Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, joining us right now courtesy i bet online
(00:02):
dot Net. I want to get this guy's take on
the UW Michigan game tomorrow and many, many, many other
college football topics.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Our friend Danny Kanell. Danny, how are you, man?
Speaker 3 (00:11):
What's up, fellas? What's going on? Yeah? Good?
Speaker 4 (00:14):
It is awesome to be on. I don't know what
the weather is like with you guys out there, but
I was in I live in South Florida and it's
still like ninety and hot every day. But I actually
I was in New York City doing some TV work
and it was nice fall, crisp weather, and it felt awesome.
So it's great October, like it's officially here. Like I
(00:35):
love October. So I'm fired up to be hones with
you guys.
Speaker 5 (00:37):
Tomorrow is supposed to be good. Today was not good.
Tomorrow is supposed to be good.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
Nice.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
Today is Today's great? Now is suck for your golf
game this morning? But now it's awesome. My wan got
watered and now tomorrow is going to be great. But
we're not having you on to talk about the weather, Danny.
For God's sakes, we got you on to talk about
a lot of things around college football, including Washington Michigan tomorrow.
Both teams are totally different, new rosters, new head coaches.
(01:04):
Everything has changed in the last nine months since these
two teams have played. Michigan looks very beatable, and apparently
Vegas agrees because the Huskies are favored tomorrow. What do
you think is going to go down at Husky Stadium
at four thirty tomorrow between the Dogs and the Wolverines.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
You guys are gonna get a steady dose of smashmouth
football coming your way. I mean this, Michigan's offense is
setting back offensive football about seventy five years. And this
is not by design. They would like to have a
more balance attack light they had last year. But really
what's happened is they pretty much mishandled their quarterback situation
(01:44):
because they did not go to the portal. They did
not bring in any big name, you know, through the
portal come in there potentially be a starter. They thought
Alex Orgie was going to be their guy, but then
all of a sudden he struggles throwing the football and
they're like, oh, oh, we have a problem. So then
they make the right before the seven, they go to
Davis Warren, who is like a great story, but he's
(02:05):
still a walk on and he has, you know, can't
keep from throwing it to the other team. And so
they go back to alex Orgy and basically what they
have is a wildcat quarterback. You know, like when teams
run the wildcat, it's usually an athletic running back or
receiver and there's no quarterback he is. That's essentially what
they're running. They're not gonna throw it probably more than
(02:27):
twelve or thirteen times. So if you're Washington, it's great
news because you know exactly what they're gonna do. Yes,
you have to be prepared for a couple of big
plays over the top, but they just they're just gonna
try to cram it down Washington's defense throat, which if
they've always been really good at that, and I know
that's what they did last year, but they had a
passing attack. You had to respect this one. You really don't.
(02:49):
Minnesota last week loaded up the box when Michigan tried
to throw it, alex.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Orgy got into trouble.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
He had a really bad interception that kept Minnesota in
the game and almost potentially lost the game from Michigan.
So they are very, very gettable the question is in
that smash mouth game, how does Washington's defense hold up?
And I think they'll hold up pretty well.
Speaker 5 (03:09):
I thought they held up pretty well against Kyleamanungai last
Friday night against Rutgers. He didn't go off against against Washington.
What did you make of the Huskies in that game?
I mean, out gaining Rutgers by over two hundred yards,
just totally dominating the stat sheet, but did not dominate
the brain game. They had a lot of brain farts
in that game. And discipline issues, yes, And I.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
Think that's a that's a direct result of the turnover
on the roster, right, I mean, that's sort of the
growing pains of having a roster that's completely decimated through
the NFL Draft and players leaving and bringing in so
many players and Jetfish we talked about this the last
time I came on, like how how late he was
to getting the job, and how late Calen de Boorr
left And it really does set you.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Behind the eight ball.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
So then you've got all these players you're trying to
get continuity or trying to get players disciplined. You're trying
to get them to play within a game and learn
how to win, and I think that was a that
was probably one of those learning process games.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
But you're right.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
I mean, Kyle Mnunguy is one of the better backs
in the country. If not I'm definitely in the Big ten,
but one of the better backs in the in the
Big ten for sure. And I thought they held up well.
I thought they moved the ball well. And it will
be a similar style of game. That's why I do
think Washington will be.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Prepared for this.
