(01:24):
So guys were in for Colin and actually probably while
they were on air, we did get resolution to a
story that I think everybody had. Well, we've all been
waiting for it. I don't know that it was that surprising,
but you know, you host on Sundays with Dan Byer
host on Saturdays, and this past Saturday, we're Jason Martin
and I my Saturday partner, were coming off right after

(01:47):
the Steelers Lions preseason game, and I bring it up
because Mike Tomlin said, Hey, we don't need to name
a starter yet. I believe the I'm paraphrasing the quote,
but he goes, we got another week of Steelers on
Steelers before we figure out who's the quarterback. So don't
know how intense the practices were this week, but the
news does come down just a few hours ago, Justin
Fields will not be the starter. Russell Wilson, the veteran

(02:10):
who you know, he has been starting the preseason games,
did lead a touchdown drive in their most recent game,
has been named their starter Week one. Your reaction to
just the big picture news, then we'll talk to about
the big picture what all means for the team.

Speaker 5 (02:24):
Yeah, no surprise that they went with the veteran of
Pittsburgh Steelers teams that has been you know, hovering around
five hundred right in the playoff mix for the last
three years or so. And you know they're not gonna
want to go with the I don't want to call
them a project, but it would be a project situation.
It's a new situation, new team, and you know, for

(02:46):
him to be thrown into that thrust, thrust into that
position to be the guy that leads that team that's
pretty veteran, lated would be would have been a little
bit of a shock. I personally would have probably gone
with Fields. I think he has the more upside and
could you know, possibly be you know, more than what
they bargained for at this point. But right now, going

(03:06):
with going with Russell Wilson's the safe bet. You know,
Mike Tomlin fits that bill a little bit.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
So what I find interesting about this, and tell me
if I'm crazy.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
So you use the word project with Justin Fields, I
think that's probably the fair and accurate thing to say.
What I find interesting is I get it right, is
this is the time of year where all thirty two
teams think they got a shot. We got an opportunity
with this that the thing with the Steelers that's unique
is obviously look very tough division, very tough schedules.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
So I do think if you believe that Russell.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Wilson is the better quarterback, I don't have a fundamental
issue with saying you're the starter, right. I guess where
my issue comes in is this is that Justin Fields
is on the final year of his rookie contract. Obviously
they can do the fifth year option whatever. But I
bring it up because it's like all of it is
just an interesting scenario because Russell Wilson's a veteran, but

(03:58):
it's not like he's been with the organization and you
have equity with them and you don't want to put
them on the bench because you've been with them for
fifteen years and you want to show respect to him.
So you don't have that, but you also don't have
that much time with Justin Fields. And that's what I
find interesting is if you're the Pittsburgh Steelers, you bring
in Justin Fields because you kind of want to know
if he's your future. And so I look at the Steelers' schedule,

(04:23):
as I mentioned, it gets pretty tough on the back end.
They start with at Atlanta, at Denver Chargers, Colts Raiders
early in the season, middle of October. So there's a
scenario where you know, Kirk Cousin's coming off the injury,
bo Nick's a rookie quarterback. Justin Herbert, we don't really
know what his status is with the foot I mean,
we think he's gonna play, But you get the point. Yeah,

(04:43):
they could start four and two, they could start five
and three, and it's just this weird thing where it's
like they're not really a contender, but they might have
a good enough record where they're in.

Speaker 2 (04:55):
The mix, but they won't really be in the mix.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
And it just to me feels like it's going to
be a slippery slope and kind of a tricky spot
to kind of just figure out, Okay, if we do
want to give Justin the chance, like when do we
do it? Because there's a chance that they're not terrible
to start the season.

Speaker 5 (05:11):
Yeah, even with what you're just saying right now, I
see a scenario where they also can be two and
four and one five.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Oh sure.

Speaker 5 (05:17):
And so, like I mean, Denver is supposed to be better,
the Coats will be better this year as well, barring
Anthony Richardson's taking a step back. But I mean, all
these games are hard in the NFL, and so you
can't really call it. I agree with what your take was,
but there's also the flip side of that, right, So,
say they start slow, dustin fields will be in early Yeah,
And so I think they've seen enough in practice to

(05:40):
know what they have now. Game time is different. But
a coach like Mike Tumlin that puts a lot of
stock in practice, he's going to have to prove it
there first. And I think that's probably what we're kind
of missing or glossing over here, is they've seen enough
of him to know what they have. They want to
go with the proven person that has a little cachet
and I'm sure the cash it matters a little bit here.

Speaker 1 (06:01):
Do you think that you know, you mentioned all the
practice stuff, do you think that's a variable from the
perspective of you know, you do have a lot of
vets in that locker room.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
That to your point.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
I mean, you know, last couple of years whatever it is,
nine and seven, nine and eight, ten and seven, a
year ago, made the you know obviously, you know, made
the playoffs, lost the bills of year go. So I
just bring it up because do you think that's part
of it is you got vets in that locker room.
Justin Fields may have the higher upside, but you know
that Russell will and it becomes almost a slippery slope

(06:33):
with your own locker room of if we go with
the young guy, then it looks like we're maybe giving
up on the season if for Russ has been better
at practice, Yeah.

