You're listening to KFI Am six fortythe Bill Handles show on demand on the
iHeartRadio app Steve Gregory brand New Show, another one, Steve, Good morning,
Good morning Bill. All Right,we've been talking about this for a
while. I remember I remember whenyou first it was shingling around in your
head as you were putting this together. I remember that, Hey, I'm

(00:23):
thinking of this and it's sort ofpercolated with you. And here it is
Studio six forty, So let's talkabout it. What's going on with Yeah,
Well, the original idea I pitchedRobin, our program director, about
twelve years ago, and initially Iwanted to do something to sort of build

(00:43):
a build up a farm team orat least some you know, a conduit
between the journalism schools in the KFInews department. That was the initial plan,
and Chris Little was on board, you know, the news director.
We were going great guns, andRobin's like, we don't really have any
room for it right now, so, you know, we put it on
the shelf. And then she approachedme a few months ago and she said,
hey, I need something for Sundayafternoons because they've been replaying Unsolved episodes

(01:06):
in some of our documentaries and Isaid, well, and then she says,
I seem to remember one that hadstudents, and I told her about
it again and she said, yeah, let's do that. How fast can
you get it on? I wasis like, well, it's going to
take a little time. I mean, because we have to do, you
know, outreach to all the differentcolleges, and we had to come up
with the criteria. We had tobasically create an infrastructure for a show that

(01:30):
didn't exist. All right, SoI explain what it is Studio six forty.
Imagine this. Imagine sort of thelaid back vibe of Real Time with
Bill Maher, the old school charmof the McLaughlin group for those of you
that remember, and the credibility ofMeet the Press, and you mash that
all up and make it a panelwith college drones and students. And that's

(01:53):
Studio six forty. Every week willbe three different panelists or will rotate them
around. They're all different universities andcolleges, including community colleges, public private
universities, and they have to beenrolled in either of the journalism course,
communications, broadcasting, digital media, something in the communications world. And they

(02:14):
have to be attached to one ofthe like the school paper, the school
radio or TV station, or schoolpodcast, and then they go through this
very rigorous betting process. I mean, we started out with nearly twenty one
applicants and we paired it down toeleven that are now on our official roster
to get started with. And thenwhen school starts officially next month, we're

(02:35):
anticipating that number to grow. Sooh, sure we'll give them. We'll
give them three topics, Like wesent out our topics yesterday for today's taping,
and we have the three top storiesthat we're going to discuss. But
the unique thing is is we're goingto discuss it through the lens of a
student journalist. Ah. Now,I'm assuming you're the moderator. Yes,
I'll be the traffic top all right, and you're gonna be throwing these questions

(02:58):
out and it runs what a coupleof Yeah, it'll be to Our show
runs from two pm to four pmon Sunday afternoons starting this Sunday, and
then on the podcast side, youknow, it'll be available for on demand.
But then there'll be a special studiosix forty plus and that's going to
be a podcast only segment in whichthe students bring topics that are not on

(03:20):
the radio side, but they're goingto bring topics of interest or concern specifically
from their campuses and from their demographicand we'll discuss those in the podcast version
and that'll be posted alongside the radioversion. That sounds exciting, and it
does. I'm not blowing smoke here, but it is. It's you know,
I'm looking at what we do onthis station and on what's happening in

(03:46):
the world of podcasts, and itis either reinventing it or dying. That's
where we have to go. Andit's kind of nice. That's how you
brought Unsolved into the mix, andyou brought something that had not been done
before here in Southern California. Andnow you've got a studio six forty and
you're now let me ask you whenyou vet these students, typically, what

(04:13):
are the questions you're going to ask? We only have a minute, but
yeah, yeah, first thing.First, they'll submit a resume, Then
they submit a sixty second video oraudio clip of why they think they should
be a panelist. Then we lookat that. Then if it warrants to
the next level, then we callfor a Zoom interview, and then I
go to the Zoom interview, andthen I ask them a little bit about
their goals, the work they've done. Okay in some scenarios, how would

(04:35):
they cover it? Are they okaywith you know, debating issue with students
from other colleges, that kind ofthing. That makes sense? All right,
I'm looking forward to it, andI maybe I'll do the same thing
with the handle on the Law whereI vet the people calling in, except
I want people particularly stupid, unintelligiblesitting with some kind of metal facility.

