last night. They're back in the series. The Timberwolves got

the Oklahoma City Thunder. I don't think we should be surprised.
It is the NBA, and while the lottery may not
be rigged and the NBA may not be rigged, people
saw Scott Foster's doing Game three. All looks like it's
going to be a Nicks wins the series fixer. But
I also think that the NBA did not want two
series to go three to zero and have an NBA

Finals start June fifth. They do have a contingency plan,
but I don't know if they have a contingency plan
this year because they were running promos for the final
start June fifth. But in previous years and when I
covered the NBA Finals, there was a contingency plan if
the series were to end early, that the Finals would
be moved up a few days to accommodate everything. But

June fifth is when the Finals start, and now I
think that is going to stick. Considering where we are
with the series right now, Minnesota trailing two one to
Oklahoma City and the Knicks back in the series, but
still down two to one to the Indiana Pacers. You
know what this playoffs don't have or these series don't have.
They don't have Lebron, James Bye, they don't have Steph Curry,

by oh me, don't have Kevin Durant, Bye, don't have
Giannis and Tetakumpo, A lot of big names that are
No Nikolaiokich, He's goodbye. Last year we had a scenario
where we were wondering if Jason Tatum was a superstar
and if jaln Bron was to that level. We did

have Luca against Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolvesics ended up
beating the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals last season,
but it was again a conference finals without Lebron, without
Steph Curry, without Kevin Durant, without Nikolay Okicic, without Jannison, Tetakumpo,
without Joel Embiid, all these without Sorry Kawhi.

In the playoffs. No James Harden. And the reason I
bring this up is I've always wondered what the NBA
is going to look like when Lebron leaves, what's it
going to be like when Steph leaves? And I've realized
and you've made the point as well, of like, this

is now the NBA, but this we're getting a look
at it right now, and so you can like it
or you cannot like it. But this is what the
future of the NBA is right now. This is your
post Lebron, post Steph Curry NBA. And for as much
as I love seeing Curry what he's done and love
(05:05):
him or hate him, you have to appreciate what Lebron
has done over the two decades, whether you're not a
fan or not, it's been darn right amazing with his accomplishments.
But this is what you get in the NBA, and Manzi,
I'm not sure everybody is going to like it.

Well they better get used to it, because this is
what we're going to be getting. And don't be surprised
if we start seeing more teams make it further without
a quote unquote superstar, that's what we're seeing. Superstars don't
necessarily matter if you don't have the players to back
them up. Where are the Suns with their two and
a half superstars?

And so this is the beginning of the future of
the NBA.

And it's because the recipe for success is.

Literally in front of our eyes right now. You need
to have depth, superstar not necessary. Do you have a
lot of really good players and a bunch of great
players that is going to get you far.

Have you enjoyed these playoffs?

I have enjoyed a lot of the Knicks games. I've
enjoyed a lot of Not every game or every series
has been as exciting. I did not enjoy Okay, seeing
the Grizzlies in the first round. That was not fun
for me. But there have been series and games that
have been exciting.

As a whole, I've enjoyed it.

Yeah, as a whole, I have enjoyed it.

My team lost in five games in the first round. Yeah,
so yours lost in seven. So we have reasons. They
have sour grapes or reasons to check out. I like
it because of the unpredictability, and that's why I like it.
I don't know who's going to win again. People were
telling me on social media after Oklahoma City went up

to oh that not only they were going to win
this series against the Timberwolves, but they would win the
next series as well. I don't believe that's going to happen.
They may, I mean, they may win it, yeah, but
I don't think that we can automatically count them as champions.
And That's what I've liked about this. I didn't know
who was gonna win Game seven between the Clippers and Nuggets.
Now it ended up being the same old story of

how it would play out. When people were making first
round predictions. When it came to my team, people picked
the Bucks because they're like, well, the Celtics aren't gonna lose,
the Knicks are going to end up when their series,
the Cavaliers are going to cruise to theirs. I got
to pick an upset, so I'll just pick Milwaukee in
Indiana's like, haha, jokes on you. We are under the
bucks skin, we have their number, and now here they
(07:30):
are again in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second
straight year. There's been unpredictable moments the Lakers, I mean,
people fell under the spell of the Lakers and seeing
Minnesota run over them. How many people thought I think
a lot of people thought Golden State was going to
meet the Rockets but needed seven games to do so.
But there was drama built in with that, right, So
(07:51):
all of that has been good, But then when we
hear game one of the East of the Western Conference
Finals were down twenty four percent. There like ratings were
up for the first two weeks. But then they take
a hit with this matchup. And I'm to the point,
manci where I'm with you. I want some drama. I
want to not know who's automatically destined to win. But
(08:11):
I do think that the league does need superstars to
replace those old superstars, and that's what I'm waiting for.
That's what worries me about. Like shake oldish Alexanders now
because of the thought process that he is a flopper
and gets all the calls could hurt him in terms
of popularity. I think Anthony edwards talent is through the roof.
I think he could be the face of the NBA.
(08:33):
If he wants it, he has got it. I've said
that about twenty times over the past couple of days.
I feel that Anthony Edwards has it. Other players have
said the same thing. But to Rick Buker's point when
he joined us earlier on the network, he hasn't shown
the maturity to want to be that person. If Anthony
Edwards does do that, then maybe he does help replace

Lebron and Steph. If Luka Dancich gets in shape and
starts to play defense, maybe that's the next part of
the NBA. Maybe it goes to that part. But since
those guys aren't doing it, the question marks that we
have for the NBA actually think are good for the league.

Yeah, it's just annoying that everybody's an analyst right nowadays.
Every single person thinks that they can analyze a game
and digest exactly what has happened, when in reality, I
don't get the hate.

For Shay Gill.

