is fun to say that, And that's kind of part
of the whole. I mean, the answer is I don't know,
uh huh, but uh maybe not. But that being said,
that's sort of the idea of having a twelve team playoff.

You just said nothing for like twenty seconds. What do
you mean you just maybe? I don't know, it could
be that's what we'll do.

Well, that's the idea. Is the idea is the possibility. Right.
So it's past October, yes, where, yes, almost to Thanksgiving?
And if you're Washington State and you're still thinking about
making the college football playoff after everybody has defecated and
urinated on your program, wow for years because the whole

Pac twelve thing and all that, right, I mean, that's
pretty darn impactful, and you got to give Jake Dickert
credit for getting them to eight and one. No mid
season loll. I'm sure you could say some of the
Mountain West teams they've played maybe aren't as good as
who they played last year, but these aren't bad teams.
And Boise punched him in the neck. But Boise's very,
very good and John Mattier has emerged as a great player.

But anyway, I have two games this weekend, so I
will not be traveling. But you know, but it makes
me think about this, the whole college football playoff thing
that you mentioned, and I've always gone back to that
this one weird statistic, even though I'm not a stat guy,
and it's that the more regions of the country that

are involved in college football, the longer the season goes on,
the better it is for the sport. So when Oregon
in the Chip Kelly days before they had this crazy,
weird developed offensive line and Auburn with Cam Newton played
against each other in the BCS title game in Glendale, Arizona,
(04:32):
sure that was and it was a pretty good game
and Oregon kind of almost came back.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Was that the Darren Thomas picking his nose game. Yeah, right, got.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
It that that game was the highest rated BCS championship game,
And like the whole endeavor, and you think about it,
like who lives in Eugene. Nobody. It's not a big
place and it looks like New York City compared to Auburn, Alabama,

which is a place I've been out on the planes.
So why was everybody involved? Why did everybody watch? Well
a big part of it was that it was a
whole country being involved, right, it wasn't Alabama versus LSU
for the third time in the season, or that's right.
So I think it's a good thing regardless of whether
or not the Cougs actually have a chance now. I mean, look,

they've done really well for themselves, and I'm happy for them.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I agree with you that it's enhanced the regular season.
And I remember getting into it with guys like Clat
back in the day, you know, like, what does he
really know about all? This is going to ruin the
regular season?
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Clad is great, but he thinks he thinks Lincoln Riley's
still going to come around.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Well he's wrong about that, but he thought it was
going to ruin the regular season. And I think he's nuts.
I mean, looking like like Alabama any other year would
be done, they'd be finished right now. But they're staying
alive in their game with Oklahoma in a couple of weeks,
in the Auburn game, the iron Ball, this game with
New Mexico, and the Cougs SMU playing this weekend against
Boston College. Who would have given a damn about games

like that.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I'm sure that nobody except for idiots like me, they
do games like that, right, But uh, you know, and
I respect everybody that we deal with in football, whether
they have a chance to make a championship yeah or not.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
That's not really true though. There's a lot of people
that you don't respect tons.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Well when we're actually working and doing the games and
not sitting here and farting around on the radio, you know,
I mean, you have to. You have to respect the
the endeavor that everybody's going through. Even though when you
strip it down to nothing, it's a bunch of guys
running around in plastic outfits, bunking into each other, ruining
their bodies while an older man screams inspirational words. It's

a little bit strange, I mean, is it's a little strange,
But you know what is just described it perfectly. It's football,
and we all cheer like in a stand. But it
is kind of interesting because I don't know if political
media people, although they seem even more despicable than the

sports media, and that's probably hard to do.

Wait, who's more despicable than sports media?

Political political media? But what I'm saying is I wonder if, like,
after a few decades, like you and I, you know,
how how tired you get of the predictability of your colleagues. Right,
so here we are in November, and of course, because
ESPN propagandizes their own product, which is the SEC and

the college Football Playoff, both of which belong to the
evil four letter, you're already starting to hear that bald
head lady, although I think she grew some hair, Heather Dinwich,
and then I always thought she had like a short
like a pixie haircut. And then and then fine Balm

and all the talking heads they aren't screaming about how
like a three loss SEC team belongs in the playoff
and a four loss SEC team I wouldn't ride them off.
And you know, everybody starts to push and push Indiana,
who have they played and all of that, and then
all the Fox people because they have the Big ten,
and CBS and NBC has a big ten, they're gonna

all speak up for the Big ten. And it's just
so predictable and annoying.

I don't see any pictures of Heather with short hair
at all.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
I guess that's just how I saw it.

I don't know what you're talking about, man, but that's fine.
Maybe that's maybe she wore.

Maybe she wore like a really intense beret one day

segment so much, because everyone takes themselves so seriously in
this business. You know, I'm gonna go on here and
give you my top seventeen reasons why the Huskies can
win this game Friday.

