Welcome in side our two Cavino and Rich, Jason and
Mike in for the guys today. Back to our show
tomorrow night. After Mike and I both out on and
off for vacation the last couple of weeks. Yeah, very exciting.
When I left, the Mets were good.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
I'm back. The Mets are still good. Everything is wonderful.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Well, you lived to the All Star break right, It's
been a bit of a roller coater for you. Meanwhile,
mine is nice, a nice long how should.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
We say it?
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Flat line?
Speaker 4 (00:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (00:48):
No, dude, yeah, yeah, not flat line.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
No, it's a flat line.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
No, it's it's very difficult.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Hear the beep in your head as you I say that.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Well, look before we get to the big unmasked that
I'm telling you about in a second with the home
run derby tonight and we got the starting lineups and
that it's American National League. Earlier, Dan Byer had him
in his update a few minutes ago. You know, this
is a missed opportunity for Major League Baseball, okay, because
you have Paul Skeen starting the All Star Game. That
(01:18):
has He's Steven Strasburg two point zero, Strasburg Mania, Skeens Mania.
He's as big a must see player in baseball since
Strasburg came up fifteen years ago. And it was, oh
my goodness, how many strikeouts were Strasburg. What's it gonna
be for him? It was, you know, Fernando mania in
the eighties, then we had Strasburg Mania. Now we got
(01:39):
Paul Skeen's mania. Right, he's starting the All Star Game.
We've talked about him. What an unbelievable player he already is.
You're the American League, okay, you can really help out
Major League Baseball by saying, you know what, let's just
put Gunner Henderson, Juan Soto and Aaron Judge up one,
two three in the first inning again, Paul skeins and
(02:01):
let's let people no, no, no, but we're gonna put
Stephen Kuan in.
Speaker 3 (02:03):
The leadoff spot.
Speaker 1 (02:05):
So maje hit let's go.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
But Stephen Kuan is not Henderson, He's not Sodo, He's
not Judge.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Just think about Yes, maybe he gets to.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Face all four of those guys, those three guys in
the first top of the first inning. But think about
what what a push that would be for two days ago.
Man Skens is gonna get Henderson, Sodo and Judge in
the how's he gonna do? I mean, this is like
All Star memories that are just waiting to happen, Like
I what you get? Can he strike all three guys out?
He's gonna throw one hundred and five miles an hour?
(02:34):
Can arry is Aaron Judge gonna take it deep? But
it's different when it's okay, we're not batting. You know,
these guys aren't batting one, two, three, like I get
the quant hitting three.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
But it's in All Star game.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
You can hit him fifth if he wait, doesn't matter.
You don't need to hit him first. How about you
do something a little bit for the game and go
all right, and then we can have two days of
lead up to Skens with Henderson, Sodo and Judge or
Henderson Judge.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
However you want to do it instead.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Oh yeah, we're gonna hit Stephen Kwan first and then
if he gets out of the first and that might
be it for him. Maybe he doesn't even get to
face Aaron Judge in the second inning, because is he
really gonna go two winnings?
Speaker 3 (03:07):
You going to throw more than that? Like how do
you not do that? Like? How do you not take
advantage of that and go?
Speaker 2 (03:12):
You know, this is something people really want to see,
So let's do it.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
No, no, no, I'm gonna.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Put this line up together and have a guy in
three fifty four, Like I get it in a perfect world,
but it's a bleep and all star game, Like how
do you not do that?
Speaker 3 (03:22):
I don't understand.
Speaker 1 (03:23):
We are no longer in an era where this time
it counts, So let's play it for the exhibition that
it is. I mean, come on, let's lean into it.
Thirty two thousand, two hundred and one. Remember that Paul
Skene's Sho Heo Tani showdown right struck him out the
first time and then the home run thirty two thousand
(03:45):
to one. That's the number of tops Now cards that
were sold in a twenty four hour period to commemorate
that showing how big and grandea and it's a terrible picture.
They really chose a terrible photo. But the point is
that people jumped up on board to celebrate this grandiose
matchup against this highly heralded youngster. Everybody's already photo shopping
(04:09):
him into Dodgers and Yankees gear, which is really kind
of funny, but against Otani and so so, why not
lean into it and go the other side? Yeah, hey,
I get it. Quand's fantastic, great defender, gold gloves, hitting
three fifty two. He ain't game game going up there
swinging for the downs, trying to challenge the eater. Come on,
(04:31):
give us something, give us some juice.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
I mean, it's not a playoff game. It's it's it's
it's a game for the fans and play How do
you not do that?
Speaker 3 (04:38):
Really?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
It baffles me that. Come on, Bruce Bochi. Men, you
got your hat sizes like eight and four quarters, I
mean three quarter? Come on, you gotta figure out. Yeah,
it's gotta be you know, with big heads are really smart.
How do you not do that? Come on, man, how
do you not? I mean I'm hoping that maybe he
changes his mind between the you know, we're gonna do this.
