Speaker 3 (00:26):
They like, we're all living in a fog. I feel
like Monday, January sixth, the world gets back to normal.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
I know it's a big conspiracy, Rich. The fog is everywhere,
the fog, the fog Man. They're trying to cover up
all the drones's with all the manical fog. But that's
not what Rich talks about. He's still in his holiday mode.
He's wearing slippers and pajama pants to the studio. Close.
Holidays are over, man, the new year. It's a Thursday
that feels like a Tuesday. But Thursday's new Fridays the weekends.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Right now, let's let's not harp on all that, you know,
post holiday, John, I'm just saying my kids are still home,
there's toys everywhere.
Speaker 1 (01:03):
No one's put away.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Their Christmas stuff yet, so it's you know, you're still
living in that holiday fog. Don't have to act like
you're eating healthy all of a sudden again, you're still
eating leftover gone.

product in the world of sports, and you acting like
you're on your new twenty twenty five mission. It's not
about that. I'm here to have fun and do our show.
Rich is still in holiday mode. He says that the
holiday season isn't officially over until the sixth that's his theory.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Traffic is light, kids are home. God knows your boss
isn't working today, right? Can we all agree no matter
what you do for living, your boss is still off.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
I mean, I don't know what our bosses. I mean,
if your bosses are still who runs his place is here?
Speaker 3 (02:22):
I know that Again, Dan Byer would say, exactly, he's
not really the bosses.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Nah, he's here. He's running stuff. So lots to get
to today. On the show, Every Thursday, we got Rich's
Solar power parlay old school win fifty hits. We throw
it back and reminisce. We're gonna discuss your childhood and
I'll give you a little hint things you may have
missed out on Okay plus the worst advice You've ever
been told. There's a story about Jack Buck and the
(02:49):
advice he gives to young broadcasters and podcasters out there.
It's the worst advice ever. It's so funny, though funny
story from Joe Buck about his dad and weak ass
or cool ass Christmas Honikah gifts, depending on how you
look at it. George Kittle was the news for something funny.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
But before we get into Joe Buck and Jack Buck,
which is what I do want to start with today
as it's hilarious. I was talking to Jay Stu, who
was wrapping up they got leap show.
Speaker 1 (03:14):
Who jay Stu? You know Jay Stue? By the way, Hi,
Danny g Hey?
Speaker 4 (03:20):
Hi?
Speaker 1 (03:20):
Right?
Speaker 5 (03:23):
Ryan Smith is with us today and for the sick
Iowa Sam because.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Sam has a very very weak immune system apparently.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Can I tell you I don't want to get down
on Iowa Sam. I do, but let me tell you
I'll give you a sports analogie.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Since we are Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
Sometimes you see Patrick Mahomes look like his ankle get
ripped off, and three plays later he's back in the game,
and you're like, is he just tougher?
Speaker 1 (03:44):
Does he play it up? What's going on?
Speaker 3 (03:46):
You know when you feel a little under the weather
and you're not quite sure how others react. I feel
like if you had what Iowa Sam had, you wouldn't
even mention it. Is he one of those sniffle guys
like I'm calling out today.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Down with the black long what's up? Dan Buyer?
Speaker 6 (04:03):
And if you guys don't know this, he is also
out tomorrow, so he's also he's already He's proactive. Fordt
Why he's already said, Iowa Sam, Big Apple Sam, Philly
Sam over the Christmas break is now Illy Sam?
Speaker 5 (04:17):
He is sick?
Speaker 1 (04:18):
How does he know he's he is the Joel and
beat a Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 6 (04:22):
He's the Miscleo of health. He knows when he's gonna
feel like.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
I'd What I'm saying is like everybody has different pain tolerance.
Therefore what maybe a sniffle to you is someone else
calling out of work.
Speaker 5 (04:38):
I feel like the boosters and the flu shots he
gets are what caused his illnesses.
Speaker 3 (04:44):
And listen or he's just a big ween get all
the political pundits on this show. Danny j nobody, but
he is the guy though that gets flus and COVID shots.
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Still like, I'm like, you still get all that stuff.
Speaker 6 (04:53):
In defense, he is in a shared space. So Danny's
got a young one. Maybe he doesn't want to give
Danny anything so his child wouldn't get sick. Maybe doesn't
want to get Jay Stu sick. That could also be
I do appreciate that. At the end of yesterday's show, dB,
he said, I don't know if you noticed, but I
coughed into my shirt because I don't want to want
a guy.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
I what a guy that'll save me.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
We're making the plaque should be in by tuesday for that, yes, perfect, well,
hanging on the wall.
Speaker 1 (05:21):
Well, I do think people handle those situations differently. There's
no question in sports, in life at the office.
Speaker 3 (05:28):
I'm not trying to I'm not trying to, you know,
bust his chops too much because I love Iowa Sam.
