Som vidunderbarn inden for klassisk klaver, gør den unge Lotte Kærså oprør mod sine forældre. Hun forelsker sig i skolelæreren Poul, læser til pædagog, hører jazz, og snart skal en helt ny form for musikundervisning finde vej til landets skoler. Hun bliver bannerfører for et nyt syn på børn som skabende og sociale individer, og skriver en række sange, som i dag har klassikerstatus. Lottes sønner spiller med, og drengene kommer til at stå bag nogle af 1980'ernes største pop-succeser - Sneakers, Danseorkestret og Moonjam. I dag, 90 år gammel, er 'Lotte Kærså og Græsrødderne' aktuel med et album nye sange.