We're gonna do it, and I gotta say, people get it,
but how do you not do that? I mean, I mean,
(05:00):
I really this is it's such a huge moment that
we may not even get like, like I said, we
may even get him facing Sodo in the set. Is
he gonna go really go two winnings or not? I
By facing Judge, is he gonna go? We may even
see it, Like, how do you potentially not see that
as a thing that could really help the game?
Speaker 3 (05:17):
I really it baffles me.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
This is where Rob maffety steps in and go, hey, sorry,
but I'm gonna change your lineup. It's like Billy Bean
in Moneyball, Billy the lineup's mind. Yeah no, I'm saying
you just you can't start paying you at first because
he plays with the Tigers. Now, like this is where
Rob manforth to day, Listen, you can't you can't bat
Stephen quand first. Why because I threw him off the
All Star team. You have to you have to bat
Gunner Henderson first, Ago Anderson, Soto and Judge. You gotta
(05:41):
do it that way.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Well, but there's a report from Bob Nightingale that he
you know, they were preparing maybe to start Chris Saale
and then he ended up pitching on Sunday. But the
thing Nightingale reported was that Major League Baseball and Rob
Manford might have actually been proactive and said, hell, no,
Skins is the starter of this. So you know, at
least it appears now he got saved by the fact
(06:04):
that he didn't actually have to make a choice. But
you know that schemes will actually start sail back after
all the injuries. Former White Sox legend then bounced around
and now suddenly he goes to Atlanta and tunnah, he's
great again.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
Good for you. Something that's real. I don't I get.
I don't get it. I don't get how he doesn't
do that. But you know, hey, whatever, what do I know.
I'm just a guy that's like, hey, this would be
a great moment for baseball. No, I'm going to rob
you with that.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
Okay, great, thanks.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
Hey Kwan is hitting three point fifty two, No celebrated
guy that actually puts the damn ball in play in
twenty twenty four, because that's surely a problem across Major
League Baseball.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
I mean really, I mean, but like I said, what
do I know? But speaking of things, I do know
after this weekend, Right after this weekend, I now can
tell you for certain what all the WNBA, Caitlyn Clark,
Angel Reese, what all the hate is really all about.
(07:10):
Right this weekend specifically brought it home, for why have
things been so weird with this rookie class coming in
and Caitlyn Clark not really being accepted as well, someone
who's bringing levels of acceptance and notoriety of the game
that we've never seen in twenty five years. Right when
this all happened in the beginning, I remember, Look, we
(07:32):
told you on our show it's going to calm down.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
Eventually.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
People are going to get past the whole Caitlyn Clark. Okay,
it's going to combat will be about basketball. But for
all the controversy that was thrown out there that it
was about Caitlin Clark because she's white, Yeah, okay, not really.
Caitlyn Clark's you know, she's heterosexual and the league is
very high amount of lesbian relationships. Yeah no, not really.
(07:56):
This is now after this weekend, you can tell this
is specific about the jealousy that the people who have
been in the WNBA have against this rookie class. Because
now it's not just Caitlin Clark, but it's Angel Reese. Right,
what do we see on Saturday? Right, Angel Reese has
had the double double streak all the way through. It's
been a big deal for her. Right set a WNBA
(08:17):
record for a double double streak. Now, is that a
really really big deal of double Okay, you know it's
not like she's scoring twenty eight points a game. She's
shooting less than forty percent from the field, but she's
pulling down a lot of rebounds.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Right.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
Sure, she had a couple of Rickey Davis moments in
this process.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
But lots of lots of like four misses and four
offensive rebounds.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Wow, or you're you're down the stretch and calling for
the ball in the final seconds of a game because
she had she's had chances. Can't says she hasn't had chances.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
So so here's the thing, is that the final possession
of the game on Saturday against the Liberty, when they
were losing, they got her the ball so she could
get her double double.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Because you know, Angel.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
Reese's look, I told she's got the biggest e of
anybody in sports. Like she talks about I'm setting records.
I'm setting records. I'm setting records. They give her the
ball to get that bucket to get to ten, and
four Liberty defenders swarm her so she can't and she
has to throw the ball up into four other players
are standing around the arc going because they gave it
to her just to keep the streak going. Which I
(09:18):
get it, you're looking for something like that. You want
to you're losing the game by ten points. You're not
gonna happen. But they, the Liberty did not want her
to get that. When in the NBA, it's gonna be yeah, whatever,
we'll let you. We'll let you score a oh, by
the way basket with ten seconds left. We don't really care.
But they put four players over, so you know that
was a directive. We do not let her get this double.
We do not let her keep this double double streak. Right,
(09:40):
big time rookie. Then you add the Caitlin Clark situation yesterday,
after Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever wind up with
a big win over Minnesota and Team USA head coach
Cheryl Reeve, right, you now know, without a doubt, Cheryl
Reeve just hates Caitlyn Clark and is jealous of the
sixth says that she's bringing to the league. You had
(10:02):
the tweets from the beginning of the season when Cheryl
Reeve was upset that only the Fever game was being
shown opening night. Why aren't the other games being shown?
