Dave lab Welcome into episode seventy eightof the fifteen hundred forty four Miles to
Omahaw Podcast. My name is DaveLamb. I am the founder and editor
in chief of colscream Omaha dot comand creator of the fifteen forty four Miles
(01:12):
to Omahaw podcast. And joining meas he does each week, is the
All American pitcher Mike Perezy. Let'sjust jump right into it, Mike,
let's talk about the sweep out atUC Riverside and the Titans currently sitting in
first place in the Big West.I think it's amazing. I'm so proud
(01:33):
of him. I'm so proud ofthe coaching staff and the players. This
is the alumni has fired up rightnow. This is awesome, and what
a great weekend and what a greatmidweek game, and these kids are buying
into the program and the coaches thatyou know, it's been great. Well,
(01:57):
I'd be remiss if I didn't saythat you've been absolutely perfect with your
predictions. You predicted the suite,it wasn't. But also on top of
that, you said it wasn't goingto be easy, wasn't going to be
a walkover. You said that theBig West, especially on the road,
no matter how close it is,it's it's it's never really easy. And
so that Friday and that Sunday gamewhere both in one run games, I
(02:22):
knew it would be closed. Itis never easy to win on the road,
and I'm telling you, and theypulled out two tough games. But
that says something about the player, says something about the program. You're not
highly raped or seated or the topof the Big West if you don't know
how to win one run a oneball games. And that's what they do.
(02:44):
And it's been pretty cool, andI think I think one of the
most impressive things that came out ofthe weekend was the fact that the starting
rotation Friday, Saturday, Sunday,so obviously Tyler Stoltz and then Finchester on
Saturday, and then Evan Yates. All three of those dudes combined for I
(03:04):
have it, I have it here, but at zero point zero zero ear
between the three of them, andyou've got we've got let me see how
many how many innings did they went? They went twenty three of the twenty
seven innings at Riverside. They allsurrendered zero earned runs, which obviously is
(03:25):
going to set you up for nicesuccess. Well, how about this,
That's the first time, I thinkall season that all three starters did very
well, and they did very well. That was awesome. The first time
all three starters kicked butt and theygave their team a chance to win games.
(03:45):
And that's what they did. AndI think I understand that the Big
West Conference gave Finchester the Big Westplayer or a Big West pitcher of the
week. His line was eight innings, five hits, no earned runs,
one walk, eight k's and thewin. But I don't know. It
(04:09):
was crazy. And the fact thatfor the other pictures that were considered.
Tyler Stoltz wasn't even in the honorablemention were also considered. Tyler Stolts went
nine innings, four hits, noearned runs, two walks, five k's,
zero zero and one wins, Sowere they valuing he had more strikeouts
(04:32):
in one less of an inning pitch. But I mean, you gotta go
with the complete game. And I'mnot saying that they should have shared it
and made him co co Big WestPictures of the Week. But at the
same time, like, how doeshe not even get into the conversation as
a nominee. Well, I thinkthe predate guy Stults was awesome. Flip
(04:54):
a coin. They both were outstanding. They both did feel good about themselves
and and you know, especially asStults after the Santa Barbara start, good
for him to rebound and understand whathappened. And but I think Chester is
my guy. I mean, Ithink it's my daughter's favorite player anyways,
but that's my guy, and I'mfired enough to see what they're gonna do
(05:16):
this weekend. Well, and thenalso before we move off the starters,
I thought Evan Yates, especially pitchingessentially across the street. I mean,
the guy went to MLK out therein Riverside and six innings, pitched four
hits nowhere and runs, three walks, six k's zero zero era. Unfortunately
(05:38):
he got the no decision. He'dleft with a four run lead when he
was when he was lifted after thesixth, and you know, unfortunately there
was that eighth inning, when wecan get to that in a little bit,
but that eighth inning essentially brought itto a tie game and then gave
him the no decisions. So thatwas kind of like the hard luck award,
(05:59):
right there was for Evan Yates,as in, back in his hometown,
had a strong outing, good qualitystart, and unfortunately comes away with
with a no decision. Yeah,Evan Yates has been solid. It is
bad luck it happens. What blowsmy mind, which actually is pretty funny,
is early in the year the offensewas on fire and we both were
(06:23):
talking about how high the ear wasfor Kelsea forts and pitchers, and Jason
Dietrich is a pitchy goo right callsthe pitches. He's been one of the
most successful D one coaches called, you know, pitches are pitches for a
while, but they're pitches. They'reback on track. They are kicking they're
kicking butt right now. Well, the hern run average right now is a
(06:46):
four seventy four overall and a fourtwenty seven for conference. And let me
take a look at I think Ithink the team era last week around this
time, heading into the Riverside serieswas still a north of five, if
I remember correctly. So let melet me take a look at what it
(07:11):
was coming out of the Santa Barbaraand the USC game. I've got them
in my Thursday thoughts here. Sothe ERA was at a five twenty five.
