Former UK nurse Lucy Letby has been found guilty of trying to murder another newborn baby.

It adds to convictions last year that made her the United Kingdom's most prolific serial killer of modern times.

The 34-year-old was found guilty last August of murdering seven babies and trying to kill six more while working at a Chester Hospital.

She went on trial last month for a second time for the attempted murder of a baby girl after the original jury failed to reach a verdict.

UK Correspondent Gavin Grey told Mike Hosking that when the verdict was read the parents gasped while Letby showed no emotion in the dock.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
But you get the Graham morning mate. Why am I
there's Litby? I mean just I mean I assume people remember.
But she was convicted several times over of killing babies
and attempted murders as well. So we've got yet another trial.
This one was a retrial, right.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
That's right. Yes, name Lucy Letby might not mean much,
but the former nurse is the UK's most prolific child
killer and indeed she was found guilty back in August
of by a different jury of seven babies and the
attempted murder of six others at a hospital in Chester
in northwest England in one year period between twenty fifteen

(00:35):
and twenty sixteen. But at that trial there was also
the case of an allegation relating to a baby simply
known as Baby K of only premature baby, and the
jury said they couldn't reach a verdict, so a retrial
was ordered. That has concluded today and she's been found
guilty of that murder as well. When the jury foreman
read out the guilty verdict, the parents there of little

(00:57):
Baby K gasped and let be sh no emotion in
the dock. Part of the evidence was by a consultant
pediatrician who said that he caught a virtually quote red
handed as he entered the unit's intensive care room very
early in the morning. He said that he didn't intervene
to resuscipate the child when the blood oxygen levels were

(01:17):
dropping very, very rapidly. He said he'd seen no evidence
that lucy Letbey had done anything to help the baby,
and indeed, lucy let Be was accused of basically fiddling
with the tube that was keeping that baby alive in.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
Order to kill unreal. So then we got this bloke
on the yacht having a party and the next thing,
you know, Greece is alight? Is that how it worked?

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yes, yes, pretty much, so are the allegations. So there
was a luxury yacht moored off an island in Greece,
and the Greek islands really currently suffering from a terrific
heat wave, very very early for this time of year,
and the luxury yacht, it appears, was full of Kazakhstan's
richest people, and one of them was said to be

(02:02):
in charge of the yacht. When they decided to have
a fireworks display, the fireworks display stepped far to an island.
Nobody was killed or injured, but it did cause extensive
damage to a beautiful island south of Athens called Hydra.
And so now the crew are being prosecuted, and indeed
those eight Kazakh nationals on board are being prosecuted for

(02:26):
complicity to Arsen by the Greek authorities. And suffice to
say that although the crew are receiving the sharp end
of this, there is plenty of interest in the allegations
against one of Kazakhstan's richest ment Dania Albergazin. He's a
major figure in the petroleum industry, a fortune estimated at

(02:46):
almost seven hundred million New Zealand dollars, and he says, look,
you know, I have absolutely no idea of this at all.
There's certainly not anything to do with me. But obviously
plenty of Greeks really upset about luxury yachts, just in
the thinking that they rule the world, as it were,
when they're mooring off these islands.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