Speaker 5 (06:40):
That's that's the point. And also a team like Mike,
like the Steelers with Mike Tomlin, he's such a good
coach and such as competitive coach for them going into
Winny season thinking that you're gonna tank or not try
to win, of course isn't isn't gonna happen. So if
the Steelers really want to get to a point of
solving that quarter back position for the long term, they're

(07:02):
going to have to have a bad season here, sure,
and Mike Thomas not the right guy to have if
they want that to happen.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, And I guess I'll just be curious because again,
and by the way, to your point, like, yeah, they
could be two and four, but then if they're two
and four, then it makes the decision to go to
Justin Field's easier. Yes, what I'm saying is what if
you're four and three and Russ is completing sixty three
percent of his passes and you know he's not really
the answer, but again, you're trying not to give up
on the season. So you said, you said it earlier.

(07:28):
I think we all agree Justin Fields is a project.
I mean, you know, it's again a weird situation where
you know, he wasn't great in Chicago, but he won
some games down the stretch. Just what do you make
of him kind of big picture where he is?

Speaker 2 (07:43):
What do you like?

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Cause again I would guess at some point he is
probably going to get a shot, And just curious for
your perspective on what he could potentially be, what he
might not be.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
It's it's a it's a very funny thing because I
think he's really talented he's just not polished enough. And
then you go from a couple of systems having new
coordinators in Chicago, you go to another new coordinator here
in Pittsburgh, and so there's just no.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
We don't know what we have and I don't think
they know.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
So like there has to be some time and some
equity put into the actual progression of what he can
be and what his game can be. And so we
just it's a big I mean, the biggest question mark
you can make.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
That's just him.

Speaker 1 (08:25):
Sure, yeah, and what is what is the process in
your opinion for Mike Tomlin? I mean, obviously again if
it goes really well five and so let's say, yeah,
you start with the Falcons Week one, Okay, Kirk Cousins
coming off an injury. Maybe you get to win there,
Broncos Week two road game.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Whatever.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
The point I'm trying to make is what if you
are And by the way he played, he played the
NFC East as well, So by the end of October
you also got the Giants and you got the Commanders.
I'm a Jayden Daniels guy, so I think they could
be good, but they, you know, still get a rookie quarterback.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
So what do you what do you think the.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
Process is of how much wiggle room do you give
Russ before you actually pull the plug and let you
or does it all just depend on what's going on
in practice.

Speaker 5 (09:05):
I just I think it depends on the flow of
the season as well. Right Like, if he's playing like
he played in Denver last year, I thought he was
playing good enough for them to make the playoffs, and
they were down the stretch right in the playoff mix,
that situation soured. I think coming into that season the
coach didn't even believe in the player anyway, and so

(09:28):
the first sign of anything faltering, he was gonna pull
the plug, right, And so that's what happened there. I
think with Mike Tomlin, the guy that again wants to win,
I think the least will be a little bit longer
than that. So I think he's gonna have a chance
to actually prove himself this year. And I don't think
you go to justin fields unless the season is over.
At this point, if you're going to make the decision

(09:49):
to start Russ, I don't think you bring him in
just because you're in a rough patch. I think you
got to ride out Russell.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
So two quick thoughts on that. Then, One, it is
kind of funny you look at at the RUSS stats.
I'm not saying that he was great last year, but
sixty six percent completion percentage, twenty six touchdowns ATDs now,
to be fair, you know, just over three thousand yards passing,
so under seventy yards per completion. You know he's not
chucking it downfield. He's not Mahomes or Alan or whatever.

(10:16):
He wasn't terrible though, and so like like what are
you of the belief just having watched him knowing the
sport better than the rest of us, Like.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
Do you think he's toad?

Speaker 1 (10:25):
Because there is this narrative that like he's totally cooked,
he's a placeholder You're gonna go to Justin Fields eventually.
Maybe Justin Fields is the guy, Maybe he's not. Whatever,
do you think Russell Wilson's totally done? Do you think
there's any way that he plays well enough where maybe
he is the answer a little bit longer than just
a eight to twelve game window this.

Speaker 5 (10:40):
Year, I think there's a scenario where that happens. That
doesn't mean he's playing for four or five more years. Yeah,
I don't think that. But when you talk about a
two year window where you can still get some Russell Wilson.
I guess some Russell Wilson magic. I don't know what
that even means anymore. But if you get some Russell Wilson,
cook cook right. I didn't go that dispatchel from a

(11:00):
little I did not go that far. But Russell having
two really solid years is not out the window and
not out the question.

Speaker 1 (11:07):
Let me ask you a question. I don't know if
you have any thought on this or you can't comment.
Why does everyone hate Russell Wilson so much? Like like,
it's just it's unbelievable to me and I've I've obviously
never been in a locker room with them, and I'm
sure you know guys that have, and certainly not asking
for any insight that you can't share, but it's just
because it's weird, because it does feel like him and
Tomlin kind of have a vibe. Like Tomlin's spoken very

(11:28):
highly of him. I think that they they have a
pretty good relationship. I can't speak to him with the Steelers,
but as you said, Soward really quick with Sean Payton,
although to your point, I don't know if Sean Payton
ever even gave him a chance. Obviously soward with Pete Carroll,
and we've obviously heard the you know plenty of former
teammates that have had their own thoughts on him as

(11:48):
they've kind of transitioned out of football. What do you
make of why maybe that that people just scar Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, a lock of dynamics are weird.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
You come in as a third round guy, a guy
that I'm sure worked his butt off early on to
get that position, gets thrown into the fire. Team starts
to win. Quarterback position is glorified no matter what. So
you look at that team in particular, with all the
names and all the players that they have, sure ego

(12:20):
come into play. That's really all it boils down to.
Because when they were winning, none of this came out,
of course. So then when you have a little a
couple of losses, one guy doesn't want to be there anymore.
Some this guy doesn't get paid. It's just a lot
of situations that could happen in that in that locker
room with the dynamics. So, you know, Russell Wilson getting
allowed the credit for those teams winning, I think it's

(12:42):
fair that the other players could have a little bit
of a little I don't want to say animosity, but
a little bit of an edge against him for getting
some of the some of that special treatment that he got.
So I think it just comes down to ego and
players wanting their fair due of the of the credit.

