Street Day, and it's a ladies' day Hereay, Hey, they
don't believe me. Yeah, you heard her. She's Monty Belanos.
Jason Stewart's our executive producer. Hello, everybody, Iowa Sam our
(00:39):
technical producer. Hello. And Brianna muro Is at the newsday yay, guys.
And we will be starting not with Caitlin Clark, No,
not with Angel Rees. We're starting with Sophie Cunningham. Let's
get it going on Thursday. Listen. Rich always want you
(01:01):
to listen to their entire show. They do, Cavin and Rich.
We're in earlier today for the Herd. That's why Moncey
and I are here.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:09):
I'm not saying that the start of this show is
going to be bad. It's not. It's going to be great,
but We've got something cooked up at the end of
it that I think is it's I mean, if you
got to go somewhere, like if you got to go
to a ball game, your kid's playing softball tonight or baseball.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Maybe running errands, stepping into something like.
Speaker 1 (01:29):
They're trying to get away for a three day weekend
which you leave early tomorrow. I get it. It's going
to be worth going to the podcast if we can
podcast this piece of audio, because it is it is
going to be something that's coming up at the end
of the show. But we start Moncei with a conversation
about a player who hasn't played because she's injured, but
it's about a player talking about that player, and we
(01:51):
are talking about Sophie Cunningham talking about Caitlin Clark. You
heard the audio. I've heard the audio, but maybe not
everyone has heard the audio what Sophie Cunningham had to say,
we do have the clean version, trust me, we do
had to say about Caitlin Clark in the WNBA. Here
was Clark's Indiana fever teammates recently.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
It literally like pisses me off, and people are like,
she's not the face of the league.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Who would what Sabrina.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
No, No, there's really good, well known people in our league.
I'm not discreating them like we have a lot of
badasses in our league. Like hell yeah, of that, I'm
off for that. But when people will try to argue
that she's not the face of our league or if
our league would be where we're at without her, you're dumbish. Yeah,
you're literally dumbest.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
Okay, we dumping only like one letter now, like you know,
I mean, like, I mean, it's pretty down close, but
you get the kid, You really get the sense of
what she's saying about Caitlyn Clark saying this in her
debut podcast of the Show Me Something podcast that she
has launched her own podcast, And I think it's actually
a great topic because the reason that Sophie Cunningham has
(02:59):
her own podcasts Manzi is because she's stuck up for
Caitlin Clark and.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
That's all she had to do. And look at everything
that's happened for her, Dan, it's incredible. The w NBA
is so lucky that Sophie Cunningham is doing this because
Caitlin Clark isn't playing. Angel Reese has been hurt. So
who are people talking about Sophie Cunningham.
Speaker 1 (03:20):
It was you're you're exactly right. So much so Manzi
says to me that she's she's filled a void because
angel Reese was hurt. I had zero idea that angel
Reese was injured. I did not. Did you know, Jason,
you follow you followed the Indiana fever. Did you know
that angel Reese was hurt?
Speaker 4 (03:37):
No?
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Yeah, I didn't either. I had no idea back injury, right.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
Yeah, back and maybe even something else, but that's what
was listed, that she had a back injury and she
missed several games.
Speaker 4 (03:47):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
And so I was like, nobody's talking about the w NBA,
especially since the All Star Game, because everybody was, you know,
criticizing them for wearing their shirts and then not playing
hard in the All Star Game. But if it was
in for Sophie Cunningham, I know, the conversation around Sophie
is is up and down in the sense you're either
a huge fan or you hate her. But luckily the
(04:08):
w n B A people are still talking about it
and it has to do with Sophie Cunningham.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Isn't it the same the same reason with though with
Kitlyn Clark. I mean it's the same same sort of parameters.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
Fair and same thing with Angel Reese.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
Yes, you're on You're on one side or the other.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
You can't with most people, you can't like both of them.
If I say something positive about Angel Reese, oh, why
do you hate Kaitlyn Clark? I didn't even mention her.
If I say something but positive about Kitlyn Clark, why
do you hate Angel Reese? It's they unfortunately come hand
in hand.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
This is the this is the part that I that
I don't understand, and I think that it is clear
as day, and for some reason, whatever reason, Sophie Cunningham
is the only one that truly gets it. It's when
you stick up for Caitlyn Clark. Guess what it could
I'd be pretty good for you as well. So, whether
(05:04):
you want to believe, whether you want to side with
Caitlyn Clark or not, it could be genuine, it could
be fake. But Sophie Cunningham is given now not one,
but two examples of when you support your teammate who
is the face of the WNBA, good things happen to you.