Speaker 4 (04:21):
And I would say I would take it a step
further and say Rutgers had a better passing attack with
the Athan kalik mannus than what Michigan will have. So
the defense will be the bigger challenge, right because Rutgers
defense is pretty physical.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Now.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
I remember talking to Great Giano and he was like,
we have some NFL talent on our team, and clearly
Michigan does.
Speaker 3 (04:38):
That to me, will be the bigger challenge. You know.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
I think Washington will have the success, but the bigger
challenge will be blocking a couple first round players. Mason
Graham's an absolute beast on the interior that Michigan defense. But
I do I think the one thing you trust is
that Will Rogers is going to take care of the football.
You know, he's a incredibly experienced quarterback and he's got
thirteen thousand passing yards in his career, and I think
(05:02):
he's delivered exactly what Washington staff has wanted him to do.
Provide stability, don't turn the ball over, and make good decisions.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Dandy Kanal, who's always making good decisions unless he's on
this radio show, is with us courtesy a bet online
dot netl the Heisman Trophy, odds, twelve team playoff, odds,
National Championship, all that stuff coming down. And I do
want to ask you about Oregon and Michigan State tonight.
I think the lines like the Ducks minus twenty four,
twenty five whatever. I'll get the exact number four you
(05:32):
here in a second, But I don't know. This just
kind of feels like a get right game for the
Ducks man against the old beaver head coach and Jonathan Smith,
what do you think about tonight's game?
Speaker 4 (05:42):
I agree, I actually I like the Ducks. Now it
is a key number, like where do you get it at?
What's hovering around that twenty four which is a key number.
If it's over twenty four, I'd probably avoid it. But
if you can get it at twenty four under twenty
three and a half, Yep. Yeah, that's where I like
the Ducks. I actually like them in this situation. Michigan
State and you talk about a rebuild process. Their quarterback
(06:04):
Aiden Childs has been throwing it frequently to the other.
Speaker 3 (06:07):
Team, which is not ideal.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
He's got one of the worst touchdown interception ratios in
the country. You guys, I'm sure, are familiar with him
when he was in Oregon State. He followed Jonathan Smith there.
I think he's going to be fine in the long term.
But I do think this is like the one thing
that kind of worries me. Is Oregon looking ahead to
the Ohio State game next year next week. I don't
think they are. I think they've got really good leadership.
(06:32):
I think Dan Lanning knows what's at stake. I think
this will be a crisp, almost like a dress rehearsal game,
where it is a pretty clean game. And I think
Michigan State is just in one of those rebuild spots.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
If it was on the road, I'm may be a
little bit more worried about it.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
The fact that it's in Eugene, I feel pretty good
about And I don't know if you guys saw this.
I just saw this number come out that Ohio State.
The early line was just released and Ohio State is
a two and a half point favorite against the Ducks
next week, when of course they come to Eugene that game.
I think we'll live up to the billing. But back
to Oregon, I think they're getting right at the right time.
(07:05):
Like I know that the expectations were really high and
it kind of disappointed some people early, but they have
been slowly getting right. I think they'll be peeking at
the right time, and I think tonight will be a
final tune up for the Ducks. So I do like
them to cover this number of Michigan State's having a
rough year so far.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
Soft You mentioned the heismanogey got there on bed online,
and if you don't go to USC, your chances of
winning a Heisman Trophy on the West Coast are very,
very very small. But Ashton genty right now is ten
to one? Is that is that a shekel or two?
You'd put on ten to one? And what does he
have to do to get it done?
Speaker 4 (07:40):
It depends on if you think he can break Barry
Sanders all time rushing record in college but I believe
is twenty eight, twenty six and twenty six yards, which
is on pace. Actually to challenge he has to do
something that special. That's one of the criteria. I think
he has to have a record setting season. The other
thing I think they have to do, and they are
(08:01):
in a driver's seat right now, is they have to
be the group of five representative in the playoff, which
you would know with that conference championship weekend. But I
do think those are two things he's got to do.
And even in their loss against Oregon, he had one
hundred and ninety three yards rushing in three tds.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Like normally a.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
Loss for any Heisman will kind of knock you out
and knock you down. I think people look at that,
and Heisman voters especially look at that and say, man,
that might have been one of the most impressive performances
yet doing against Oregon's defense. So I would also throw
in there it would it would really benefit Ashton genty
if Oregon wins. The big ten or is in that
conversation as well, because then that performance will stand up
(08:40):
even more. But I like him, I don't have him
at the top right now. Because I do think it's
an uphill battle playing at the group of five, playing
at Boise State. These are just challenges, and I do
have Jalen Milroe and Travis Hunter are ahead of him.
