk about playing, tennis and he said when he was,
young if you just get the ball in, play we
wait for the other guy to make a. Mistake usually you.
Win you make less mistakes than the other. Player usually you,
win and then you get into the top one hundred
or the top, fifty and the other guy doesn't make any. Mistakes,
(48:51):
yeah and if you want to beat, him you've got
to go for your. Shots you've got to, play you've
got to show what you've. Got who's the better? Player,
Actually and that's WHY i, feel you, Know Ben stokes
is leading a team that has a bit of that about. Them,
Okay i'm going To i'm going to hit you as
hard AS i, can often be, afraid and it's about
(49:14):
getting getting on the front foot and being. Aggressive and
it's when it goes wrong when you lose your, wicket
when you've gone after a ball and lost your wicket
cheap and you can only be out. Once it's cricket
remains the. Same don't get out is a very important
part of. It but the principle behind it about getting
on the front, foot scoring, quickly being. Aggressive it's filling,
(49:38):
stadiums it's getting people, watching and you, KNOW i love watching.
Them stokes of course is it's a superstar of, sport
not just. Cricket AND i really really hope he's fit
because you, know he breaks quite. Often it's like a
kind of A formula one. Car everything's so, fragile it's
(49:59):
so highly tuned.
Speaker 4 (50:04):
As a.
Speaker 5 (50:04):
Part it's not this is not a Land. Rover this
is a high performance. Machine but, Yeah i'm looking forward
to the ashes and AND i like the. COLOR i
like the way he just sits on the balcony with
his feet up in his shades. On there's something very
self assured about. HIM i think when they look at,
him they must, think, well he doesn't seem. Bothered maybe
(50:26):
we're Doing.
Speaker 4 (50:27):
Yeah he certainly has a swagger about. Him there's no doubting. That,
hey why do you, think why do you think panel
shows are so beloved and successful in THE uk but
barely exists in THE.
Speaker 5 (50:41):
Us, WELL i think the origin of a lot of
them in THE uk is. RADIO Bbc Light Entertainment Radio
department is the origin for a lot of panel.
Speaker 4 (50:53):
Shows whether It's The goons Or My word or something like.
Speaker 5 (50:57):
That, well le's less The goons because they were on
their feet doing silly. Voices but there's a long tradition
and some panel shows started there and stay. There you.
Know there's a show That David mitchell has Called The Unbelievable.
Truth you just sit around a panel and you give
us talk and you've got to smuggle things that are
true amongst a blizzard of. Lies it's a really good.
(51:20):
Format it's never transferred TO. Tv they've done about twenty
series of. It everyone goes on, it everyone loves doing.
It and On radio four AND Bbc radio we have
this And i'm sure you could get to it somewhere
on the. Internet you've got all this resource and so
transferring those kinds of formats onto. Television four or five
(51:41):
people sat behind a table as if they were recording
a radio. SHOW i don't think they have that in The.
States they don't have the radio that we. Have THE
bbc is often under, attack but because it's, subsidized really
it doesn't have to compete in the marketplace and in
the other broadcasters and. Newspapers they hate, That they would
(52:04):
rather it wasn't. There but for those of us who
listen or to it or work for, it oh Please
god preserve it because, well think of what you, lose you,
know and shows LIKE qi are a good example of
that because they it. Originates you, Know John lloyd had
(52:24):
created it was A bbc radio. Producer he created a
show Called The News, quiz which is a radio panel,
show quiz show based on the. News it's been running
for fifty. Years, yeah he created it in his. Twenties
and without THE, bbc there's No News, quiz there's NO.
Qi there's there's a lot of. Nothing.
Speaker 4 (52:45):
Yeah, well, SO i MEAN i think THAT'S i think
it's a great. Point AND i can only imagine that
after your years ON, qi you were the most valued
member and any pub quiz, Team now are.
Speaker 5 (52:57):
You i'm. Useless i'm useless BECAUSE i can't retain. Anything
and IF i WATCHED, qi WHICH i don't often because
Obviously i've got a wife and children and how COULD
i do it to? Them but if it comes, ON
i can't remember any of the. RECORDINGS i, Said, OH
i don't remember that person being, On and then the
(53:17):
conversation will start and someone will say, something And i'll
sit on myself at home and think of something THAT
i would say at that, point and then the me
on screen actually says. It so my brain is quite
limited on this sort Of i'm a bit like a
rat that only goes down certain alleyways in your. Garden
i've Just i've become entirely predictable to the scriptwriters and
(53:39):
the people who do the. Questions they could trip me,
up but that the first thing they do is get
up in the morning and write five things that that
idiot will get, wrong and then they could take the day.
Speaker 4 (53:47):

Says peter absolutely Love Allen. Davis thank you so much
for the. Interview fantastic to hear that he's coming To New. Zealand,
Yeah i'm a big fan from wayback as. WELL qi
so GOOD A Jonathan creek so good underrated SHOW i
Reckon Jonathan craig ninety ninety two is our text number
if you want to send us a message this. Morning
speaking of FANTASTIC tv. Shows now it's time for your
(55:02):
screen time picks for this. Week Tara reward is our
screen time. Experts she's got three recommendations for. Us Good.
Atara good Morning. Lee let's begin this morning With The
abandons On. Netflix.
Speaker 15 (55:14):
Yeah this is a New American western series that just
began On. Netflix it Stars Gillian anderson And Lena heady
and it's made By Kurt, sutter who created shows Like
sons Of anarchy And The, shield and those are both
quite dark and gritty, shows and has bought that kind
of sensibility to this New western. Series this is set
(55:35):
In washington in the eighteen, fifties and it's about two
women who are each the matriarch of their family and
their battle over some land That Jillian anderson's character wants
to mind for. Silver and it's about how far each
woman will go to get what they want and what
they'll do to protect their. Family and it's about love
and revenge and greed and survival as. WELL A western
(55:58):
with two women calling the shots is quite a modern
take on this. Era BUT i think you're watching this
for a bit of escapism and a show that you
won't have to think too hard, about because this sort
of embraces all the cliches you would expect in A.
Western the gun slinging and the cattle stealing and the
tough town in the middle of. Nowhere it's a bit
Like sons Of anarchy mixed in With, yellowstone Like i've
(56:18):
got horses instead of, motorbikes and you, know it is
a bit. Formulaic there's a few soapy love stories in
here as. Well BUT i would watch this just For Gillian,
anderson WHO i always think is so, good so, compelling
and here she's playing this, mean ruthless matriarch who has
not going to back down, easily and she just holds
this whole show.
Speaker 5 (56:39):
Together oh.
Speaker 4 (56:40):
Fantastic. Cool, okay that's The abandons is On, netflix ON
tv AND z. Plus the Tense british drama Trigger.
Speaker 15 (56:47):
Point, yeah there's a new season of Trigger point which
starts tomorrow on TVN Z. Plus and Trigger point is
one of those shows that you, know it's completely over
the top and this stuff would never happen in real,
life but it doesn't. Matter this is fun and fast
and reliably great. Television this is A british police. Drama
it's made BY. Jd, mccurio who of course created brilliant
(57:10):
shows Like line Of duty And. Bodyguard and it's about
a bomb disposal officer Named Lana, washington who as a
war veteran and as now the go to expert for
diffusing bombs under extreme pressure and basically in every episode
she uses her unique set of skills to prevent terrorist
(57:30):
attacks involving explosives and. Hostages she's protecting the city Of
london while also trying to find out the identity.
Speaker 7 (57:38):
Of these terrorist serial.
Speaker 15 (57:40):
Killers that's great. Stuff lana is played By vicky, McClure
who start in line of. Duty she knows how to
deliver in these twisty police. Dramas you, know it's, slick
lots of, cliffhangers, intension AND i think if you just
embrace the ridiculousness of it all and don't worry too
much about the odd plot hole or how far fetched
(58:01):
it might, seem then you can just really enjoy this
for what it, is which is just. Entertainment season three
drops tomorrow, morning but seasons one and two are already
up ON tvnz.