And that's a WNBA's fault. I've said they need to
be able to handle success better. But they put the
Fever on obviously because it's Katelyn Clark with people who
want to watch. She's upset that her team didn't get
on and she responded to tweets about, hey, we're more
(10:23):
than one player. You know, We're an entire league and
we're more than just Caitlin Clark. So you already know
there's a little bit of backlash with Caitlin Clark in
her popularity. After the game yesterday which Kitlyn Clark had
a really good game, they closed out a win, Indiana's
playing well, she was asked following the game about not
(10:44):
taking Caitlin Clark on the Olympic team and what Shoe
Reeve felt about that. When she was asked about that,
she said, why the hell would I answer a national
team question. I'm wearing links and I'm the head coach
of the national team, but I'm not the chair of
the committee. Anybody want to venture into anything else, right, Like, WHOA,
how about you just say, hey, Caitlyn's a great player.
(11:05):
We have a lot of great players, and she'll have
a great career. She'll play in a bunch of them.
But we took the best players now. No, Instead, she
wanted to be snippy about a question about Caitlyn Clark.
She also has asked about the crowd, Hey, what's it
gonna be like being a pro fever crowd because Caitlyn
Clark travels. Oh, I don't give two blanks about it,
not even one blank. No, I don't even give one blank, right,
Like she was really crazed before the game about how, Hey,
(11:28):
Caitlin Clark, I don't care about the fever crowd. Why
would you ask me about her place on the on
the on the USA Olympic team when clearly they could
have taken her because Team USA has taken the number
one pick in the draft the last five Olympics to
get her a little bit of exposure as one of
the next players that's going to carry the league. They've
done that, but they didn't take Caitlyn Clark here. After
(11:48):
the pregame yesterday and seeing shaw Reeves comments, I know
she can't stand Caitlin Clark, can't stand the attention that
she's getting. Is never gonna pick her for the Olympic team.
She tried to walk it back a little bit after
the game was over, after the fever one and she said, Hey,
we understand that Caitlyn's popular and that's why she's bringing
these crowds here, but it doesn't matter. You can tell
here's the coach a Team USA who is basically saying,
(12:10):
I don't like the Caitlin Clark effect. I don't like
what she's bringing, and you can tell she doesn't like her.
You could tell you there's no way she's gonna pick
her for the Olympic team, and she could have just
if you don't like it, that's fine. But the out
and out hatred that I have seen people say about
Caitlin Clark, and this is a coach that's got no
bearing on any It's not like she and Caitlyn Clark
(12:31):
have gotten in a feud. It's not like Kaitlyn Clark
has gone on bad mouthing her all She's ever said
about the Olympics is boy, it's a great honor. I
hope one day to get there. But the hatred and
the jealousy that has come out, now, you know, that's
the number one thing. It's about the old guard and
the players and the coaches who have been in the
league for a while. Oh, all of a sudden, now
these players are gonna save the league. We've been here
(12:53):
for a long time. I understand that, but these are
transcendence stars coming into the game except them. So that's
really now, you know what it's all about. The race stuff,
the sex stuff, that all takes a backseat to this
because now you can tell with what happened with Katelyn
Clark and the Angel reached this weekend, that's what this
is all about.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Yeah, I mean you go to Angel rees, I mean
opportunities to get to her ten point threshold. She missed
a wide open layup in the game against the Dream
and then you know, was calling for the ball, ended
up getting fall and got her shot. And then back
to back games against the Liberty and they just said,
all right, we're done with this. Because again it's about narratives, right,
(13:31):
it's you know, becomes the talking points for everybody. You
got a hero, you got a villain. What do we
always talk about the you know you need those in
that battle. But Katelyn Clark, they said, the combined attendance
home and road for the the Fever is already over
four hundred thousand, which is a w NBA record as
we get to the break. But you know that's the
(13:52):
first meeting with Minnesota, so the first time Caitlyn Clark's
been able to go and show Coach Reeve, hey, this
is what I can do. I could have brought this
to your squad. You had a pro Indiana crowd there
quite obviously a little bit of mean mugging at the
end and fist pumps, so you know one of those
you'll you'll get it back in the process. But overall, look,
(14:15):
my analogy to all of it has been I can say, hey,
seven o'clock, a party starts. I can't get mad when
people show up at seven point thirty, right. I can
be anxious and for that half hour, I can grumble,
I can fidget with whatever I've had catered or whatever
I've cooked or whatever's going on there. But once people
get there and I'm gonna be like, no, screw you. You
didn't show up at seven o'clock. Get out of here,
(14:37):
beat it. Who needs you? No, I'm not going Sandler.
I'm opening the door saying, hopefully you brought me a
bottle of wine or something. Let's get it on. Come on.
So that's what you'd love to see for the rest
of the WNBA, you know. But as the promo says,
pettiness knows no tax bracket. And then we'll add the
(14:58):
caveat or age.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
But I can see I could just see you at
the door though, someone showing up at seven to thirty,
you saying I said seven, not seven thirty, and you
slamming the door in their face.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
Well, you do know me pretty well. There's public consumption
Harmon and then ah, there's didn't grumpy old troll under.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
The bridge, exit out bouta Fresca exit, swollen dome.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Jason Smith, Mike Harmon in for Cavino and Rich coming

through some sort of adversity to get to the top.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
We've all used different tools.
