Speaker 2 (00:11):
Find your local station for Gavino and Rich at Fox
Sports Radio dot com, or stream us live every day
on the iHeartRadio app by searching FSR. Man I walked
in today, Rich, Oh, I heard I walked in today
and I was like, what is going on? Because our
good pal Isaac Lowencron, who's on the updates, he was
(00:34):
blowing a gasket.
Speaker 1 (00:35):
I don't know what that means. I heard his head
was spinning around.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Yeah, no, yeah, like I saw steam coming out of
his ears. He was so mad, and he goes, and
you know when you just politely asked somebody, Hey, man,
how's it going, He's like, hold, I did I tell you?
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Apparently? I was like, what's going on?
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Man?
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Everything? You're right?
Speaker 2 (00:54):
And you know what, when he told me the story,
I understood. No, it all made sense, it really did.
He goes, you know Paul Skeins. I'm like, of course,
everybody knows Paul Skans. We talked about him yesterday.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
I'm more familiar with his fiance. I'm sorry his girlfriend.
Oh yeah, everybody, as you know, going back to LSU
Libby done. But this guy's living the life. You mentioned
him yesterday saying no one's living a better life right
now than Paul Skeens.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
We said yesterday. If you missed it, check the podcast
Covino and Rich. Who's had a better twelve months than
this guy? Right College World Series? He made his debut, He's.
Speaker 1 (01:27):
Laying it up.
Speaker 4 (01:28):
Hot girlfriend, all start done, hot girlfriend, hot girlfriend, and
then as of today on a breat must great mustache
a boat with his hot girlfriend.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
But as of today, get this, the year gets even better.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
His girlfriend got hotter.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Everybody's working, everybody's living their life.
Speaker 1 (01:45):
You may have missed.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
If you're on your way home, here's the update. He
twenty two years old, rookie pitcher is thrown a no
hitter through seven, no hitter through seven against Melia Walker,
ninety nine pitches in eleven strikeouts, and they yank him,
(02:10):
they pull him out of the game.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
And I don't want to.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
I don't want to steal Isaac's thunder, so I'm gonna
let him express his disdain. But we got a clip
from the manager, right Danny g Let's take a listen
as to why they pulled out Paul Skeins from.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
His no hitter.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
He was tired.
Speaker 5 (02:30):
It really didn't have anything to do with the pitch count.
Everybody makes it about pitch counts. It was about where
he was at. It was about trusting your eyes, trusting him.
When I went and talked to him after that, I
mean he was tired. They did a good job of
wearing him down, and I mean he gave us everything
he had.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
That's Derek Shelton, Pirates manager. So now you know he
was tired. But there's a lot of fun facts surfacing today.
Courtesy of Bursch, one of our master editors and producers here,
Schemes threw one hundred plus pitches thirteen times at LSU
last season, topping out at one hundred and twenty four
(03:06):
in a complete game versus two lane. Apparently he's thrown
over one hundred twenty pitches a bunch of times.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
I mean recently, we're talking about all those wild stats
that came out where Nolan Ryan would throw two hundred
and forty pitches and then five days later throw one
hundred and eighty pitches. I get it. It's not the
seventies or eighties anymore, but a rookie star that's electrifying
the baseball world. You don't let this guy go out
for the eighth. Maybe he gets a quick eighth inning
(03:32):
under ten pitches, a little bing bang boom, and then
he could go out for the ninth. You pull him
at ninety nine in the seventh.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
Yeah, that's tough, man, And everybody pirates, fans especially, but
baseball fans want to see greatness. Want to see this
young kid do something cool, want to see a legend
in the making. Right, So, like I said, I walked
in Lowan cron is like, oh, and this is the
problem with baseball to.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Hear I want to hear from Isaac and see, Yeah,
on stand.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Uh, let's welcome the one of the greatest update guys.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
On the what do you mean one of well?
Speaker 2 (04:06):
Because I don't want to disrespect anybody else, but you
know what, what's wrong with that school? The greatest Isaac
Lowland Cross That.
Speaker 6 (04:15):
Is a nice haircut CAO. By the way, sorry I
failed to mention that earlier.
Speaker 3 (04:19):
First, I'm trying to kiss up, so he'll call you tycoon.
Speaker 6 (04:23):
First of all, I dispute what you guys just played
of manager Derek Shelton because his last inning, the bottom
of the seventh inning, he retired the Brewers on a
grand total of six pitches. So that completely negates that argument.
And he wasn't yes six pitches, and it, unfortunately, is
(04:49):
another example of the bigger picture issue here. This is
a reason that baseball is continuing to lose popular nationally.
I was mentioning it to Camino Rich when we were
growing up and somebody was going to the ninth inning
with a no hitter, ESPN would always cut live to
(05:12):
that game no matter what, and it was it was
a cool thing. And that's because baseball was a lot
more popular back then than it is now. And I'll
just conclude with one final thought. This tweeted by someone
named cam and I think it's representative of literally how
all Pirates fans and baseball fans are feeling. I think
(05:32):
I speak for everyone in Pirates Nation when we say,
bleep you, Derek Shelton, are you absolutely kidding me? He
just pitched a six pitch inning. I hate this man
more than anything. Bleeping rob us of one thing we
can cheer about in the last ten bleeping years, bleeping
bleep you unquote.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
Yeah, you know, and you're seeling a moment from this kid.
This is how legends are made. Isaac did express too.
This is why baseball is no longer America's pastime. It
dropped the ball. It failed to allow this moment to happen.
We're rob his fans. So there's a lot of speculation
back and forth. There's a lot of people that agree
with Isaac, but if you look through social media, Rich
(06:11):
and take the temperature, there's also a lot of people
that are, like, you know, he's twenty two years old.
You know, let him blow his arm out and you
let him keep going like it's not worth it. It's
not worth it. Save this kid and save his career.
So we open up the phones and we break it
down eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox. But Rich,
it gets a little worse too, because they bring in
Colin Holderman, right, and after his second pitch, no hitter
(06:36):
broke and Jake Bowers hits a single. The dude works
himself into bases loaded jam. The Pirates end up winning,
like I said, one nothing over the Brewers. But this
dude lets up to no hitter at his second pitch, So.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Is this Dave Roberts put him in.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, right, Is this how baseball loses in the big picture?
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Danny g what are your thoughts? Man, you're a big
baseball fan.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
No, I don't like this either.
Speaker 7 (06:59):
And the great Tommy John, the Tommy John the surgery
was named after him. He was on the Fifth Hour
podcast with Ben Maller. I booked him. It was a
couple of years ago, and he said he swore up
and down that he had a healthier arm when he
threw more, not less. So he questioned resting pictures nowadays, I.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Gotta make it trust the guy whose arm is.
Speaker 7 (07:24):
Well but rich, he said, when he came back from
that surgery, that's how he was able to keep going
and keep the momentum for himself was because he kept
his arm loose by throwing a lot.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
He said.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
Whenever he had too much time off, that's when he
had injuries get tight.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
And I get it. Yeah, I could see that. I
want to make it clear too, again, Cavino, I think
this is weak. I really do. I think this is
the weakest you got to put yourself in in uh,
in perspective of imagine if this was your team, is
your team and you got a historical moment about to happen.
How fired down are you gonna be as a fan?
Speaker 1 (08:01):
There's layers here if you don't mind letting me adulter second.
Speaker 2 (08:06):
For sure, but also imagine if you were at the game.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Well, I was gonna said, do you mind if I sit
back on a cocktail while we're doing this? I feel
like I want to start the weekend with you right now, dude.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
I wanted to have like a casual Thursday and start
the weekend early. I didn't expect to come in and
you know, Loan Crowns all fired up got me fired up.
