two thousand and twenty three season, his second complete season as head coach of
the historic and tradition rich program. In two and twenty three, the Titans
finished the year thirty two and twentyfour, twenty and ten in the Big
West Conference and earned the automatic bidinto the postseason, playing in the Stanford
Regional in Palo Alto. There, the Titans went one and two, eliminating

(01:32):
San Josie State and preserving the streakof never going oh and two in a
regional So welcome into the show, coach. Give us your thoughts on from
the year one to year two beingable to get the Titans back to playing
winning baseball for the first time sincetwo thousand and nineteen. First, thanks
for having me. Good to seeyou again. Yeah, it's year two.

(01:53):
Obviously, there's a lot of pozzilethings that I felt happened. Year
one is kind of just again you'regetting your feet what everyone's trying to figure
things out. Your two transition seemedobviously a lot better, but you know,
you still have things you're working onfigure out roster wise and all that.
So yeah, I thought there's alot of things that we had to
address as a staff going into theyear or two, obviously bringing in I

(02:15):
think twenty two new players in fall. We addressed a lot of areas from
culture perspective, having a lot ofteam meetings on a weekly basis, you
know, kind of gathering a coupleguys from each class to have you know,
consistent meetings with them. I thoughtthey did a great job of building

(02:35):
team chemistry. Obviously, this clubhousehas been huge for us for our guys
to just be around each other anddo a lot of things together. So
that was the great part because theseguys, like I said, they really
got to know each other really well. They dove in and did a good
job with that. So my posthings happening and we're looking forward to obviously
having things continues to go in theright direction, but there's a lot of
positive stuff. Well, you mentionedthat you had roughly twenty two newcomers coming

(03:00):
in. With that many newcomers cominginto the program, and then you had,
I want to say, like roughlyless than twenty returning veterans. How
did you, as a staff andthe veterans get everyone to buy into what
you're trying to rebuild and regain asa program. I think the I think
it was seventeen returners that we hadcoming back. We had talked to them

(03:22):
previously just a state that you know, they're all on board. They understood
what we were striving for as thestaff, our vision. We just asked
them that it's going to take allof us to pull from the same rope.
And I think the guys did agreat job of building that the returners,
and it was just more we wouldhave a lot, I said,
a lot of meetings where guys wouldtalk to each other. We asked them

(03:42):
to have more get togethers at theirplaces, have guys over for dinner.
We'd have dinners here and like Isaid, it would be just get togethers
where we just all continuously agreed toget to know each other. And we
felt that was important for us tobuild that kind of the family atmosphere,
to build trusting each other, andthat takes time, but we all worked
at at a high level, andI think the newcomers did a great job
of adapting, of learning, ofunderstanding the picture we were painting. And

(04:06):
I think at the end of fallwe felt really excited kind of what's transpired,
and we're, you know, anxiousto see what the spring was gonna
entail for us. We're going throughthe previous season, exiting a wet and
dreary February with a record of twoand four. The team rattled off nine
consecutive weekend series wins through March andinto April. And what do you think

(04:30):
was the catalyst that propelled this teamto go twenty four and nine. In
those two months that included a sevengame and a six game winning streak.
I think all the little things theywere believing in themselves. After the Stanford
series that was a tough one.We felt we had them in that game
three and we lost that. Butour guys needed to go through those things

(04:54):
to understand that they can compete, and they had to understand that they compete
with anybody. And then when weplayed Tech, that was a really good
series. We won that series, and our guys soon believed and I firmly
believe that they thought they could playwith anybody. And then it was about
just playing the game of baseball. That's what we kept on stressing them as
practice has got to be high highlyyou know, about fundamentals being competitive,

(05:16):
you know. So I think whenwe went to Pepperdine and won that series,
a confidence as big as you knowin this game. And I think
our guys who started feeding off that, whether we played a bad game or
not, they just kind of moveon from it and get to the next
game. And I think we dida good job with that, just playing
every single game, and with that, we did a good job of finding
way to like you said, whena lot of weekends, and that was