Speaker 4 (58:11):
Plus, now, okay, cool so that is trigger. Point it's
ON tvnz plus and On. Netflix.
Speaker 15 (58:16):
Fisc, Yeah fisk is one of my favorite comedies and
the third season has just dropped On. Netflix this is
a really Dry australian. Comedy it Stars Kitty, flanagan who
also co created and wrote the, show and she Plays
Helen Tudor, fisk who is a corporate lawyer who goes
through a very, bad humiliating divorce and loses everything and
(58:39):
has to move in with her elderly father and his,
boyfriend and she has to take a job in a,
small run down suburban law firm that deals with wills
and estates and fisc is quite socially. Awkward she never
says the right, thing she doesn't suffer, Fools she's not
really a people, person and the humor here is in
her daily interactions with her colleagues and her clients and
(59:02):
all the local. Idiots it's such a delightful, show very
sharp and, witty but also quite warm and, gentle and
the characters are quirky but very. Lovable if you like
other comedies Like utopia Or colin From accounts or Even
Frontline Going Way, BACK i think you'll love us as.
Speaker 4 (59:20):
Well, yeah it's so. GOOD i really really enjoyed First so,
yeah total call that. Recommendation fisk is On. Netflix, tara
did you ever Watch Jonathan creek back in the?
Speaker 15 (59:28):
DAY i was just thinking in the Intro Jonathan creek
is such an underrated. Show, yeah it was great and
of course ON qi as. Well Alan davis love him ON.
Qi he just plays that role.
Speaker 5 (59:39):
Of the.
Speaker 16 (59:41):
Dance.
Speaker 5 (59:42):
Yeah, yeah it's so.
Speaker 4 (59:43):
Great, yeah he's very. Good, now thank you so. Much
we'll make Sure tara's recommendations for this week's screen time
picks her up on the news talk he'd b. Website
So The abandons is the one With Gillian anderson that's On.
Netflix fisk is The australian comedy that's On netflix as.
Well Trigger point is The british drama with the bomb
bomb Disposal expert that's ON tv AND Z. Plus thanks your.
(01:00:06):

Getting your weekends.
Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
Started It's Saturday morning With Jack team on News talks
By La.
Speaker 4 (01:01:00):
So back In, july The australian Outfit King gizzard and
The Lizard wizard pulled their entire discography From spotify because
of the streamer's investment IN ai powered military. Software and
this track might sound kind of. Familiar it sounds like
it could Be King gizzard and The Lizard, wizard but
(01:01:22):
it is. Not it is AN ai doppelganger Named King Lizard,
wizard which appeared on the music streaming service in the
absence of the original band, titles, lyrics, structures maladies of
THE ai slop songs have been derived directly from the
real bands of music and. Creations and to top it,
(01:01:43):
Off spotify pushed THE ai impersonator within its algorithm so
that the fake versions of real songs reached tens of
thousands of listeners before anyone was able to meaningfully raise.
Concern fascinating ay and a real cautionary tale SEE ai
is just one of the many things that music fans
have had to try and wrap their heads around this.
Year our music reviewer is going to be with this
(01:02:04):
performance day with his thoughts on what else has made
the list of the worst things about me being a
music fan in twenty twenty. FIVE i know that at
this time of year we usually do best, of but
now we're going we're going to round our hut twenty
twenty five with the worst of when it comes to
trends in. Music before mid day, today before eleven, o'clock
we're in the. Garden next, up, though our texpert is
(01:02:25):
here with his thoughts on one of the curious points
of opposition To australia's social media, band.
Speaker 5 (01:02:33):
The headlines and The Hard.
Speaker 1 (01:02:34):
Questions it's the mic asking Breakfast.
Speaker 11 (01:02:37):
Timary principle's payoffer has been. Rejected Robin brown is the
principle Of Birtuville school and a member of THE nzdi negotiating.
Team you've been offered up to twenty one thousand dollars
plus four point six, percent but you still want another
fifteen on top of.
Speaker 15 (01:02:50):
That what we.
Speaker 16 (01:02:50):
Want is recognition for all of the unsustainable workload and curriculum.
Speaker 11 (01:02:54):
Upheable if they say to you we give you fifteen thousand,
dollars we will take the.
Speaker 16 (01:02:57):
Offer we will take that offer out to our principles
and see whether they would take that.
Speaker 4 (01:03:01):
Off, robin that's a lot of.
Speaker 11 (01:03:03):
Money you guys are basically asking for an increase of
thirty six two thousand dollars class four point six.
Speaker 7 (01:03:08):
Percent no one else gets.
Speaker 4 (01:03:09):
That kind of.
Speaker 1 (01:03:09):
Money heather Duplusy ellen on The Mic Hosking Breakfast Back
monday from six am with A Vida Retirement communities On
News talks deadb twenty.
Speaker 4 (01:03:19):
Two to eleven On News. Talks, yeah but we started
the show this morning by talking about The Australian Social
Media band which has just come in to effect for
under sixteen year Old so you remember there are ten
platforms or sites or apps that are currently banned under
The australian, legislation but one of, Them, reddit has decided
to Take australia to. Court Our Textbert Paul steenhouses here
(01:03:42):
with the. Details good, Morning. Paul what Does reddit have
to say for?
Speaker 14 (01:03:45):
Itself, Yeah i'm Backing reddit on this. ONE i, think, Actually,
jack it's making two. ARGUMENTS i think one of them
is better than the. Other so the first one is
that it says that the law limits the free political
discourse of. Children NOW i would probably say if you
can't vote until you're, eighteen that one feels a little bit,
Weak BUT.
Speaker 10 (01:04:04):
I like its second.
Speaker 14 (01:04:05):
Argument, okay now read it is a website where you
effectively it's like one of the.
Speaker 4 (01:04:12):
Almost old school.
Speaker 14 (01:04:13):
Forums you talk about topics and you post questions and
you get, answers and you post interesting links and discuss.
Them it's not really about, people. Okay and So reddit
has called itself from front of The courts a collection
of public fora arranged by, subject WHICH i kind of.
(01:04:33):
Liked whoever wrote that kind of needs a needs a
little check mak beside their. Name but what it's saying
is that because you don't typically follow people like you
do on other social platforms like your, facebooks like your,
instagrams they believe that they should be. Immune they, say
you follow, subjects and of course they. Don't they don't
(01:04:55):
don't lie about the fact they. Don't you move away
from the fact that there are interactions between, people but
it's not really about person to person. Communication read it
and they, say is part of the case that you
know you're basically discouraging knowledge.
Speaker 4 (01:05:12):
Sharing, yeah, SEE i am quite an Enthusiastic reddit. User
if we are to call it social media, Broadly, YEAH
i think it's really, good and SO i follow a few.
Things kind of resonate with me in that. Argument So
first of, all you don't follow, people so you follow
subject matter that's interesting to. YOU i THINK i. FOLLOW
(01:05:34):
i follow various geography related, subreddits various political. SUBREDDITS i
follow a submarine enthusiasts, subreddit things like, that, Right New
zealand gardening, subreddits personal finance, subreddits stuff like. That BUT
i find it's.
Speaker 14 (01:05:54):
Funny when people start to say what THEY'RE i.
Speaker 4 (01:05:57):
KNOW i, know are you honestly surprised that at submarines
and geography and that it took me so long to find?
Speaker 14 (01:06:01):
It it's, nerdy is, everything which is the. Problem, yes
deepest darkest thoughts are kind of revealed. Accidentally but that's
why people never want to share their user name On.
Speaker 4 (01:06:12):
Reddit that's exactly What i'm about to say. Next so
people don't use their don't use their, names and don't
really post as, themselves right they post you just kind
of have anonymous. Names but also the culture Of, reddit
and maybe this comes down to the subreddits THAT i.
