Beth Bobbitt (00:10):
Welcome to A New
American Town presented by Visit
Bentonville.
I'm your host, Beth Bobbitt, and today we're excited to speak
with Holland Hayden, with theScott Family Amazeum, on how you
can have the best family visitto Bentonville.
This episode is for anyonetraveling to Northwest Arkansas
for a spring visit looking forfun activities exhibitions.
Holland, you have a really funjob promoting amazing activities
(00:36):
and exhibitions at the Amazeumand you serve families from all
over the country.
Welcome back to the podcast.
Thank you for having me.
Of course, thanks for beinghere.
So a lot of people may not know.
You have 50,000 square feet ofspace right now for learning and
exhibitions.
Some of the listeners areprobably aware, but you are
expanding so we'll get into thata bit later.
(00:57):
Very exciting, but let's firsttalk about the Amazeum how it
evokes curiosity and hands-onlearning yeah, so how long have
you been at the Amazeum?
How it evokes curiosity andhands-on learning yeah, so how
long have you been at theAmazeum?
Holland Hayden (01:06):
I've been there
about two and a half years and I
have enjoyed every minute of it.
It is such a joyful place andit really provides some amazing
inspiration for adults, asyou're watching kids learn and
play.
Beth Bobbitt (01:19):
Yeah, and it's
hard to believe, but you've been
around for 10 years.
This is the 10th anniversaryyear, yes, so what kind of
celebrations do we?
Holland Hayden (01:28):
have planned
Well, first of all, the fact
that the Scott Family Amazeumhas been around for 10 years is
wonderful.
It is a reflection of thecommunity, because they are the
ones who wanted it, and it'ssuch an amazing amenity for
Northwest Arkansas and for allof our visitors for Northwest
Arkansas and for all of ourvisitors.
And we've had 10 years ofcuriosity, 10 years of hands-on
(01:49):
learning, activities,exhibitions, but really creating
that lifelong love of learningis what we're really leaning
into.
Beth Bobbitt (01:54):
Yeah, yeah, not
just for kids, no adults too.
Holland Hayden (01:58):
Yeah, that's so
true.
I mean really it's for everyage.
Yes, pradle through career.
Beth Bobbitt (02:04):
My favorite event
all year is the UNGALA, so
we're never too old to play andlearn.
So tell us about theMeasurement Rules exhibition
which I think just opened, yeah.
Holland Hayden (02:15):
So it's here
through May 11th.
Measurement Rules is sponsoredby 3M and it is a really fun
exhibition hands-on.
Of course, that talks aboutvarious measurements.
Measurements might not sound sofun, I promise you it is.
So it's in length, it's time,it's volume.
One of my favorites is to seehow many chickens you weigh.
(02:37):
That's a lot of fun you get tomeasure your foot and see how
tall you are.
In your feet there's somethings where you're pouring rice
.
You can turn around and try andsay five Mississippis on
exactly five seconds.
It's a really fun exhibitionfor really kids of all ages.
There are things for thoselittler ones and then there's
kids.
I took my 10-year-old there andhe really enjoyed it as well.
(02:59):
So it's a fun exhibition thatteaches about volume and weight
and time and measurements andyour rules, your measurement
rules.
Beth Bobbitt (03:10):
You're tricking
these kids because they don't
know they're learning, but theyare.
Holland Hayden (03:14):
You know what?
That's a super good point, because kids learn by having fun
and they learn quicker whenthey're having fun.
And those hands-on moments arewhat really spur that curiosity
and continue to have them askingadditional questions.
Okay, I can say fiveMississippis, I wonder if I can
say ten.
You know, yeah, I can weigh.
How many chickens do I weigh?
(03:35):
How many dogs do I weigh?
So asking those additionalquestions is really what we're
going after, that's so cool,yeah.
Beth Bobbitt (03:42):
What else might a
visitor expect?
So if they're planning a tripand maybe have never been to
Northwest Arkansas or theAmazeum, what can you expect?
How do you prepare them?
Holland Hayden (03:51):
So, the Amazeum
has a number of different areas.
There's areas for kids undertwo years old.
There is a tinkering hub, againsponsored by 3M, where some of
those older ones can.
Right now we're doing paperquilling.
We have lots of differentactivities that are a little bit
more detailed and good forthose older kids.
But we also have a wonderfulart studio, an area called Lift
(04:12):
Load and Haul, where you canwork together to move blocks up
the side of the wall and thensend them back down on a
conveyor belt.
And then one of my favorites isWater Amazements, which I will
say pro tip (04:25):
do that last.
Yeah, yeah Good call yes If youcould do water amazements last.
