Speaker 4 (01:58):
Know building, Yes, it's not my studios. Just be careful
with the condiments and the hot dogs and everything. Well,
our best, Yeah, don't throw them at Torres for his
take on US soccer.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Are you just are you mad at US soccer fans?
Speaker 7 (02:13):
Only?
Speaker 5 (02:14):
Are you fed up with US soccer? Aaron Torres?
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Because we're still a couple of days removed, and we
shouldn't be getting ready for the United States and their
quarterfinal match in Copa America, but instead we're talking about
what may happen in two years at the world public?
Speaker 5 (02:28):
Who are you all mad at when it comes to
the United States men's national team?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
I know it's like eighty five, it's sonny, we're celebrating America.
Why am I so mad today? Dan Byerb so listen.
I have watched, you know, from a distance, the reaction
to the loss to Uruguay a few nights ago, and
it was obviously a disappointing effort in Copa America from
team USA, US National Team, etc. Why I bring it
(02:55):
up is because the scorching hot takes on Greg Burholter out.
Speaker 1 (03:02):
He's the worst. He's gotta go.
Speaker 8 (03:05):
USA soccer will never reach its potential with him in
charge of the program.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Now, what I'll just say, very quickly says I'm not
a soccer expert, Okay, I'm not a tactical I can't
sit there and say if he had done this or
if he had done that, we would have beaten Uruguay
and we would be whatever. But what I can also
tell you is the complaints that I have heard about
Greg Burholter and his inability to get Team USA Soccer
(03:34):
to the top of the sport or anywhere close. You
know who have also heard that complaint about Dan Byer that.
Speaker 8 (03:43):
Every Team USA Soccer coach since I've been born, Okay,
it's like the New York Jets, It's like Auburn football.
Speaker 1 (03:54):
At some point, it can't you know, if you get.
Speaker 8 (03:58):
Divorced seven times, it's not always the guy or girls' fault.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Just look yourself in the mirror.
Speaker 8 (04:04):
It can't be the coach's fault every single time for
the past forty years, Dan Byer, it can't be.
Speaker 4 (04:10):
I know, we both expect a lot, from a lot
more from the corn Huskers. I even saw you put
something on social media. I think Matt Rule is gonna
turn that thing around. I would put that as Nebraska
or like, no matter who you put in there, it
just for some reason is just not working out.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
But what the only thing I'd say about Nebraska is
I think their fans are almost resigned to, Man, this
is just never gonna happen. We stink, and they're gonna try,
and they're gonna show up and they're gonna sell out
every game. But to me, it's more like the SEC
team that doesn't understand that they're ninth in the pecking order.
(04:47):
And yeah, maybe every once in a while it's gonna
work out and you make a run and the right
things happen on the right day, but you're still ultimately
ninth in the pecking order. And with Team USA, I
just look at it and Dan again, like, I just
think that by the way, I think it's in a
larger picture. I think it says something about like Americans
(05:09):
in general, and and I don't blame anybody for striving
to be better. I know, I'm I gotta be careful here,
any of yea, yeah, yeah, I mean we're only on
like six hundred affiliates across the country, so I can't
I can't make too many people angry. But it's like,
I just think we have the privilege of watching the
best basketball players in the world, uh, you know, here
(05:30):
in our domestic league. In the NBA, the best hockey
players in the world, even if they're not from the
US here, So we're so used to seeing everything at
the highest level, and Team USA Soccer just isn't that.
It's never been that my entire life, and I just
don't get it's like groundhog Day, like everybody expects a
(05:53):
different result, even though this is who we've been historically.
Like I said, since I started watching t USA soccer
in the ninety four World Cup thirty years ago.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
I would agree with the majority of that statement. And today,
by the way, the thirty year anniversary of the US
playing Brazil in the knockout stage in the round of
sixteen here in the United.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
States, I guarantee if people were demanding the coach get
fired after that one too, so nomin.
Speaker 4 (06:20):
Bruce Arena stuck around for a little while longer. But
the reason why I actually said Nebraska is because of
Scott Frost and how it seemed like the perfect higher
age and Jurgen Klinsman for so long was sought to
be the American head coach, and then when he became
the head coach, we still weren't satisfied and ended up
making a change in how it all bottomed out, So
(06:41):
that's where the parallel that I sought from. I do
think that there is a difference between sports leagues and
your national team.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Like we.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
Have a majority of the teams in the NHL in hockey,
which is the highest level of hockey, but the best
countries playing hockey right now Canada. Canada would be the best.
I don't know if we're number one. That's kind of
what you're saying. We watch top level NBA action, we
watch top level football action, we see the best in baseball.