So they lowered it by a fullpoint, by a full one earned
run in well four games, becausethat includes the LMU game where there were
two runs given up, but Idon't know how many of those were earned.
(07:35):
I'd have to take a look. But when you go from a five
to twenty five to a four seventyfour, So no, they lowered it
by a full half, by afull half turned run in four games.
But that's that's pretty good, especiallywhen you're thirty how many games, thirty
one thirty two games into the season. Yeah, absolutely, that's the great
(07:56):
and the pitcher the pitchers have tofeel pretty well about themselves. The hitters,
the offense going into Bakersfield. I'mtelling you that this program's on fire
right now and they're they're doing well. There's a lot of people that are
very excited that we're in the toptwenty five. And I think that the
excitement is back with the program inthe fact that a lot of the pundits
(08:20):
that are out there D one Baseballthey just had their their second edition of
the Nerdcast, which is them tryingto project the field of sixty four for
the postseason, and it's it's KendallRogers and Joe Healey and Aaron fit.
They sit around and they kind ofsay, Okay, this one's in.
Well, oh they're RPI is notgood enough and they're kind of on the
(08:41):
bubble and a stuff. And thenthe same thing with e eleven point seven
podcasts. Those guys, all ofthem are projecting the cal State Fullerton not
only is going to make the postseason, which they haven't done in you know,
for four years now, since twentyand eighteen, and then but on
top of that, they're already projectacting that they're probably going to win the
(09:01):
Big West Conference. Now, obviouslythere's what five, five, six more
series to go. You know, you know, there's plenty, plenty of
baseball to be played. We gotLong Beach Day or San Diego and Slow.
There's a lot of baseball to youplay. And I guarantee you Dietrich
and that staff or like, wehaven't accomplished anything yet. We're just trying
(09:22):
to get back to where it usedto be. Let's take care of business
this weekend and go from there. That that's their only mindset, and I
agree with them. You know,us as fans are like, yeah,
we're back, we're winning the BigWest, we're getting the regional and as
we should as fans. But thatcoaching staff, of those players, they're
(09:46):
not going to buy into that. There's no way they can't well. And
I'd love to hear that, becauseyes, we we as fans, people
that have followed the program, weall definitely want the Titans to get back
as soon as possible. And they'vewon twenty games, and that is twenty
(10:09):
games was the lowest bar for thetwenty one team. They won twenty games,
and that's that's the lowest win totalthat the Titans have ever had.
So if everything just absolutely implodes thisyear's team, which the way they're playing,
and the way things are going, you know, it would be catastrophic.
(10:30):
But the way things are going, you're you're expecting them to improve on
that one. And even if theygo five hundred, the rest of the
way, they're probably going to winthirty two, maybe thirty three games or
whatever it is. And that's justgoing five hundred. That's not winning two
out of three of each of theweekend series. So you know, I
(10:52):
think I think the arrow is definitelypointing up for sure, But we definitely
don't want the players to tune intothis or listen to that and then and
then kind of start coasting like,oh well we're a shoeing or something like
that. Nothing is guarantee, No, I think players, as what I
played, we just attacked every weekendas we're gonna win the weekend thresals were
(11:13):
never doubt. We're in the resons. We have a chance for roma.
That's why we're one thousand and fiveforty four miles old. But this is
something we expect every year. Thisprogram expects that we'll see what happens.
I mean, going, yeah,they're gonna, they're gonna, they're gonna
win this weekend. They're gonna dowell, and these kids are playing very,
(11:35):
very well, and the coaching staffis on fire. Well. Speaking
of that, the RPI, dependingon if you look at NC DOUBLEA or
more Nolan or D one baseball,it's it's between fifty two and fifty three.
So obviously you know the margin ofarrow is won there. Now.