(05:25):
Yet the rest of the league continues to bend over
backwards to not try to get those good things to
happen to them. To me, it's not rocket science. If
a player on another team would show support of Caitlin Clark,
I guarantee that player and their popularity would take off. Now,
(05:46):
it may not be into the stratosphere where I think
so Sophie Cunningham's has because she's a teammate, same jersey
jerseys are selling out. But you can't tell me that
there wouldn't be some positive run or you would become
or popular because of what you said, which I don't
think really hurts anything, because I don't know why everybody
would have to be against it. So for some reason, Monci,
(06:08):
other WNBA players are not picking up on the game
plan on how they could make themselves more popular because
they can't swallow their own pride, they can't get out
of their own way. They should follow Sophie Cunningham's example
and guess what they may actually benefit for it. That's
what I don't understand.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, you're never gonna understand that jealousy is a very
powerful drug. And that's what underlines here a little bit.
Sophie Cunningham's trajectory of popularity happening as quickly as it
did literally overnight. It is shocking that nobody else has
picked up on that, and you could maybe wonder if
some of these WNBA players see the negativity that Sophie
(06:51):
Cunningham is also getting, because it's not all, you know,
good attention that she's getting. She's getting a lot of
negative attention from anybody that does not like Caitlink And
so maybe that is a factor as to why a
WNBA player may not want to follow in the same footsteps.
But to not see the immediate benefit that Sophie Cunningham
(07:12):
has received from it is silly. And Sophie Cunningham's saying,
of course she's the face of the lead the league.
You're an idiot if you're not like she's not. She's
stating facts. Anyone who's still till this day says that
she is not the face of the league. You're just
kind of like, well, I can't take you seriously. Then
I can't have a legit conversation with you about the
WNBA if you look at it that way. I agree, yes,
because you're looking at it blindly.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
Nobody is and I I think you were in the
day mate when Aaron torres is and I just I
think it's very difficult for people to still have a conversation,
a legitimate conversation about any of this. Yes, but I
will say that Sophie Cunningham does not have a podcast
three months.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
Ago, not even it's probably not even some as she's
thinking about three months ago. No, someone called her it's yelp.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
In fact, Sophie Cunningham wasn't she reportedly involved with an
executive of the Phoenix Suns.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
That's we're reports to that.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Yes, yes, none of that is being talked about. No,
none of that. So even like if you say like negativity,
there may be people who are anti Caitlin Clark in
the WNBA that may take shots at Sophie Cunningham. And
then there's real world stuff where she was maybe having
an inappropriate relationship with someone in the Sun's organization that
we completely ignore. We aren't even talking about that. And
(08:24):
that's real world stuff because we're living in fantasy WNBA
world on who likes who? And so if you are
going to live in fantasy WNBA world, why not get
on board on the train that's going through Candyland. Right,
there's just lollipops and and and suckers and and it's
just it's it's.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Beautiful, but is miracle treat day.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
All Sophie Cunningham had to do was shove an opposing player,
That's all she had to do. And Jersey selling out
podcasts rolling in. I get it. She's an attractive person.
She has an Arby's deal. Now do you think if
any other player in the NBA would have wore a
WNBA that didn't stick up for Katelyn Clark, that would
have worn an arby shirt? Do you think Arby's is like,
(09:06):
we're on board with that? Heck no, but it was
Sophie Cunningham. So guess what Arby's is on board? Like,
let's let's load it up like it's it is and
for no one else in the entire league to realize
to raise their hand and just be like, I support
Kitlin Clark. How about our former teammates in Iowa? How
many are in the league, Sam, I don't know, Kate
and Martin?
Speaker 2 (09:26):
You know, maybe Megan Guests and Kate Martin and then
Lucia Olsen Ranthimistics.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Stick up, speak up for guess what You'll maybe get
a dairy queen. Ad we got dairy queen. We're all
about dairy queen today, maybe that happens, but for some reason,
no one gets the message. And that's what just I
just it boggles my mind.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
No, Dan, they have the message. They just jealousy is
a powerful drug. But it doesn't matter. It doesn't they
know the message. They see it in front of their faces,
and instead of maybe jumping on that train and doing that,
they rather sit back now obviously, like you hit it.
Sophie Cunningham is attractive, very attractive. That helps the situation.
(10:06):
So the jealousy here comes twofold, not just jealousy of
Kaitlyn Clark, but jealousy of this attractive girl that's getting
all this attention. And she also seems fun, like her
TikTok videos seem fun. Like I would have a cocktail
with Sophie Cunningham and I wouldn't say that about a
lot of other people in general.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Cocktails are involved, Moncie, Come on, cocktail, Yes, yes, I know,
like I'm just saying, like, drinks are involved. Let's lower
the let's lower the bar. You know you'll have one
if iowa Sam right, I.