Come over here, we're watching the best in baseball. That's
(07:14):
kind of your point, right, that we're so accustomed to
watching the best that maybe if our US soccer team
isn't the best, that we should just kind of take
it for what it is, and instead we're mad because
we feel like we're watching the best.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
Is that a way to summarize what you're saying?
Speaker 3 (07:29):
That part I didn't do a good job selling. I
do think it is interesting to me because the MLS
is really the only major league that I can think
of in this country. And please, by all means correct
me if I'm wrong that we have nothing resembling the
best players in the world. I know there's a messy
(07:49):
MESSI is a standalone player, but the quality, but we
treat it like it's a major league sport when in essence,
like it's basically a Double A league. It would be
like if we cover the uh Arizona Fall League like
it was the Major League Baseball and it just isn't.
And so I don't know if that's tricking our brain
(08:10):
because we we go, we have ninety.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
Thousand people show up for some of these MLS games.
Speaker 3 (08:15):
There's probably be ninety thousand people at the Rose Bowl
tonight for Galaxy FC. And because I don't know how
to fully articulate what I'm saying, but I do think
it's just the weird sport where like I don't know,
like like I don't understand why team like this isn't
even necessarily like a pro Greg Berholter, because I'm not
(08:37):
a tactical genius enough to know. But what I just
do know is this is the only thing that I
can think of in sports where I just don't think
Americans as a fan base or at least the vocal
whatever percentage, if you wanna call it majority of minority, whatever,
just I just think they're out of line with expectations.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
I guess that's what I'm trying to saying.
Speaker 3 (09:00):
I'm maybe talking about NHL and NBA is the wrong
analogy when talking about a national team.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
To your point, I think that there's because I do
disagree with you on the overall point that I think
that there should be expectations.
Speaker 5 (09:12):
And the reason there's a reason why I think that
there are.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Expectations, and that is the number that's next to the
United States when you look at them in the world ranking.
When you look at them and where they are ranked
amongst other countries, they are ranked twelve and maybe aaron
this is when we look at the top twenty five
in college football, since we were going that route, You're like,
no way that team is twelve, Like, no way that
that team is better than this team at eighteen and ninety.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
What you're saying is this is the equivalent of EA
Sports put in Colorado at sixteen.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
This shits, And.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
You know teams that are three and three and some
team is five and zero and six and one and
didn't play anyone and you're like, there's no way that
they should be twelve and that team should be nineteenth.
I think that I can understand that, and I can
appreciate that, but if we got to twelve, can't we
just at LEAs least one at one point beat someone
in the top ten, like is it Mexico, or at
(10:07):
some point beat a top fifteen team, like going into
that match on Monday and when the draw was made.
People don't realize this, but like the US kind of
was the They weren't the highest seeded team in their group.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Uruguay was.
Speaker 4 (10:21):
But in terms of like how they got placed in
their group because of what they accomplished and what they won,
they were put as one of the top teams. But
it's not like they're Uruguay, there's Uruguay. There's this huge,
huge gap between the two. And I think that's where
the frustration resides. Is there has been growth over the
last fifty years, but over the last twenty years when
(10:44):
they made it to the round of the quarterfinals of
the World Cup that was in two thousand and two,
there hasn't been anything past that, And why are we
getting to this point? And so while I'm disagreeing with
you in all of this, I would also think that
what you're saying is when you're I wanted to almost
put it like in a way of dating where where
(11:05):
someone is just you know, they they think that they're
a ten. Okay, sure, and so they're only going after
tens and maybe you don't, you know, maybe you don't
look that way. Maybe you gotta maybe you gotta broaden
your horizons. It is such a shallow like just me
saying it made me made me squirm in my seat
because I don't want to think about that.
Speaker 5 (11:27):
But it was the only way. I don't want to
think like that.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
It was the only way though, that I think I
can sit there and say, hey, buddy, you may want
to lower the expectations a little bit, you know, you
may want to try to get to get to know
someone and not have all of these all of these
things on your list that you must have for someone.
Maybe that's the better way to put it that at
some point you kind of maybe have to lower your expectations.
(11:50):
If you're saying that for US soccer, maybe that's a solution.
But it's difficult when these numbers are telling you that
you're a top fifteen club in the team in this
world and you, for some reason just can't beat anybody
that is about the same level of.
Speaker 1 (12:04):
You or higher than you, and that's what's frustrating. Yeah,
it makes total sense.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
And you know, maybe I'm being a little bit unfair,
and listen, I get it, like and I don't think
like I don't think that, Like I said, I don't
think you should lower expectations. And I give credit to
everybody that shows up to the bars, that buys the kids,
that where's the jerseys whatever.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
I just you know, I almost wonder, Dan, is it, like.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Do you think it's because like, like so there's no
track like there's no historic track record that Team USA
should be performing significantly better than they are right now.