Follow it's not very. Nasty it's often quite, Helpful like
you can, post you, know SOMETIMES i post things and say,
yeah AND i, say, oh this Is i'm having a
(01:06:33):
problem with, This like SOMETIMES i do it in The
New zealand gardening. ONE i, say, oh what's wrong with this?
Plant and people, say, oh give it a bit of.
THIS i, KNOW i KNOW i use, both so, Yeah
I'm i'm sort of supportive Of. Reddit what do you think,
though as as someone who you know thinks deeply about
the impact that social media and digital platforms are having
(01:06:54):
on our, lives do you think that The australian law
is net positive or net? Negative what do you? Think?
Speaker 14 (01:07:03):
Oh, BOY i like it in CONCANT i just don't
know how you really enforce it. RIGHT i don't know
what mechanisms s theyre using to actually make sure the
kids are staying off of. It BUT i, mean, LOOK
i think it will probably introduce a whole generation of
kids to. VPNs, yes maybe it'll make them a little
more tech. Savvy, look DO i think that kids need
(01:07:26):
to be on?
Speaker 8 (01:07:26):
It?
Speaker 14 (01:07:27):
No DO i envy parents of teenagers or tweens or
WHATEVER i called, Like absolutely. NOT i think making those
decisions about when they go on these types of services is, tough.
Speaker 10 (01:07:39):
Right the peer pressure is.
Speaker 14 (01:07:40):
Real but, YEAH i hate to be that person to
say it's going to be a wait and, see BUT
i do THINK i was away a couple of weeks
ago In Hamilton island In australia in The Great barrier.
Reef and this is going to sound a little bit,
crazy but the, town the little island felt like it
was kind of stuck in time AND i was on,
holiday SO i wasn't really on my, phone wasn't on my,
(01:08:01):
laptop and, BOY i did think it feels like a
simpler life when you don't have your.
Speaker 4 (01:08:05):
Device one hundred. Percent, no, no, NO i think for that. Reason,
YEAH i think for that.
Speaker 14 (01:08:11):
Reason it's LIKE i THINK i can see Where australia is,
going and it made big headlines over here in THE ui.
Speaker 4 (01:08:15):
Is no everywhere in the, world all the, yeah all.
Speaker 14 (01:08:18):
The big networks were covered. IT i think a lot
of the sentiments is when it's, when when Will america
be bold?
Speaker 5 (01:08:23):
Enough?
Speaker 4 (01:08:24):
Yeah, YEAH i tend to agree with. That it's going
to be very interesting to see if other countries are
quick to. Follow thank you so, Much. Paul that's our,
Textbook Paul. Stenhouse Doctor Brian betty's here next with tips
on how to stay safe over summer seventeen to. Eleven
no better.
Speaker 3 (01:08:40):
Way to kick off your weekend than With Jack saturday
morning With.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
Jack Team News talk, said be go to.
Speaker 4 (01:08:48):
Eleven how resident Doctor Brian betty is. Here good, Morning
oh Cure.
Speaker 8 (01:08:54):
Jack nice to be here, Here nice.
Speaker 4 (01:08:55):
To be chanting you to see you for the final
time in twenty twenty.
Speaker 16 (01:08:57):
Five it's hard to, believe isn't.
Speaker 4 (01:08:59):
It, yeah, yeah, YEAH i know we say this every,
Year but some THINGS i will think a cliches for good,
reason you, know and this is one of. THEM i, Reckon,
hey it has already been a stinking hot start to.
SUMMER i think we. HAVE i Think november was the
Hottest november we've had on, record and you've got some
(01:09:21):
tips this morning about staying safe over. Summer and the
heat is front of.
Speaker 16 (01:09:26):
Mind absolutely, absolutely and the sun in, particular and you
just say the Hottest november we've had and that's probably
going to continue Through. December so, LOOK i think with the,
sun the sun is, fantastic makes us feel, Better VITAMIN
d to the, skin which which actually helps all our,
bones and lots of positive. Benefits we do need to
be careful and we do need to think about the
(01:09:47):
basics when it comes to the sun, now in particular,
sunburn and we need to be especially careful during the
day between those hours of ten am and four, pm
when THOSE uv rays are very very sort of, intense
especially over summer now in particular children children have very
(01:10:07):
very sensitive skin and they get burnt. Easily and it's
one of the commonest THINGS i see in the clinic
and at the after hours WHEN i do after, hours
as parents bringing their children. In they've just been outside
for a bit too long and they come in with
this quite severe at times. Sunburn so, look think about using,
sunscreen you, know every two to three, hours and after,
swimming we're, hats sunglasses and protective. Clothing think about those,
(01:10:32):
basics especially with your. Kids really really, important really important.
Speaker 4 (01:10:37):
Advice it is the season of course for mosquitos and
other various biting.
Speaker 16 (01:10:42):
Insects, yeah, yeah absolutely, so, yeah we get. Bitten so,
look you, know we've got sandflies and mosquitos are probably
the two biggest thing to note is mosquitos tend to
come out in the dawn or early hours or in
the early, evening whereas sand flies tend to be all.
Day and we tend to get sand flies around running
water or, rivers whereas mosquitos tend to be around sort
(01:11:04):
of still water and that's where they and to. Breed,
however you know if they bite, you they're little bits
of saliva that goes into the skin can cause an
allergic reaction and a really really itchy. Bite you, know
sandfly bites and notorious mosquitos are the same and they
can just drive your. Nuts so, look avoid getting bitten
is really really important if we go into those sand
(01:11:26):
flow or moscato type. Areas so, again wearing insect repellent
really important if you like natural products and lavender or
tea tree oil are the ones you want to. Use and,
again wearing long clothes at those times where we might
be exposed to sand flies or mosquitos is really really.
Important sometimes you can get quite an allergic. Reaction you
(01:11:49):
get these very, red itchy welts that come. Up, look
itch cream from the pharmacy is really. Good calamine lotion works.
Well if it is really quite an intense, reaction then
you may need to see your doctor and have a
chat about. It we use steroid creams and other things
and anti estamines try and control. That but avoid getting
(01:12:09):
bitten is probably the big.
Speaker 4 (01:12:10):
One, yeah that is a big. One so too is
the message on alcohol and moderation at this time of,
year one that many of US i think it can
benefit from being reminded.
Speaker 16 (01:12:20):
Of, yeah, look look alcohol is that. ONE i think
all things in moderation and alcohol in. Particular so what
we do know is alcohol can exacerbate worse and, dehydration
especially in the. Heat so, look one of the little
tips is if you are, drinking alternate between an alcoholic
beverage and a glass of. Water it just keeps your
(01:12:41):
fluids up and can actually help keep your. Hydrated, obviously
the big thing with alcohol it reduces our. Inhibition it
reduces our checks or our, inhibitions and so we need
to avoid things like swimming in particular with alcohol is.
Dangerous so people are into trouble all the, time jumping
into the water after they've been. Drinking boating or driving
(01:13:04):
under the influence obviously are things that we eat to
watch out for because of that impaired judgment that can
actually have. Occurred the other thing that's always good with,
alcohol eat before you, Drink, okay so it just slows
that absorption of alcohol can be really really use. Useful
and watch out for heat and olcohol, again it can
it can really exacerbate heat exhaustion or the symptoms of heat.
(01:13:30):
Stroke so so, yeah our cohol is just one of
those things you do have to watch out. For stay,
hydrated eat if you're, drinking and all things.
Speaker 4 (01:13:37):
Moderation love your, Work, brian thank you so much for
everything this. Year we really appreciate. It have a wonderful,
summer won't.
Speaker 16 (01:13:42):
You, yeah same with, You, jack and, look thanks very.
Much i've really enjoyed this. Year so.