But again, in sports, in life at the office, you
always wonder, oh that person, Uh yeah, I rolled my
ankle playing basketball. If you did the same thing, would
you react more or less in that person? Because everyone's
pain tolerance is different.
Speaker 1 (05:49):
You know. I learned that lesson early on in life.
I always hated the feeling of calling out a school
because I felt like crap in the morning. You always
feel worse in the morning and at night, right, yeah,
and then by midday by the time The Price Is
Right was on, by the time Jenny Jones was on,
Ricky Lake was on, you're thinking to yourself. I got
a win.
Speaker 5 (06:08):
I could have went just saw this in the NFL
with the Eagles and the Colts. Anthony Richardson said he
was sore. Meanwhile, we find out Kenny Pickett got a
shot before the game in his ribs and then another
shot at halftime.
Speaker 1 (06:22):
Yeah, you don't want to miss out, man, I'd have
that feeling of what it was? Free pizza day?
Speaker 7 (06:26):
Oh yeah, no, like, yeah, something happened. We got to
play seven up in school. Oh man, we played kickball,
you know, Iowa Sam. We should tell him that Dan
Byer brought in donuts and pizza. Make him feel left
out out.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
We should tell him Caitlyn Clark came by for an
unexpected interview. Yeah, exactly, give him the FOMO. Well, anyway,
get well. I was saym well, we'll see you next week.
Speaker 1 (06:48):
But I sent him a get well edible arrangement.
Speaker 3 (06:51):
I did want to bring up one sports related thing
before we get to Joe Buck and Jack Buck. Dan
Byer got to go to the Rose Bawl yesterday.
Speaker 4 (06:59):
dB.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
I saw the pictures. Looks like, what a great time.
I know, Ohio State delivered in a big way for you. Yes,
great moment for you.
Speaker 6 (07:07):
Great moment, exciting day, and I appreciate something with Rich
Davis is Rich came in and didn't ask to see
the whole photo. Role just said, hey, show me a picture.
That's all that people want, Like I go on vacations
and take fifty pictures that I'm the only one that
looks at Rich is like, show me one where your
partner next to you saw my video on TikTok, did
(07:30):
not like it.
Speaker 1 (07:32):
Viewed it. It says views.
Speaker 6 (07:36):
Yes, that's the bone that I have to pick with you, Cavino,
maybe Rich Davis twenty twenty five years because because.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
I view it and didn't like it, Wow, it.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Pops up and it's a video that is taken off
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
I wouldn't say it's gone.
Speaker 6 (07:50):
Completely viral, but getting a lot of notifications, and I
can look at it right here and it says, you know, what,
do you know who has liked it, who's viewed it?
Speaker 1 (07:59):
And the people that I'm friends.
Speaker 6 (08:00):
With Cavino, one of them like his pops up right
away and it just says Steve Covino viewed. But if
you liked it, Underneath it says liked your video about
this guy, not Steve Cavino. I'm not just saying this.
Sing me with your like, I swear to you. I
feel like I like that video. I did have a
tweet I sent out playing to the same video.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
But checked the tweet, okay, because I remember seeing a
Dan Byer video and hitting like, But I really think.
Speaker 6 (08:28):
Jason Stewart liked it.
Speaker 1 (08:29):
Wow, I can see it. Rich wanted to see a
pick just so he could judge how good your seats were.
That's all. I just wanted to see how important you
really are, Dan, what kind of seats you had.
Speaker 6 (08:38):
That actually makes sense because he tried to convince me
that end zone seats are better than fifty yard line,
which we all know is not true.
Speaker 3 (08:45):
I wanted to bring up it's it's funny she said this,
because this is where my thought was going. Dan Bayer
had end zone seats. Yeah, and I used to be
opposed to end zone seats. But one of the last
games I went to, Covino and I were in Miami.
I like that he went to a Dolphins game with
some budd and I do feel unless you got primo
fifty yard line where you sort of get a view
(09:06):
of everything, I think that bird's eye view from the
end zone.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
Isn't that terrible of a view? And it's pretty good.
Speaker 6 (09:12):
I agree, when you have scoring in your end zone,
which we were in the Ohio State end zone. There
seemed to be more scoring in the Oregon end zone,
if you will, that's when it's really good when it's
on your side. But I will say something that is
interesting in all of this, and I don't know if
you guys are the same. I really get messed up
in not getting the TV view, like if I'm on
(09:34):
the opposite sideline, and so like all when you watch
the highlights, everything is backwards from your memory.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
It messes me up so much, GB when I tell you.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
That that sentiment that you just presented with something I've
never heard anyone else talk about except in my nogging,
in my own mind, because I went to the forty
nine Ers Raven Super Bowl in New Orleans. Hope everyone's
doing around the word a rough time in New Orleans.