Just Alexander he has been You could call him a
foul merchant, sure, but he has been doing this the
entire regular season. And just because we haven't watched as
many Thunder games naturally televised, he's been doing this and
this the reps have allowed it. At the same time,
to say that he isn't talented, that.

Would be a lie.

And I don't know how a small market team that
are all these guys just want to hoop, and how
they get so much hate and here they are, you know,
delivering with Yes, a guy that likes to you know,
definitely try and go for the foul, but it's not
like everyone can just do that.

You still have to some sort of skill and be
able to do that, and he's able to He's able
to do that, so he doesn't get under my skin.
I feel like, you know, he takes advantage of the rules,
the same way Patrick Mahomes takes advantage of the rules
when he's running down the sideline and he doesn't actually
get out of bounds.

Sure, it's the same exact.

Thing, but I get when you're great, I guess people
come out of the woodworks to.

Hate on you. And he hasn't even won.

They never even won, and look at how this team
already gets hated on.

I have enjoyed the unknown because I legit was like, well,
the Celtics are coming out of the East, no question.

No, I would have put money on that at the
start of the playoffs.

It's Boston, no question. Out of the West, I wasn't sure.

Obviously, I was like, I think the Clippers gonna do it,
but I really wasn't sure.

I cannot believe what went down, But give credit to
the Pacers who here they are something that they have
been working on for what two and a half three
years now.

This didn't just happen for the Pacers.

They've been trying to do this, building on this team
for the last two and a half three years and
they're finally getting into a groove and they've eliminated the
best team out of the East with the best record.
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Do you think it's because of that? Doesn't that hurt
the league? Because in a way that I think that
I love the unpredictable nature of it, and the Pacers
upsetting the Cavaliers was crazy. One of the things that
we don't see a lot in the NBA playoffs are upsets. Yeah,
and now we're actually getting that. But does it I
(11:32):
think it does in a way hurt the NBA to
not have to have the Cavaliers be that good during
the season and then be easily ousted again to go
back to the Bucks. I don't think it was good
for the NBA for the Bucks to be the number
one seed a couple of times, where they were before
they won the championship and be ousted early and then
over these next couple of seasons since the championship ousted
(11:55):
in the first round. I don't think that's great for
the league when you're trying to sell and that's the
things I don't know if they're trying to sell the
Superstars or they're trying to sell the team. But nobody
was buying the Cavaliers because the league was not selling them,
and so then when all of a sudden you see
them be ousted, it doesn't do good for anybody except
(12:17):
us who are wondering who's gonna win the series. But
the reason it doesn't do well for anybody is because
people then don't believe that the regular season matters. They
don't believe in the Cavaliers then as a franchise, and
then they look at the Pacers, and because they look
down on the Cavaliers, they don't think what the Pacers
accomplished is a great accomplishment. So you're really not gaining
(12:37):
anything from it in this new way of MBA. I've
loved the playoffs, I love the spontaneity, I've loved the unknown,
But for a league that has dominated so much on
non parody, on being one sided, on having dominant teams
and dominant players. I don't know how this is going
to work out for the NBA if this does continue,

as this is the future of the league and.

It is the future of the league, and I don't
know if it's going to continue to go down.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
But the real you hit it right on the head.

The regular season was already losing interest because fans feel
that the players don't take it seriously. And unfortunately, the
way the playoffs have gone, it proves that point.

Cavaliers are out.

I mean, OKAC has the best record, but again they
went to seven games with the Nuggets, and so it's
just this, All of this stems from the regular season
and that.

Has to change. First.

Now, if you have competitive games in the playoffs, that
draws you in. Everybody has been watching the Knicks all playoffs.
Those names, those numbers haven't gone down, in fact, they're
up because those games have all been competitive. Nobody wants
to watch a blowout.

And the fact that.

Anthony Edwards and Shay Gil just Alexander in this matchup
have been like hit or miss. Imagine if they were
both going off every single game.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
It'd be great and it would allow the NBA then
to have those two players anointed stars, and I think
that's what they hoped with Luca. But if the Pacers
were playing the Magic, do you think it's the same
instead of the next Do you think it's the same.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
No, it's not the same. It's not the same.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Unless it's a Palo Bancaro show against Tyrese Haliburton. Then
all of a sudden people are starting to tune in.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Yes, but you need a storyline.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
But it's also Paulo ban Carrol does not rise to
the level of the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
No, not at all, but you would a storyline would
help the Knicks. Storyline naturally comes because they're the Knicks
and they haven't been in this position in how long,
and they have all of these celebrities and all these
stars at these games.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
There is a huge.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Story when it comes to the Knicks, So they didn't
need to do much to get more eyes on them.
Other teams would have had to do more work. You
are so right, but in reality, this is it, guys,
like we're gonna see these teams be successful because of
their depth. And also, let's say the Pacers or thunder
do win this. Let's say this is the finals and
one of them comes out winner. Do not expect them
(14:58):
to just be able to easily run it back next
year because now egos are gonna get bigger after you win,
how and another team was gonna try to poach your players,
all of your good players, even off the bench.

That dude feels like i'd be like, he never misses
when he comes on the court. You don't think if
they win, somebody's gonna be like, hey, we'll give you
more money and you can play more minutes over here.

And then ego gets in the way.

So this idea of parody being part of the NBA, guys,
it's not going anywhere.

One of these two teams, I doubt that they're gonna
be able to convince everybody on their roster to just
run it back and that ego is not.

I love it. I think there's an enormous consequence to this, though,
But I want to hear from Jason Stewart on this topic.