Speaker 1 (08:22):
I wanted to relax too. Is he doing hurt in
between updates? He's doing laps around the hallway.
Speaker 4 (08:27):
Yeah, yeah, I saw punch a hole in the wall.
He threw a chair in between the glass between the studios.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Kailed them.
Speaker 6 (08:32):
Security has been notified, unfortunately.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
You know that first aid kit that was by the bathroom,
We ripped it off the wall.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
They smashed his head in it.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
The hot yoga manager came in and said he was
making too much noise.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
I know from all the huffing and puffet.
Speaker 6 (08:44):
I told him to get bent.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
No, but you know what, I agree. It is Uh,
it's very weak and we'll take your phone calls. But Rich,
I do want to know your thoughts as a lifelong
baseball fan.
Speaker 1 (08:53):
Well, I mean Shelton said the eye test. He must
have failed the eye test the way you did last
time you went to the eye doctor.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
His eyes I failed. Yeah, trust your eyes, they said,
I have covid ie.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
If there's if this guy is saying he was tired,
I mean, you gotta trust the manager, but don't give
me this bs I test. As Isaac said, six pitches
a quick seventh inning. That's when you give the guy
a chance. It brings up a few points the eye test. Secondly,
do you remember when you'd be watching baseball and this
didn't even cross your mind, because if a guy was
thrown a no no, it's like unless he had one
(09:27):
hundred and thirty pitches, there was no doubt he's staying
in the game. It robs baseball of the no hitter alert.
Like you know, when your buddy with text, youre like, yo,
if you're not watching, I'm not gonna say anything, but
put the game on, like like the little hey, a
no no's happening. What's the point if you know the
guy's gonna go six. The Mets pitch two no hitters
(09:49):
in their franchise history. One you'll dispute because you think
Santana didn't really throw no hitter.
Speaker 2 (09:55):
Well, if I'm not mistaken, wasn't it Carlos Peltron who
who hit a double? It was a clear double. Now
a foul ball, dude, No, it was. It was a double.
If you listen, I know that Santana got that no hitter,
and I know where you're going, too, rich He was
never really the same after that because he extended himself.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Well that's point one, so you could argue that side.
But the second Mets no hitter, you're thinking to yourself,
what second no hitter? You know why? You don't know
because it was started by Tylor McGill and cleaned up
by like three guys in the bullpen. I think a
bullpen mixmash no hitter is trash. I know it's still
an accomplishment, but you can't tell me it's the same thing.
(10:36):
I refuse to acknowledge, Like if if Skeen's was dealing
and he threw nine innings no hitter domination over ten strikeouts,
that's history. If Skeens pitches seven even at the bullpen
cleaned up those two innings, that said loses its pizzazz
with Isaac's right in that it's robbing you of what
a no hitter was a special moment for one guy
(10:58):
that the sun was shine on him that day.
Speaker 2 (11:01):
That's over, and like I said, a historic moment for
a young superstar where the casual fan comes up to
you at the barber shop and he's like, oh, you
heard about this guy, Paul Skean's no hitter. Huh, twenty
two years old. It stole a moment from everybody baseball
needs that.
Speaker 1 (11:18):
It's a joke because Skeens is the most popular young dude.
Like we joke about Levy Donald his hawk girlfriend. Oh
did you hear about his hot girlfriend? But this guy
is a legit cy young candidate, Rookie of the Year, candidate,
everything candidate. I mean, the guy's got a sweet mustache,
sweet girlfriend. He's living the life. We talked about it
at nauseum the other day, how Paul Skeen's is the man?
You know what? It made him even more than man?
(11:39):
Could you know? I don't know. Starting off his baseball
career with a no no. That just adds to this
guy's hype. And we say na, Shelton says nah no.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
P We'll probably play that clip again. But I really
think that Shelton was just doing damage control and just
beating the reporters to the punch.
Speaker 1 (12:02):
You really think.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
That Paul Skeens and Paul Skeans won't debate this because
he's a young player and he's gonna respect his manager.
You really think Paul Skeens was like, Coach, and I
don't know if I can go out there for the
eighth I'm tired, Dudel. These guys are our fierce competitors.
You know this kid wanted the ball. I'm not buying
it at all.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Filling the blank Covino because I know you and I
share brains. Sometimes there's a classic moment Red Sox are
coming to mind. I think it's the rocket, Yep, it's
the rocket. Roger Clemens, Okay, do you remember mac namara
back in the eighties insisted that I pulled Clemens because
he said, yeah, Coach, I'm done. And then Clemens is like, yeah, no, dude,
(12:45):
I didn't say that nonsense like, so you could tell
me all day. I don't think Paul skeins, if you're
a competitor at his level, you think he wants to
come out of the game with a no hitter. No way,
no way, That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (12:59):
What Shelton's was damage control and straight up bs in
my opinion.
Speaker 1 (13:04):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
And again just to make it clear, because not everybody
big baseball fans, but you would have heard about this
if it happened. Paul Skeen's last twelve months, College World Series, Champion,
College World Series Most Outstanding Player, recipient of the Dick
Kwser Trophy, number one overall pick MLB All Star, hot
girlfriend Livy Dunn, and would have had a potential no
(13:27):
hitter today talk about a year. But they robbed him
of this, of this icing on the cake, the Dick
trousers awe, the Dick Howser Trophy. Oh okay, no, no, no,
that's that's a truth. That's an a word I won
back in the early two thousands.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Rich, Yes, sorry, all.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
Right, let's go to the phone. So let's say what's
up eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox at Covino
and Rich. If you want to chime in on social media,
you want to start with Buck in Cincy.
Speaker 3 (13:55):
Yeah, let's go to Cincinnati.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Hey Buck, Hey, how's it going? Hey buddy, what's up?
Speaker 8 (14:00):
Well?
Speaker 9 (14:00):
I think that this is just a symbol of the
nanny state society we live in, helicopter parents and all
of that. And you know, our from Cincinnati where we
had the great job Vandermere just remembered for one thing,
throwing two back to back no hitters. And I think
to rob this opportunity from Schemes, who seems like a
marvelous young man even though he plays for the Pirates,
(14:23):
is really a travesty.
Speaker 1 (14:25):
And he has that.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Sort of workhorse, lumbering, big lug of a players sort
of vibe and mentality about him.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
He's had some.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Little dude who might throw his arm out. It's like,
you know, I want to see this guy go for him.
Plus have you seen his girlfriend? Plus his girlfriend?
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Really let me let me tell you, you know, cave,
you know, robbing not just Schemes. I really honestly feel
this way robbing the baseball world of a moment, because
what do we always say about baseball? You and I
love it. We played it as a kid. I'm in
my hometown. You know what I did today I passed
a little league field that I played on as a kid,
and I told my daughter, like, that's what daddy learned
(15:02):
how to play baseball. I love baseball. You love baseball.
We always talk about our love of the game. But
you know what, we always, in that same breath say, yeah,
you know, they're lacking those big stars and we have
one in our hands.
Speaker 2 (15:17):
Something else. You brought up, something else. You know from
a child's perspective growing up, you remember where you were
when Dave Righetty pitched his no hitter, when Dwight Goodden
threw a no no David Cohne, I'm not even all Yankees,
David Cohn had a perfect game. You remember those things
you robbed the younger generation, the kid, the player they're
all hyped about. I got his baseball card, I got
(15:38):
his autograph. The little kids in that in that world,
the ayre so pumped about Paul Skins, and you rob
these kids of this awesome moment that they'll never forget.