(05:38):
huge, and that's something that theyhaven't done in a while. So we're
going through all those little things thatsome of these guys haven't experienced. So
that was a fun part. AndI think they continuously grew off that and
fed off each other and that wasa fun part. And then you know,
you saw at the back end wehad a little bit of a tough
spot, but that's it happens ina season. You don't know when it's
going to happen. And I thoughtour guys, you like said, they
did a good job of deleting eachother. And I think that what's helped

(06:00):
us at the back end. It'skind of getting out to kind of a
good start in conference helped us kindof have to absorb that blow a little
bit at the back end. Well, I was just about to ask that.
I said, you know, obviouslywith the with the good does come
the bad. And then coming outof May, the road trip to TCU,
that kind of sparked that eight gamelosing streak. It also coincided with
the Titans being ranked in the toptwenty five by publications like D one Baseball,

(06:25):
and then they had an RPI ofabout forty one forty two, depending
on where you looked. Now thatyou've had some time to digest it,
is there one thing that you canpinpoint that might have led to that LESA
season's kid. No, I justthink that sometimes you go through a tough
spell. We played a good gamefright against TCU. We knew they were
good and we faced them. Theywere kind of going through that a little

(06:46):
tough spell too. But they're verytalented and we knew going into there that
they would be much of them onvideo and it's crazy, right they go
to all they to Omaha. Butwe saw that the talent that they had.
And then, like I said,we'd lost a couple of games.
We didn't play good baseball. Ithought the bodies were a little tired.
Then, like you're saying, withexpectation sometimes guys and I thought the teams
wanted to do more, They wantedto play better. They do things that

(07:10):
we didn't really practice. And soall of a sudden, when we're getting
a little bit of attention or peoplethink you're playing good, that puts a
little more pressure on them. They'rewanted to do more because they care it
wasn't them being scared or anything. It was just they cared a lot.
They wanted to keep on playing ata high level, and then we just
got in a funk. We justcouldn't get out of it. They want
to stuck together. That was apositive about this team. These guys were
great and we all stuck together.Norman's point, fingers, you know,

(07:31):
we just kept on working and going. We had to find a way to
overcome the little things and play betterbaseball. Like I said, we weren't
playing good baseball. We weren't pitchingit good at times, we were having
a good offense, didn't play gooddefense. We wouldn't play two of those
three. As you know. Wejust didn't play good baseball. And that
happens, but we were hoping thatit wouldn't go as long as it did.
But in essence, I think itwas great for us to learn from
that too, and to build offof each other and to help them grow.

(07:54):
And that's what a season does,is there's so many kind of ebbs
and flows in turns of a season. I think they helped them as a
team and become better and allowed usto finish, you know, on a
positive. To put us in aspot that I knew that they were excited
that we were in. We seemto be reading my mind, because my
next question is talking about the finishto the regular season. Was winning three
of the last four games and securingthe postseason berth while up at cal Poly.

(08:18):
Nobody on this team, even ZachLeu, who had been on the
twenty nineteen team that finished one gameabove five hundred, none of these players
had experienced playoff baseball at Division onelevel. Describe the atmosphere around the team
when they secured that postseason berth. They're pump, they're excited. We all
knew what light ahead going into thatlast week. You don't watch the standings,

(08:41):
you're not there to follow them. You just recognize and kind of let
them know, Hey, this iswhat lies ahead, this is what we
need to do. So I didshare with them, if you know,
if you were to tell, ifI would tell you, guys August twentieth,
our first meeting wherever day that was, that the last week would mean
we have a chance to compete forBig West title, how many guys would
have taken it? And they alsothey were taken it and raise their hands.
So knowing that just said, hey, so at the end, you
still have something to play for andplay your style of baseball, and I

(09:05):
believe that we will be fine. And I thought, you know, winning
that game on Sunday Gainst Long Beachand then going to Slow which is a
tough place to play, they've donewell against us. Whether they're having a
tough year or not, they're still, you know, a great program.
You know, we won the firstgame, and obviously we saw that Santa
Barbara loss, so we knew whatlight ahead for us. And they came