Speaker 3 (10:34):
Love I always Sam, and I have cocktails all the time.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
I get what you're saying she's relatable.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
She's relatable. That's that's a perfect word. She seems fun
and she's out here defending her teammate as she should,
which is crazy to think that. Like it just it
just emphasizes how much she stood out doing that because
nobody was doing that for Kaitlyn Clark when all the
fans of the w NBA or Kaitlyn Clark of basketball
were just wondering how the league was letting this happen
(11:00):
to the new face of the sport.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
Jason Stewart's our resident Caitlin Clark backer. Sorry, Iowa Sam,
he only watches Fever games. Have you checked out Sophie
cunning Sophie Cunningham's new podcast, What's your take on this
whole deal?
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Before I get to that, I want to corroborate some information.
Moncey indeed drinks cocktails with Iowa Sam. I called Sam
once during during a happy hour. I called Sam. I
never do this, but I needed information right away for work,
and Monsey answered, So then they were. They were. They
(11:36):
were mid session.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
We're living it up at the Cheesecake Factor. Yes, yes
you were, of course.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
So by the way, I tried to like make like
a haha joke like Monzie will drink with anybody, and
then it came off like I made her sound like
a lush and so then I tried to Then I
tried to double down by saying, oh, she'll lower the
bar with Iowa Sam, and then I threw Iowa Sam
outo the and so I am sorry to both of
my teammates. Nose I can make jokes that none of
(12:05):
which landed, And then I used both of you at
my expense.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
Don't worry, I both have cocktails with everybody. So I
knew that. Come on, man, come on.
Speaker 4 (12:14):
But I think the person in the story, I think
that looks the worst. And Dan, you brought this up
a few weeks back, and I love the angle because
I like anything that's very negative. You brought up the
fact that Aliah Boston hasn't been that like outward supporter
of Caitlin Clark. Aliah Boston, her teammate, the one who
(12:35):
benefits most from Caitlin's passing, has gone the other way
when there have been quarrels. There hasn't been a lot
of verbal verbal sticking up for and I think she
kind of looks the worst in this because Sophie Cunningham
comes over as Johnny come weately, and she's gotten all
this this fame because she protects and is in Caitlin's
(12:59):
corner and Alijah Boston could have done that as early
as last year and she didn't. And also, I think,
and we can't ignore this. I know it's a light conversation,
but we can't ignore this. A straight white woman is
getting all the RBS and the podcasts for defending a
straight white woman. And I think that when you talk
about jealousy, I also think that there's this resentment among
(13:22):
WNBA players towards both of those things.
Speaker 1 (13:25):
I don't disagree with that. I don't disagree with that,
But while you're saying straight and I think that there
may be a divide in some parts. What I also
just find fascinating is that because from what Sophie Cunningham
said in the podcast, which is correct, Caitlin Clark is
the face of the WNBA. The second most popular player
(13:47):
in the WNBA right now is averaging seven point seven
points per game. Because that's Sophie Cunningham, Like, you could
tell me all you want that Asia Wilson is better,
which agreed, she is any all star that made the
All Star Team is better than Sophie Cunningham. In fact,
there may be I don't know, forty percent of the
league that's better than Sophie Cunningham right now. But Sophie
Cunningham's point about Kaitlyn Clark being the face of the
(14:08):
league is also why Sophie Cunningham right now is second
to that. And it's a spot that Angel Reese wanted
to be shoulder and shoulder with Katelyn Clark on it.
Angel Reese was never saying I'm the best player in
the NBA. She was saying I'm just as popular and
I'm a reason why this is popular. Well, right now,
Sophie Cunningham is up to that number two spot because
of what she did in supporting Caitlin Clark. So instead
(14:29):
of being across from her, because that's all that Angel
Reese was getting it, angel Reese was not talking about skill.
She's talking about the popularity of the game and how
she felt that she was the one to raise it.
Right now, look at what Sophie Cunningham has done for
her own profile just by sticking up. I think she's
the second most popular player right now in the NBA.
And there are names that we know. Again, all of
(14:49):
the All Stars are better player, but when it comes
to popularity, the second most popular player right now is
averaging less than eight points a game because she shoved
an opposing player who decided to get in the face
of kitlyn C. That's simple math to me, and I
don't know why the other WNBA players can't do that math.
I'm not saying they're umb, but it just seems like
a simple solution.