Unfortunately, the RPI took a hitafter the UC Riverside series because you see
(12:00):
Riverside is I think, I wantto say they're two sixty or something like
that in the RPI. So eventhough there was the sweep, it still
is an RPI anchor. Now calState Bakersfield is only about two I want
to say, like they're they're twoforty, so they're not great. So
obviously, even if you sweep,it still can be that RPI anchor.
And the other teams in the BigWest like Long Beach and Irvine and Santa
(12:24):
Barbara, they haven't really had achance to play all three of those Big
West RPI anchors. And the factthat Fullerton has already played two of those
three ucr UC Davis and then nowcal State Bakersfield is upcoming, so you
know, not to put too muchpressure of it, like you have to
sweep. You have to sweep, but you lose one. You lose one
(12:46):
to a Quadrant four team, that'swhat they're calling them. You know,
that's that can really really hurt yourRPI. Now, two out of three
obviously, that's going to help youin the Big West standings, and your
RPI is really doesn't matter as longas you win the Big West and you
get that automatic bid. But youknow, in today's day and age,
you definitely want to be able toput yourself in the best position even if
(13:07):
something crazy happens in the Big Westis won by somebody else. I completely
understand that. But fuller to themindset is let's win Friday, Let's win
Saturday, and let's try to winon Sunday. There's no way they're thinking
like we're thinking, which I understandand they shouldn't. But one game at
(13:30):
a time, one game at atime, and if we're in position,
in my opinion, going to theLong Beach State Series where hey, we
have a chance to win this thing, we have a chance to go to
a regional that's pretty special. ButI guarritee you until they play Long Beach
State, which I think is thesecond to the last conference. They're just
let's try to win a baseball game. I don't care if we win twenty
(13:54):
two to twenty one or five tofour, or it doesn't matter who pitches
well, doesn't pitch, well,Let's win a baseball game. And that's
their mindset going to this weekend.Yeah, coming out of Riverside, it
was the seventh, the seventh weekendseries in a row dating back to Texas,
then Pepperdine, UC Irvine, UCDavis three games, Hawaii two games,
(14:18):
Santa Barbara two games, and thenmost recently the sweep out at UC
Riverside. But I did want totouch on a couple of things coming out
of Riverside as well. Is CarterWhite. We all know that Carter and
White's been having a really, reallygreat year at the plate. But unfortunately
his twenty four game hit streak inhis twenty seven game on Bay streak came
(14:41):
to an end on Sunday. However, in the grand scheme of things,
that's a good thing. And howis ending a streak a good thing?
Well, he was over three goinginto his final two plate appearances. His
fourth plate appearance, he lays downa sacrifice butt and obviously the streak was
(15:05):
still on the line. You know, he was probably going to get another
at bat or plate appearance. Wellin the in the ninth it was JT.
Naviac got hit by a pitch andthen the Carter White's baton at the
top of the order. So orderturns over and with no ounce, Carter
White lays down a fantastic bunt andsacrifices himself, gets JT. Naviac moved
(15:30):
over. Next batter, Moys Scusemanropes a double to left center and then
brings in JT. Naviac And nownow the Titans are leading and the streak
is over because more than likely CarterWhite's not gonna you know, unless it
goes to extras or anything like thatand they're in the lead. But sacrificed
himself and his and was unselfish andwas more of a team first kind of
(15:54):
a guy. Even though he hadthat that hit streak in that on Bay
streak going, he it was itwas all for the team, which is
fantastic. I think below coach Waltonas distay coaches, but bought into Deetrich
theory. How Augie was Horden, which is a big night Friday Night which
(16:15):
I can't wait to go tomorrow. It's all about the team. I mean,
if you ever are about one person, then the program's not going to
work. So these kids are doingthe right thing and it's pretty special and
it's fun to follow. Well, another thing that came out of the this
(16:37):
past weekend and then obviously on Tuesday, was the win over Loyal and Merrimount.
I wanted to point out that RyanFolks came out and had a three
up, three down, all threestrikeouts. And I know the Tuesday midweek
games are always going to be staffnights to the point where you know,
(17:00):
this guy's gonna get two winnings, that guy's going to get one. But
Ryan came in and struck all threebatters out and they were all swinging strikeouts,
and it looks like Ryan's got thatthat split finger fastball working for him
again. But I was happy tosee that, not just because of the
results of three up, three down, and three strikeouts, but if you
(17:22):
remember back, it was what thatHawaii series when Ryan came in and he
faced two batters, he threw eightpitches, all of them balls, walked
those two batters and then immediately gotlifted and then Unfortunately, those two batters
eventually came around and he was andhe was tagged with those earned runs.