That's super Bowl in twenty thirteen. Yep, I was on
(10:06):
the opposite side. Oh so every time I now see
a highlight of Kaepernick and that team and them trying
to make the comeback, it's all flipped from what my
mind remembers, and you're right, it is mind blowing.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
You forget about you the viewer. Even though that's a
really interesting point. I always ask this question from the
player's perspective. We've interviewed a lot of players. I'm like,
do you remember, like you running and you juking the
defenders or do you just picture the highlight as you
saw it on TV? It's a great question, like do
just that a few times? Does the athlete picture the
first person moment? Or have they seen their own highlights?
(10:41):
Are they we live in the memory through their face mask,
or do they have the same memory that we do
of seeing the highlight on TV?
Speaker 6 (10:48):
You've probably seen the highlight twenty times and you can
only live it once, right, so it would probably I
maybe it would be the highlights. It is a mind bleep,
if you will.
Speaker 1 (10:59):
And by the way, I've gotten both answers, because I've
asked so many people that like, that was such a
big moment, what's your recollection of it? I've gotten both,
So yeah, that's interesting.
Speaker 5 (11:07):
Dan.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
You know what, from a fan perspective, though I never
thought of that.
Speaker 6 (11:11):
I chose the tickets and I knew the Ohio State
fans were on one side, so I didn't want to
be thought the Oregon fans wanted to be by the
Ohio state side. But I also knew of the flyover,
which is what my video is, was going to be coming.
So I'm like, let's try to be more towards the
end zone. And it ended up working out in all shapes,
said great fans both of both teams around me, and
so great Afternoon of Throws Bowl.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
And the Goodyear blimp was there, Yes it was, and
it said Dan Byer is a pimp. So that was
a good day. Let me tell you.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
It's it's this that's the fun of our show. Things
that no one ever really brings up. I feel like,
come up seeing a perspective of a play, and you said,
even players, right, what perspective do you remember? I'm just
picturing like legendary plays. I don't know why I popped
in my head, but remember Lebron running down the whole
court with that block shot when he was on the Cavs.
(12:02):
If you're on the opposite end of the of that arena,
you're not seeing him run from left to right. You're
seeing him run right to left. If you are at
a Super Bowl and you see a sweet catch in
the end zone.
Speaker 1 (12:16):
Everyone else might have saw that going left to right.
You've seen it right to left.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
A fight. You could be ringside. You could picture your
fighter stands on the left. No, no, he's on the right.
It's a weird wait, don't remember things.
Speaker 6 (12:28):
Yeah, at the end of the game, when you know
the fans are filing out, you go to get your
picture of the fifty yard line where the logo is
facing you like the camera. No one is rushing to
the other fifty yard line with the upside down logo
and that it'ts and the writing upside down. It all
is from that TV perspective, if you will.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
And I wasn't joking. Dan Byern did post a video
and we talked about it, Dan yesterday amongst each other
of the blimp, the good Year blimp being at the game,
and you made a reference of that's how you know
it's a big deal when the good Year of plimp
is there, And I said, yeah, that is one of
those moments in life. Rich said, I didn't even know
they still had a good I mean like in fighting,
(13:13):
if Michael Buffer had the call, you knew it was
a bigger event. In baseball as a Yankees fan, if
they brought out the red, white and blue banners over
the caram you knew it was a big playoff game.
Like there's certain things in life where you know when
you bust out a certain thing, you know it's a
special occasion. And damn it.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Was flying loud and proud.
Speaker 6 (13:33):
And what I will say with this is with this
video at buyer talk is where you can see it
on TikTok, the flyover of the B two bomber has
turned into a war of the left and the right,
and the comments it is become all political. I did
it because I loved it as a pregame festivity for
the Rose Bowl.
Speaker 5 (13:51):
Even my even like the.
Speaker 6 (13:52):
Description is like you know, you know, happy New Year,
what you know, getting ready for the Rose Bowl. And
it flies over and it is now it is a
political war going on in the comments.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
And by the way, like that's been going on for
so long and now all of a sudden, people are
like realizing how odd it is that we would do
that for a college football game. And it's like, yeah,
but we do that for lots of big.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
Well, if you want to hear more on this, Dan
Byer's gonna be on Fox News to discussing his post.
Speaker 1 (14:22):
I noticed that aside from the comments, I noticed that
on social media just becoming a conversation.
Speaker 6 (14:27):
I know, by the way, just with that, you know, Unfortunately,
on the passing of Jimmy Carter when he passed away,
I remember on Fox like for more coverage on this,
go to Fox News, and I'm like, that's the last
place most people are going for the passing of Jimmy
Carter first of all. But it's I don't know, Steve,
I have no idea and how it became what it became.
(14:48):
I took it as a pregame moment with the fireworks
and it's New Year's Day, and it's exciting, beautiful moment. Yeah,
and it's turned into something different. I do know in
the NFL, by the way that they're when they used
to do the veterans thing, and they got a lot
of flak for that, that that was part of the
budget that was within the Department of Defense to try
to promote the military.
Speaker 5 (15:09):
That that was all budgeted.
