Det er nat. Der ligger en ung kvinde på gulvet i sin lejlighed. Med et tomt blik stirrer hun op i loftet. Caroline hedder hun. Den næste dag er lejligheden tom. På hospitalets akutafdeling møder den unge kvinde op. Hun har mistet sine minder og sit sprog, og kan næsten ingenting selv. Det bliver begyndelsen på tre års indlæggelse på psykiatrisk afdeling. Som årene går, kommer Caroline langsomt men sikkert i tanke om hvem hun var - og om de oplevelser, der gjorde, at hun til sidst kollapsede - og forsvandt.