You know, that's how you build lifelong fans. That's the problems.
That's where Isaac is right.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
It's also how you build superstars. And like I said,
we we have a young star that this didn't do
him any favors. Listen, some people may say, who cares.
At the end of the day, there's one hundred and
sixty two long games. But you know, it would have
been a pretty cool little, uh, little thing for him
to do in the first half of the baseball season
where he's, like I said, rookie of the Year candidate,
(16:12):
say young candidate.
Speaker 2 (16:13):
No, no, yep, uh. Let's talk to Dean in Iowa City.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
What up, Dean?
Speaker 10 (16:18):
What's going on?
Speaker 9 (16:19):
Guys?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Nothing?
Speaker 2 (16:20):
Man, just trying to break it down because there is
a back and forth on social media, a lot of
disappointed fans, but there's a lot.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Of people like, well, what do you expect?
Speaker 2 (16:28):
Of course, take him out, he's a young guy. Your thoughts, Well,
I can understand both sides.
Speaker 10 (16:33):
But at the same time, I'm looking at this from
a systems perspective. How many innings z thro last year
in college?
Speaker 4 (16:41):
What's it?
Speaker 10 (16:41):
You know, what's his top innings he's ever thrown? And
you know, is he is he going to be pushing
that near the end of the year. You know, there's
there's more considerations than just God, you really wanted to
see a no hitter that'd be great.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
He threw one hundred plus pitches thirteen times at LSU
last season, topping out it one four in a complete
game versus TWU lane. He's also, yeah, he throws up
one hundred pitches several times.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
You know in the bigs though. He's right, You're you're
throwing thirty five to thirty five ish starts wearing college
like nowhere close to that, So I get that maybe, like, hey,
it's a young dude. To ease him in.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
He threw one hundred and twenty two innings last season
for LSU.
Speaker 1 (17:20):
Yeah, so it's it is about half of what you
would want out of an ace. Right, you want your
you want your you want your inning eaters in top
end of the rotation, guys to give you at least
two hundred innings.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Right, let's go to Art in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
What up Art?
Speaker 8 (17:34):
Hey, how's it going, guys?
Speaker 1 (17:36):
It's going good man? Good man?
Speaker 11 (17:38):
Hey, just want that.
Speaker 10 (17:39):
I love the show and I want to preface this
with I'm a Milwaukee Bird.
Speaker 8 (17:42):
Fan and they had no business pulling him out of
the game.
Speaker 10 (17:45):
My goodness.
Speaker 8 (17:46):
You guys nailed the comment about.
Speaker 12 (17:47):
How esp I needs to cut into the no hitters.
Speaker 10 (17:50):
And it would transcend the fan bases.
Speaker 12 (17:52):
That's how we got to know other people before interleague sports,
et cetera.
Speaker 13 (17:55):
It was the best.
Speaker 10 (17:56):
Yeah, I want to say, guys, I really appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Thank you man, You and Cavino. Our buddy Wes, who
listens on Fox Sports Radio in Vegas, said, dude throws
over one hundred in entire start, and you're not gonna
give this guy the opportunity after seven when he's at
ninety nine pitches, like you're telling me that there is
no nudging where it'd be like, oh come on, come on, yo,
(18:20):
skip coach. Let me go out there in the eighth.
If I get in trouble, yank me. If I give
up a hit a walk, pull me, but give me
a shot.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
It was his day, man, it was his day, clearly.
Eleven strikeouts through seven ninety nine pitches. They yanked them,
and Rich I'm glad our last caller, you know. He
said he's a Brewers fan. He was watching and they
had nothing. He was surprised. It's also different when you're
watching it right, Like we walked into this news like wait, what.
Speaker 11 (18:48):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation, Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio

Speaker 1 (18:59):
Live Paully Fools Go here with Tony Foosco. Yeah.
Speaker 14 (19:03):
As everybody knows, we're the hosts of the award winning
Polly and Tony Foosco Show.
Speaker 11 (19:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 14 (19:07):
But instead of us telling you how great we are,
here's how Dan Packrick described us when he came on
our show.
Speaker 1 (19:12):
Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.
Speaker 9 (19:16):
What what are you doing?
Speaker 1 (19:17):
Were interrupting our promo?
Speaker 11 (19:18):
Yeah, you wasn't talking about you.
Speaker 7 (19:21):
You took those clips totally out of context.
Speaker 14 (19:23):
Oh yeah, well after this promo, I'm gonna take you
out and beat you.
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Let me put this into context.
Speaker 1 (19:29):
Shut up.
Speaker 14 (19:30):
Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paully and Tony Fusco
Show on IoT Radio, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get
your podcasts.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
Yee, I'm in New York. I told you I actually
speaking of baseball. Walk past my little league field, and
if you ever get the chance, if you go to
your hometown, do it once because it'll bring back all
these memories. You're like, oh my god, I hit my
first home run on this field. I remember pitching on
(19:58):
this field. It's just a pretty cool memory. So if
you are in your hometown past the old football field
or baseball field or whatever you played on, it really does.
It'll get your brain going, it really will. It's special,
it really is. Think of all the moment you had
cause you know, at Union little league field.
Speaker 2 (20:16):
I'm sure, I mean twenty seven little league home runs. Yeah,
I want to relive all those. In fact, one day, rich,
did you stare at the mound and reminisce about that
time you could have had a no no, but you
were yanked in the seventh. Yes, Now in little league
you were yanked in the fourth. I know, yeah, in
the fourth, ah man. So anyway, let's talk Cam Newton.
(20:38):
You say you always get a good laugh at a
good Cam Newton story. Is it the stories or the
hats that he wears? I saw a real funny one.
It was like a mix of a fez and like
a he was wearing like a fez, but it had
like a strap around it, like like he was the
the grand marshal of a pre major. Yeah, like a
drum major hat. I'm a drum major. Now, what's the
(21:02):
kind of hat is that he wears? Mounty hats? He
wears all kind of crazy hats man.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Well, that is a good story. This is a great
story and involves Cam Newton and Christian McCaffrey. And then
this is as you call you know, you sometimes just
say it's a double doozy because there's like two questions
to be had. There's three questions I have here. Now.
Cam Newton was on his podcast because everyone's got a podcast,
and he was talking about not getting the invite to
(21:30):
Christian McCaffrey's wedding. Take a listen.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
About out to the McCaffrey's man Christian and oh.
Speaker 1 (21:37):
No, hold on, time to not look. Damn see, Matt,
I couldn't get an invite. I know, what is it?
Because of the bron period of people was brock there?
But you was the back you meto man, you know
so many You're like, yeah, I wasn't there because I
(21:58):
would have crashed him. I want to crash it, man,
Oh my god, I'd like to ask so much fun?
Speaker 2 (22:04):
Is that like an inviting your ex girlfriend to the wedding?
He a, it's his ex quarterback, that's part quarterback.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:10):
Well then McCaffrey responded or somehow you know you did
see on social media that McCaffrey said he hadn't heard
from Cam Newton in like four years, He hadn't responded
to any of his texts or dms. I think they
had a little bit of a back and forth after
as a result, right on Instagram and he said Instagram
(22:34):
doesn't count. Dude hasn't texted me. Cam Newton's like, what
number you got? But the point is Cam hadn't responded
in four years to McCaffrey's texts. So if you don't
talk to that person, question number one, can you be
mad if you weren't invited to the wedding?