It's a well, it's all.

You know what they do? Is it you and me problem?

Speaker 2 (09:10):
Probably? But you know, look, I'm a football analyst. I
call games. I do the whole deal. If I think
something's important enough to point out, I try to do it,
but I don't try to be dogmatic about it. And
I certainly am not trying to talk down to everybody
like they have no idea what could possibly be going
on out there. I mean, football is already confusing enough,

and you really can't know what any team is trying
to do unless you're really in their building or on
their headphones and all that, and even then you'll probably
have a hard time figuring it out. Right. The point
is just enjoy it for what it is, and if
something's important, if you think is important, convey it. But
beyond that, I mean, come on.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
By the way, it wasn't Supergirl. It was Billy Jean
with Helen Slater with the short hair. Hey, how concerned
should I be about the uh Deshaun Foster led Bruins
coming to town Friday?
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Very you know? I look, I've we've made some fun
of Deshaun Foster in town and on this show, and
I gotta say, of course, they did not look good
to start the season. And I would equate this with
another team that I'm doing this week, the Houston Cougars.
Right coach by Willi Fritz now Willi Fritz.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
I just like the way that you say the name
Willy Fritz.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Willi Fritz was the last Chance you guy. And then
he was at Georgia Southern, and then he was at Tulane.
He won that Sugar Bowl, beat Caleb Williams at Tulane.
And he's doing this. He's not a young man, he's
not an old guy, but he's doing this because he
wants to see if his system will work at the

highest level in the power for and he's at Houston,
and it's a pretty good stop for him because of
just the type of player he's had success with and
the type of players Houston brings. Anyway, they started the
year and they were terrible. They lost to UNLV, they
didn't even compete. They had a couple games where they
didn't score a point and it was very bad, and
(11:15):
people were making fun of them and talking bad, kind
of like we did about Deshan Foster. And Houston's won
a couple straight beat Utah, who's a well coached team.
They beat Kansas State, who's ranked who was ranked like
sixteen or seventeen at the time, and suddenly everybody seems
to know what they're doing. They've batten down the hatches
(11:38):
and figured out an identity offensively and defensively. They're running
the ball, they're not making mistakes, and that's like UCLA.
That's exactly UCLA's won three straight into Big Ten. They've
been physical, they've cut down on their mistakes, they've cut
down on getting the quarterback sacked, and they're running the
ball with anger, with a really good tailback named TJ.
(12:00):
Harden out of Inglewood who does not waste a lot
of motion. And I would expect Willie Fritz to have
it figured out right, because Willi Fritz is a veteran
coach who's completely and totally self sufficient. All of his
assistants have come with him, they've coached with him at
(12:20):
all kinds of different places, even places where they had
to worry about doing the laundry and being the team
the team ustritionists and things like that. Now that's not
the case with Deshaun Dashawn is a first year coach.
The job kind of fell in his lap because the
relationship with Chip Kelly and the AD was mismanaged by
(12:43):
both of those men. He ended up with whatever staff
he ended up with, but it happened late, and everybody
was kind of caught with their pants down. And yet
he's been able to convey a message, get players to
lock arms and continue working even when you're not winning,
and when you're being attacked from the outside people saying
you're not gonna win a conference game to the thirty
(13:04):
first of February and all that, and they've all figured
out how to take steps forward together and make the
football season look better. They're probably gonna get Bowl eligible, right,
They're probably going to beat USC's ass. And I think
Deshaun Foster and the ad who seems a little bit
(13:25):
like a blow hard, but the ad, Martin Jarman, they
deserve a lot of credit. They deserve a ton of credit. Now.
Of course, if they go up there and lose, and
they lose to Fresno and lose to sc or lose
you know, two or two or three of the next four,
then it's all just this little burp will be a
fart in a whirlwind and Deshaun will have to rebuild
(13:46):
for next season.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
They had three games left against five win you dub,
four win u S and five win Fresno, Right, so
it's certainly possible they can do it. Did you watch
the penns Day game at all Saturday?
Speaker 2 (13:57):
I know you guys got run over.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Well, it was like, did you ever see the movie
Hancock with Will Smith?
Speaker 2 (14:02):
No, I don't. I try to avoid Will Smith. He
called and cussed me out at the station once. Really
it was Chris Rock, but long before him. Wow, I
was gonna say they hate for Will Smith as pre
Chris Rock.
Speaker 4 (14:13):

I attacked him for remaking the Karate Kid and putting
his kid in it.

And what did he do?

Well, it was like in Hancock, Jackson. You've seen Hancock
right when he is in prison and he says, I'm
gonna shove your head up his ass. And that's what
happened to you, dub. I mean they had their own
heads shoved up their butt.