Speaker 2 (12:58):
Interesting.

Speaker 1 (12:59):
Yeah, well it's interesting because he did make the playoffs
his first five years in the NFL, which is kind
of kind of crazy to think about. But to your point,
it was a defensive led team. It's whatever, And it
was actually when they let Russ cook that that was
when all the problems started. But for people who are
joining us, Russell Wilson has been named the start of
the Pittsburgh Steelers. Last little thought from you, Carrie is
how do you think this ends this season? In other words,

(13:22):
does Russ make it all seventeen games? Does he make
it twelve? And they flipped to justin fields. Does he
make it three? And it's a debacle in it because
you said, you know, you said, like real, if it
goes well, could have a could have a little you know,
a short runway here of a year or two.

Speaker 5 (13:38):
How do you think it ends up? It's not gonna
end well well for the Steelers. But I don't know,
if it's going to be Russell Wilson's fault. Sure, there
is a tough division, they're not going to make the playoffs.
I don't feel personally it's just too top heavy. I mean,
Baltimore's going to make the playoffs, Cleveland's going to make
the playoffs, and Cincinnati's going to possibly make the playoffs. Right,
so or any combination of those three right teams is

(14:00):
not going to make it. So unless unless an injury happens,
which we're gonna not go wouldn't hope it doesn't, they're
not going to make the playoffs. So it's gonna be
you know, Russell Wilson, if he plays very very very
very good solid football, you won't be able to put
it on him. And I think that's the possible outcome,
the best possible outcome in this situation.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
Let me ask you one last question on this. So
we're entering the twenty twenty four season. He said it
best Russell Wilson has two years and that justin Fields
is a project that does have upside.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
Yeah, do you believe.

Speaker 1 (14:35):
It's hard to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers starting quarterback
to open the twenty twenty sixth season. So three openers
from now, two calendar years from next Sunday, do you
believe that person is on the roster right now?

Speaker 2 (14:49):
No, Okay, nope.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
They didn't give Justin Feels the chance this year, in
a new year, in the fresh year. He's not going
to be there in two years, in two years.

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Well, and that's that's well.

Speaker 1 (15:00):
And that's why I'm not surprised because again, hosting on Saturdays.
I've listened to the last two Mike Tomlin post preseason
game press conferences and it felt like this is where
it was going. But I just don't know why you
bring in Justin Fields on the last year of a
contract if you're not gonna throw him out there to
see if he could be. But then again, it's tough.
And listen, I'm far from you know, Mike Tomlin's won

(15:22):
a lot more football games than I have.

Speaker 2 (15:23):
Believe it, sure, how many?

Speaker 1 (15:24):
How many you got you got, like, I mean, well,
we want a little bit in high school, you know, No,
bigd I wasn't coaching. I mean I was on the
field making plays, sir. But but yeah, no, he knows
more than I do. But it's just like I said,
it just feels weird that you bring in Justin Fields
last year of a rookie deal and you basically again,
he might get run, he might not, and then you know,

(15:45):
God forbid he doesn't get run. Russ is good enough
goes nine and eight, you know, not really good enough
where not really bad enough where you can pull him, and.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
Then Justin Fields goes somewhere in Essex. Aaron.

Speaker 5 (15:55):
But the one thing we haven't talked in this discussion
so far is he's gonna have He's gonna have a
couple of packages in these games.

Speaker 2 (16:02):
He's gonna play.

Speaker 5 (16:03):
Yeah, And early on in the preseason, before the preseason
in camps, he was flirting playing other positions.

Speaker 1 (16:09):
So don't forget about Oh so we're talking the Terrell
Prior route. Okay, there you go, all right, Insider Carry
Carry Rhoads here as has the insight on Justin Field's
future All Pro wide receiver. You are you are the

really exciting. I'm so happy. But you know what I'm
especially happy about. We got Coach Prime year two prime time.
I gotta hear your thoughts.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
I love Coach Prime and I can't wait to see

for the break, talked talked that Mars's a big day.
So today is Wednesday, Tomorrow is Thursday, that's usually how
the calendar works. But this Thursday is a little bit
different because college football Week one is officially kicking off Saturday.

Speaker 2 (18:56):
Last Saturday, we had.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
Week zero four games. It was fun Florida State Law.
But the big boys all kick off this weekend, and
of course two headliners on Thursday night, the first night
of this long weekend. The first one, obviously is the
game that is on Fox as Minnesota is hosting North Carolina.
You could catch that at eight pm Eastern on Fox.

(19:18):
But the other one, it is year two of the
Coach Prime era North Dakota State at Colorado. Coach Prime
joked at Big Twelve Media Days that his ad Rick
George didn't know him any favors. North Dakota State is
obviously a very storied FCS program. Carson Wentz went there,
Trey Lance went there, Easton Stick went there, among many others.

(19:39):
Just big picture. I'm curious, you know, first of all,
do you ever relate do you know Dianna and all?

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Yeah, yeah, oh I knew it. Yeah, of course, yeah.

