They say it's the worst call of all time. Not

Welcome in. We're not doing this by ourselves. Isaac Loohincron
is here, as is our executive producer. Jason Stewart. Hello Jason,
Hello Every Monday, Christopher Fetts in place of Iowa Sam Today,
(01:06):
Jason Stewart, Yes to.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
Say, is he the first person to ever take off
the day for the Redly Quest Bowl.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Gotta be ready.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
I'm sick. I got word that Sam is under the
weather air quotes. I'm I'm not using air quotes on
the radio. I'm not doing that. I will say that
maybe he pregamed too hard for this. Iowa relya Quest
Bowl which ended up in victory over Vanderbilt Today, as
you heard Isaac glowing Kron and the update, a lot
(01:34):
of games going on will keep you updated, but the
game that we're talking about and it spreads to a
bigger picture. Just like Cavino and Rich, we love to
include you guys in on the conversation eight seven seven
nine nine on Fox eight seven seven nine nine six
six three sixty nine. The reason I give that number
out now and don't call because you don't even know
what we're going to talk about. But we love audience
(01:56):
participation because you know, somewhere, at some point in your
sporting life, you remembered an awful call that went against
your team, and an awful call is one that will
stick with you forever. How do I know this because
it seems to be one of the only talking points
(02:17):
leading up to tonight's game between Miami and Ohio State,
and I am looking right now at an article Aeron
Torres from the Sporting News from just three days ago.
Sure in talking about the National Championship game from the
two thousand and two season. It happened in early January
of two thousand and three in the Fiesta Bowl, and
(02:38):
the title says for the Sporting News was Glenn Sharp's
pass interference the Miami defensive back on Ohio State wide
receiver and cornerback Chris Gamble. The quote the pass interference
call was it the quote worst call of all time? Woo.
So when talking about this game tonight, where players who
(03:00):
are playing in the game tonight, not only do they
have no recollection of it, many of them not born.
Say there may be one or two, maybe a handful
of players that were born as this game was being played,
But we're talking about eighteen, nineteen, twenty year old guys.
They don't even know anything about this game unless they
watched it on a DVD or founded on YouTube. If
(03:24):
you need a refresher on how that game didn't end
while some thought it did end. This was Keith Jackson
and Dan Fouts on ABC on the call that National
Championship night, we're.
Speaker 4 (03:40):
Repped up there as a white out two.
Speaker 5 (03:42):
The ball goes into the end zone and that is
in you com fate intended for Gambo.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Now there is a penalty flag throne. Hold on on
the phone.
Speaker 6 (03:52):
Everybody comes running down on the field.
Speaker 4 (03:55):
You gotta get off because there's a penalty flag throne,
and I think it's against Miami. And if it's thrown
in the end zone, the ball will be placed on
the one yard line. First in gold Glenn Sharp trying
to cover Chris Gambell that he may have arrived.
Speaker 5 (04:11):
Ten too soon, Brandy, Chris call pass.
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Yeah, Glenn Sharp thirty one on Chris Gamble number seven. Oh,
that's a tough call there. What about this Sagle bat call?
Speaker 5 (04:27):
That call?
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Okay, Dan fouts twenty three years later, it was the
right call. You just got a bad replay. So the
replay that you see sees two guys going up for
a football and Gamble and Sharp and what seems like
a jump all situation in passing interference was called. The
contact on the play that actually rose to the level
of pass interference came before those players were put on camera.
(04:52):
It was not in the end zone. In a jump
ball situation. If Craig Crensl had thrown the football. By
the way, this is just me going off on Dan
Fouts twenty three years later. If Craig Crenzel still had
the football in his hand when the play happened, it
would have been defensive holding. What the referees were discussing
was was it pass interference or was it defensive holding.
(05:15):
It ended up rising to the level of pass interference
because the interference came when the ball was in the air.
That is my story and I'm sticking to it and
the reason why official Terry Porter made that call. It
may have been a late call. It was a call
that Miami jumped the gun and thought that they had
won a national championship, but a late flag came in.