Speaker 3 (15:08):
Again, they're choosing their pride and they're.
Speaker 1 (15:11):
Not Yes, reluctance to kiss the ring. Perhaps yes, it's and.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
It's so crazy because, like you just said, it's like
you're speaking to not the you know, Sabrina Unescuz and
Breonna Stewart's You're not speaking to them. You're speaking to
players who maybe nobody knows who you are. And if
you came out and maybe took a side Caitlin's side,
look at the benefit for it. Look at the benefit
for it, because the stars are already there. There are
(15:37):
stars in the WNBA. People tune in for different players,
but it's not to them, it's not worth it. And
I think that's what's hard to grasp, that it's not
how do you not view this is worth it?
Speaker 1 (15:48):
I don't understand. I'm trying to think of an old cliche,
was it pride comes before the fall? Like that doesn't
seem to be apropolki here, but it seems that pride
is getting in the way of a lot of this.
All also say this that they're in a spot where
they are fighting for a lot, They're about to be
in a labor negotiation with the league about wanting more,
and we could talk about Caitlin Clark's importance in all
(16:09):
of that, but isn't Sophie Cunningham also setting herself up
for life after basketball one hundred and so if you
think about like those sort of avenues, you can't be
so shortsighted and narrow minded to think that I'm going
to stick up for what I sounds phony, But you
have to analyze it of this. Is this a short
(16:30):
term win or is it a long term win? And
right now, Sophie Cunningham, one episode in, we've led the
show off with their podcast. Now that probably won't happen
every Sophie Cunningham podcast, but there's going to be an
audience and then guess what, Sophie Cunningham's done media. So
if any other network or anybody wants to bring Sophie
Cunningham on, guess what, Like these are opening doors for
(16:52):
yourself and when you're so caught up in your jealousy
and can't swallow your pride, only hurting yourself. And I
think that's what we see with the Sophie Cunningham sort
of deal. She's popular, She's gonna be popular after the game.
She's twenty eight years old. Is she gonna be playing
w in the WNBA in ten years? I'm guessing no,
(17:13):
And I'm guessing at some point there're gonna be opportunities
for her that will make her say, well, I don't
want to play in the WNBA. I can make more
working for ABC, or I can be working more working
for Fox or NBC or something like that. Like those
are gonna be the those are gonna be the avenues.
I can work more just being an RB spokesperson, Like
those are the opportunities that are at hand. If all
(17:34):
you have to do is just stick up for a player,
by the way, who has done nothing but good for
the NBA, It's not like you're sticking up for oj Okay,
You're not doing that. You're sticking up for someone who
is innocent basically in all of this. That is all
that you're doing, and you could reap the benefits. Sophie
Cunningham's the only one who understands that.
Speaker 3 (17:56):
Yeah. I think there's also the side where all the
other maybe w A, NBA players are like, we are
going to band together and we're going to isolate the fever. Sure,
and that might be something that's also crazy to think,
because it's like, all you're doing is actually making them
more popular. Even by isolating them, they'll.
Speaker 1 (18:14):
Be isolated in front of their seventeen thousand fans a night.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Yes, even you doing that, it's not benefiting you. You're
still making them more popular, which is crazy. I mean,
what do we call what did.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
You call, Sophie, Sophie Stunningham stunning But you had me
at Arby's. Yeah, no one needs to sell me on Arby's.
I love Arby's, but I love it. What about if
I sold you on dairy Queen? I want both this afternoon.
Do you know it's miracring. It's Miracle Treat Day VQ.
That means one dollar or more for every Blizzard treat
(18:46):
is donated to your local member hospitals of Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals. Blizzard treats are even sweeter when they support
kids who need it most. DQ Happy taste good.
Speaker 3 (18:56):
Now I want a blizzard.
Speaker 1 (18:57):
Jealousy does not taste good. I love blizzards heath bar
until I die.
Speaker 3 (19:03):
I know, Yes, No, I don't like a heath bar.
What does a heath bar taste like it?
Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yes, so it's pretty good. Yes, it's really dense.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
No, I want like a cheesecake blizzard with a strawberry cheesecakes.
Speaker 4 (19:15):
Doesn't heath bar taste like score bar? Is it the
same substance?
Speaker 1 (19:20):
It's that's also English toffee, but they're made by different companies. Yes,
they're both delicious. The right thing is too it sticks
in your teeth or for you know, ten minutes later
you can get some to pick out. But I have
been heath bar forever with blizzards. My runner up is
Butterfinger with butter Finger.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Butterfinger Bebies back in the day.