Speaker 6 (15:10):
It wasn't taxpayer money per se, but it was a
part of a marketing budget. And I just remember as
during the NFL it was a few years back. It
really got are we spending our money on this? And
then they're like, well, yeah, it's part of our marketing.
And I mean it's a full, full on, you know
argument in the comments.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Trust me, people want to find something political about something,
they will. I was telling Covino recently on Serious ExM.
I'm on some of the pop channels. I just made
reference that Ellen Degenerous left the country because I was like,
you see, you know, just in passing, I see Ellen moved.
She's a you know, Trump won and Ellen's out, and
like complaints like.
Speaker 1 (15:50):
Rich Davis stick to pop music.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
All I said was Ellen Degenerous left the country.
Speaker 1 (15:56):
Anxiety brought that up then, because I noticed a lot
of a lot more people talking about that than the usual.
Speaker 3 (16:02):
People will take a simple, nice post of Damn Bayer
the military's flying over the rose ball.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
How could that be an argument?
Speaker 6 (16:09):
I saw a meme of Rich and Ellen's haircut online,
so it was.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Great, majorly controversial, you know. So one last question, based
on the views of the stadium. I just want to
throw this out here before we move on, because you
and I have been to a lot of cool stadiums
arenas this doesn't apply to outdoor stadiums obviously.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
But recently we took our daughters because we're great desks.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
We took our daughters to jingle Ball, the big Christmas concert,
and I found myself looking at the big screen at
into it where the Clippers.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Play, instead of the actual stage, more than the stage. Yeah,
and we gs tickets. No, But then there have been
times where we've been at a fight in Vegas. We're
at the MGM, and we even have good seats, but
I'll still find myself my eyes will go to the screen. Now,
what I noticed too, this is a really random thought.
(17:03):
I don't think you're gonna I'm not taking steam out
of your point, Rich, I know, but I noticed that
the screen is a better brighter visual than the actual visual,
because when we were in Miami, it was just more
enticing and appetizing to watch the screen than the actual dull, gloomy,
glum looking reality we were living in.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
So you're saying that the cameras enhanced, the cameras have
filtered the action to look clearer on the screen.
Speaker 1 (17:29):
I pointed it out, I said, Rich, look at the
field right, And we were looking at the field and
it looked gray and glom and I said, look at
the screen, and it looked bright and excited, it looked vivid.
It was set to vivid, so it was visually more
appealing than the actual reality. Therefore, you know, you're sitting
here and falling asleep watching his game, but you feel
more excited watching his vivid game on the screen. And
(17:52):
we were at the game. So the screen gives you
more clarity, more vivid, more life than the actual reality
we're living in. That's the truth. I pointed it out
to you.
Speaker 3 (18:03):
So the final thought to sort of wrap up Dan
Byer's very great, wonderful, awesome Ohio State Rose Bull.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
Day that I that I liked on social media. I'm
telling you I liked this somewhere now. People are people
are talking.
Speaker 3 (18:14):
It's Tucker on one side, it's uh, who's the girl
on the MSNBC, Rachel Maddow right in the middle, Damn Byer.
If you're at a game or a concert and you
find yourself looking at the big screen, is that a
lay mass move or is that why they have those
big screens? If you're Jerry's world in Dallas and you're
(18:35):
watching the game on the screen, is that is there
a thought of like what are we even doing here?
Speaker 1 (18:40):
Then it's a clearer picture. You get a zoomed in
video feed, it's brighter, and at that point you're just
there for the atmosphere, watching the screen.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
We've been to some pretty big fights together, Danny, and
we don't have nosebleed seats.
Speaker 1 (18:55):
We have good seats. But don't you still find yourself
looking at the big screen. Yeah?
Speaker 5 (18:59):
Sometimes I think, thank you switch you go back, sometimes
you switch back and forth. But even if you are
looking at the screen, you're you feel like you're part
of history still because there.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
You're in the room where it happens, the room where
it happened.
Speaker 6 (19:11):
Forty one likes on X of the video, not one
from one Steve Cavino on from no TikTok, no Twitter.
Speaker 1 (19:21):
I find that impossible because I brought it up to
you to Rich in the kitchen.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
It seems like Dan Byer's got a new favorite in
twenty three. All right, well, hey we got more coming
up here on CNR on Fox Sports Radio. Now, this
is a really fun one coming up next. Jack Buck,
the legendary father of current legend Joe Buck, gave his
son arguably the worst advice, not just his son young broadcasters,
(19:47):
because so many young broadcasters would go up to Jack Boka, Jack,
how do I how do I make it in broadcasting?
Speaker 1 (19:52):
And he would give them a line. And Joe talked
about it and he said it might be the worst
advice ever.
Speaker 3 (19:57):
So if you got bad ad from a boss, from
your dad, from your mom, from a friend, We're gonna
share some of the lamest, weakest, worst advice a lah
Jack Buck. Next right here on Fox Sports Radio, your butts,
Cavino and Rich. Now we're not TV weather man, but
we're both in the East Coast and know a thing
(20:18):
or two about driving in winter condition. Well, what's coming
to the East Coast you said earlier, like an Arctic
zoop bloom or something like.
