Such a great clip. Can't remember who he was down
there with? Am I right by saying salth pal Antonio.
I just remember that amazing white pompadoor Sal pal My
pal Sal pal Antonio. While we get your feedback rolling,
I do want to wish a special happy birthday. We
are celebrating Joe Flacco turning forty today, and we're talking
about the best backups, the best supporting cast members. But
(02:21):
I also want to wish a happy birthday to one
of my favorite dudes in his forties.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
Forty brings us joy every day, Dan Byer. Yeah, no, no, no,
I'm talking about AJ. We bring up.
Speaker 1 (02:37):
It's his birthday too.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
He turns forty nine today. Sorry DV.
Speaker 3 (02:41):
He did not make my list of fellow January sixteenth birthday.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Oh, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
He's pretty famously What about Ronney Mills SAP? Shout out
to Ronnie Mill's SAP today as well.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
I'll get I give that three booms.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
Do you remember the sports calendar when you were a kid.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Each day, Yes, Dizzy Dean was always listed on mine.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
AJ Foyd. Is he Dean?
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Where the January sixteenth one?
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Well, now it's a.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Dean, Ah, Not so sure. He brings the boom every day.
So we're bringing the book. You didn't bring Dan Byer
a double chunk chocolate chip, no chocolate cookie.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
I did not, but now I have to.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
So in honor of Floco's birthday, we're gonna talk about
the best backups in life, and it's not necessarily backup quarterback.
It's just that guy that's got your back, you know
who I think of. And you could say it was
a duo or a tandem, but Danny G when you
(03:37):
brought up run DMC before in our previous conversation, I'm
gonna stay down that route a little bit. And I
don't think a tribe called Quest would have been what
they were without Fife Doc because it's Q tip. Everybody
knows his Q tip, but you needed five to just
switch it up to go back and forth with, and
(03:57):
to me, he was that perfect backup due to make
them the nirvana of hip hop. A tribe call Quest
microphone check one too. What is this yo? You need
that guy?
Speaker 2 (04:08):
Based on what you just said, you referenced Bo Jackson
in a famous route.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Oh yeah, backups in sports, but also, like you said,
backups people that got your back in life. You know
what I thought you were gonna say, believe it or not,
I think you're gonna say, who's the Fresh Prince without
DJ Jazz Jeff, that's his guy, that's his like sort
of sidekick, that's his backup. That's his dude, doesn't does
the guy that doesn't get as much shine, but important.
You know, he also came up with that theme song
(04:33):
in like fifteen minutes. So I do think Fife Dog
was that perfect compliment to Q Tip in a tribe
call quest, that perfect second guy at backup, you know
you just said the theme song for Fresh Prince. You
probably know the story, I know, but you know it's
a fun one to share that it's a quickie. When
(04:55):
The Fresh Prince of bel Air became a huge show,
DC Jones, the legend who we recently lost as well,
legend Quincy Jones, had come up with a theme song
for The Fresh Prince of bel Air. And as legendary
as Quincy is, I mean, the guy behind generations of music,
(05:16):
I mean I even gained more respect for him when
I watched that We Are the World documentary and realize
that every A list musician just sweated Quincy Jones. I
gained more respect when I realized he did the Sanford
and Son theme. I'm like, seriously, I didn't know he
did that. So everything he did, the Fresh Prince theme
and jazzy Jeff and Will had come up with.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
In Westville, Ludolf, you have born and.
Speaker 1 (05:38):
Raised and they were like, Yo, you can't present this
to Quincy. He came up with a theme, and they're like, no, no,
we'll just go with the theme that Quincy came up with.
And then finally, I think it was Jazz who said no, no,
just show Quincy please, and Quincy Jones like, yeah, this
is great. The one I made I just sort of
put together and didn't care about. They almost didn't have
(06:01):
the legendary fresh Prince theme had not Will and Jazz
finally had the waveless enough to be.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Like, yeah, Quincy, the theme you can't yeah with.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
They said his was kind of like on the cornball side,
like you know, your average TV sitcom.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Speaking of cornballs, I feel like Will Smith's second hand
man backup in music is different than it was on TV.
I think in his music career, yeah, it was jazzy
Jeff Right, that was his guy. But on TV you
said it in our meeting, Danny G. Carlton was his
backup dude, that was that's the guy, right, that was
(06:35):
the guy.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
He was the huge co star of that show.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
And it's so odd because growing up as an eighties kid,
Alfonso Robiro was like the coolest kid going tap dance kid.