It is not the worst call of all time Sporting News,
(05:36):
and it is not bad call Dan Fouts. Now, as
I look at it from that way, it is amazing
that twenty three years later we are still talking about
this play. And that's where we start. Controversial calls in sports,
the calls that you remember to this day because of
how they affected the outcome of some of the most
(05:59):
important sports events of our lifetime.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Do I dare read the headline that I just found.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
Let's read it.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yes, okay, So Glenn Sharp, who was the defensive back,
was later.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
Charged with murder. I'm just gonna say it. He was, Okay.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
I've been looking to see if I can confirm that
he was ever convicted or not, but I cannot find
it anywhere on the internet, which is kind of amazing.
The headline from off Tackle Empire in twenty twelve, Glenn Sharp,
Glenn Sharp charged with first degree murder and he still
committed pass interference.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
See no person that's faring without even thout. Well not
so much because fouts and Sporting News feel a certain way.
But everybody complains, and Miami complains, and the U complains,
and everybody complains about that call. But it's a call.
Whether whether you liked it or not, it still is
talked about to this day. So now that brings us
(06:53):
to this point instead of talking about is Ohio State
going to be able to match up with Miami's offensive
defensive lines, which has been talked about and vice versa.
By the way, for the Buckeyes and Hurricanes, it's not
so much been that in ken Ohio State rebound from
their loss to Indiana. It's been more about mentioning this
game and really where these two programs have gone since
(07:15):
that point, because that was kind of the end of
the U Part two and then the start of the
real rise for Ohio State, where they've been on an
unbelievable heater for the past twenty years, starting with that
national championship win.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
Yeah, So to the game really quick. Can I just say,
first of all, I have been genuinely shocked how many
people are trying to play up that narrative of oh two.
That the reason that the two programs went in different directions.
One was coached by Jim Tressel, the other was coached
by Larry Koker. It's really that simple. That is why
the two programs went in two different directions. Whatever, So
(07:51):
I'm gonna give you one. The stakes were not nearly
as high. But I will tell you the most memorable,
awful miss call that I can remember. It was the
Armando Galarraga play that robbed him of a perfect game. Yes,
and it stands out because one profet you know, may
(08:13):
have been in Comerica Park that day June second, twenty ten,
but it stands out because in the moment you like,
you know, pass interference is by definition a fifty to
fifty judgment play, hm Armando Galiraga. In the moment you
knew it was like, oh he the ump just missed that.
(08:35):
Jim Joyce, by the way, was the ump. We still
know his name fifteen years later. He missed it. There's
no replay, there's no way to get it right, there's
no flag to throw, there's no challenge this. It was
just a perfect game that should have been a perfect game.
That wasn't a perfect game. And you knew it in
the moment.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
It wasn't.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
You had to look at ten different replays and maybe
the need you know, maybe the foot touched the bait. No, no, no,
it was wrong in the moment, and he knew it
right away.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Let's hear that moment.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Round ball, right side, Cabrera.
Speaker 5 (09:06):
We'll cut it off.
Speaker 7 (09:07):
Coloraga turs.
Speaker 8 (09:09):
He's out, He's safe, he is safe.
Speaker 1 (09:16):
He is safe at first, babe, are you kidding me?
Speaker 3 (09:19):
Why is he safey?
Speaker 1 (09:21):
There you go?
Speaker 3 (09:22):
He that call robbed everybody of something. It robbed like
that call right there made me realize that it robbed
the announcers of the opportunity to call a perfect game.
When you're looking back on your career thirty years later,
what were the highlights I'll never forget when I was
there when Armando Galarraga threw a perfect game for the Tigers.
Now you can say I'll never forget when Jim Joyce
(09:45):
messed up the perfect game for Armando Galarraga, but it
doesn't have the gravitas of actually having a perfect game.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Jason Stewart, remember yesterday, twenty four hours ago, you and
Monse bill Anios were having a heated bait about whether
or not pukin Akua's play on Monday night was a catch.
And I'm gonna reiterate my stance on this. I actually
did some umpiring in little league in high school, and
my whole thing was reward the great play. So if
(10:14):
there's a if there's like a diving play at shortstop
and he makes a throw that's a banger, you need
to have the awareness in the situation to reward the
great play. Nobody's gonna argue with you if you call
him out. This was a thing with Jim Joyce, like,
you need to have the awareness of these moment, this situation.