But all you have to do is keep plugging away
because typically when you're at the top, you usually like
we look for perfection, right and all there's one direction
(09:01):
to go is down, Like if Jalen Morro has a
game where he struggles, or the SEC championship game, if
he loses, that could knock him down. The same thing
with Travis Hunter. If he doesn't get the eight wins,
I don't think he can win it. So I think
aston Gent is actually in a really good position if
he just consistently goes out there and delivers the way
he has, and he should this weekend in a massive
stat padding game against Utah State.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
Right well, Danny Kanell is with US bet online dot
Net with us every now and then talking college football.
Check bet online dot Net for all the odds this
weekend as well. Heisman Trophy odds is more. And don't
mean to look past Michigan because that'd be obviously idiotic
to look past the Wolverines. But we're going to be
in Iowa next weekend for the Iowa game, and Iowa's
(09:43):
got Ohio State this weekend in Columbus. Do the Hawkeys
have a shot at upsetting Ohio State?
Speaker 2 (09:51):
And if they do? How big?
Speaker 1 (09:53):
How crazy is that atmosphere going to be at Kinnick
Stadium next Saturday when the Dogs go to Iowa.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Oh my goodness, it'll be absolutely insane if Iowa pulls
that off. I don't think they do, though, which is
good news because I didn't. I think you've got to
like Washington's chances maybe to get a road win against
the team that will be again very similar. I think
that's the good news for Steve Belichick, the defensive coordinator Washington.
He's not having the prep for a lot of fancy
(10:20):
passing attacks.
Speaker 3 (10:21):
Right.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
You're getting a good look at what it's like playing
in the Big Ten where the running backs and the
offensive linemen are great, but the quarterback play has been subpar,
including at Iowa.
Speaker 3 (10:32):
Here's what concerns me.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
And I know Iowa has a new offensive coordinator and
Kye McNamara, their quarterback is healthy.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
But last year Iowa.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Faced three ap top twenty five teams and in those
three games last year they were outscored ninety two to
nothing zero. They need to take a big step forward,
and unfortunately for them, now we're talking about great back.
Caleb Johnson has been outstanding for them, and I think
he's gonna have to have one of those games that's
really special. But I do think it will be him
(11:02):
going against a lot of loaded bots, which he's already
been seeing, you know, eight to nine man fronts, where
he's gonna have to really carry a lot of the workload.
Speaker 3 (11:09):
On his own.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
And Cave McNamara against the two Power four opponents they played,
has not eclipsed one hundred yards passing, and I just
the other aspect.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
And Iowa always has a.
Speaker 4 (11:19):
Really good defense, and I wouldn't expect anything less from
a Kirk Barns coach team.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
But Iowa State, excuse me.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Ohio State has so many weapons, and they look so tough,
and they look so talented. Jeremiah Smith is one of those.
If there's multiple true freshmen are having phenomenal seasons, but
Ohio State, I think is just going to be too
much there. Even though it's a look ahead game for
them as well. I think Ohio State is gonna have
too much for Iowa.
Speaker 5 (11:45):
Well, no question, Alabama Georgia lives up to the billing.
That may end up being the twenty twenty four game
of the year. When do we see the rematch? Do
we see it in the SEC Championship game or are
we going to have to wait till the College Football Playoff?
Speaker 4 (11:57):
I think you're gonna have to wait for the College
Football Playoff. I think Texas is the best team in
the country right now, including over Alabama. I had that
number one. Of course that'll figure itself out. Texas schedule
is more favorable. How about this for Georgia, who lost
that game, they still have to go to Texas where.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
That line will be really interesting.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
I think it'll probably be Texas will be a small favorite.
Then they have to go too Old Miss. Then they
play Tennessee at home. So they still have three really good,
challenging games where I wonder if Georgia would get back
to the SEC Championship game, and that was my pick
to make it. There was going to be a Texas
versus Georgia. Now I'm starting to lean towards Texas versus
(12:41):
Bama potentially in that matchup.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
But I will say this, I.