Like it's just like you said, I always I'll go
back to the college football example. I remember, and this
is kind of a sad situation, but like I remember
when Mike Leach got hired at Mississippi State and everyone's like, well, why,
(12:54):
you know, why would you take that? And it's like
they've all Mississippi State's always going to be basically a
seven and five program. It's like, but at least you
have a fun coach that's gonna keep you entertained, you know,
And so like nobody had any visions and nobody has
any visions at Mississippi State of with the right hire,
we're gonna beat Alabama and Georgian and whatever, and so
to bring it back to Team USA. I just I
(13:15):
don't know if it's because people put so much into
it and get so little out of it. Like I'm
trying to figure out why people are I guess it's
maybe because of what you just said, because the world
rankings reflect that we're underperforming in the biggest tournaments. I
just if there's no historic track record of something happening,
I don't understand why people are getting so emotional when
(13:38):
it doesn't happen.
Speaker 5 (13:39):
Does that make yeah, yeah, no, I get it.
Speaker 4 (13:41):
And it's it's it's almost being and using all these analogies,
it's like wanting to be on the other side of
that velvet rope, sure you know, to be to be
let into that club. What is life like in there?
And I think that that's the feeling. And at some
point when you have all these resources and and stuff
that you tried to put in and tried to take
that next level and you can't, it's extremely extremely frustrating.
(14:05):
It's again in those twenty two years since two thousand
and two, and they made it to the quarterfinals. They've
had a bunch of Round of sixteen appearances, including the
last time in twenty twenty two. But you also had
an appearance where you crapped out, you didn't even make it,
you know. And the college football team that you talked
about with Mississippi State, it reminded me of the Glenn
(14:26):
Mason are at Minnesota.
Speaker 1 (14:27):
Sure, you're right, you know, they beat up out everybody.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
They go seven and five, they're going to bowl games,
but you know, they're probably not going to beat the
top team, probably not going to you know, beat the
Michigans or Ohio States of the world. And if they do,
it's going to be a rare occurrence. But that's kind
of what you have. But then when guess what, when
Glen Mason leaves, you know, and maybe Minnesota football wasn't
what it was like, You're like, well, geez, maybe.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
That wasn't that bad at that point. Yep.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
And and so I think there are a lot of
college football scenarios that we can put in comparison to this,
But it could be some of that Shay's hanging out
as our executive producer you wanted in unless Shay.
Speaker 9 (15:05):
Yeah, So I kind of wanted to go back on
the expectations aspect of this because basically, the last time
almost anyone or most average Americans have watched US soccer
was during the FIFA World Cup, and if you remember,
we drew with England, we drew with Wales, we beat Iran,
we lost the Netherlands. But in the end, like those
are really good games for a team that's never really
necessarily made it out of the round sixteen. So it's
(15:28):
it's almost as if like it's it's just it's falling off.
And I don't think this was supposed to happen at all,
Like I was expecting them to get out of their
group one thousand percent. But the issue where this all
stems from, I really do believe, is from the youth aspect.
It's the programs that the MLS is making is not
nowhere near as big as it used to be. It's
(15:48):
they're not putting as much money into it. There's this
school that's near us, it's called the Galaxy School, and
it's basically these kids go there. It's the Galaxies program.
They run it, and it's not at all what it
used to be when I was a kid playing soccer.
It was like the coolest place to go. It was
the coolest place to be. I had one friend that
actually didn't go to our high school and instead went
to Galaxy and he ended up playing in college. But
it's nowhere where it's at anymore. The youth aspect is
(16:11):
completely dead and they're not putting any money into it.
It's like, I don't really see any of these events
going on. But when you see football, you see pro Way,
you see all these different clinics going on, even with baseball,
but with America, it's kind of like nonexistent. So it's
like there is no real incentive to play soccer anymore
in America, and especially if you see our team not
(16:33):
doing too good.
Speaker 1 (16:33):
I mean, after the.
Speaker 9 (16:34):
Feed for World Cup, it should have blown up, and
it didn't because they didn't put the money into the
youth factor. And I think that's a huge issue and
they really need to figure that out if they want
to do anything, or if they even want because people
always say this, athletes don't look at soccer first in America.
They look at football, baseball, any other sport. Like everyone
always says, if Tyreek Hill was playing soccer, we would
(16:57):
be so good I always hear that, so it's like
I really do think they need to start with the youth.
But again, I think there should be high expectations for America.
As always with any sport. It doesn't matter what sport
they're playing. They could be playing cricket, it doesn't matter
we beat Pakistan the other day.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
Like it.
Speaker 9 (17:11):
We should be at the top of almost every athletics.
It really doesn't what historical do what history.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
It's like saying we should be great at hockey, Like
I mean, that's not even a good example. It's like
saying whatever, I'm just trying to think of a middle of.