Speaker 1 (19:47):
He was.

Speaker 2 (19:48):
He was a round dB.

Speaker 5 (19:49):
He gave me a lot of love when I was younger,
and he's always been that guy. He's been a guy
that's been friendly, not stand office with the up and
coming guys that were in the league around my time,
especially my time, because he was telling off at that
end at the end of that year with the Ravens
that I think he was with the Ravens at that
time and has always shown love.

Speaker 1 (20:09):
Man, he's been a good guy. Let me ask you.
Because I don't know him, I know people that have
been around him. Yeah, And I think there's this perception
from the people that don't like him, that all of
this is a charade, is a front, and I think
it's the exact opposite. I just think he's the rare
person that doesn't have to play the game and say

(20:31):
all the right things at the podium and be polite
and be He could just be himself and be I mean,
the guy is probably who knows what his net worth is.
He's got a ton of off the field stuff on
top of his playing career.

Speaker 2 (20:40):
Da da da.

Speaker 1 (20:41):
I just bring it up because I actually think he
seems to me to actually be one hundred percent authentic,
and I think that is what actually rubs people the
wrong way.

Speaker 5 (20:48):
Yeah, authenticity is when you can be that way and
live that way. Oh, there's going to end be that
for sure, because a lot a lot of people out
here and in the world at this time, they don't
they don't live that way, and so when they see
somebody living that way, they really can't believe that it's true.
But that's him, That's who he is. He's been that
way since I've known him, and nothing has changed from

(21:10):
the playing days to who he is right now.

Speaker 1 (21:12):
So what do you make of him as a coach.
Last year, obviously they have the three and oh start
took the college football It took the sporting world. By
I mean it was the biggest It was the biggest
story of that early part of the season. Start three
and oh. They beat TCU, which was the defending national
runners up. They beat Nebraska, they beat Colorado State. That
Colorado State game was crazy, the eleven Eastern kickoff. I

(21:35):
mean I host till two am Eastern, we got off air.
Game was in overtime and I stayed until the very end.
I think there was like eleven million people watching throughout
that game. But obviously after the three and oh start,
they finished one and eight kind of falls apart. The
old line isn't very good. The d line isn't very good.
What are you expecting and what are you hoping to
see from year two?

Speaker 5 (21:56):
In coach Brian, I'm definitely expecting a better showing than
last year. They have skilled players, obviously, which we know
they're going to be better. They've beefed up the front
on both sides of the ball, and you need that
to be competitive in any league, and so I'm expecting
them to take a jump. I don't know how big
of a jump that's going to be during a new conference,
really good conference. And you know, when we talk about

(22:17):
Dion as a coach, I think it's still TBD. I
mean he's coached that, you know, in the at the
Swack level, which he was really good at because he
could get the players that he wanted and he needed
and you know, the cream of the crop in that
in that league, and so you expected him to be good.
But now it's a step up. You got you can't
talk to talk to be successful in that league, and

(22:37):
so he's going to have to get the players and
we'll see. I mean, I think it is to be
the TBD with that, but I'm excited to see what
happens in year two.

Speaker 1 (22:45):
Well, and that's why I like, I think there's just
like a bogus narrative about him, is that you know,
he's all sizzled nose steak. It's like, last two years
at Jackson State eleven and two, twelve and one, that's
I'm not great at math, but that's twenty three and
three overall good.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
Uh yeah, very good.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
And by the way, one of those losses was to
an FBS team there of course in the FCS. So
it's like it's like against like minded competition twenty three
and two in the last two years, and so it's
like I believe he could coach. And I think last
year that like it just got first of all, they
just weren't very good. Like I think this is what
people forget too, is like he took over the worst

(23:23):
team in Power conference football. And like for people who forget, like,
I'm just gonna read you some of the scores from
the year before coach Prime got to Colorado to kind
of give you an understanding of the situation that he
took over. So last year was year one, So this
was the twenty twenty two season. The year before he
got there, lose forty one to ten to Air Force. Okay,

(23:45):
no disrespect to to you know, love the flag, whatever,
but I don't think they had a bunch of pros
on that team. Forty nine to seven, to Minnesota forty
five to seventeen, to UCLA forty three to twenty, to
Arizona forty two to nine, to Oregon State forty nine
to ten, to Oregon fifty five to seventeen, to USC
fifty four to seven, to Washington sixty three to twenty.

(24:09):
So he took over quite literally the worst program at
the then Power five level. Yep, they improved to four
and eight. And I think what's worth noting is even
in their losses, you know, a lot of close competitive games.
I just mentioned in twenty twenty two, the year before
he got their Colorado loses to USC fifty five to seventeen.

(24:30):
Last year they lose to USC forty eight to forty one.
Mentioned that in twenty twenty two they lost to Oregon
State forty two to nine. Last year they lose to
Oregon State twenty six to nineteen. By the way Arizona
walk off field goal. They lost lose to Utah by six.
I know it wasn't pretty and there were some bad
losses last year. Get make no mistake that Oregon game

(24:51):
was ugly. They lost to Washington State late in the
year and it was ugly as well. They weren't as
far away from being not great. But six and six,
seven and five as I think a lot of people think. Yeah,
And the one thing I will say, I've follow the
recruiting stuff a little closer than most, but they they
brought in some real dudes last year, like I think
last offseason clean house, bring in new bodies, but the

(25:16):
quality of player this offseason is so much better. I
won't bore people with too many details, but we know
they signed the number one offensive tackle in high school football.
But they got an All Pack twelve defensive lineman from
Arizona State. They got a thousand yard receiver from Florida Atlanta.
I mean, they just brought in a lot. By the
way they're starting right tackle was that in the big
Teddy gave up one sacks starting all thirty all twelve

(25:38):
games last year. So that's the only point I'm trying
to make is I do think the talent is going
to be much improved, and I'm just really intrigued.

