Joe Biden has welcomed Donald Trump back to the White House in a meeting in the oval office.

It's a traditional courtesy that the outgoing president welcomes the incoming president, a courtesy Trump didn’t afford Biden in 2020 after his loss.

Today, the pair both spoke about a smooth transition of power.

US correspondent Mitch McCann told Ryan Bridge there were a lot of smiles and handshakes.

He says it was a little unexpected, seeing as they usually seem to despise each other.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
So incoming President elect Donald Trump has met with Biden
at the White House in the Oval Office fireside, and
boy Mitch McCann is with us. That fire was absolutely cranking.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yes, I know what is freezing over here, Ryan, It
looked like a beautiful morning in the White House for
an awkward conversation. I think we've all had awkward meetings
in our life, but perhaps not as awkward as we
expected that one to be between Joe Biden and Donald Trump,
although it seems on the surface of it they were
happy families. Joe Biden said to Donald Trump, well, mister

(00:33):
President elect, former President Donald congratulations, and he said, welcome
back to the White House, and Donald Trump responded, politics
is tough in many cases, not a very nice world.
But it is a nice world today and I appreciate
it very much. So a lot of smiles and a
lot of handshakes between Donald Trump and Joe Biden, perhaps
a little bit unexpected, Ryan, seeing it seems like they

(00:56):
despise each other usually.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
Yeah, it was a little weird, a little and I
did wonder whether they'd put this. I counted seven logs
on that fire. I hate to keep going on about
it was that like a metaphor for democracy burning. You know,
it's possible.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
I didn't even know it was a real fire, but
it looked very nice. I'd rather be there this.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Morning, cranking. Let's talk about aviation suspending flights they have
out of the US to Haiti.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, that's right. America's aviation regulator, that is, the FAA,
has suspended flights to Haiti for thirty days now. That
country has been embroiled in chaos for some time now.
It's estimated by the UN that more than three thousand,
six hundred people have been killed in Haiti since January. Essentially,
the problem is it has been overrun by gangs at

(01:39):
the moment. But three American aircraft, Jet Blue, Spirit and
American Airlines were all hit by bullets on Monday after
flying to the capital, portou Prince. So the FAA has
now said for thirty days, no American flights are going
to Gobia.

Speaker 1 (01:54):
All right, Mitch, thank you very much for that much.
Mccinl live from New York. Just so that you know,
Jimmy Carter apparently grew up around wood burning systems throughout
his childhood, so when he got to the White House,
he installed six wooden stoves wood stoves around the building,
so there you go. They're still in operation today, apparently.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