Speaker 1 (20:23):
That the Arctic air man. Yeah, temperatures are dropping bless yeah,

That's tirac dot com the way tire buying should be.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
For the record, I did like Dan Buyer's stop it
TikTok post during the commercial break of the blimp No No,
No yesterday. It was the one of the blimp that
said Dan Buyer's a pimp on it the blimp at
the game yesterday. Rose Bowl Action. Rose Bowl Action is right.
So we're Cavino and Rich live from Los angeleside from
(21:47):
the tirack dot com studio. You're locked up at three
right now.
Speaker 3 (21:50):
Notre Dame Georgia fighting Irish Bulldogs locked at three almost halftime,
So way different than the uh barrage of thanks saw
on the first half of yesterday's game.
Speaker 1 (22:01):
Yeah, we'll keep you posted on that. Big thanks to

Speaker 3 (22:32):
Now this story that you and Danny g brought to
my attention, Yeah, this this is hilarious because I'm a
fan of Joe buck There's a lot of people.
Speaker 1 (22:41):
That get, you know, get a lot of crap.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
People get unnecessary hate, Guy Fieri, Dane Cook, who else
is on that list? Nickelback, Joe buck Well, Dan Cook's
kind of you know, creat.
Speaker 1 (22:53):
But how many times.
Speaker 3 (22:54):
Did Dane Cook make you laugh in the two thousands
Ryan twice? Come on, dude, he he was your mice comedian.
I'll never turn my back on people that I liked.
At one point, people loved Dang Cook.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
I'm a white guy. I love day Cook. Back in
the day Limp Biscuit got a lot of hate for
no reason. Maybe maybe good reason. I don't know. But
you're right. There's certain people, certain things that garner a
lot of unnecessary I would say Guy Fietti and Nickelback
are the top two answers. Yeah, and old guy Fiertti
does is good. Yeah, good things. Nice guy. Now, you're right.
(23:26):
Joe Buck is another one on that list. He really is.
And we've had brief encounters with the guy, you know
my recollection of Joe Buck. I remember we met him
in New York City, like at Sirius XM when we
were working there full time. And later that day he
was walking by our TV set we used to do
a TV show right in Times Square, like there right
(23:48):
there in the windows, and he stopped and waved at us.
Get and you're like, hey, Joe Buck just stopped and
waved us. That was nice. So I'm me E didn't
have to do that. Joe Bunk great broadcaster regardless, And
he talked about the worst advice his dad would give
to young broadcasters. Take a listen. Little kids would be like,
(24:11):
mister buck, I want to get in. I want to
get into broadcasting, and do it.
Speaker 8 (24:14):
Start smoking, kid, get your voice deeper. And I listened
to my early career, my highlights. It's like, and we
go into the fifth inning now as I and my
voice is cracking because I'm basically sound like I'm Peter
Brady going through puberty.
Speaker 1 (24:29):
So, uh, did you smoke?
Speaker 5 (24:32):
Hell?
Speaker 1 (24:32):
No, no, Oh you never smoked with your dad? You
looked up to him so much. Did I didn't need
to smoke, I said.
Speaker 8 (24:38):
I grew up in a booth that had the engineer smoking,
my dad's smoking, Mike Shannon smoking, the guy in the back, my.
Speaker 1 (24:45):
Uncle who wasn't really my uncle was smoking. I mean
I was. I was like in a.
Speaker 8 (24:49):
Smoker's lounge at an airport while they were broadcasting games.
And I'm a little eight year.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
Old like sucking this stuff in. It's amazing. I'm alive
right now. So well, he makes a funny point, though
we surround you didn't really have to smoke. We were
surrounded by a lot of smokers growing up. That is true.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
Do you ever think back how like your grandfather would
smoke in the car with the windows up.
Speaker 1 (25:11):
Dude, there was smoking a lot on planes, and I
believe that was courtesy of Andrew Marshand. Yeah, Andrew, thank
you very much. Joe buck on his show, and he
also makes another funny point too. Look, everybody, regardless of
broadcasting and podcasting, the first time you hear your voice,
maybe it was on an answering machine or something, or
(25:32):
on your voicemail, you hated the sound of your voice.
And when we listened back to our early tapes of
Cavino and rich our early shows, we sound like little
baby boys on speed, it really is ridiculous. And you know,
every broadcaster, how you ever hear like early Howard Stern,
(25:52):
Hey is Howard Stern here sounds like Kermit the Frog.
It's just how it is, and you grow into it.
So I think Joe's right there. You didn't need to smoke.