I couldn't believe at that time that a veteran umpire
(10:37):
would on a banger not just give it to the
defense for the situation for baseball, And so that's kind
of my overall thing, like reward the play, Reward the
great play, Reward the great moment. Jim Joyce didn't have
that in that moment.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
I love how the Tigers and we look at it
as like what a touching moment, But I almost feel
they were like, you know what, You're gonna go to
home plate. You're gonna hand up the hand of the
lineup card the next day, you know. And Joyce is
crying at home plate and feeling emotional about what went on.
But it's also a kind of a yeah, we remember, Yeah,
(11:14):
they actually everybody's gonna remember this for that long and
they you know, they I don't want to. He apologized
for making the call. People try to get the call
overturned and turned around. That never happened. Everybody saw the
missed call and there was nothing they could do about
it because of his actions. And to your point, Jason,
what is worse Armando Coloraga not having a perfect game
(11:38):
because of that call or having a perfect game because
the guy was safe? Right? Like what? Like it is
one hundred times worse of not having the perfect game.
It's not even close. You much rather would have the
perfect game. Be like, you know what, he was actually safe.
He'm like, well it was like it is it is.
It's not even close. It is so much war to
(12:00):
not have the perfect game because of the announcer, because
of the fans that were there, that stayed for all
the nine innings, all the memories that they had. That
is it is a one hundred times worse to not
have the perfect game as opposed to having it and
having a blown call.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
Here's the other thing too. I don't want to steal
anybody else's, but I'm guessing.
Speaker 1 (12:19):
They're salmon up. You don't want to sam it up.
Speaker 2 (12:20):
I don't want to sam it up. No, no, no, But
I'm sure you're gonna reference. There's two or three that
immediately come to mind. I won't sit him, but big moments,
big games, playoffs, nfcchit whatever, college football National tips. It
was June second, twenty ten. So to Dan's point, if
you call him safe and you're not sure, like this
doesn't I know baseball purest Oh, every game one hundred
(12:41):
and sixty two, they all count. They don't all count
it was June second, It wasn't October eleventh in Game
four of the LCS. Okay, anyway, that's my only point.
That a regular season game, That's what I mean.
Speaker 3 (12:53):
Yes, this did the call with Ohio State with official
Terry Porter. We I know his name. I know Miami
fans know his name, and I'm sure Ohio State fans
know his name. I think the country knows Jim Joyce, yes,
and I don't know if the country knows Terry Porter.
But there are other officials that have made calls that
we remember. Isaac Lohenkron, do you have a nominee in
(13:14):
terms of calls controversial calls in sports?
Speaker 1 (13:17):
I do.
Speaker 9 (13:18):
Let's go back to the NFC Championship game after the
twenty eighteen season. The Rams and the Saints tied at
twenty one forty nine left in the fourth quarter, New
Orleans with a third down and ten at the Rams
thirteen yard line.
Speaker 10 (13:33):
Passes incomplete, no flag for Tommy Lee, Lewis mkil Roby
Coleman delivered a hit and the two officials talk to
each other. Crowd's going crazy as there's no flag that
should have been a penalty and John Payton is justifiably.
Speaker 9 (13:53):
Upset, And obviously it had a lot to do with
the Rams going to the Super Bowl and the Saints,
not that it was so clear and blatant and it
was so impactful. I think the NFL, if I can remember,
over corrected because the next year pass interference could be
challenged and how was he an even bigger disaster if
(14:14):
I remember.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
It was such a disaster that in Week two the
Seahawks got a pass interference call in their benefit against
the Steelers on a basically a jump ball in the NFL,
there was like a fifty yard penalty, and the NFL
is like, you know what, Yeah, we're not gonna do
this anymore, Like it will change the rule at the
end of the year, but we're not calling like get
(14:35):
stopped after two weeks because of how absurd it was.
It was so absurd. When I see those white Ram helmets,
that's what I think of, Like that's the play. I
don't think of their return to LA I think of,
was it Tommy Lee Lewis, the receiver for the Saints,
that they that Joe Buck mentioned him like all of
(14:57):
his limbs are in the air after being hit on
the play. With the football still in somewhat catchable, you know, relevance,
and that's what I remember of it. But when I
see those white horns, I can't help but not think
of that play in New Orleans.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Wasn't there Wasn't there a thing in our talk space here.