Speaker 4 (01:13:47):
Good that's Doctor Brian betty with us for the final
time in twenty twenty. Five ten to eleven non news.
Dogs y'd be.
Speaker 1 (01:13:55):
Gardening With Still shop yet dollars off loads of selected
still tools.
Speaker 4 (01:14:00):
Through five passes our man in the. Garden good, Morning
good Morning.
Speaker 9 (01:14:05):
JACK i LOVE i love this morning's program with with
everything you did on the first, LOT i loved.
Speaker 6 (01:14:11):
It it was.
Speaker 9 (01:14:11):
Great and thank you for your card to thank.
Speaker 4 (01:14:14):
You, yeah they're a very Good now it's on the
private place and the mental place at our. PLACE i
thank you very, much And julie same.
Speaker 5 (01:14:20):
Here May.
Speaker 4 (01:14:21):
Hey things are heating up obviously and there are a
few that's not officially what summer for another week or,
so is? It according to the.
Speaker 9 (01:14:28):
Route twenty second Of december four. Three, yeah of.
Speaker 4 (01:14:31):
Course, yeah it's on my calendar as. Well but there
are a few summary bits and bobs you're noticing around
the garden.
Speaker 9 (01:14:39):
Already, well this is the, Place this is the time
WHEN i really love to be outside like an.
Speaker 5 (01:14:44):
Sister.
Speaker 9 (01:14:44):
Serious gazella is a is A i. Love the name
is a potter wasp that came out of out Of
europe and it's a beautiful, thing little little thing that
that basically is always around in your garden and does
quite a bit of, pollenateing which is really. Cool i'll
leave it at. That you can see the picture on
the thing that we sent To, libby so it's be the.
(01:15:06):
Website the second thing is the problem that you get
with with with the. Gardeners, SAY i don't get enough
cukurbets growing at the moment that there's, cucumbers melons and
things like, that and it's probably because the plant. Thinks
the plant thinks you realize that there isn't enough pollen.
Here but the truth, is of, course that there is
(01:15:28):
not enough pollinators there to make the plant think there is.
Enough not enough Pollen da da da. Da so what
you do is get a lot of pollen growing around
your kuk. Kuberts And i've got this wonderful plant called
origin and the blue. Dwarf it's a really beautiful. Thing
as you can, see that would attract so many pollinators
(01:15:50):
that then there will make a lot of female flowers
going and that means you're getting.
Speaker 4 (01:15:57):
Fruit, simple, right a Simple, okay that's.
Speaker 9 (01:16:00):
It and then, finally and that is something for the
kids to look, at especially if they're a bit, older you, know,
anyway is the old wooll card to bee that fights
for its. Pollen and it fights by literally attacking bees
which are a lot larger than these things and, bumblebees
(01:16:20):
and they squeeze them literally and bringing them dive bombing
them and bringing them down to. Earth that is an unbelievable.
Site you should see. That it's better than WATCHING. TV
i bet you it's. Brilliant, well they dive on by
going really fast on a, bee then squeeze with the
(01:16:42):
with their, abdomen squeeze the bee in two places and
the bee suddenly gets a smack that it can't fly
anymore and goes you.
Speaker 5 (01:16:50):
Boom it's it's.
Speaker 9 (01:16:52):
Amazing so there you, go and they go for lambs
here they go for all sorts of stuff that they, like,
lavender et, cetera et. Cetera but they are the most
beautiful fighters on.
Speaker 5 (01:17:03):
AIR i love.
Speaker 16 (01:17:04):
It.
Speaker 4 (01:17:05):
Nice, Hey i'm growing kokerberts for the first time at
my place this. Summer But I'M i Think i've got
them slightly too close to the to the, tomatoes because
they're obviously just, well they're just reaching for each other
the whole. Time they want to be best. Mates, oh you, know.
Speaker 9 (01:17:21):
But that should, know that shouldn't be too. Problematic as
long as they're pollinators in the area you will Have
you'll be fine with the ku.
Speaker 4 (01:17:28):
Kurbets, Okay so my cucumbers and my it doesn't matter
if my cucumber plant and my tomato plant ends up
sort of making friends with each other and the vines
wrap around each other and the hold.
Speaker 9 (01:17:37):
Hand okay Till marthas will be high enough to let it.
Speaker 4 (01:17:40):
Go, yeah oh very. Good, Okay, hey thank you so.

phenomena in twenty twenty five that have been kind of
rubbish for music. Fans so he's going to talk through
that very. Shortly our travel correspondent will be in soon

quantum Of, menace which sounds like a fantastic read for
any Big James bond fans in your. Family, right it's
nine past eleven in time to catch up with our
(01:20:31):
sustainability Correspondent Kate hall is here with us this. MORNING
a good. Morning what are you counting down the days To?
Christmas are you into it in a big?
Speaker 17 (01:20:41):
Way i'm into in an a medium, Way i'd call.
Speaker 4 (01:20:45):
IT i would have thought any excuse for unfettered consumption
would be right up the, Rally.
Speaker 17 (01:20:50):
Kate christmas mixed feelings because you can do an Awesome
christmas that has great impact and do some, fun sustainable
da why, Things but just looking at all the, sales
EVEN i get bombarded with pop up it just makes
you feel it sick.
Speaker 4 (01:21:06):
Sometimes, yeah as your First christmas with your daughter, though
that'll be. Cool, yes, YEAH i mean, SURE i have
absolutely no idea what's going, on but that's not the. Point. Yeah, Anyway,
hey you've got some really useful little tips for us
this morning on sustainable activities to do over the summer
break and as well as you know a bit of
(01:21:26):
a time to kind of relax and, disconnect and also
with those hours in the, day there's a bit of
opportunity to go and do some things that you, know
can can push sustainability forward a little. Bit so let's
begin with a waste.
Speaker 17 (01:21:37):
Audit, yes this is one that takes a bit of
time and a bit of, thought so it's a great
one to do over the summer. Break so a waste
audit generally it can look like how big or smaller
you want it, to BUT i advise looking through a
week's worth of your, waist so keep it. Asize and
then when you look through and you can find kind
of the lowest thing for the main waste. Culprits it may,
(01:22:00):
be you, know a plastic bread, bag and so you may, Go,
okay how CAN i do this more low. Waste i'm
going to go to my local. Bakery i'm going to
bring my favorite bread bag and that's What i'm going
to do in the new. Year or you could find
a bread, recipe anything that kind of the main waste
kind of culprits are really good to start with first
because you're reducing a lot of your waste all at.
(01:22:23):
Once so, yeah a waste or it can you, know
can sound a little, messy and if it is, messy
that's probably a big sign you need to start composting
and dealing worth your organic waste because your rubbish bin
should actually not really smell or be messy if you're
dealing with organic waste. Properly and that's another great one
to do is start a.
Speaker 4 (01:22:42):
Compost nice oh yeah, true, okay, yeah even at the
time of. YEAR i mean stuff's going to be composting
pretty quickly in the heat a, yes, yep, yeah it's very.
Speaker 17 (01:22:50):
REWARDING i mean it can be a little bit more
stinky if you don't have enough brown. Matter so that's
your toilet rolls and paper that's really need to add
a lot of that over, summer otherwise the slides and
things can can get a bit too. Much but, yeah
starting a compost is a really good. Idea composts the
cashi worm. Farm, again when you have the extra time over,
(01:23:10):
summer this is you, know the opportunity to do.
Speaker 4 (01:23:13):
It and if you're in the, garden you might as
well do some.
Speaker 17 (01:23:16):
Gardening, yes, yes that's. Small if you have never grown
anything in your life that with you, know you may
sat with some. Herbs you, know even if you're in an,
apartment you can have space maybe on your windowsill for
a few just get stuck into, yeah growing something that
you don't have to buy at the.