He did all the Michael Jackson moves. He's in that
Pepsi commercial. He was on silver Spoons, he was break
dancing all the time. And then he took on that
cornball ball roll and it sort of like created a
stigma for him. But he was still the bat to
(07:00):
Will Smith on that show.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Man play the straight Man.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
Yeah, yeah, so who is that guy? It could be
the second string backup on your team, that dude who
steps in, that dude who delivers. But he's not he
doesn't have the main character energy anymore because Flacco did.
He won a super Bowl. But he's the perfect backup now, Cove.
I think of some of our old football cards.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Bubby Bristo, oh yeah, Bobby Bristol for sure, Vince Evans,
Frank Wright one I wrote down more modern.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
How about Nick Foles? Nick Foles, big Nick stepped in
for Carson Wentz.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, without a doubt, that's a great one think about.
You know, in the twenty tens, there was always a
team that had some fits Magic. He was a great
backup because he was better as a backup and everyby
he's one of the smartest guys ever in the NFL. Yeah,
he was one of those guys who it was like,
way up there, you felt very comfortable if Fitzmagic was
(07:56):
your backup go to guy, you know what the best
backup in NFL history is. Is this a real answer?
Are you just messing? I'm being real all right this year.
I know I'm such a I'm like, I know you're
doing a show with the comedian over here, but no,
this is a real answer. Steve Young. To think that
Steve Young wasted the eight get this. This is interesting
because he's a Hall of Famer, one of my favorites.
We all know Steve Young, obviously, but when you put
(08:19):
a perspective, we talk about how man Jordan Love had
to sit for a couple of years, Aaron Rodgers sat.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
For a couple of years.
Speaker 5 (08:26):
Another there, Steve Young sat as a backup for five years,
and those five years were age twenty six to thirty.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Yeah, that's insane.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
To think that.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Steve Young could have been even more insane, he said
he again, then he started, then he sat that he's
and then finally Bill Walsh and then later Sea for
We were like, all right, Steve Young, but there was
a time where Steve Young could have been a pro
bowler on any other team, but for years. When the
Bucks trade him to the Niners, remember Bill Walsh was thinking,
(09:03):
I want to move to Young quicker, but then Montana
had the fans and ownership wanting Joe Montana, but Steve Young.
If you're going to talk backups, the fact that that
guy was a backup for five years, Oh, that's exactly
what we're talking about in honor of Joe Flacco again,
Anthony Richardson injury prone. You need this guy, like, who
are the best dudes in supporting roles in sports and entertainment?
(09:26):
Who comes to mind for you? Maybe sidekicks, it's just
basically supporting role, but they deliver and step up when
you need him. Eight seven, seven ninety nine on Fox,
we gave you our answers. Let's take a few phone calls.
And also it's up to Jimmy. What's up Jimmy Texas?
Speaker 6 (09:42):
Y know what's up at them? Almost how you'll do
it today? Hey, real quick, I do have to say
a couple of things. I just wanted to say that
Cavino or Patreon dot com slush Cavino and rich the
Bobby Ucker scene with him in Andrea the Giant. I'd
always seen the gift, but I never knew what he
said until y'all showed it today. Yeah, where he tells Andre,
can you get your foot off my shoulder? And then
(10:03):
he chokes him out.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Yeah, it's hilarious. We played it this morning on our
on our Patreon podcast. The whole clip is WrestleMania three
with Bob Buker and he's interviewing Andre. Out of nowhere,
Andre comes behind Bob Buker puts his hand on Youkr's
shoulder and it looks like his hand is of a month.
He says, can you get your foot off? And that
famous clip of Ono Giant jokingly strangling Bob.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
His hand looks so bad. That's why head looks like
a little doll ahead, you.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Know, his his hands cover his entire neck.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It's wild.
Speaker 6 (10:38):
To bring Dan Byer back up on the list. I
was going to tell you that I heard Dan Byer
was the one that actually gave Kasey case Them the
story about Fluffy passing in between the Beast songs. So
he's back to number one.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
He's back to number one.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
The famous clip of the Casey Case of outtakes was
because of Dan Byer.
Speaker 2 (10:54):
We're starting the rumor. Yes, thank you, thanks Jimmy, Oh, Jimmy,
who's your backup?
Speaker 6 (10:58):
By the way, thank ka ke Kate Keenum is my backup?
I think that guy is. I'm a Texan fan. He
did great for us to get from Minnesota. I think also,
so he's my backup.
Speaker 2 (11:07):
Yeah, he's even got his own TV commercials.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Now, you know, could you could argue that if you
look around in the National Football League and say, who's
the guy that wasn't when you say backup? So he
called the call up? He called to call up about
Casey Caseum and case Keenum. That's a tongue twister. So
when you think about this category could go in all
directions because if it's people that were never really intended
(11:31):
to be the star, but they were just great. Some
people are great stars at playing the tambourine, as Chris
Rock would say, some people are great at it. If
you talk about athletes that were never really designed to
end up where they were. A guy that's about to
be the sixty million dollar man, Rock perty, what's a
(11:54):
backup to Jimmy Garoppolo that we thought would never play
in the NFL?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
What remember we were at the game. Happened to be
at that game.