Wasn't there like a that's bs, the NFL just wants
the new NFL LA team to be in the Super Bowl.
Wasn't that a weird kind of theory that week?
Speaker 3 (15:26):
Yes, and I found that there was a theory that
because of Bounty Gait and Sean Payton, that they didn't
want them in that that was the theory. Now, the
play calling leading up to that play, it was not
some of Sean Payton's finer moments, Like there were opportunities
where they could have played it better, done it better
with the clock, but they they didn't. They had missed opportunities.
I think they tried to throw a screen to like
(15:48):
Michael Thomas and it ended up being dropped or it
was was in the ground or too low for him
to handle, but it wasn't. It wasn't the finest moment.
But in that situation when you have a guy appears
to be open and then just gets leveled before the
ball even gets there. By the way, it's the play
that I still go back to when I hear the
NFL saying like, do we need eight officials? No, we
(16:10):
just need better officials. That's what we need. We just
need better officials. We need full time officials. We need
guys who played the game. We need guys. It's not
an age is a sort of thing, but they're relying
on guys who have a lot of years in the
National Football League. You need to develop younger officials and
(16:30):
bring them along and move them along and have a
new core of guys because there's just not There's so
much that goes on and there's so much at stake.
That is definitely one of the worst calls.
Speaker 11 (16:40):
Chris Purfett, Yeah, there's a lot of directions I could
go in this. And since we're in Detroit, I could
talk about the picked up flag in the Cowboys Lions
playoff game that was because it feels like a lot
goes against Detroit. And I could nerd out and start
talking about soccer, about the Maradona hand of God, the
handball that was missed sure between Argentina, but let's iowas
with some more Yeah, yeah, no, I'm gonna go I'm
(17:01):
gonna go back this because I since we're talking about
the NFL and we're talking about officials here, and we're
talking about how look, how do you get a By
the way, I.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Love how he subtly IOWA sammed this up. Did you
guys catch this?
Speaker 1 (17:16):
I was trying not.
Speaker 3 (17:17):
It was trying to like, so there's somebody that is
probably tweeting in or calling in the like Maradona hand
of good. It has a Wikipedia entry. Chris already just
said it. So I'm not gonna call it.
Speaker 11 (17:28):
Okay, I'm going I'm gonna stop it at this one.
With this, this was this was Phil Luckett not getting
a coin toss right on Thanksgiving between the Steelers and
the Lions. You can hear him Jerome Bettis saying, I said,
I said tales. That's so spoiler.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
Its Lions go on to win that game over Pittsburgh.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
I felt bad until the revenge came where Jerome Bettis
got to win in Detroit over the Seahawks and Super
Bowl forty because of some by the way awful officiating
calls throughout that game. I could just put Super Bowl
forty as a as a topic here, but I will
not do so. But that's a great call. I'll always
remember that Thanksgiving. Jerome bettis looking around with that look
on his face, like what what's going on? What's said?
Speaker 1 (18:09):
Tails?
Speaker 2 (18:09):
Yes, first time ever people considered a video replay on
coin toss is going forward.
Speaker 1 (18:15):
No, I'm kidding, bad joke, bet.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Again, my whole solution. Don't know what my coin toss
solution is. So the NFL is mucho dollars. Sure, just
put the helmet of one team on one side and
the helmet of the other team on the other side,
and don't ask what, flip it up and whatever team
comes up, that's who gets the choice, right. They don't
need to do heads or tails like it's It's pretty simple.
(18:39):
It's and then you know what you do. You auction
that coin off to be like, oh, guess what I
have the coin from Week fourteen when the Dolphins ended
up playing the Jets.
Speaker 11 (18:50):
You could even make this part of the schedule announcement day.
You have like a full minting that you show off,
show off every game with the coins that are minted
that will be used in those games.
Speaker 3 (18:59):
I think gets very very easy. For the NFL, but
they choose not to listen to me. Jason, do we
have any feedback on the lines on who wants to
get in on controversial calls before I add another? All right,
let's go to the line first. Who do we got?