(09:26):
out and did the job the nextgame. And obviously we wanted to go
for the share of the big Besttitle, so that was part of it.
That was the unfortunate thing that didn'thappen. But the positive is the
opportunity to get to postseason was hugefor us and that's what we're excited about
that. And the guys have beenhere. Lou didn't. Lou hasn't been
a part of that, and that'sthe reason why he came back, Katin
Connor came back. Some of thoseother guys came back because of they had

(09:48):
that same vision, they had thatsame belief and for them to experience it
that's well, that's the most satisfyingthing for us as coaches and this coaching
staff see those guys get experienced thatI thought we did well in the regional
but became a little short. Well, you've been part of teams that have
played in the postseason, most notablyyour time at Kyle State Floorton going to
Omaha twenty fifteen as the pitching coach, but you're an assistant coach at the

(10:09):
time. Outside of the disappointment ofthe end of the result up at Stanford,
how was the postseason for you nowthat you're in a head coaching position.
Like I said, it was awesome. It was awesome because you see
it from a different lens, notsaying that assistant you don't. You respect
it and you cherish it and youappreciate it. And I think that's one
thing that as coaches, we dothis because we want our players experience of

(10:31):
the postseason about and to see thembe excited and happy for all the hard
work they put in. That's whatit all boils down to, and that's
for me, is the most importantthing as a head coach. You're just
you know, these guys when theysee how much work they put in at
the end of the day for themto experience that that rewards everybody in the
right manner, Knowing they've come froma many different places and they've had it's

(10:56):
been a grind to get to wherewe were, but that's part of life,
right, That's how teach them howlife's going to be and how the
parallels of life lessons and all that. So for what we did, I
was pumping excited for not just aplayers, but for the program. You
know, I obviously our goal isnot to get to a regionals, to
get to all the way and competefor natchal championship. But obviously there's a
process and steps that we have totake continuously grow to move forward. Well,

(11:18):
you had mentioned Kayden Connor, youmentioned Zach Lu. There were four
seniors who played significant roles in twentytwenty three that were that no matter what
happens in the draft, they're notgoing to be back next year because they've
exhausted their NZ eligibility. Exact Lu, Carter White, Finchester, Tyler Stoltz.
What can you say about those fourguys and their contributions to the Titan

(11:41):
baseball program. They gave a lot, They gave everything they could, and
that's what was great to see isthem too to know what a Titan was
and to believe in it and togo out there and compete at a high
level. You know, those guyswill be missed, but I firmly believe
they'd left their legacy behind. Ithink they did a great job of passing

(12:01):
down what they believe is going tohelp the next The guys are returning,
but the incoming guys, so theyleft some things behind that's going to help
us continues to grow and go inthe right direction. So what they did
is not just paying off this year, but it's gonna pay off down the
road because I know those guys caredabout what it meant to be a Titan,
and they came here and they youknow, like I said, they

(12:22):
got in the postseason, but thatwasn't the ultimate goal. But it's part
of our goals. And so whatthat said, you can't ever put a
price on what they did for us. It was very tremendous, and I'm
thankful for those four guys, butalso for all the guys that contributed,
not just those four, but atleast they got to leave their college career
in a high note, and thenguys like Kayden Connor, colt Erman,

(12:43):
Nick Nankill could possibly return if thedraft doesn't break their way. How difficult
is it to prepare for a seasonnot knowing if major contributors like those three
could return or you have to fillthose holds should they leave. That's the
I think everyone's question every coaching staffsa million dollar question is how do you
prepare for that? With the draftbeing pushed back to July ninth, it's

(13:09):
tougher because how many Katon Connor's gonnabe out there, Nate nan kill is
gonna be out there? Not alot. So what you're trying to do
is just talk to those guys, understand what their sign ability is, get
a good feel for them, what'sgoing to take for them not to come
back to school and to stick tothat. But we do a home or
two talking to the different organizations andall their people on their you know,