Speaker 1 (12:00):
Kavino and I were with some of our buddies a
weekend away, and as a Niners fan, I'm like.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Who's in there, brock perty, Oh, yeah, that's our backup.
Speaker 1 (12:09):
The guy's about to be one of the richest quarterbacks
in the NFL. And as a Mets fan, I don't
know if people really know this. Texas Ranger multi time
cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was a shortstop that
was converted into a pitcher and only got an opportunity
to start because the Mets were so bad and needed
spot starters. And they're like, you know what, Jacob deGrom,
(12:34):
That's why I'm gonna give prompts to a sports guy.
Speaker 2 (12:37):
Let's hear it. Fill in Frank Iola. I like Frank.
I like that guy a lot.
Speaker 1 (12:41):
Frank I Saol is a really nice guy because his
whole role is hey, so and sows off on TV
and some sports show at our old network. He steps
in and it's like, you don't even miss.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
The other guy, the ultimate backup.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
He's like the ultimate Hey, who's calling out?
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yeah, Frank, you guys are Dan Patrick's backup.
Speaker 1 (12:59):
Yeah, And you know what the key is like to
be able to hold your own you know, and and
and really just do it. The reality is the guy
here that not only is the number one update guy
has his own show on the weekend the birthday, I know,
the birthday himself for every single show on this network
has his own show. Let me tell you, dp me.
(13:20):
When I hear him, it's it's you know, he's he's
one of the best out there for sure.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
Let's go to Josh and Ohio. What's up, Joy Josh?
Speaker 7 (13:29):
Hey, guys, Happy Thursday. So my backup is more of
the all time best hype man legendary group. There would
be no rock rap genre without them. Flavor Play gotta
give it up.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
I mean, he's just yeah, the original hype man.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Yeah, we've had him on our show at Radio Row.
Speaker 5 (13:50):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
No, there's there's no better to ever do it. And
he's still doing it.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
He was playing the Duke's Mayo mascot during the Duke's
Mayo Bowl. Do you know that? He was so funny.
It was like, what's that Fox show? The mass singer
he was parading around as the mascot and that's pretty awesome.
Speaker 4 (14:07):
He gained a lot of traction during the Olympics remember
because he was helping Olympians to pay for bills.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
I think he's always in the news for something Flavor Flavor,
So any other backups come to mind in the world
of sports and entertainment. As the meme goes, do you
think our parents in the eighties and nineties would have
ever thought the most likable Americans are Snoop Dogg in
flavor flave? No?
Speaker 2 (14:28):
Never, never, ever, No.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
It was a decade ago, guys that Ohio State lost
to their quarterback JT. Barrett, who was actually taking over
for Braxton Miller, and they had to turn to Cardile
Jones in the Big Ten championship game, which they dominated
Wisconsin and then ended up getting into the College Football
Playoff and winning a National championship. Cardil Jones then was
(14:50):
the start of the next year, but they decided to
go back to j. T. Barrett because the offense just
ran better. But during those three games, Cardil Jones let
Ohio State to a national champion.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
He answered, dB, and you know, if you want to
talk about NFL backups, I'll give you a hint. We
already shouted out Nick falls backup quarterback to win a
Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Yeah, that's a great answer.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
I want you to go back to your childhood. He
sort of resembles your dad because of the mustache. My dad,
Yanni Yanni, No, y not Dennis, Jeff Garcia, Rick Rude,
Jeff Hosteler.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
There you go.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Phil went down and the Giants still found the way
to win that Super.
Speaker 4 (15:29):
Bowl, and don't tell me. Al Davis then went and
paid him to be a starter. I remember when he
went to the Raiders. I'm like, oh, I don't know
if this is the best decision. Hostetler, all right, Mike
and Ohio, wrap it up, buddy.
Speaker 6 (15:41):
Boy, Hey, what's the best backup movie?
Speaker 7 (15:48):
A TV has got to be done?
Speaker 2 (15:52):
I mean, I'll never ever ignore her.
Speaker 1 (15:54):
There's always a debate amongst our pals of are you
a mister Furley guy or a mister Roper guy. I
am very adamant when it comes to being a mister
Furly guy. Yeah, don Knots made everything funny. I think
I think that's a great answer. But I think I
think of Jack Tripper's sidekick, because Don Knots did always
(16:15):
play that sidekick role, right Andy Griffith Three's company. But
Larry Larry was Jack's backup, that was his wingman right there,
Larry Dallyopolis, Larry Dallas, Kim.