Oh, I've seen people actually try to do that.
Speaker 3 (14:48):
It was It was a disaster. But they played Demon
Williams the entire second. They benched Will Rogers for the
second half, and they played the eighteen year old Frenchman
And now a lot of people want to see more.
But j had starting Will Rogers again Friday versus UCLA.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Somebody made an interesting point to me because Houston is
playing Arizona and they think, yeah, they lost a lot
of players on the offensive line. I don't know if
Dino Babers is being very well received as the play caller.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
They lost a lot of players on the offensive line.
We lost everybody.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah, I mean they lost like before the season even started,
you know what I mean. They thought they had people
the right, right, right, and then they've lost their three
best defenders, you know, the whole brains of the outfit,
and they're really struggling. But it's interesting because Arizona's were
Fish left and they got Brent Brennan, who I like
a lot from San Jose, and everybody in Arizona's miserable
(15:47):
with Brennan. I don't think people are exactly thrilled.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Is that a commentary though, on the job that Jed
did down there, that hey, he takes off and look
at Fafeeda's numbers, look at McMillan's numbers.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Well yeah, but and like just shift the world and
you go up to Washington. Nobody at Washington's pleased with
Fish really right now, especially after they just saw their own.
Speaker 3 (16:09):

But think of it then there and then think people
at Alabama that geeked up about Debor.

You know, he's on a week to week thing, fighting
for his life because he's replacing a legend. You know,
it's a very interesting shift. The only school that's happy
is San Jose State because they kept both of Brennan's
coordinators mcgiven and Odum and ken Nea Montalolo's bawl eligible Yeah,
you know, I'm proud of the Spartan. So it's kind

of an interesting shift in the world where no one
is happy with where they went. You know, in the
current moment.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Let me let me ask you before you go, because
I do want to I do want to get serious
here for a second, bring the room down a little
bit and just get your thoughts on the passing of
John Robinson, Oh.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
My old coach. Yeah, he was something else. He was
a great coach and really you know, and he did
something that's almost impossible to do. What a segue, because
we just talked about what Caleb de boor our friend
is trying to do in Tuscaloosa. John McKay is one
of the most legendary coaches in the history of college football,
(17:21):
and around the time he retired, you could say he
was as revered as Nick Saban. He didn't retire. He
went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be there a
head coach of the new franchise. But when he left USC,
I should say in the seventies, John Robinson did the impossible.
He continued the legacy. He took over and won a
(17:42):
national championship, and won four Rose Bowls, and had Charles
White and so on and so forth, all those guys.
So I mean, that's just the way back history of
John Robinson. Forget the fact that he took the Rams
to a bunch of NFC title games back in those
days where they just couldn't get over the hump of
the Bears or the forty nine ers. But Jim Everett,
(18:04):
Eric Dickerson, Henry Ellard, Flipper Anderson, those were great teams.
And then there's so many tentacles to the guy's life.
He was a big innovator of offensive run game football,
like we take for granted. You know, the tight end,
standing up, stepping back into the backfield, waving the receiver
(18:25):
on the line of scrimmage, and then going in the motion.
All those different things zip zap motion, the full back
going week or strong off the I formation. All that
stuff was Joe Gibbs John Robinson developed at USC North
Turner in those days. He was a master teacher of
the run game and a great players coach. I think
(18:46):
he loved USC more than USC loved him, which is
kind of a sad thing. The way that developed. He
was the eight. If UNLV wasn't playing the way they
are now, he'd be their best coach of the modern air.
He did okay there, and no one's ever done okay
there other than Harvey Hyde when he had Randall Cunningham.
(19:08):
So he was a legend at UNLV and beloved there
for what he did, and ed Ogeron took great care
of him, even though they didn't make a connection at USC.
It was Paul Hackett that hired ed ed Ogeron, hired
him as a special assistant and brought him along for
the ride in those very special times at LSU, specifically
the greatest college football season ever where they went undefeated
(19:30):
with Joe Burrow, So he was really something else to
play for, and he had a command over the room
as a communicator. I think you've heard him speak before. Yeah,
that was very very I mean, to be coached by
that guy when you're a teenager is pretty impressive, pretty amazing.
(19:52):
And I just do remember I told this story a
couple of times my first meeting at USC. Everybody was
in the room going crazy, you know that. It was
like the scene and lean on me right before he
kicked everybody out of school, right, just chaos in the
gym and everybody just hush, comes down and he walks
in front of the room and he would always give
(20:14):
it a good fifteen seconds so you could admire his
outfit Jesus, sandals, sands, a belts, tucked in to a
button down, flowery nylon shirt, chest, hair out, gold chains,
California tan, slick back hair, gold bracelet, gold rings. Ye
looking sweet yep. And the first thing he said was,
(20:36):
if you have a gun, leave it at home. I
don't want him walk a room he's got a gun. Jesus.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
With that, I'm thinking about jar Jar Binks.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Just the was a lot like that. He was very nix.
He was very Nicksonian. It is deliberate.

how they feel about their coaches. I mean, Alabama's gone

in Tuscaloosa. So that's going on. And he said with
us last segment, he says, Husky fans are unhappy with Jedfish?