Speaker 1 (22:51):
Now, I'm not saying that Cam Newton was mad about it.
Speaker 2 (22:53):
It sounded like he was having fun, sounded like you
wished he was there, but he wasn't.
Speaker 1 (22:59):
If you haven't talked to one of your old school
buddies in years, I think there's like a couple year,
you know, statute of limitations, like yo, if we haven't
even hit each other up or bsked about something, I
don't know if that person gets a wedding invite, even
if especially if you're trying to keep the wedding invite
list tight. So that's number one. Number two if you
(23:22):
find out someone's getting married and you're not invited, or
even if you can't go, for that matter, do you
still send a gift?
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Well, if you're not invited, hail to the nah. But
if you were invited and you can't make it, it's
it's Isn't it supposed to be standard that you still
owe them a gift? Isn't that like proper etiquette? Yes,
you don't even want to talk about how much you're
paying for a plate, right, because that's regionally different. People's
head spin when we suggest at least one hundred per plate.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
At least, I mean I was taking two hundred.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
Yeah, with shrinkflation and inflation, Yeah, maybe at least one
hundred and fifty the minimum.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
I don't know. I made a reference to giving my
niece five hundred dollars for her graduation, and people made
it sound like I was Travis Kelty spending three million
on a suite.
Speaker 2 (24:10):
Like regional differences, I get it. So again, cam Newton
hadn't responded to Christian McCaffrey's texts in four years, so
they haven't really communicated. Seemed a little butt hurt being
playful about it. Do you owe a gift. Still, would
it be a nice gesture if Cam sent them one
of his goofy hats. Here's a hat you could wear,
(24:32):
you know that, it'd be nice. You know, I think
it'd be nice. There's been plenty of times, for whatever reason,
I wasn't able to make friends' weddings, and I have
sent gifts just I don't want to say that a guilt,
just out of etiquette, just out of etiquette, Like I
appreciate the invite, but I can't make it to your
destination wedding or whatever. Here's a gift, and you know,
(24:54):
I don't think you have to go overboard when you're
not even there, but just a little something to say
you appreciate it and to keep the friendship going. It's
all about friendship maintenance too, and that's why I think
Cam Newton failed. He failed his friendship maintenance with Christian
McCaffrey and vice versa.
Speaker 1 (25:10):
Well, that's when you find out are we work friends
or real friends? Exactly? Yeah, that's the truth. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
And you know what, by the way, there's.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
A great cheapskate hack. I'm surprised you haven't brought this
up since you're the King of cheapskate hacks. Uh. Oh,
if you are getting married, invite all the rich people
you work with and all like the like. Think of
just send out a bunch of invites to like rich people.
Their secretary or assistant might just by nature be like, oh,
he can't make it or she can't make it. Here's
(25:38):
a couple hundred bucks.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Yeah, I'm gonna do that to all the bosses here
at Fox for sure if I get a lope or
get married or something.
Speaker 1 (25:45):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (25:46):
By the way, Rich, on a side note, today's my
anniversary with my girlfriend. Starting to feel the heat.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Well, i'd imagine you've been together seven years.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
Yeah, according to the not which is pretty much the
the site for weddings.
Speaker 1 (26:02):
Oh, isn't that the site that Cavid will tell this
girlfriend to go to, which she said, when are we
getting married? He's like, not good one, not good one,
good one, good one? Rich? Uh.
Speaker 4 (26:12):
Wedding gift etiquette generally encourages sending a gift even if
you can't attend. However, the decision is ultimately up to you,
so it's like a non answer, but you.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Don't have to. Yeah, but then are you ready?
Speaker 1 (26:23):
Frank?
Speaker 4 (26:23):
It's nice and that's what it says depending on your relationship.
Like if a random work colleague is like, you're invited
to my wedding.
Speaker 1 (26:29):
Cool.
Speaker 4 (26:30):
You don't have to send something, though, even though you
have to see that person every day. But if you
are close friends, family with that person, you technically should.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
You know what it is though.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
It's a great reminder or indicator I guess of where
you guys really stand in your relationship, because hey, I
thought of you enough to invite you, right, but you
didn't even show up or give me a gift, So
I guess you don't feel the same way about our
friendship and relationship. And even here in this story, I
think it's very clear that cam Newton and Christian McCaffrey
(27:00):
we aren't as tight as they once were, and that
that is proven now rich, in my opinion, to be
just a work relationship. They had camaraderie in the locker room,
but it stayed there and ended there.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
It's rich.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
I think you can attest to it. If there anyone that's
been married the like Rich. You got married how long ago?
Speaker 1 (27:17):
Twelve years? Yeah? Man?
Speaker 4 (27:19):
The period of time in which you get married, the
people that you invited to your wedding today, you most
like half of them, if not more, would not be
invited to if you got married today.
Speaker 1 (27:29):
We my wife and I had one hundred and fifty
people at our wedding. I'd say fifty of those one
fifty would be different.
Speaker 4 (27:36):
People exactly like work, your work setting changes. People come
and go. You're not seeing people on a regular basis
like family comes, you know, So it's like it would
be completely different in that capacity.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
Rich, would you invite Greg Olsen to your wedding because
that dude parties?
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Well? Could I read the Could I read the interaction,
the interaction with Olson and McCaffrey, just to you know,
give in the school. This is what McCaffrey put on
social media. He wrote me talking to Greg Olsen at
the bar. This was a great knife. But you know
what made it even better? Greg? What me if Cam
were here? I haven't got a text back in four years.
(28:15):
In fact, they just go green now. Greg takes a
sip of whiskey. He would have loved it four years
even on Instagram. Me only once, but that doesn't count. Christian,
why don't he love me? Man? Camera cuts to Cam
and Christian together while arms wide open plays by Crete
that's ncc.
Speaker 3 (28:37):
He sounds like a funny dude.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
That is funny man, And it would have been cool
to have Cam Newton here. I'm sure he seems like
a really fun dude. But they hadn't kept in touch.
So again, if you don't talk, can you be mad
if you weren't invited? Side nugget, I think if you
communicate through Instagram, that counts. I do think that counts. Now,
(29:00):
give a gift a gift? I think the answer is yes.
Speaker 1 (29:02):
Now, the spot you always say this, and this is
a good loophole, Spot always says well Edikkeett also says
you have a calendar year to give the couple.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
If that is actually correct, I mean I don't think
couples necessarily adhere to that. Hey, by the way I
use this, I've used this rule in my real life
because some of the times I didn't attend other people's
weddings because that was broke right, And you also so like,
I'll get I'll get around through that gift. I got
a year, right, Like, if you're not really confident in
the couple, feel free to use this because they may
(29:29):
be broken up within that year period. But yeah, it's
I think etiquette states that you have up to a
year to send a gift, which in twenty twenty four
is also ridiculous because you should be able to like
Venmo your wedding gift.
Speaker 1 (29:46):
Do you think it's classy or is it not classy
to tell your buddy like YO, can just venmo you
instead of getting you a car?
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Did venmote our buddy Jeff Edstrom who got married we
couldn't make his wedding. I'm sure he didn't mind at all.
And we have a question. You can think about it,
can you?
Speaker 15 (30:00):
It?
Speaker 2 (30:00):
Rnks someone that the brider groom hasn't met. This a
whole story. We're gonna get to it. We got more
Covino and Rich, but first an update from Isaac Lowencroft,
The Angry Lowancroft, The angry Lowencross.
