Speaker 1 (00:04):
This is a podcast called twenty five wist s fucking
funball and they go whist So, yeah, it's too bad,
But what did you expect. It's a podcast called twenty
five wits.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
So welcome to the show. We will talk to new
Stanford football coach to beat A Pritchard in just a second.
I brought Christmas presents for Brandon and Kevin and they
aren't here.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Oh well then handle over.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
No, they don't get them.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
You snooze, you lose. For real, They're not gonna get him. No,
even like after Christmas, no.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Think so wow, that's what's Christmas is over.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
No, that's not true. That's not true. And this is
no better time to tell you that the present that
I want for you has not arrived. That I got
for you, I bought it and has not arrived. I
bought it two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
But I'm here.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Oh you're not leaving.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
No, I'm saying I am here on Christmas for you
to go, Hey, your present's not hearing. I have their
presence here.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
That's crazy, dude. So they're just going to lose out
on their presence, I believe.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
So wow, maybe not.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
We'll see you might see Brandon right, we'll see Mike.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I do have yours, Oh, thank you, so one from
TikTok shop. I can show you one of them as well.
Something something that I bought you because I bought you
and Eddi's gifts off TikTok shop and I got Eddie
a flamethrower and I got you something. But I have
something that I just I can't keep in my house.
So one of the things is something that is it alive? No,
(01:36):
it's something that I want nothing to do with and
I own it, but I'm just going to give.
Speaker 3 (01:40):
It to you. Is it legal?
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Say I make gad to arrest it for it?
Speaker 3 (01:43):
It is.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
No. The other thing I did buy for you. Here's
the thing I'm gonna give you because maybe you use
it for your studio. It's Vince Young signed Longhorn. Oh
my gosh, that's amazing. I'll pull my headphones out. Hold
I can't hear you. But so you can have this
and I since you're a long horn fan, I literally
am building a new space and putting helmets into it
(02:04):
because I collected like the ones I love. He said,
Oh my God, to give this thing away. I got
so excited. I pulled my headphones out. It's like getting
rid of that curse doll. I've been looking for a
long horns helmet, like if you look at my Google history.
Speaker 4 (02:18):
It is on there.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Well, so this is a Vince Young sign. It says
National Champs. It's a replica home.
Speaker 3 (02:22):
That's really cool.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
You can put that in your studio. That's a Christmas gift,
just mostly because I don't want.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
It, and that's what you don't want in your house.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
It's just been sitting there and it makes me vomit.
I walk by and I feel ill.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
You almost you gag every time you see.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
And I thought, maybe it'll add to the aesthetic from
all the helmets I'm using in another place, and I
just I couldn't get rid of that. Can't use it
for anything. Okay, that's you. This is the thing. Any
would you walk tech this? This is what I got
you from TikTok shop. And my wife said that's kind
(02:57):
of stupid, and I said, no, I think Michael like
it because I knew I was gonna give you the
helmet too. So what it is and you can pull
it out. It's a Ninja Turtles pizza slicer. It's a
ninja turtle pizza slicer that looks like one of you
know how you get targeted ads. These have both been
(03:18):
things in my targeted ads. Really, I'm seen this thing
on TikTok and I'm like, man, I would come your
ninja slice with that thing. I saw it and thought, man,
Mike would love that. The thing is when I show
my wife, she said he doesn't eat pizza, he's vegan.
I said, I'm sure there's something cut with it though.
Speaker 3 (03:32):
Yeah. Yeah, my weapon. I make these little pizza pockets.
I can slice them with this thing.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Can you open that? Yeah, I'd like to see. I
didn't never open the box.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
So it's like Raphael's weapon, the SI, the SI, but
it's got a pizza slicer thing.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
It slices, it dices.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
That's hilarious, dude said, there it is. Man. Sometimes you know,
things pop up on TikTok and you're like, this is
just perfect.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
I mean, do I want to I mean time kick
off Kevin. Yes, he had surgery on his shoulder and
so that's why he's not here.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
This is awesome, that's huge.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, I thought you'd like that TikTok talk. You just
you don't know one it's gonna get here, though sometimes
it comes from like China. Yeah, so you don't know
when it's actually gonna arrive. All right, let me give
is he like so hurd? He can't answer the phone.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
I don't think so he sent us a picture yesterday.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
If he's not so heard he can't answer the phone.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Why isn't here? Well, because I don't think he can
use his right arm or whatever arm it is. Well,
he types a lot and edits.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Let's FaceTime.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Okay, you look good.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
He's so close to my face. Doesn't matter, like when
I hold it so close to my face.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Oh no, there is.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
So we're here.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Ask him? Why are you not here?