Speaker 2 (25:47):
And excited to see what this team looks like.

Speaker 5 (25:49):
Well, what you just said to me right now is
they're really bad last year and two years the year before.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
Yes, I mean a lot of points. That's a lot
of points.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
I mean I didn't hear I didn't hear anything lower
than forty in that in that rundown. So it was
it was a lot of a lot of bad games.
But no, I think the thing about coaching and head
coaching that gets lost in the in the fray because
obviously the head coach and the quarterback gets a lot
of credit. But to be a really great head coach
at any level, there's a level of humility, humility that

(26:18):
needs to be had.

Speaker 2 (26:19):
He has that.

Speaker 5 (26:20):
And when I say he has that, it's because when
you're the head guy in charge, you're the face of
the organization, face of the franchise. But you got to
surround yourself with real talent at those other coaching positions.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
He's went out and got that.

Speaker 5 (26:36):
That is what I'm more That's what I'm more satisfied
with about the whole Deon brand in general.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
What the shots that he take, the takes that.

Speaker 5 (26:45):
People have on him being bragadocious or being you know,
always this bigger than life guy. That's some of that
could be some truth to that, but there's also a
bit of humility that people miss with him. And bringing
in the right guys and bringing in guys that could
be better than you or knowledge more knowledgeable than you
in certain situations is the recipe for success. And I
think he's done that. He's brought in, you know, to

(27:07):
ask you want anybody on staff once Apps come in
help with the D line and all that stuff, and
so having veteran guys, other NFL coaches on staff that helps,
and so I'm excited to see what they can do
as a unit.

Speaker 1 (27:18):
Damian Lewis, by the way, former first rounder I think
Houston Texans, he played at Miami. He is on on
the staff as well. Defensive line coach is alongside Warren Sapps.
So I'm excited as well, really quickly, because you know
you did play for Rex Ryan, right, So what is
it like? Does does it matter when the coach is
making headlines off the field every every single week. I'm

(27:38):
not speaking ill of Rex because he's entertaining his heck,
especially on TV, but uh, because I think that's kind
of an interesting perspective. Is again, it's all fun and
games when you win they struggle a little bit last year.
I think they'll be better. Does it matter to players,
Do they care that their coach is always in the
news that their coach maybe has had a couple of
run ins with reporters over the last couple weeks, As that.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
Matter at all?

Speaker 5 (27:57):
It depends on if you're winning they're losing, sure, and
it's always that's always the case. When you're winning, it
covers up a lot of things, of course, and you
kind of turn it. You can turn a blind eye
to it. But when you start losing, you see really
fast that the same people that were admiring you for
being that person, for being the person that scene and
being the guy that's making all the headlines and talking
the way that you know, like a Rex did at

(28:18):
the time, once you lose, those same people attack you.
So you just have to have a little bit awareness
around that.

Speaker 2 (28:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (28:24):
No, it's really interesting because obviously last week second incident
with a reporter came out, but it's like, I don't
know how close you followed it, but like the reporter
said some pretty nasty stuff about them, and it's like,
I don't know your perspective as a player, if you
ever had a bad experience with the media, you know,
now you're on the other side of it as well.
It's like even last week, it's like it was so
easy to just oh, this guy can't you know, this

(28:46):
guy being Dione, Like, oh, he can't handle it. And
it's like, as somebody who did go to school for
journalism was a report, like there is a level of
like professionalism that you and the media have to attain,
and if you don't have that level of professionalism, like
you're not. It's not a birthright that you're given a

(29:08):
credential and allowed to do whatever and ask questions.

Speaker 2 (29:10):
I mean, I feel like.

Speaker 1 (29:11):
To me and and I I you know, I haven't
really talked about it on air, but like, I don't know,
I didn't really have a problem with some of the
stuff that he said last week, especially you know, basically
people who missed it the second incident where there was
a reporter from the Denver Post where he basically said
basically Colorado had made it clear that they were not
answering any questions from him.

Speaker 2 (29:32):
Yeah, and I don't know like that that was one.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
And again, by the way, if you're if you're five
and one, people are saying, oh, he's the next Nick Saban.
Nick Saban didn't like answering questions either. If you're one
and five, Oh, the guys a hack and so I
didn't have any problem with that last week. But I
I don't know, I just I find the whole situation fascinating.

Speaker 4 (29:50):
There.

Speaker 5 (29:50):
Yeah, the beat you know, the beat writers are the
guys that you're going to be around a lot, and
so you kind of quickly identify who those who are right.
And so, I mean you talk about success and failure
or winning and losing in any league, right, there's there's
guys that you know that are there to do the
job and do it with integrity and do it the

(30:11):
right way. And then there are some guys that are
there to find the fishers and find the cracks to
trying to poke away at that. And so if that's
if that's that guy's track record, then yeah, you don't
have to deal with that. I'm actually if that's the case,
I'm happy that the university's taking the stand and not
allow him to be in that in that mix.

Speaker 1 (30:30):
Yeah, among the things, this guy's name is Sean Keeler.
He's the uh comment uh columnists, excuse me for the
Denver Post, among the things that he has called Dion
a false prophet, Planet Prime, the Bruce Lee of BS.