Speaker 1 (17:26):
The pack darts. Yeah, Like I don't know.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
It's like I'm trying to think of the I can't
think of anything off the top of my head. It's
like saying, oh, Australia should be good at baseball because
they have like two guys in the major leagues. It's like, well,
there's like they're not completely irrelevant, but like what made
you know, like good example, like Olympics are coming up. Germany,
they had Dirk, they had this, they had that they
want a silver medal a million years ago. It's like, no,
(17:53):
I don't I don't want to speak for Germany. I
don't think people in Germany are like this is the
worst thing. I don't know, it's just I it's easy
to say, like we should be better because we're America.
But what historical data point do we have that shows
that we should be better because we're America. And by
the way, this is the exact point that I'm trying
to make, is like I just think Americans can't cope
(18:14):
with the idea of not being the best at something.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
But go ahead, Shack.
Speaker 9 (18:16):
So that's why I brought up the feed for World Cup,
because you know, England great soccers, great soccer team, and
then there's also Wales, great soccer team, and when you
draw with both of them, and Iran is a great
soccer team. Like, don't get me wrong, there's a lot
going on in Iran, but their soccer team is very,
very good. So when you see something like that in
twenty twenty two, and then like the next biggest thing
is cope America. So it's like, come on, what's going
(18:38):
on here? Like this isn't even get sorry.
Speaker 4 (18:40):
Yeah, no is this is actually I'm gonna cut you off, Shack,
because you said it twice and you're absolutely correct, but
I actually think it's the problem. We don't want to
draw with England, we don't want to draw with Wales.
We want to beat those teams, just like we wanted
to beat Uruguay the other night and we couldn't do it.
Like the twenty twenty two World Up was so unsatisfying
(19:03):
because it was two draws in a win and then
you go to the knockout stage and you lose, like
that's what it was like. It was you were just like,
wait a second, here, we scored two goals in the
group stage. You didn't score I believe in the knockout
stage when you lost to the Netherlands it was one,
it was one three, Okay, so they scored one. They
scored three goals in the entire tournament, you know, and
(19:26):
like and as someone who's a casual fan like me,
there was at no point that I thought that they
were dominating. It's almost like smoking mirrors and how do
you get in? Okay, good, we have an easier group.
We're not in the Group of death. That's good. We
have England, who is in as good as maybe you know,
another country. If we can draw them, and then and
and that's the point of it is at some point,
like I was, I didn't care about Copa America, but
(19:49):
all of a sudden it's on, We're talking about it,
and I'm invested. That's what sometimes what happens. We're gonna
get it with the Olympics when you put a flag
on it. I don't want to do it with smoking mirrors.
I want to go in and be like, all right,
let's win some matches. We're apparently the twelfth best team
in the world. Let's go and show them. Let's beat
the eighth best team in the world. Let's move on,
let's win games, let's do something. And it's none of that.
(20:10):
It's absolutely none of that, And I think that's what
is so frustrating. So I'm glad Shay brought up twenty
twenty two because it's a great great like it appears
like there's great success there and what they've done, and
there is, there's accomplishment there. But I think that's the
problem of what is holding us back that because we
aren't as dominant, we had to rely on Bolivia because
(20:34):
of our own misdoings in a previous match to help
them get through to the next stage, and that's that's
frustrating as well.
Speaker 3 (20:41):
Yeah, I just and I think that's a I think
that's a fair enough and I think Shay's bigger point
of yes, we advance, but like you want growth.
Speaker 1 (20:51):
I get that.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
I would just go back and say, like again, I've
said the same thing, so we don't have to stay
on the topic. But like I just I there's nothing
wrong with being high achieving or striving to be high achieving.
I just think whether it was last World Cup, whether
it was whatever, it's kind of reflective of who Team
USA has been.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
Kopa was a little bit disappointing.
Speaker 3 (21:14):
I'm not gonna lie, but again, that's sort of what
Team USA soccer has been. A cup, some some reasonable highs,
some lows and to your point, Dan, no real breakthrough
since two thousand and two.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Yeah, it's I mean, it's you want, you want to
be able to take that next step and move on
and do your thing, and it just you know, it
hasn't hasn't happened, you know, And so correction, Bridge Arena
wasn't that coach in nineteen ninety four.
Speaker 5 (21:41):
Took over later on after that, but he was.
Speaker 4 (21:46):
He was the head coach when they made it to
the to the round of the quarterfinals of the World
Cup in two thousand and two. So correction on that point,
thanks for listening. It's always great to have tall Tall
Daddy in. Haven't heard from it in a while. So
he took in that game thirty years ago at Stanford Stadium.