Speaker 6 (16:55):
Listen to Unbreakable with Jay Glazer and Mental Wealth podcast
on iHeartRadio, app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get podcasts.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Fox Sports Radio Jason Smith, Mike Harmon in for Covino
and Rich Today. And before we get to the biggest
controversy last twenty four hours, just a little more information
has come in about the All Star Game tomorrow, and
really it makes zero sense.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
I mean, I don't know what the hell Bruce Bochi.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Is thinking not batting Henderson, Sodo and Judge one, two
three in the batting order against Paul Skeens. Right, Paul
Skeens is much a must see player in baseball that
we've seen since Steven Strassburg. And now you're looking at
a scenario in which Skeens might not even face Aaron Judge. Right,
how do you not have Sodo and Judge being the
(17:44):
top three? Because Tory Lavello just put out a statement
saying that likely Skeens, even if he gets through the
first inning unscathed, is not gonna pitch the second inning.
Lavello says, quote, we got eleven to twelve pitchers to
get through. It's the hardest part of being the manage.
You're trying to get every pitcher in the game. So
even if he has an easy one two thriller, whatever
kind of ending he has, he's not gonna face Aaron Judge,
(18:07):
How are how how is? I don't understand how this is?
This is a scenario that we're not gonna get to
see what everybody is. Everybody was foaming at the mouth
to see sho Heyo Tani in the in the World
Baseball Class against the best players, and and and Otani
and Mike Trout in the in the championship game before
last year, and it was such an amazing moment.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
How do you not see this? How do you see? Hey?
Speaker 2 (18:31):
You know, by the way Skeen's in, Judge, I think
a few people might want to see that at bad Oh.
Now we might not get it unless somebody gets on base. Now,
somebody could get on base. I'm not saying they Can'm
not saying you're talking about the best players in the
American League and a batting leader, you know, leading off
and Soto and but look, baseball is a game of failure,
you know, I mean the best guys are are gonna
get out seven out of ten times. Skeens could get
(18:53):
out of the first inning, and we might not even
see Skeens and Aaron Judge, I just missed opportunities. Always
baffle me that that nobody can see that. And it's
something Bruce Bochie should have seen. And and and it
may maybe he changes things and talks to Stephen quant
and says, look, dude, sorry, I'm gonna move you up
a little bit. Or Gunnar Henderson going to move you
down to fourth and move so to and Judge up.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
These are guys are.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Gonna play it an inning or two anyway, so it
doesn't matter. And and and yet where we could not
get a moment that everybody would want to see.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
I don't understand, I understand how that happens.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
I would just say this, you know, for Skens, you know,
you either want to get over by striking out the side,
waving the hat, here's the fox, cut over to Livy
Dunn who's cheering for him, and we move on, or
you drill Kwan, you know, and you've outfitted him with
the Bond's armor before the game, just knowing there's the
base runner you needed let's go. I see what I did.
(19:49):
I probably I solved your problem? You did?
Speaker 3 (19:51):
No, you did? You did. We're just gonna walk the guy.
We're gonna walk, and we're gonna walk.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
Him intentionally or we're gonna drill him.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Joyce here is Hey Skens is out there for the
second aim to face Judge, but they just bring him
out for an intentional walk and he just walks off
the field.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Right.
Speaker 2 (20:04):
They give the sign to go down to first base,
Sken's tips his cap and walks off. Here comes a
new picture.
Speaker 1 (20:09):
Get it round. Judge comes up to the plate and
he goes full you know, WWE mode with the camee,
you know, Michael Keaton against Jack Nicholson and the U
with all the original villains in the nineteen eighty nine Batman. Right,
we can go with that and have the uh yeah,
come on kind of moment and then it would go
(20:30):
viral and everybody would love it. So, you know, either way,
you gotta hype this up. I mean, come on, we
haven't had a picture that you're excited. You keep mentioning
Strasburg and yeah, it was some of that, but with
the pace and the torrid run that Judge had here
these last couple of weeks, like how do we not
get that? And see if we can't get a clash
(20:50):
of the Titans kind of moment.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
I mean, I'm hoping I'm helping us. Putting it out
here now and talking about it is gonna make it happen.
Speaker 1 (20:56):
It does seem that, you know, information we put out
here for free does find its way across oh, with
great rapidity and quickly and quickly.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
Not not like one of those uh no, no, it gets
it quickly.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
I mean maybe Bruce, but I mean, look, when you
have a hat size it's like eight and a quarter,
you're a pretty smart dude.
Speaker 1 (21:13):
Had a big head. You got a brain working in there.
Trust me, I know, I know that curse Bochie, Like.
Speaker 2 (21:19):
Like I feel like, okay, Boche's putting out a lot
of it. Okay, this is the best line of stuff.