(05:00):
You know what I should actually fillin for you. I'm no, I
don't think the students are ready forthat. Marginal read Yeah, marginal journalistic
advice. Yeah, I'm still tryingto get on The Jesus Show and do
uh does a fill in marginal spiritualadvice? And uh, they're saying no,

(05:20):
never. Let you've listened to TheJesus Show, right, of course
you have. I used to bean anchor and I would fill in sometimes
on that and listen to it.But I will tell you this that I
had tapped some of our other hostsand talent and some local TV talent to
be a guest hosts, and soif you want to be among those,
let me know. Okay, allright, Steve will catch you on.

(05:40):
We're still doing Saturdays, right andI know we're not doing nine. Yeah,
you had to put that. Wehad to put new season on the
hole for a little bit until wegot this one off the okay, enough
to go? All right, sothat Studio six forty coming up Sunday from
but two to four. I alreadyforgot. See if it's not written,

(06:00):
I don't say it. There yougo, just call me Joe Biden.
All right, Steve, take care. Thank you. Coming up Neil Savedra
and we talk about hold on,let me read this one too. Food.
We talk about food because it's letme look at that Foody Friday.
You're listening to Bill Handle on demandfrom KFI AM six forty Foody Friday morning,

(06:27):
which means that it is Friday andwe talk about food. There you
go again, Neil on Bill, great analysis and thank you for pointing that
out. And so we're here foralways an honor to listen to you,
sir, Yes, and Foody Friday. Neil as the host of his show
The Fork Report every Saturday. That'stomorrow from two to five. Handle on

(06:53):
the law eight to eleven. Ihave to do my own plug. And
we just have a great time.We had a lunch on a regular basis.
You know, we should actual videothat and put that on either Facebook,
just us eating lunch, because thatis entertainment on a level that is
extraordinary. Yeah, maybe national geographicyew, something along those lines. Okay,

(07:15):
Now here's a question that I wantto ask you, and that's McDonald's
is launching a new McNugget, dippingsauce and mcflurry. And this happens occasionally,
but it used to be occasionally. Is every fast food outlet at every
moment launching something where there is nosuch thing as a timeline where the menu

(07:43):
is the menu right now? Yeah, they're just they're doing anything to keep
the attention of the consumer on themin a positive way because there has been
a lot of negative sentiment towards fastfood because of price and you know,
skyrocketing, and so people are kindof in a slump with fast food and

(08:07):
they're going to sit down chains orother restaurants to get standard fast food fair
whether it's burgers, fries and ashake and so McDonald's and every other fast
food outlet has to show that they'redoing something different. In this particular case,
trying to stay you'veful, You've gotcollaborations with an anime series which I'm

(08:31):
not familiar with. But there's thissauce. It's called Special Grade Garlic Sauce
and it's sold with ten piece chickenMcNuggets exclusively through the McDonald's app. That's
another thing. As people, theywant to be a part of your life,
and the best way to do thatis through these apps because they give
you special discounts, They tell youwhen new things are coming out, whether

(08:56):
it's merch or whether it's food. And in this particular case, they're using
this adaptation of a black garlic sauce. I don't know if you've ever had
black garlic, but it's wonderful. It's wonderful in small amounts, very intense,
and this garlic sauce comes from aMcDonald's in Japan. It's got garlic

(09:16):
soy sauce, kind of tangy,a little bit of sweetness there, and
they're going to be bringing this throughyou know, limited time. Now,
can you just buy the garlic saucebecause i'd go and get There are some
great you know, chicken tenderloins andchicken nuggets from restaurants that, for example,

(09:39):
have real chicken, not some sortof composite ye know, it's sort
of sort of artificial extruded you knowchicken bits. Well, you know what
a lot of people don't know this, and it freaks them out when I
tell them. But there's only aboutfive different shapes. If you look at
a McDonald's you get twenty nuggets, there will be like two of this.

