【本期人物】
切斯特·威廉·尼米兹（Chester William Nimitz，1885年—1966年），生于德克萨斯州，美国海军五星上将。
1905年，尼米兹毕业于美国海军学院。第一次世界大战时任大西洋舰队潜艇部队参谋长。后在新港海军军事学院深造，较早认识到航空母舰的战略地位。
1938年获海军少将衔，翌年任海军人事局局长。
1941年太平洋战争爆发后，出任太平洋舰队司令，晋升海军上将。
1942年4月兼任中太平洋战区总司令。同年6月指挥珊瑚海海战和中途岛海战，取得胜利。此后接连指挥所罗门群岛战役、马绍尔群岛战役、马里亚纳群岛战役、菲律宾群岛战役和冲绳岛战役。1944年获海军五星上将衔。
1945年9月在东京湾“密苏里号”旗舰的日本投降仪式上代表美国签字。战后任海军作战部长，继续强调海军的重要性，至1947年卸任退役。
