Bears were down to their fourth string quarterback in that game,
which I think might be the case for a lot
of teams.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Vanderbook quarterback Diego Pavilla has been granted an extra year
of eligibility. That is huge, by the way, because it
opens up the floodgates for junior college players to all
get four years of eligibility in college football instead of two.
So somebody get Battius Dixon a lawyer, and let's file
a suit and get that guy back next year.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Right. A forty year.
Speaker 5 (01:19):
Old creep has pleaded guilty the stalking Yukon star Page
Beckers and has received one year suspended sentence in three

regarding the Seahawks. Uh, Kenny Walker and Zach Sharbonay did
not practice guys yesterday, right You already knew that Zach
Sharbonay limited participation today.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Kenny walker full go at practice.
Speaker 4 (02:57):
T let's go box.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
That is phenomenal. Phenomenal news for the Seahawks. Well, phenomenal
news for us is he somehow, some way just keeps
agreeing to come back here.
Speaker 4 (03:06):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Every single Thursday.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
I just think there's gonna be a day where we
show up and he just doesn't want to be here.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
But that day's not today.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Next Thursday.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Yeah, yeah, we're off next Thursday.
Speaker 4 (03:15):
Oh we are here, we are.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
I was gonna come, well, come on in, go ahead.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
You guys won't be here.
Speaker 3 (03:18):
No. No.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
You never see the movie Goodwill Hunting with Matt Damon
and Ben af Flack number at the end when they
go to pick up Damon and he's just not there yea,
and Ben Afflack knows.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
You know there's gonna be a day where I'm gonna
go to your house and you won't be there.
Speaker 2 (03:32):
I just keep waiting for that day to show up
where you figure it out and you don't come.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
But we appreciate you being to your man.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
And I before we talk Hawks, before we talk about
that great injury report for the Seahawks and the running
back situation, I could feel your blood boiling during that
headline there where I talked about all the players that
are leaving the school, entering the portal and quitting on
their teams before the playoff and before the bull game
even starts.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
You would go bananas if you were right now.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
Yeah, I don't get it. You know, all the changes
in college football, I say, shame on them. Whoever. Whoever, However,
I know the players deserve some money. I know all that,
but it's this is border on the ridiculous. I think, no, really,
there's a there's a team want somebody couldn't play in
the bowl game. Some team had the they Marshall, marsh Marshall,
(04:25):
you know, I mean, come on, you know, and then
then they wait, they wait, they wait, and like you said,
watching a state, listen, even if you're like you guys
are dying will Husky guys, that's a shame. It is
a shame, losing their coach, losing all those players, losing people. No,
it's it's I don't get it. I don't like it,
(04:47):
but it's the way of the world right now now.
Speaker 5 (04:49):
The Wazoo AD said today that they had a player
votes and the players voted to allow those that are
transferring to be able to play in the Bowl game.
So I mean is that would you if you were
a teammate, would you would you play?
Speaker 3 (05:03):
Would you vote for the players to play the Bowl game?
Time out? What do you want? You want more head set?
Speaker 4 (05:07):
You want good? I just want to hear. I couldn't hear.
I was trying to read his lips.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Nobody is better at doing sign language without knowing sign
language than you.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
It's unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (05:16):
But I'm sorry I interrupted what you were saying.
Speaker 3 (05:18):
No, just I mean, how would you vote?
Speaker 5 (05:20):
Would you let a teammate years it's leaving, would you
would you vote to let him play with you for
one last game?
Speaker 4 (05:26):
You know what? I I think I think the players
all understand the players better than we do. Yeah, you know,
because if the player leaves, I'm assuming he's leaving for
a better situation. You'd think you would think, you know,
like coaches, coach don't just leave. I think Dickert as
an ample. We were talking about wake Forest. You know,
one of the things is he's going to make a
(05:46):
lot more money, right, That's that's one thing. You know,
you get a big increase in salary. The thing that
I always quitted when I left Green Bay to come
to the Seahawks. You go, why'd you do that? Why
did you do that? You had far why'd you do that? Well,
my job change, you know. I was no longer just
a coach. I had more responsibility. It was a it
was a step up, I thought, right, And it wasn't
(06:07):
It wasn't just about money. It wasn't just about those things. Now,
if you go from one college, Washington State to Wake Forest,
why why are you doing that? Why? You know, because
you get a chance to play in a different conference,
but you're not you're not strong in that conference. You're
not one of the powers in that conference. And then
(06:27):
it's because you're gonna get probably get a sizeable increase
in pay.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Yeah, well, no, for sure. And look, there's no easy
way to do this obviously.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
I mean, we talked about the comments he was making
that Cougar fans are all mad about about loyalty and
all that stuff. But I just kind of feel like,
I mean, if you're the coach or the coach until
you're not right.