Speaker 4 (12:44):
Do feel like across the board there has been more
parody in college football than ever before. And I think
sometimes we speak in hyperbolid terms like, oh, this team
is unbeatable and they're in a league all by themselves,
and these top three teams are in a tier by themselves,
even those teams who traditionally have been that. I think
even the top teams are gettable this year is evidenced
(13:06):
by George who almost got beat by Kentucky a couple
of weeks ago.
Speaker 3 (13:09):
Yep, you know we saw Notre Dame get beat.
Speaker 4 (13:11):
By Northern Illinois, and I know we see upsets every
year in college football, but I think the talent is
starting to spread out because of the transfer portal, and
I think it makes for awesome regular season games. They're
going to be really close, and there's gonna be a
lot more upsets coming our way this college football season.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Clem's in Florida State, Danny Yer alma mater tomorrow, and
Danny Canell again with us courtesy a bet online dot Net,
And I just I don't know, man, I just wonder
how much Florida State is just kind of just still
dealing with the letdown of getting left out of the
final four year ago and the pall that had cast
over the entire university, the entire football team. I mean,
(13:48):
I saw Dju play at Oregon State. Dickson play at
Oregon State. He can't throw the ball. And I don't
know what Mike Norveld saw to go out and buy
him and bring him to Tallahassee. But how much trouble
is Florida State in and subsequently Mike Norvelli you.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
Think, you know, it's been such a nice interview with
you guys before and now like now I'm pouring myself
a drink, like starting to drink.
Speaker 1 (14:15):
Hey, it's five where you're at all right, it's time
for a cocktail?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
Anyway, exactly it is. It's Friday. It has been I mean,
and look, as a.
Speaker 4 (14:24):
Florida State grad and somebody who watches them closely, this
has probably been one of the most disappointing first five
games of a season that I've seen in Florida State history.
And it's because of the the expectations, like there have
been bad seasons before, but you felt like, oh, this
is going to be a rough year. This was a
year where, you know, Florida State was a lot of
(14:45):
people predicted them to win the ACC to get to
the playoffs, and you know you're thinking, worst case it'll
be an eight or and nine win season, and it
has completely come off the rails. I think there's two
things that happened. I don't think DJ got what he
signed up for, and I don't don't think Florida State
got what they signed up for. And what I mean
by that is I thought Florida State thought that DJ
(15:05):
was going to bring in some experience in leadership and
they would ask him to be a game manager, and
that their defense would be dominant enough to if to
help him through the process if he was struggling. And
then I also thought they would give DJ a good
running game and an incredible offensive line because they brought
back a ton of talent. They haven't given DJ any
(15:27):
of that, and DJ, on the flip side, hasn't really
delivered because I felt like they felt.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
DJ would keep them. This is what I thought too.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
I thought it was a I didn't love the move,
but I thought it would be safe, like there was
the floor where eight wins would be the bottom drops out,
and instead we saw his worst performance and he looks
completely shell shocked there and his confidence is done and
now you know they're making the move to brock Lend
because DJ broke his finger. But it has been an
(15:54):
absolute disaster, and I think there's I think Mike Norbel
is as flabbergasted as anybody searching for the why and
how to make sure this doesn't happen again. And I
do think Florida State, Mike Norvel probably got a little
bit too transfer portal heavy and did not you know.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Recruit well enough.
Speaker 4 (16:10):
There has to be a balance, in my opinion, in
today's game of homegrown talent, and then you fill the
holes with you know, the transfer portal players. And we've
seen you know, teams like Georgia, Ohio State they recruit
really well and then they bring in guys to you know,
booster certain positions. I think Florida State got a little
bit and it's it worked like they struck it hot, like.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
The iron was hot. Last year.
Speaker 4 (16:32):
They hit the portal and it worked, they run the table,
they're undefeated, and so they went back to that well
and they got burned by it this year. And then
you really then it does become like more of a
culture issue, like how invested are you in fighting for
Florida State and your teammates when you've only been together
for five or six months. Right, I think that's a
problem too that Florida State is dealing.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
With now, no, no question.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
All right, man, listen, great stuff and enjoy that cocktail, buddy.
Speaker 2 (16:55):
And we'll talk soon. Man, appreciate it, dude.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
I'm gonna need about five or stick them back in
Florida State com I don't.

Hugh Millan, by the way, who still remains the Husky
quarterback to have a win over the highest ranked Michigan
team of all time. They were number two when they
beat him in eighty four? My god, was that forty
years ago? Holy crap.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
He will join us at five o'clock on ninety three
to three kJ r FM.