Like they say, what anything over fifty percent is a
good approval rating? Is that kind of how that would
works for a president? I guess I have no idea.

percent a long long time. What would Jedfish's approval rating
be in Seattle? Would it be over fifty, would it

be under fifty, over sixty, under forty fifty five? How
would we describe how the Husky fan base feels about
Jedfish right now?

I think it would be over fifty percent? Rp okay.

But I do think that there is a group that
are probably there is a bigger group that are adamantly
opposed to Jedfish than there are that are adamantly forging Fish.

So let's let's do a poll here, all right, let's
make this official.

So how would I word this on social media? Do
you guys the job Jedfish is doing?

do you think people would say.

I think it's gonna be about forty percent approval because
I think, Dick, you absolutely nailed it. There is a
group of people that are going to say no, no
matter what.

He could have two.

Losses this year and they'd probably sign out, right, So
you're gonna have that group, and I think that group
is so much larger than the just going to approve
of anything group. And then it's the in betweens that
I think you have some of the fans who understand
that's so gutted, so okay, this is expected. I just
think the end of the day, this team is on
the verge of not making a bowl game, and they

got to beat uc Able to do that. And at
that extent, this is a team that was in the
National Championship last year, and people's standards now are maybe.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
Right or wrong very high. Well, and I would just
I would rephrase what you just said. I don't know
if the group of people is definitely larger as opposed
to louder. They're louder, right, I mean the group of
people that are not happy with Jedfish for whatever reason,
recruiting transfer portal coaching for whatever reason, I think are

definitely a lot more loud, because, let's face it, we
don't hear from people. And we've said this many times,
Dick been doing this for a long time, like sixty
combined years. People don't text the radio station. Hey, I
wanted you to know how happy I am right with
the job that you're doing. I want you to know
how pleased I am with the Mariners. Hey, what a

great game by right? That just doesn't happen. That's like
the nature of the people that interact with the radio station.
It's funny you brought that up.

I got a text from a friend Todco's you should
do a poll which GM is going to get fired first,
the Poto Francis or John Schneider.
Speaker 3 (24:56):
I was like, geeze, dude, well, I mean, I mean,
it's a good question. But that's what that's what people are,
and you know that's what that's what gets them excited.
Like for example, when you went you know what. I
had the same conversation with a buddy of mine the
other day who's pissed off at the news. Can't stand
the news, doesn't watch the news because all the news
does is report the one thing out of one hundred

that's a negative. Like how many times do you flip
on King Cairo Como Fox thirteen? Whatever the news tonight?
Somebody went to school and got home safe right, or
somebody got into a car and there was no accent,
never getting We don't hear about the ten thousand cars
that were on the road where nothing happened. You hear
about the one car that was on the road that

got into it freaking wreck. I think, so that's the
nature of this business.

Well, I think if there are people out there that
are adamantly opposed to jadfish, then I don't think a
jedfish ever had a chance with them because I would
just simply ask them, what did you expect?

you expect ten and two in a playoff spot?

I mean, is that really what you exc I didn't
you know, so what I expected? Yeah, you expected six

to get the seven and five, but they can still
get the six and six. And you know, six and
six is not great by any stretch of the imagination.
But considering the circumstances, that's why our expectations were so
modest this year.

Because of the circumstance. I just think he gets a
little bit of a pass for year one because of
the personnel he's dealing with, you know, no offensive line,
and look, I'll be honest with you. I was out
there yesterday and they trotted out Cam Davis, Giles, Jackson, DiAngelo,
Titi ali Is the offensive players, then brought in three
defensive guys. But I had to take off and go
(26:42):
talk to Cam for the pregame show, so I couldn't stay.
But I'm looking at D'Angelo and I wanted to walk
up to him and say, dude, great job, because I
that was one of the guys. I was really concerned
about this year as a Portland State FCS transfer, and
he's been like the one guy who seems to be
more solid than the other offensive lineman. He's played almost
every snapping center this year and he's done a pretty
(27:03):
good job. So I think that there are some there
are some you know, green lights that are going off,
and there are some red lights that are going off
for this Husky football team. But I do think he
gets a little bit of a pass for year one.
If we're sitting here a year from now and this
offensive line is still getting shoved around right by Wisconsin
or Maryland or whoever, then we got a problem. Different story,
(27:26):
totally different story. But I think when you're doing something,
when you are inheriting something that's never been done before
in the history of college football, just because of that fact,
I think you have to give the guy a little
bit of a pass for a year one, of course,
in my opinion.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
And don't you think that both of our football teams
need to spend more on the offensive line totally. Bat's
where the money has got to go, right, You've got
to get I mean, you've got your quarterback, you think
you know, and as long as you don't get poached
by somebody else and you're just gonna take some money
to keep him. You've got skill position guys. You got
some guys in the back end of the defense that
you really really like. You got, you know, a guy

like House that you really really like at linebacker, and
you gotta get that offensive You gotta get offensive and
defensive lineman.