Speaker 2 (30:44):
I saw that one.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
Yeah, dude, it's like, you know, to me, it's like, listen,
we all have opinions, right, and we all say stuff. Yeah,
but like if I was going after if you're the
head coach of the Denver Broncos whatever, and it's like,
I have a I have a right to criticize, but
I think they're there's a degree where you can cross
a line with that criticism and then beyond that.

Speaker 2 (31:05):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
I just like, I just I think that I think
there are ways you can say that this guy has
not lived up to expect if you believe that Dion
has not lived up to expectations now worth noting they
went from one to eleven to four and eight in
his first year. But if he's not living up to expectations,
or you believe that some of the stuff he's saying
isn't true, there's a way to say it without calling
him the Bruce le a BS, which I don't even
really understand what that even means. But maybe I need,

(31:28):
maybe I need to be a Denver Post subscriber to
fully understand the context and that and so.

Speaker 5 (31:32):
Yeah, no, you get you have the right to say
whatever you want, but they have the right to refuse
you entry to questions as well. So it's it's a
give and take. And obviously, yes, I mean, if like
I said, if this guy has a history of doing
this and a history of trying to bait Dion to
to do whatever, get whatever answer response he wants, there
becomes it becomes it can become a toxic situation. So

(31:55):
it seems like that's what this has brewd to grown too,
and so that's what we all know.

Speaker 1 (32:01):
By the way, his most recent column, let me see
if I can find the headlines. Well, this is not
the one I was looking for. But this is this
Sean Keeler guy. He just put out a new column
and it was actually very complimentary.

Speaker 2 (32:13):
So let's see. That's the point is like here you go.
Oh no, maybe not.

Speaker 1 (32:19):
The first part was very compl This is the column
from eighteen hours ago Deon Sanders. See you buffs look smart, tough, fast.
I thought that was where it ended. Then he says,
but are they disciplined? So listen, everyone's a title to
their opinion. But I tend to agree with you is
I don't believe that you know just because you work
for a fancy newspaper or TV outlet. I think there's

(32:41):
a degree of professionalism. I do think this guy caught
crossed it a little bit. I have no problem with that,
but I am excited. Colorado plays North Dakota State eight
pm Eastern Tomorrow on Thursday, and again on Fox. We
of course have North Dakota or North Carolina excuse me
against Minnesota. This is the Comedo and Rich Show. Aaron
Torres and Carrie Rhodes in for the guy guys.

Our one talked a lot of current events. Current events,
so the Steelers have officially named Russell Wilson their Week
one starter. We broke that down. We also talked a

(33:59):
little bit about on Sanders and Colorado, who will debut tomorrow,
first Thursday of the college football season. Cannot wait and
of course crazy to think like a week from you
know tomorrow, Chiefs Ravens.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
Crazy. No, that's the one I'm excited about. I know
you're a college guy.

Speaker 5 (34:18):
I know you really in, you know, in the trenches
and really committed to that. And I do enjoy college
football for sure. But you can't start any any better
than Chiefs Ravens. I know, Week one.

Speaker 1 (34:31):
I'm almost surprised that they made that the opening night
game because usually it's like a team on the right,
like last year we had the Lions, you know, and
it's like it usually feels like it's a team on
the rise that you know, we want to give them
that spotlight of opening night. I remember, like Brady year one,
when he was in Tampa. I believe they played in

(34:51):
that that first. I could be totally wrong on that,
but I just bring it up because Ravens obviously the
reigning MVP and Lamar Jackson, you know AFC Championship game rematch,
that that just it's great for the fan. Yeah, I'm
just surprised that that was what they decided to go
with in Week one because that's a game that obviously

(35:11):
it could be at a one o'clock in Week seven
and we're all rearranging our schedule, you know. So I'm
just surprised that they did that, and we want I'm
not I mean, jump start this year with fireworks. You
get to have the defending champions versus the team they
beat to go to the Super Bowl last year. It's

(35:31):
just must see football and every the only game that day.
I know it's gonna be crazy. By the way, this year,
first time ever, we get a Friday night game. That's
of course the Peacock game from Brazil Eagles and Packers.
So we get Thursday, Friday, Sunday, Monday, we'll get the
Monday doubleheader, and of course the all day Saturday with college.

Speaker 5 (35:55):
Are they actually going to play that game in Brazil
or the party. It's well, I'm just trying to figure it out.
I want to know the logistics of what.

Speaker 1 (36:01):
Well, it's funny I was telling you during the break,
we just went to my wife and I and her
family and my mom went to Guatemala, where she's from originally.
But I bring it up only because her cousin was
with us. Her cousin is a professional soccer player in
South America, but he played in Brazil. And I asked him,
I said, is there anything to do in in Rio
Rio de Janio besides party? And you guys looked at

(36:25):
me and he basically looked at me and was like, no,
you know, he got the I think it's Coco Cabana
Beach and he's like it's He's like, you know, he's
probably you know, you and I are about the same age.
He's probably he's probably like late twenties something like that.
You could tell he's had a time or two down
in Rio Rio. I want to see ru which is
a hotel that's neither here nor there but Rio. And

(36:46):
of course again Eagles and Packers next Friday, next Thursday,
we have Ravens. She that is I'll tell you this man,
the NFL. One thing I'll say about the NFL. They
know how to grow a business and give the consumer
what they want. I mean, standalone games, Yeah, prime time.
Like you said, start off the season with a bang Friday.