Speaker 4 (06:44):
I mean, and you know, I've heard everyone should all
to play a clip when he was crying after the
Washington after the Washington game, and he was very emotional,
and he just kind of loved You heard that. I
heard that. Anybody listened to it, said, man, this guy
is the best. He cares about his players, he cares
about his team. Then fast forward it a couple months
(07:05):
or a month or whatever, and he's leaving right. I
believe he was sincere what he was acting. That was real.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
Absolutely, that was real.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
And now the dust has settled just a little bit,
so you know. But having said all that, I do
not like it. I don't like the way college football
is now.
Speaker 5 (07:24):
Have we postponed the game on Sunday night long enough?
Should we now talk about what we witnessed? The greatest
part of the game, Coach, was the open with you
firing up the Packers and the Seahawks fans on Sunday
Night football, and then we saw three hours of.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Just what was that?
Speaker 5 (07:40):
I don't think the Seahawks are seventeen points worse than
the Packers, but they certainly were that night at least
seventeen points worse, if not more than that.
Speaker 3 (07:48):
Yeah, what happened in your mind?
Speaker 4 (07:49):
Well, there was just a Packer. Packers are a good
football team and the Seahawks have had issues this season
with good football teams. Buffalo, Green Bay, different team like that.
They've beaten teams that are more on their level right now,
but to their credit, they've won those games. But the
Packers just started off. They were just hitting it, and
(08:11):
the Seahawks couldn't stop the run. You know, they made
a point earlier. I was reading something where you know,
Mike letch to move around the defensive guys, you know,
to confuse the offense.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Well, the Packers just went on quick counts and just
came after him. They caught him in bad positions and
they got him on their heels. They just got him
on their heels and they couldn't recover. But it was
that very very fast start. Yeah, that was it. Then
the bad interception, so they.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
They brought remind me, they brought Sam Howell. And when
it was twenty to six, is that right, Dick?
Speaker 3 (08:44):
I believe it's two. You know, got hurt.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
They're down twenty to six, seven or nine, third quarter,
and they throwed twelve consecutive times, or they were going
to throw. He got sacked on some of them and
scrambled on some others, but he was dropping back to
pass on twelve straight through the next run was the
touchdown by Zach Charbonay, and then I believe they didn't
run again the.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
Rest of the game.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
So there's a lot of people coming down on Ryan
Grubb again, just a weekly thing where it's like, what
are you doing?
Speaker 3 (09:11):
Man?
Speaker 2 (09:12):
How come you're not running the ball? Why are you
throwing the ball so much? I mean, let me just
go back. First of all, if you had a backup
quarterback in Sam Howe down fourteen, would you feel like, Hey,
I've got to run the ball to protect this guy,
or no, we're down fourteen, let's try to win the game.
Speaker 4 (09:26):
I wouldn't say I've got to throw the run the
ball every snap to protect the quarterback. But you do
have to understand he hasn't played and all of a
sudden he's coming in against a pretty good defense. How
can I help him in my play calling? I think
you got to think about that stuff and to throw
the ball on twelve consecutive plays, you know, And I
(09:46):
look at it. Ryan Grubb's a good coach, he's a
smart guy. But I don't think i'd approach it that way,
and in fact, I know I wouldn't because when hassel
Bit got hurt, we weren't very good. Hear the end
of the year. You know, Seneca Wallas is playing where
any backup quarterback is playing. Yeah, you've got to help
him because he hasn't played yet this year. It's new.
(10:08):
I mean, and as you say, well he's practiced, well
he hasn't. He's been the scout team, right, he's the
he's the opposing quarterback. You're not running your stuff, you know.