(13:33):
their hierarchy, to get a feelfor what they're thinking about our players than
our incoming recruits too. How manyguys are contemplating possibly wanting to sign or
field they're in a position to possiblysign, So it is tough, But
at the end of the day, you're doing your best to put the pieces
of puzzle together, keep your rosterwhere you need to be, and that's

(13:56):
where it's It's a lot of communicatingwith people to see where we're at.
We're going to do our best toget the best players and if by chance
we get lucky to have maybe oneof those returning guys does not get draft
or get what they want, we'llfigure it out from there. We'll be
fine, you know, like Isaid, it might You know, there's
some things the decisions you have tomake, but you let other guys know

(14:16):
that this is the possibility that happen. And we have forty roster spots,
so we've got to figure out what'sbest for the roster. Do you find
it to be an advantage with coachBulovsky's background in Major league Baseball and where
he has been within, you know, the major league hierarchy to be able
to have that background that you canlean on him and his contacts, to
be able to have that that insighton how the draft might break. Yeah,

(14:37):
we have a good feel he knowsa lot of people and we do
our best to get that information fromthem. As you know, the draft
is still a crazy process. Thingsthat you think could happen don't. Things
you thought wouldn't happen. Due it'sjust you just it's crazy. You feel
for some good kids because they putall their hopes into this and it doesn't
happen the way they want, andthen some are surprised things happen. So

(15:01):
his information is vital. The peoplehe knows is huge for us. But
that's just kind of just we haveto put the pieces of the puzzle together
to figure out do we do everythingpossibly could to make sure we prepared for
this, and there's going to besome things that you don't you think you
prepared for, but all of asudden it changes. So we had to
make sure we can we can changealso and do our best to try to
fill those voids the best we can. What we talked about the draft eligible

(15:24):
guys like you know nan Kill andConnor and Erman, but you also have
draft eligible guys that are are signedto come in. Obviously, Matthew Bardiwell
from Riverside City College. He's playingsummer ball in the MBL Draft League.
He's a National letter of intent signee. And Isaiah Thompson same thing. He's
playing in that same MLB draftbee.Last year, natur Alvarez was drafted fifth

(15:45):
round by the Atlanta Braves and endedup not coming to cow State Flotin.
So how difficult is it not onlynavigating the potential of returning players but then
also recruits and signees as well.Well, that's just part of the process,
the relationships we have to build withthese incoming players. They have to
believe in us and understanding that wewant what's best for them. Just like

(16:08):
you said, Nacho last year,he stuck to his number and he signed
because that's what he said would takehim away from coming to school. So
we do our research. We haveyou know, we have meetings with families
and the players to go over kindof where they're at, the process,
how it works. We do ourbest to educate them. Obviously, some
of these individuals have people that helpthem on the side too to educate them.

(16:29):
So it's a lot of stuff goingon, but we do our best
to show them why we feel thiscould be best fit for them, not
just for us selfishly, just fortheir growth and for life and for opportunity.
Also, we've seen a lot ofguys that went drafted late to be
top round picks out of cow Stateflour ten or undrafted at all to be
good round picks out of cow Stateflour ten. So we just tried to
do your best, educate them andthen do our best to make sure our

(16:52):
roster is covered. And that's thetough part is you put faith in some
of these family and if they stickto their number, are great. If
they don't, then that could hurtyou and possibly you can lose a couple
of good players because of it,And that's the tough part. Well,
I saw on Twitter that in aradio interview Cliff Godwin, East Carolina,

(17:14):
let it slip the kelst Florton's goingto be playing in the twenty four Keith
Leclair Classical in Greenville. Can youshare any details on how that came about.
I think I know a couple ofpeople over there, so maybe see
if they want her to play.So now I talked to him, they're
looking for a team, and Isaid, we'd love to come out there.
I'd love for our guys experience that. I think Fullton's been out there

