(00:00):
Brett, your mark is doubling down on declaring that he wants
a 5 + 11 format for the 2026 College Football Playoff and
beyond. Let's talk about what that means
and why it is that the Big 12 athletic Direct or athletic
Direct commissioner is pushing for this.

(00:26):
What's up kid folk, it's RJ Young.
I am not on a step mill. If this is your first time
watching, adapt and respond. Thank you for joining us here.
We talk college football year round.
If that is something you're into, go ahead and hit that
subscribe button like this videoand answer the question in the
comments below. Do you want a 5 + 11 model or do
you want this 4 + 4 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 BS?

(00:47):
Or you just want, you know, the best 16 teams in college
football to play against each other in a tournament for the
national championship. Let me know the comments below.
I'm going to unpack what your mark is doing as we go through
Big 12 media days. Day one, Day 2.
Today is day one. We'll talk a bit about that in
another segment. I'm also going to remind you we

(01:08):
got an audio podcast on Apple and Spotify.
And if you are cool enough to goto Apple, Spotify and leave us a
five star review, I will send you one of these stickers.
Just fill out the form in the description below after you do
that. OK, so 5 + 11, it is the five
highest ranked conference champions plus the next best 11

(01:29):
or the at large bids. It feels like the fairest way
for us to decide who gets into the College Football Playoff and
who does not if and when it goesto 16 teams.
We've already got a change from the first year of the 12 team
playoff to straight seeding in this year's playoff.
Mostly because Greg Sankey decided to, you know, throw a

(01:51):
fit, throw a tantrum because SMUand Clemson got in.
Clemson being a conference champion, by the way, over in
Alabama, more SMU than Clemson. But you're also looking at this
from the Big 12 standpoint is they got 16 teams and everybody,
everybody caught 2 losses, at least two losses in Big 12

(02:11):
conference play last year. They only got one team into the
playoffs in Arizona State. And Arizona State acquitted
itself very, very well, say nothing of they returned damn
near everybody to that team. But scataboo.
And people expect Sam Levitt to be the offensive player of the
year. That's quarterback, right?
That was a guy that was not going to start at Michigan
State, transfers to Arizona State, turns into a world

(02:34):
beater. Say nothing of the guys he's got
like Jordan Tyson and I think Kenny Dillingham does not get
enough credit for the turn around.
Matter of fact, Arizona State, we'll talk about this.
They they retired the preseason media poll all by themselves.
They did that. But your mark is pitching 5 + 11

(02:54):
because he wants two things to know the Big 12 or Big 12.
The Big 12 is a premier conference.
Second thing is this is really about trying to make this as
fair for everybody as you can. Usually you take the stuff with
a grain of salt because the commissioners are going to put
their conferences first, second,third, 4th, 5th.

(03:16):
If they can make a playoff that would just feature their teams.
Many of them might even think about it, to say nothing of how
that might torpedo the sport. It's with the SEC feels like
it's going to trying to do the Big 10s less enthusiastic about
that and Big 12 ACC are going like, hey guys, we realize that
we're down now, but come on, this is ridiculous.
And it kind of is because I would love to see 2-3 teams from

(03:40):
the Big 12 get into the playoff in the 16 team league because 16
team playoff because they're that good.
Like through one through 16, there is no better competent
competitive conference in football.
There just isn't like the top end of the SEC and the top end
of the Big 10 are going to be the top end of our sport for

(04:01):
some time. But when you get to
8910111213141516, I mean, the Big 12 is right there.
Like there's not really going tobe in Mississippi State or until
last year, a Vanderbilt, right? Like you're going to get
somebody that can play every single week.
I'll give you an example of this.

(04:23):
Up until the since Cincinnati went to the Big 12, it was the
class of the Group of Five. Remember, it's the only team to
make the College Football Playoff in the 14 format as a
Group of Five team right now. They got handled by Alabama, but
the point remains. You're also talking about a
program that's been really trying to fight its way back

(04:45):
since losing Luke Fickle to Wisconsin.
Scott Shatterfield ain't having a good time, but they are
improving, right? Five and seven is not good
enough, but they got enough. Brendan Sorsby can be for
Cincinnati what Sam Levitt was. I know this because he went for
426, four TDs and a pick againstTexas Tech.
He also led the conference in rushing TDs last year.