So no, that was that was surprising.
Speaker 5 (10:21):
I think the biggest talking point coming out of the
game was more so what happened in the stands than
what happened on the field.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
I mean, go, Pack go.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
Was it like ninety five decibels in that building? So
take us back to when you were coaching both at
Lambeau and a at I guess it was Century Link
Field back then or Quest Field back then. Do you
remember ever a big infiltration of road fans at either
one of those stadiums?
Speaker 4 (10:49):
I do, Dick, you know, right when, right when the
new stadium was built, when we left your versi of
Washington and came our first couple of years there. Okay,
you could see a lot of different colored uniforms and
jerseys in the stands. If you remember the cost of
the seat. The tickets were high, but then the personal
(11:10):
seat licenses, so it was really high. And so yeah,
there was a there was a time there that it
wasn't balanced then. But then when we got to be
pretty good and Toddler Winkey came in and said, okay,
the twelves, it was his. He he started that ball rolling,
and and then we got to be good. And then
(11:31):
so Sunday, no one wanted to come in and play
at our place. Nobody. And you didn't hear what I heard.
I'm watching the TV the other night, and I'm hearing that.
I'm going this is this is a seal comb game.
That shouldn't that shouldn't be like that.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Bother the players to hear that.
Speaker 4 (11:51):
That's a good question, Dave. I don't think so. But
they noticed it. I think you can't. You got to
be deaf not you notice it. And you might say, hey,
come on, this is our place, you know.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Well, I mean, look, I get why fans sell tickets.
Dick and I have gone back and forth on all this.
There's a lot of variables involved here. Tickets are expensive,
playoff tickets are expensive, and you've got a chance to
make a lot of your money back all that stuff.
But does it fall on the team eventually? I mean,
Dick and I are debating. I think it's on the team.
Speaker 3 (12:21):
Right.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
You're sixteen and seventeen in your last thirty three games
at home, You're getting your ass kicked at your home park.
Speaker 3 (12:27):
You're kind of a boring team, as we've said.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
You've talked about them being kind of unlikable in some ways.
I think it's on I mean, it's a business, right.
I believe it's on them to motivate people. It's on
them to get people to want to be there on
game day. A m I barking up the wrong tree here.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
I think I think there is a lot of truth
to that. You know, they expectations from the fans. You
go into a season. Last year they didn't make the playoffs,
and but the feeling was this year, maybe not go
all the way to the super Bowl, but they were
going to be better. You know, we're going to improve this.
(13:03):
You got to basically got a new coach. I was exciting,
a good young guy, and it's kind of it's kind
of business as usual a little bit right now. But
it's a new coach. It's I get that. I'm I'm
not gonna I'm I don't. I'm not gonna go in
there and root for the other game. You know. But
but if expectations the Seahawks are were good under Repete
(13:26):
for a long time. We were pretty good when I
was coaching there. And that's what people got to feel
like what they what they could envision, right, maybe a
shot at the Super Bowl, getting into the playoffs, those
kinds of things.
Speaker 5 (13:38):
But there's still enough Seahawks fans out there that want
to be Seahawks season ticket holders that you could have
seventy thousand Seahawks fans in that game. And some franchises
in other sports, it may happen in the NFL, I'm
not sure, but I know in Europe they do this
where if the franchise will flag season ticket holders that
(13:59):
that can consistently resell their seats, they flag them and
then the next year they say, Nope, you cannot buy
your tickets anymore because you're selling your tickets.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Is that something the Seahawks should take a look at.
Speaker 4 (14:11):
Well, let's I don't know, you know, in the NFL,
if I don't think they can do that, you know,
in Green Bay as an example, you aren't. You're on
a waiting list to get tickets forever, forever, forever, forty years,
and all of a sudden you get a chance to
buy a ticket. Yeah, you know, and certain stadiums are
(14:32):
like that. In Cleveland when I was there, not as
a coach but as an executive, their fans they hadn't
been good for a while. You know, they struggle, but
their fans are something. I mean, I got to say this.
They are loyal, yes, and they are something. And so
I'm very surprised when I heard go Back Go on
(14:53):
the TV. Yeah, I was going, Kathy, listen to that.