On this football team. You know, you know.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
I also love about Jedfish. You don't always, you don't
usually ever get coach speak like he Yeah, he almost speaks.
He almost has like the voice of the fans speaking
because I mean, we talked about it on Monday, right
how he's always right now this season, at this moment,
looking forward to next year in demand and the next
step in Husky football the offseason, nil, et cetera, et cetera.

Right Like, I don't know, as a fan, almost my
entire mindset is thinking about that already.

Why do you think I don't give it him about
a ball game. It's because of him.

Well, that's the idea. Is the idea is the possibility. Right.

And if you're Washington State and you're still thinking about
making the college football playoff after everybody has defecated and
urinated on your program, wow for years because the whole

Pac twelve thing and all that, right, I mean, that's
pretty darn impactful, and you got to give Jake Dickert
credit for getting them to eight and one. No mid
season loll. I'm sure you could say some of the
Mountain West teams they've played maybe aren't as good as
who they played last year, but these aren't bad teams.
And Boise punched him in the neck. But Boise's very,
very good and John Mattier has emerged as a great player.

But anyway, I have two games this weekend, so I
will not be traveling. But you know, but it makes
me think about this, the whole college football playoff thing
that you mentioned, and I've always gone back to that
this one weird statistic, even though I'm not a stat guy,
and it's that the more regions of the country that
(04:09):
are involved in college football, the longer the season goes on,
the better it is for the sport. So when Oregon
in the Chip Kelly days before they had this crazy,
weird developed offensive line and Auburn with Cam Newton played
against each other in the BCS title game in Glendale, Arizona,
(04:32):
sure that was and it was a pretty good game
and Oregon kind of almost came back.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Was that the Darren Thomas picking his nose game. Yeah, right, got.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
It that that game was the highest rated BCS championship game,
And like the whole endeavor, and you think about it,
like who lives in Eugene. Nobody. It's not a big
place and it looks like New York City compared to Auburn, Alabama,
(05:01):
which is a place I've been out on the planes.
So why was everybody involved? Why did everybody watch? Well
a big part of it was that it was a
whole country being involved, right, it wasn't Alabama versus LSU
for the third time in the season, or that's right.
So I think it's a good thing regardless of whether
or not the Cougs actually have a chance now. I mean, look,
(05:24):
they've done really well for themselves, and I'm happy for them.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I agree with you that it's enhanced the regular season.
And I remember getting into it with guys like Clat
back in the day, you know, like, what does he
really know about all? This is going to ruin the
regular season?
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Clad is great, but he thinks he thinks Lincoln Riley's
still going to come around.
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Well he's wrong about that, but he thought it was
going to ruin the regular season. And I think he's nuts.
I mean, looking like like Alabama any other year would
be done, they'd be finished right now. But they're staying
alive in their game with Oklahoma in a couple of weeks,
in the Auburn game, the iron Ball, this game with
New Mexico, and the Cougs SMU playing this weekend against
Boston College. Who would have given a damn about games
(06:04):
like that.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
I'm sure that nobody except for idiots like me, they
do games like that, right, But uh, you know, and
I respect everybody that we deal with in football, whether
they have a chance to make a championship yeah or not.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
That's not really true though. There's a lot of people
that you don't respect tons.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Well when we're actually working and doing the games and
not sitting here and farting around on the radio, you know,
I mean, you have to. You have to respect the
the endeavor that everybody's going through. Even though when you
strip it down to nothing, it's a bunch of guys
running around in plastic outfits, bunking into each other, ruining
their bodies while an older man screams inspirational words. It's

a little bit strange, I mean, is it's a little strange,
But you know what is just described it perfectly. It's football,
and we all cheer like in a stand. But it
is kind of interesting because I don't know if political
media people, although they seem even more despicable than the

sports media, and that's probably hard to do.

Wait, who's more despicable than sports media?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Political political media? But what I'm saying is I wonder if, like,
after a few decades, like you and I, you know,
how how tired you get of the predictability of your colleagues. Right,
so here we are in November, and of course, because
ESPN propagandizes their own product, which is the SEC and

the college Football Playoff, both of which belong to the
evil four letter, you're already starting to hear that bald
head lady, although I think she grew some hair, Heather Dinwich,
and then I always thought she had like a short
like a pixie haircut. And then and then fine Balm

and all the talking heads they aren't screaming about how
like a three loss SEC team belongs in the playoff
and a four loss SEC team I wouldn't ride them off.
And you know, everybody starts to push and push Indiana,
who have they played and all of that, and then
all the Fox people because they have the Big ten,
and CBS and NBC has a big ten, they're gonna

all speak up for the Big ten. And it's just
so predictable and annoying.