Speaker 1 (19:42):
What, No, we're tiring about they what a Butterfinger Bebies? Yes? Yeah,
a little of the mini ones.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
Yes, but Bartimson used to do the commercials for.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Them, right, I do remember that but Butterfinger in a blizzard.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
That's worth taking out my tooth.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
Butter Fingers underrated under Butterfinger, it's delicious, bri Are you?
Are you a Butterfinger fan?
Speaker 5 (20:04):
I love Butterfinger ice cream and I'm actually just looking
up they have a so'mores blizzard like I'm headed there
after work?
Speaker 1 (20:10):
For sure?
Speaker 4 (20:11):
You want marshmallows in your blizzard?
Speaker 6 (20:13):
Out?
Speaker 4 (20:13):
Do marshmallows do well with ice cream?
Speaker 7 (20:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (20:17):
I'm not a fan. I think I think'mores are the
most overrated twitt.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
Are you serious? What did marshmallows do to you?
Speaker 1 (20:25):
It's not It's just like the combo like, it doesn't
It doesn't do it for me.
Speaker 3 (20:29):
I rather eat something else.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
We're talking about a traditional s'more like a Grand Tracker, Yeah,
a toasted mallow and Hershey's.
Speaker 1 (20:36):
Yes, yeah, it's it's a mess.
Speaker 3 (20:38):
Yes, yeah, I don't care for it.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
I think it's completely overrated.
Speaker 3 (20:40):
My golly wow.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
But in a blizzard, different scenario. She's Monty Blaios. I'm
dan by her in for Cavino and Rich here on

deals that we're going to be talking about here on CNR.
What's going on, Briannamuro Right like.
Speaker 5 (21:49):
A minute ago, the Rangers acquired right hand to pitcher
maryel Kelly.
Speaker 6 (21:53):
From the Diamondbacks. So that's exciting.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
Merril my hometown for we're talking about my hometown here,
Like Maryl's got a dairy queen, don't they. There's no
Costa Rica Jones that's been traded. There's been a Meryl
Kelly though.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
I'm just like, what are the Rangers doing? That's more
of what. I don't know what the race they're making
a good little posture right now. It's just they're trying
for nothing. They're trying for nothing.
Speaker 4 (22:18):
By the way, that was Monsey being utterly bored with
the Meryl topic. She's moving on. I do feel compelled
to say that Meryl makes a great hiking shoe.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Oh there, there we go.
Speaker 6 (22:29):
I just don't really know what Meryl means, Like, where
does Meryl come from?
Speaker 3 (22:32):
Have you heard her getName Meryl Streep?
Speaker 1 (22:34):
Oh no, but that's differ. I'm sorry, jeez, we are
here for a breeze. Final update, shift to sports radio
making a good one, great job.
Speaker 6 (22:47):
I was sitting next to Bersh and I almost cried.
I was pretty depressed.
Speaker 5 (22:50):
The Blue Jays are getting two time All Stars Shane
Bieber and closer Kyle Finnegan is headed to the Tigers
currently right now. There's a rain delay in New York
as Yankees are on top of their seven four and
in the NFL, guys, I know we have a surprise later,
but we're less than three hours away from the Hall
of Fame game between the Lions and the Charters.
Speaker 1 (23:08):
So we'll get you ready for that game tonight because
it is apropos. Appreciate it, Bree. As we mentioned, Manci,
it is Miracle Treat Day at DQ. Now what that
means is a dollar or more from every Blizzard treat
is donated to your local member hospitals of Children's Miracle
Network Hospitals. Blizzard treats are even sweeter when they support
kids who need it most. DQ Happy taste good? How
(23:32):
does it taste now that Carlos Korea is back as
a member of the Astros? Apparently not even bitter sweet?
Just bitter in the mouth of Jason Stewart's our executive producer,
who walked in and what an hour ago and says,
all right here, it is just another huge story dropping.
(23:52):
I'm and I looked around and I was like, am
I missing something? And then I in Moncy. Mancy I
think was straddling the lines because he understands as a
Dodger fan what Jason was going through, but maybe also
to me to be like, what's the big whoop?
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah, but I understand exactly where Jason's coming from, because
now Dodger fans are going to get their vocal cords
ready to start booing even harder every time he shows
up in an Astros uniform.
Speaker 1 (24:20):
Is that the reason why Jason is the reason why
this is a big deal is because he is going
back to where he cheated.
Speaker 4 (24:27):
It is and it also marks the second straight day
that Dan has questioned my editorial judgment. He didn't see
the big deal with the Gilbert Arenas thing twenty four
hours ago, and that's fine. Carlos Career returned to the Astros.