What's going on? You know?
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Yeah, well, look, I mean we may see a lot
of that against Sunday. I mean, there's gonna be a
lot of Viking fans in the house as well this weekend.
A lot of Viking fans live for a lot of
Viking fans travel here to places like Seattle. But when
you start looking at like the playoff scenarios and things
like that, this feels like kind of a must win
game for the Hawks this weekend. Do you kind of
approach games differently when you're getting down this close to
(15:21):
the end of the year and you feel like, all right,
our margin for error is really kind of getting nail here.
Speaker 4 (15:25):
Yeah, I don't know. The approach is probably the same.
But do you make sure the players know what's at stake? Yes?
Speaker 3 (15:32):
You did?
Speaker 4 (15:33):
I put did I squeeze the assistant coaches and push
a little harder? Yes? Yeah, you know, because the game.
Everyone has to understand what this game is about. And
you can say, well, it's another game. We treat every
game the same way. You don't. You get to a
certain point when it's this your batcher against the wall
and this you either get it or you don't, right,
(15:55):
And they have to understand.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
That when it comes to you and Iron cahoots on
and when they get to the right situation being a
lot better and versus just the amount of talent you
have as a quarterback. Sam Donald might be the most
perfect example of that of any quarterback in the last
five years. What do you make of what you've seen
from the Viking Donald versus.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
The Jet Darnald Well, Dick, You couldn't have said it better.
I coming out of college when he was in college
at Sea, he was lights out. It was good, really good. Uh.
Then then all of a sudden you go where we
go to the Jets. Yeah, yes, yeah, well, you know,
I kind of rest my case achieve in Christmas. You know,
you you it's but if you get into a situation
(16:40):
and you are asked to play right away and the
situation itself isn't good, right, you don't it's you're not
gonna look great, right, and all of a sudden, you
start to doubt your you know, it plays with your
mind just a little bit. He was used to success,
he was used to winning games. He was used to
all sorts of stuff. Then all of a sudden, it's
not happening, and you go, shoot, maybe I'm not Maybe
(17:02):
I'm not the superstar. I thought it was, you know,
but now I watched a little bit of the Minnesota
game the other night. He throws the ball great, he's
a good passer. Yeah, and you know, he made one
bad decision on an interception, but I was impressed. And
that's how he's playing this year.
Speaker 3 (17:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
And the other thing I would say, I don't know him,
but Minnesota's coaching. He's a young guy, too good. I
like him a lot, Yeah, because he seems poised, he
seems smart. You know, he's got him going.
Speaker 3 (17:33):
Yeah, Donald's twenty seven years old. Yeah, we think he's
like thirty two, right.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
He's gonna this is his seventh year in the NFL already. Yeah, so,
and he's a free agent when the year's over. I mean,
I assume that Vikings will try to get something done
or franchise him.
Speaker 3 (17:46):
But they got J. J.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
McCarthy's sitting there. It was going to be their starting
quarterback and he blew his knee out. Yes, So what
do you do if you're the Vikings and he got
this first round quarterback and he got Sam Darnold, do
you just maybe franchise him for a year, give them
a little two year deal while the kid kind of
learns his way around the NFL. How do you manage
the Donald versus McCarthy thing they're in right now?
Speaker 4 (18:07):
That's a tough one. That's a tough one because you know,
Day got McCarthy as the quarterback of the future, right
and Donald. I think they viewed it as a you know,
a temper is a you know, yeah, cern him in
for a couple of years.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
If they've got five quarterbacks on their roster, including Daniel
Jones is on their practice squad, so they just.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
Signed all these guys to just see what would stick. Yeah,
well McCarthy's learning the game.
Speaker 4 (18:30):
Yeah no, but but Donald, you got it. After the
season he's had, they'd be, in my opinion, right, they'd
be foolish not to franchise him or keep him around
for another year.
Speaker 3 (18:40):
Yeah, well let's come back, and yeah, let's come back.
Speaker 2 (18:42):
Talk about with the game on Sunday, the running back
situation with Walker and Sharbonnay both practicing today. Gino's got
the knee, right, we'll talk about kind of how you
manage through that.