Speaker 6 (30:15):
Yeah, speaking of weddings, potential Major League Baseball history was
left at the altars at arms. Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Paul
Skeens at a no hitter, going through seven innings at
Milwaukee with eleven strikeouts. He thrown only ninety nine pitches,
but was still pulled from the game. The reliever who
replaced him immediately allowed a single to lead off the
(30:35):
bottom of the eighth inning. Pirates did go on to
win the game one. Nothing. For a sampling of how
fans out there feel about manager Derek Shelton's decision to
pull Skeens, let me look at the mentions on Shelton's
Twitter account. Here's one from at Johnny two Times, who
posted as Shelton and I quote, You're a joke. I'd
(30:59):
come to every game and sit behind the dugout to
bleep on your parade. You suck as manager. I seen
a little league coach do a better job than you. Loser,
do we unquote.
Speaker 1 (31:14):
Hey, look at the time. If there's a certain what
we gonna do is go back.
Speaker 11 (31:23):
Back into time, throwing it back for a Thursday. Old
School went fifty hits at fifty after CNR give you
the time capsule topic and we reminisce together.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Yeah, so every Thursday we reminisce. We're reminiscing like the
Little Riverband. We throw it back and we get you involved.
Most interactive show on radio eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox at Covino and Rich on social media at
Fox Sports Radio. On this day, Rich, you know what
you're on This day, Boy, do you want to make
(31:57):
the announcement Rich loves anesday.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
I love on this day? I have two? Could I
give you the other one? Sure? On this day in
nineteen sixty seven, it was the debut of The Newlywed Show,
which is when we all started saying making whoopie. But
that's not what we're talking about.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Whoopielopy, great show, great game. But also on this day,
July eleventh, nineteen fourteen, oh Babe mother fin Rug made
his MLB debut pitching for the Boston Red Sox against
the Cleveland Naps at Fenway Park. Ruth, nineteen years old,
(32:35):
was the winning pitcher and his debut.
Speaker 1 (32:37):
Thirty seven hot dogs.
Speaker 2 (32:38):
Before the game, he had thirty seven hot dogs, but
he fizzled at.
Speaker 1 (32:41):
The play three women in the bleachers.
Speaker 2 (32:43):
He allowed eight hits, two runs, three women in the bleachers,
and posted one strikeout, didn't walk a batter, but made
history on this day, all those years ago, George Harrison style.
So Babe Ruth made his debut and changed the game forever.
(33:03):
Man the great bam Beano on this day. Wait, they're
the same guy. They're the same guy. So based on that, yeah,
we asked this question Fox Sports Radio Nation your most
memorable debuts. But guess what doesn't have to be in sports.
It could be a TV show, it could be a
(33:25):
rock band, it could be just a memorable debut. A
memorable debut that comes to mind for you could be anything.
Speaker 1 (33:32):
Well there's one. See do you want to go random
or obvious? Where which way you going first? That doesn't
matter to me. I'm gonna go one obvious. One. You
might not know because you remember this because it was
not that long ago. Trevor Story's debut. Guy hit two
home runs in his first two at vats, yes the
(33:54):
sakes and if you remember, he had like a great
first week or so where he was like just hit
and everything. So Trevor's story comes to mind, and uh,
this is one in the acting world that you might
not realize this was the person's first ever role. I'll
let you know what that is and we'll go over
all the greatest debuts a La Babe Ruth one hundred
(34:15):
something years ago. Next year on Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
Radio, I want to talk about any debut that stands
out to you. Could be in sports. Some name you
heard for years made his debut, it stuck out in
your memory. Is unforgettable, could be on TV, it could
be anywhere. It could be a band, it could be anything. Okay,
now I'm gonna take you back.
Speaker 1 (34:38):
Take you back.
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Do Doo doo doo, take you back.
Speaker 1 (34:43):
I'm gonna take Frank Stalo. You're Frank Saloon topic guy.
I always do that. Oh oh, take you back.
Speaker 2 (34:51):
And we're also gonna take your phone calls at eight seven,
seven ninety nine on Fox, I'm Gonna take you Back.
The year was nineteen eighty three, three, nineteen eighty three.
I was a pumpkin pie haircutted little kid, right, pumpkin pie.
Speaker 1 (35:06):
Haircutted little kid. Rich.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
I looked like Ernie Rayes Junior from Sidekicks, and I'm
not even Filipino, but that's how I looked, right. I
looked like Tattoo from Fantasy Island.
Speaker 1 (35:18):
And I was so.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Busty playing though that's Cavino. I was so pumped because
I had these toys. I think you've heard of them,
called he.
Speaker 1 (35:26):
Men he Man.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
But here's the thing about he men. He Men were
toys that just looked awesome, right, But we didn't know
the backstory of these toys really at all, other than
what we read in the packets and stuff. We didn't
know the backstory. So in September of nineteen eighty three,
I had just started third grade. I had other friends
(35:49):
that had the same haircut as me, and I remember
telling my friends, Yo.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
When we get home from school today, he Man debuts.
Speaker 2 (35:58):
And I remember Rich being on the phone with one
of my best buds, my little grade school buds on
the phone like it's gonna start you watching, and we
were so pumped. And everybody remembers the first time they
heard this.
Speaker 1 (36:13):
You're like, oh, Man, listen, you're a little older than
me there, buddy boy. But he Man that if you
watch the toys and the shows that made America, those
great History Channel specials, yeah, you realize that he Man
was not supposed to be this big hit. They they
(36:34):
scrambled to make this a hit because everyone's loving it.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
Yeah, well, the backstories were so great. Adam Prince of Eternia,
he was your favorite, Rich, Your favorite was.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
Finish, though Pristo was great.
Speaker 3 (36:49):
Had the secret power.
Speaker 15 (36:52):
The day I held I think stink or I don't know,
but I had them all and I would have them
all set up and they were cool toys.
Speaker 2 (37:03):
But when that cartoon debuted. It only aired for like
two years, but I loved it. And if you remember
the premise, you would well, they would always teach you
a lesson at the end of the cartoon, but you
were supposed to find orco throughout the each episode.
Speaker 1 (37:16):
You remember that there's supposed to find ork O. You
know what now that I think about it was Shira
might have been my first crush. And I love how
Skeletor lives on in meme forma. That's the best.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Yeah, til next time, till next time.
Speaker 1 (37:30):
That's the best.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
So yeah, I do remember that as a little kid
on a throwback Thursday when that happened. I'll throw out
another one that has to be just on the list
of memorable because everybody talks about it, and anybody that's
into music, you hear the same story over and over again.
My life changed and music changed and everything changed. The
(37:53):
day the Beatles made their American debut on the Ed
Sullivan Show, you hear everybody talk about how what a
life changing, impactful event that was.
Speaker 1 (38:03):
Oh, I thought you were gonna say when Klake and
debut on American Idol, No, that was that's on my list.
Speaker 7 (38:08):
But I thought you were gonna go Michael Jackson moonwalk
on the Motown twenty five.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
I was an impactful moment for sure. The debut.
Speaker 3 (38:16):
Yeah, for a lot of us as little kids, that
was the debut for us.
Speaker 1 (38:19):
For mind, just listen. It wasn't the debut with Michael Jackson,
but then he che's right view of the moonwalk and.
Speaker 2 (38:24):
Of his molwalk, Yeah, of his mid block, and we
were like, whoa was he floating?
Speaker 1 (38:29):
What was that?
Speaker 7 (38:30):
And for years we tried to do it, and kids
still try to do it today, still try to do it.