Speaker 4 (16:25):
Believe we've done this segment, Coveno, and you've not included
your favorite NFL backup of all time to Rod or
as we call him, Tyrod Taylor.
Speaker 1 (16:34):
You know, I always thought he had more game than
than he delivered on. Yes, I thought he was good.
I really did like him, and I always paid close
attention because my brother was a Bills fan and I
just always liked how he played. So, yeah, he was
one of my favorite backups for sure.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Cove.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
You ever see you know how Colin does that segment.
I love where it's like blind stats, where he doesn't
tell you who the guy is and you're like, wow,
those stats are better or worse than I thought. I
think recently all like Tarat Taylor's stats against someone that's
a legend, and it's like you he had some years
where he he was pretty decent.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Yeah he was.
Speaker 1 (17:08):
He was a slick player. I always enjoyed he was
fun to watch, you know, so I did that. That
really would be my answer as far as who was
my favorite backup quarterback? You're right, DNYG, that is my answer.
Uh eight seven seven ninety nine l Fox, We'll take
a few more phones. What about what about singers? I
know there was a documentary about backup singers. The best
backup singer is that dude from Mariah Carey song, Remember
(17:32):
the song when she did I'll be There and then
some other guy. He was just a backup. He's like,
I'll be there a comfort you. That guy he.
Speaker 2 (17:40):
Was just her backup dude.
Speaker 1 (17:41):
Really yeah, and he just tore he just owned that
whole part of the song and it became legend. They're saying,
I just looked it up. You're talking Lorenz Trey Lorenz. Yeah,
that's the that's the guy.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Is that the guy?
Speaker 1 (17:55):
Is that his name with? Yeah, with Mariah Carrey, that's dude. Yeah,
that dude was asked he was her backup.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
So yeah, he came out with a hit song of
his own after that.
Speaker 1 (18:03):
From what I understand, Cheryl Crowe is considered one of
the more successful backup singers. She She was on Michael
Jackson songs and a bunch of stuff you might not
even know. And Cheryl crow then became well, you know,
along those lines. Luther Vandross was a big backup singer.
Speaker 2 (18:18):
Huge backup.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
He's on so many songs, dude, look it up, he's in.
He's in more songs than you would even know. You know,
you know Sea was a backup singer for Jamir Koy.
How about Tupac was a backup dancer for for uh
diggable planets dig I mean digital underground digital. I was
like I knew I wasn't saying right, digital underground dance
(18:42):
nothing with trouble. Yes, he was Linda Ronstadt's backup band
where the Eagles, right, Like that's insane, right, go to
the phones, wrap it up. Greatest backups in honor of
Joey Flacco. Uh, Tim, who again really shows his value
(19:02):
as a backup Texas well. I said to you before,
I said, you know, on a team with Anthony Richardson,
who you know is prone to miss a couple snaps
or a game here there to have a veteran that
still seems to have it, and Flack said he still
wants to play a few more years. He turns forty today,
and uh, you know, following the Tom Brady blueprint of
I'm gonna play into my forties, he has a Super
Bowl champ.
Speaker 2 (19:22):
What's up? Tim?
Speaker 6 (19:24):
Hey, hey guys, Thursday back at you man Patrick Mahomes'
rookie season when he was backing up Adlex Miscount.
Speaker 1 (19:31):
No, the goal was always to eventually go to him.
I think it has to be someone that came out
of note Tom Brady was a backup Tom Brady on
the Tom Brady the uh the new the new phrase
to the Wally Pip right, because you could say lou
Gerrigg is the ultimate because he came.
Speaker 2 (19:47):
At him back up and took it. You know, Homes
was like sixth overall, wasn't he? Yeah, Mahomes, there was
the air apparent. You know what it is.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
There was an intention to you don't want to get
bled sowed. There was never an intention to go to
Tom Brady early on, which is why I agree with
Kavin one hundred percent. Moving forward the phrase you got
Wally pipped. I know that's more of a sports phrase anyway,
but you know, Luke Garry Gallypip. You want to keep
that legacy and story alive.
Speaker 2 (20:12):
I agree. So I don't want to talk out of
both sides of my mouth, but I'm much more modern
day one.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
You don't want to be bled, so I mean, and
it's you know they talked about the roast and everything.
So let that happen back that really valuable backup could
be the guy that takes your job. Yeah, that's really
what Let's say hello to Mark and wrap it with
him in Santa Monica. What's up man?
Speaker 6 (20:33):
Hey, guys, love the show.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Thanks man, I hope you're staying safe, buddy.