Speaker 6 (17:36):
Now back to the Washington State Beat Commissions Football Friday
with stick on your home for the NFL Sports Radio
ninety three point three kJ r FM.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
All right, you dove, Michigan tomorrow. I think the conversation
are having off the air. You know, it's like an
old sports talk radio, you know, reliable.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
What's the biggest game of the weekends? Giants?
Speaker 1 (18:00):
I'm kind of with you, Jackson to me, and I
hope I don't regret saying this on Monday, But the
Seahawks Giants to me just feels like a fad of company.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
I think the Hawks are gonna kick their ass on Sunday.
I think the game is tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
Yes, I think the Hawks can play C minus and
still win seventeen ninety.
Speaker 7 (18:17):
Right, Huskies can't do that. No, No, they have to.
I think the Huskies game is far more intrigued. Ninety
percent of my mind right now in terms of football,
obviously it's always on Sounders note percent of her football
is always, or is this week specifically on utub Michigan
because this, honestly, guys, we said last week, really look
at a bowl game. We gotta get Rutgers. Now we
(18:38):
reset and we say we have to get this game.
Speaker 1 (18:41):
Here's the thing about it, though, from the NFL perspective,
they could afford to maybe kick the line game a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (18:46):
It is a conference game.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
There is a tiebreaker involved there, which may come into
play if they If the Seahawks, god forbid, do lose
this game Sunday, everything that they earned at three and
oh is gone. That's right, right, So this is a
more meeting full Seahawk game almost if they lose it.
Speaker 5 (19:02):
Well, obviously the NFL playoffs are more important than a
bowl game. I think we all agree with that, But this
just seems like a pendulum game for Washington because if
they win the game, you're four and two, You've righted
the ship. You've got a national victory on national television
against they're defending even though it's a different team, it's
the defending national champions, right, and you can see down
(19:23):
the road like, hey, maybe we can go seven and five,
eight and four. Maybe this team is good enough to
do those things. Because then you're looking back at the
Rutgers game and go, damn, we're really close to being
four and one. Damn we're really close to vie there.
Speaker 2 (19:37):
Yeah, I mean the vibes will be there if they
lose this game.
Speaker 5 (19:39):
I think Husky Nation is flushing the same question. Yeah,
absolutely flushing.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
You know what's really funny about something you just said
and you don't even realize it, and I know, I'm
I'm kind of nitpicking here, but it's more it's I'm
not nick nitpicking at you at all. It's more of
just a commentary on what sports television has become. You
and I grew up in an era where we would
say things like national TVs.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
Every game is now in national, right, but in.
Speaker 5 (20:05):
My opinion, every game, in my opinion, the games the
games that you can stick rabbit ears on your TV, right,
I get that that's national, but you're But that's because
you're fifty years old.
Speaker 3 (20:17):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (20:17):
But for a guy like him who's thirty, everything is
available everywhere ESPN plus Paramount Peacock, NBC, ABC, Fox, FS one, whatever.
There is no such thing as national TV because there's
no more regional television. There isn't like they're not splitting
the country up anymore. Remember that girl, Yeah, dude, they
used to take ABC. West coast will see USC UCLA,
(20:39):
the midwest will see Nebraska, Colorado, in the east coast
will see Miami and classes jack Is.
Speaker 5 (20:44):
It's how Fox and CBS work with the NFL.
Speaker 2 (20:46):
Right now, right, those days are over.
Speaker 5 (20:48):
They actually had a map of the country in the
Seattle Times. Yes, and you would see Michigan Washington. It
was like the West Coast and Michigan so.
Speaker 7 (20:55):
Hot that for on Twitter for the football games, the
NFL on Sundays own number that you could call it
to gain scores.
Speaker 5 (21:02):
Man, it was unbelievable. Time sports Line all.
Speaker 1 (21:04):
Right, Jedfish going out there every week kind of feels
like we've been getting longer and longer time with him.
It started off as like ninety seconds, than it was
two minutes, then it was three minutes. This is like
five minutes long. This is the biggest conversation we've ever had.
It must be worth it. I mean I don't know.
I mean, is it worth it? You would have shut
it down if it wasn't. I like to go, well,
(21:25):
I'm not going to get rid of stuff. He says.