Speaker 5 (04:58):
Because I'm handicapped due drugs?
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Oh okay, So we're doing makes sense.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
We're doing whistles today, okay. And we are handing out
Christmas presents and I had yours, but you're not here
to get it. So the rule is if you're not here,
you don't get it.
Speaker 5 (05:16):
So who's gonna get it?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Are you messed up? Onst He's like, what did you
have done?
Speaker 6 (05:26):
I had a complete tear in my rotator cuffs, so
they tore like a tendon and replaced it and all
that good stuff in this.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
At least at your left hand. How do you think
about that?
Speaker 5 (05:37):
Oh, thank god if my left hand be screwed.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
So what's the situation. You have a couple of weeks
now off.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
Of the I'll be in this cleen for six weeks.
I don't know if it's this one, but I'll be
in a sling for six weeks.
Speaker 2 (05:51):
No, but I'm saying you have a couple of weeks
off of work, so that's a probably advantageous to your healing.
Speaker 6 (05:57):
Yeah, that's why I did it at this time, and
so we could have a couple weeks off to be
a little light work.
Speaker 5 (06:02):
And uh to tell about a little bit with the healing.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Yes, isn't that nice of him? Though? That like he
scheduled it around this time because he knew he was
gonna have two weeks off and he wouldn't affect his
work for two weeks. Yes, it's nice. I wouldn't I
would do in the middle of the year. I'd be like,
I'm out six weeks.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Sorry, but then somebody then we'd get somebody to replace
you then maybe better than you.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
Know or you guys are just like, man, we can't
do this with that Eddi, this is so hard.
Speaker 2 (06:24):
It's funny you have that attitude because the mine's exactly
the opposse when it comes to that stuff. Okay, well,
I hope you have merry Christmas.
Speaker 5 (06:31):
Oh you're recorder right now?
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, man, you're on.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
We're literally doing the episode.
Speaker 5 (06:37):
That makes sense, all right?
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Would you think we're just calling you for fun?
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Yeah? I mean talking into microphones. I told you, Hey,
how was the surgery though?
Speaker 7 (06:52):
Was it?
Speaker 3 (06:53):
Was it like easy? Uh?
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:56):
I mean I just I don't remember anything.
Speaker 6 (06:58):
They put me to sleep and I woke up next
thaying know and my wife by my side, and that
was all.
Speaker 5 (07:02):
Good to go.
Speaker 3 (07:03):
Are you able to use your hand like it's in
a sling, but like, will you be able to type?
Speaker 5 (07:07):
No, it's still numb right now. I would tune some stuff.
Speaker 6 (07:09):
This morning, I was talking with just one hand because
my fingers are still numb from the stuff of the
game yesterday. It's numb for like thirty hours.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Dang. Uh do you want to I can show you
you're present. Do you want to see him?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (07:21):
Yeah, what is it?
Speaker 3 (07:22):
I'm gonna hold the phone?
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Yeah, I can do it. Okay, So.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
First off, you need that back back. No, I guess.
Speaker 2 (07:33):
Okay, First off, I got you the same thing I
got Eddie a flamethrower.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
You're gonna love it, dude.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
Well, I saw how much Eddie loved his, and I
was like, oh, okay, Kevin, one of those. Eddie really
sold it that it was good. And then I got
you a and I put a bow on it. I
got you a Drake May rookie card.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
What there you go? Oh, that's sweet, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
There you go, Drake May twenty twenty four rookie. It's
is in North Carolina.
Speaker 5 (08:04):
That's fine.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Well, no, that mean that's awesome, dude, Not fine, that'll
do awesome.
Speaker 2 (08:11):
Okay, So I'll uh, I'll just keep it here. I'll
put in my office. You get it when you come back.
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Okay, all right, sounds good.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
All right, buddy, Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas?