Speaker 8 (19:15):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (19:16):
No, you know what, let me uh, let's skip that.
Speaker 3 (19:19):
I'll give you, I'll give you mine. Rameil Robinson nineteen
eighty nine National Championship Game college basketball, Michigan against Seaton Hall.
Michigan's down by one. Ramel Robinson dribbles up the court,
dribbles in the middle of the lane, wasn't even going
to shoot, was looking to pass the ball, and somehow
a foul on the floor was called a reach in
(19:40):
giving him two free throws with three seconds left, he
makes both. Seat in the hall, gets off a last
second prayer from about twenty three feet bounce his heart
off the backboard. Michigan ends up winning the National championship.
Isaac lohncron Okay, hold on a second, you want to
hear it. Let's hear it.
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Oh, sure, Michigan's ball. They've got an opportunity here now,
but win it. They've got a hurry. Five seconds.
Speaker 6 (20:07):
Robinson goes foul call with three seconds.
Speaker 10 (20:12):
A foul against Satan Hall with three seconds.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
If there was a phantom foul, uh, Brent Musburger, Billy Packers,
CBS Sports on the call. If there ever was a
phantom foul, it was in the Kingdome that day in Seattle.
One of the worst calls in college basketball history.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Well, and that goes to what we were saying earlier
with Galarraga and Jim Joyce is like no one remembers
the fifty to fifty call that doesn't get called. Everybody
remembers the ten ninety call that does get.
Speaker 1 (20:46):
Called, or the zero one percent. You know what I'm saying. Like,
you know.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Somebody will say, well, Romel Robinson had to make those
free throws. Well, he shouldn't have had to shoot the
free throws that would have given him. There's three seconds
left in the game, somebody's gonna have to throw up
a rusher field shot. He had two opportunities to keep
them alive. He made them both, so they actually won.
He all he had to do is make one of
two and there in overtime like they're trailing by one.
It was such an awful call.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Real quick, I know it's a cliche thing to say,
but I am of the belief everyone says, like, if
it's a foul in the first minute, it should be
a foul in the last minute. I actually fundamentally disagree
with that. I think, certainly, if a foul is a
non negotiable, like especially in basketball, if the penalty is
a non negotiable, But if it's like a fifty to
fifty call, I would rather.
Speaker 1 (21:30):
Just the dudes on the court figured it out. I
don't know if that makes it.
Speaker 3 (21:32):
I think Jason's there with you, like on the Jim
Joyce call, like they to his point, like, yeah, if
you if it's close, you're gonna ring them up, like
reward the play. All right, who do we got on
the line?
Speaker 1 (21:41):
Jason, Richard Richard in Seattle? All right, you're there, Richard.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Hey, even though I'm the Seahawks, Richard is historic.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
The fail. Mary, Yes, yes, I agree with you. It's
such an awful call with replacement rights.
Speaker 11 (22:01):
I believe that game like that had to be the
reason they brought the refs back. I don't think of
the film, Mary, hadn't happened, that lockout would have continued
with the officials.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
Yeah, I agree, it was so bad, and as a
Seahawks fan, I remember or I was watching that game.
It was at my now wife then girlfriend's apartment, and
I'm like, they're going to actually give them the touchdown
because these idiots think that ty goes to the offense
even though there wasn't. There wasn't anything close to a tie,
but there was a joint possession after the fact, but
(22:33):
it was clearly an interception by Green Bay and the
replacement refs. By the way that replacement ref went on
did radio interviews, may have written a book took full
advantage of it.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
Who do we got, Jason, Josh Fresno, Josh, are you there?
Speaker 12 (22:46):
Yep, I'm here.
Speaker 3 (22:48):
Controversial calls in sports? What's your nominee?
Speaker 12 (22:52):
I would say it's not one call. I would say
it would have to be a confluence of calls that
were in one direction versus the other. That's got to
be the Sacramento Kings versus the LA Lakers.
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Oh my god, yes, Isaac Longkron is right there with you.
The look on his face when you started to say
Sacramento Kings.