(10:03):
There's like two of each shape. There's not or four in the case of
twenty, but they're they're pressed andcut into the same shape. So there's
like a handful of shapes that theyrotate. It's like pavers, and so
you look at them. When youlook at them next time, notice you
will have certain shapes that are McDonald's, whereas other places might just have a

(10:26):
nugget shape. They have like fouror five different nugget shapes. Do they
themselves? Do they occasionally put inlittle bits of feather so you think it's
real chicken. No, not onpurpose that I'm aware of. I don't
know. I do like myself someMcDonald's, and I do enjoy, especially
when they're fresh and hot. They'renuggies. The other big one right now,

(10:48):
especially with the heat handle and everyyou know, the temperatures keep rising,
is their new Kitcat Banana split mcflurry. Now, if you've been recently,
you've probably had their cookies and withthe oreos smashed up in there,
this one has broken up kit Kat. It's got bits of banana and I
haven't tried it yet, but I'mtold that the banana it has both banana

(11:11):
and some strawberries in it, andthey're dried like freeze dried fish. But
it is a strawberry and vanilla icecream with these in it. And I've
heard that it's really Yeah, itsounds it sounds great. It does.
But when I look at the marketing, and then we're gonna take a break

(11:33):
and go on to a few othertopics. But when you look at particularly
in the fast food world, moreso than any other place that I can
think of, is they have toget you on an email. They have
to get your email address because thatis the premiere marketing tool that they use,
because that's super targeted, and theyhave to get you in the store

(11:56):
so you have the promos you havethe as you said, you have the
discounts, you get early information whateverit is. And you know, do
they have like a McDonald's club.I have no idea that they everything.
When you're in the app, youhave perks and club like perks that you
wouldn't get up. So you can'tdo it today without the app or and

(12:20):
I'm gonna throw three things at youwithout reducing prices because everybody is so price
conscious, so you have to haveone or two quote dollar meals to get
you in the store. And theother thing are new items that have to
be coming out absolutely regularly, likethe shake that you just described. Do

(12:41):
you have all three to run anykind of a fast food establishment today?
Right now? That seems to bethe key to get attention. McDonald's also
just had a little and it's goingon a limited time offer that includes the
return of their smoky BLT quarter pounderwith cheese, which came back just a
couple of days ago. And that'sa big deal. So you've constantly got

(13:03):
to be stirring up new interest becausethen it reminds people, oh, gosh,
I do miss their quarter pound oryou know what, maybe I'll just
go buy for some fries or maybea shake, and re engages people to
go back to the fast food locationsthat they've known and loved since they were
a kid. Yeah. I willnot give my email to anyone personal email,

(13:26):
particularly business establishments. And I goon apps or I go on Google
to find out information. I wantto know a shirt company, for example,
that I went on to another Hawaiianshirt company because you know I am
with Hawaiian shirts. And they won'tgive you any information until you put in
your email address. And you justrefuse to put on bill as I won't

(13:52):
do it because you can do andI won't do it because you get five
email blasts a day from these people. Well then you bake. You go
to Jack, I've got whatever, fake one. I'm gonna make one that
you know you're about, and youput that in there. Yeah that's true.
That's true, except once in awhile, I want the information.
The problem is they don't know one. I want it once in a while.

(14:13):
Put John Copeltz in there. Ohgood, point, Oh good,
everybody love that. I'm gonna signup for about nineteen of them after we
finished the show, and then that'sjust today at Oh yeah, you'll be
fine, there's plenty. All right, we're gonna come back. We have
a little modified show today in termsof time. We're gonna come back with

(14:33):
more of Neil and Foody Friday, and then I'm gonna do one segment of
the World in Review. You're listeningto Bill Handle on demand from KFI Am
six forty as we end the show. No, I got one more segment
to do when I come back, and that's gonna be a World in Review,
which I usually do twice, twosegments. But we've sort of modified

(14:54):
today with the time, and Ibet it's gonna be great, sir.
We're all looking forward to it.Mister Handle. Oh yeah, thank you
very much. That's the new rulehere as we modify. I need both
Amy and Neil to kiss my assin a major way. I can't wait
for it. Bill. Yeah, they want see these people. This is
to the listener. See these twowhat their jobs? And you know what

(15:20):
can I tell you? You know, I hate to tell this to you,
sir. This isn't a job.I love it so much. I
don't work a day in my life. Very strong. All right, Footy
Friday, Neil and I get togetherregularly to eat and we're doing exactly that
on Sunday with some very high endfood. Usually Neil and I go to