Pretty good barometer actually for the common sports fan, is
that I don't watch a whole lot of NBA during
the season. I think the numbers are showing that, and
I like watch a lot of it in the postseason,
and I am truly enjoying this experience. Yeah, because you didn't,
I don't necessarily watch on a month to month basis.
The evolution of the game, how the game has changed.
(16:06):
It's so much more exciting and almost frantic, and so
so it's it's gotten my interest, which I think that
says a lot because I'm not a huge fan of
the league. I love the athleticism, I love the three
pointers and all that stuff. But I do want to
go back to something that Dan brought up in the
first part of the segment, because I've been researching it
all segment long because it's got my interest. So Kenny
(16:29):
Smith came out and said something really funny to Ernie Johnson.
Could I play this for the listeners. This was well
after the game last night or it was time, Yeah, halftime. Okay,
here it is.

There's only one guy on the Indiana side and double
figures and he comes off the bench.

Well, you know, first of all, before we go to
the pictures, they're very fortunate the Knicks. They're going that
five zero run and I'm you know, the other thing,
you surprised that, you know, Tippota wouldn't play nine guys
in a baseball game. So like they right, they have
a surprised Bars Bars that he has done that, but

the bench of Indiana.

So it is a good line.

And I was wondering what is it from, because I
think you mentioned Dan that it maybe it was a
TV or a movie reference. I've been searching for that.
Maybe you know this, maybe a listener knows it.

I don't. I thought the line of take two weeks
off and then quit was from a movie or TV show,
but that Kenny's I thought was original. Oh it is okay, So.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
Whatever reason, I thought it was some kind of like
a movie reference or something. And I looked and I
couldn't find it. So that was the update. I couldn't
find what I was looking for. It's a great line
and it looks like it's Kenny Smith original.

That a great line and his conversation to the point
of like the Pacers' best player, points wise, was TJ
McConnell at the time at the half and and TJ
McConnell is a veteran, He finds his spots, knows what
he needs to do. There's extreme value in that. But
it wasn't like TJ McConnell was going to go off
for eighteen points in the f No.

But he is a consistent courre part of the offense,
and that's the whole thing.
Speaker 4 (18:05):
It's like I was gonna say, Nuggets, the.
Speaker 3 (18:08):
Knicks now extending their their roster using more players, It's like,
you should have done this the entire season. Now you're
hoping and praying them Michael Landry Shammitt can go out
there and hit some shots for.
Speaker 4 (18:22):
You when he hasn't played in how long.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Like this is the difference is that the Pacers and
the thunder have been using their depth the entire season.
They're not now hoping that these players come off the
bench and have a great moment, But other teams are
hoping for that moment because they haven't done this.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
I may be mistaken, but I thought that Landry Shammitt
didn't dress at one point in the series, that he
wasn't in a uniform.
Speaker 4 (18:45):
I didn't even notice.
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yes, But and so the Knicks have to expand because
Jalen Bronson and Karl Anthony Towns can't do it themselves.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
They can't and they get gassed in the fourth quarter.

Correct, And that's because you're playing forty four minutes because
to Kenny Smith's point, Thibodeau won't play not guys, even
if it was a baseball game. But what you get
in these scenarios is if Brunton and Cat can't carry
the Knicks to a title, if Anthony Edwards isn't doing
it with the Timberwolves, and then they're gonna have money
(19:16):
tied up and maybe not be able to surround him
with that cast. If it's the Pacers that are winning.
For his greatest Tyre's Halliburton has been it was Siakam
in Game two that save them. You're not having your
stars in the NBA rise to the level of an
NBA champion. And the ultimate consequence in this, and I
(19:38):
think what we're talking about is correct that this is
the future of the NBA, especially when you're paying guys
sixty million dollars a year and there's gonna be contracts
that go along with that, and it's going to be
difficult to fill out teams. But the NBA is weeks
away from what I believe Manzi crowning the worst NBA
champion that we've seen in my lifetime. Look at these
(20:03):
four teams, pick the best one that you like. And
if it's Oklahoma City, that's fine. Would that Oklahoma City
team be any of the Laker teams from the early
two thousands or the Kobe teams in eight and nine?
No way are they being in the Heat? No? Are
they being the Warriors? No are they being in the Cavaliers.
No are they beating the Spurs. No are they beating
(20:23):
the eight Celtics. No are they beating the ninety Bulls? Heck,
no are they beating the early nineties Pistons. No are
they beating the Lakers and Celtics. No. It is a
different league and is the league that has to be adjusted.
But these teams on a league again that has been
built on superstars and not parody, is fast tracking to
(20:48):
having the worst NBA champion that we've seen. And when
you look at the past champions since the COVID year,
even with the Raptors, I think the Raptors were better
than we thought when they were playing at the time
now that we've seen how it all played out, but
the dominant teams and what the NBA is built upon
is no longer. I like it this way I like
the guessing game. I like the questions on who's gonna
(21:11):
win and who's not gonna win. But that is not
what the NBA is accustomed to, and I think that's
what we're on the verge of. And I don't know
if it works.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
I like it too, I don't know if it works
in the big grand scheme of things. But all the
teams you listed, I was like, well, yeah, no, they
were a lot more physical, and they were a lot
bigger on defense. The Thunder are one of those few
teams that do actually play defense the entire forty eight minutes.
I don't know what other team actually does that. Maybe
(21:41):
the Pacers, well, but that has to do.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
With their debt because they're not tired.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Well, not this Pacers team, because you can score on them,
you can't. Well, yes, but they have They at least
play a lot of guys because they want to run
and they want to score.

Right, so they can try and keep a pace. Sure, right,
that they want. But you're right, all of those other
teams were just way more physical, and I just think.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
That they're better as well. And it's just it's the
new NBA.

Because they have an actual score like somebody that you're
gonna give the ball to and be like, go score
for us, please.

Yeah.