But guys are coming in and out of the game
after an inning, and I this is like, what do
you you get a bad guy's If you're batting guys
one through nine in the first thing, what are you
worried about?
Speaker 3 (21:31):
Because you're scoring seven runs, You're gonna win the game.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
And like I said, this time, it doesn't count. If
we still had that in effect, then then sure, okay,
we've got it. Well play it straight. You're not playing
it straight. You'd give that guy four innings if you could,
the way he's mowing people down, right, and you're a
starter on the other side. So yeah, it's uh, it's absurdity, is.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
The one thing.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
What would you really like if you said to anybody, Hey,
what would you want seeing this all stary?
Speaker 3 (22:01):
I want to see Skens in Judge?
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Okay, great, Yeah, I'm gonna throw it out there that
it might not happen. Why because I'm the manager and
I make a stupid decision. That's Bruce Bochi.
Speaker 1 (22:09):
Well, but we're I mean, we're putting his name in
our mouths, so I'm in good strategy by him. Hey,
remember who the manager is over here. I'm in charge and.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
Stephen Kwan doesn't. Hopefully Stephen Kwang is hey skip, look,
I know, I know, I'm in three fifty. That's fine.
You could put Judge up or Gunner. Henderson says the
same thing.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
Hey, you can, you can, you can, you can move,
but you can move me down and I'll clean up.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Yeah, but Gunner's new here. He wants to get his
his cracks and he wants his notoriety, right, Okay, yeah,
but neither of them are Aaron Judge. I mean, hey, no,
we got thirty eight new All Stars.
Speaker 3 (22:42):
Yeah, and a lot of them is.
Speaker 1 (22:43):
Trying to figure out how to make their name.
Speaker 3 (22:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
But I mean there's there's guys and then there's Aaron Judge, who's,
like I said, we talked about him last hour, he's
going to go down having the best year in baseball
in the last fifteen years by an offensive player. I mean,
it's gonna be be that big. That's the kind of
year he's gonna have, the numbers he's gonna end up,
and the and the absolute Q rating he has with Judge,
(23:09):
with with with what people feel about him, when people
know about him, and and you're you're not gonna have
a chance where you can see schemes and Judge, really,
you really not gonna do that?
Speaker 1 (23:18):
Next man up?
Speaker 3 (23:19):
Really? Come on?
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Uh? Well, I mean look, oftentimes, like we get stuff organically,
you know so often, right, great moments in sports. We
talked about the Jacoby Jones uh return in the you know,
to start the second half, go back, you know, across
all sports, we have these big moments. Here's one that
you could pretty very very easily manufacture for us. Give
(23:43):
us what we want, damn it.
Speaker 2 (23:45):
Yeah, like I said, it's an All Star game.
Speaker 3 (23:48):
It's not.
Speaker 2 (23:48):
It's not here. You are you are? You are ruining
the sanctity of that it's an All Star game.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
I mean, I'm not telling him to go up there
and throw an Epis pitch.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Yeah, the judge hits for six here, get to you up.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
Let me hit this one there. Judge gonna be like
a cricketeer. I'm gonna run in and throw it on
a bounce.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
And that would be stylistically a new way to go
about things.
Speaker 3 (24:10):
Oh boy. Uh.
Speaker 2 (24:12):
But we got that big controversy that people are just
taking really too much coming up in about ninety seconds.
But first, Dan Bayer has what's trending in the wide
world of Sports dB.
Speaker 3 (24:24):
What do you got for guys.
Speaker 7 (24:26):
Clipper's president Lawrence Frank speaking on Kawhi Leonard being taking
off Team USA's basketball roster for the Olympic Games. And
Frank had this to say to reporters today about whose
decision it really was.
Speaker 5 (24:37):
It was usab's call, and I was quite frankly very
disappointed with the decision.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
I wanted to play.
Speaker 1 (24:43):
We wanted him to play.
Speaker 4 (24:44):
I was there the first two practices.
Speaker 7 (24:46):
He looked very good participant, was a full participant in
everything that they did. So there was no setback from
knee injury that costs Leonard the end of the season.
But again he was replaced on Team USA by Derek White.
Team USA, by the way today top to Australian exhibition
hoops ninety eight to ninety two Anthony Davis seventeen points
and fourteen rebounds in that pre Olympic tune up. News
(25:08):
just in as the president of the Colombian Soccer Federation
Ramon Jes Roumin, along with his forty three year old
son and now facing three felony chargers after allegedly fighting
security guards at the championship game last night at hard
Rock Stadium in South Florida. You guys are talking baseball, yep.
Corbyn Burns of the Orioles named the All Star starter
for the American League and Tomorrow's Midsummer Classic that you
(25:29):
will see on Fox tonight. Of course, the home run
derby in Arlington, Texas. SO newsrom College football and Fresno
State head coach Jeff Tedford, stepping down after two seasons
because of medical reasons, led the Bulldogs to Bowl games
in both of those years. In his second stint as
head coach, assistant Tim Skipper will take over on an
interim basis, and apparently all is goodnob between the Lions
(25:50):
and Calvin Johnson. The team will be enshrining him into
their Pride of the Lions at halftime of their Monday
night game against the Seahawks on September thirtieth. So the
Hall of Fame wide receiver getting more recognition from his
time in Motown. Guys, back to you.