You sort of just grow into your voice as you
get older. Some people do, some people don't. You find
your voice, but that was some really bad and unhealthy
advice from Jack Buck, even though it made sense, like, yeah,
you sound like a little boy. Some of our best buds,
(26:16):
they're good personalities, and I don't want to call one
of our buddies out. My biggest criticism is I can't
stand his voice. It's too high. Some people got a
bad voice. Some people got a bad voice. Joe grew
into his. But the bad advice is start smoking, kid,
Start smiking, Start smoking kid. Your voice needs to get
(26:36):
a little deeper, a little more pleasant. And that brings
us to here on the Coveno on Rich Show, The
worst advice You've ever been told? The worst advice could
be at work, could be in your profession, could be
in sports. It could be who to bet on, what
to invest in, could be a relationship.
Speaker 3 (26:58):
I have relationship and work and all this. I've been
given a lot of bad advice.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
I think the worst advice ever and it's from people
your peers, right, because they don't know you'd be going
through relationship struggles with a new girlfriend, you know, young love,
that sort of thing, and you'd ask your buddy what
you should do, and they're like, buy her some flowers. Meanwhile,
this girl's checked out. She thinks you're a loser, you
already lost her, and you think flowers are gonna save
(27:25):
the day.
Speaker 5 (27:27):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
Like, that's the worst advice ever. It's never it's too
late at that point. You gotta buy flowers, You gotta
do all those nice things when they like you. When
they don't like you, it falls on deaf ears, deaf eyes,
and they lose respect for you. That's bad advice. And
I've always been given that advice from people who don't
know anything.
Speaker 3 (27:47):
I actually wrote down some of these because I've been
given bad advice so often.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Let's hear it. I was given bad advice by a
little league coach.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Me too, it was my dad. Yeah, yours first when
I was in little league. Yeah, and again, I love
baseball very very much. I love baseball. I still play
softball twice a week. Is I just I still feel like,
so you love softball as much as I love baseball.
Speaker 1 (28:14):
Yeah, I love baseball, So I refuse softball.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
Don't get in that debate. You're doing nothing. I'm doing something. Yeah,
I'm watching baseball, ripping line ripping line drives. What are
you doing sitting on the couch scratching your saggy ass.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
I had a baseball saying, you love Mexican food, but
you eat Taco bell better than you No, taco you
don't love Mexican food. You love taco Bell. Softball is
not baseball.
Speaker 3 (28:36):
It's the closest things if you like Mexican food, And
I said, have taco bell or a piece of white bread.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
What's closer. It's like telling me you love ice cream
but you eat froyo every day. Get out of my face.
I hate softball. So what was this advice you were guy? Yeah,
I want to.
Speaker 3 (28:50):
Strangle this guy the bad advice I got. Thank you, Dandy,
thanks for producing shut this guy up. I was told
by Little Lee coach. And I don't know if this
was where I grew up. I for all I know,
I would have been in the pros. I would have
been the I would have been David Wright instead of
David Wright. I was told like going opposite field meant
I just wasn't getting around.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
On the ball instead of going with the pitch.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
I had coaches that would emphasize, like pulling the ball
up right if we all did it literally, because you know,
like Aus, it was your dad, it was your friend's
stupid dad that didn't know a thing. I remember if
I would go opo instead of being like, oh, I
went with that outside pitch.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Oh, Richie, you're not getting around on the ball. I
gotta roll your hands over, get around on it.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
To me, every little kid in the eighties and nineties
where I grew up, if you went opo, it wasn't like, yoh,
he went with the pitch. What a great hitter it was.
You know she's not getting around on Yeah. And you're
young and impressionable. That's why it matters, because it sticks
with you. It really does, even though it's like, eh,
little league, you're young, who cares? But then again, philosophies change, right,
(29:55):
because back then we're hitting for average. Now people are
just hitting for home runs. Things are different. Because my
dad used to say, my dad would coach the team,
and my dad didn't know anything about baseball. My dad
was just a good dude.
Speaker 1 (30:06):
He was just being a good dad, right, But he
didn't know anything about coaching baseball, I should say. And
I remember him telling all the little kids and again,
we're little kids, so he's just going with what works
with the kids. He used to say, hey, get over.
Speaker 4 (30:20):
He he got to hit in the green, not in between.
Speaker 1 (30:24):
Hit in the green, and what does that even mean.
I don't even know. Hit it to the outfield, like
you got to hit for power, you know which. Back
then it's like man just just trying to hit level
level swing line drive, you know, swing level, Hit it
into the gap, get a nice hit. He hitting the green,
not in between. It's advice. So you got all these
(30:47):
little kids swinging for the fences because they're just trying
to lift it into the outfield, you know what I mean.
So which made no sense, but it could apply in
today's game because everyone just swings for defense.
Speaker 3 (30:58):
I have one more piece of bed little league advice.