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Kevin.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Bye. Alright, there he is.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
So he got his present, he got his president. Off there, Oh,
get off the he's.
Speaker 2 (08:29):
All right there, he's drunk. Can we call Brandon? Yes,
Brandon was a little different. And I'll tell you why.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
I like that. You got Kevin a flamethrower.
Speaker 5 (08:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Once I saw yours, I thought you knewho because I
went and bought that one and ordered yours. You're just
bigger though, that's awesome.
Speaker 6 (08:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
If he doesn't answer, he doesn't get the present.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Come on, Brandon, Yes, there he is, Brandon. You're on mute.
Oh he's mute.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
How do you answer on mute?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
He's that guy on zoom.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
Yeah, but he answered, and it's on mute on a call, Harry,
we can't hear you, Harry, I can't hear you what
I'm watching him?
Speaker 3 (09:13):
How do you an your volume? Your volumes are right.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
Yes, it's it's all the way up. Can you hear me?
Speaker 3 (09:20):
Okay? Yeah, yeah, that's bizarre. Huh.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
All right, he's got ten seconds or he doesn't get
his prize.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Of You know what happens sometimes is it connects to
a bluetooth. You ever do that word automatically next like
to your car? Oh yeah, and you're like, why is
this not working?
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Then I've been on the phone and like a valet's
taking my car and they're talking. Then the person is
still talking in the valet's like wait, yes, exactly, all right,
so we'll give him ten seconds and then we'll just
move on.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Brandon, it's your gifts, don't lose it. Hey, are you
calling him or you're waiting for him to call me back?
Speaker 2 (09:57):
To call me back? Should I call him back?
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Did he do the sign of I'll call you?
Speaker 2 (10:00):
I don't know what he did. There is my gate calling?
Oh there is? Hey, what was happening?
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Then?
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (10:07):
It was It was my laptop. My laptop was just like, nah,
I'm gonna I'm gonna mute it all right.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
So Mary Christmas, Brandon, Merry Christmas, buddy.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Hey, So we're doing our Christmas Ver segment on Whistles
and I was giving everybody their Christmas gifts, and so
I have yours here and I, since you're not you're
not here to meet to give it to I was
just gonna keep it. But I thought I would just
give it to you on zoom and next time you're
here you can get it.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
Oh, got you?
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Okay? So I this comes from I think I insulted Brandon,
and so my gift is meeting him at the place
where I insulted him.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Huh. So I can show you this an inside story present.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Well, I thought about what I was gonna get Brandon.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
What was that? A sex Santa?
Speaker 2 (10:50):
It's a bag here, And I thought about doing the
same thing I did with you guys, get him something funny,
and instead I thought, I know, I insulted Brandon, so
I want to do it. So I knew I want
to do it better and make him go I'm sorry.
So what I said to Brandon was I questioned him.
Do you know how I questioned him?
Speaker 1 (11:09):
Like?
Speaker 4 (11:09):
When?
Speaker 3 (11:09):
When? What was the setting?
Speaker 2 (11:11):
It was on this show?
Speaker 3 (11:12):
On this show? And you questioned him, Brandon?
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Do you know how I questioned you?
Speaker 4 (11:16):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (11:17):
Did you question me on being a Cowboys fan?
Speaker 2 (11:19):
Correct?
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Yes, So what I have no is know what the dude?
What what? You'd never give it?
Speaker 8 (11:27):
I have a signed Emmitt Smith jersey here, oh with
the tag still on way Yeah, it's like, so I'm
sorry about that.
Speaker 2 (11:38):
It's a nineteen ninety two Cowboys jersey Mitchell and Ness,
oh my god real, I had to pull up from
the good collection, and so I like to apologize for
not knowing that you're a Cowboy fan. Bobby, dude, you
didn't have to do that.
Speaker 5 (11:52):
Thank you so much? Did it?
Speaker 3 (11:53):
Was crazy?
Speaker 2 (11:54):
You like that jersey?
Speaker 3 (11:54):
It's like, that's amazing. That's from like nineteen ninety say two,
and Emma Smith's No, dude, that's awesome.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
I don't know what you're gonna do with it, hang
it up, But mostly I felt bad about that.
Speaker 5 (12:09):
Ah, dude, I'm hanging that thing up. Man, that's so awesome.