You think he's so bad on the air that we
have to edit his interviews. I'm just saying, is it
worth it for him? Is it worth it for us?
I guy, Yeah, I stopped by there on the way
to the five twenty Monday. I go back there and
then turn right back around and go to the freaking
Emerald Quinen Casino. So that's a drive. Thursday is no problem.
Jetfish before this game tomorrow. Had a chance to catch
up with him yesterday and asked him how does he
(21:47):
evaluate himself as coaching staff as players after five games.
Speaker 8 (21:51):
I don't really look at it in terms of in
this short of a term. I mean, I think that
anybody in our situation with you know what, all the
changes that occurred as we're looking through it, how would
we be evaluated if we made a couple of plays
here or there.
Speaker 9 (22:08):
I don't know.
Speaker 8 (22:09):
I just look at it as for the long term,
this process of getting better.
Speaker 9 (22:13):
We're getting better.
Speaker 8 (22:14):
Our team's playing really hard, you know, it's a tough
game to go on the road, three thousand miles away
at night to the second largest crowd, and we had
plenty of opportunities to win the game.
Speaker 9 (22:23):
Yeah, So that's how I look at it.
Speaker 10 (22:25):
I feel like I'm the annoying guy that keeps bringing
up the penalties in these.
Speaker 3 (22:27):
Press conference every week.
Speaker 10 (22:29):
But you were eighty second in penalty yards at Arizona
last year, one hundred and twenty eighth this year. How
much does that eat at you?
Speaker 8 (22:37):
You know, I don't know, it's stressful when you you know,
I think there were one hundred and twenty seventh Lester
in penalties at Washington, So you can overcome it sometimes
and other times you can. I don't think that's really
a big part of Necessarily, it's the type of penalties
that bother me.
Speaker 9 (22:56):
It's not the penalties itself.
Speaker 8 (22:58):
The twenty one fifteen yard penalties are excruciating, and that.
Speaker 9 (23:03):
Keeps me up every night.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
How much do you do that?
Speaker 10 (23:06):
I do that as a fan, think about the game
the next day, think about games from ten years ago.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
How much do you find yourself at night.
Speaker 10 (23:13):
Staring at the wall, staring at the ceiling thinking about
this football team and.
Speaker 9 (23:17):
Your job, my job of being as a coach.
Speaker 8 (23:21):
I think about it all the time, as like we
all sit there and think about, you know, the games
as a fan, as a coach, as a player, whatever
it might be. We're always thinking about the game that
we just competed in the game. We're about the competing
moving forward. I look at it in terms of, you know,
all the great things too. You know, I look at
a team that, as I said, five offensive linemen that
(23:42):
weren't even here in the spring playing a tight end
that was at Nevada. You know, you look at our team,
six FCS players out of our twenty two I don't
think anybody was expecting us to be in a situation
that we really should be in right now or could
be in. So I'm very proud of our team on
how they're compete and I think if we can continue
to get better, we're gonna build a great foundation.
Speaker 10 (24:03):
Chid I used to ask Steve Sarkejian when he was here,
the same question. Every week when you're a head hits
that pillar with the team hotel on Friday night, what
are you thinking about regarding this matchep with Michigan on
Saturday everything.
Speaker 9 (24:16):
To be honest, yeah, and I'm not just saying that.
Speaker 8 (24:20):
You know, my responsibility as the head coach is to
make sure we cover every kick we make every kick,
we play great defense, we play great offense. I think
about what we're gonna get on defense. I think about
the weather, I think about the fans, I think about
I think about it all because I think that's the
responsibility you know that I've been chosen to.
Speaker 9 (24:40):
Have, and I'm so grateful for that.
Speaker 8 (24:42):
But I also have every anxiety known the man that
you know you. I don't think about whether someone will
run onto the field after.
Speaker 9 (24:48):
A block kick. I don't think about whether or not.
Speaker 8 (24:52):
But I do think about are we going to be
disciplined enough to stay away from the quarterback. Are we
going to be disciplined enough on a punt not to
rough the punter?
Speaker 3 (24:58):
You know?
Speaker 9 (24:59):
And those are things that really kind of live in
my head.
Speaker 10 (25:02):
Yeah. I heard a national writer on the show today
saying Washington should win because they can throw the football
in Michigan cannot. Do you worry about the defense sometime
getting lulled to sleep by that idea. I think you
don't have to respect the pass.