But you know, eight balls, two walks, didn't even throw a strike,
(17:48):
you know, to come back fromthat and to really really show what
he's made of. You know,I was, I was beaming with confidence,
like, Wow, this kid didn'tlet that effective and now he's now
he's out there and he's throwing darts. Well, it's mental toughness. These
kids believe when they get the ballsthat they're gonna get the job done if
they struggle for whatever reason. PeytonTones, Jojoe, you know, all
(18:11):
these kids, they can't wait toget the ball back. Give me the
ball, give me the opportunity onsix seed for the program, and that's
what that picks. Your staff's about. It's awesome. And the hitter is
like putting in the lineup. Lamb'schanged so many times, but these kids
respond. It's just pretty awesome. And folks, your staff has to be
(18:32):
proud and they're putting the right guysin the right time. And you know,
I'm excited for what's going to happennext three or four weeks. Well,
you know, without without making this, you know, turning negative.
But unfortunately, there was some badthat came out of the weekend. I
mean it's like, oh, well, how can you say that. You
know, you sweep Riverside and thenyou beat LMU nine to two. You
(18:55):
know, how is there anything badcoming out of it? Unfortunately, it
seems like Maddox lata Got has somesort of an injury because he played on
Friday, and you know, hewent over three. I think he had
a couple of walks, but youknow, overall he's batting three twenty four.
So I didn't on Saturday when hewasn't in the lineup for some reason
(19:18):
and Jack Haley at shortstop moved overto second base and JT. Naviac came
in and took over the shortstop spot. I was thinking like maybe Maddox needed
a day off, or he wasmaybe some rest or something like that,
because you know, obviously you're notgonna you're not gonna sit a three twenty
four hitter after he goes over threethe night the prior night. But then
(19:40):
on Sunday we noticed in the dugoutand actually got a photo of it,
he had some sort of a backbrace on and it was like, you
know, he was fully uniformed up, but it was like at this black
back brace of some sort and we'llhave a photo of it up on col
Steve Omaha's Thursday thought that are goingto get published. But he didn't play
(20:03):
on Sunday, didn't play on Tuesday. So hopefully it's it's maybe something like
back spasms or something like that that'sthat's easily fixed. Hopefully it's nothing anything
like vertebrae or whatever it is.And I'm not obviously a doctor, I
can't make any kind of speculations, but you know, played Friday, but
then miss Saturday, miss Sunday, and then did not play on Tuesday.
(20:26):
So hopefully, hopefully that's a minorinjury and he's going to be able to
come back on Friday for for thefor the Bakersfield series and then also Jojoe
and Gracia. I don't know ifyou saw on Sunday when he came in
and relief of of Evan Yates,he threw, you know, not not
(20:49):
to go through the whole box score. People can go through that or whatever
it is. But what impressed mewas is that it looks like Jason Dietrich
actually has X ray vision. He'slike Superman with his vision when he comes
to pitcher mechanics because with two outs, he Jojo throws a ball and Jason
(21:17):
calls time, goes out there andtalks with Jojo and decides to go back
to the dugout, leaves him inor whatever it is, and it just
looked like your garden variety, butit seemed like it was a little bit
weird in the fact that it's like, okay, well he's already got two
outs and you know, he threwone ball. It's like, what's why
(21:37):
would you come out, you know, mid batter and trying to come up
down or something like that. Nextpitch he throws is it's fouled off into
the dirt circle right there at homeplate. Foul ball. Jason immediately comes
out of the dugout and points tothe home plate umpire and is bringing the
head trainer with him, and it'slike, hey, we're all meeting at
(22:00):
the mound right now, and theumpire goes out there and our trainer,
his name is Mike Kwang. Hewas kind of working on JoJo's left shoulder
and was kind of, you know, like feeling this and like, oh,
can you feel that you know, obviously trying to read lips and all
(22:21):
that stuff, can't see it.But he was lifted and Hankle was already
warming in the pen, So it'snot like one of those things where you
know, the umpire was going togive him as much time as he needed
because it was an injury replacement, but Hankel was already warm and you didn't
really necessarily need all that time. But it was concerning in the fact that
(22:44):
coach Dietrich goes out there and grabsthe umpire and grabs the trainer and says,
I'm seeing something and we need weneed to get him out of there.