(05:08):
They'll got they'll get a guy inEvan Pryor that I think can roll
and quiet as it is kept. You've got 13 years of
consecutive 1000 yard backs at Cincinnati, regardless of who
the head coaches and they just opened $135 million football
facility like 2 weeks ago. Scott Satterfield feels like
he's got a team and I think he does right.

(05:28):
But that's a team that I would pick to finish near the end.
Central Florida, it's going to be a little bit tougher, but if
you know, we've seen what Scott Scott Frost been able to do
there before now, it is a totally different landscape than
the one that he was in when he took Central Florida at 13 O
2017 and claimed to a national championship.
And he's inherited a team that won just two games in Big 12
conference play last year and four is its fewest since 2013.

(05:52):
But you can flip it real quick and he plans to.
We got 68 new guys on that roster.
Don't know who they're going to be, how they're going to be.
We do know that they get a Jacksonville State.
It's probably going to test them.
Could be money in the bad game if they beat them going away,
pick them to beat North Carolina.
They're off to three and oh, right, you could see this up and
down. Kansas State is a great example
of another team that I think just got left out like Iowa

(06:13):
State. Kansas State went nine and four
last year, finished tied for 8thin the Big 12 Conference, right?
It's, it's tough, but also you're going to have
opportunities to show just how good your conference is.
Early Baylor could be great. Dave Aranda believes this is his
most talented team that he's seen since he's been there.

(06:35):
This is year 6 for him, Year 7 for him.
Remember, 20 and 21, they won 12games.
They got SMU and Auburn to open.If they beat both of those
teams, lookout, man, we're talking about Baylor competing
for a College Football Playoff spot because they will have
beaten the team that made the playoff in an Auburn team that
people expect to be better than they were last year, to say
nothing of representing the SEC.So that's two powerful teams on

(06:57):
the schedule. I also think that this is a spot
where Brett Yormark believes that he's got the public's
public on his side, and I think he does.
None of us want to see anybody get automatic bids.
We think that's bad. They're calling that an NFL
model, but it's not an NFL model.

(07:19):
NFL model is, did you win your division and are you top of the
wild card? After that, all bets are off.
Just ask. So ask Dallas Cowboys what it
means to make the playoffs like nothing.
My Dallas Cowboys have been garbage basically since 1995 and
I was. I was 8 years old the last time
Dallas Cowboys won a won a SuperBowl.

(07:41):
I turned 38 later this month. Dog, I'm damn near 40.
What I'm saying is get to the playoffs doesn't mean Jack, but
it does in our sport for a couple of reasons.
A the home field advantage is better in our sport than it is
anywhere else. Period.
Full stop. The amount of money that you can
make is akin to what you do in Formula One.
So I'm going to use this technology because I think it's

(08:02):
going to make sense to you. So go with me here.
Formula One, there's a big pile of money that gets spread out
across the 10 teams on the grid. You finish your first place, you
get the biggest share, you get the biggest share.
You get to put more money into all the things that matter.
Now there is a cost cap, but it really is something you can

(08:25):
circumvent and move around and you're going to get the better
drivers that can make the cars do what they need to do.
If you can afford to go get Max Verstappen, it doesn't matter
that you put it in a Red Bull. That's might be the fourth
fastest car on the grid. He'll put it on pole at
Silverstone like he's just that good.
That's what you can afford to do.
You can go get better things that don't go into your cost cap
right down the order. You could see the worse it gets.

(08:48):
That's how it works. And in college football, we got
a big pile of money that's goingto be distributed among
conferences and Notre Dame depending on where you finish in
the College Football Playoff. This is also, this is also a
billion dollar business. Consider ESPN is paying $8

(09:09):
billion for the rights to the College Football Playoff, and
that money is getting distributed to college football
athletic directors, commissioners, So for so on,
we're not just talking about whogets the playoff, we're talking
about who gets to make some money here.
And if the Big 12 get 3 teams inthree more chances, that slot
machine that you get to progressfurther, if you do with Ohio

(09:32):
State, didn't win national championship, you change the
tenor of your conference top to bottom because that money gets
spread out across the conference.
That's why you are in these leagues and that's why people
want to see value added to a league rather than just adding
teams to a league. This is why it took so long for
Cadillac to earn an invitation to F1, 'cause they ain't got to
let you in, right? This is also why it is important

(09:56):
that you are not just building your conference out.
To build your conference out, you need to build it with teams
that you know can provide you some financial advantages as
well as on the field advantages, particularly in football.
Why the PAC 12 conference champions going away really
upset the apple cart like it upset the board because we don't
have to consider that league anymore.