Then I have real life examples, like not when we
were twelve.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
I think my dad was just trying to rhyme to
appeal to nine year old I remember when, you know,
I pitched in high school, and I pitching was my
favorite right even in my even my early twenties, I
was in like men's leagues. I love, you were more
of a belly ititcher. I'm gonna slam your head against
the table.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
We want to pitch, you know, I remember when I
was dB Danny g You remember when you were experimenting
with holding the ball in different ways, like for curveball sliders,
like you were just experimenting, be like pull the string
or pull the curtain and pull the curtain down breaking ball.
I remember saying, yeah, you know, if you if you
bury the ball in your palm but throw it with
(31:39):
the regular intensity, that's your change up. Yeah, And my
coach was like, no, no, no, what you do is
you do a really fast wind up. And second I remember,
and I remember telling my coach like, no, I'm pretty
sure I read in like a baseball magazine, like like
you know, and just sitting on your hand and the
pump or and you take a little velocitof He's like, no, no, no, no,
(32:00):
are you doing little circle as you do a fast,
intense wind up And then at the last minute you just.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Well you know why again we already made the point.
But they're just dads, they're not coaches. You're the worst
coach ever, right, the worst advice you've ever been told.
Speaker 3 (32:15):
When I first met you, you told me it's not
cheating on my girlfriend if I kept my socks on.
Speaker 1 (32:18):
I thought that was good advice in nearly two thousands.
In my defense, I thought that was appropriate advice for
the time for the time. So again based on the
Jack Buck to young broadcasters, smart start smoking, kid, What
is some other bad advice you've heard throughout your life.
We'll go around the room. We'll have some fun with it.
But first let's go to Dan Bayer for an update.
Speaker 6 (32:40):
What's up, dB, Yeah, guys, things shaping up at the
Sugar Bowl right now. Notre Dame has taking a thirteen
to three lead on Georgia. It was just a three
to three game a little while ago. Notre Dame kicked
a forty eight yard field goal to go up six
to three. On the ensuing possession, the Notre Dame defense
vents forced a fumble of Gunner stocked in the Georgia quarterback.
(33:04):
It was recovered at the thirteen yard line. On the
next play, Notre Dame cashed in with a touchdown. Riley
Leonard a thirteen yard touchdown pass to Bo Collins, and
just like that, Notre Dame is up thirteen to three
in the Sugar Bowl on Georgia with twenty seven seconds
to go until halftime.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Dan byran Kinnen, it was three to three. I saw
a Notre Dame lining up for the field goal. And
then I look back down Dan Buyer's side. If you blinked,
you may have missed that whole thing. Yes, it really
happened within a minute.
Speaker 1 (33:29):
Boom boom.
Speaker 6 (33:31):
So Georgia now in a ten, facing a ten point deficit.
They settled for a field goal. Earlier, they had a
big pass play that got him inside the ten. But
one of the players from Georgia, who's not suiting up,
you know, he's wearing the jersey but in jeans, was
jumping around so enthusiastically he bumped into the official who
was running down the sidelines, gave him a fifteen yard penalty.
(33:53):
So they weren't inside the ten. They were backed up
and had to settle for a field goal. And so
now Georgia it's going to half. They just end up
running the clock out. It's thirteen to three. Notre Dame
up on Georgia. Alabama quarterback Talen Milrose, entering the NFL draft.
Bailey's Zappi is going to start a quarterback for the
Browns against the Ravens on Saturday. Bengals say running back
(34:13):
Chase Brown and wide receiver T Higgins are questionable for
Saturday's game against the Steelers. Patrick Mahomes did not make
the AFC roster for the Pro Bowl games. The quarterbacks
are Josh Allen of the Bills, who's the starter, with
the Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow serving as
the backups if there actually was a game. Pistons guard
Jaden Ivy fractured his fibula I had surgery. He'll be
(34:34):
re evaluated in a month, but likely to miss the
rest of the regular season. Anthony Davi is doubtful for
the Lakers tonight and against Portland. Gymnast Simone Bile's name
Sports Illustrated sports Person of the Year guys, back to.
Speaker 1 (34:45):
You now, thanks TV, Thanks Dan.
Speaker 3 (34:47):
Can you know any other bed advice you want to
throw him before the break before we take some more feedback.
Speaker 1 (34:52):
No, but I'm thinking about how we grew up right
and how many parents told kids to get off the
computer or the video games because it's a waste of time.
Yet there was so many avenues to build a career
and build a life in those worlds in that field
that you know they were deterring you from at the.
Speaker 3 (35:11):
Time when social media first started. Yeah, exactly, we had
bosses that said don't talk about it on the air.
Don't go on social media. It's the comp it's your competition.
Speaker 1 (35:23):
Yeah, the philosophy was, if you're gonna say something funny
or you have a hot take, you say it on
our platform, not other people's plan.
Speaker 3 (35:31):
So for the first year or so, when everyone's getting
all these followers, we had bosses telling us don't.
Speaker 1 (35:36):
Go on there. That backfired exactly.
Speaker 3 (35:39):
So listen, we'll we'll take more of your feedback on
bad advice a Llah Jack Buck and when fifty hits
all coming up right here see NR on FSR.