And I think that the way that the salary structure
is the second apron or salaries are hurting teams and
it's developed more of a product that we thought that
we wanted. But again, that's never what the NBA was
built on, and I just don't know if we're not
used to it. I get why the Timberwolves in Thunder
maybe wouldn't be that draw because if it was the

Pacers and Magic, Sorry Orlando, I'm not meaning to pick
on them, but it just in terms of if you
were to just take a team that made the playoffs
that maybe didn't have a huge following, would Pacers Magic
still be as exciting. No, it's it's Timothy Shallome, it's
Tracy Morgan, it's all of those faces that are showing
up that also make it interesting. And just the Knicks
and the New York feeling. But if this is more
(22:57):
of what the NBA comes, guess what. The Knicks aren't
gonna make it every single year to the Eastern Conference Finals.
You're gonna have more of what we got here, and
you're gonna have more Number One seeds being ousted. If
this continues in the NBA, and while I love it,
I don't know if it's great for the NBA, who's
done business a different sort of way for the last
forty years.

Well, they're gonna have to change it up and there
may be some growing pains with it, but eventually.

I do think it can work.

It's just you have to look at the NBA a
little differently because this isn't going anywhere.

four tomorrow night in Indianapolis last night on the TNT broadcast,
asked there was a theme and it's happened throughout this
series between the Pacers and Knicks, which is being broadcast
by TNT. I hate modern day basketball. That's usually the

TNT theme. No, No, Reggie Miller was a topic of conversation.

And for Cavino and Rich Today, Reggie Miller always seems
to be a topic of conversation, and it's usually never positive.

I feel like I'm in the minority in saying I
don't mind when Reggie Miller calls TNT games either. All right,
so you and meet together. I hear a lot of
people bashing Reggie Miller. Now, if you're a Knicks fan
and you're bashing Reggie Miller over these three games, I
get it. But I'll tell you what I think Reggie
Miller being a biased Pacers fan but not actually saying

it is the best version of Reggie Miller that we've gotten.
Take this for example, end of the third quarter, Nicks
making a push. Hacer is trying to stave off New York.
Late third Ben Matherin makes kind of a boneheaded fowl.
This is Reggie Miller. Matherine has been so bad in

this series for the Pacers. Who says that. Who think
of an analyst, play by play guy, sideline reporter that
has come out and said they have been so bad. Now,
Charles Barkley and Shack that's different may say it in
their own way. For Reggie Miller to do it during

a game amazing. And guess what, I loved it because Matherine,
to your point, Monty, you said the same thing. He
hasn't been good.

Yeah, I said, in a munch not nicer way, but
he said it's true, he has not been good.

It was funny when he said it. I laughed. I laughed.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
But at the same time, it's like anyone who has
played any analyst who has played for a team and
had history with the team. Don't tell me that they
are unbiased or impartial.

No, they're not. That is impossible.
Speaker 3 (28:10):
So this is true, and this is real, and I'm
not bothered by it.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
It's funny.

I thought, it's more entertaining, and I know it gets
under the skin of the Knicks broad of the Knicks fans,
and knowing that a broadcaster is a former pacer. That
was also your rival. But this is something that goes
back so far. There are so many teams in the
NFL that were rivals of the Cowboys in the nineties
that feel that Troy Aikman hates their team and that

Joe Buck hates their team. This is nothing new. This
usually happens with a lot of the top broadcasting, but
Buck and Aikman gets so much heat for it. Maybe
Troy Aikman should lean into being a cowboy. Yes, because
if this is what it does for Reggie Miller, I
thought it was amazing last night. I actually thought it
was authentic and real. And it's bad for Ben Matherin.

But if Reggie Miller is saying that you're playing bad,
then you probably are playing bad. And it actually gave
us a line of analysis that I don't know if
people feel that Reggie Miller is given in any yeah
of the past eight seasons or whatsoever. I absolutely loved
it me too.

Like you said, it was authentic, It came from somewhere,
and whether it's because he hates the NIXT, then that's
what it is. But I don't tune into games to
hear certain people talk unless it's NBA on TNT so
with any of those guys like I just I listen,
but I'm not trying to listen. I'm here to watch
the game, you know. So that's just like sometimes I
tune them out. But last night I was offering at

Reggie Miller's comments.

ear when it comes to things like this. Oh I do,
but one thing, this is going to trigger half our audience.
Don't be triggered. Megan Kelly, she does a very popular podcast.
She says something interesting and I agree with her here
She's like, you know what, my right leaning politics bleed
into my coverage of news, but my listeners know that

and they filter it through that, you know, as opposed
to most media organizations who pretend to be unbiased but
they're really not. Which one would you prefer? I kind
of like that perspective. I think I don't think you
can fault Reggie Miller. And if you know it's there,
why not lean into it. He's not a journalist. That's

that's my whole thing.

Chris Purfett, Yeah, just if I'm going to have to
be subjected to stephen A. Smith singing Orange and Blue
Skies every halftime show for ESPN. When when they have
a Knicks game and Spike Lee worming his way onto
every sports show in existence, then Reggie Miller can have
a little fun for the Pacers. Well.

And it's it's different because within that game window, and
I do feel like Charles Barkley and maybe steven A
get a little bit leeway, but you're not seeing a
lot of steven A in that game window during a broadcast.
That's the foreign part of it. But I heard it
last night and I thought, you know what, I don't
have a dog in the fight, but it's kind of

funny then to hear it, and it wasn't just complete praise.
In fact, Reggie Miller knows these Pacers so good that
he can call it out. When Ben Mathern has been
awful for the Pacers, He's able to call it out.
So it's not just a one way love fest for it.
There's actually realness into what Reggie Miller is saying and
not trying to tow a line and being neutral.