So I don't know if it waspreventative. I don't know if it
was whatever it was, but itseemed like he was a shoulder thing and
they weren't looking at his elbow oryou don't do any of that kind of
stuff, So you being the picture, I don't know, I don't know
(23:07):
what that means. Well, that'sscary because Jojo is a guy they you
know, they need, and iffuture's coming out, I mean, the
kid gets a little sore injured, that's not good for the Titans because that
kid's pretty special for that program. And if they're gonna bring somebody else in,
then something happened to him. Idon't know, maybe it's a tweak,
(23:29):
maybe it's something not serious, butyou know, we're not gonna let
you finish this game right here.So and Joejoe has been outstanding. So
I hope and pray that he's finefor this weekend, he's fine for the
rest of the season. But youknow, I know his pictures. You
know, we all want to fightthrough our injuries because you know, we
don't believe in you know, tenof ninitis or all this other stuff.
(23:52):
But yeah, so I hope he'sokay. And he came out for a
reason, So that's what I think. Yeah, and and and you know,
I think we're all in the sameboat when it comes to that.
We all want him to get betterbecause you know, he's he just makes
the Titans better, you know, coming in the late innings and being able
to shut shut the games down andnot him not being able to pitch on
(24:18):
staff night on Tuesday. They didn'tneed him win in nine to two,
so you know, the back endof the game, you didn't necessarily need
to come in even if he wasone hundred percent healthier or he finished you
know, any there or whatever itwas out there in Riverside. I don't
think he probably would have seen anytime on Tuesday anyway, So it's not
it's not able to say, like, well, we didn't see him pitch
(24:41):
on Tuesday, so you know, obviously he's injured or whatever it happens to
be. You know, that's that'shard to tell because he probably wouldn't have
He probably wouldn't have pitched anyway.Just absolutely. But if we don't see
Joe so this weekend, we knowsomething seriously wrong. If we see him
this weekend, then then he battledthrough a few things here there, and
that's what we're hoping for. Yeah, well, speaking of this weekend,
(25:04):
before we jump into the preview ofcal State Bakersfield, did you have any
other thoughts that you wanted to sharein regards to the UC Riverside or even
the LMU game on Tuesday. Youknow, I knew they'd have a couple
of tough games. It's not easy. I mean, Florton is not dominant,
but they're finding a way to win, which is impressive. And that's
(25:26):
what they did this weekend and LMUand they took care of business in the
staff game. The players are playingwell, and again we've talked about it
before. We don't rely on oneplayer. We don't reply on, you
know, the three hitter all thetime or the Friday guy all the time.
Like we don't know who's going tostep up, and maybe that makes
that team unique. I don't know. Going in this weekend, you know
(25:52):
cal State Bakersfield. I've never heardof cal State Bakersfield when I played baseball,
But during the Big West it's CoachHordnight. Um, you know,
let's just keep during the page,to keep moving forward. Well, I
wanted to I wanted to ask youa little bit before we kind of preview
what to expect out of the Roadrunnersand the reason why you don't recognize cal
(26:12):
State Bakersfield just because they're they're inthe boat of transitioning from Division two.
Much like UC San Diego when itcomes to Friday Night the George Horden Jersey
retirement ceremony. I wanted to getyour thoughts on this one and the fact
that I found a little bit curiousthat it was decided that it was going
(26:37):
to be on a Friday night atfive thirty. Now we've kind of been
lamented the whole Friday nights used tobe at seven o'clock. Now they've been
moved up to six. And Idon't know if that's an ESPN plus thing,
which I don't really understand. It'snot like it's on ESPN and they
actually have time slots. I mean, streaming is streaming. You can you
could schedule a game for you know, six thirty two and thirty seconds and
(26:59):
if that's when the game starts, that's when the stream starts, and you
know, you really don't have tofit into this this little hour or thirty
minute time blocks. But anyway, was lamenting the fact that the seven o'clock
games on Friday, because let's let'sface it, here's Orange Country traffic.
The fifties seven Freeway on a Fridayin the afternoon is not easy to navigate.