I don't see any pictures of Heather with short hair
at all.

I guess that's just how I saw it.

Probably? But you know, look, I'm a football analyst. I
call games. I do the whole deal. If I think
something's important enough to point out, I try to do it,
but I don't try to be dogmatic about it. And
I certainly am not trying to talk down to everybody
like they have no idea what could possibly be going
on out there. I mean, football is already confusing enough,

and you really can't know what any team is trying
to do unless you're really in their building or on
their headphones and all that, and even then you'll probably
have a hard time figuring it out. Right. The point
is just enjoy it for what it is, and if
something's important, if you think is important, convey it. But
beyond that, I mean, come on.

By the way, it wasn't Supergirl. It was Billy Jean
with Helen Slater with the short hair. Hey, how concerned
should I be about the uh Deshaun Foster led Bruins
coming to town Friday?
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Very you know? I look, I've we've made some fun
of Deshaun Foster in town and on this show, and
I gotta say, of course, they did not look good
to start the season. And I would equate this with
another team that I'm doing this week, the Houston Cougars.
Right coach by Willi Fritz now Willi Fritz.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
I just like the way that you say the name
Willy Fritz.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Willi Fritz was the last Chance you guy. And then
he was at Georgia Southern, and then he was at Tulane.
He won that Sugar Bowl, beat Caleb Williams at Tulane.
And he's doing this. He's not a young man, he's
not an old guy, but he's doing this because he
wants to see if his system will work at the
(10:52):
highest level in the power for and he's at Houston,
and it's a pretty good stop for him because of
just the type of player he's had success with and
the type of players Houston brings. Anyway, they started the
year and they were terrible. They lost to UNLV, they
didn't even compete. They had a couple games where they
didn't score a point and it was very bad, and
(11:15):
people were making fun of them and talking bad, kind
of like we did about Deshan Foster. And Houston's won
a couple straight beat Utah, who's a well coached team.
They beat Kansas State, who's ranked who was ranked like
sixteen or seventeen at the time, and suddenly everybody seems
to know what they're doing. They've batten down the hatches
(11:38):
and figured out an identity offensively and defensively. They're running
the ball, they're not making mistakes, and that's like UCLA.
That's exactly UCLA's won three straight into Big Ten. They've
been physical, they've cut down on their mistakes, they've cut
down on getting the quarterback sacked, and they're running the
ball with anger, with a really good tailback named TJ.
(12:00):
Harden out of Inglewood who does not waste a lot
of motion. And I would expect Willie Fritz to have
it figured out right, because Willi Fritz is a veteran
coach who's completely and totally self sufficient. All of his
assistants have come with him, they've coached with him at
(12:20):
all kinds of different places, even places where they had
to worry about doing the laundry and being the team
the team ustritionists and things like that. Now that's not
the case with Deshaun Dashawn is a first year coach.
The job kind of fell in his lap because the
relationship with Chip Kelly and the AD was mismanaged by
(12:43):
both of those men. He ended up with whatever staff
he ended up with, but it happened late, and everybody
was kind of caught with their pants down. And yet
he's been able to convey a message, get players to
lock arms and continue working even when you're not winning,
and when you're being attacked from the outside people saying
you're not gonna win a conference game to the thirty
(13:04):
first of February and all that, and they've all figured
out how to take steps forward together and make the
football season look better. They're probably gonna get Bowl eligible, right,
They're probably going to beat USC's ass. And I think
Deshaun Foster and the ad who seems a little bit
(13:25):
like a blow hard, but the ad, Martin Jarman, they
deserve a lot of credit. They deserve a ton of credit. Now.
Of course, if they go up there and lose, and
they lose to Fresno and lose to sc or lose
you know, two or two or three of the next four,
then it's all just this little burp will be a
fart in a whirlwind and Deshaun will have to rebuild
(13:46):
for next season.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
They had three games left against five win you dub,
four win u S and five win Fresno, Right, so
it's certainly possible they can do it. Did you watch
the penns Day game at all Saturday?
Speaker 2 (13:57):
I know you guys got run over.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
Well, it was like, did you ever see the movie
Hancock with Will Smith?
Speaker 2 (14:02):
No, I don't. I try to avoid Will Smith. He
called and cussed me out at the station once. Really
it was Chris Rock, but long before him. Wow, I
was gonna say they hate for Will Smith as pre
Chris Rock.
Speaker 4 (14:13):

I attacked him for remaking the Karate Kid and putting
his kid in it.