It is such a fun area for kidsand for parents to even get a
little bit of time to sit andrest, because kids get really
involved and into it.
Yeah, so it's a good littlespace.
Beth Bobbitt (04:43):
I love that.
Good tips.
We have been to the Amazeum alot recently because my
daughter's a Girl Scout and soyou really take care of Girl
Scouts and plan these activitiesand badge nights and there's a
lot happening on that front.
Holland Hayden (04:59):
Yeah, we do.
We work with Scouts and withGirl Scouts.
Actually, we work with a lot ofschools and specific programs
like 4H.
We are open to a lot ofdifferent partnerships.
But yeah, with young girls it'sreally fun.
Sometimes we'll do a STEAMnight for Girl Scouts and again
get them involved so that theyare encouraged on their STEAM
(05:21):
journeys, because that's what wewant we want more young girls
interested in STEAM and STEM.
Beth Bobbitt (05:26):
Yes, I love it.
So talk to us a little bitabout what's coming up with
Spring Break specifically Arethere still camps open and what
else?
Holland Hayden (05:34):
Spring Break
camps are sold out, but we have
lots of summer camps, of course, available.
We are celebrating 10 years ofspring breaks, so we're doing
everything a little bit bigger, you know, we're going to have an
area for you to take pictureswith our 10 year sign, and then
we'll have lots of variouspop-ups with our play
facilitators, which are thosewho facilitate the play on the
(05:55):
museum floor.
They're not going to show youhow to do everything, but they
might say here, let me bringthis additional activity, let's
do sand flowers, let's trysomething, and they're kind of
related to 10 years.
So that's a lot of fun.
And then we have some likedifferent product launches that
we're doing Our Zing earringsthat we're working with some
local makers on.
We're working with Slimely andSanderly, which is a group which
(06:18):
is two young girls that are 11and 12 that are making a Zing
slime kit for us.
So having those productlaunches is really fun and,
honestly, this year we're reallyjust excited to tell our
10-year story.
Beth Bobbitt (06:30):
Yeah, and it's
hard to imagine you're doing so
much for the community already.
It's hard to imagine expandedofferings and space.
But talk to us a little bitabout the timeline and what
phase you're in on the expansioncampaign.
Holland Hayden (06:45):
Sure, yeah, well
we're in the public phase of
our capital campaign, so we'restill raising money, but our
intention is to break groundbefore the end of summer and
that is going to be on our firstphase.
So it is our Early LearningAdvancement Center Advancement
Center.
It's 11,850 square feet and ithas a hangout area, a cafe, a
(07:08):
model classroom and space forthe public to enjoy.
So we are very excited about it.
It really focuses on thoseearly learners, which is zero to
six years old.
That's where all thatdevelopment takes place.
Those first formative years areso important and unfortunately,
sometimes with child care andeducational gaps, we know that
(07:29):
we need to come in and fillthose educational gaps, fill
those social gaps, fill thoseinteractive gaps.
So that's one of the reasonsthat the Amazium is really
leaning into.
That early childhood space isso that we can provide an area
for the community and visitorsalike.
Beth Bobbitt (07:43):
Yeah, Do you know
someone who'd love to learn and
play at the Amazeum?
Share this episode with themand let us know if it sparked
conversation.
We're here for you every stepof the way as you plan your trip
to Bentonville For more springactivities, go to the show notes
or Visit Bentonvillecom.
We want to know how we cansupport you and I know one way
(08:04):
is through the UnGala event.
That's, talk to us about whatwe can expect.
Holland Hayden (08:11):
Oh, the UnGala
is so much fun.
I say UnGala.
Beth Bobbitt (08:13):
You say UnGala,
you say however you want to,
Tomato tomato.
I know exactly UnGala, UnGala.
Holland Hayden (08:17):
It is April 25th
, it is presented by Nabholz and
it truly is a fundraiser unlikeothers at Northwest Arkansas.
Do not wear fancy clothesunless you want them ruined,
because we're going to get onsome 24-volt racers.
We get on some 24-volt racers,we're going to race around the
parking lot.
We might pour some molten metal, we'll have lots of different
interactive stations and it'sall for adults and it's no kids
(08:39):
around, so you can really letloose and have a great time.
But it is our biggestfundraiser of the year and while
that is a huge fundraiser, it'sgreat for operations.
Of course, we still have ourcapital campaign going on as
well, so we just need somefinancial support to continue
our dreams in.
Beth Bobbitt (08:57):
Northwest
Arkansas, and big and small I
mean just through memberships,absolutely.
I know that that keeps thelights on, so talk to us a
little bit about the benefits ofbeing a member.
Holland Hayden (09:07):
Well, we, are
close to 6,000 members, which is
really great, and it's atestament to what a good job our
membership team does.