(27:22):
So people that work and either workeight to five or you know,
nine to six or whatever happens tobe getting to a six o'clock game on
a Friday, it's a little bitof a struggle. Now, on top
of that, they're encouraging people tobe there at five thirty in their seats
for you know, a really, really important thing. And I mean,
I know the world doesn't revolve aroundme, but unfortunately, I'm not going
(27:47):
to be able to get there,or unless the game that I'm going to
umpire tomorrow goes super fast and I'mable to hustle down from from Brea to
get to my seats by five thirty, you know, I'm unfortunately, I'm
probably gonna miss it. And Ihave a feeling there's a lot of other
people out there that are going tobe in the same boat. Either they've
(28:07):
got to take time off of workor just take the whole day off or
whatever it is in order to bethere. So I would just I found
it to be a little bit curiousas to trying to do it on a
Friday, and especially at five thirty, right, And I agree for whatever
reason that's the deal, and mebeing an alumni and me being close to
(28:29):
a lot alumni. You don't wantto know Coach Freeze to do it tomorrow.
Coach Freeze is going to steak outafter lunchtime and I have to coach
a varthday game against Diamond Bar.But because diavon Bar is not very good
and we're probably gonna be the numberone seed, in D two. I
havent going straight to the floor toonhotel and me Mike Kirby, You how
(28:52):
about Mike Kirby and Tony Martina asa national champion, and we're going to
prepare for Coach Jordan Night. Yeah. And I had in talking with with
Coach Hordon this this past week inpreparation in advance of his jersey number being
retired. You know, I askedhim about you know, he'd give us
(29:15):
a sneak peek of what what wecan expect for that, and he didn't
have the rundown sheet, you know, five minutes you know, countdown sheets
or internectin stuff. But he doesknow that there's going to be quite quite
a showing of alumni coming out, former players, former coaches that he's he's
you know, either mentored or coachside by side with. You know,
(29:37):
you can probably count on seeing Dave'sranto there. I don't know if if,
if Rick Mannerhook will come out,but you know, there's there's going
to be an outpouring of people andthey're going to have that big hospitality tent
over there for all the alumni andthe coaches and all the stuff. So
it's it's gonna be a big deal. I mean, it's all. Let
(29:59):
me tell me something because I hopeyou're there in a certain hour, because
I think about an hour before thegame or maybe forty five, Coach Hour
is going to speak in the classroomin the new building for twenty minutes.
All I want to do is bethere for the twenty minutes, and I
hope I get zero attentions. Idon't deserve any of it. But he
(30:21):
has touched so many lies that book. I just want to hear him speak
for twenty minutes, and then thealumni their families enjoy the KEL State Bakersfield
game, and us as alumnis,we never played against KL State Bakersfield,
so we just want to hear aboutCoach Hour. Then we want to enjoy
the evening. So that's what we'regonna do. Yeah, well, it's
(30:44):
gonna be a special special night. You know. Hopefully, hopefully my plate
umpire because I'm on the basis tomorrow, Hopefully my plate umpire calls a lot
of strikes. You know, we'reable to get out of their real real
fast. Yeah, and you know, hopefully I'll be able to make it
down there by five thirty but youknow, yeah, we would encourage there
and I can't wait because I'll bethere early, and there's gonna be a
(31:07):
lot of great alumni, a lotof great tradition, and coach Horney be
special that he is. Well, let's let's let's wrap things up with a
little preview of what we can expectout of out of cal State Bakersfield.
So we hit on it a littlebit earlier in the fact that Bakersfield is
(31:27):
one of those bottom of the barrelBig West teams right now, they're fourteen
and eighteen overall, and they're fiveand ten in the Big West, so
they're they're number they're third from thebottom, so they're ninth right now in
the Big West coming in and youknow, they got off to a nice
(31:49):
start in the beginning, but theyplayed teams like Saint Thomas in Manhattan,
but then they got swept by Stanfordin Ohio State and U see Santa Barbara
and U see San Diego, soyou know, that's where a lot of
their losses came from. They managedto salvage one win over UC Davis,
but they lost that series as well, so but they did win two out
(32:12):
of three versus Hawaii, So youknow, they've kind of a small winning
streak going on because they came outof the weekend series against cal Poly winning
Saturday and Sunday, So they've gota little mini two game winning streak right
now. And they did not havea midweek contest this past weekend or this
this past Tuesday or Wednesday, soyou know, they ranked ninth out of
(32:35):
the eleven Big West teams in battingaverage with the two sixty three, and
they ranked eighth out of the elevenin TmrA with a five thirty seven.