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (12:13):
All right, I'll follld it back up. You can get
it next time you come up here. Why why are
you upset?
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Because that's an awesome jersey, Dude, Like I got Dak.
You've given me a Dak jersey before. That's awesome. You
gave my kids a bunch of cowboys jersey. But man,
that's that's that's the cooling to like the premiere. That's
a cool one.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Saved dude.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
I that is like the coolest thing ever. Thank you
so much.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
It makes me feel bad for the gift that I
gave you yesterday. Brandon gave me like no good stuff.
You know.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
He gave me a.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Hat stuff. He gave me a book that said there
are worse dads than you.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Oh that's good, that's funny. I like that.
Speaker 5 (12:48):
Did you read the inscription inside?
Speaker 2 (12:50):
No, I haven't got into the book yet. I didn't
know it was supposed to yet. I was mostly gonna
wait till okay.
Speaker 5 (12:55):
You're gonna love the inscription. That's all I gotta say.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
And then uh, imag imagin and Willy what is called Austin.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
What is it? Immageen and Willie.
Speaker 2 (13:06):
It's like a like a clothing company. I got him
like a hat and a shirt from there.
Speaker 3 (13:11):
Yeah that's nice. I mean the Emage jersey is way cooler.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
But yeah, I was gonna say I could try to
get his signed by he goes to Dallas.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
All right, So I'll leave this up here. We can
get it after the holiday.
Speaker 5 (13:25):
Dude, thank you. So I'm hanging that thing up as
soon as I get it.
Speaker 4 (13:29):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (13:30):
They have these cool like frame things that are like
little boxes. Uh that They're not too expensive to do.
They're awesome, Like that's what I do with my kids jerseys.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Oh, I gotta get I gotta get it right now,
all right, see buddy.
Speaker 5 (13:42):
Hey, thank you so much.
Speaker 4 (13:43):
Man.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
There he is talking on his laptop. I can't hang
up on anybody.
Speaker 3 (13:48):
Hang up on dude. So you're telling me that if
he wouldn't have answered in eight seconds, that would have
been mine.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
No, I would have I have like, oh you would
have kept it? Like no, yeah, you want to get
I have like five really really great on This was
one of them.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
That's amazing, I said.
Speaker 2 (14:00):
He wasn't a Cowboys fan. I was like, man, this sucks.
Speaker 3 (14:02):
You got that on a break?
Speaker 2 (14:04):
I bought this one?
Speaker 3 (14:05):
Oh you did?
Speaker 2 (14:05):
Yeah? Because yeah, I bought this one for a reason.
But then what do I need it for?
Speaker 3 (14:14):
I talked to a buddy of mine who does a
lot of those breaks or whatever. He said, Man, this year,
everyone's just getting stuff because he's I've been playing for
too long. He's got a bunch of crap. He's like,
I just got to get rid of it, and he's
not selling it really like people getting waynet just a
random stuff. All right, Let's go.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Over now to our interview with new Stanford head football
coach t Vita Pritchard. He comes over from the Commanders,
where he spent the last few seasons as their quarterbacks coach.
But really he's a Stanford guy. He's a former Stanford quarterback.
Big upset against USC once when they were like forty
point underdogs. It's a massive game, but we talk about that.
He's a Stanford guy through and through here he is.
(14:57):
I really liked him. Coach ta Vita Pritchard, coach are
you underwater right now? I gotta imagine the first couple
of weeks is just all relationships and saying hi.
Speaker 7 (15:05):
Right, there's a lot of relationships, a lot of kind
of reinserting back into the matrix. But it has been
fun because this is home and it's been exciting to
get back here.
Speaker 2 (15:15):
So I've got to spend a little time with Coach
Wraig and he came on the show and talked with him,
and he was like, I got one year. He was
very he said, I'm here because Andrew. I got one
year and I'm out. And that's such an interesting situation
for you to come in because one nobody left for
a bigger job, which wouldn't have happened there, and then
two nobody got fired. So it's kind of a positive
place to come What has it been like reinserting and
(15:37):
has has he helped it all?