And what did he do?

Oh, I've seen people actually try to do that.

It was It was a disaster. But they played Demon
Williams the entire second. They benched Will Rogers for the
second half, and they played the eighteen year old Frenchman
And now a lot of people want to see more.
But j had starting Will Rogers again Friday versus UCLA.
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Somebody made an interesting point to me because Houston is
playing Arizona and they think, yeah, they lost a lot
of players on the offensive line. I don't know if
Dino Babers is being very well received as the play caller.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
They lost a lot of players on the offensive line.
We lost everybody.
Speaker 2 (15:23):
Yeah, I mean they lost like before the season even started,
you know what I mean. They thought they had people
the right, right, right, and then they've lost their three
best defenders, you know, the whole brains of the outfit,
and they're really struggling. But it's interesting because Arizona's were
Fish left and they got Brent Brennan, who I like
a lot from San Jose, and everybody in Arizona's miserable
(15:47):
with Brennan. I don't think people are exactly thrilled.
Speaker 3 (15:52):
Is that a commentary though, on the job that Jed
did down there, that hey, he takes off and look
at Fafeeda's numbers, look at McMillan's numbers.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
Well yeah, but and like just shift the world and
you go up to Washington. Nobody at Washington's pleased with
Fish really right now, especially after they just saw their own.
Speaker 3 (16:09):

That's an interesting question that we might actually broke.

But think of it then there and then think people
at Alabama that geeked up about Debor.

You know, he's on a week to week thing, fighting
for his life because he's replacing a legend. You know,
it's a very interesting shift. The only school that's happy
is San Jose State because they kept both of Brennan's
coordinators mcgiven and Odum and ken Nea Montalolo's bawl eligible Yeah,
you know, I'm proud of the Spartan. So it's kind
(16:43):
of an interesting shift in the world where no one
is happy with where they went. You know, in the
current moment.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Let me let me ask you before you go, because
I do want to I do want to get serious
here for a second, bring the room down a little
bit and just get your thoughts on the passing of
John Robinson, Oh.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
My old coach. Yeah, he was something else. He was
a great coach and really you know, and he did
something that's almost impossible to do. What a segue, because
we just talked about what Caleb de boor our friend
is trying to do in Tuscaloosa. John McKay is one
of the most legendary coaches in the history of college football,
(17:21):
and around the time he retired, you could say he
was as revered as Nick Saban. He didn't retire. He
went to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be there a
head coach of the new franchise. But when he left USC,
I should say in the seventies, John Robinson did the impossible.
He continued the legacy. He took over and won a
(17:42):
national championship, and won four Rose Bowls, and had Charles
White and so on and so forth, all those guys.
So I mean, that's just the way back history of
John Robinson. Forget the fact that he took the Rams
to a bunch of NFC title games back in those
days where they just couldn't get over the hump of
the Bears or the forty nine ers. But Jim Everett,
(18:04):
Eric Dickerson, Henry Ellard, Flipper Anderson, those were great teams.
And then there's so many tentacles to the guy's life.
He was a big innovator of offensive run game football,
like we take for granted. You know, the tight end,
standing up, stepping back into the backfield, waving the receiver
(18:25):
on the line of scrimmage, and then going in the motion.
All those different things zip zap motion, the full back
going week or strong off the I formation. All that
stuff was Joe Gibbs John Robinson developed at USC North
Turner in those days. He was a master teacher of
the run game and a great players coach. I think
(18:46):
he loved USC more than USC loved him, which is
kind of a sad thing. The way that developed. He
was the eight. If UNLV wasn't playing the way they
are now, he'd be their best coach of the modern air.
He did okay there, and no one's ever done okay
there other than Harvey Hyde when he had Randall Cunningham.
(19:08):
So he was a legend at UNLV and beloved there
for what he did, and ed Ogeron took great care
of him, even though they didn't make a connection at USC.
It was Paul Hackett that hired ed ed Ogeron, hired
him as a special assistant and brought him along for
the ride in those very special times at LSU, specifically
the greatest college football season ever where they went undefeated
(19:30):
with Joe Burrow, So he was really something else to
play for, and he had a command over the room
as a communicator. I think you've heard him speak before. Yeah,
that was very very I mean, to be coached by
that guy when you're a teenager is pretty impressive, pretty amazing.
(19:52):
And I just do remember I told this story a
couple of times my first meeting at USC. Everybody was
in the room going crazy, you know that. It was
like the scene and lean on me right before he
kicked everybody out of school, right, just chaos in the
gym and everybody just hush, comes down and he walks
in front of the room and he would always give
(20:14):
it a good fifteen seconds so you could admire his
outfit Jesus, sandals, sands, a belts, tucked in to a
button down, flowery nylon shirt, chest, hair out, gold chains,
California tan, slick back hair, gold bracelet, gold rings. Ye
looking sweet yep. And the first thing he said was,
(20:36):
if you have a gun, leave it at home. I
don't want him walk a room he's got a gun. Jesus.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
With that, I'm thinking about jar Jar Binks.

