The US President's received praise for his involvement in a fragile ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

Both sides are claiming the other has breached the truce.

Donald Trump scolded both for early violations but directed particularly stinging criticism at Israel over the scale of its strikes.

US columnist Henry Olsen told Ryan Bridge it's a win for Trump, but earlier US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities may only have short term effects.

He says if the nuclear programmes only been kicked into low gear, the next president will have a difficult decision to make.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
So the ceasefire that Trump declared decreed is currently holding,
but was broken for a moment while we slept last
night and lead to this outburst from Donald Trump.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm not happy with Israel.

Speaker 1 (00:12):
I'm not happy with the run either.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
We have two countries that have been fighting so long
and so hard that they don't know what the they're doing.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
So since then Nitya, who was sending warplanes, they've been
turned around. There were a few bombs dropped, but it
seems that they've come back from the brink. So as
Trump is about to step out of Air Force one
at Amsterdam Airport and go to NATO, can he does
he have the wind at his back? So to speak.
Henry Olsen is a columnist in the United States and

(00:43):
it's with us this morning. Henry, Welcome to the show.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Thank you for having me on.

Speaker 1 (00:48):
How how do Americans feel about Trump getting involved? You know,
are they paying attention to this in the way that
the rest of the world is.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
He's paying a lot of attention to it. You know.
The whole suggests that the people who didn't like Trump
coming in don't approve of his action with respect to Iran,
but his base does, and his party does. The fact
is that Republicans and people who voted for him overwhelmingly
support him, and that's really what he needs. He also
has a lot of understanding and praise for at least

(01:20):
brokering a ceasefire and for ending what every administration going
back thirty years has said is an unacceptable threat that
Iran holds nuclear weapons.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
If you, i suppose, if you can come away with
sitting the nuclear program back a couple of years, if
you can come away with Israel feeling about themselves and
with no further US involvement in the region, then that
is a massive win for US president, right.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
It would be a massive When the question, though, is
if all you do is kick the program back a
couple of years, then you still have a question that
it's unacceptable to the United States that Iran because that's
a nuclear weapon. If all you do is kick the
nuclear program into low gear, then the next president is
going to have to make a difficult decision as to

(02:10):
what to do, and may have to make the same
decision the President Trump did. But at the at least
in the medium in short term, this appears to be
a huge win both the United States and for the
President Hey.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Henry, big heat wave heading the States. At the moment
I was looking in New York, it was felt like
forty one degrees celsius to us.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Very hot for you guys. Very and it's a primary
election day for the New York Democratic mayoral primary. We'll
see whether or not people decide to stay home rather
than go out in such a heat, hot and humid weather.

Speaker 1 (02:44):
Yeah, it'd be interesting to see what happens with Kumo
having a second bite of the cherry. Eight minutes away