I remember because my mom was in the Fourth of
July parade that we had in our county back in Wisconsin,
(22:07):
Lincoln County, and she was an elected official, so she
was in the parade, and so we had the sign
that said USA beats Brazil. I feel like I'd say
this every year on the fourth of July, and people
thought we were giving the result like it was a
spotsticker on the front of our car. We were just
rooting on the United States that unfortunately, oh yeah, they're like, oh.
Speaker 5 (22:24):
Uants say beats Brazil. That car just said so no,
we were saying, like go USA.
Speaker 1 (22:29):
But it was fun.
Speaker 4 (22:30):
We were all wrapped up into it in nineteen ninety four,
and that's I think what we want to do again,
at least in two years and hopefully there is some
positive momentum and entering the World Cup when it comes.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
Back to the credit of USA, fans, they remain wrapped
up in it, even if they haven't had the payoffs.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
Said frankly, they probably deserve.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
So maybe it's a combination of me not just being
mad at the fans. But I don't even know who
I'm mad at anymore, because I do actually sort of
give credit to the fans for sticking with the team,
even though to Shay's point, to your point, Dan, they're
really hasn't been significant growth in twenty plus years.
Speaker 4 (23:02):
Lebron James has been criticized about taking up too much
air in the room.
Speaker 5 (23:07):
I've set it myself. He's erin, Torres. I'm Dan Byer.
Speaker 4 (23:10):
But does another top athlete a possible goat? Does his
absence allow for something else to rise to a greater level?
We will discuss on this Independence day. He's erin Toaori's findament,
Aaron Underscore Torris. You can find me at Dan Byer

It's Comito and Rich here at Fox Sports Radio. I'm
Dan Byer. He is Aaron Torres hanging out on this
fourth of July. Props to Cavino and Rich for completing
the Dan Slam as they were in for Dan Patrick
all week long.
Speaker 5 (24:22):
It won't be tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (24:23):
I'll be with the Gottlieb tomorrow morning in for Dan
Patrick here on Fox Sports Radio. Hit airin up at
Aaron Underscore Torris. You can find me at Dan Byer
on Fox. We're hanging out. Iowa Sam's here, Producer Shay
and Manzi Blanios is here as well. She's about to
give us the latest of what is happening on this
fourth of July, and then we'll talk about the real
event that makes the fourth the fourth.
Speaker 5 (24:44):
Let's head over to the news desk, Manzi hanging out.
Speaker 6 (24:47):
Hello Moncey, Hi again, happy fourth. Now are you gonna
do any fireworks with Brody? H?
Speaker 4 (24:53):
We are fire danger because it's super hot and super dry.
Speaker 1 (24:58):
Yea.
Speaker 4 (24:58):
So hopefully there will be something like locally in the
streak that we can do, but I'm going to rely
on the neighbors for that to provide that. But I'm
sure there'll be some some of idiots yeap watching them
up in there is sure?
Speaker 1 (25:12):
Really quick?
Speaker 3 (25:13):
Has anyone become more synonymous like a lot of people
are synonymous with a lot of things. Jason Pierre Paul.
When I say that name, I don't really think you
think super Bowl champ. I think you think the dude
that blew is freaking hand off like an idiot fireworks.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
They're not trying to be a jerk, but it's just yes, yeah, no,
it's true.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
Who I can't think of many people that are more
synonymous with something than Jason Pierre Paul.
Speaker 1 (25:36):
I think of him every Fourth of July, So that's sweet.
Speaker 6 (25:39):
That's sweeter.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
I know, random, I know, my brain's all over the place.
I apologize. No, no, no, not at all.
Speaker 6 (25:44):
Let's check in on baseball. It's a full day of baseball.
Two games currently going on. Oriols beating the Mariners two
to one. Bottom of the fifth. Gunner Henderson, who is
going to participate in the home run Derby, hit that
two run shot. The A's are blanking the Angels three zero,
top of the fifth inning, the Red's complete. He did
a three game sweep of the Yankees, an eight to
four win in the Bronx, but it was a good
(26:05):
day for anyone who was present. Six homers were hit
in that one. Ian Happ went four for four with
two three round home runs, and the Cubs defeated the
Phillies ten to two. But Philadelphia still has the best
record in baseball at fifty seven and thirty. A little
golf for you, Dan Hayden Springer posted the fourteenth sub
sixty round in.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
PGA Tour history at the John Dear Classic.
Speaker 6 (26:29):
He is in the lead after the first round after
finishing twelve under fifty nine.
Speaker 1 (26:33):
I think that's pretty good.
Speaker 5 (26:34):
That's very good.
Speaker 6 (26:35):
I guess I think I don't know much about golf,
but I think that's pretty good.