Speaker 3 (18:51):
If you're Ryan Grubb.
Speaker 2 (18:52):

Speaker 3 (19:25):
You got a favorite Christmas song or a Christmas artist or.
Speaker 4 (19:28):
Uh no, Harry Bellefonte, There you go, yeah, there you go.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Yeah, this is is this the Andy? What's his name?
Speaker 4 (19:36):
Williams.
Speaker 3 (19:37):
Yeah, this is the Andy Williams version, right.
Speaker 4 (19:39):
Yeah, yeah, he's okay.
Speaker 3 (19:40):
Did Big Pop and the Choppers do Christmas Carols?
Speaker 4 (19:43):
No? They did, No, No, we did.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
Uh No.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
It was all Sean and a stuff.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
And members around by the way.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
No, you know what, big Bop. I just went to
this memorial service this last summer.
Speaker 3 (19:58):
I thought you were a big bop.
Speaker 4 (19:59):
No, I w some one of the Choppers.
Speaker 5 (20:03):
It was Big Bopper in the Choppers, not Big popa
in the Chop big Bop, big Bob yeah, big bop.
Speaker 4 (20:07):
Yeah, it was really good. He was the head football coach.
He was a head football coach. Yeah, and I was
a Chopper. I was the offensive coordinator.
Speaker 3 (20:14):
Guy's ever thought about a reunion tour getting together?
Speaker 4 (20:16):
You know they did without me? Really yeah, but they
were old and did last. Wow. I don't want to
say that. I don't want to say they needed.
Speaker 3 (20:23):
Me that they do need you.
Speaker 5 (20:23):
Well.
Speaker 3 (20:24):
Did you have to sing harmony or did you ever
get sing melody? Or is that always bop?
Speaker 2 (20:27):
No?
Speaker 4 (20:27):
I've sang harmony, except I had five songs that I sang.
Speaker 2 (20:30):
Really, I want to serenade us right now a little
bit nice, give us something come on as our is
our little Christmas gift.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
And you were very generous by the way with that
NIST gift.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
Because I get paid. I'm like a transferport.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
I got a hundred bucks. Well, my congrids with us.
Let's talk about Geno. First of all, he's gonna play
on Sunday. Took all the snaps with the number ones.
But he's obviously gonna have some kind of embrace, or
maybe he doesn't.
Speaker 3 (20:56):
He's got the knee injury.
Speaker 2 (20:57):
Obviously, do you need to call the game differently if
you're Ryan Grubb? And more importantly, if you're the Vikings
and you're a defensive coach or a defensive player, you
know this guy's got an injury. Do you kind of
ratchet it up a little bit more? If you're going
after the opposing quarterback.
Speaker 4 (21:12):
Well, you know, I don't think I trust that won't happen.
You're gonna you're gonna hit the quarterback, right, But I
don't think they're gonna do anything. I would hope not. Yeah,
they're not coached by Greg Williams.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
You know.
Speaker 4 (21:27):
Remember Bounty Gates.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
Well, you know who their DC is at Minnesota, Brian
flores O the DC.
Speaker 4 (21:34):
Yeah, no, so, but I think Gino, I gotta see
how he's playing. I I've told you the story before
far wrecked his ankle, wrecked his ankle, right, and then
he couldn't play. We couldn't practice all week, and so
I was getting the backup ready to play. And he
comes to me with the training staff and said, I
(21:55):
can go.
Speaker 3 (21:56):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (21:56):
I said, you didn't practice all week. What happened to miracle?
What happened? Now I can go? I said, okay, all right,
But if I think you're at risk, if I see
anything out there that you you know, then I'm pulling
you out of the game. And I don't want you
to look weird at me. I just want you to
walk out and sit down. And he goes okay, and
he threw five touchdown passes against the bearss ha ha
(22:19):
because he couldn't do all the crazy stuff right. If
you go back and just do right, I said, see
see how it works, you know. But if Gino goes
out there and you see that he's you know, the
knee's not helping him. Yeah, but they don't have the
plan B isn't a good one, and the gut r
win this game.
Speaker 3 (22:38):
You know what sorry, Dick did her up.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
But let me just ask it outside of the obvious,
which if he's lipping around, how do you know how
do you know if you're McDonald and Ryan Grubb that
Gino's knee is is it the plant leg is at
the blosses?