Speaker 1 (23:10):
I was at that game. I covered that game. Oh yeah,
that goes down in history. I remember at the.
Speaker 9 (23:16):
Time how long it lasted. But I will say this
as I recall and I got to confirm it. At
the same time. You have the Sacramento Kings free throw
shooting in Game seven that was about fifty percent. So
that's why that conspiracy theory was as exciting as it is,
(23:38):
I think just doesn't hold one well.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Also, they probably thought they weren't going to get any calls,
so they weren't prepping for their free throws in Game seven,
so that's probably why they missed all of that to shit.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
Here, when did the Robert Ory thing happen? When that
was Game four of that series.
Speaker 3 (23:51):
Here's one thing that I'll say, because it all started
out with the Miami Ohio State, whether it be with
Jim Joyce, whether it be with hand of God, whether
it be with Phil Luckett and his coin toss, those
are kind of in dispute. Like the Rameil Robinson play
that I brought up, nobody has seen a foul except
(24:12):
that official the Miami Ohio State one. Maybe it's just
me and the Buckeye fans that feel like there is
still that there was past interference, But the Jim Joyce
one clear is freaking day. I don't know if the
Rams fans would have an argument for what, uh, you
know what happened to Tommy Lee Lewis of the Saints,
who is at Nikkel Robbie Coleman on the on the
(24:36):
defensive hits on that play, But those pretty indefensible. I
don't know anybody who's like, you know what, that's not
past interference, like it was totally past interference.
Speaker 5 (24:45):

Sesame Street helped raise all of us. Now it's our turn.
Donate this holiday season at Sesame dot org because the
world needs Sesame and Sesame needs you. Controversial calls this
on the heels of tonight's I don't know if it's
a rematch, Aaron, but I mean.
Speaker 2 (25:12):
Not you, but society stop calling it happened twenty three
years ago. It's they've played Dan, correct me. I think
they played a home and home in the regular season.
Yes they did, Yes, yep, it was. It wasn't last year.
Old Missing Georgia is a rematch from two months ago.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Ohio State played at Miami and I think had twelve
yards passing the entire game. It was they also played
like prior to that nineteen ninety nine and it was
right when the U was about to take off again
like during that run, and they crushed them at the
Meadowlands in New Jersey. Jason Stewart's here, Isaac Lowncrowt's gonna
have an update in the set. Christperfette hanging out Jason.
(25:49):
Who do we got on the line in our controversial
Calls and sports?
Speaker 1 (25:54):
Hey? Dan, Yes, I've got three callers on the line, Okay,
that are going to inform us of just through the
volume of calls, what we missed last last segment. We
missed on such a major one that three callers rushed
to their phones and called Fox Sports Radio. We have
(26:16):
a trip in Vegas. We have Danny in Southern California
and Matt in Kansas, each of these to tell us
what happened. Okay, So it's a toy.
Speaker 3 (26:30):
Three.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
I think that's perfect. That's perfect. I think it sounds perfect. Kay,
trip in Vegas? What what did we miss?
Speaker 7 (26:38):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (26:39):
Two?
Speaker 7 (26:39):
Actually we missed the.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Okay, stop stop stop stop I'm sorry, Trip, you can't
Iowa sammit like it's one of the other you know.
So it's also.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Three people called in to say the same one, Tucker roll,
the general one is that the one.
Speaker 1 (26:58):
It's fair pretty big one.
Speaker 3 (27:00):
Gosh, I don't mean to cut Trip off. Trip.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Are you still there, Danny?
Speaker 7 (27:03):
Yes, I got one. Yeah, the NFL, I mean, who
knows that Drew blacks Up takes over the next year?
There is no Tom Brady and and I'm still sore
about it.
Speaker 3 (27:17):
Yeah, you guys talking over who's it? It's tripping?
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Can I take the trip?
Speaker 3 (27:25):
I'm tripping right now? All right? So Trip, So you're
saying tuck rule, are you on the side of it?
Speaker 7 (27:31):
I got another one? I got a better one.
Speaker 3 (27:33):
Oh okay, Hey, all right, okay, So Danny tuck Rull, Yeah,
you're right about the blood cell. You're right about the Brady,
absolutely the one we missed. What's your other one? Trip?