Speaker 8 (26:39):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (26:40):
Like father, like son, our very own LeVar Arrington, his son,
LaVar Arrington the second has committed to Penn State. So
like father, like son, Yeah, yeah, exactly. In the NBA today,
the Warriors agreed to a deal acquiring Buddy Healed via
sign and trade from the seventy six ers, who are
going to get in return a twenty three already one
(27:00):
Dallas second round pick to Philadelphia. The deal guarantees Buddy
Hill two years and twenty one million, while the Raptor's
forty fifth overall pick, Jamal shed has agreed to a
three year, six point one million dollar rookie contract. And
the last thing I'll tell you here. In the NFL,
there's a photograph of Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in a
(27:21):
walking boot that surfaced on social media yesterday. He was
apparently on vacation. YESPN has a story that we don't
know when that photo was taken, but that he is
no longer wearing the boot. He did suffer a minor
foot sprain, but it's not expected to impact him when
training camp begins on July twenty fifth.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
That put it in the queue.
Speaker 4 (27:40):
Put it in the queue because we have got a
lot to talk about with the Dallas Cowboys coming up
in about forty minutes here. Yeah, Matzi, did you take
in the hot dog eating contest today?
Speaker 6 (27:51):
Like a little bit, it's just really hard to watch
for me, Like I get a little bit gross style
with g Lizzies.
Speaker 4 (27:58):
I get it. I think a lot of people out
of the same way. Aaron Torres, I know is something
you were boycotting it. You just weren't feeling the buzz
because of the dispute between Nathan's and Impossible Meats and
Joey Chestnut, who, by the way, is hosting his own
eating contest at Fort Bliss or in Fort Bliss, Texas,
(28:19):
at the Fort Bliss Meet and Greet, and that is
m e at and.
Speaker 5 (28:24):
Greet right now. I'm watching it on YouTube.
Speaker 4 (28:27):
It's crazy enough, but Joey Chestnut doing his own thing
because he wasn't at Coney Island today as part of
the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. And you're you're you
were kind of turned off because there was no Joey
Chestnut today.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Well, well, Tomatsi's point, I'm turned off by the entire process.
Every year because it's repulsing. But it's only that I
was turned off. I don't feel I don't feel you know, well,
we'll do the typical Well, we'll wait to see what
the ratings were. You know, we'll get the ratings update
and compared it to years past. But you know, listen,
I'll say is that I do think that in the
(29:00):
past there's been a little bit of build up, and
you know, Joey Chestnut at this point, he's kind of
competing against himself and history and whatever. I felt like
there was no buzz leading in, and I felt like
there was no buzz on social media. And I know that,
you know, July fourth, everybody's traveling, spend a time with family,
but usually you and I are working on fourth of
July in one of these time slots, and usually during
(29:22):
the hot dog eating competition, people are talking about it.
And I just felt like today nobody really seemed to care.
And it made me wonder's Joey Chestnut bigger than the
sport of competitive meeting itself?
Speaker 5 (29:36):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (29:37):
I went there, baby, Oh, I went there. I'm full
it takes today, I said, stepped.
Speaker 4 (29:41):
On you as well a little bit there because I
was gonna say you aren't a Patrick Bertolletti.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
Fan who actually took home the mustard belt today with fifty.
Speaker 5 (29:49):
Eight hot dogs.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 5 (29:51):
I watched it today and not only did I watch it.
Speaker 10 (29:55):
I.
Speaker 4 (29:56):
Started to watch it again. No, I've that has already
had well. I'm actually already eating two hot dogs. Someone
on staff suggested I do this on the air, and
that is I completely vetoed that. I'm not going to
say their name, but someone said you should do this
on the air. You should eat your hot dogs on
the air. I do have a couple of dogs down.
I'm probably gonna stop at a couple of dogs. It's
(30:18):
about as much as I could get. But Patrick Bertoletti
is a name that apparently doesn't ring it, you know.
Speaker 5 (30:24):
Bring people to the tubes.
Speaker 4 (30:26):
But I'll tell you this, Aaron Torres without Joey Chestnut,
and maybe he is bigger than everything else. It was
actually a competitive fight, like it wasn't where Joey Chestnut
was running away with it.
Speaker 1 (30:39):
You weren't sure who was going to win.
Speaker 4 (30:42):
And then at the end because you also you didn't
know who was really good because you didn't know anybody there,
so there was something new to it, and it was
something different, And yeah, you missed the star power and
you want to see Chestnut win again or you want
to see somebody take him down. I get that aspect
wasn't there. So that maybe makes your point that he's
bigger than all of this, and he has his own
(31:03):
Netflix special with Kobyashi that could really prove the point.
But I, yeah, I enjoyed the hot dog eating contest
today even sands Joey Chestnuts. So your point maybe right,
but I still think it was an enjoyable viewing experience.
Speaker 3 (31:17):
So you're one of those you'd rather have an NBA
where four different teams win a title in four years
than the Warriors dynasty.