I just firmly believe it was if it was the
other way, if we had like Charles Oakley on a
broadcast or something, and he's talking about deep on the
Knicks bench. Nobody would matter about it because it's the
next of course, they're God's favorite team and everything.

I I just it's the Pacers. So yeah, it is
the Pacers, but it's also just to the point of
we usually see And Doug texted up. Doug Gottlieb texted
us in our group chat. I think it was last No,
maybe it was a tweet by Doug. Doug sent a

is like so so nails in all this, yeah, and

so he's loving stan Vangundy is a part of the
TNT broadcast. And I know people get annoyed by Reggie Miller,
but I say, lean into it, man.

night in a suite. I either feel you throw the
book at him. Just difficult to do when his son's
on the team, or you just have him be in
the suite the whole time so he can't engage with players,

be rigged and the NBA may not be rigged, people
saw Scott Foster's doing Game three. All looks like it's
going to be a Nicks wins the series fixer. But
I also think that the NBA did not want two
series to go three to zero and have an NBA

Finals start June fifth. They do have a contingency plan,
but I don't know if they have a contingency plan
this year because they were running promos for the final
start June fifth. But in previous years and when I
covered the NBA Finals, there was a contingency plan if
the series were to end early, that the Finals would
be moved up a few days to accommodate everything. But

June fifth is when the Finals start, and now I
think that is going to stick. Considering where we are
with the series right now, Minnesota trailing two one to
Oklahoma City and the Knicks back in the series, but
still down two to one to the Indiana Pacers. You
know what this playoffs don't have or these series don't have.
They don't have Lebron, James Bye, they don't have Steph Curry,

by oh me, don't have Kevin Durant, Bye, don't have
Giannis and Tetakumpo, A lot of big names that are
No Nikolaiokich, He's goodbye. Last year we had a scenario
where we were wondering if Jason Tatum was a superstar
and if jaln Bron was to that level. We did

have Luca against Anthony Edwards and the Timberwolvesics ended up
beating the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals last season,
but it was again a conference finals without Lebron, without
Steph Curry, without Kevin Durant, without Nikolay Okicic, without Jannison, Tetakumpo,
without Joel Embiid, all these without Sorry Kawhi.

Leonard there, Yes, he's never around.

In the playoffs. No James Harden. And the reason I
bring this up is I've always wondered what the NBA
is going to look like when Lebron leaves, what's it
going to be like when Steph leaves? And I've realized
and you've made the point as well, of like, this

is now the NBA, but this we're getting a look
at it right now, and so you can like it
or you cannot like it. But this is what the
future of the NBA is right now. This is your
post Lebron, post Steph Curry NBA. And for as much
as I love seeing Curry what he's done and love

him or hate him, you have to appreciate what Lebron
has done over the two decades, whether you're not a
fan or not, it's been darn right amazing with his accomplishments.
But this is what you get in the NBA, and Manzi,
I'm not sure everybody is going to like it.

Well they better get used to it, because this is
what we're going to be getting. And don't be surprised
if we start seeing more teams make it further without
a quote unquote superstar, that's what we're seeing. Superstars don't
necessarily matter if you don't have the players to back
them up. Where are the Suns with their two and
a half superstars?

Nowhere near us?

And so this is the beginning of the future of
the NBA.

And it's because the recipe for success is.

Literally in front of our eyes right now. You need
to have depth, superstar not necessary. Do you have a
lot of really good players and a bunch of great
players that is going to get you far.

Have you enjoyed these playoffs?
Speaker 3 (06:09):
I have enjoyed a lot of the Knicks games. I've
enjoyed a lot of Not every game or every series
has been as exciting. I did not enjoy Okay, seeing
the Grizzlies in the first round. That was not fun
for me. But there have been series and games that
have been exciting.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
As a whole, I've enjoyed it.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Yeah, as a whole, I have enjoyed it.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
My team lost in five games in the first round. Yeah,
so yours lost in seven. So we have reasons. They
have sour grapes or reasons to check out. I like
it because of the unpredictability, and that's why I like it.
I don't know who's going to win again. People were
telling me on social media after Oklahoma City went up
(06:48):
to oh that not only they were going to win
this series against the Timberwolves, but they would win the
next series as well. I don't believe that's going to happen.
They may, I mean, they may win it, yeah, but
I don't think that we can automatically count them as champions.
And That's what I've liked about this. I didn't know
who was gonna win Game seven between the Clippers and Nuggets.
Now it ended up being the same old story of
(07:09):
how it would play out. When people were making first
round predictions. When it came to my team, people picked
the Bucks because they're like, well, the Celtics aren't gonna lose,
the Knicks are going to end up when their series,
the Cavaliers are going to cruise to theirs. I got
to pick an upset, so I'll just pick Milwaukee in
Indiana's like, haha, jokes on you. We are under the
bucks skin, we have their number, and now here they
(07:30):
are again in the Eastern Conference Finals for the second
straight year. There's been unpredictable moments the Lakers, I mean,
people fell under the spell of the Lakers and seeing
Minnesota run over them. How many people thought I think
a lot of people thought Golden State was going to
meet the Rockets but needed seven games to do so.
But there was drama built in with that, right, So
(07:51):
all of that has been good, But then when we
hear game one of the East of the Western Conference
Finals were down twenty four percent. There like ratings were
up for the first two weeks. But then they take
a hit with this matchup. And I'm to the point,
manci where I'm with you. I want some drama. I
want to not know who's automatically destined to win. But
(08:11):
I do think that the league does need superstars to
replace those old superstars, and that's what I'm waiting for.
That's what worries me about. Like shake oldish Alexanders now
because of the thought process that he is a flopper
and gets all the calls could hurt him in terms
of popularity. I think Anthony edwards talent is through the roof.
I think he could be the face of the NBA.
(08:33):
If he wants it, he has got it. I've said
that about twenty times over the past couple of days.
I feel that Anthony Edwards has it. Other players have
said the same thing. But to Rick Buker's point when
he joined us earlier on the network, he hasn't shown
the maturity to want to be that person. If Anthony
Edwards does do that, then maybe he does help replace
(08:54):
Lebron and Steph. If Luka Dancich gets in shape and
starts to play defense, maybe that's the next part of
the NBA. Maybe it goes to that part. But since
those guys aren't doing it, the question marks that we
have for the NBA actually think are good for the league.