All right?
Speaker 7 (27:46):
How about I don't know if y'all said this nineteen ninety,
wasn't it? Uh? Colorado got five downs against Missouri?
Speaker 3 (27:53):
Yes they did, Yes, the fifth Dollard Big Eight Conference. Absolutely,
five downs. That's great, great call. That is what I
that's that was worth it. He could have Iowa Sam
did for bringing that one back. There was the rocket
Ismael clip against Colorado later on in the college football season,
(28:16):
but that was a clip. It was a block in
the back. I think that there's this is Aaron. You're
not to this point yet, Jason, is I am Isaac
maybe getting there soon. When there's a call that I
felt like somebody would definitely bring up and no one has,
You're like, maybe maybe that was just too long ago.
(28:39):
Don Denkinger nineteen eighty five World Series. Oh oh, we
we had another call.
Speaker 1 (28:45):
In fact, James and Tacoma doesn't want to be sammed up.
Go ahead, James, what did you want to say?
Speaker 7 (28:52):
That's the wise mentioned in John deak Mister ninety five
Roll Stories, Game six, calling George or say the first base.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
Let's hear the call, Let's hear how it happened.
Speaker 6 (29:04):
We'll swimmer to the right side. Laurel races over the
cover that though doesn't get him. Warrel got to the
bank and an arguing in here yours version amongst the
other quartet looks like you now, I don't think there's
any doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
That was the call. By the way, that was Al
Michaels on the cause for for ABC.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Av SiGe with Jim Palmer. First of all, Chris, send
the send that portion of this segment where we had
triple calls about one thing, send it to the Marconi
Awards if he could before the end of the show.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Yeah, yeah, he was. I gonna defend myself, okay for
the Iowas Sam comment that Jason made, because Jason said,
we have three callers, they all have the same thing.
So they all had the Tuck rule. That's where it was.
That's what that's what we had. So we had three callers,
so I thought the third caller had the Tuck rule.
So when I mentioned Don Denkinger, I did not realize,
(30:00):
so I was not trying to Iowa Sam it up.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Yeah, it's a there. There was a lot to get
wrong in that whole thing. But I do want to
say about the Don dinkinshre thing because we're talking nineteen
eighty five. Ron Reagan was in office a long time ago.
I remember it though, really well, and that speaks to
how old I am. It was the ninth inning, It
was one out in the ninth inning when that when
(30:24):
that happened, and the Cardinals had a one run lead
in the ninth and if they win, they won the
World Series. The Cardinals would have won in nineteen eighty
five if Don Denkinsher makes the right call. There was
no replay. In fact, I was surprised that Aaron Torres
brought up his example in twenty ten. There wasn't a replay.
So Baseball's real slow to this stuff.
Speaker 3 (30:46):
I'm gonna I'm gonna go to Isaac for an update,
but I also want Isaac's thoughts, quick thoughts on this.
Do you think because of how eighty six finished with
Buckner that eight, that this call in eighty five is
complete looked over because we have them in It's it's
not a call in the Mets Red Sox, but it
(31:07):
is the play. And so a year after what would
have been an atrocious call in a travesty that we
then instead talk about the Red Sox and the curse
and everything. I'm bringing it up because I obviously think
that it did that it did.
Speaker 9 (31:20):
That's a great question. There's a couple of factors that
play into it. The first is I suppose that happened
in a Game six and not in a game seven
as big as it was the next night. Not only
did the Royals win Game seven they wanted by a
final score of eleven to nothing, So I think that
that dissipated that a little bit. But absolutely what happened
(31:44):
the following year was so mega iconic because of the
whole circumstances of the Mets comeback and the air and
the fact that they did have to come from behind
again to win the World Series two days later in
Game seven. But all that, as dramatic as it was
on his own on its own, was magnified by the
(32:05):
two major market franchises, the Mets and the Red Sox,
one of the legacy franchises in sports, the Red Sox
having a chance to bust what was that at that point,
a sixty eight year curse. All those factors magnified it
to be much bigger than when it happened the year before,
when you had a legacy franchise on the Cardinals, but
(32:26):
relatively speaking to less major market cities in Kansas City
and Saint Louis.