Speaker 4 (01:23:35):
Supermarket it's basically impossible not to just grow an enormous
tomato plant right, Now like it's almost. IMPOSSIBLE i just
cannot believe how quickly tomatoes grow every. YEAR i, think you,
know you, know you like, go you water the plants
at like eight thirty at, night you come out at
six o'clock the next, morning you're, like, oh it's just
it's growing a, foot, okay.
Speaker 17 (01:23:54):
Totally. Yeah my favorite is compost, tomatoes the kind of, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah i've got a few, that, yeah grow out through
kind of the little vents and so it's just a,
yeah free tomato.
Speaker 2 (01:24:07):
Plants yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:08):
Nice so, okay if you have your compost set, up
you're doing a bit of. Gardening but you want to
go even, further you could be picking your own.
Speaker 2 (01:24:16):
Fruit.
Speaker 17 (01:24:17):
YES i think this is a fun one that everyone
seems to do at some point during the, summer is
go to a strawberry field and put your own. FRUIT
i do this in quite a full on way BECAUSE
i try to bring as many buckets as possible and
get a whole lot THAT i can freeze them SO
i don't have to buy berries and packaging and a
(01:24:37):
lot of the ones that we have at the supermarket
and the frozen section that we get.
Speaker 6 (01:24:41):
You, know all year.
Speaker 17 (01:24:42):
Around for, us moodies and stuff are actually from, overseas
so it's a great opportunity to make them. Yourself even
if you're into, preserving you could preserve the berries and
just kind of stuck up for winter stores so you
can still enjoy summer.
Speaker 4 (01:24:56):
Fruits all of us love going to the beach over,
summer and you, reckon there's a really simple way for
us to give back a little.
Speaker 17 (01:25:03):
Bit, yes there's often beach plain apps that are organized
by your local, groups but you can also just do
a diy. ONE i, think you, know we spend so
much time at the beach and it's nice when it is.
CLEAN i, Know i've seen some pretty horrific waiste and
mess left behind from people who think they can enjoy
your day at the beach and leave their, rubbish which
(01:25:24):
is really. Unfortunate BUT i think if we're enjoying, something
it's only fair that we give. Back and it may sound,
like you, know it's my, Holidays, Kate i'm, off you,
know but this is our country and we need to
be proud of. It and we need to look after
their natural, environment especially when it's so. Busy so, yeah
just do a diy dex clean. Up if you don't
(01:25:44):
want to get to an organized, one just take a
rubbish bag and when you're out there next just you,
know allocate thirty, minutes even even ten. Minutes anything is
better than.
Speaker 4 (01:25:56):
Nothing and if you're in summer barbecues over the next few, Weeks,
kate what are you going to be.
Speaker 17 (01:26:00):
Doing i'm going to be starting polite and positive conversation about.
Sustainability SO i, think you, know THERE'S i think sometimes
at These christmas, events you, know conversation status that helpful
with your family. Members you may not talk too so.
Often So i'm just throwing a. Conversation start out to
(01:26:23):
everyone who's, listening to talk about you, know one sustainable
thing that you've done this, year or you know a
random sustainable thing you Heard jack And kate talk about on.
Air just start the conversation and see where it. Goes
that's how culture, changes you, know to be more sustainable and,
aware we need to keep talking about.
Speaker 4 (01:26:41):
It good on, you, Kay, hey thank you so much
for everything this. Year have a wonderful, summer won't you,
yeah you, too and yeah really look forward to talking
again really. Soon Kate. Haule you can find her on
the social media platforms by searching Ethically. Kate all of
her tips for a more sustainable summer will be up
on the news talks he'd be. Websites And i've got
to say that point around the beach clean apps is
(01:27:02):
so so. Accurate SO i MENTIONED i went my first
proper ocean swim of twenty twenty five the other. Day
we just popped it over to tuckupin a, beach and
WHILE i was in the, water my wife just went
up and down the, beach, honestly only over a stretch
probably of about fifty meters of, sand and she was
(01:27:22):
going back and forth for about ten minutes or fifteen
minutes as the water was lapping. In so here's what she,
found and she collected it. All five pairs of, sunglasses
two pairs of, goggles AN, id a hop, card plastic disposable,
vape a set of, headphones a, shoe and a small plastic.
(01:27:47):
Doll that's. Crazy she found THAT i reckon, honestly in
about fifteen or twenty minutes and she collected them. All
and you know lifted them above the high tide line and.
Stuff but, yeah just unbelievable how much trash there was
even in you, know what is a pretty pretty beautiful,
beach you, know and not a beach that we necessarily
think of as being massively. Polluted but not so if
(01:28:09):
you do have, time even when you're at the, BEACH
i reckon doesn't even need to be a big formal cleanup.
Thing if you go for a bit of a swim
and you're just warming up afterwards walking along the, beach
you're actually doing a bit of a cleanup as you
go and as you warm up under the sun's. RAYS
i think makes so much, sense. Right a couple of,
minutes our travel correspondent is taking us To Dairy Slash
London dairy seventeen past. Eleven you with jacktaim On NEWSTALK Zb.
Speaker 1 (01:28:33):
Travel With Windy Woo.
Speaker 5 (01:28:34):
Tours where the world.
Speaker 12 (01:28:35):
Is yours for?
Speaker 4 (01:28:36):
Now My yardley's our travel Corresponding good, Morning good.
Speaker 8 (01:28:41):
Morning, Jack thank you so much for the splendid. Card
by the, way Did Erica stanford have anything to do
in its? Construction?
Speaker 2 (01:28:49):
Ah?
Speaker 4 (01:28:50):
No why why do you?
Speaker 8 (01:28:51):
Ask, Well i've been wondering BECAUSE i know you best
yourself up about your appalling handwriting. Standards, yeah BUT i
think there's been a dramatic increase in your. Standards. Jack
i've actually Done i've done a lie by line audit
of your. CARD i have run the ruler over your
card this, morning AND, i without a word OF i
(01:29:14):
can assure you that every single line could not be.
Straighter oh that's.
Speaker 4 (01:29:19):
Good that's. Good i'm pleased that the lines are. Straight
but as for the actual outlines of the, letters it's
a bit different.
Speaker 8 (01:29:27):
Story, YEAH i think it AS i think it is
top of the.
Speaker 5 (01:29:30):
CLASS i really.
Speaker 8 (01:29:31):
DO i could not fault.
Speaker 4 (01:29:33):
It, Okay, LOOK i will. GLADLY i will gladly accept that,
praise but knowing that deep, down IF i can't read
my own, handwriting THEN i it's fear fear that very
few others are going to be able. To But i'm
pleased that you could on this, occasion and given how
much you Love, Christmas, MIKE i always ensure. THIS i,
try and you, know do my very best to slowly
(01:29:55):
spell things out and make it as legible as. Possible,
hey we're focusing on dairy Slash London derry this. Morning
is that dual name status for The irish border town
is that widely, embraced.
Speaker 8 (01:30:11):
Well as the Character Aaron says And Dairy Girls, JACK
i come from a place Called dairy Or London, dairy
depending on your. Persuasion and it was interesting, actually AS
i drove towards the city about six weeks, AGO i
noticed most highway signs have had The londondery name scratched
out or painted, over and even WHILE i was in,
(01:30:33):
town most LOCALS i spoke to resolutely called the city Simply.
Dairy but either, way it's a legendary.
Speaker 4 (01:30:42):
Place, yes, yes a Legend London dairy. Place so what
has what has made it such a such a booming visitor.
Speaker 8 (01:30:53):
Destination, yeah it's certainly having a, moment AND i think
it's partly fueled by popular culture LIKE tv Shows The Dairy.
Girls but then of course it's history's long, shadow just
so much potent. History in a city that is about
the size Of New. Plymouth it is slashed by this enormous,
(01:31:13):
river The River, foil and one of the great symbols
of reconciliation in the city is THE eu Funded Peace
bridge across The. Foil it's this really, striking s shaped pedestrian,
bridge and it very much bonds both sides of the city.