Yeah, it's just annoying that everybody's an analyst right nowadays.
Every single person thinks that they can analyze a game
and digest exactly what has happened, when in reality, I
don't get the hate.

For Shay Gill.

Just Alexander he has been You could call him a
foul merchant, sure, but he has been doing this the
entire regular season. And just because we haven't watched as
many Thunder games naturally televised, he's been doing this and
this the reps have allowed it. At the same time,
to say that he isn't talented, that.

Would be a lie.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
And I don't know how a small market team that
are all these guys just want to hoop, and how
they get so much hate and here they are, you know,
delivering with Yes, a guy that likes to you know,
definitely try and go for the foul, but it's not
like everyone can just do that.

Not anyone can just foul bait.

You still have to some sort of skill and be
able to do that, and he's able to He's able
to do that, so he doesn't get under my skin.
I feel like, you know, he takes advantage of the rules,
the same way Patrick Mahomes takes advantage of the rules
when he's running down the sideline and he doesn't actually
get out of bounds.

Thing, but I get when you're great, I guess people
come out of the woodworks to.

the Pacers who here they are something that they have
been working on for what two and a half three
years now.

This didn't just happen for the Pacers.

They've been trying to do this, building on this team
for the last two and a half three years and
they're finally getting into a groove and they've eliminated the
best team out of the East with the best record.

Do you think it's because of that? Doesn't that hurt
the league? Because in a way that I think that
I love the unpredictable nature of it, and the Pacers
upsetting the Cavaliers was crazy. One of the things that
we don't see a lot in the NBA playoffs are upsets. Yeah,
and now we're actually getting that. But does it I
(11:32):
think it does in a way hurt the NBA to
not have to have the Cavaliers be that good during
the season and then be easily ousted again to go
back to the Bucks. I don't think it was good
for the NBA for the Bucks to be the number
one seed a couple of times, where they were before
they won the championship and be ousted early and then
over these next couple of seasons since the championship ousted
(11:55):
in the first round. I don't think that's great for
the league when you're trying to sell and that's the
things I don't know if they're trying to sell the
Superstars or they're trying to sell the team. But nobody
was buying the Cavaliers because the league was not selling them,
and so then when all of a sudden you see
them be ousted, it doesn't do good for anybody except
(12:17):
us who are wondering who's gonna win the series. But
the reason it doesn't do well for anybody is because
people then don't believe that the regular season matters. They
don't believe in the Cavaliers then as a franchise, and
then they look at the Pacers, and because they look
down on the Cavaliers, they don't think what the Pacers
accomplished is a great accomplishment. So you're really not gaining
(12:37):
anything from it in this new way of MBA. I've
loved the playoffs, I love the spontaneity, I've loved the unknown,
But for a league that has dominated so much on
non parody, on being one sided, on having dominant teams
and dominant players. I don't know how this is going
to work out for the NBA if this does continue,

as this is the future of the league and.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
It is the future of the league, and I don't
know if it's going to continue to go down.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
But the real you hit it right on the head.

The regular season was already losing interest because fans feel
that the players don't take it seriously. And unfortunately, the
way the playoffs have gone, it proves that point.

Cavaliers are out.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
I mean, OKAC has the best record, but again they
went to seven games with the Nuggets, and so it's
just this, All of this stems from the regular season
and that.
Speaker 4 (13:30):
Has to change. First.

Now, if you have competitive games in the playoffs, that
draws you in. Everybody has been watching the Knicks all playoffs.
Those names, those numbers haven't gone down, in fact, they're
up because those games have all been competitive. Nobody wants
to watch a blowout.

And the fact that.
Speaker 3 (13:49):
Anthony Edwards and Shay Gil just Alexander in this matchup
have been like hit or miss. Imagine if they were
both going off every single game.
Speaker 1 (13:57):
It'd be great and it would allow the NBA then
to have those two players anointed stars, and I think
that's what they hoped with Luca. But if the Pacers
were playing the Magic, do you think it's the same
instead of the next Do you think it's the same.
Speaker 4 (14:09):
No, it's not the same. It's not the same.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
Unless it's a Palo Bancaro show against Tyrese Haliburton. Then
all of a sudden people are starting to tune in.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
Yes, but you need a storyline.

But it's also Paulo ban Carrol does not rise to
the level of the Knicks.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
No, not at all, but you would a storyline would
help the Knicks. Storyline naturally comes because they're the Knicks
and they haven't been in this position in how long,
and they have all of these celebrities and all these
stars at these games.
Speaker 4 (14:34):
There is a huge.

Story when it comes to the Knicks, So they didn't
need to do much to get more eyes on them.
Other teams would have had to do more work. You
are so right, but in reality, this is it, guys,
like we're gonna see these teams be successful because of
their depth. And also, let's say the Pacers or thunder
do win this. Let's say this is the finals and
one of them comes out winner. Do not expect them

to just be able to easily run it back next
year because now egos are gonna get bigger after you win,
how and another team was gonna try to poach your players,
all of your good players, even off the bench.

That dude feels like i'd be like, he never misses
when he comes on the court. You don't think if
they win, somebody's gonna be like, hey, we'll give you
more money and you can play more minutes over here.