(15:41):
the lowest common denominator, and thisSunday we're going to the Anaheim White House
and inviting you to join us BastileDay the French July fourth. It's an
all French menu and it's going tobe fund Neil. I'm going there.
My daughter and her fiance are goingthere, and you can thank Brandon for
taking her off my hands. Thatwill be terrific. And it's gonna be

(16:04):
all French fair and it's gonna beit's gonna be fun. And now it's
not inexpensive ninety five bucks ahead, but it's very high end food. Go
to Anaheim white House dot com Anaheimwhite House dot com. All right,
let's finish it up, Neil. And here's one that I absolutely love when
I saw this. There is aright way and a wrong way to snack?

(16:26):
Does that mean you don't use bothhands in two bags of chips and
eat? Is that the wrong wayto do it? I always love these
stories because who wants to learn, you know, who doesn't want to learn
proper food etiquette from the fat guywho obviously has a problem with eating.
It's like I'm the one that shouldtell you how to snack. But there

(16:48):
is science to this, and asAmericans, we tend to snack differently than
others. I had some friends inrecently from Italy and when we visited them
and then watching them visit here, the way they eat is different. The
way they even snack. Sometimes you'lleat some little you'll nash on these little
things before you even go out todinner. But everything is timed properly,

(17:11):
so sciences. The science here isthat timing and finding patterns better patterns for
snacking can be beneficial. One isplan your snack times. You if you
don't plan them, you tend tojust do it all day or just grab
and that kind of urge. Ihave an urge to eat. I want

(17:33):
to eat, so I'm going todo it now. The second thing is
so if you have planned a timethat this is when I'm gonna do my
snack, and then you're putting itbetween meals, it's going to be more
beneficial. Also, the combination youwant to have carbs, you want to
have protein and fat, but youwant to mix them up a little bit,

(17:53):
have a little bit of each soone doesn't become the dominant thing like
we normally do, which is justgo to carved salt. Yeah, Neil,
you know, I understand what you'resaying, But who in God's name
would do that, particularly in America. I mean that's you know, for
example, you go to a storein Italy, right, and I mean

(18:15):
they have a potato chip section andit's four or five different potato chips.
Here in the States it's two aislesof potato chip chips. Ye, we
just do it differently, and that'swhy we're incredibly fat and they're not.
But also think the protein's gonna bekey here. If you if you go

(18:36):
get a bag of potato chips, you can go through the entire bag of
potato chips. But if it wasburnt ends for instance, it's a steak,
you can't. You can only gothrough so much. There's a challenge
that they used to do in collegeswhere they would challenge someone to drink an
entire gallon of milk. But milkis filled with so much protein the body

(18:56):
sees it as food and not liquidwater. I wouldn't do either of these
things. Can You couldn't do itoverdo it with water as well. But
water you could you process differently thanyou do milk because it's protein, same
with any other protein. So ifyou have more protein like hummus or peanut
butter on your cucumber stick or whateveryou're doing, that is going to process

(19:19):
different in your body and it's goingto fill you up. The last tip
bill, and this is a hugeone, and there's really two. Don't
don't eat it. You know, the nighttime snacking is bad. That's one
we all know. The other oneis try water first. Oftentimes we think
are hunger, the hunger pains thatwe're getting are for food, and oftentimes,

(19:41):
especially when it's hot out like this, it's that we're thirsty, not
hungry. Okay, so try waterfirst. France, for example, we're
gonna have French food at the AnaheimWhite House, but in France, for
example, you go and get it. You know, you buy a pack
of biscuits, and the most popularones are the sea biscuit biscuits. I
had a horse food joke. Yeah, pretty much, Yeah, seabiscuit.