Speaker 3 (22:50):
How do you know that he's not right?
Speaker 4 (22:51):
It's all that You're gonna watch it and you can
see you can just watch it now. I don't think
they put him in. It's like and he's gonna have
to make a decision about mahomes correct, right, you know.
And I think he's in a little worse shape than
Geno really so. But you look out there and you
can see is he's falling through what's does he favoring
the leg? Is he missing trose he should make because
of that, you can tell, and then then you have
(23:14):
to make your choice.
Speaker 3 (23:16):
Coach.
Speaker 5 (23:16):
I am so tired of watching the Seahawks kickoff return
team return into the twenty two, the twenty three, the
twenty six and not get to the thirty, which is
what you would get if you just caught the damn
ball in the end zone and had a touch back.
And also even if it goes short of the end
zone if it bounces and rolls out of the back
of the end zone, which they would ninety percent of
the time. Anyway, you're kicking from sixty five yards away.
(23:36):
It also goes to the thirty yard life. What would
you tell your special teams coach when you just consistently
see your team giving up three four five yards every
single kickoff?
Speaker 4 (23:46):
Yeah, no, then you have to make a decision and
change how you think. You know, if you say, okay,
I got a I got a returner that's just out
of sight, he's really awesome, which we don't. Yeah, and
all of a sudden you poplin or you hit a cup.
Then you stay with it. But all of a suddenly,
if like you said, if it doesn't happen, and it
doesn't happen ever, yes, then sea start from the thirties.
(24:09):
You watch teams. There are a lot of teams that
do that. They just let them all go yeah, they
go yeah, or they touching, don't cry.
Speaker 2 (24:15):
Right, Well, this team they I just won't even put
anybody back there. Yeah, I way, nobody can fuck it up.
Speaker 5 (24:20):
Right, Well, somebody's got to be that active down in
the case it lands.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
At the five. Whole thing is just embarrassing how they're
just so bad at that.
Speaker 2 (24:25):
You know they've gone, they're cutting players right and left,
and they still can't figure it out. But uh, today
Kenny Walker full go Zach Charboney Limited, which is great
news for those guys. Tell me about that, tell me
about Ryan Grubb getting those guys back. And let's just
live in a world for a second where he doesn't
have them and he's got Kenny McIntosh.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Do you still not change the game plan at all?
Speaker 2 (24:48):
We're gonna try to pound the ball with our third
string guy, or is there a point on the depth
chart where you can get into Mike Rehre're like, hey,
we'd like to run the ball, but we just can't.
Speaker 4 (24:56):
Well, you know I've been there, and you know, yes,
you guys tease me about it. But the uh excuse me,
the uh no, Kenny mcintalk or excuse me, Kenny Walker
is a certain type of back. Sharbernet is a certain
type of back. When now there's a reason you have
with your third back. Is it the same? No, it's
not the same. Now do you abandon it totally? No? No,
(25:19):
you see, you test it out and see what's happening
in the game because you do need some balance. You
do need to run the ball a little right, you know,
during the ball game. But then if it's not working,
you gotta do other things. I you know, I equate
it with going to the West Coast offense. Throw a
pass is gonna get your five yards, six yards?
Speaker 3 (25:39):
Do it?
Speaker 4 (25:39):
That's okay, Now you're second and four. It wasn't a run.
It was a pass, but it was like a run,
you know, and that's you can get first downs and
things like that, particularly when you have guys injured.
Speaker 5 (25:51):
Why is Gino so adept at advancing them all from
the thirty yard line to the opponent's twenty and then
it just all goes though.
Speaker 4 (25:56):
No, that's a good question. I think to go with
the game. And you guys know this. The game changes.
When you get to the twenty, you get squeezed. You
can't have the threat of a deep throw, so the
safeties that they can crowd you a little bit. The
field changes, so how you operate changes, and that transition
you got to be you got to know what that is.
(26:18):
You know, I told you a million times. I love
the red zone stuff. That was one of my favorite
things to coach, and we got to be pretty you know,
the players understood it. It was different. It's different than
when you get the ball back on your own thirty. Yeah,
it's just a different game down there, right.