Together and WHAT i love about it is it actually
spills out Into Ebrington, square which is now this, magnificent
(01:31:38):
magnificent public. Space it was formerly a formidable. Place it
was The British army, barracks but it's all been repurposed
for public. Use and, yeah it's just a very tangible
sign of.
Speaker 4 (01:31:50):
Progress, yeah oh, nice it's, Yeah i'd like you, say
there's so much kind of incredible history there and it's
one Of europe's most impressive walled, cities right.
Speaker 8 (01:32:01):
Totally, YEAH a huge draw is to walk those walls
that lessu the old. City they were built by The
british after they send the locals packing back in the sixteen,
hundreds and then The brits flooded the area With protestant
settlers and then built this formidable wall around the old.
Town the. Cannons that's what really struck, Me, jack WHEN
i was walking around the. Walls the cannons still stand
(01:32:24):
sentinel on those, walls Including Roaring, meg which was the
pride Of, britain renowned for the fury of its firing
And Roaring meg was the canon that was very much
instrumental in repelling all attempts By Irish catholics to lay
siege to the walled. City so, yeah you can see
(01:32:45):
all of these nuggets of history around that walled.
Speaker 4 (01:32:48):
Walk did the first catwalk originating dairy.
Speaker 8 (01:32:53):
Well Amazing. JACK i took a walk around the walls
with the most commanding, Guide martin. McCrossin so he's been
slinging dairy stories with the world from these walls for.
Decades but, yeah he was such such the most consummate
storyteller and beyond all the talk of the, battles he
(01:33:14):
just prized open so many curious nuggets for, me including
this catwalk. Story so there is this big sweep of
the walls that they call The Grand. Parade so go
back to like The victorian era and you can imagine
that The Grand parade was the place where you came
to be. Seen and according To, martin the story goes
(01:33:36):
that there was this visiting newspaper writer From london and
he noted that people walked like cats on this part
of the, walls dressed in their finest garb as they paraded.
Themselves and that claim is that that is how the
term catwalk was. Coined so funnily, enough WHEN i was
(01:33:57):
there six weeks, ago you had a whod of young
selfie seekers on The Grand, parade, posing pouting and flauncing,
themselves probably more flesh than in The victorian. Era BUT i,
thought you, know not a lot's actually changed on those.
Walls it's still the.
Speaker 4 (01:34:12):
Catwalk that's, great what a great little. Story one of
those things is never entirely possible to prove as, well that's. True,
yes how absolving is the is the Bog side.
Speaker 8 (01:34:23):
Neighborhood ah so, Sobering, JACK i was thinking in bed this.
Morning Sarah jevo was probably the most affect in CITY
i visited last. Year Bog side And DAIRY i think
would get that gong this. Year bogside was the tinder
box of the, troubles most notably the Bloody sunday in. Massacre,
(01:34:44):
yes AND i went to that, site that site of
so much, outrage and that when you stand there and
you read the stories of who was mowed down by The,
british it just it just leaves you. Cold and then
strolling through This catholic, neighborhood it's the enormous political murals
(01:35:06):
that just span the side of tenement blocks from tip to,
toe you, know maybe five six stories. High, yeah they
are just so. Transfixing they like wounds that will not stop.
Weeping so as much as there is definitely a sense of,
peace prosperity And, dairy what can't be denied is that
(01:35:28):
so many locals still staunchly Oppose british rule in these,
parts even though both sides agree that an eye for
an eye leaves everyone. Blind, yeah it really leaves you
thinking for quite some time after a.
Speaker 4 (01:35:42):
Visit, yeah and you were there For, halloween, Right so
how wild was?
Speaker 8 (01:35:46):
That, well it was quite a head clearer after the bog. Side,
YES i never appreciate Why Dairy londondery is regarded as
one of the world's Greatest halloween. Destinations it just absolutely
bursts into life and after, life deep into the. Night and,
yes it's all because of the Ancient celtic festival Of,
(01:36:09):
sellwyn which was held On october thirty. One that was
the last night of The celtic. Calendar so The celts
believed that on that day that's when the worlds of
the living and the dead were at their closest and
the spirits could move between, them and they would wear
disguises back in the day the Ancient, celts which of
course has very much similarities To halloween. Costumes so fast
(01:36:32):
forward today And dairy stages the most fantastical. Parade the
whole city seems to be consumed in a sea of
the most staggering. Costumes AND i just could not believe
the lengths people would go to to get dressed up
and made. Up it was like it was like A hollywood. Blockbuster,
yeah you, know it's like a bigger bash Than. Christmas
(01:36:55):
it's the big Show, halloween AND i reckon they'd give
The Mexicans day of The dead to run for their money.
Speaker 4 (01:37:00):
Jackets it's funny because you don't you obviously think Of
halloween as Being. American, yeah you, know and then it's
just huge And. Derry yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah very. Good
it sounds like a great. Place i'm really. ENVIOUS i
would love to go, there would love to go. There,
Yeah you've only whet my appetite more this. Morning thank
you so, Much. Mike we will catch you again Next saturday.
(01:37:23):
Morning and for all Of mike's tips on tripping Through
Dairy London, derry you can go To News, TALKS heb
dot co dot M z before, midday our music reviewer
with the worst things for music fans in twenty twenty.
Five we've got your book picks for this week as,
well but next. Up Jason pine is here counting down
To Weekend sport this, afternoon.
Speaker 5 (01:37:45):
Getting your weekends.
Speaker 1 (01:37:46):
Started It's saturday morning With Jack team On News TALKS
edbis in.
Speaker 8 (01:38:02):
The Grieb Months News TALK.
Speaker 4 (01:38:04):
V you're probably wondering what that's. All that's. Okay we
are playing you a bit Of Snoop dogg for good
reason this. Morning because after his stellar presence for THE
us at The Summer olympics In, paris last Year's Snoop
dogg has been named an honorary coach For TEAM usa
at next Year's Winter. Olympics So snoop was a special
correspondent FOR nbc In. Paris he performed at the handover
(01:38:27):
ceremony FOR la twenty twenty, eight but his honorary role
will be celebrating and supporting The american athletes off the
field of play next Year's Football World. Cup, Right Jason
pine is taking us through the afternoon With Weekends sport
and pineyer we should have had test cricket at the
basin this. Afternoon but The Black, caps despite their injury,
(01:38:49):
woes wrapped things up in three days they.
Speaker 10 (01:38:51):
Did, Indeed jacket's a beautiful day here in The. Capitol
today would have been a nice day for lazing and
lounging on the bank at the. Basin but, yeah, LOOK
i did not expect This test to be over in three.
Days WHEN i saw The West indies in Christ church
show such incredible resilience backbone to you, know to fend
off and albeit a depleted bowling attack on that last,
(01:39:11):
DAY i, thought, right This West indies team's got a
bit about. Them they can dig, in they can you,
know they can make you, know make, us you, know
perhaps reconsider our diffidence towards them as far As test
matches are. Concerned but, no not at. All in the
second innings In wellington they only batted for forty seven
overs against again a depleted. Attack Blair tickner was the
(01:39:32):
most experienced seamer in the side with Four, tests and
of course he was ruled out with that shoulder injury
in the first, inning so to be able to only
bat for forty seven overs against a very Inexperienced test
bowling ATTACK i think was quite disappointing.
Speaker 4 (01:39:46):
By The West.
Speaker 10 (01:39:46):
Indies flip it, though and we're starting to build a
bit of, depth aren't we in our seam bowling. Ranks
you look at the likes Of Jacob, duffy who you,
know hadn't played A test match, before you, know the
middle of this, year which seen him of the white ball,
stuff but you know he's quickly become a pretty decent
red ball. Bowler Michael ray on, debut charging in and
picking up six, Wickets Zach folks check me. In Even
(01:40:07):
Blair tickner in the first, innings who was our best,
bowler you, know having only played.