Just the was a lot like that. He was very nix.
He was very Nicksonian. It is deliberate.

is so much larger than the just going to approve

the verge of not making a bowl game, and they

that extent, this is a team that was in the
National Championship last year, and people's standards now are maybe.

people that are not happy with Jedfish for whatever reason,

don't hear from people. And we've said this many times,
Dick been doing this for a long time, like sixty
combined years. People don't text the radio station. Hey, I

great game by right? That just doesn't happen. That's like
the nature of the people that interact with the radio station.

I was like, geeze, dude, well, I mean, I mean,
it's a good question. But that's what that's what people are,
and you know that's what that's what gets them excited.
Like for example, when you went you know what. I
had the same conversation with a buddy of mine the
other day who's pissed off at the news. Can't stand
the news, doesn't watch the news because all the news
does is report the one thing out of one hundred

that's a negative. Like how many times do you flip
on King Cairo Como Fox thirteen? Whatever the news tonight?
Somebody went to school and got home safe right, or
somebody got into a car and there was no accent,
never getting We don't hear about the ten thousand cars
that were on the road where nothing happened. You hear
about the one car that was on the road that

got into it freaking wreck. I think, so that's the
nature of this business.

Well, I think if there are people out there that
are adamantly opposed to jadfish, then I don't think a
jedfish ever had a chance with them because I would
just simply ask them, what did you expect?
Speaker 3 (25:53):
Well, let's get some time. I mean, did you expect
you expect ten and two in a playoff spot?
Speaker 4 (25:58):
This year.

I mean, is that really what you exc I didn't
you know, so what I expected? Yeah, you expected six
sweats seven. I expected six and six or seven and five. Yeah,
I thought.
Speaker 5 (26:08):
I thought they'd go seven and five or six and six,
but I thought seven and five. And they're not going
to get the seven and five, but they can still
get the six and six. And you know, six and
six is not great by any stretch of the imagination.
But considering the circumstances, that's why our expectations were so
modest this year.
Speaker 3 (26:21):
Because of the circumstance. I just think he gets a
little bit of a pass for year one because of
the personnel he's dealing with, you know, no offensive line,
and look, I'll be honest with you. I was out
there yesterday and they trotted out Cam Davis, Giles, Jackson, DiAngelo,
Titi ali Is the offensive players, then brought in three
defensive guys. But I had to take off and go
(26:42):
talk to Cam for the pregame show, so I couldn't stay.
But I'm looking at D'Angelo and I wanted to walk
up to him and say, dude, great job, because I
that was one of the guys. I was really concerned
about this year as a Portland State FCS transfer, and
he's been like the one guy who seems to be
more solid than the other offensive lineman. He's played almost
every snapping center this year and he's done a pretty
(27:03):
good job. So I think that there are some there
are some you know, green lights that are going off,
and there are some red lights that are going off
for this Husky football team. But I do think he
gets a little bit of a pass for year one.
If we're sitting here a year from now and this
offensive line is still getting shoved around right by Wisconsin
or Maryland or whoever, then we got a problem. Different story,
(27:26):
totally different story. But I think when you're doing something,
when you are inheriting something that's never been done before
in the history of college football, just because of that fact,
I think you have to give the guy a little
bit of a pass for a year one, of course,
in my opinion.
Speaker 5 (27:39):
And don't you think that both of our football teams
need to spend more on the offensive line totally. Bat's
where the money has got to go, right, You've got
to get I mean, you've got your quarterback, you think
you know, and as long as you don't get poached
by somebody else and you're just gonna take some money
to keep him. You've got skill position guys. You got
some guys in the back end of the defense that
you really really like. You got, you know, a guy
(28:00):
like House that you really really like at linebacker, and
you gotta get that offensive You gotta get offensive and
defensive lineman.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
On this football team. You know, you know.
Speaker 4 (28:08):
I also love about Jedfish. You don't always, you don't
usually ever get coach speak like he Yeah, he almost speaks.
He almost has like the voice of the fans speaking
because I mean, we talked about it on Monday, right
how he's always right now this season, at this moment,
looking forward to next year in demand and the next
step in Husky football the offseason, nil, et cetera, et cetera.
(28:28):
Right Like, I don't know, as a fan, almost my
entire mindset is thinking about that already.
Speaker 3 (28:34):
Why do you think I don't give it him about
a ball game. It's because of him.

It's fair.

He's making me not care about a ball I think a.

Lot of fans are just naturally of that mindset too.
So I love the fact that our head coach is
of that kind of fan mindset already.