Speaker 1 (31:24):
Is that what you're telling me?
Speaker 4 (31:25):
Yeah, you know, it is a comparison that I've thought of.
And while I haven't been in love with these NBA
finals as of late, I do think it's better than
we when we had to just deal with Warriors and
Caves the whole time.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Now, you know, I but let me let me even
switch this a different direction. I don't remember. Listen, I
can't sit here and say that definitively. You know there
were ads it just but did not did it not
feel like even the lead up was a little bit
less than usual, or is there never a lead up?
Speaker 1 (31:59):
Am I crazy?
Speaker 3 (32:00):
It just didn't feel like there was any buzz to
it at all going in. Maybe once well maybe once
it started it was fun if you were watching. It
just didn't feel like there was much really to anybody
who was even talking.
Speaker 4 (32:10):
Maybe Joey Chestnut wasn't doing as many of the rounds
and the media to competing in it, and uh the
caf youn know and Rich have him on.
Speaker 5 (32:17):
I feel bad, we're feeling in for theizing.
Speaker 4 (32:19):
Yeah, they did so, so there was so there was
there were some rounds being made. But I'll tell you
another thing about this, and it's not just about Joey Chestnut.
George Say, the promoter, was kind of behind all of this.
He's the uh what do they call the Carnival Barker
Magnificent job and Aaron Torres on the heels of Today's
(32:41):
hot dog eating contest. This is all courtesy of ESPN.
I'm giving you my top lines that we heard in
the the announcements for the eaters that we were learning about. Okay, okay,
this was this was Nick Wherry who was bald. He's
got a red, white and blue mohawk. Mohawk, huge biceps.
(33:02):
This is kind of I say number six because I
didn't know what was the best in the top spot.
This is number six in my I guess top five
if you will, of best shout outs today from George say.
Speaker 2 (33:14):
The bloodline of the warriors who fought in the Great battles.
As the beginning of time stretches forward through the eons,
and even today, there are those who share this birthright,
and so shall history. Here the echo of itself in
the triumphs of this man. Fifty hard boiled eggs in
(33:35):
three minutes and four seconds. Two gallons of baby food,
forty eight hot dogs and buns, ranked number four in
the world.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
From Tampa, Florida.
Speaker 4 (33:47):
Nick, worry, Okay, two gallons of baby food.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
That's what I heard. All I heard, and I didn't
hear anything else after that. What gallons?
Speaker 4 (33:58):
Manzi, don't worry. This next one is for you. This
is Gideon og. Yes, Gideon og is being introduced by
George sha.
Speaker 2 (34:06):
He is the eighth archangel Gideon the Exalted, six feet
nine inches tall, seven feet from tip of wing to
tip of wing. The undisputed koe eating Champion of the World.
Two pounds of boloney and fifty two seconds, ten pounds
(34:27):
of baked beans in one minute and forty five seconds,
thirty eight hot dogs and buns, ranked number six in
the world.
Speaker 5 (34:35):
Diddyon og undisputed kale eating Champion.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Yeah, I wanted to know how much kl he had.
Speaker 5 (34:44):
He'll know what.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
No one challenges him, Torres, no one when it comes
to kale. No one is challenging Gideon og I hot.
Speaker 3 (34:51):
He didn't eat all of that together. Baked beans, bolooney
and kale does not sound like the ice.
Speaker 4 (34:57):
Pounds of bolognyan under a minute. It sounds like it's baloney,
but it's true. Sean Yeger was introduced as well. You
got to hear this.
Speaker 2 (35:06):
Fifty donuts, sixteen pounds of strawberry shortcake, thirty six hot
dogs and buns. A major new talent on the MLE
circuit from Phoenixville, PA.
Speaker 4 (35:18):
Johan Jaeger sixteen pounds of strawberry shortcake.
Speaker 6 (35:23):
No one I can understand.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
I am, I could give mine malan all.
Speaker 4 (35:28):
Right, okay, and my final one, this is a George
Chiger who it's just amazing. Yeah, just there's the top
tour for George. This is number two from George Shay.
Speaker 2 (35:43):
Who speaks in the language of Hell to herald the
coming reign of Darkness. A single Josh and de West
joke durtra hooktum tree or translated to English, prepare we
had to spend eternity.
Speaker 5 (36:01):
In a bit of torment my time as that.
Speaker 1 (36:05):
Okay, all right, all right, you the Exorcist. Oh okay.
Speaker 4 (36:12):
This was the topper though, for George Tiger, the Red
Horse of Death, I'm giving away.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
Take it away, Sam, ladies and gentlemen, I give you
George Chigger.
Speaker 1 (36:24):
The Red Horse of Death.
Speaker 2 (36:27):
A man so evil they put him in.
