An iwi leader says fractures within Te Pāti Māori are unhelpful for Māori political goals.

Te Pāti Māori's National Council has opted to expel Mariameno Kapa-Kingi and Takuta Ferris from the party.

Both have labelled the expulsion unconstitutional and will sit as Independent MPs for now.

Te Rūnanga O Toa Rangatira Chief Executive Helmut Modlik told Ryan Bridge this is distracting for more important issues.

He says there needs to be a focus on getting this current Government out because of its harmful policies toward Māori.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
To Party Mardi is imploding. It'll be no surprise to
you given what's happened over the last month.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
This decision was not taken lightly. Many hope the end
would be reconciliation. It could not be achieved. We acknowledge
the mummy our people have built, and we think our
National Council for upholding our color and the best interest
of our movement throughout.

Speaker 1 (00:23):
Helmet Modlick is well by the way Ferris and Kapa
King now become independents and they say that they will
fight this. We'll see where that goes. Helmet Modlik is
nate toi ewchief executive with me this morning. Good morning Mardena,
good to have you on the show. What is your
I mean, obviously it's not a great look for to
Party Mahdi, But what happens with the Maldi electric vote

(00:44):
now do you think?

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, well, it will depend on what plays out over
the next probably the next six months or so. It's
to state how bitterly disappointing it is for the married
community to see the dynamic that's played out so publicly
and resulting in this fractious outcome. Yeah, hard to overstate it.

Speaker 1 (01:05):
Do you know what exactly. You know, some of that
Ferris and couple King have actually done.

Speaker 3 (01:12):
Well. I think it's fair to say that the actions
and conversations that have gone on initially behind the scenes
and then more recently in all two public ways, online
as well as over the media, has really been a
combination of small and not so small actions that have

(01:32):
just irritated each got thought about it. It seems to
be pretty orthodox sort of personality power politics type actions
are common. Well, that's always you're going to have a
serious ego if you're going to be in politics, and
it's it seems to parallel pretty similarly the sorts of

(01:54):
things we should play out in other parties at this
At this stage though, in the electoral cycle and give
and the strategic issues and play for to party MALDI
and the progressive side of the political spectrum, it's it's
serious helmet.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Does Labor win out of this? You know, do we
get Maori voters on the Maori role going back to Labor.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
That's that's clearly got to be one of strategic options.
That's why I say it depends on what plays out
over the sixty nine months. The you know, the there's
no point winning a battle if you lose the war,
and the war at this point in time is seen
the Coalition and it's egregious attacks on the Murray community

(02:39):
and over the last couple of years seeing them removed
from office. That's the war and this this battle that's
playing out into party Mali has has been decidedly unhelpful
and winning that battle, that war.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