Speaker 3 (26:04):
Thanks a bunch of DV. I'm glad. You know, I'm glad.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
At least you know the Lions can look back and say, okay, well,
Barry Sanders, boy, we kind of screwed that up. Boy,
Calvin Johnson, we kind of screwed that. But not after
after a long time has gone by, Hey, okay, we.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
Can start to embrace our guys again.
Speaker 1 (26:18):
It's okay, commerheads, some different people in management, all of
those things. But you know two things coming out out
of Dan's update number one with Lawrence Frank. When your
last name is Frank, can you can you use quite frankly?
Is that a little too on the nose when you're
quite frankly? I was upset, all right, So we got that.
You have to pay Stephen A.
Speaker 3 (26:37):
Smith. I think I think he's still off the rights
to quite frankly.
Speaker 1 (26:40):
I wonder, yeah, trademarks and all of those copyrights and stuff.
The other is, when Burns is on the mound, if
he gets two on a hitter, does the broadcast booth
got advantage boos?
Speaker 2 (26:53):
If they're smart, they do? I mean fox property baby,
Come on, you know someone that can do good Smither's impression. Sir,
you're a head zero and two on a battle. You
might want to throw a ball here. I'm gonna throw
one right down the middle, not what he's expecting. I
will strike him out O that bow? Is it five
hundred and seventy five feet? Excellent?
Speaker 3 (27:13):
Because I bet I bet on the other team. I'm
making money, smith Is.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
We spent last hour talking a little bit about euro
and and as much as we're worried about the United
States soccer, look, Spain's gonna win the World Cup in
two years. Their young team is outstanding. They're the best
team in the world. They would have wiped the floor
with Argentine.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Yeah, but you're now going between you know, US men's
national team and is there a you know, even in
hope with a small h versus Yeah, they're gonna keep winning.
Speaker 3 (27:43):
Yeah, but look it's like, hey, hey, we're pretty good.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
We're a top fifteen team, we're a top twelve team
getting no, no, you look, Spain's gonna roll.
Speaker 1 (27:51):
Do we get in the algorithm? Does that mean population factors.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
When you take a look at the population compared to
what these But the.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Reaction coming off of Copa America last night, which you
watched Argentina win defeating Columbia.
Speaker 3 (28:08):
It was a rock fight right like.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
It wasn't aesthetically pleasing, it was just, you know, okay,
an okay game. The game was delayed for a while
because fans rushed the gate to try to get into
the stadium at hard Rock, and it was really rough.
You saw some of the pictures after a elevator escalator
was just absolutely destroyed and fans were insane and it
(28:33):
was a really really bad optic. And the big question
coming out of this was, wow, hey can we can
we really have? Are we ready for the World Cup?
Are we ready, We're ready for and I'm seeing this
and I go wait a minute, wait a minute, wait
wait wait wait wait wait.
Speaker 1 (28:47):
Hang on.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
We have the Super Bowl every year, we have the
World Series, we have NBA Finals, We have arenas that
are filled with with fifty We have college football games
on Saturday that have one hundred thousand people showing up.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
We pull these off all the time.
Speaker 2 (29:02):
Okay, Now, we had a situation where soccer fans from
other fans of other countries decided to rush the gates
to get in, and suddenly, oh, hey, the United States
canna handle the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (29:14):
Hang on a second.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
We seem to handle all the other things pretty good,
right with all the other fans coming in. So now
we just know that we have to handle things a
little bit differently because fans from other countries are gonna
try to do things like rush the gate and try
to get in and be upset when they can't get
and they're gonna destroy things. Okay, we put on big
events all the time. We put on Super Bowls, we
put on national championship games. If we do it all
(29:38):
the time, yes, so just a great optic. No, did
it look great? That hard rocker? We looked like it
was destroyed. You play a bunch of upset fans. No,
but this is a situation where we're gonna learn from
this and we get that. Okay, next year, we need
more security. We need situations where all right, hey, this
team and this group of fans, we gotta watch out
and make sure we have more people on site. It's
(30:00):
going to be fine. The World Cup is going to
be fine when it's here. We'll be fine putting on
the World Cup. We do stuff like this all the time.
What we saw was for Copa America at this point,
we saw Argentina fans go crez. Look it happens once
in a while. But you see soccer fans, you understand that. Hey,
soccer fans different countries gotta there. You think we're passionate
(30:20):
about sports, they're crazy passionate about it. Okay, now we
know that maybe in a couple of years, just a
little bit more security, a little bit more holding people back.
We learn our lesson. But to sit here and go
are we ready for the World Cup?
Speaker 3 (30:32):
What are you insane? I mean real real?
Speaker 2 (30:34):
Yeah, No, we can't the United States, we can't handle
the World Cup. We gotta let it go. Splay. We
gotta put it in rickety stadiums, and we don't know
if they're going to stand up right because they could
collapse because we don't know if that can work. Let's
give the World Cup to countries where that's what we
worry about.
