A US poll finds the attempted assassination of Donald Trump has had little impact on voting intention.

A Reuters poll by Ipsos shows of around 1200 voters, 43% are in favour of the Republicans and 41% intend to support the Democrats.

Of all voters, 80% agreed the country was spiralling out of control.

US correspondent Mitch McCann told Ryan Bridge prominent Democrat Adam Schiff has written a letter asking Joe Biden to step down.

He says while the assassination attempt may have taken the spotlight off Biden, the issue of Democrats wanting him to step down isn't going anywhere.

On the other side of the divide, Republican vice president hopeful JD Vance is set to deliver his first speech to party faithful.

The Republican National Convention continues in Wisconsin after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump over the weekend.

McCann told Bridge the theme of the convention tonight is Make America Strong Again, with a focus on foreign policy and border security.

He says it follows last night's theme —Make America Safe Again— with a heavy emphasis on migrant crime.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
Big day for JD. Vance, the Trump's pick for vice
president as running mate for the campaign, Mitch mccannon's stateside
for US Mitch, Good morning, big day for him. His
first speech as the nominee.

Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, good afternoon, Ryan, from the US where there is
a new election drama. It seems every single hour of
the last week. Jade Vance is going to be at
the convention tonight. He's going to take center stage with
that speech. And he was named as the VP pick
only two days after Donald Trump was almost assassinated by
that gunman in Pennsylvania. Tonight provides an opportunity for many

(00:34):
in the country to find out what Vance is all about.
He grew up poor in the Appalachians in southwest Ohio.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
He ended up going to the Yale Law School.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
He served in the military, He wrote a New York
Times best selling memoir which was turned into a movie,
and became a US senator. So tonight he's going to
introduce himself to the country and the theme of the
convention tonight, Ryan is make America Strong Again. It will
focus on foreign policy and order security.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
It follows last.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Night's theme, which was make America Safe Again, with a
heavy emphasis on migrant crime.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Right, Let's go to the other side. Now, Joe Biden's
in Nevada.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Yes he is. He's speaking trying to court Latino voters today.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
And let's start with a new pole that's come out
in just the last couple of hours showing how much
trouble Joe Biden is in with his own party. The
Associated Press poll found that nearly two thirds of Democrats
say Joe Biden should withdraw from the presidential race and
let his party nominate a different candidate. It also found
only three and ten Democrats now are extremely or very

(01:36):
confident he has the mental capacity to serve as president.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
So that's about thirty percent. Not good for Joe Biden.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
And we've also found out in the last hour Adam Schiff,
a prominent Democrat from California, has written a letter asking
for Joe Biden to step down. So while that assassination news,
our attended assassination news, may have taken the spotlight of
Joe Biden, it seems the issue of Democrats wanting to
step down is not going anywhere.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Yeah, I think Biden was hoping that that would take
the focus the spotlight off it and he could just
sneak on in there, but that may be wishful thinking. Mitch.
Thank you for that. Mitch McCann with US, a US correspondent.