Speaker 7 (15:39):
Yeah, you're right, I mean it was and is very
unique in the way that that transition occurred. And I
have not interfaced with him a ton leading up to
this situation. Obviously, I always knew who he was, you know,
through Andrew and then zach Ertz always spoke very highly
of him. But in our increasing interactions. As time is
(16:00):
gone on, uh man, my respect for him has grown
really really quickly, and not just who he is as
a coach, but as a man, as a leader. And
I can't say enough about what he did in this
unique situation, obviously taking over, you know, at a time
in the calendar that was not typical, and to come
in here like the day before springball, uh and and
(16:20):
and kind of be able to do what he did,
and and and and instill a culture and and start
building for the future, even though he knew that it
was that it was a kind of a one year
or one season shepherding uh during this time, I can't
say enough about the groundwork that was laid with the staff,
with the with the players here and the culture going forward.
So I would say, you know, Frank Reich is a
(16:42):
is a Stanford man forever and always.
Speaker 2 (16:44):
This is gonna be such a corny question, but since
you're a Stanford guy, to come and have the office,
was it a moment where you're like, this is now
my office?
Speaker 7 (16:53):
I would say it was less of that and more
trying to make sure I didn't walk in the other
offices that I've that I've occupied over my time here,
because there's probably around five or six. So it was
it was more of that than it was the awe
of being in this office. It was more like op
almost walked into that office because muscle memory told me
to do.
Speaker 4 (17:11):
So.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
Yeah, when we moved buildings, I drove to the wrong
building a couple of times because I had done it
so many times. He's you're just sitting down. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So you mentioned culture and that I think that word's
thrown around a lot. But how how do you start
changing culture? What are the first steps when you're gonna
do something that's so macro. Obviously it takes micro to
make macro, what do you start doing?
Speaker 4 (17:32):
Yeah? That's that's it's it's it is the question. It
is the question.
Speaker 7 (17:37):
As you come in here and you talk about installing
a culture, the first thing is the people, right because
culture is just a shared set of values between people
in a group and a and an organization and a team.
And so I think the first thing is getting the
right people here. You know, I'm working hard right now
to identify and hire a staff and put a staff together,
and so I think it's about bringing people here who
(17:59):
are a fit and obviously fit can be interpreted in
a lot of different ways. But they first have to
understand what our vision is going forward and and and
kind of who we're going to be, what we're going
to be about. And then they have to be a
fit for Stanford, you know, and this is a unique place.
It's a special place. It's a place that I know
and I love very very very much. And and so
(18:20):
they have to understand not that they have to have
even a history with Stanford, but there are certain things
that they have to understand are unique to this place,
and that there are things that we're not just gonna
put up with, but we're actually going to lean into.
You know, when you talk about the way that you
have to recruit here, some people can see that as
a negative. I see it as a superpower, right, and
something that that allows us to identify the people who
(18:41):
belong here and then bring them here and develop them.
So that's the first thing, is bringing the people here,
and then it's and then it's really deciding and defining
what the culture is. And that's not just a me thing,
right this, this this whole thing is not about me.
It's about myself, and Andrew and Sam Fisher and the
other folks in this building, really finding hey, what is
going to what is going to set us apart, and
(19:02):
what's going to make us the best program we can be.
And then once that's done, it's it's reinforcing that every day.
And I think that's the biggest thing is you get
a culture off the ground. It's making it very clear
what it is, and then it's reinforcing it. It's repeating
it so that so that that thing can be seen
and reinforcing it's catching people doing it right, right. I
mean we're going to talk about competition. That's going to
be core to our culture, right. I want to be
(19:23):
able to catch people right. So it's walking out to
the practice field when I can and go watching you know,
workouts and saying and saying, hey, you guys do a
great job competing, you know. So it's just reinforcing those things.
It's it's finding those and then it's being honest and
telling the truth when it's when we're falling short of
that mark, right, whether it's myself or anybody else, Like hey,
when you're instill in culture, it's really about making sure
(19:44):
that you're upholding those things in a really really strong
manner from day one.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
So I know clark Ley, who coaches Vanderbilt here because
we live and we've done some stuff together and they
have a similar, i won't even say issue, but a
similar circumstance to where they have to recruit a different
way And are there guys that you will see and man,
I'd really love to have them, but if it's grades
or that you can't take because of what the what
(20:09):
Stanford demands out of their student athlete.
Speaker 4 (20:12):
Yeah, you know what I mean.