Speaker 7 (20:37):
Thanks.
Speaker 6 (20:38):
Best backup all time and I'm not even a Dolphins
fan has to.
Speaker 8 (20:41):
Be Earl Moral.
Speaker 7 (20:42):
Bob Greasey goes down Earl More leads him to undefeated season,
and Greasy comes back and wins the Super Bowl.
Speaker 1 (20:48):
You know, I, I'll be straight up honest with you.
I didn't realize. I didn't realize that was sort of
the story there.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
Crap job by people not carrying the Earl Morals story over,
you know from like you talk about keeping a legend.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Can I tell you a lot of people thank you, dB.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I pride myself on knowing so many dumb fun facts
about the NFL. I feel like the NFL is my strength.
I didn't realize that he started most of the season.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
My fun fact is that the Dolphins had to play
the AFC Championship game on the road that year because
they didn't give home field to the best record. Fact,
so they had to go to they were unbeaten, had
to go to Pittsburgh to win the AFC Championship.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
Yeah, that's crazy.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
Didn't lose a game yet somehow found their way on
the road in the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
Not to be all over the place, because we're gonna
move on to other stuff. But how do you feel
about Roger Goodell saying that they may they may, you know,
fiddle with home field in the wildcard round?
Speaker 2 (21:39):
You like that idea? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (21:41):
I like the way the playoffs are now, but I agree.
I like the division winners and the wildcards. But if
the wildcard is thirteen and four or fourteen and three
and the division winners ten and seven, I think home
field should be the one adjustment they made.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Yeah, winning a division is good enough for a playoff,
birth you shouldn't get a home game with it.
Speaker 2 (21:58):
You know what? Agreed? One hundred percent, Thank you, dB.
Speaker 1 (22:00):

Take a listen to Trey Lorenz backup singer Takeover.
Speaker 8 (23:32):
Who that boy good?
Speaker 2 (23:35):
He gets no credit? Huh oh.
Speaker 4 (23:38):
He had record companies trying to outbid each other after
this performance.
Speaker 1 (23:44):
It was such a good performance. Again, Mariah carries backup
singer Tray Lorenz that the live version became a single
thanks to that performance, thanks to his MTV Unplugged. Yeah,
that was insane. So we're talking about the greatest backups
in honor of Joe Flacco's fortieth birthday.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
He really is.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
He was a great starter, super Bowl champion, but really
embraced a role of backup, a role that he's great at.
I think it's a perfect fit for him, especially at
this age. And you never know what happens with Anthony Richardson,

Speaker 2 (24:56):
Man.
Speaker 1 (24:57):
Sometimes you need a good backup. You got a sweet
jacket you like by two of them. You need a backup,
nice pair of sneakers. See these bad boys. I'm rocking
right now. I got a backup pair because I like
him so much. You need a good back Not to
be crude, Yeah, do you ever have a backup woman
in your life?
Speaker 2 (25:14):
This guy? What man?
Speaker 1 (25:17):
I'm telling your wife, I'm not saying now, like when
you were like da sort of dating and stuff you
never had, like you never had like, oh, you would
have a backup plan.
Speaker 2 (25:25):
Maybe I'll say that instead.
Speaker 1 (25:28):
Yeah, that would that would be a nicer way to
say it. One's gonna give you the end the backup girl.
In honor of Joe Flacco, who else comes to mind
to wrap it up. It's old school when fifty hits.
We got to talk to this Russell Wilson story. Any
other final thoughts Jerry Springer style. I think I'm a
good I'm good. You know what I'm good too? Can
I can I just go off on something before we
go to Dan Buy for an update and talk about buzzkills.
(25:52):
I'm following this Mets Pee a Lonzo story. It's a
wild one, it is, and because he's playing himself out
of options, and he's playing him out of legacy and
out of relevance. And I'm not saying the Mets should
roll out the red carpet, and I'm not saying Pete
shouldn't go after what he deserves. He thinks in free agency.
(26:12):
I do think Pete has some le likes to stand on,
though I feel like his goony, goofy reputation is getting
in his way. The dude has more home runs than
Aaron Judge in that span. First Baseman came in clutch
for your team.
Speaker 2 (26:26):
Listen.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
He wants to be a Met. He's a good rally guy.
He's a home run king, he's run derby guy. He's
a postseason hero. This year, the home run against the
Brewers and Devin Williams, and then why is he not
getting that respect? That's what I'm saying. Let me read
some of the quotes from s n Y or Old
Stomping Grounds, the Mets network in New York. The Mets
(26:46):
now consider Pete Alonso signing.
Speaker 2 (26:48):
Elsewhere as the most likely outcome. Yeah, I saw that
right before the show.