Speaker 3 (30:47):
Everything is going to be fine.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Yes, bad optic at hard Rock Stadium, bad in the
game had to get postponed for a while.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
But this is really overblown. I'm pretty sure we're going
to be fine for the World Cup.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
It struck me as a teas for the next segment
on Inside Edition, are we gonna be ready for the
World up next? You know that kind of thing, And
you show some footage of people up against the fence
and look, I watched a lot of the videos. You know,
guys that were clamoring to get in. It's like I
paid two thousand for a ticket, and the way you
(31:22):
couldn't funnel security and they were overrun funnel through security
should say overrun in the gates. And there's got to
be a complete retrofitting and understanding of how you do
crowd control, because the big thing here is, even if
we handle big crowds with great regularity, Jason, you don't
often have thousands of people that don't have tickets that
(31:42):
just say, to hell with you, I'm going in. You
got gate crashers. And we've had many stories through the
years that guy that kept getting in at Super Bowl
and all that. So like that's the bigger thing is
trying to figure out, you know, how the best way
is and best practices. You got two years of international
played and friendly and everything else to go and watch
around the globe before you have to host it. So
(32:04):
get ready for a lot of retro fitting in terms
of stadium gateways, et cetera. As it goes forward. Will
it be handled fine? Sure? Does it lead you a
little bit nervous again, owing to the fact that most
people are standing in line playing, you know, heads up
or whatever. Those things are passing the time, and then
(32:25):
when they get there, hey, here's my electronic ticket. It's
not hair. Here's a thousand jackasses that have decided I'm
crashing the gate. See if you can stop me, or
I'm gonna go through a vent I mean, come on,
next level stuff out of there. And then evidently you
had folks from Columbia ahead of the Federation at all
and his son that were detained after kind of battling security.
(32:50):
Like there's a lot of stories that fell out of this.
It's just a terrible look. But you know what, you
can stress test all you want. That was the website
of your choice when tickets went on sale for your
favorite show right there.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
And really have all the Cojing points you just made
right there. I just went back to thinking, how did
I not come up with the idea for heads up?
Like how did I? I mean, that's like the I mean,
how did I not come up with that? Like that's
like right in my wheelhouse all trivia and and and
sure race.
Speaker 3 (33:18):
How did how Ellen DeGeneres is making millions and millions.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Of dollars, like there's lots of app now she's from Yeah,
I know she said, I'm done.
Speaker 1 (33:27):
I hate I know.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
I'm like, you hated me.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Well, now it's reciprocated. You'll never see me again.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
I really should have come up with heads up. You
know what, we'll spitball some ideas.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
We'll put another whiteboard in the studio when we get
back at it tomorrow night. We'll roll from there.
Speaker 2 (33:42):
Here's the new one. It's called heads down. Well, what's that?
That's when you put your phone down and go to sleep.
Oh I like that app.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
That's a good one. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:48):
We play very soothing music and you get to go
to sleep. It's heads down like that, uh exit out
about a Fresca exit swollen dome. Jason Smith, Mike Harmon
in for Cavino and Rich. Coming up next. Team just
had their latest win over Australia in a big Olympic
tune up, Way Doll, we tell you what superstar should
(34:09):

for our six straight gold medal. That's next right here, Jason,
Mike and for Stephen Creno and Rich. This is Fox

From Fox Sports Radio. Cavino and Rich, Jason Smith, Mike
Harmon in for the guys today. We're back to our
show tomorrow night after Mike and I'm making our trips
to the United Kingdom and back over the last couple
of separate vacations.
Speaker 3 (35:28):
Separate vacations.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
Yeah, you went full on spell spell Binding Adventures and
I went and saw a lot of shows.
Speaker 3 (35:36):
Yeah, we went.
Speaker 2 (35:37):
We went on a Harry Potter tour of England, United Kingdom.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Big and our family.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
You went because you're a swifty You and your whole
family are swifties.
Speaker 1 (35:45):
Differents, my daughters and I, my brother pulled off the
impossible given resale laws in Ireland, so I'm indebted to him,
his coworkers, et cetera. But we pulled that off, and
then I went and saw the Abba Avatars. That's how
we're gonna survive in radio for the next one hundred years. Smith, Okay,
we're gonna get Bjorn and Benny to work on that
(36:07):
technology and we're going.
Speaker 2 (36:09):
Wait doesn't wait wait wait, didn't Bjorn just buy like
the rocks to all the Kiss songs. That's right, three
hundred million dollars. This company just bought that.
Speaker 1 (36:17):
So somewhere else, either State Side or London, they will
also build another arena for them. It's an incredible.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Yeah, I'm gonna buy all the Kiss songs. Oh okay, great,
I have them all.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Well, now they live forever, right, So they'll develop the
same technology and you'll see holographic Gene Simmons tormenting you
for years.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
Kiss is gonna now start redoing old Abba songs. It'll
be great jee. So that would be something stomping in
packets of blood, singing Waterloo.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
And he and then he mixes in a little I
was made for Loving you. You get that baseline going,
come on now.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
So, the United States just finished a pre season or
LIMB big tune up win over Australia in Abu Dhabi.