(10:16):
And that was a league that had SCSUCLA, Oregon, Washington, you
name it, right, all the way down.
Now that league is State conference.
It's a Group of Five or Group of6 league now.
That's the difference. Meanwhile, the Big 12 is able to
continue to hold itself togetherand add some really good value.
Teams like Houston, right? Teams like Central Florida,

(10:36):
teams like Cincinnati, teams that would have been in the
American five years ago. This is what you're after.
This is what he's trying to do. Yeah, this is going to be fun.

(10:57):
Who's going to win the Big 12? Like dead up, dead ass.
Who's going to win the Big 12 Conference?
Tell me in the comments below. I got to pick.
I ain't ready to put it out there yet because I'm
percolating and I'm working on this 136.
I'm also going to take this opportunity to remind you that
we have an audio podcast on Spotify and Apple.

(11:18):
And if you're kind enough to leave us a five star review, go
ahead and hit that link in the description below.
After you do the five star review on Apple, Spotify, and
I'll send you one of these niftystickers.
Some people be hating on the stickers.
I love a good sticker dog, especially one for free and one
that I'm getting a handwritten note from.
Dude show I'd be watching, but that's just me.
Also working on the ultimate 136.

(11:39):
Getting ready to file that thinglater this week.
For those of y'all that somehow think because the show changed
up that I don't work at Fox anymore, you are wrong.
Colonel Sanders. I'm National College football
analyst at Fox Sports. The top 25, the 136, all those
things are coming. You can still read my work at
Fox Sports. Just don't do the show jobs the
same. All right, chill out.

(12:01):
Other part about this is means that I'm keeping an eye on all
of it because that's that's my job.
My job is to watch as much college football as is played.
So when it comes to things like the 136 comes to things like the
top 25, you understand that ain't nobody watch more college
football than I have. Just just did what it is like
when they got the Tuesday night matching that be coming on right

(12:21):
after the playoff. Your man's be watching that too,
right? Some of these teams never end up
in the top 25. It doesn't matter because the
136 comes around and I need to be able to talk about Bowling
Green as well as I can talk about Ohio State.
Bowling Green that is in Ohio, not Western Kentucky, which is
in Bowling Green, KY. All right, so we had Arizona

(12:42):
State, Baylor, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Iowa State,
Kansas State, Texas Tech all show up for media days day one.
But Brett, your mark kind of stole the show with his opening
remarks because as it did in theprevious segment, he doubled
down on the 5 + 1 format. That's really the biggest take
away. The 5 + 1 format is the five

(13:02):
highest ranked champions, conference champions plus the
next 11, right? So figure 6 and 6 or 6 and 10,
Excuse me, because Notre Dame probably gets one of these at
large birds, right? Because they don't play in a
conference. They play an ACC schedule in
this open marriage, which is kind of strange for a Catholic
University. But you know what?
It's strange times. Revenue sharing in name, image

(13:24):
and likeness. Immediate transfer portal.
Stuff that Scott Frost really never got to do at Central
Florida and probably sets him back like it did in Nebraska.
But we'll get that in a little bit.
I'm gonna start with Arizona State because they single
handedly retired the preseason media poll and the coaches poll
by themselves in your mark said.Look, we don't feel bad about

(13:45):
that. One way we think not just
Arizona State, but a bunch of our teams got disadvantaged by
this thing because with the intends to happen is folks that
don't cover the Big 12 take whatthe media and coaches have to
say about it and then filter that into their conversations as
they're doing their top 20 fives.
Remember, there's only about 60 people to get the vote in the AP
top 25. Perhaps some of them don't, you

(14:06):
know, cover the Big 12 regularly.
So when you see Arizona State was ranked dead last or pick
dead last, and they go and they win the conference championship
and they're your only selection, you're going to start pointing
fingers. And I think the easiest way for
them to point fingers and say, oh, we're just not going to let
you rank us or ask you to rank us anymore.