Speaker 1 (26:53):
The team genuinely loves Alonso as a person and as
a player, and they hoped to come to an agreement,
but the sides have not come close on the years
and dollars. It's now clear that the Mets are acting
with the expectation that Alonzo's time in Queen's is over.
The teams infield will now likely emphasize youth and versatility,
(27:16):
Mark Vientos, Batty Mauricio, some of these young dudes, with
the hopes of possibly acquiring Vladdie Guerrero Junior. Yeah, but
this year, because that was the plan for like a
year for that would be a trade. Now a free
agent next year, so then they're really going to be
scrambling to get him. But here's my question, though, unless
you're that far apart and listen, I'm always team player
(27:40):
not on the side of the team, because listen, why
would you side on behalf of billion dollar teams and
not the individual. But Pete Alonso so at the metsden
in the postseason last year, and I'm not saying they're
guaranteed anything this year. The Phillies and Braves are in
their division, the Dodgers are in the NL. There's other
great teams. Dan Byers, Brewers are always in the mix.
But if you have Juan Soto, Lindoor, Vientos, who you
(28:04):
realize will probably come into his own this year, Brandon Nimo,
who's an All Star, the Mets are shaping up to
be a pretty Mets signed Winker that Jesse Winker, who's
a great clubhouse guy.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Seven and a half mil this year.
Speaker 1 (28:15):
That was the latest stuff. So so when you see
a team with Neimo, Lindor the acquisition to Soto, Mark
Vientos is on his way to becoming, in my opinion,
a star. He saw he was the best Met in
the postseason, Like, why unless the offer is so substantially
more somewhere else, why would Alonzo not want to be
(28:36):
part of that? He is on pace to break every
met team record. And if the Mets were to somehow
win a World Series in the next five years, when
Alonzo's there, he'd be a legend. He'd have his number retired,
he'd be the guy. I don't see. Well, what you're
saying now is what I didn't see how that Jan
Soto didn't want to be a Yankee because it's a business.
He how could he not want to be part of
(28:58):
that legacy they're about to win. But he could be
the next great dude. But if he could be, you
know what I mean? He could no, because it's his business,
and there's a different for their value. There's a difference
there because Wan Sota is not a lifer Yankee. Wan
Soto had been on three team but he could have been.
Speaker 5 (29:13):
No.
Speaker 1 (29:13):
But I'm saying Wan Soto had already jumped around multiple teams,
and Wan Soto played one year. Those things matter. They
must not matter as much to him as the bottom
dollar here, what his value is. I do think that
he's not being treated fairly in this. I think he's
I think he is trying to fight for what he deserves.
I like he's an underrated guy. I like your analogy,
but not because Juan Soto played one year with the Yankees.
(29:37):
He wasn't home answers the same. But it's a business
what I'm saying, he wasn't homegrown talent. The Yankees have
Monument Park and a million legend. In your argument, how
could you not want to be a part of this?
My argument is, with very few legends in history, Pete
Alonzo had a trajectory of if the Mets somehow found
a way, he'd be he He's like not shot, He's
(29:59):
only he's so shy of the Mets all time home run.
Speaker 2 (30:02):
Record, Like he's so close.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Dan byers, you don't see that. Ped A Lonzo as
a Met is like does more for him personally. Also
like if Dan Dan if he goes to play for
the Angels or I don't know the Cubs, or you
don't think peter A Lonzo's it's over, like his lore
is over.
Speaker 3 (30:23):
Like he's just another you know, mid level slugger. Yeah,
I agree in that point. I just don't know, like
when you're in the midst of your career and where
you're playing and who you are, I don't know if
those things matter. I think they matter to us, and
they may matter at the end of your career. I
don't know if they matter now, could be wrong, but yeah,
to your point, yeah, he's more of a more value
(30:45):
with the Mets and how anybody would look at pee
Alonzo than elsewhere.
Speaker 1 (30:49):
I truly believe that ped Alonzo is the type of
guy that doesn't get the respect that he deserves because
he's a goofy kind of dude.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
That's the truth.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
There's nothing flashy or fancy or cool about him. But
he does his job, he does it well, and he's
the type of guy.
Speaker 3 (31:06):
Man.
Speaker 1 (31:06):
I wish the Yankees had him. I'd take him over
col Schmidt any day of the week. Well, you know what,
let's go to DB's update and then we got to
talk some Russ and some you know, dudes that don't
know their buzzkills.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
What's up dbate guys.
Speaker 3 (31:18):
Maybe fitting because it's the perfect transition on the passing
of Bob Yuker. Bob Buker called his final game for
the Brewers in that Mets wild Card game when Pete A.