Speaker 2 (38:35):
But yeah, the Beatles made their debut I believe on
the Ed Sullivan Show in nineteen sixty four. If I'm
not mistaken, but you just hear so many people it's
as if I've heard Ozzy Osbourne again.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
He was in England.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
But Ozzie said that he felt like life was in
black and white and then all of a sudden was
in color once he heard the Beatles, Like everything changed
once he heard the Beatles, and once they were introduced
to America, music change, life change, pop culture changed. That
was a debut, dude, debut that changed our culture. So
your most memorable debuts, of course, you could include sports
(39:13):
because this only comes up on a throw back Thursday
because of Babe Ruth.
Speaker 1 (39:17):
Well, I have a couple of baseball ones. I'm a
couple of sports ones, and then some movie ones. If
you want me to just zip through these, well, can
I say this one? Because I know you're gonna forget.
And we were both there the debut of Brock Purty
your boy. We were there, down, you were there. I
wrote it because we were there.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
In his diary, we were.
Speaker 1 (39:38):
It's not in my show notes, it's it's in my
diary spots, right, That's why it's Well, can I take
you through that day? Cavino and I met a couple
buddies up in the Bay Area. I'm a big Niners fan.
It was Dolphins Niners, and when you're at the game,
you don't get the coverage you get when you watch
on Fox or CBAH. So we're like, Yo, did Jimmy
(39:59):
g heard? Is he sick? What? What's doing? Is he
out of the game for a play? Is it a series?
Is he done? What the hell is going on? You
aren't hearing anything in the stadium. And I remember thinking
Rock Party, Who the hell is this guy? Brock Party?
And then when you got the news that Garoppolo has
done Cavino and I remember where we were. We were
at a steakhouse and I was sort of like Poudy
(40:21):
Battle Goose, the ployoffs are not who cares? And then
brock Party just decided to shock everyone. And for the
last two years now he's uh, you know, living up
to every expectation I've had at least.
Speaker 3 (40:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (40:34):
I mean, but I'll never forget it because I remember
that day so clearly. We were there so impactful and
memorable to us, and it's a name we haven't stopped
talking about since. So I think everybody can relate to
some degree.
Speaker 1 (40:49):
Now when there's talked about players Cavino, where you know
they're going to be the man or the woe man.
Sometimes they are a little flat. I'll give you two
flat ones.
Speaker 11 (40:58):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (40:59):
When men Yama that I was like okay, there was
no like wow his debut. Caitlin Clark, her first game
was like turnover, yeah, yeah, Lebron. If you want to
look back, Lebron scored twenty five in his first game.
Here's one that lived up to the hype. Before there
was Paul Skeens, who would you say might have been
one of the most anticipated pitchers in baseball. He won
(41:22):
a World Series, got hurt a little much, but uh, sale,
who you know Strasburg? About Strasburgh, Yeah, okay, Strasbourg was
the most anticipated picture of a generation. His first start,
seven innings, fourteen strikeouts in the win.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
See now, yeah, if you were there, you'll never forget that.
You'll never forget that if you were there, if you're
a fan, And that's what we're getting that your phone
calls eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox eight seven
seven ninety nine on Fox, and at Covino and Rich
at Fox Sports Radio. I'll give you another one that
I remember too, just based on the hype. I was
working in rock radio early in my career. Hey, Rock
(42:00):
New York, and there was talk of a super group.
Not the Proclaimers, Rich, I know, they're one of your
favorite supergroups, but an actual so an actual supergroup.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
Meaning that was that when you were gonna leave Menudo
for Gotsmack.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
No a super this is a super duper group. And
the talk was it damn Yankees.
Speaker 2 (42:22):
No, the members of Rage against the Machine are joining
forces with Chris Cornell of a Sound Garden, And you're like,
what for me as a rock fan. Yeah, So for
me as a rock fan, I'm like, this is incredible.
I can't wait to hear this. And I'll never forget
their debut because it was on the marquee of the
Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City. I believe it
(42:44):
was in two thousand and two. They performed on a
mark I remember seeing the marquee and then performing and
I'm like, wow, this is them for the first time.
And you know, at the time, I wasn't that thrilled.
But from today's perspective, I just wish we had more
of that because I really enjoyed it.
Speaker 1 (43:01):
What was that called the end? Was that a audio slave?
Audio slave? Yeah? I was gonna say audio What was
Temple of the Dog? What was that?
Speaker 2 (43:07):
Temple of the Dog? Was Eddie Vedder?
Speaker 3 (43:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (43:09):
Hunger Striker, Yeah, Hunger strike Yeah?
Speaker 7 (43:12):
Good, I got one. Can I do a music one
really quick? Please do Danny okay TV? And it's related
to hip hop. You know, in nineteen ninety it still
was not normal to see hip hop stars all over
TV and movies. They were still breaking into that genre
and crossing over. September tenth, nineteen ninety NBC debuted the
pilot episode for The Fresh Prince of bel Air.
Speaker 1 (43:34):
And I remember me.
Speaker 7 (43:35):
Yeah, I remember me and my friends getting ready for
it because we saw the commercials. We had our VHS
tapes ready taped it, watched it over and over. It
changed TV as far as the way we know. That's awesome,
man to get a hip hop. I do remember this.
Speaker 3 (43:49):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (43:49):
You might have to look up the year, but I
remember watching when Leaders, when Bust the Rhymes and Leaders
of the New School made their debut on The Hall Show. Yeah,
and you know that's when Bust the Rhymes became a star.
I remember watching that because I like the tribe called
Quest and they performed scenario.
Speaker 7 (44:06):
So yeah, Ursinio and NBC with a Fresh Prince of
bel Air really changed the game as far as rappers
on TV.
Speaker 1 (44:14):
Yeah, that's cool. And there is a great story, Danny g.
You should look it up on Instagram or TikTok when
you get a chance. It's the story of how Will
Smith had wrote the theme for Fresh Prince in West Philadelphia,
Ball and a raised Yah and Jazzy Jeff. Jeff was like, yo,
you got to give that to Quincy Jones, who was
(44:34):
supposed to write the theme for the show, and apparently
Quincy Jones legend he just put together some cheesy sitcom
intro and Jazz actually encouraged Will like, I know it's
Quincy Jones, but you got to tell him you have
something better, and he finally had the huevos to be like, yoyo, Quincy,
can you listen to this? And Quincy's like, oh yeah,
(44:55):
this is way better than the trash I put together.
So we almost didn't have that theme.
Speaker 7 (45:00):
And that chiev show would not have hit had it
not been for that opening theme song.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
Hey Rich, that's the most popular? Is that the most
popular theme of all time?
Speaker 2 (45:07):
People say that's the most popular rap song of all time?
Speaker 1 (45:11):
I'm not even I'm not kidding.
Speaker 4 (45:12):
Because everybody wide known, worldwide, everybody knows it, and those
the words to it.
Speaker 1 (45:17):
It's a it's an argument that people.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
Do have yeah that or rappers delight.
Speaker 2 (45:22):
Yeah, Hey Rich, weren't you there for the debut of
Dunk the Clown or some famous wrestler because I remember
you telling.
Speaker 1 (45:27):
Me about that. No, he's just my uncle. I have
I have one that you're it's such an obvious one,
but we're gonna forget it, so I want to throw
it out there now. Debuts, that's what we're talking about
because it is the anniversary of Babe Ruth's first game,
George Herman Ruth. Arguably, you know, people say the closest thing,
Oh Tani right, there's never been anything like the Babe
(45:50):
Babe so Babe. It brings up what were the best debuts.