(14:26):
That's not what we're going to do it anymore.
And you know what, fine, right. That's we're getting closer and
closer to the kind of journalismand the kind of commentary that
you see in the UK, right where what people say and how they're
saying it is being investigated and or pointed out all the time.
Quotes are getting more difficult to come by.

(14:48):
So the things that you get to see and the people that you
trust inside the program have never been more important to the
work that is just trying good, good information, especially as
more of y'all are coming to bet on the games and we're seeing
how that is affecting sports allacross this country, right?
NBA is dealing with this in a way that college football been

(15:11):
dealing with it. Frankly, NFL hadn't had to deal
with the NFL has been really gearing up for this for a very
long time and they've got some really great apparatuses in
place to curtail people being stupid about betting and or
cheating right. We still got a cheating scandal.
We ain't even figured out when Michigan, right?
Arizona State though also has Sam Levitt returning and a bunch

(15:33):
of dudes not name scam Cam scataboo that are coming back.
Like if you think that they're good last year, they're probably
going to be good this year. Sam Levitt, offense player of
the year by some and I think Jordan Tyson has an opportunity
to be the best wide receiver in this league.
Kenny Dillingham knows what he has, he knows what he's up
against and I'm excited to see what the Sun Devils can do.
Can you run it back or was last year just a flash in the pan?

(15:56):
When they did make the playoff? They were good.
They were real good. They pushed Texas into the deep
water and damn near got to win. That's another reason why I
think you know the preceding themedia poll has gone away and why
you are Marcus pushing 5 + 11 ishe thinks you can get more than
one Big 12 team in there, right Conf champion, sure.
But I would love to have seen what happens if Iowa State or

(16:18):
BYU or Colorado or even Kansas State got an invitation to play
last year. What would have what would have
happened? Would they have been a better
spot than SMU? Well, that spot belongs to
Alabama. So people would think well in
the 16 team playoffs you still got room, right?
Could you do that and then what,if anything, do we expect from
the Big 12 going forward? Because I think when you

(16:39):
condense it, it is top to bottomtough.
Sixteen team league in the country, right?
That includes the SEC, which is top heavy as hell.
Like the Big 10 with 18 teams and the ACC is kind of there.
They got four or five teams I think are good and the rest are
just kind of bringing up the rear.
You get to the Big 12, it's a dogfight each and every week and
you know this because every single team in the Big 12 last

(17:02):
year caught 2 losses, right? And they were penalized for it
because the records were not that great.
Give me an example. Kansas State finishes nine wins,
9 and 4, right? Tie for 8th in the Big 12 and
they might win the league this year.
They're that good. They're that loaded.
Talk about them in a bit. So there's Arizona State,
Baylor, Dave Rand is not shy about it.

(17:23):
He believes it's the most talented team that he has ever
had at Baylor. Remember, man had a 12 and two
team 2021, OK, he has Jake Spavidol back to call and plays
with Sawyer Robertson. Remember, Sorry, Robertson
didn't even win the job coming out of camp.
Still past 3000 yards, 32 total TDs, 8 picks.
They're going to be good. Dave Randon took over calling

(17:45):
the defense again last year. It got better.
Matt Pollard is still there. They're building and they have
been building. And in the Big 12 particularly,
you've seen a commitment to recruiting high school and
Baylor is a great example of that.
They expect to be 7580% high school development just next
year, which is difficult thing to pull off because the transfer

(18:06):
portal is right there and name image of likeness is right there
and revenue sharing is right there.
But they've been able to do thisat Baylor, as you know, only
they could. I think Baylor, BYU, Notre Dame,
they got a built in advantage with the church behind them.
And there are some face where you just like like Catholic
faith. You grow up, you want to go play

(18:27):
at Notre Dame, right? You grew up a Church of Latter
Day Saints. You want to go play at BYU.
You grew up Baptist, probably want to go play at Baylor.
Drink a lot of doctor Pepper. BYU, I just mentioned Kalani
Stock is going into year 10. He turns 50 this year, but he's
going to earn it. This was supposed to be the Jake
Retzlaf show at BYU. It will not be.