Speaker 8 (25:15):
Yeah, I've talked to the defense all week about that.
That the second you don't respect the pass is the
second you find one over your head. Yeah, and that's
just I mean, we know that if you play an
option football team, right, they beat you on that one long.
Speaker 9 (25:28):
One that you're not expecting to come.
Speaker 8 (25:30):
I'm not saying this is an option football team, but
when you look at their statistics, you're looking at an
eighty percent pass.
Speaker 9 (25:35):
A running team.
Speaker 8 (25:37):
So I think that, yeah, we've thrown the football okay
on offense, and we've run the football well on offense too.
We've got to find a way to finish drives in
the end zone and our defense.
Speaker 9 (25:46):
Has to not be lulled asleep on the run game.
Speaker 10 (25:48):
Yeah, the red zone issues. Talk about that before you
go simply put, how do you fix that?
Speaker 8 (25:53):
Well, I think that there's so many different things that
we can continue to improve upon, and it's not just
one thing. I wish the statistics are irrelevant, because the
statistics could be make some kicks and you're in the
top thirty year.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
Or you want touchdowns.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
I don't want to I don't want that. I don't
you know, I don't care about that. I care about
how do you go eighteen for eighteen and I have
seventy five percent touchdown? You know, That's what I care
about it. That's what I want, That's what we were,
That's what I expect. So we've got to find ways
to complete some passes. We got to find some ways
to make some runs in the end zone. We got
to find some ways to call some better plays that
give us a chance. All of it, and it starts
(26:29):
with what we put together on a game plan, and
then it goes into how do I call it?
Speaker 9 (26:33):
And then it goes into how we as a staff
put it all together.
Speaker 2 (26:35):
Appreciate fiscoking the man you got it.
Speaker 9 (26:37):
Appreciate you.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
So the Oskis are nine for eighteen when it comes
to red zone touchdown percentage. The NCAA tracks red zone
scoring and I hate it. I just want touchdowns right
because I feel like once teams get inside the red zone,
if think it helld to three, that's kind of a
win for the defense.
Speaker 2 (26:55):
To be honest with you, you.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
Dub was at like seventy percent a year ago and
now they're at fifty percent. So that's definitely a difference
between this year and last year. He is right about
the penalty yards. I don't know if Dick, if you
look at overall penalties or overall yards, I mean to me,
it's the yards that you're losing when you commit penalties, right,
Like you want five fall starts versus five personal fouls.
Speaker 2 (27:16):
I mean it's a toy different story.
Speaker 5 (27:18):
Right, you get five for seventy five yards, that's a problem.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
So last year the Huskies, Jet's exactly right.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
They were one hundred and twenty ninth in total penalty
yards at sixty eight point six yards per game. Now
they're at eighty one, so they've added almost fifteen yards
per game in defense in penalties versus where.
Speaker 2 (27:37):
They were a year ago.
Speaker 1 (27:38):
But hey, they don't have Michael Pennix and Romadunza and
Jalen Polk and Troy Fatana and Rosenhosen and all those guys.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
They can't afford to be making mistakes like that.
Speaker 5 (27:47):
I kind of thought it was interesting that he brought
up last year's team. Well, last year's team was worse
than we That's exactly how he set it to, right.
Speaker 1 (27:55):
So, I've never been around a coach that no stats
off the top of his head more than this guy
as incredible.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
Is incredible, and he pays attention to me. I don't mind.
I don't mind him paying attention to stats as long
as he's just taken responsibility for what they're doing, what
they're not doing. Yeah, and it sounds for the most
part that he is no I think.
Speaker 3 (28:13):
So.
Speaker 1 (28:13):
I mean, look, Michigan, this is a game where I think, again,
you just can't get burned by the pass at all,
and shame on them if they do, because the Huskies
have the number six passing defense in the country at
one hundred and twenty eight yards per game.
Speaker 2 (28:28):
Now, that might be who they played so far, it's
certainly part of it.
Speaker 1 (28:31):
Four point four to four yards per attempt is what
they're allowing, which is MIDI School Michigan. On the opposite
side of the ball, passing offense is doing nothing. You're
talking about the number six passing defense in America versus
the number one hundred and twenty nine passing offense in
the country in the Wolverines. That has to stay that way. Tomorrow,
(28:52):
we're gonna break textimonials. Hugh Millen joins a five right
here on ninety three to three KJARFM.