Speaker 3 (32:32):
It's funny, We've had great college football national championship games,
and I still think that that one is remembered for
whatever reason, whether it be the call, whether it be
because it was the you at that time, because it
was Miami's winning streak, whatever. But you know some of
the Alabama Georgia National championship games, like you know the
you know the game winner to Hunter Renfro, Like I
(32:53):
think those sometimes get lost in the shuffle a little bit,
and this one is still remembered twenty three years later.
Speaker 5 (32:59):

up at Aaron Underscore Torres. You can find me Dan
Byer at Dan Byer on Fox. Jason Stewarts here, as
is Chris Purfett and Isaac Lohenkron. There's only one of
(33:31):
us here that can really give us the rankings that
we need. You may have heard about the Associated Press
Top twenty five, whether it be in college football, men's
and women's basketball. You don't need twenty five All you
need is ten, and you don't need the ap you
need the at top ten at in Top ten college
(33:52):
hoops pull goodbye twenty twenty five. Entering twenty twenty six,
Aaron Torres, The floor is yours, all right.
Speaker 2 (33:58):
Always tough because this time the year in balanced schedules.
You know, some teams challenge themselves. Some teams don't. So
let's start with number ten, b y you Cougar's. I
actually think they're closer to like a top five team,
but you look at the resume. Win over clems In,
lost in their biggest game of the year to Yukon.
I think they're better than the tenth best team of
the country, but I gotta stick them there number nine.
They're gonna be mad, they're fans Perdue. They're ranked much.
(34:21):
It's not that they're not good, but you look at
the resume. Best wins Auburn, best win Alabama doesn't look
look as good as it did in real time. Lost
to Iowa State at home. Perdue at number nine. Number
eight Houston, another team that I think is much better
than people really are much better than this ranking. Again,
you just look at the overall resume. Not a ton
of great wins. Did destroy Arkansas right before the Christmas break.
(34:44):
Number seven Michigan State, Michigan State Spartans. I was gonna
say Wolverines would have been controversial there credit tom Mezo
Man does it like the portal? Does it recruit one
and Dones just keeps on grinding out wins. Michigan State
at number seven, Number six Gonzagable. It's kind of crazy.
You can argue this was their best out of conference
run ever. They're currently twelve and one. They've actually already
(35:06):
played multiple league games, but a lot of quality wins
went to Vegas.
Speaker 1 (35:11):
Got a couple wins at the players here.
Speaker 2 (35:12):
Number five Duke Blue Devils a little bit on the
ropes right now, seven point lead against Georgia Tech at
home in their ACC opener. They lost their first game
of the season right before Christmas break. But Duke at
number five, number four. They are also playing right now
at halftime. Yukon up fifteen at Xavier. Yukon crazy thing.
(35:34):
Only have one loss one at Kansas beat BYU. They
haven't had their full compliment of guys until about the
last ten days or so. I have Yukon at number four,
then at number the top three are the same as
the AP. I generally don't like those guys, but they
got it right. I have a slightly different order. Iowa
stayed at number three. You could argue maybe the best
winning college basketball at Macy Arena against Purdue. I actually
(35:58):
have Arizona at number two. They are number one in
the AP. They probably have the best win against Yukon
at Gamble Pavilion, best resume overall, but number one. I
gotta go Michigan Wolverines. It's not just about Kyle Whittingham
and inn Arbor right now. Maybe because Michigan is destroying
every one. I think they have something like six point
(36:19):
wins by forty or more points. I have the Michigan
Wolverines at number one. There it is your at top ten.

he shoots a three. That's good. He made it with
one point seven Togo j Xco with the biggest shot
of his rookie season, puts the Sixers up by three.
Speaker 3 (36:58):
That was our tire A play of the day VJ
Edgecum rookie out of Baylor. Yeah, big bucket last week
week for the Philadelphia seventy six ers in what was
a highly contested game, John Morant forty points, had like
three assists. Like it was like, you take to him
and Tyree Maxey's box scoring. You look at both of them,
both big parts of the game. But these three assists
(37:21):
from John Morant, that's a that's a little toughs a
little tough one to go on. He is aeron Torres.