(18:47):
He was accused of rape in a civil suit.
It was dismissed, but there was a violation of the honor code
which would have probably precipitated, according to Salt
Lake Tribune, A7 game suspensionfor retsof.
And he just said, you know, whatthe hell with that?
I'm going to the portal. I and I get it.
But now you got 2 quarterbacks that have played and no

(19:10):
quarterback that is thrown for more than 1400 yards in his
career. So you're looking at guys like
McKay Hillstead and Treon Borgayand Hank Bochmeier, true
freshman and trying to figure out who's going to win the job.
Nobody can tell right now. I just do know that LJ Martin's
going to get a lot of carry, a lot of touches.
He was 718 yards rushing last year.
He should be over 1000 this year.

(19:31):
If they find a quarterback that can actually facilitate some
sort of service to Chase Roberts.
He could be 1000 yard receiver. But it was the defense that
starred for BYU last year. It will be the defense that
stars for BYU this year. They were first in the league in
points per game, allowed 19.3 yards per game, allowed 308
turnovers, force 29. They were a defensive team that

(19:52):
happened to have a quarterback that could go get them a win
late. I don't expect that to change
much no matter who the quarterback is.
But eleven wins. Eleven wins.
Since Florida good luck like dead ass like I'm I'm doing my
1:36 and you know when you get to the power four teams that are
approaching pass rank 75 into 100 into 110 you looking at

(20:16):
Central Florida going brought inScott Frost trying to see if
they can't make that old thing new again.
First time he's going to be backthere since leaving 2017.
Went to Nebraska five years, it didn't go well.
Spend some time with Sean McVay and now he's back in Orlando.
But he's back in Orlando in a totally different environment.
Might as well be Earth 919 because it ain't Earth 616, you

(20:36):
know what I'm saying? When they won 13 games in a row
and beat Auburn in the Peach Bowl, there was no transfer
portal, there was no immediate eligibility, there was no name,
image and likeness, and there certainly was no revenue sharing
and such. Floors in the American, not in
the Big 12. Lot of stuff has changed.
They won two games in conferencelast year, 4 games total.

(20:57):
They have not won fewer than four games until 2013.
So like, they've been consistently good up until last
year. Gus Malzahn gets fired.
He's calling offense at Florida State.
Gus Malzahn, who thought the Central Florida could be a place
where you could turn them into asleeping giant as a powerful
team wanting him to do it. Also kind of serendipitous, I

(21:19):
think that it's Scott Frost. It takes over for Gus Malzahn
because Scott Frost beat Gus Malzahn at Auburn for that Peach
Bowl Championship. Pretty fun and pretty funny to
me, right? We'll see what they got.
They still don't know who the quarterback is going to be.
And frankly, I don't know that it's going to matter that much
if they can't run the ball well. And Miles Montgomery is going to
have to do it because RG Harvey was a monster last year.

(21:41):
They get Jacksonville State, they get another an FCS
opponent, not another. They get an FCS opponent.
And then North Carolina, where we get to find out just how good
or bad both of those teams are. Scott Frost, who actually played
for Bill Belichick with the New York Jets, so that'd be fun.
We'll see how that goes. Cincinnati is indicative of the

(22:02):
Big 12, man. This is a team or program, I
should say, that made the College Football Playoff in 2021
as a Group of Five team when it was 4.
Still four teams and different head coach Luke Fickle, right?
Different conference. The American, they moved to the
Big 12 and anything fun ever since.
They are three and 9, 3 and 9, five and seven.
I mean, Scott Satterfield is 8 and 16 at Cincinnati.

(22:24):
But they have reason to feel good about what they can do this
year because talk about a team that basically lost five games
by 1 score. So they are four games by 1
score. So they could just as easily
have been a nine win team. Brendan Stores becomes back.
I like a veteran quarterback. Usually veteran quarterbacks,
they can throw the ball all overthe yard to get better with age.
They do like fine lines. This dude threw for 426, four

(22:45):
TDs and a pick against Texas Tech last year.
Also led the conference in rushing TDs with 9.
Evan Pryor, former Ohio State tailback, he's probably going to
be the bell cow. And he's probably going to go
for 1000 yards because Cincinnati's had 1000 yard
rusher for 13 consecutive years.Doesn't matter who the head
coach is. They're running the football.
And Scott Satterfield loves to run the football.

(23:06):
So we'll see they open up against Nebraska at Arrowhead
Stadium. That could be a tremendous
victory for them because I expect Nebraska to be an 8910
win team this year given what the schedule is and given with
Dylan Rayola has meant to that program, Dana Hogerson calling
the plays. But it's it's it's going to be
it's going to be uphill. It's going to be uphill both
ways for Cincinnati in this Big 12.