(37:09):
Everybody's gonna have a take, especially if the Ravens lose.
Oh my goodness, the Lamar takes are going to be flowing, baby.

Speaker 5 (37:16):
So exactly did you have There were some reports early
on about that Friday game in Brazil that, uh, it
was something about the colors of the uniforms or something.

Speaker 2 (37:24):
What was that. Bursch is there producer.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
Bursch is our fantasy football guy who does uh he
does the show on Sunday with Bayer and all them.
So do you know anything about this? Was there a
special uniform or anything of that nature.

Speaker 2 (37:38):
No, I remember that.

Speaker 7 (37:40):
So it was kind of misinterpreted where Josh Jacobs said
that they weren't allowed to wear green, and people thought
it was because of the local gangs, but it's actually
because of the soccer team that plays in that stadium.
It's the rival of the soccer team that got it.
So that's why typically green is outlawed in that stadium.

Speaker 2 (37:58):
There you go.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
So that's basically like, if you're you're an Ohio State fan,
you don't call Michigan, you call him the school up
north like.

Speaker 2 (38:03):
Things like that kind of thing. Exactly.

Speaker 1 (38:05):
All right, So football is coming in college this weekend,
NFL next weekend.

Speaker 2 (38:10):
Saw this story.

Speaker 1 (38:11):
And one thing about that I love about Covino and
Rich is they always include the audience in the show
and I want to pick your brain, but I want
to pick the audience's.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
Brain as well. Saw this story coming out today. Is
that the.

Speaker 1 (38:26):
Jersey that Lebron James wore when he was famously on
the cover of Sports Illustrated at sixteen years old, the
chosen one that is up for auction here in the
coming days. It is believed that it could net up
to a million to two million dollars, which would be

(38:46):
obviously a world record for a high school basketball jersey. This,
of course, this news is coming off of just a
few days ago, the Bay Bruth jersey. I cannot believe this,
the Bay Bruth jersey that he was wearing when he
called the shot the World Series. Yeah, twenty four million dollars.
I mean, obviously, if you got twenty four million to

(39:08):
spend on a piece of cloth.

Speaker 2 (39:10):
Money is not much of an issue.

Speaker 1 (39:11):
Not an issue first of all, as a former athlete,
does memorabilia do anything for you? Because I'll just say this,
for me, even if I had an infinite amount of money,
I don't know that i'd be interested in spending twenty
four of twenty four million on a jersey, you know,
like Lebron's even Lebron's jersey?

Speaker 2 (39:29):
Is it sweaty? Is it not sweet?

Speaker 1 (39:30):
I mean, I'm not gonna wear it like you put
it up in your house. But again, if it's sweaty,
I don't know, it just feels weird to me. Uh,
your former athlete one does? Does does paraphernalia do anything
for you? But then as importantly, like especially in this
jersey swap era, like did were you too? Are you
too young for the jerseys? Are you too old for
the jersey swap era? I hate to ask you in

(39:52):
that I'm not. I'm on the cuffs.

Speaker 2 (39:54):
Sure.

Speaker 5 (39:54):
So there's a couple of situations where I did the
jersey swap after the game, uh, for former teammate from college. Sure,
we would do it because it was very personal. Of course,
I wasn't just doing it with any and everybody. We
didn't do that, but I do have a couple that happened.
And as far as memorabilia goes, I'm not like huge
on that. Definitely not going out to seek and buy memorabilia, no,

(40:18):
But I do have some cool memorabilia. I have some
signed gloves Warren Gloves of Sugar Ray Leonard the Boxer.
So I had that, but it's just sitting on my
coffee table. It's collecting dust and I probably shouldn't sit
on the air. But that's how loose with that.

Speaker 2 (40:33):
I am.

Speaker 1 (40:34):
So with the jersey swap stuff. Yeah, okay, so me
and you played together. We're you know, we're DBU at
Louisville back in the day. You know, whatever I play
for the Ravens, you play for the Jets. When I
give you my jersey, what then becomes of it? Do
you get it framed?

Speaker 5 (40:49):
Like?

Speaker 2 (40:49):
How does that work? Yeah?

Speaker 5 (40:50):
I got a couple of a couple of them framed.
I have a couple of them still in boxes that
I hate to say on the air Live again, but yeah,
it just depends. I mean, I'm not, like I said,
it's not a It's not like this thing where I
glorify it to the point of having to have a
whole room dedicated to it at all. But I do
get it done. I do take care of most of
them all right. By the way, we do want to

(41:11):
hear from the audience. Uh, guys and girls driving around
you're getting off of work? Are you a guy a
paraphernalia guy or girl? In other words, if you had
the money to spend or have you jev is there
something that is a memento of your favorite team, something
of your favorite athlete that you love.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
We want to hear from.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
You can call in one eight seven seven ninety nine
on Fox. One eight seven seven nine nine six six
three six nine Again one eight seven seven nine nine
six six three six nine I apologize again. One eight
seven seven ninety nine on Fox. Yeah, I just I'm
fascinated by Yeah, that process because you see the jersey swap.

Speaker 2 (41:52):
You don't know what happens. Yeah. By the way, have
you like kind of a weird question, But has anything
of yours ever shown up online? And you're not?