Let's see, he was one of the most vocal people
in the wake of the cheating scandal. He's the one
(24:49):
who got most offensive. Frankly, I think he speaks better
English than how Jose Altuve, so I think he kind
of took like a spokesman role in that thing. So
he's the most hate heable. And then they traded away
Bregnant or didn't sign Bregnant this offseason, so I'm like, oh,
the Astros are shedding twenty seventeen, and then they just
bring back the most hated figure. I think that's newsworthy,
(25:12):
But as a Dodger fan, that gives us even more
reason to hate the Astros.
Speaker 1 (25:16):
Now, I think it's newsworthy for Dodger fans, it is.
Speaker 3 (25:19):
No, they're getting very now everyone first game back for
the Astros at Dodger Stadium with him wherever. Whenever that
happens next, it's going to be wild because Jason is
not wrong. When they started trading everybody, it's like all
that was left washst Sale to Bay and so now
it's going to reignite the hate that maybe was starting
(25:41):
to dissipate. Is that the word I'm looking for here?
Because obviously the Dodgers have won and there's not as
many players on the team, so you kind of like
it's a little easier as you move on from it.
But now it's like reignited.
Speaker 1 (25:52):
I just don't know if everyone else cares, well, it
doesn't matter.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
Jason and I care.
Speaker 1 (25:57):
But that's that's that like that that's that's where it lies.
My angle of it. Of It doesn't mean that I'm
letting the Astros off the hook. Like they absolutely did.
But now it's been a years. It doesn't mean that
everything is good like this, like the Michigan football scandal,
like people are already past it, and as an Ohio
(26:18):
State fan, it draves me nuts because the penalties haven't
even been handed down yet and people are all like, bah,
who cares, we saw what they did on the field, Like,
what are you talking about? At least this is eight
years gone by, where the other twenty eight teams have
moved on apparently twenty nine, maybe because the Astros were
jets jettisoning, jettison players, That's what I was trying to say.
(26:40):
But it feels that it's just such again, it's just
such a Dodger sort of thing.
Speaker 4 (26:44):
But it's Rob Manfred's fault. So if you're a Dodger
fan or not, none of the players received a punishment,
They got immunity to tell the story. Alex Korra and
aj Hinch are managers right now, like the penalty, and
they didn't take away the title because I think Manfred
said at the time it's a slippery slope taken away titles. Well,
(27:05):
if you're not going to take away the title of
players that knew what pitches were coming during the postseason
that they won the title? Like, what are you taken
away from? Which reminds me jose L Twova's number twenty seven.
Keep that in mind as you hear this chanter at
a recent Dodger game.
Speaker 1 (27:22):
Is that what twenty seven stamps for the number of
pitches you saw coming to the twenty seventeen postseason? Huh?
Is that what twenty seventh stamps for?
Speaker 2 (27:34):
Answer me, that is the most mouthful of a tackling
I've ever heard.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
That was a I don't know how much have he
that he caught?
Speaker 4 (27:44):
I bet he never. He's never gotten that one before, though.
Speaker 1 (27:46):
Well, that was the thing that shocked me, is like,
what were the odds at the camera was rolling at
that time, you know, to catch that. It's a good point,
like how lucky we were in this universe. It was
almost like it was taken just a play back on
national radio the next day. Yeah, no other reason, none whatsoever.
And then they were able to put it into the system,
(28:07):
even though it was somewhat difficult.
Speaker 3 (28:09):
Dan is not wrong about maybe the Dodger fan base
are the only ones that have not fully gone over this,
But in reality, all the teams should be mad about
this still because like Rob Manfred, literally how Jason explained,
Now you know, if somebody cheats against your team, it
no matter. Everything's just gonna be fine. I'm under the
(28:29):
eyes of the commissioner.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
I am teaching Manzi about golf. Trust me, I'm gonna
come around to what you're saying. These are the reason
it's gonna take the scenic roud on this way. In fact,
there's like new things Manzi's learning every day about the
sport of golf that I'm trying to teach her. But
one of the things in golf, in when you're playing
in a tournament, it's something called protecting the field. I
don't think it's an uncommon phrase, but for those that
may not know, if you're playing with another player who
(28:53):
has a ball, let's say cross you know, a red line,
red steak and goes into the water hazard. If that
player is playing forty yards further up, saying this is
where the golf ball crossed, it is your responsibility as
a player to protect the rest of the field to
call that player out and say no, I don't think
your ball crossed the line there. It very easy, It
(29:16):
would be easy to say, yeah, just go ahead, just
go ahead, drop it there, it's fine, which we all do.