(23:27):
Iowa State could have been Arizona State last year.
They just got absolutely thumpedin the Big 12 championship.
And then you got to see, oh, Arizona State was for real.
Now I wonder how many people aregoing to see Iowa State the same
way. You know, Matt, Matt Campbell,
who's one of my favorite coachesbecause the man got it up out

(23:49):
the mud. He loves, he loves a rough
football game, absolutely enjoysit.
Actually transferred as an All American from PIT to Mount Union
because he loved the way that dudes were running down the
highway and jogging together. Play for Larry Karis, a man who
described playing for him as take a fist, put it into gravel

(24:14):
and grind your fist into the gravel.
If you can do that and like it, you can play football for me
tough. And you know, Matt Campbell, who
told me, hey, at Iowa State, yougot to go up the rough side of
the mountain and I'm going to get goosebumps from my look.
Yes, yes, Lord. And with Rocco Beck, they got a

(24:35):
dude. They got a dude.
I know that there's not a lot ofpeople that see what's popping
off at Ames, see what's popping off at Jack Tri Stadium.
But maybe you will because Roccocan spin it and they'll be there
again at the end. I really like Kansas State, but
I really like Kansas State. Chris climbing is, you know,
been a consistent winner. They've won nine games in a row
the last three years. They went to Oklahoma and dumped

(24:56):
on them, right? It's it's here and there for
them. It's not dropping a game that
you shouldn't. It's beating everybody that you
should. It's Avery Johnson being 1 of
this, I believe, three players and a Power 4 to pass for 2700
yards and rush for over 600 yards.
If Dylan Edwards being fast, that makes them the fastest

(25:16):
backfield I think in this conference.
And I think that they're going to be pretty good in getting in
and out of play calls, right? I say that because there's a
change at offensive coordinator and it's a change that I very
much enjoy. The reason that I enjoy it is we
got ties to Oklahoma. We got ties to Texas Tech.

(25:37):
Yeah, Matt can do it. Matt's ready for this.
I don't know that Kansas State fans are familiar with his
movies, but when the offense is rolling, Matt can get it
rolling. Fasting.
We got to talk about Texas Tech and that money they be spending.
The problem with spending money like the way Texas Tech has been
spending money is that's all we going to talk about, dog.

(25:59):
Ask Ohio State what we talked about last year when we know
that you were willing to spend more than $10 million on a
roster in the portal. In the portal, we know that you
got Quinton Joyner from USC, Romello Height from Georgia
Tech, David Bailey from Stanford.
You were able to get Michael Hudson to come back.

(26:19):
Baron Morton's there if he can stay injury free.
You had Taj Brooks. Yeah, we expect you to.
We we expect you to be great. We really do.
And Joey McGuire accepts that. He wants that.
Cool. The one thing that people use to
recruit against us, he would sayis we haven't, we don't play Big
12 championships. That changes this year.

(26:41):
I would like to see it, my guy. I would like to see it.
Joey McGuire also. I mean, I got a bunch of coaches
in this league I really love, but I I love me some Joey
McGuire. For those of y'all that are
unfamiliar, he is Texas high school football royalty.
Like between him and Jeff Trailer, I don't think you can
talk about two dudes that peopleare pulling for more that coach
college football in the state ofTexas because of what they meant

(27:03):
to their high school programs. Matter of fact, Jeff Trailer
gave us GJ Kenny, GJ Kenny, headcoach at Texas State and my
classmate at TU, GJ Kenny, who is going to be one of those guys
like Texas State's going to havea hard time keeping a hold of
him. They go win 8910 games this year
in the Sunbelt. We'll see.

(27:23):
So that's day one. I think of these teams, I mean,
the only team that I feel comfortable just saying they're
not going to win the Big 12 championship is UCF after that
since Cincinnati. But everybody else, you could
see them being there at the end. It's that tight, It's that good.
Year in year you're out, week in, week out, you're going to

(27:46):
have games. Are they going to be top 25
matchups? No, but that's why the 5 + 11
model is 1 in which they're trying to go.
So now that we have done the bighonking, Big 12 media day one
recap, you let me know who do you think is going to win the
conference championship.