Speaker 1 (42:03):
By the way, carry roads people who are just tuning
in Errtoris and carry rhoads Inforced Covino and Rich Carrie,
of course, a nine year NFL vet, as the intro
told you a former All Pro safety, has any of
your stuff ever shown up online? Like, oh, how did
they get that jersey or this or that? Absolutely? Yeah, yeah, no,
we were talking off the air. I thought that I

(42:26):
saw some gloves of mine that popped up online, and
I do before games a lot of time. When I played,
I was very personable with the fans, and so I
would throw stuff in the stands here and there, so
you never think that you're going to see this stuff
again or hear about it. And then you look online
and you see your gloves on sale for a penny,
and then you're like, wow, that's pretty cool. Even though
it's cheap, it's still there. So somebody had the thought

(42:50):
of keeping it for a while.

Speaker 5 (42:52):
I'm done now, I'm a little bit older and out
of the way, and so maybe I can make a
couple of dollars on it.

Speaker 2 (42:57):
No dollars, but you can make sense. Yeah, well all
my stuff.

Speaker 1 (42:59):
Yeah, what I'll say is we're on online before eBay.
Singapore has a pair of carry Roads gloves going for
like ninety bucks. So I don't know if you knew
you were as big in Singapore as apparently you are.
But they can't keep the perry the carry roads paraphernalia.

Speaker 2 (43:16):
On the shelves over there. So wow, how much is
it again? I think it was ninety bucks? Wow, ninety
for a pair of gloves.

Speaker 1 (43:23):
And then there was a separate piece of carry roads
paraphernalia that could be paid for in four easy payments
I believe of seventeen eighteen or seventeen twelve, I believe there.
So so your stuff is flying off the shelves. But yes,
this lebron James Jersey could go for one to two
million dollars.

Speaker 5 (43:43):
And come on, Aaron, so look, I go ahead. I
got a proposition for you. So you're not big into it,
you're not a guy that really cares about it. But
I'll tell you this right now. If you were the
one that bought the gloves, I would match it for you.
So if you bought the gloves, okay, I would actually
give you your money back. So I match whatever you paid

(44:05):
for it. You just have the gloves and you'll make
one hundred dollars how about that for free? So so
you just paid me back, I would pay you. I
would pay you back, but you keep the glove as well,
So you won't be paying anything.

Speaker 1 (44:16):
Are you just are you the one that's actually selling
the gloves online? Yes, they've been sitting online for too long.
Now there, they've been sitting on line for a while.
You're like, I gotta get these out of out of
the house.

Speaker 5 (44:25):
You bust you busted me. Now there you go. Oh man, no, no, no, no,
I'm joking by again.

Speaker 1 (44:31):
One eight seven seven ninety nine on Fox one eight
seven seven nine nine six six three six ' nine.
We're talking about paraphernalia jerseys Lebron James's chosen one jersey. Uh,
it is going to auction. They believe it could get
one to two million dollars. Yeah, it's funny, Like I
just I don't know what I like. I I cause

(44:52):
I because like the thing is is that even if
you got something cool, like what would you do with
you know, It's like you mentioned the sugar Ray Leonar gloves.
It's like, uh, I get you know, like and you know, listen,
I we live in California, so I live in a
very comfortable but it's it's still an apartment. It's not
like I have like a man cave, right, But I mean,
what would you even do with all of it, Like

(45:13):
it was funny.

Speaker 2 (45:13):
I remember reading a story a few years ago. You
left but O J.

Speaker 1 (45:18):
Simpson's heisman, Like at some point it disappeared and some
guy just had it in his house, right, But it
was like I think it was property of USC and
it had been stolen from USC and like so this
guy got it off the black market. So it was
like kind of cool that you had it, but you
couldn't really tell anybody because then if you tell them,
they'll know that you have this.

Speaker 2 (45:37):
Stolen piece of property. So it's like, I just don't know.
I don't know. I just it's just not my thing.

Speaker 5 (45:43):
You know, you just invite your your your drinking buddies
all I'm saying and say that's what I'm saying in
his room.

Speaker 2 (45:51):
Yeah, I don't know. It's just it's just it's not
my thing.

Speaker 1 (45:54):
And it's like, you know, I was thinking about this
is like and I will pay for experiences, right, I
mean I you know, I mean kond of Lum I
was covering the last two final fours. But in twenty eleven,
when I was dead broken, young and in my early twenties,
I still took money out of my own pocket to
go see them play. So it's not like I'm a
sports snob that's never going to spend any money on anything.
But it's just I just don't know that that this

(46:18):
is for me.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
You don't see the reason for it at all.

Speaker 1 (46:20):
Yeah, I mean, like loo again, like what would when
you got first of all, we're the what was it
Sugar Ray letter, Sugar Robinson Sugar letter?

Speaker 2 (46:27):
Yeah? Were they gifted to you?

Speaker 4 (46:29):
Do you know?

Speaker 2 (46:29):
Sugar Rell?

Speaker 3 (46:30):
Like?

Speaker 2 (46:30):
How did you end up gifted to me from him? Personally? Yes?
Oh well that's yeah. You got to keep those.

Speaker 5 (46:34):
Yeah, I gotta keep them. They're there and they're on display. Yeah,
it's just not covered up in the big golden crusted
thing or anything.

Speaker 2 (46:41):
It's just they're there. It's cool.

Speaker 1 (46:43):
I will say, like I remember years ago I wrote
an article back with my in my writing days when
I used to write a lot, and it was a
column on Alabama football after they won one of their
national championships. And somebody I knew was friends with Nick
Saban and they actually gave him a copy of it
printed out, and he actually autographed it. It's a really
cool thing to have, But I think about it now,

(47:04):
it's just sitting in a closet, you know, in my closet,
like just collecting dust like you said so