Speaker 2 (26:34):
But you've seen quarterbacks that are good in the red zone.
You've seen quarterbacks that are bad the rights zone. Yes,
generally the quarterbacks that are bad in the red zone.
Speaker 3 (26:41):
Why are they bad?
Speaker 4 (26:43):
I think a couple of reasons. I think one, they
try and they try and shoot for the end zone
every single time. Yeah, they don't quite understand. You have
young guys that don't quite understand the dynamics of that
part of the field, and that takes some time to
learn that. But for a veteran, Gino's played long enough
now that you know, you just got to be careful
(27:07):
down there and understand this. Three points is okay. Three
points is okay, and it's not a failure if you
kick field goals. Now, if you're behind by twenty one
points or twenty eight, you know, then you might take
some chances. But you can't turn the ball over down there.
You cannot. You can't get down there and not get
(27:29):
any points.
Speaker 5 (27:29):
Yeah, your guy, Andy Reid, says, Patrick mahonans most likely
will play this week.
Speaker 3 (27:35):
You know, he's got that that ankle thing.
Speaker 5 (27:37):
But they had a game Sunday, and then a game Saturday,
and then.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
A game Wednesday. I mean, eleft ten days for three
games to be played.
Speaker 5 (27:45):
And Patrick even came out in the league's number one
superstar comes out this week and says this, shoar, this
is not a good.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
Feeling to play three games in ten days. You think
the league will when the league's.
Speaker 5 (27:56):
Number one start says something like that, Well, the competition
committee listen.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Yeah, they'll listen. But the scheduling thing gets so complicated
that it just it just it's kind of ironic. He
got hurt entering this little thing. Three game right period.
Speaker 5 (28:15):
With that impact whether you played him or not, because
there's so many games, it.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
Absolutely would Okay, And then the other thing is, listen,
Patrick Mahomes is Patrick Mahomes. You know Taylor sweet the
whole deal. It's Patrick Mahomes. Okay, that's Kelsey Dayton, Taylor Kelly.
But they get there together and his wife there together
all the time. So but Andy's still your Andy's still
(28:41):
the coach, and we'll make the decision. I know, Patrick
there came out that he got angry, or Andy said
he got angry. I'm going back here, and no, you
can't take me out whatever he said to him, and
he said, calm down, we sit over there, you know
you I will I will decide, not you. And so
(29:01):
if he is, if he's if he's banged up a
little bit, the player doesn't make that call. Yeah, the player,
you can tell me. I feel fine. Well, what are
the doctors telling you? What are the doctors telling me?
What do I think about him going out when I've
got two games left in a stretch like you met?
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Ye?
Speaker 4 (29:17):
No, you got to make that call. That's not there's
a bright line. Yeah, you're the player. I'm the coach.
I make the call.
Speaker 3 (29:23):
Have you have you had that T shirt since you coached, by.
Speaker 4 (29:26):
The way, Yeah, yeah that's what I thought. Yeah I
had anything. I had it, and you can tell how
casual I was today.
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Yeah yeah, yeah, I like it. The hoodie and the
T shirt. I mean that's say.
Speaker 4 (29:35):
You ever watched Seinfeld all the time? Okay, remember when
he had a one T shirt he called Golden Ball.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
That's right. Yeah, there you go. I love that. So
that's it. That's it. That's an NFL issued teacher this
that he's wearing.
Speaker 4 (29:48):
Right, that it's clean. It's for you, but it's clean.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
God. All right, we're gonna break. I don't come back.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
Talk more about Geno and Sam Darnold. Uh, Minnesota's got
a couple of wide receivers. By that, we're pretty damn good.