But there is something called protecting the field. That is
what you are talking about. You're saying all the other
teams should be mad about this because they are part
of the field in all of this, and that Rob
Manfred did not protect the field by allowing these punishments
or by not punishing them enough. So I completely understand
(29:40):
what you're saying. Even though I just think that the
Dodgers are the only team that cares about this deal,
I think that your point is well made.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
I love that explanation with golf.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
I have never heard that protecting everybody else, even though
it's the person directly with you, it could very easily
go yeah, go ahead and take the drive, holding them
accountable exactly, absolutely, yeah, And everybody else isn't there, so
you're it's the phrase called protecting the field. Jason Stewart
did not protect the field when he just threw me
under the bus. He also secretly in a text through
(30:10):
Iowa Sam under the bus yesterday when when you referenced
Petros on PMS locally on AM five seventy playing poker
face underneath the Gilbert Arenas story, which I thought was
a subtle shot at Sam, because Sam loves to take
the music and connect it with topics. It's a tech
producer's dream. And Jason, were you taking a shot at Sam?
(30:33):
That Sam was not thinking on his feet, but whoever
was at the board at A five seventy was on
their feet.
Speaker 4 (30:40):
Just by rule, if your question is were you taking
a dig at Sam, the answer is almost always yes.
I take my opportunities to do that almost every time.
But no, Yeah, so I'm listening to our flagship Petro
some money I think Jonas was in with for Matt
money Smith and yeah, under the Gilbert Arena story that
(31:02):
he didn't think it was a big deal. They started talking,
They started talking, and poker face was underneath it. It
was a call back to an off air conversation I
had with Sam. What should we bump into to talk
about Gilbert Arenas? He thought poker face, and I thought
we should do dirty laundry because we just got done
talking about new things. Okay, that's where this is really
(31:24):
inside baseball. So shot, but it wasn't right.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
He ended up outing himself there because it was a
good decision to play poker face underneath and I show just.
Speaker 1 (31:33):
Because somebody else did it didn't mean it was a
good Listen.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
The people over at AM five to seven, Ronnie Fossio
and Sendy know what they're doing.
Speaker 1 (31:40):
Okay, So you know, we could have played gambler like
we do with Doug Kenny Rodgers, could have played that.
That whole thing is.
Speaker 3 (31:46):
Obviously the poker face is the answer, because they were
playing poker.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
Yeah, this isn't very This isn't very complex stuff. It's
pretty sick with stuff here.
Speaker 1 (31:54):
But it's just Jason taking the opportunity, which I thought
was actually ripping on Sam, but maybe it was ripping
on himself for that. All I do know is in
the commercial break that we could have talked about it.
We were talking about Moncey and jason S dentist appointment.
It's Covino run Rich here on Fox Sports Radio. It's
also Miracle Treat Day at DQ. Did you know about this?
Speaker 3 (32:13):
I did. It is Miracle Tree Day at DQ, which

Speaker 1 (32:37):
Covindo un Rich Here on Fox Sports Radio. It's July thirty. First,
she's Monty Blaio. So I'm Dan Beyer. Football season is here.
You know how I know it's football season. Being ten
network is airing Iowa football. And in the second quarter
from a game eleven years ago, it was still zero
(32:58):
zero until of course, so Iowa's defense put them on
the board. So yeah, one defensive touchdown. It's the tradition,
unlike any other Iowa football that even in July, they're
not scoring on offense.
Speaker 3 (33:09):
That's old.
Speaker 2 (33:10):
That's an old trope there, Dan, this is a game
from twenty fourteen, and you turned this off. I think
Nebraska won this game.
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Literally just said it was from eleven years ago. So
even eleven years ago they weren't scoring. That's what I
was saying.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
They're going to have a heck of an offense this
year at least.
Speaker 3 (33:23):
Do you prefer as a big football fan, do you
prefer a high scoring game like a you know, thirty
four to thirty one, or the super Bowl that happened
not long ago where.
Speaker 1 (33:33):
It was like thirteen. Yes, yeah, that super Bowl it was.
It was awful. When you have two defenses. There is
something about.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
A chess match in scrying exactly.
Speaker 1 (33:45):
Breaking through as opposed to just everyone. Yes, when you
have a high scoring affairs, who's going to make the mistake?
That's kind of what it is. So I have an
appreciation of if I had to pick my if I
had my brothers, it would probably be the defensive battle. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
I like the defensive battle more too than a high
scoring game, if I'm being honest.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
So this game is seven to nothing at the eight
minute mark before the half. This game ended thirty seven
to thirty four, Nebraska winning.