Lonzo broke the hearts of many in Milwaukee, including Bob Yuker.
This is what it sounded like is Uker signed off.
And I think I even mentioned it then that it
(31:39):
just sounded different. It sure did. This is Bob Buker
signing off and what is now his last broadcast of
his career and life.
Speaker 8 (31:47):
Well, New York down they did it, and the crew, well.
Speaker 2 (32:00):
We'll have it in here tonight.
Speaker 1 (32:04):
Really a crushing end to what was a fabulous season
for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Speaker 2 (32:09):
I'm telling you that one had some sting on it. Wow.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
Yeah, yeah, Dan, that's heartbreaking. It is now as a
Mets fan, I'm like, man, I wish he didn't hit that.
That is so sad, dude.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Yeah, yeah, it truly is.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
And even because of the call, you thought to yourself,
is he going to be back next year?
Speaker 1 (32:32):
Does he know?
Speaker 3 (32:32):
Is he going to retire? Not thinking that we would
lose him at the time. But yeah, that's how it
sounded on the Brewers radio network. Bub you are passing
away at the age of ninety. There is a bunch
of news guys in the NFL world. Let's quick run
that down. Texans running back Joe Mixon didn't practice today
because of an ankle injury, questionable to face the Chiefs.
The Ravens didn't have Zave Flowers on the practice fields
(32:54):
again today because of his knee injury. His status for
Sunday's game in Buffalo is up in the air. David
Monto good to go for the Lions Saturday night against
the Commanders. Washington will have linebacker Bobby Wagner on the
field despite being limited this week because of an ankle injury.
Kellen Moore is now the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia
Eagles and the Cowboys today requested permission to speak with
(33:14):
more about their head coaching vacancy. More once a Cowboys
player and assistant in Dallas. Jets interviewed Steelers offensive coordinator
Arthur Smith and Texans oh See Bobby Slowick for their
head coaching vacancy. The twenty twenty five Genesis Invitational will
not be played at Riviera Country Club next month in
the Pacific Palisades in California because of the wildfires. The
PGA Tour will hold the event on February tenth through
(33:37):
the sixteenth at an alternate location. Live Golf has reached
a multi year broadcast deal with Fox Sports, with more
than half of the league's events appearing on Fox Sports.
Speaker 6 (33:45):
One.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Nuggets sentt Nicola Yokich leads all Western Conference players in
voting for the NBA All Star Game. Steph Curry has
passed Luka Doncic for second in voting All Star Game
taking place in San Francisco. That's in backcourt voting for
Steph curry SGA number one.
Speaker 1 (33:59):
Right now, back to you, No, thank you, Dan Bayer,
Happy birthday, thanks to me, Kavin, owner at Schnell. Listen,
before we get out of here, we got to talk
about buzzkills and whether or not those buzzkills in life.
That guy at the office, that woman in your apartment complex,
that person that you played sports with, do they know
(34:22):
when they're a buzzkill? There's always that one guy on
the team. Yeah, do they know? I always wonder that,
Like I played softball on a team where I know
you can make fun of it, just Rex softball, But
there was one guy where I'm like, this guy's just
bad energy.
Speaker 7 (34:35):
Does he know it?
Speaker 1 (34:37):
Well, there's a story about a very famous player that
you know, and he apparently is that guy and doesn't
seem to know it. And that's the wild thing. Listen,
being self aware is important. Not everyone's self aware, Not
no one is one hundred percent self aware. But I
know I'm a yappy, talkative buffoon. I'm aware of this.
You know that you're self centered. So I've been told
(34:59):
we all know our tendencies. We know these things. But
does this guy know NFL superstar a quarterback. We'll get
to it next.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
More Cavino Rich right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
I want to see Benina apple Bum. She must have
been hot. But you need that contrast. That's what Fife
Dog was man, that sidekick, that backup, that Joey Flacco
to the tribe. Covino and Rich Fox Sports Radio. Dan
(35:40):
Byer's birthday celebration, also Joey Flacco's during the crucial spot
and Monsey both jumped out of a cake. Yeah that
was awesome, even good noosed tassels by the way, Yeah yeah.
Now we keep teasing this buzzkill thing. But a quick reminder,
tomorrow we do a little We got five on it.
(36:01):
We got weekend hobnobbing what you need to watch in
the world of sports and entertainment. We do it every Friday.
We'll get you ready for the weekend. But right after
the show, in ten minutes, we go live on Fox
Sports Radio's YouTube page with our bonus show. Over promised,
we talk about fictional sports heroes in honor of Bob Buker.
Speaker 2 (36:19):
You mean Harry Doyle. Yeah, in honor of Harry Doyle.
