Ben Johnson se tornaria o novo campeão olímpico e novo recordista mundial com 9'79, um tempo inimaginável para um corredor na época. Porém, o inimaginável também aconteceu fora das pistas. Ben Johnson foi pego no exame antidoping três dias depois e forçado a devolver a medalha de ouro olímpica, numa das maiores controvérsias da história do esporte.