So this idea of parody being part of the NBA, guys,
it's not going anywhere.

be able to convince everybody on their roster to just
run it back and that ego is not.

Pretty good barometer actually for the common sports fan, is
that I don't watch a whole lot of NBA during
the season. I think the numbers are showing that, and
I like watch a lot of it in the postseason,
and I am truly enjoying this experience. Yeah, because you didn't,
I don't necessarily watch on a month to month basis.
The evolution of the game, how the game has changed.

It's so much more exciting and almost frantic, and so
so it's it's gotten my interest, which I think that
says a lot because I'm not a huge fan of
the league. I love the athleticism, I love the three
pointers and all that stuff. But I do want to
go back to something that Dan brought up in the
first part of the segment, because I've been researching it
all segment long because it's got my interest. So Kenny

Smith came out and said something really funny to Ernie Johnson.
Could I play this for the listeners. This was well
after the game last night or it was time, Yeah, halftime. Okay,

There's only one guy on the Indiana side and double

Well, you know, first of all, before we go to
the pictures, they're very fortunate the Knicks. They're going that

you surprised that, you know, Tippota wouldn't play nine guys
in a baseball game. So like they right, they have
a surprised Bars Bars that he has done that, but

the bench of Indiana.

So it is a good line.

And I was wondering what is it from, because I
think you mentioned Dan that it maybe it was a

find what I was looking for. It's a great line

of like the Pacers' best player, points wise, was TJ
McConnell at the time at the half and and TJ
McConnell is a veteran, He finds his spots, knows what
he needs to do. There's extreme value in that. But
it wasn't like TJ McConnell was going to go off

But he is a consistent courre part of the offense,
and that's the whole thing.

Knicks now extending their their roster using more players, It's like,
you should have done this the entire season. Now you're
hoping and praying them Michael Landry Shammitt can go out
there and hit some shots for.

You when he hasn't played in how long.

Like this is the difference is that the Pacers and
the thunder have been using their depth the entire season.
They're not now hoping that these players come off the
bench and have a great moment, But other teams are
hoping for that moment because they haven't done this.

I may be mistaken, but I thought that Landry Shammitt
didn't dress at one point in the series, that he
wasn't in a uniform.

I didn't even notice.

Yes, But and so the Knicks have to expand because
Jalen Bronson and Karl Anthony Towns can't do it themselves.

They can't and they get gassed in the fourth quarter.

Correct, And that's because you're playing forty four minutes because
to Kenny Smith's point, Thibodeau won't play not guys, even
if it was a baseball game. But what you get
in these scenarios is if Brunton and Cat can't carry
the Knicks to a title, if Anthony Edwards isn't doing
it with the Timberwolves, and then they're gonna have money

tied up and maybe not be able to surround him
with that cast. If it's the Pacers that are winning.
For his greatest Tyre's Halliburton has been it was Siakam
in Game two that save them. You're not having your
stars in the NBA rise to the level of an
NBA champion. And the ultimate consequence in this, and I
(19:38):
think what we're talking about is correct that this is
the future of the NBA, especially when you're paying guys
sixty million dollars a year and there's gonna be contracts
that go along with that, and it's going to be
difficult to fill out teams. But the NBA is weeks
away from what I believe Manzi crowning the worst NBA
champion that we've seen in my lifetime. Look at these
(20:03):
four teams, pick the best one that you like. And
if it's Oklahoma City, that's fine. Would that Oklahoma City
team be any of the Laker teams from the early
two thousands or the Kobe teams in eight and nine?
No way are they being in the Heat? No? Are
they being the Warriors? No are they being in the Cavaliers.
No are they beating the Spurs. No are they beating
(20:23):
the eight Celtics. No are they beating the ninety Bulls? Heck,
no are they beating the early nineties Pistons. No are
they beating the Lakers and Celtics. No. It is a
different league and is the league that has to be adjusted.
But these teams on a league again that has been
built on superstars and not parody, is fast tracking to
(20:48):
having the worst NBA champion that we've seen. And when
you look at the past champions since the COVID year,
even with the Raptors, I think the Raptors were better
than we thought when they were playing at the time
now that we've seen how it all played out, but
the dominant teams and what the NBA is built upon
is no longer. I like it this way I like
the guessing game. I like the questions on who's gonna
(21:11):
win and who's not gonna win. But that is not
what the NBA is accustomed to, and I think that's
what we're on the verge of. And I don't know
if it works.
Speaker 3 (21:18):
I like it too, I don't know if it works
in the big grand scheme of things. But all the
teams you listed, I was like, well, yeah, no, they
were a lot more physical, and they were a lot
bigger on defense. The Thunder are one of those few
teams that do actually play defense the entire forty eight minutes.
I don't know what other team actually does that. Maybe
(21:41):
the Pacers, well, but that has to do.
Speaker 4 (21:44):
With their debt because they're not tired.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Well, not this Pacers team, because you can score on them,
you can't. Well, yes, but they have They at least
play a lot of guys because they want to run
and they want to score.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Right, so they can try and keep a pace. Sure, right,
that they want. But you're right, all of those other
teams were just way more physical, and I just think.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
That they're better as well. And it's just it's the
new NBA.
Speaker 3 (22:06):
Because they have an actual score like somebody that you're
gonna give the ball to and be like, go score
for us, please.
Speaker 7 (22:12):
Yeah.