We're talking music, we're talking sports. In the world of
acting in movies, we forget sometimes that Matt Damon and
Ben Affleck came out of nowhere with Goodwill Hunting. These
are two just Boston Jabbroni's that were like, hey, we
made a movie and got Robin Williams to be in
(46:10):
it and the rest is history. Like, we forget sometimes
that Matt Damon superstar. Matt Damon and Ben you know
j Lo's like soon to be ex husband. We're just
dudes in Boston that made a movie, a script that
didn't really get much of a great reception when it
was in film festivals.
Speaker 2 (46:27):
I think they both got three hundred thousand dollars each
when all was said and done. They bought jeeps, Let's
be honest. They were pumped about it. And no one
had heard of him. That was their debut Good Hunting,
Matt Damon, did all have you lifting on that movie?
Let's be honest.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
But that wasn't Ben Affleck involved with Kevin Smith, Like
he was in a few of the Kevin Smith movies
in the early nineties, but like.
Speaker 1 (46:46):
Not really a huge star.
Speaker 2 (46:48):
He was just part of those those ensembles, right, But
this was like their they want Academy Wars for it.
Speaker 1 (46:54):
Yeah, yo, spot a guy that you loved. He passed away,
but he was in the Harry Potter World but also
die Hard Apparently. I just saw this that Alan Rickman's
first role was Hans Gruber. Was Hans Gruber.
Speaker 2 (47:07):
Yeah, whathy scene that was his debut.
Speaker 1 (47:11):
Talking about coming out swinging, huh, Like, I'm sure I
aw my detonatus.
Speaker 4 (47:15):
I imagine he's British, so he probably did a lot
of theater because they all do theater. But yeah, I
think as far as movies go, that was his first role, okay,
and his debut to us. Right to be fair, I'm
sure he was an actor and acting before that. So
Rich we got a lot of phone calls all school
and fifty hits. We like to reminisce on a Thursday,
(47:36):
throw it back and get you involved.
Speaker 1 (47:38):
I know it's a dumb answer, Cove, because there's gonna
be someone like, well, he was in like a soap
opera or something. But when you think of like McCauley
culkin just home alone right out the gate with I mean,
I'm sure someone's gonna say he wasn't a toy commercial.
But you don't think McCauley culkin out of nowhere just
was in everyone's lives in the nineties.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
It's funny you say that. But Jack Black, his actual debut,
I'm pretty sure was a Pitfall commercial. And he's talking
about Pitfall Harry or Harry or Larry. I forget Pitfall Harry,
but again on this date, nineteen fourteen, the Babe was
a winning pitcher in his debut. He's nineteen years old,
(48:19):
allowed eight hits, two runs, one strikeout, didn't walk anybody,
but the Red Sox beat Cleveland, So famous debuts. Want
to start with Trip. Trip's been on hold for a minute,
So thank you Trip, Thank you guys for holding Trip
McNeely in Vegas?
Speaker 1 (48:34):
What up? Trip?
Speaker 8 (48:35):
What's going on? Gentlemen?
Speaker 1 (48:36):
Anybody? Hey?
Speaker 8 (48:37):
You taking my call? Hey, uh, I got two one.
Nineteen eighty seven, I was at the We were there
to see Motley Crue, Girls, Girls Girls, and never see
an opening act. This band comes on stage opening Man,
this guy's dancing around acting crazy. Were like, who was
this guy? Turns out it was Guns N' Roses. Wow,
And I'm like, I'm being on the East Coast. We're like,
(48:57):
we didn't anything about them. I was like, it was
And then the second one would be I was eighty
five or eighty seven, but I'm at a South Carolina.
I went to South Calina, but where all the home games.
All of a sudden, the opposing team is going nuts.
When the punt returner comes out is Dehon Sanders and
he returned it for a touchdown. That's when I learned
about the unfenders.
Speaker 1 (49:18):
That's awesome. Yeah, when you talk about debuts, Cavino, do
you remember because this guy was on the Blue Jays,
so you probably saw him play your Yankees a few
times former New York met and Blue Jay. I didn't
even know if he's in the big leagues anymore. Do
you remember the name Steven Matt's pitcher.
Speaker 2 (49:34):
Yeah, of course.
Speaker 1 (49:35):
He had all these high hopes like he you know,
he came out swinging, you know, his first game, seven
and two thirds, six strikeouts, the win. And he also
this is when pitchers were hitting in the National League.
He got four RBI in his first game, like he
had a few hits and he just he lit it
up on both sides. Everyone's like, who is this kid?
Speaker 2 (49:54):
Those are those magical moments when someone makes their debut
with a home run. I love those moments. The family's
their first pitch home run. Those are great moments, memorable debuts.
Let's talk to Tom in Vegas. Tom, you're on the
show Covino and Rich.
Speaker 12 (50:11):
Hey, how you guys doing good?
Speaker 10 (50:12):
Man?
Speaker 1 (50:15):
I got two Actually, can you turn your radio down
for us please? Oh sure, thank you, thanks, Bud Okay,
I appreciate it. He's listening to us very attentively.
Speaker 2 (50:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (50:27):
This is uh this, Yeah, I am this is this
is this is born in Vegas here and it's not
a successful one. But Chuck Finley with the A's, he
drafted a kid out of Vegas here.
Speaker 8 (50:37):
I think Mike Morgan in the mid eighties.
Speaker 12 (50:40):
Took him right out of high school, put him on
the mound, and he got shelled. I can't remember what
year it was, but I know it was in the eighties.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (50:47):
You know what, it doesn't always have to be sunshine
and rainbows to make it memorable, right, Like sometimes a
miserable debut could be memorable.
Speaker 1 (50:55):
Speaking of Vegas, I mean, can you know when you
were a little kid, weren't you there for the first
ever Lion teams by Sigfreed and Roy True?
Speaker 4 (51:01):
Yeah, yeah, I was a little kid. I was excited
you were there, I know.
Speaker 1 (51:06):
Yeah. Well I got tickets because they're your uncle's right. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:09):
Yeah, So Kevin and Florida, you're on the show, Cavino
and Rich What up?
Speaker 13 (51:14):
Kevin, Hey, guys, thank you, love your show.
Speaker 1 (51:18):
Thankky.
Speaker 13 (51:19):
My favorite living guitarist and band Carlos Santana at Woodstock
nineteen sixty nine and wow?
Speaker 1 (51:28):
Now is that? Was that one of the first times
he was sort of introduced to the mainstream with Santana's
sort of debut at Woodstock?
Speaker 13 (51:34):
Is it so?
Speaker 1 (51:34):
That's awesome?
Speaker 13 (51:35):
Yes, he'd been putting them one real quick note. I
saw him five times, but I saw him at the
the Fox Theater in Atlanta, where I grew up. And
you can't do this anymore, but This was June first,
nineteen eighty one. I hid in the seats of this
beautiful theater and I looked up and this is my plan.
(51:57):
And it worked out. There was nobody there. I ran down,
jumped over the orchestra well through the theater the curtain
by the bandstand where all the instruments still stood by
the other curtain, and I just waited, and I knew
it was a god thing. And here comes Carlos and
the local Atlantic concert promoter, and I got both of
(52:18):
their their signatures on my ticket step, which I still
have on a nineteen seventy two album poster. You know
how they used to come with posters.
Speaker 1 (52:30):
Yeah, you did that. If you do that today, you
would have got taste. And I would love to see it.
I'm kidding. Yeah, but you can't. You can't be pulling
those function aigans like back at the day comte. Oh.