But unfortunately, they ranked dead lastand fielding percentage within nine forty four with
sixty five errors in thirty two games. That's what almost two averaging almost two
errors per games. So if theTitans can take advantage of fielding errors out
(32:59):
there, that's obviously any of thosefreebees that the Roadrunners are going to give
the Titans, they definitely need tocapitalize and cash those in. But it
looks like the starters that are scheduledfor this weekend for Bakersfield looks like it's
going to be a right hander RyanVerdugo. He's gonna go on Friday against
(33:22):
Tyler Stoltz. He's a Friday guy. That's the bishop of my kid.
Am I right, you're right, you are absolutely right. So he was,
yeah, that's good for him.Yeah, he's a look mid eight
slider guy. Good for him.Yeah, three three. His record is
three and five with a five fiftysix R. And then on Saturday,
(33:45):
they're gonna come back with a lefthander, hopefully. I don't butcher.
This guy's name Matt. It's spelledc O m n os, so I
want to say comnos. Maybe.I don't know. We'll figure it out
when doctor Chris Albat announces his nameon Saturday, we'll hear what the actual
(34:06):
pronunciation is. But he is twoand two with a three point two six
ERA. He's a lefty. Andthen Jacob Gutierrez is a right hander.
He's scheduled for Sunday. He's twoand oh with a two point two five
ERA. Something that's unique about JacobGutierrez is he's actually listed as an infielder.
(34:27):
And you know, I think he'skind of one of those dual role
guys. But on Sunday against calPoly, he pitched a complete game.
He pitched all nine Indians. Wow. So a lot of his other pitching
appearances when he wasn't just in thelineup as a batter. Is we're out
of the bullpen. But I don'tknow if injuries or whatever it is,
(34:52):
but they've made him into a starterto the point where he went all nine
against cal Poly and actually got thewin. And so who knows what?
You know what we can get outof the Sunday. So are those are
the three the three arms that aregoing to start? And then also when
it comes to the bats, Iwas doing a little bit of research on
(35:12):
them, and it looks like, unfortunately, no one on the Roadrunners who
has any kind of significant games orplayed appearances. None of them are hitting
above three hundred. Riley Casper leadsthe team with a two ninety seven,
and James Bell is the most consistenthitter for the Roadrunners. He's got about
(35:34):
thirty six. He's got thirty sixhits, eleven doubles, twenty seven RBIs
and fifty three total bases and he'sbatting two eighty three. And then Matthew
Karada holds a three eighty batting average, but he's only played in about twenty
three games and he's only started nineteenof them. So he's you know,
who knows he might be getting intointo the games this weekend, but not
(35:57):
one hundred percent sure based on onwhat we've seen what happened last year at
Foord to that Bakersfield. Why doI have a bad feeling that have no
clue? But Bakersfield actually won agame or two against them? Was that
true? I believe that they did. Let me let me take a look
at the at the schedule from lastyear real quick, because I've got it
(36:20):
pulled up, and let me seewhat they did against Bakersfield. So Bakersfield,
Yeah, they lost. They lostthe first game Friday and the second
game Saturday, so it was aseven to six final and eleven innings,
so a little walk off on Fridaylast year. And then they lost five
to three in a regulation game thereand then they salvaged the series by winning
(36:45):
one game ten to seven last yearup there at Bakersfield. So you know
that was the That was the twentytwo win season unfortunately. Right So but
hey, I'm just telling you rightnow, Bakersfield is it gonna go down
easy? And yes, fortune ismuch better, but we're not used to
(37:05):
be in the favorite for a while. So my prediction is there's gonna be
two out of three games. They'regonna be a nail bier, and I
expect us to sweep, but it'snot going to be easy. Well,
the good news is is it isit is on the weekend at Goodwin,
so they don't have to worry aboutstaying in hotels or you know, going
(37:28):
on the road and playing in anunfamiliar, unfamiliar ballpark. So they've got
that working in their favor. Butat the same time, you definitely,
you definitely want to get that sweepbecause you definitely don't want to have that
RPI anchor and having a loss toa plus two hundred RPI team. So
no, I we all get thatas fans, and yeah, we want
(37:49):
to sweep. We want the RPI, we want the Big West. But
these kids, they're not usedful.Let's just take Friday. Let's win Friday
and go after Saturday. We thinkwe got the starting rotation down, players
understand their roles, and let's justsee what happens. We're going to show
up to play every day. We'regoing to show up to every pitch every
(38:12):
evening, and we're going to competeand we're gonna do things the right way,