Record crowd of twelve thousand fans at the arena in
Abu Dhabi, second straight win over a metal contender for the.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
United States ninety eight ninety two. Yeah, okay, Australia is
not bad.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
But still, this all star team that the United States
has put together for the Olympics, they didn't look great
in the trenches, didn't look great in the paint. And
I'll tell you what you heard Dan Byer mention it
a few minutes ago in his update where he's that
you could see the importance of Anthony Davis to this
team what he was able to do across the board
(37:38):
for the United States night right eighteen minutes, seventeen points
and fourteen rebounds. And defensively, you know what kind of
big time superstar.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
Game he made a bunch of stops.
Speaker 3 (37:47):
He was great, I'll tell you man.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
And after seeing their first couple of games, there is
no one who deserves less minutes than Joel Embiid. Yeah,
like to the point where I don't know that they're
a better I think they might be a better.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
Team with him off the floor.
Speaker 2 (38:03):
And not just means Joel Embid's a bad player, but
Joel Embiid knows one way to do things. I try
to do crazy things offensively. I'll do things off one
leg try to get to the free throw line. My
effort isn't always there. My effort defensively isn't always there.
I struggle shooting free throws because I'm out of breath
running up and down the floor. Embiid's game doesn't really
(38:25):
translate here, right, Yes, teams shoot a lot of threes
in international play, but you need to be able to defend
down low. This is not Embiids, this is not his
forte And I think you saw the fact that he
played the fewest minutes of anybody today tells you that
maybe this is the way Steve current team USA is going.
I mean, if you're trying to win, right, you still
(38:46):
need You still need Halliburton, who's your only true great
point guard on the roster.
Speaker 3 (38:49):
For some reason, you say, no, we don't need Jalen Brunson.
But that's fine. I'm okay with that.
Speaker 1 (38:53):
You know you need to there's the name. It took
almost two hours.
Speaker 3 (38:57):
I'm saving Jaylen Brunson for the rest of the week. Man,
I'm saving.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
That statute of limitations past.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
But you but you still need. You still need your
guys to hit from the outside. You need Jason Tatum.
I get it.
Speaker 2 (39:10):
But for dob when when you get into the interior,
you need guys who are gonna make sure you're difference makers.
And Joel Embiid's just kind of a guy in international play.
Speaker 3 (39:21):
It's just not that way.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
And you and you see that his game, it has
the as good of a player as he is. You
see the way he tries to play, right, I'm trying
to get to the free t I'm and try. That
doesn't translate in international basketball. And and for sixty for
Joel Embiid to go for sixteen, yes he had fourteen
and sixteen minutes. Yeah, this is where you gotta rely
if you're going down low on Anthony Davis, you got
(39:44):
to rely on bam Adebayo, who's gonna pull down a
lot of boards and play tough down low. These are
the guys you gotta rely on. And it's not that
they're the you know, they don't need to always be
the best players international basketball, but you need to have
a team where things fit. And Embiid, now this is
a couple of games in where I go. Man, they
might be better off without him if he doesn't play. Now,
it's an insult to him because you picked him for
(40:04):
the team. What do you do not play him? But really,
I don't know, They're not a better team if he's not.
Speaker 3 (40:08):
On the floor.
Speaker 1 (40:09):
Sixty eight points in the paint for the Australians there,
So you look at that and you know the back
cuts and the shifts and everything that went on against
You know, Davis held his own and made a couple
of big plays when they needed But yeah, it's the
flow is different. Obviously you go back the first game
and be the falling out. It almost looked like he
(40:31):
tried to fall out of that game. He was gone
so quickly, but eighteen turnovers, like there was a lot
of sloppiness. Steph Curry wasn't very good. So you take
some positivities from Booker and from Anthony Edwards and certainly
Anthony Davis, but yeah, a little bit concerning when you
got the big men and you got other big men waiting.
I mean, one of the notes that you rack up
(40:52):
there and certainly shown on the telecast, is that you
had Nikola Jokic sitting there watching like he was clubber
Lang during Rock three when Hulkogan as Thunderlips was fighting
Rocky Balboa, looking all dissatisfied that you're ducking me. Well,
that's the guy he plays next. I don't know if
he walked off as disgusted as Clubber did, but certainly
(41:14):
with what Joellenbii's doing, he's licking his chops. If that's
the effort he's gonna provide again, Well, did he pick
up Rocky and throw him into the crowd? I mean,
if you saw that, I mean, if that happened, I mean,
it's gotta be worth it.
Speaker 3 (41:24):
You want to see that a little bit? Why not?
Speaker 1 (41:26):
It kind of felt like it, I gotta say, though,
you know, as bulls guy, whatever Josh Giddy is in totality,
I don't know, but he looked pretty damn good today.
Speaker 2 (41:37):
Exit out about a Fresca exit swollen dome looking for
our best of.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
It goes up right after the show is over, about.