Speaker 2 (52:40):
Look, there's so many expectations on a debut, even as
a broadcaster, Rich, like when we made our debut at
Fox Sports Radio. There's always those butterflies, right because you
want to make it count, you want to make it memorable. Rich,
And I like who cracked the mic first?
Speaker 6 (52:56):
Me?
Speaker 2 (52:56):
Or you Oh, that's a good question, right. There's always
that feeling of like, ah, here we are, right, is
that weird expectation and we're talking about it. Going to
take your phone calls to wrap it up. Memorable debuts
because on this day, one hundred and ten years ago,
the babe changed history.
Speaker 1 (53:22):
Yeah, oh, no.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
One lonely Steve e ib all by myself with that nobody.
But then I see Rich Davis so out there in
New York, and I remember, oh, it's Capino and Rich
on Fox Sports Radio. Got Profet on the ones and two.
Is he like mixed master Mike Profet. We got DNYG,
we got Low and chron we got Rich in disbelief?
Speaker 1 (53:47):
What do you own knowing about? Because I watched the
Biden clip you.
Speaker 2 (53:50):
Told me about, Dude, that is like so bad, right, We.
Speaker 3 (53:58):
Mix names up sometimes on our show.
Speaker 1 (54:00):
Not like that.
Speaker 2 (54:02):
I don't want to be presoner of the moment either,
but that just seems really bad.
Speaker 3 (54:06):
Sometimes he'll say, Russell Westbrook.
Speaker 1 (54:14):
Yeah, I know what happens. It does you called the
Netflix show receiver receiver? Same same mistake, right, same mistake,
same impact.
Speaker 2 (54:23):
Yeah, Which, by the way, let's get off that we're
Cavino and rich In ten minutes over promised begins. So
set up Fox Sports Radios YouTube page and join us live.
We're gonna talk travel, sports and NFL celebrity fans and
more over promises our bonus podcast. I watched both Hard
Knocks Episode two and Receiver on Netflix, and I enjoyed both,
(54:48):
but I like Hard Knocks better. I'm only one episode
in there.
Speaker 1 (54:52):
I got a yeah.
Speaker 7 (54:54):
It's because usually Hard Knocks will look into different players
on the two teams, try to find a player or
two that has a really good standout personality. Because this
coverage for offseason started in January, which is not normal
for Hard Knocks. It's like being a fly on the
wall with the executives in the front office to see
(55:14):
what moves they're making. So it's less about the players
and more about the team and what's how the team
is going to be built.
Speaker 2 (55:21):
They're both great, right, You agree with that, Danny g
It's so funny. It'll get you fired up and hype
for football. Rich As, I know you're already hyper football,
but some about Hard Knocks, just the way it's done,
I think I enjoy a little more right now. But
I'm only one episode in on receivers, so enjoy that.
And I don't know if you want to wrap it
(55:43):
up with your final thoughts about the Cam Newton wedding story,
the Christian McCaffrey Cam Newton story.
Speaker 1 (55:49):
There was a thought I had there and I had
a pizza question for you. But if people don't know
what we're talking about, when we were alluding to the
Biden thing, politics aside, vote for whoever the hell you want.
We don't care, it's up to you. But he was
introducing President Zelenski of the Ukraine of Ukraine and he goes,
I'm gonna hand it over to a guy with as
much courage as the determination as anyone. Ladies and gentlemen,
(56:12):
give it up for President Putin.
Speaker 2 (56:15):
And then then he does the recovery where he's like,
what I mean was?
Speaker 1 (56:21):
I mean that guy's on my mind. We got to
beat him.
Speaker 2 (56:24):
So anyway anyway, Yeah, just thinks I hate it. So
Cam Newton was on his own podcast talking about how
he wasn't invited to Christian McCaffrey's wedding and then that
posts so many questions. I know one of those questions
we didn't get too rich was are you allowed to
(56:47):
bring or invite somebody if your significant other hadn't met
that person yet, would you like to explain, because Olivia
Kolpol had an issue, right.
Speaker 1 (56:55):
Yeah, she didn't let her sister bring some new dude
she was dating to the wedding. And I know we've
had friends have different stances on this, Like listen, if
I don't know the person, you can't invite them, Like
you could bring a boyfriend or a girlfriend. But yo,
you just bring in a flavor of the month to
my wedding. If I've never met this girl, dude, like
just come to the wedding or some people say, well,
(57:16):
do you want me to have company at your wedding?
And I don't know.
Speaker 3 (57:20):
That's tough.
Speaker 2 (57:21):
That was a science story. And then another wedding related news.
I saw this post that wide receiver Mike Evans was
ready to propose to his wife and he was so
nervous about it that he used to practice proposing to
his teammates on the sidelines during practice. Like that sound
(57:43):
nervous like he would practice it all the time. That's
another story. It was double practice for him, double practice.
So rich, how did you do it with a ring pop?
Speaker 15 (57:52):
Right?
Speaker 1 (57:53):
Yeah? I proposed, and this is before it was trendy.
I did this like a long time ago. My wife said,
I don't care what ring you get me, like I know,
I didn't truly believe it, but she said, you can
even get me a ring pop. So I attached the
real ring to a ring pop and I knew she
would ask for the shrubbery ring pop. I'm like, oh,
here you go. I picked up some ring pops at
the store, and when was the last time you saw those?
(58:13):
And toada, So I got to ask you if you
were to ever pop the ever pop the question, buddy boy, Yeah,
would you tell us first or would we find out
with everyone else?
Speaker 3 (58:22):
Today is your anniversary Covino?
Speaker 2 (58:24):
Yeah, no, I would do it the same way I
did it the first time, just on the sly.
Speaker 1 (58:28):
I won't tell anybody. Hope you wouldn't mind marrying me
too much?
Speaker 2 (58:31):
Yeah, I would say what Rocky bout Boa said, I
hope you don't mind marrying too much. I'd be there
with mister Tiger. Nobody else.
Speaker 1 (58:40):
They're gonna call Macho man, will you marry me?
Speaker 2 (58:45):
And since it's getting late, Rich, if you guys want
to share how you proposed by all means please do
or maybe we'll talk about it on over promise, but
hit us up at Covino and Rich. We also talked
about major debuts. Ian told me coincidentally, Ian in the
Office said that today, thirty years ago today Rob.
Speaker 1 (59:03):
Parker made his radio debut. Wow, I saw that. I
congratulated him.
Speaker 2 (59:08):
So how cool is that?
Speaker 1 (59:10):
Rob Parker?
Speaker 4 (59:10):
Total coincidence by Rob Parker. One last thing, I'm a woman.
If you're going to propose to someone, please know that
the answer is going to be yes.
Speaker 10 (59:20):
Like.
Speaker 4 (59:20):
I don't think anyone should propose with like not expecting
to receive a yes answer.
Speaker 1 (59:26):
Pro spot. I love you for saying that. Nothing bothers
me more when someone says, what do you think she's
gonna say? That's like the one question you don't ask
unless you know the answer. I know, right.
Speaker 2 (59:36):
So Hey, guys, been a fun week.
Speaker 1 (59:38):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (59:38):
If you missed anything, catch our podcast search Covino and
Rich wherever you stream it, send it to some friends, follow,
rate and review, and join us on our bonus pods
starting in six minutes on Fox Sports Radio's YouTube page.
Speaker 1 (59:49):
One last question, Yeah, rapid Fire, what's the limit of
slices of pizza before you're glutton.
Speaker 2 (59:55):
I don't know, tell me five ten. That's that's what
I'm going for.
Speaker 1 (59:59):
We'll see you there, you, maybe you and the over
Promised Land. Let's go.