We got to talk about those guys. And then to
Rek Woolin's getting picked on by everybody. He's getting picked
on by opposing quarterbacks, he's getting picked on by fans,
getting picked on by media. More with Mic and than

Speaker 2 (30:27):
All right, we're back here, final segment for us before
cracking Blackhawks pregame at five. And by the way, just
a little housekeeping here, little red zone numbers, guys, to
keep you up on Gino Smith passer rating of sixty
three point nine eight touchdowns, four picks in the red
zone forty nine percent this year. Those numbers good Dick
No Okay, Sam Darnold with time sixty eight, twenty two touchdowns,
(30:49):
three picks, ninety nine passer rating in the red zone
for Sam Frickin' Darnold.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
You watch this guy play, We'll see him on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (30:57):
How much of it is Jordan Addison and Jefferson and
the guys around him, or how much of it is
Sam Darnold figuring things out in his seventh year in
the NFL.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
I think it's not only that. I think it's the
coaches to you that spend time, They get down in
there and they have a good plan. And look at Jefferson,
he's all time. He's really a good receiver. But you
know the Seahawks have good receivers too. I'm right, come on. So,
and then it's the quarterback. Donald's having a great year.
He's thrown with confidence, and so that they have done
(31:29):
a good job of getting the most out of him.
Right now, I.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
Feel like Tarik Wolan is a human yo yo.
Speaker 5 (31:34):
Like his rookie year, he outperformed all expectations, and then
last year was not good pretty much.
Speaker 3 (31:42):
Throughout the year, and then this year is just up
and down and up and down.
Speaker 5 (31:45):
I mean, what what do you How do we get
more consistency out of Tarik wool.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
You know, that's a that's a puzzle because his rookie year,
I think he surprised a lot of people because I
think he was a receiver in college.
Speaker 3 (31:58):
Yes he was, right, Yeah, so.
Speaker 4 (32:00):
They switched in the corner, which is is tricky anyway,
but because of his size and speed, Okay, they can
teach him, but he's still he's still learning the I
think he's still learning the position, you know, and last
year he's he tailed off just a little bit. This
year with a defensive head coach and the emphasis now
they're putting on the defense, he's better. But the thing
(32:22):
that bothered me, Dick was his judgment on the on
the penalties. Early penalty cost some a touchdown, and it
was just it was so obvious a call and am
very unnecessary.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
Well you're talking about the personal foul, the late hit
on on Aaron Rodgers there on I'm sorry on who's
the damn quarterback? Thank you, Jordan Love. But what really
pissed me off is this that ended up being a
touchdown with Juli and Tarik will there. I mean, I'm
sure I got the picture of Romeo Dobbs. That's the
(32:57):
ball at the five yard will remember that. And I
don't know what he's doing. Is he trying to jab
the ball away?
Speaker 4 (33:03):
But dude, Mike, they had two people there. No, that
was you got to give credit to the Packer receiver.
But then that you're looking at that as a defensive coach, yep,
and going, oh man, that can't happen. Yeah, no, that
can't happen.
Speaker 5 (33:16):
That one minute left, one minute left, Michael Pennix, we
can start.
Speaker 3 (33:20):
I can't win a playoff contending team. He's surprised.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Yeah, no, you know, Atlanta is really hard to watch.
It's really hard to watch. But I am going to
make a point of trying to watch his game. I
loved him in college. Now he's getting thrust into something
here that's not easy for a rookie and he hasn't played.
Gee wiz, I don't understand, you know, I listen, but
(33:44):
I'm pulling for him, and I hope he does well.
Speaker 3 (33:46):
Now it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
Well, Uh listen, man, I can't say enough about how
much we appreciate everything you do for us every single year,
every single year, your threat and to retire every single year. Threat,
and I'm done. I'm not coming back every single year.
You just keep coming back to us. Man, So we
made a deal.
Speaker 3 (34:01):
As long as we're here, you're here, all right, You're
not going anywhere. All right?
Speaker 4 (34:05):
Did we do that?
Speaker 3 (34:05):
We did?
Speaker 4 (34:06):
Okay, all right, you.
Speaker 3 (34:07):
May have forgotten, but we did make that agreement.
Speaker 2 (34:08):
Forgetmember Kathy said to me, will you please keep him
out of the house for God's sake?
Speaker 3 (34:13):
Will you give him something to do for crying out loud?
Speaker 4 (34:15):
So let's sake.
Speaker 2 (34:16):
True Merry Christmas to you and the and the kids
and the grandkids and the Kathy.
Speaker 3 (34:20):
We love you and we'll see you in a couple

Speaker 4 (34:22):
All right, guyspire you you bet.