Speaker 1 (36:23):
So fictional sports heroes on over Promised plus, we play
a game on over promised.
Speaker 2 (36:28):
Terrible this. I'm gonna fail. I feel it.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
It's name you get an emotion, We get a emotion
about Bob Buker. Name that baby star. Playoff the bar,
Name that baby star before they were big NFL stars.
Playoff Edition. We're playing that and Rich's playoff picks on
over promised Fox Sports Radios YouTube page. I'm so bad
at this. By the way, I'll give you an example,
Danny J. If you show me a baby picture or
(36:53):
a childhood photo of Rock Purty, Matthew Stafford, anyone.
Speaker 2 (36:58):
I don't see it. Other people look.
Speaker 1 (37:01):
At it and say, oh, look that's uh, oh, that's
poop and a cool you can tell who it is.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Oh, that's definitely uh.
Speaker 4 (37:06):
What if it's a baby picture of one of those
ig models all over your phone? Back then he was
known as Poopa Nakoula God Sam, play the rim shot
on yourself.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
That's a good one.
Speaker 1 (37:18):
But I'm terrible at this game. So play along and
watch for yourself and let us know how you do again.
Fox Sports Radio is YouTube page. If you're listening, watch it.
If you're watching, listen, it's all free. Just search over
promised with Covino and Rich and let us know how
you did at Covino and Rich at Fox Sports Radio.
Right hashtag over promise. So buzzkill not you buzzkills out there?
(37:39):
Do you know your buzzkills? When you're the guy that
goes to the party and talks to no one and
has a frown on the whole time, do you know
you're the buzzkill? Yeah, you're the squid word. If you
have a family member who shows up for Thanksgiving, they
don't talk to anyone, They just complain and they're like,
do they know they're the buzzkill?
Speaker 2 (37:58):
At work?
Speaker 1 (37:59):
The person that really never gets along with anyone, they're
never invited to the happy hour, they're just sort of
do they know they bring down the vibe? And this
comes up because Danny g hit us up with an
article about Russell Wilson, and the reality is Russ could
(38:19):
very well be the guy that doesn't realize, oh, I'm
rubbing people the wrong way. Apparently he rubbed everybody the
wrong way. He's no Johnny gilt Johnny Gilbert.
Speaker 2 (38:30):
He rubs people the wrong way.
Speaker 4 (38:32):
There's a former former NFL player saying that we know
this happened in Seattle, and now there's a report saying
that some of the locker room in Pittsburgh, but we.
Speaker 2 (38:41):
Know what happened in Denver too.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
So if teammates on a winning team in Seattle, and
clearly we know what happened in Denver, if Russ just
doesn't have the ability to, I guess you would say,
like make friends, be one of the guys, or if
that's just something he struggles with and they're saying it's
happening in Pittsburgh again, is that correctable or is that
just like, hey man, you're a great player and maybe
(39:04):
a good dude, but you're just never that guy. It
sounds ridiculous, But the Mets signed Jesse Winker today. Yeah,
isn't it very clear guy like him is a clubhouse guy.
I think the Mets have been focused on Alonzo, I know,
but I'm saying they're David right, you need that guy.
Speaker 2 (39:22):
There are guys.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
On teams, there's women on sports teams that it's clear
they bring down the mood. See maybe somewhere in their
life that's the role they just leaned into. Everyone has
to find where they fit in and figure out their role.
And if they weren't bringing the fun and bringing in
the vibes, the good vibes, maybe it's like, well, this
(39:46):
is where I kept my negative attention from from being
the negative Norberto from being that guy. But even in
that press conference with wasn't it with Pickens when he
asked him, do you feel optimistic about the team movie?
Speaker 2 (39:59):
He's nope. Yeah, He's like, you're talking about our offense
with same quarterback coming back?
Speaker 1 (40:04):
He was like no, and it was it was odd.
I was like, I didn't even know how to interpret that.
But now that this story has come out, it's like, well, okay,
then it was obvious. I mean, the problem is Russell Wilson,
and he seems like such a good dude. But at
the same time, when you see how his former teammates
talk about him in Seattle and you hear what they
have to say, like, he never vibed with anybody. It
never felt like a true cohesive locker room. Russ never
(40:26):
brought that vibe. The rest of the guys didn't get him,
and that is just I just wonder, and it's something
to ask yourself.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
It's more of an open ended question. Think about it.
Speaker 1 (40:34):
I don't think they do that guy or girl at work.
That's a buzzkill. Do they even know they're the buzzkill?
Speaker 2 (40:41):
Probably not?
Speaker 1 (40:42):
Probably not Right with that thought, we get to overpromise
next until then or even there, Chie baby, you and
the over Promised Land