Speaker 4 (01:40:11):
Seven test matches. PREVIOUSLY i think we're starting to build some.
Depth you.
Speaker 10 (01:40:15):
Know we we get a bit misty eyed about the
sow the Bolt wagoner, days don't, we and how how
great they, were and they, were but it was always going,
to you, know, Move we're always going to move on from,
that and NOW i think we're building a reasonably decent
list Of i've seen bowling options across all of our.
Speaker 4 (01:40:31):
Formats, YEAH i totally. AGREE i mean every cloud right it,
was you, know and when we saw that injury the other,
DAY i, thought, Oh this is going to be a
very very tricky second, innings BUT i think things obviously
turned out okay for them and then which is very.
Pleasing so you're going to be looking at that this.
Speaker 10 (01:40:47):
Afternoon, yeah looking forward to chatting actually To Gavin, larson
who's back for a second instance as, selector and so
he's the one who has to go into plunket. SHIELD i,
mean how did they land On Michael ray for? Example you,
know a guy who's been in and around the domestic
scene for over a. Decade how did they land on
him as the guy to bring up rather than maybe
another young player or. Whatever so and you, know and
the other interesting one around the Black caps at the, Moment,
(01:41:10):
jack is what we do around the wicket keeper batsman.
Position Tom blundell pulling a hammy in Christ, Church Mitch
hay comes, in keeps, well scores sixty on. Debut what
do they do When Tom blundle's, fit which by the
sounds of, it he will be for the Third?
Speaker 4 (01:41:24):
Test how do they make that?
Speaker 10 (01:41:25):
Decision do they go back to what they had before
because it was an injury rather than being, dropped or
do they Reward Mitch hay for a pretty decent day
boo and give him another go In Mount. Monganuit SO
i guess we'll find that. Out so those are other
questions For Gavin larsen after, midday and then Sever reese
is with you this. Afternoon, yeah looking forward to chatty
to Sever. Reese he's made a decision to head off
share AND i think a lot of people expected. This
(01:41:46):
he was kind of on the fringes of The All
black side this year but has decided to go and
play In france for the next Three he'll play one
More SUPER rugb season with The, crusaders and at the
end of those three years as, Well jack he'll be
eligible to play FOR, figi which of course is where
he was born and grew. Up SO i think it
might be the end of end of the line for
Sever reese as An All, black but it might not
be the end of the line of him as an
(01:42:06):
international rugby plass here looking forward to chatting to Several
reefs about his career after.
Speaker 4 (01:42:10):
One it's, amazing isn't it how this is often the
case for. WINGERS i, mean he is as a rugby,
player you, know at his explosive. Best my, gosh he
was an incredibly impressed rugby, boss and he, was you,
know the kind of toast of the town until maybe
a season. Ago when things that start to, slip especially for,
wingers it feels like they're sort of you, know they're
(01:42:31):
right there and thereabouts one minute and but as soon
as you, know someone slightly faster or fresh company comes
in and that's. It they see their opportunities.
Speaker 10 (01:42:40):
Slip always the hot, hand it's the hot. Hand Severy
reese was exactly that in twenty. Nineteen he came in
as the hot hand With George. Bridge, look it's impossible
to predict our starting wingers for the twenty twenty Seven
Rugby World. Cup we're two years. Away it'll probably excuse.
Me one of them will probably not have played for
The All blacks BEFORE i could, say, so, yeah we'll,
see but, Yeah i'm looking forward to chating with it
(01:43:00):
after one.
Speaker 4 (01:43:00):
Nice, well looking forward to, it thanks. Sir Book this,
Afternoon Jason pye in For Weekend sport right after the Midy.
News next, up we've got your book picks for the,
week Including quantum Of MENACE q is out of six
and then over his Head DA da will give you
the details on that in a couple of.
Speaker 1 (01:43:16):
Minutes Saturday morning With Jack Team Full show podcast On
iHeartRadio powered By News TALKS edb.
Speaker 4 (01:43:25):
Twenty one to twelve On News TALKS, edb it's time
to get your book picks for the. Weekend Katherine rains
is our book, reviewer so we're going to track it
down in a couple of. Minutes he's got a good
couple of options for anyone who's looking for a bit
of fiction over the. SUMMER i don't know about, you
but as someone who is forever reading, nonfiction it's the
one time of year When i'm able to disconnect and
(01:43:47):
actually enjoy a bit of fiction as. Well and So
katherine's first book Is quantum Of menace By Vassin. Kahan
goe To catherine tell us about it.
Speaker 18 (01:43:55):
Morning so this is a different look at the world
Of James, bond and it explores that world From q's.
Perspective and so you meet him in his time and
six is up and he's been thrown out of his
role in favor of a NEW.
Speaker 4 (01:44:10):
Q when this new m.
Speaker 18 (01:44:12):
Takes, charge and he's really at a loss what to,
do and he receives the very sad news that his
childhood Friend Pete, napier who's this cutting edge computer science
and you, know well deep in that world has has,
died and just before his, Death peter had written to
him suggesting that his life might be in. Danger and
then the coroner's report comes out and the police are
(01:44:33):
in investigation and agreement that it was death by, misadventure
That q's not. Convinced and then another letter arrives and
he begins his own, investigation and after having spent his
entire career in The James bond world hidden in a,
lab he takes to the field to try and work
out what happened to his, friend and he ends up
back in his childhood village Of wickstone On, water has
(01:44:54):
to confront a lot of ghost of the, past and
you find a lot out about him as. Well and
the more he, investigates the more evident it becomes that
someone is onto him and wants to stop. Him and
so you get lots of One Crime fair and modern
war and crime and life thanks to the stories with
the crime families and quantum, computing and Although James bond
isn't the hero of the, story there's lots of flashbacks
to the interactions WITH q and lots of the other
(01:45:15):
characters that people will be familiar, with and the story
is really. Good it keeps you guessing and if you're
A bond, fan this is a perfect mystery for. You
AND i think That bond fans will really enjoy this.
Speaker 4 (01:45:25):
Book superb okay. Cool so That's quantum Of menace By
us And. Kahn next, Up The hawk Is dead By Peter.
Speaker 18 (01:45:33):
James so this series features a detective and superintendent Are Roy,
Grace and this one can be read as a real standalone,
Novel and it starts when you're on, board when The
queen's actually on board The royal train heading For, sussex
and there's a drailment in the tunnel and everybody's forced
to hop off the train and walk back through the,
(01:45:53):
tunnel and there's a train about to, arrive so there's
lots of pressure and people to really get to move
on and get out of the. Way and then chaos
ensues as one of her aides is shot dead by
what appears to be a sniper and railment looks like
it's the work of. Protesters as the story moves, on
and it looks like The queen's just survived an assassination,
attempt and the police have their, answer but Actually roy
(01:46:16):
has a very different, opinion and he thinks The queen
wasn't the intended target and actually they may have got
who they intended to, be and so he ends up
on the palace and you, know the wealth and the
meeting The king and The queen and all of the
kind of things that go on at the palace and the,
issues and there's police politics and the politics of the royal.
Household and it's a really unpredictable book and hard to
(01:46:38):
guess where it's actually, going and it's quite twisting and,
intense and there's lots of secrets and surprises and political
intrigue and it's a good read with an interesting kind
of real life characters thrown in there in the mix as.
Speaker 4 (01:46:50):
Well yeah, right, okay. Cool That's The Hawk Is dead
By Peter. James catherine's first Book quantum Of menace By Vasim,
Kahn and we'll make sure both of those are on the.
Website Thanks, CATHERINE i have a Great, saturday and we
will catch you again for our Final Saturday morning together
of twenty twenty five next. Week can in a couple of,
minutes our music reviewer with the worst things about being
(01:47:11):
a music fan this year seventeen to twelve On News,
talks he'd.