Speaker 1 (36:30):
Prison in Hell, Hell, prison.
Speaker 2 (36:35):
So evil.
Speaker 4 (36:37):
Hell was like, we can't handle this guy, like we
gotta do something about him. And here he is eating
hot dogs on the fourth of July. Oh, there's something
with showmanship, Torres. So you may not like that. Joey
Chestnut was there, but George Shay brought it today on ESPN,
Bodog is about this.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
If George Shay screams in the woods but nobody's there
to hear it, did he really talk about in Hell?
Speaker 1 (37:01):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (37:01):
Man, a man so evil they put him in prison
in hell.
Speaker 7 (37:06):
Hell.
Speaker 5 (37:06):
Didn't want anything to do with them.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
Oh he's Arizauris.
Speaker 5 (37:10):
Yeah. Oh it's magnificent. My favorite one of the day.
Speaker 4 (37:13):
All right, hanging out here on the fourth of July,
Manty Milanios is here, so Isiowa, Sam and producer Shay.
We're having some good times. Monty talked about the special
day of the PGA Tour. Yeah, we got a little
golf to talk about next and Erin Torres may have
solved all of golf's problems.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
That's next year on if you Know What're rit j
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 2 (37:30):
A man so evil they put him in.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
Prison in Hell.
Speaker 7 (37:36):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation. Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app search FSR to
listen live.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
It's Comito and Rich here at Fox Sports Radio. He's
Erin Torres.
Speaker 4 (37:51):
I'm Dan byer In for the guys here on the
fourth of July, keeping our eyes on everything. Joey Chestnut
just wrapped up his event that he had in in
Fort Bliss, Texas. Took on four veterans Aaron Torres in
a hot dog eating contest. He beat all four of
them they combined for forty nine hot dogs. Chestnut had
(38:11):
fifty seven, which would have been one short of today's total.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
So Patrick Bertoletti would have ended up beating Chestnut.
Speaker 4 (38:20):
Now who knows, like in the arena, if they were
side by side, if there would have been any intimidation factor,
or if maybe just the pressure of the moment would
have pushed Joey Chestnut. But he had fifty seven dogs
today in his event where they raised like one hundred
thousand dollars for charity.
Speaker 3 (38:39):
So what you're saying is this is essentially like the
conspiracy theory that like Michael Jordan just retired on top
and just was like in ninety eight. I know he
came back with the Wizards, but we don't count that.
So like when oh, I mean, Michael Jordan just retired
because he knew he couldn't maintain at that level.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
That's basically what happened with Joey Shu.
Speaker 4 (38:57):
Sure could be well, we'll find out, maybe I'll add
some more spice to the Netflix special that ends up
popping up. But Joey chess Nunn, you have fifty seven
today in his own event that was not at Coney
Island PGA Tour. Montzi told Jay Hayden Springer shot fifty
nine at the John Deer Classic. You can go low
in the Quad Cities and Springer today with the magical
(39:19):
fifty nine. It's not one of the marquee tour events.
It's not a signature event. It's actually the event erin
Torres that I always point to that's hurt the most
by this fracturing golf right now, because I think it
means so much to the Quad Cities and if you
can get star players there, which you couldn't always do,
it's great for the city and it's great for the community.
(39:40):
But you're thinking that there may be a silver lining
in all of this because we're talking about Scotty Scheffler
winning all the time and who the real winner and
golf in all of this is.
Speaker 3 (39:49):
So I'll try to be quick. But the other day
I was working with Mark Willard and we're talking about
star power and like, Scotty Scheffler the best player in
the world, but does he have star power? And it
struck me Scotty Scheffler doesn't. I don't think you know
golf better than me, but I don't think he has
star power in the traditional sense, but also the guys
that you would deem to be stars Brooks, Kopka, etc.
(40:11):
That are on the live tour. It hasn't equated into
ratings or interest for that tour. And so what struck
me was, is it possible the PGA Tour itself is
actually the star of golf? In other words, regardless of
who's ultimately playing. For the most part, we're tuning in
every single week.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
I think you could say that for the majors, and
I think that is a big part of it. And
that's that was And so to your point, yes, I
agree with you. The problem that I just saw was
that the PGA Tour is getting stripped so much that
there would be almost no one there. And at some
point you at least have to have some people. So
if you have Justin Thomas, you have Jordan Speed, you
have Rory McElroy, and you have Scotty Scheffler, and you
(40:50):
have the PGA Tour, Yeah, it lends to your point. So, yeah,
a pretty good observation there. Aaron Torres, thank you. He
is Aeron Torres. I'm Dan Pyre in for Cavino and
rich Dak Prescott's in the news in the Cowboys have
gotten all bad news offseason.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
How will that equate? That's next