They have the opportunity toregister early for a lot of
programs, including camps, whichis a big deal because our camps
do sell out sometimes, sohaving that two to three week
extra buffer is really nice.
(09:29):
They're usually a little bit ofa discount and of course you can
come and play free all year andbring your family, depending on
the size of a discount.
And of course you can come andplay free all year and bring
your family, depending on thesize of your membership.
And of course we have memberevents as well to show our
appreciation.
But they're really ourlifeblood at the museum and keep
us going and we want to do thebest things we can for their
community, but especially forour members, yeah, and they're
(09:50):
very affordable, absolutely weactually have one.
I believe it starts at $79 forthose brand new parents.
So it would just be like for amom and a dad and then the child
under two is free.
So very affordable, and then wego up to you know $500 plus for
(10:12):
our contributing members, right, wonderful.
Beth Bobbitt (10:13):
So switching
gears a little bit.
We ask all our guestsquestions.
How long have you been in,remind me?
Well, I've been here about twoand a half years.
I've been in
Northwest Arkansas forever.
Holland Hayden (10:23):
I've been in for
a couple of years.
Beth Bobbitt (10:24):
So if you could
kind of think back, maybe to
when was sort of new, or withyour family, what is like a
really vivid core memory thatyou have of ?
Holland Hayden (10:37):
I love the
Crystal Bridges campus.
Being on the Crystal Bridgescampus and part of that area is
so wonderful and taking my sonto those trick-or-treats at
Crystal Bridges is really a lotof fun.
We've gone for a number ofyears and that's the only.
Trick-or-treats at CrystalBridges is really a lot of fun.
We've gone for a number of yearsand that's the only
(10:57):
trick-or-treat he asked to go tonow so that's something that's
definitely core memories for me,hopefully for him, and you know
we have pictures of him dressedup inside the museum outside on
the grounds everywhere, andit's really a joy to look at and
I love that.
Beth Bobbitt (11:11):
you know you do,
throughout the year, have a lot
of collaborations and ongoingpartnerships with Crystal
Bridges.
Yeah, absolutely.
Holland Hayden (11:19):
I mean, we're
all in the same area and we're
all in the same thing.
We want people to come toBittenville, we want people to
be curious, we want them to belearners throughout their lives.
So we are definitelycollaborating with everyone on
the Crystal Bridges campus.
Beth Bobbitt (11:33):
It's amazing
their lives, so we are
definitely collaborating witheveryone on the crystal bridges
campus.
Amazing, so local crush.
Similar kind of question but isthere a secret spot or a place
that you really love to go to,outdoors, indoors, wherever,
with your family?
Holland Hayden (11:45):
yes, where I do
I.
There is a spot behind umchardsPark and it sounds like it's
just right there, but it's closeto.
It's still close to Amazium, because I like to be able to
walk places.
But I mean honestly.
Orchards Park is beautiful andI love watching all the dogs
(12:07):
play and the kids play.
And it's just.
It's a great lookout, but Iwill say one of the best views
in Northwest Arkansas is at thetop of the parking deck.
That is next to Awesome.
Oh yeah, that's true.
That's next to the Scott FamilyAmazium.
That's on the Crystal Bridgescampus.
It is an absolutely beautifulview and it's very quiet.
Beth Bobbitt (12:28):
Yeah.
Holland Hayden (12:29):
And I like to go
up there because that's a
gorgeous.
It sounds so strange to sayit's a gorgeous parking deck.
Beth Bobbitt (12:33):
Right, it sounds
so strange to say it's a
gorgeous parking deck.
Holland Hayden (12:35):
But it's a
gorgeous parking deck with the
art and the lighting and theview is wonderful so I did a
good job activating it.
Beth Bobbitt (12:42):
And then you know
, with spring, everything's
blooming and it's just going tobe even more beautiful.
So great answers.
Well, what else haven't weshared about the Amazium that
you want to talk about?
I just encourage people to come.
Holland Hayden (12:54):
We always have
different traveling exhibits.
It is a great day trip too tojust pop in to Northwest
Arkansas, pop out and honestly, you can also come in in the
morning, go grab lunch maybe, take a little cool down and come
back so you can come in and outof the Amazium throughout the
day.
But I I do encourage people,even if they're like, well, I
(13:16):
don't know, I've been to otherchildren's museums, I've been to
other science museums.
I really would love them to comeand see how ours is and to see
just the enthusiasm and the joyof those play facilitators that
love working with families, loveworking with families, love
working with kids and they getto see those aha moments all day
(13:37):
and it keeps them going and youcan tell, you know you are good
at your job.
Beth Bobbitt (13:41):