Speaker 7 (20:13):
It's it's what you find here is there is a
filtering process, right and one that honestly, you know, I
mentioned it's a superpower of this place because it's it's
one of those.
Speaker 4 (20:24):
Things where I don't look at guys and say, oh, man,
I can't recruit them. Our recruiting department does.
Speaker 7 (20:29):
It does a great job of you know, those those
players usually don't even come across my desk, right And
and I'm saying my desk right now in this role,
but even even going back to when I was here before, right,
you really kind of what you what you don't see,
you're not you're not reacting to you know.
Speaker 4 (20:43):
So it's like, I know the guys that we can recruit.
Speaker 7 (20:46):
I know that crop of people that we are looking at,
the what we are evaluating and getting to know, and
so it's it's way more leaning into man, who who
can be here?
Speaker 4 (20:55):
Right?
Speaker 7 (20:55):
Who are those folks that we're looking for and identifying?
Because when you when you do cut that down, it
allows us to be a lot more specific and efficient
and effective, right in being able to focus on a smaller.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
Group from day one.
Speaker 2 (21:08):
Are you going to call plays?
Speaker 7 (21:09):
I came in here guns of blazing that I was
going to call plays, and I'm now in a space
where I want to stay open. I want to stay open.
I will be involved in the offense. That's something that
we're working through right now, and I'm looking forward to
putting it together, this collection of people that's going to
come in here, both on the offensive side and the
defensive side. But I have walked back from that stance
(21:30):
a little bit, just knowing that, like, I want to
get the best people here, and I don't want to
limit me.
Speaker 4 (21:35):
I don't want to limit us.
Speaker 7 (21:36):
I don't want to limit this program because I actually
want to get the best and best fit people for
this place.
Speaker 2 (21:42):
How do you feel about non conference games?
Speaker 4 (21:44):
I'm still figuring that out.
Speaker 7 (21:45):
Man, I'm still figuring that out, you know, just like
just like being in I mean, you ask non conference,
but I'm coming here, you know, to a brand new conference.
Then I left, and so I'm wrapping my head around that.
I'm wrapping my head around non conference games and all
to travel with conference, and so I'm still you know,
it's fun. It's fun to kind of reinsert here and
and kind of catch up, so to speak, right because
(22:06):
I'm both catching up on things that were familiar to
me and then I'm catching up in a sense that like,
oh man, this has changed since I've been gone, you know.
So uh, you know, when it comes to non conference,
I'm excited to play the best around the country, you know.
I mean I think that's something that you know, when
I was here before, you know, I have great memories obviously,
not Notre Dame is a is a non conference that
we play every year that has always been a really
(22:28):
good matchup for us, and and one that you know,
has a great history. And I remember playing in that game,
I remember coaching in that game, and we had some
great battles and I look forward to that one. And
then I think we've done a good job of scheduling.
You know, schools that you know are challenging to us
and that we have that we have great games against.
So I'm looking forward to kind of working with Andrew
and getting caught up on.
Speaker 4 (22:49):
A lot of that stuff.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Yeah. I wouldn't sedule a single heart team non conference,
we were seeing it. I would play all high schools, Coach,
I would just go play high schools in California. I
wouldn't travel because you guys are traveling all across the
freaking and you're playing nine conference games next year, You're
having to go to Virginia tehigh schools.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
What high school did you go to?
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Well, I didn't go, and one to California. I'm from Arkansas.
But I'm just saying all I would play are high
schools in California. So you don't you don't lose THATAK Academy.
Speaker 4 (23:14):
Yeah, maybe we can get some high schools on this.
Speaker 2 (23:16):
How do you know Pulaski Academy?
Speaker 3 (23:18):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (23:18):
Man, I've been recruiting for a long time.
Speaker 7 (23:20):
I can name the most random high schools from the
most random places.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Never has a coach mentioned PA in the middle of
an interview like that.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Oh, I've been there. Man, I've been there.
Speaker 2 (23:29):
Come on, hey, why did you go to Stanford?
Speaker 4 (23:31):
You know what.
Speaker 7 (23:32):
I grew up in a house my dad played at
Washington State University. My parents met there. My uncle was
Jack Thompson to Throwing, someone who played at Washington State.
So I grew up thinking I'm going to Washington State,
like this is this is.