Speaker 1 (35:54):
Rich. I'm surprised you haven't brought up that I told
you to stop doing vine videos because it would never
amount to any thing. You know what, you brought it up.
That was bad advice. Speaking of bad advice, there's a
million parents out there that told their kids, you're wasting
your time with all this YouTube nonsense. You get it
in the next mister beast, who, by the way, got engaged.
I know, tosolations Beast, missus, worst advice you've ever been given.
(36:18):
Based on the Jack Buck story. Again, we're Cavino and
Rich live from the tire rack dot Com studio. We're
gonna do a little old school in fifty hits but
two quick phone calls eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox,
Have you missed the story?
Speaker 3 (36:30):
Jack Buck essentially told his son Joe and other young broadcasters, Hey,
if you want to get into business, smart, start smoking cigarettes.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
It's good for your voice. Uh Josh and Ohio? What's
up in Hey guys?
Speaker 9 (36:42):
One game?
Speaker 10 (36:42):
Thanks Keag McCall. Just like you, I was coached by
other other people's dads and pee wee football. They told
me to put my head down and run through everything,
and thirty years later I probably had neck problems from it.
Speaker 1 (36:56):
Probably, like I said in our in our defense in
their defense philosophy, he's changed, safety measures changed, he's changed.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
But looking back at me, man, that was really cravy advice.
Uh Mike rerapped us up in Illinois. What's up, Bud?
Speaker 9 (37:09):
Oh man? This is uh Mike from Illinois, but not
originally from Illinois because I can't stand this damn snow,
but I uh, I want to say show.
Speaker 5 (37:25):
At seven eastern?
Speaker 1 (37:26):
What's up? Bud?
Speaker 9 (37:28):
Are you there?
Speaker 1 (37:29):
You were here? What's up?
Speaker 9 (37:30):
Oh? Yeah? I wanted to say congrat on the twenty
years together, Thank you, Thanks, I've been yeah, I've been
listening to you guys for years. I was stationed overseas
for ten years in Africa and used to listen to
your own line over there. So hey, congrats, but I
need to back up to the last hour. You guys
(37:51):
gave us a little bit of bad advice.
Speaker 1 (37:54):
Uh what's that?
Speaker 9 (37:55):
Yeah? You said, if we're in Jarrett's house and I
want to look at the jambo tron. If I'm in
Jerry's house right looking at the field of jambo tron
cheerleaders and nothing, I'm looking up at the ceiling making
sure they're damned.
Speaker 1 (38:12):
Things will fall on you right by the way.
Speaker 3 (38:15):
I was about to make fun of the guy, and
then he had this nice and here thing about how
he's listened to us, and he.
Speaker 1 (38:20):
Saved the call by kissing up to you. I know,
that's a great that's a great technique. Thank you, Mike.
I appreciate great technique. Steve here, Steve appreciates you. All Right,
let's go old school. It's fifty after club. There's a
suit y.
Speaker 4 (38:35):
What we're gonna do is go back back into time,
throwing it back for a Thursday. Old school went fifty.
That's fifty after CN r give you the time capsule
topic and we reminisce together.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
Yeah. So I think this was just based on a
meme that Danny G found. That's where we get our
news and our inspiration memes on social media. Cavino and
and let's be honest, an any millennial or gen exer,
anyone thirty to fifty something loves nostalgia like in an odd,
oddly ridiculous way. Yeah, that's why we throw it back
(39:13):
every Thursday, Old School in fifty hits, And it was
a question of the day. The question of the day
is what did you miss out on when it came
to your childhood? What do you feel you missed out on?
And there's a lot of random examples here on the show,
but we open it up to you is where we
get you involved Fox Sports Radio Nation. It could be
(39:34):
sports related, like maybe you're the typical kid who's mom
didn't let him play football. You hear that all the time,
by the way, it's on my listen. Yeah, I mean,
but you hear that. You'll see some big galute and
he's like, yeah, I did never played my mom wouldn't
let me. You're like, oh my good, So you missed
out on it. So I want to hear your stories.
(39:55):
Doesn't have to be sports related. Like we said, things
you feel you missed out on when it came to
your childhood. I'll give you one ahead, Action Park. I
grew up in New Jersey. You never went to Clash
Class Action Lustard Park. Honestly, it's the weakest because when
people find out I'm from New Jersey and they seen
the documentaries about Action Park, which was like a ridiculous
(40:18):
theme park adventure park in New Jersey, people like, did
you go? And I feel like embarrassed to say, Nah,
mom wouldn't let me. Then you were live for this
reason though, No, yeah, because my mom would be like,
you're not going with them, like ITA have friends and
other family member the hell no. My mom was like,
I love you too much to let you go there.
(40:40):
I want you to come.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Back, but I felt like I missed out as a kid. Well,
we'll take your feedback on a throwback Thursday. What did
you miss out on? We got more Kavin on Rich
Fox Sports Radio hang Time