(17:37):
many years ago, but I thinkit's a great experience for us to go
across country to a great program. It's a great environment, great fans,
and for us to compete with youknow, I think it'll be three teams
you see, you and two otherteams just to get them. You just
get that feel they need to gothrough that experience that that's important here kelsy
Fulton, as you know, isto go through these experiences. When you
come to conference, you feel likeyou've had some challenges, some things that

(18:02):
the guys have gone through to helpthem compete in the Big West at a
high level. And then speaking aboutscheduling, obviously TCU was a little bit
of a surprise because the stars alignedthat they're bye week and the Big West
by week for Fourton kind of aligned. Is there is there any chance that
they might be able to come backand you know, do a home in

(18:23):
a way like we've been already thereand come back here. We're trying to
get them, but as you know, so I mean some people's schedules are
three year in advance right now,so we're still working on next year's schedule.
We have a good amount of itdone. And then like I said,
TCU, we're trying to get themout here and we're trying to go
back there. But like I said, it's been tough. Everyone's schedule is

(18:45):
different, and then when you haveother tournaments going on, other things,
especially with us having a conference tournament, now we only really get the four
weeks starting in twenty twenty five wasout the conference tournament. So after next
year we only get the first fourweeks. Then it's going to be eleven
weeks of conference in the conference tournament, so we won't have a bye week,
a non conference scheduled, you know, weekend. I'll be here first

(19:07):
four weekends and that's it. Soa few questions about college baseball in general,
and then we'll get back into morespecific about typan baseball recently saw LSU
win the national championship with a mixof high profile and highly coveted transfer portal
guys Tommy White, Paul Skeins alongwith homegrown guys like Dylan Cruz. With
the pervasiveness of name, image andlikeness as a recruiting tool, combined with

(19:30):
increased transfer portal movement, how cana program like kelste Fullerton compete on a
level plane surface for transfer portal guysand recruits. Well, we understand what
our resources are, but at theend of the day, we have a
lot of people that care about theprogram. So we're doing our best as
a staff right now of and theAthletic Department is looking to see how we

(19:52):
can do things. Every state hasits own laws about the NIL, so
we're working hard. I think we'regonna have of you know, we're working
with our athletic department to find waysso we can do that. We're trying
to figure out how we can goabout possibly having that be beneficial to us.
Of if people want to help outour players or what have you,
then that can happen. It's notsomething that you know, through compliance you

(20:15):
can do it. So we're gonnahave to do our best to kind of
come up with the athletic department tosee how we can go about it in
the manner that can help not justus, but all athletics. And it
might be not as much as someof these programs, as you know,
but it's going to be something thatwe'll do our best to compete and show
that. Obviously, being a statesystem, we feel like, you know,

(20:36):
there's not a lot of costs incertain areas, and so we are
working right now to continue to educateourselves how we can make this benefit us
and if it's not at the levelthat some of the bigger schools. We're
not worried about that. We're tryingto find a way how can it help
benefit us athletic authoric department, butalso baseball too, So we are brainstorming
NonStop as a staff to figure outhow we can move forward with this.

(20:57):
We'll speaking of the transfer portal.Number of guys from last year's team are
in the portal. But we've alsoseen that I believe his name is Jared
Snyder, the catcher from One BeachState. We're able to convert a dirtbag
to come be a Titan. Canyou speak a little bit about about him
coming over via the transfer portal.Well, again, we are looking at
our needs, and you always lookat your needs in the roster, and

(21:18):
that's why we just we don't jumpin the portal and just jump in the
portal. We felt we needed acatcher. We feel Erman is going to
be one that's going to be signingwith Max Ortega and some guys coming in.
We just wanted to make sure wehad the catching death we wanted.
We saw it was in the porter, in the portal, and so what
we did just do our homework andkind of gather information about him. But