(20:03):
They don't do that anymore, dothey. Oh yeah. One of the
greatest race horses in history was seabiscuit. I get. I get the
joke. Okay, thank you.I'm running alongside as they say, I'm
saying, do they still serve horse? I think they do. I still
think they serve I still think thatthey serve horse. Matter of fact,
at the Anaheim White House this night, No, no, no, we

(20:26):
are having frog legs though. Yeah. Yeah, if you want, you
got your choice frog legs or salmonfume or salmon ores cargo, which you
know is there. You got choicesof everything, and it's gonna be fun.
Okay, that's it, We're done. Coming up, I'm gonna finish
the show with do They Well NoWorld in Review, where I go through

(20:48):
and I'm only to do one segment, so I'm going to hit on some
of the highlights of what happened thisweek and that'll end it for us.
So do not go away. You'relistening to Bill Handle on demand from KFI
AM six forty. We end theshow on a Friday with the World in
Review, and since I'm only doingone segment, we had to introduce Steve

(21:15):
Gregory's new show, and that's Studiosix forty and that's this Sunday from what
two to four, and that's goingto be worth listening to. So I'm
going to do one segment of theWorld in Review. And the big news
was Joe Biden yesterday after the NATOsummit and his political career was literally at

(21:37):
risk, and it was going tobe the press conference, and he got
a c didn't destroy it, didn'tdo himself any favors, still a bunch
of gaffes, and still came upwith a good analysis of the world foreign
relations. But that's his Bailey Wickanyway. He was forty years in the

(21:59):
Senate and a special he was InternationalAffairs at the same time. Until yesterday,
Democrats were calling for his ouster fromthe ticket, saying you gotta leave.
George Clooney joined that crowd. AndClooney is a big, big political
big wig. Not only does hedonate tons of money, he raises tons

(22:22):
of tons of money, and hehas a lot to say. So we're
going to see We've seen a fewmore congress people and a couple of Senators
say you're gone. We're talking aboutDemocrats now, we're not talking about Republicans.
We're talking about his allies. TheAlec Baldwin trial has started this week.
I still don't understand why he isbeing tried for involuntary manslaughter. The

(22:44):
prosecution is saying that he took agun and he aimed it at Helena.
Helenamus God that I just forget hername. There you go, another Joe
Biden moment. I don't even havesenior hutchins. I don't even have senior
moments anymore. I have moments, and we'll see. I mean, as
far as I saw, he aimedthe gun at the camera and she was

(23:06):
behind it, and they're arguing effectively, he should have known. He should
have known, even though he wastold that the gun had no ambient or
live ammunition, and he should haveknown. Can you imagine if a producer
and actor is now held responsible foranything that happens on a set. The
heat deaths, we've gotten a fewof them. I mean, this has
been a heat spell across the countrythat has been brutal. Records just broken

(23:33):
like crazy. What one hundred andeighteen in Las Vegas Palm Springs had over
one hundred and twenty. I meanwe're talking just death defying temperatures, I
mean dangerous, dangerous stuff. AndHurricane Barrel, the first major hurricane Category
four came into the United States hitthe Gulf of the Texas Gulf Coast and

(23:56):
brought in Well, the rains haven'tstopped some of the cities along the coast,
like near Galbuston fifteen inches of rainand a storm surge of seven feet.
I mean that is catastrophic. Andthen Beryl now became a tropical storm
and then just became a rainstorm. Is swept up through the Midwest and is
in the up in the the northeast. The fun part is you've heard of

(24:22):
Sunny Williams or Barry Butch Wilmare,Wilmore. You haven't heard of them,
but you will because they were theNASA astronauts that went up to the Space
Shuttle on that Boeing star Liner. And you remember there's been a little delay
because there was some issues of themcoming back. They were only supposed to
say a few days now their secondmonth, and Boeing just issued its statement

(24:45):
that we expect the astronauts to comeback to Earth. Never does never work
for you, because never works forus. I guess it would be a
kind of a conversation like Itay,he always wanted to be an astrona.
Have you ever thought about being asatellite? Yeah? Pretty much all right,
we're done, guys. Quick wordabout the podcast. The Bill Handle

(25:07):
podcast is now up. It's onlyon the iHeartRadio app and it's The Bill
Handle Show Podcast. Two episodes areup and we'll see how that goes.
It's my first foray into the worldof podcasting, and it's kind of fun.
I don't have segments like we doon this show, and I can
say things that I can't hear, and I can dive into topics a little

(25:30):
deeper, so it's a lot offun. You've been listening to The Bill
Handle Show. Catch my show Mondaythrough Friday, six am to nine am,
and anytime on demand on the iHeartRadioapp.