Speaker 4 (23:44):
In the cards.
Speaker 7 (23:45):
I'm gonna work hard to be a college football player
and go play in the NFL, but I'm gonna go
to Washington State. Early in the recruiting process, right back
in the old Pack ten, you're basically if you were
a West Coast quarterback, you had to be the top
ten so you can be a Pac ten quarterback. They
took a quarter back early in that cycle, and it
kind of rocked my world. I was kind of like, wait,
I was supposed to go to Washington State, you know,
(24:06):
And I'm not joking. The only thing I knew about
Stanford when that happened was that they played Washington State.
I was like, I think I know their colors. I
couldn't even tell you where it was, but that's the
extent of what I knew about Stanford. Obviously, this was
a different time, right before social media, so like, you
know that that really didn't reach me for whatever reason
about like what Stanford was, about what the brand was,
(24:27):
and it just so happened. We had a connection to
the staff and I got invited to come to a
camp here to try to earn a scholarship. And I
remember walking on campus for the first time and I
actually saw the pool complex and I saw from a distance,
which doesn't excuse this what story I'm about to tell,
but I looked at it.
Speaker 4 (24:42):
I was like, Wow, the football stadium. That's incredible.
Speaker 7 (24:45):
And as we get closer're like, no, coach, that's the
that's the pool. And I was like, oh, that's the pool.
And it just spoke to just like how incredible this
this campus is and the buildings and all that. But
what I also didn't know was like the campus, the
buildings and the setting are not even the half of it, right,
because you get to know the people and you get
to know what they're about, how how committed they are
(25:08):
and how collaborative they are, and they're about excellence and
they're about cohesion, and its just like the more I
learned about this place, I was like, man, this is
these are my kind of people. And luckily I did
well enough in that camp I earned a scholarship. I
committed shortly after I got into school. Shortly after that.
I'll never forget that phone call. I was at our
high school stadium watching my sister play soccer, and we
(25:29):
got the call, and I remember, I remember that feeling.
I remember the reaction of getting accepted in the school.
And it's just like everything has led to, uh, you know,
being here and being a part of this community, and
and and it is it is, it is. It's made
me as a person like I am a product of
this place in so many ways. And I'm so grateful
for my experience here. And now I'm excited to be
(25:49):
able to give back and serve these players and and
and and hope to create an equally great experience for them.
Speaker 2 (25:56):
The continuity that is there with and you mentioned Andrew Locke,
did that help keep players from jumping in the portal
that he could already establish relationships for sure?
Speaker 7 (26:04):
And Andrew's special Andrew special like like this, this is
this is not only was it the fact that his
role was already filled and in place, but it's the
fact that it's him right, He has an extreme passion
for this place. He has an extreme passion period and
and he's a dude. He's a dude. Like people understand that, right,
and they know what he's about. And Andrew could be
(26:25):
doing anything he wants, right, But again, he and I
are similar in that, like we are here in service
of this place and the experience of our student athletes.
And that's and that's something that's real. And I know
our students, I know our football players feel that, right.
I know our community feels that how invested he is
in this place. And so that's a big part of
the reason that that guys are still here is they
knew that with his support, right, and the and and
(26:48):
the and his vision for this, that we were gonna
we were going to be going in the direction and
they wanted to be a part of it.
Speaker 2 (26:54):
Got three final questions, And this one may be done
because you could have ten times. But I'm going to
ask you because I.
Speaker 4 (26:59):
Got a question.
Speaker 2 (26:59):
Yeah it is because if you like, no, no, John Elway,
that's a dumb question. But have you got to spend
a time with John Alway?
Speaker 4 (27:06):
You know what I've met John over the years.
Speaker 7 (27:08):
I've gotten to spend a little bit of time with him,
but not it was not it's not been extensive when
you were.
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Playing quarterback there. Would you watch tape back of how
dominant John Elway was?
Speaker 3 (27:16):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (27:16):
Yeah, for sure. I mean I think I think it's
a it's a core tenet of being a quarterback that
you just you watch guys. You love to watch guys
and kind of see parts of their game that maybe
you see in yourself or or or aspirationally right, like,
oh man, I'd love to be able to do it
like that. So you really study, and he was certainly
one you study because he's one of the all time greats.