(21:42):
you know what happened in his yearslong beach as high school. People that
knew him, and there's a lotof positive things that are said on him,
and so we did our homework. We felt it would be a good
fit. We saw some video onhim and met with him and his dad
and they liked everything. We likedeverything, and you know, it feels
a good for him to continuously growand become a better baseball player. So

(22:03):
we're excited for him to be onon the team. We're talking about a
little bit more about transfer portal. This is this is that time? And
I don't know when When does thewindow close? What's the actual day?
Think it's next week? When guysgonna stop going in there? Does it?
Can they not transfer? I meanthey can. There's there's a date
in a time when they can enter, and then there's a date in a

(22:25):
time where they have to be pulledout. I don't know exactly. I
know next week the last it's thelast day they can enter the portal.
I'm not sure how long can gountil you continuously you can recruit. I
should know, but I don't,But I'll check into that later today to
get that figured out. Okay,so last time this year j Johnson,
LSU were making pretty big moves andannouncement signing guys like the ones that I

(22:48):
previously mentioned. But today it seemslike tone of Vitello and Tennessee they've taken
a page from the same playbook andthey're making big waves in the transfer portal?
Does college baseball feel a little bitlike MLB the agency now that the
transferport is open, and you know, teams like the SEC are essentially like
the Yankees, the Red Sox,the Dodgers, and whoever has the biggest
check book is the one that wins. That's what it seems like. That's

(23:10):
what it seems like. It's goingon not having you know, I know
people throughout the US and you heara lot of stories as coaches, we
all talk and kind of gather informationfrom each other. You hear a lot
of interesting stories that are going onout there about the tactics of people doing
it and the reality is with otherresources and they're doing it right. Then

(23:30):
again, you have ways where peoplecan find better opportunities for themselves so to
speak, and get a chance toput themselves in a financially good situation,
get school paid for, then obviouslyput themselves hopefully in a good position to
get drafted. So it is different. We're doing our best to adjust,
but baseball is I'd like to seehow much further this is going to go?

(23:52):
Is it? You know? It'sit's very competitive right now as you
can see, and right now peoplethought the more resources are pushing hard to
get what they want from a financialstandpoint. That's what it looks like and
sounds like. So we're into ourbest and keep guys with the right reasons
here, and then we're still workingeducate ourselves how we can find a way

(24:14):
to make nil something that's benefiting ourplayers also, not our players, but
athletic department also. So I'll endwith this having a winning season and going
to the postseason in your second yearat the Helm, what can you build
upon heading into next season? Aswe all want to we want consistency,
We want consistency in our culture, how we go about things playing the game

(24:37):
of baseball. Is it? Dowe expect this our second year? No,
doesn't mean that we had low standardsor goals. We didn't. It
was just the guys did a greatjob of coming together and they're a great
group of guys to be around.Next year might be we might have to
be more patient as a fan basebecause again, if we lose all our
returning guys, the bats that wehave and the guys were recruiting did it

(25:00):
could be younger. So and onthe mound, I think we have some
guys, you know, with theAvin Yates coming back and hopefull Chris Rodriguez
can come back, be healthy, and then with a lot of incoming guys,
there might be some patients that peopleneed to have to see us grow
and so we can figure out what'sbest. And that's kind of just from
us looking at the roster and wherewe're at. So we like what we

(25:22):
have. It's just like said,we have to do our best to figure
everything outcome by conference and continuously growheading into that. But we're excited,
you know, our goals are continuouslygoing to compete at a high level.
Obviously we're shooting for you know, postseason and competing for the Big West title.
But as you know, it's notlike saying we have minimal standards.
I think we have high standards. It's just continuously getting the guys to grow

(25:45):
and keep on understanding what our visionis. And I think we had the
right returning guys coming back, andwe believe and we like the incoming guys
what they're all about too. Sowe're excited, like I said, but
we just know that's gonna be somethere'll be some bumps and bruises, so
to speak, while we're exciting forthe growth of these guys and who can
come in or compute for jobs, because there'll be some jobs that are open
there for guys to take. Thanksfor listening to the fifteen hundred forty four