Speaker 3 (34:14):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
So it actually exploded into a bit of a you know,
back and forth.
Speaker 1 (34:18):
I'm sure the Big Ten network appreciates you letting the
cat out of the bag.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
Sorry, I spoiled it from a meaningless game from eleven
years ago.
Speaker 1 (34:27):
The career of Trey Lance has been spoiled, but not
in a good way, not like spoiled rotten you would
giving a bunch of kids. It just hasn't been good.
From third overall pick of the San Francisco forty nine
Ers in the twenty twenty one NFL Draft to now
a backup quarterback to the backup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
As Trey Lance gets the start tonight for the Chargers
(34:48):
in the Hall of Fame game against the Lions, there
are a lot of conversations about what could have been
with the San Francisco forty nine Ers. Ultimately they end
up with Rock Purty. I don't want to say that
all wasn't lost, but it could have been much worse
for them if they didn't have that apparent replacement that
(35:09):
they used on the last pick of the draft. So
it's worked out in the end, just not as planned
on how San Francisco wanted it. So I think more
of the story, though, is about Trey Lance, and I
don't know what's going to happen tonight. I don't think
it's going to matter tonight monci mm hmm. But he'll
take the field and he'll be the starting quarterback in
(35:29):
a game where we're not going to know a lot
of the players' names. And it's crazy to see the
fall from again a guy who was a the third
overall pick just four years ago, now starting a Hall
of Fame game.
Speaker 3 (35:40):
It's something I can't wrap my head around. You can't
wrap your head around WNBA players not falling in Sophie
Cunningham's clear trajectory of popularity by defending Caitlin Clark. I
can't wrap my head around Trey Lance's short lived, underwhelming
career because sometimes I wonder was it just about bad
luck Dan getting injured? Didn't he break his ankle? Breaking
(36:05):
his ankle with San Francisco and then San Francisco having
Brock Perdy to immediately take his spot, then bad luck is,
let's be real, going to the Cowboys. I don't think
that was gonna help him under Dak Prescott with Jerry
Jones and we know all the drama there is. It
has just been bad luck for him. And maybe with
(36:25):
the Chargers it can help something. Because I feel like
to say we know what he can and can't do,
We actually don't know. I need the thirty for thirty
done in forty five minutes.
Speaker 1 (36:35):
He ends up taking over for an injured Jimmy Garoppolo
in twenty twenty one, saw some action there and then
the next year was named the starter in twenty twenty two.
That's when he ended up getting injured, and then the
rest was history because Garoppolo and then Purdy comes along
later after that. So he starts third string in twenty
(36:57):
twenty three, gets traded to Dallas. Thinks he's going to
be Maybe not Trey Lance thinking this. People said that
he's going to be a threat to Dak Prescott. Never was,
and now he's the backup to Justin Herbert and the
backup to Taylor Heineke. So third string. It's not all
bad luck. I think that the bad luck came with
(37:17):
Trey Lance. Covid played it played a part of this
because you didn't have a twenty twenty season for him.
But also, just to sum it up, I think the
forty nine ers made an NBA pick in the NFL
and the NFL is we want to know everything about you,
up and down, so much so that we're asking questions
(37:38):
that maybe inappropriate meetings, just because we want to find
out every fiber of your being. In the NBA, the
more that you know about someone, the less appealing that
they seemingly are. You want to dream big. You want
to have that six' eleven seven seven foot power. Forward
that can play for five different. Positions, shoot the three
also defend at the. Rim but when they're eighteen years
(37:59):
old and there's seven feet you, say my, goodness what
could we have? Here and that's WHAT i think it
was With Trey lance because his one season was so,
good but it was in AN fcs. Level on one,
season you had no idea what the next season was
going to. Be you didn't know if you could do
it at the next, level and ends up being injury
prone in a, way that's bad. Luck that's WHERE i
(38:22):
think the bad luck was was he was AN nba
type draft pick in THE, nfl AND i think that's
what ended up burning The San francisco forty nine.
Speaker 3 (38:29):
Ers that's crazy to really think of it that, way
because it's a quarterback pick. Here you didn't just pick
another position that you were taking a risk. At you
picked your quarterback of the future at that. Moment SO
i just it's hard for me to not just be
like it was bad luck after bad luck after bad.
Speaker 1 (38:48):
Luck but people don't try to draft six men off the.
Bench they try to draft the Next. Dirk they try
to draft the Next. Giannis AND i think that's what
the forty nine ers were hoping to.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Do of course they.
Speaker 1 (38:59):
Were She's Aanci, Belanos I'm Dan. Byer the hottest couple
in sports is. Here