Speaker 2 (27:33):
All right, two questions left. Whenever you take a job
and this is your old school, so he probably did
have some gear. Is there like a like a box
that's like this is going to cover you for the
first two weeks, and it's just all it's the hats,
it's the shirts, it's everything you're gonna need.
Speaker 4 (27:48):
Absolutely, I had, I had.
Speaker 7 (27:50):
You know what's funny is I have a lot of
friends in the profession, and they a lot of them
have rules because you know they'll have made a number
of moves and going to different teams in France into
a lot of guys who have been in this coaching
world for a long time. They say, okay, hey, I'm
going to keep two things from my last job, and
so I can get rid of the rest give it away,
and then and then you know, I'm may get a
(28:11):
new gear at my new place. Well, obviously my journey's
been a little bit different, right, I mean, I played it.
I started at Stanford as in two thousand and five
as a freshman football player, and I was there throughout
continuously until twenty twenty two. So I accrued and acquired
a lot of gear over my time. Now I will
also say this with ten siblings and nieces and nephews
and my mom and dad and uncles. Like my closet
(28:34):
was raided early and often, so that was spread out,
but I still had a lot of gear, and luckily
with it, you know, me being alum, even when I
moved on from this place, Originally I was like, well,
I'm not going to keep two things. Like I still
got to represent the squad and be able to, especially
on the East coast, you know, kind of spread the
gospel of Stanford. So luckily I held onto a lot
of stuff. I believe my family did too, so we
(28:56):
weren't too far behind.
Speaker 2 (28:57):
Last question, And I want to talk about Jay and
Dan Niels for a second, but also how that correlates
with what you're doing now. Obviously you coach Jane Daniels
one Rookie of the Year, but what we would hear
and what we'd read is all of like the tech
you would use the glasses to see the field. Are
you implementing that at Stanford at all?
Speaker 7 (29:13):
Yeah, we're still looking at like the technology that we're
going to use. Obviously we're still we're we're not at
that point yet where we're looking at some of those things,
but you know, they they do a great job, like
the like the group that we worked with, the VR
company that we worked with with Jayden, it is it's
a great tool.
Speaker 4 (29:31):
But here's what I.
Speaker 7 (29:31):
Would say working with Jadan Daniels, working with Marcus Mariotah,
Sam Hartman, Josh Johnson this year, like Jayden works man
so like whether it's the whether it's the VR goggles
or walkthroughs or watching traditional film like he Jayden and
market like those guys make those tools, you know what
(29:52):
I'm saying, Like, like those tools are only as useful
as the user and the person who's utilizing them. So
it's really what's what I do want to separate. It's
like that is a powerful tool and one that's really
really cool, and if you believe in it and you
use it, it can be super helpful and really take
your game to the next level. But so much of
it was about the people, and like getting to work
with Jayden has really affected my career. Getting to work
(30:15):
with Marcus has really affected my career because those guys,
the way that they approach the game, the passion they
have for learning, the passion they have for leadership and teamwork.
Like I can't say enough about my time in that
room with those guys.
Speaker 2 (30:28):
Coach, I really appreciate the time. I know you're underwater.
You know, we got a couple couple guys've been talking
with that got new jobs, and so they all say
the same thing, like they have five hundred text messages
and so to cut out fifteen twenty minutes, I really
appreciate it. Hope you have a great offseason and good
luck next season.
Speaker 4 (30:41):
Coach, appreciate it, Bobby, have a good one man Sey coach.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
All right, that's it for us. We just want to
put up some new content. And talk to coach, which
was super cool for him to come on. Hope everybody
has a wonderful holiday too, man, and yeah, we'll see
you guys on the other side. I don't I don't
think we're gonna do any episodes between then because we'll
all be separate. Who knows, like a pop into the
room and maybe give a little analysis. I doubt it,
(31:12):
or you and I can just hop together at the
house at some point. Do you know how to even
load a podcast?
Speaker 3 (31:17):
We can figure it out.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
No, we can't.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
We can just look for the upload button.
Speaker 2 (31:22):
I'll end up loading it up onto Amy. Yeah, Caroline
Hobby's got a sports podcast up on her feed. Thank
you guys, Hope you have a great holiday. We will
see you at some point soon. Bye, everybody.