Speaker 3 (01:47:14):
Be giving you the inside scope on The all You
need To know This saturday morning With Jack Dame Youth.
Speaker 5 (01:47:21):
Talks it'd be.
Speaker 8 (01:47:24):
Scored a.
Speaker 4 (01:47:24):
Twelve, well that Is shanghai By King gizzard and The Lizard.
(01:47:53):
Wizard that's the real version of the. Song and there
is a good reason we are playing that slightly peculiar
sounding music for you this. Morning Chris, shultz our music,
reviewer is here with the. Details And King gizzard and
The Lizard wizard were subject to some craziness INVOLVING ai
and streaming services this. Year, chris they really.
Speaker 16 (01:48:14):
Were.
Speaker 19 (01:48:15):
Yeah so this is An australian kind of psych rock.
Band they've they've made a lot of albums and a
lot of different. Genres, yeah and.
Speaker 4 (01:48:24):
Before they are very they're very unusual but quite cool Late,
yeah and a really.
Speaker 19 (01:48:29):
Cool live experience. Too they've they've Toured New zealand and
they toured the world that. That, yeah they've made a
lot of. Music though they're known for releasing four or
five albums a, year all of that until recently was
all On. Spotify and then they joined this kind of
mass exodus if you. Like you, know these artists who
have pulled off their music because they're unhappy with the
(01:48:49):
way the streaming service is being. Run massive attack have
done it, locally The bats And tikitane have done that.
Too and then what happened was is that some some
someone with a big idea went out there and ASKED
ai to recreate their, music uploaded that and that made
it to some of the, playlists the, bigger more popular
(01:49:11):
playlist On. Spotify and so that's one of the weird
things that have happened or that we've had to navigate
as music fans this. YEAR i think this is the
first year that we've had to sort of, say you,
know we've had to ask a, question is this music
made by humans or is it made by?
Speaker 2 (01:49:29):
Robots?
Speaker 19 (01:49:30):
Yeah, sometimes you, know that line's beginning to. Blur we've
seen The grammys struggling with. It they are trying to
work out the. Rules do we allow artists who admit
they're USING ai to enter their songs and give them. Awards,
yeah it's a murky it's a murky.
Speaker 4 (01:49:49):
World, yeah it really. Is it really. Is, SO i
mean that's a prime example of one of the worst
things about being a music fan in twenty twenty, five
especially if you're A King gizzard. Fan so you went On,
spotify you were handed something, else but they came up
with a different, name, right Like King lizard and The
Wizard gizzard or. Something this is, slightly slightly it's a slight, variation, right,
(01:50:11):
yeah slight.
Speaker 8 (01:50:12):
Variation yeah.
Speaker 19 (01:50:13):
Yeah so, look this is leading to this trend right
where Where spotify is just just getting a bit. Weird
it does feel like this year things are beginning to
turn a.
Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
Bit you.
Speaker 19 (01:50:24):
Know i've spoken to a lot of my friends and
family who have left the platform because they're not okay with.
That but they're also not okay with things like iesads
but hitting their streaming. Feeds they're not okay with the
kind of constant price. Raises and of, course the co, Founder,
danuek was found to have invested some of his proceeds
(01:50:45):
Of spotify Into, wartech which it seems to have been
the big. One that seems to be why a lot
of the artists are pulling In. Spotify SO i do
wonder if we're heading next year into a bit of
a world where where things sort of turn Where spotify
just just gets to the point where people don't kind
of want to use. It if your favorite music's not on,
there then why would you subscribe to. It if you're
(01:51:05):
a mess with tag fan and you can't listen to,
it why would you pay for?
Speaker 8 (01:51:09):
That?
Speaker 4 (01:51:09):
Yeah, yeah, Right let's walk through the other little points
you've raised on the worst things about being a music
fan in twenty twenty, five and rising concert ticket prices
is right up.
Speaker 19 (01:51:19):
There, well when you couple that too with the fact
that a lot of our the, biggest the world's biggest
acts aren't coming To New zealand, anymore that touring exclusively To,
australia then, yes those those concert ticket prices are up.
There i've paid up to three hundred and fifty dollars
for a concert ticket this Year. Pips when you add
in flights and accommodation and everything else that's traveling To australia,
(01:51:41):
entails then those costs really do get up. THERE i
just got back On wednesday from going to See Kendrick
lamar And Lady gaga and the plane was full Of
New zealanders had been. Over we were all talking about.
It someone had been To Lady. Gaga someone had been
to The Spilt Milk festival and was wearing the. Hoodie
they sat next to me and we were talking about.
That we're having to eat that at the. Moment and
(01:52:03):
there are changes on the way the governments and v
and introduced this major events boost to try and tast
those artist. Back that's going to take a bit of.
Time so that is something we've just had to wear.
Speaker 4 (01:52:15):
Unfortunately, okay, YEAH i mean we've talked about this. Before
hopefully we're about to see a bit of progress on that,
front but it's certainly been a big punish for a
lot Of New zealand music fans have had to spend
so much money if they want to go and see
some of their favorite acts on these big world. Tours
what is the worst view obstruction in your, View, chris
given you've been given a hard time for being. Tall
(01:52:37):
is it tall people or is it a sea of smart? Phones? Oh,
no it's the.
Speaker 19 (01:52:42):
Phones it's definitely the phones for, me because those you,
know when you add your arms up there, there you're
getting up above seven, foot so you, Know i'm six foot.
Four if someone's holding up a phone and that's sort
of just under six. Foot that's right on my, siteline
JACK i Perc the phones drive me. Crazy so that's
WHY i really loved a recent show actually At Spark,
(01:53:02):
Arena tool played and they banned all the. Phones they
threatened to throw people, out and no one used. Them
everyone stuck to these rules and it created this really
magic atmosphere WHICH i hadn't experienced probably since back in
like twenty ten before everyone had a smartphone in their
pocket and were filming all the.
Speaker 8 (01:53:18):
Shows is that?
Speaker 4 (01:53:19):
Right, yeah they just said don't do, it and people
didn't do.
Speaker 19 (01:53:22):
It they were pretty threatening about. It they did bring
a voice over over the loudspeaker, beforehand and they did
say explicitly you will be instantly. Expelled they didn't do
that the first, night and they didn't do it at
the festival THAT i saw them play In australia. Either
it was specifically that show, interesting and they did have
this rule where you could bring them out for the
last song and film and take. Photos Then i'd love
(01:53:45):
to see more artists do that in twenty SIX i
think that's. Great Like, plan you're just straddling that. Line
you're giving people the best of both.
Speaker 4 (01:53:53):
Works So i've been to two. THINGS i. THINK i
went to A Childish gambino show, once AND i went
to A Dave chappelle show at The comedian in which
they when you came, in you had to put your
phone in a little bag and they took it away,
basically you, know and, no you were sealed. Up you
held onto, it but you couldn't get it out until the,
end you. Know AND i loved. IT i was all about, It,
like surely the reason you go to live to experience
(01:54:15):
live music is to be present in the. Moment and
yet and, yet the moment the artist comes, out everyone
pulls out the. Phone it's, like, guys that's the whole
reason we're, here like to get away from Those, okay
hey give us Your we're not going to play it
BECAUSE i think it's got too many swear words according
To Libby libby the. Prob but what's your what's your
worst song of twenty twenty? Five just to round out
(01:54:36):
your worst of?
Speaker 19 (01:54:37):
List go and if you have to go and listen to,
it go and listen to The willsmith song. Girls it
is just the shambles Of, OH i don't even know
what it.
Speaker 4 (01:54:46):
Is, Terrible it is. Terrible, yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, yeah
go and hate listen to that. One we're not going
to play. That we'll pick something that's maybe slightly less
controversial this. Morning but thank you so Much. Chris Chris.
Schultz you can find him on his. Substack of, course
it's called Boiler room seven to twelve on. Newsbooks he'd be.