And I think that the way that the salary structure
is the second apron or salaries are hurting teams and
it's developed more of a product that we thought that
we wanted. But again, that's never what the NBA was
built on, and I just don't know if we're not
used to it. I get why the Timberwolves in Thunder
maybe wouldn't be that draw because if it was the

Pacers and Magic, Sorry Orlando, I'm not meaning to pick
on them, but it just in terms of if you
were to just take a team that made the playoffs
that maybe didn't have a huge following, would Pacers Magic
still be as exciting. No, it's it's Timothy Shallome, it's
Tracy Morgan, it's all of those faces that are showing
up that also make it interesting. And just the Knicks
and the New York feeling. But if this is more
(22:57):
of what the NBA comes, guess what. The Knicks aren't
gonna make it every single year to the Eastern Conference Finals.
You're gonna have more of what we got here, and
you're gonna have more Number One seeds being ousted. If
this continues in the NBA, and while I love it,
I don't know if it's great for the NBA, who's
done business a different sort of way for the last
forty years.

Well, they're gonna have to change it up and there
may be some growing pains with it, but eventually.

I do think it can work.

It's just you have to look at the NBA a
little differently because this isn't going anywhere.

And for Cavino and Rich Today, Reggie Miller always seems
to be a topic of conversation, and it's usually never positive.

I feel like I'm in the minority in saying I
don't mind when Reggie Miller calls TNT games either. All right,
so you and meet together. I hear a lot of
people bashing Reggie Miller. Now, if you're a Knicks fan
and you're bashing Reggie Miller over these three games, I
get it. But I'll tell you what I think Reggie
Miller being a biased Pacers fan but not actually saying

it is the best version of Reggie Miller that we've gotten.
Take this for example, end of the third quarter, Nicks
making a push. Hacer is trying to stave off New York.
Late third Ben Matherin makes kind of a boneheaded fowl.
This is Reggie Miller. Matherine has been so bad in

this series for the Pacers. Who says that. Who think
of an analyst, play by play guy, sideline reporter that
has come out and said they have been so bad. Now,
Charles Barkley and Shack that's different may say it in
their own way. For Reggie Miller to do it during

a game amazing. And guess what, I loved it because Matherine,
to your point, Monty, you said the same thing. He
hasn't been good.
Speaker 3 (27:46):
Yeah, I said, in a munch not nicer way, but
he said it's true, he has not been good.
Speaker 4 (27:53):
It was funny when he said it. I laughed. I laughed.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
But at the same time, it's like anyone who has
played any analyst who has played for a team and
had history with the team. Don't tell me that they
are unbiased or impartial.

No, they're not. That is impossible.

So this is true, and this is real, and I'm
not bothered by it.

It's funny.

I thought, it's more entertaining, and I know it gets
under the skin of the Knicks broad of the Knicks fans,
and knowing that a broadcaster is a former pacer. That
was also your rival. But this is something that goes
back so far. There are so many teams in the
NFL that were rivals of the Cowboys in the nineties
that feel that Troy Aikman hates their team and that
(28:35):
Joe Buck hates their team. This is nothing new. This
usually happens with a lot of the top broadcasting, but
Buck and Aikman gets so much heat for it. Maybe
Troy Aikman should lean into being a cowboy. Yes, because
if this is what it does for Reggie Miller, I
thought it was amazing last night. I actually thought it
was authentic and real. And it's bad for Ben Matherin.

But if Reggie Miller is saying that you're playing bad,
then you probably are playing bad. And it actually gave
us a line of analysis that I don't know if
people feel that Reggie Miller is given in any yeah
of the past eight seasons or whatsoever. I absolutely loved
it me too.

Like you said, it was authentic, It came from somewhere,
and whether it's because he hates the NIXT, then that's
what it is. But I don't tune into games to
hear certain people talk unless it's NBA on TNT so
with any of those guys like I just I listen,
but I'm not trying to listen. I'm here to watch
the game, you know. So that's just like sometimes I
tune them out. But last night I was offering at

Reggie Miller's comments.

Jason Stewart is our executive producer. You have a critical
ear when it comes to things like this. Oh I do,
but one thing, this is going to trigger half our audience.
Don't be triggered. Megan Kelly, she does a very popular podcast.
She says something interesting and I agree with her here
She's like, you know what, my right leaning politics bleed
into my coverage of news, but my listeners know that

and they filter it through that, you know, as opposed
to most media organizations who pretend to be unbiased but
they're really not. Which one would you prefer? I kind
of like that perspective. I think I don't think you
can fault Reggie Miller. And if you know it's there,
why not lean into it. He's not a journalist. That's

that's my whole thing.

Chris Purfett, Yeah, just if I'm going to have to
be subjected to stephen A. Smith singing Orange and Blue
Skies every halftime show for ESPN. When when they have
a Knicks game and Spike Lee worming his way onto
every sports show in existence, then Reggie Miller can have
a little fun for the Pacers. Well.

And it's it's different because within that game window, and
I do feel like Charles Barkley and maybe steven A
get a little bit leeway, but you're not seeing a
lot of steven A in that game window during a broadcast.
That's the foreign part of it. But I heard it
last night and I thought, you know what, I don't
have a dog in the fight, but it's kind of

funny then to hear it, and it wasn't just complete praise.
In fact, Reggie Miller knows these Pacers so good that
he can call it out. When Ben Mathern has been
awful for the Pacers, He's able to call it out.
So it's not just a one way love fest for it.
There's actually realness into what Reggie Miller is saying and
not trying to tow a line and being neutral.

I just firmly believe it was if it was the
other way, if we had like Charles Oakley on a
broadcast or something, and he's talking about deep on the
Knicks bench. Nobody would matter about it because it's the
next of course, they're God's favorite team and everything.

the Pacers, but it's also just to the point of
we usually see And Doug texted up. Doug Gottlieb texted

is like so so nails in all this, yeah, and

so he's loving stan Vangundy is a part of the
TNT broadcast. And I know people get annoyed by Reggie Miller,
but I say, lean into it, man.
