(00:00):
Sonny Dykes said. He knew that Michigan would try
to steal their signs in 2022, and most of this is common
knowledge. What isn't is how this really
got to him and got us to a placewhere Michigan is awaiting a
decision from the NCAA Infractions committee.
(00:28):
What's up, kid? Folks, it's RJ Young.
I am not. On a step mill, if this is your
first time watching adapt and respond thank you for joining us
here we talk college football year round if that is something
you're into, go ahead and hit that subscribe button like this
video and. Answer the question.
In the comments below, do you think that if TCU was not tipped
(00:50):
off or didn't figure out very, very early that Michigan
stealing their signs? The a.
Texas Christian would have won that game because they did
5145B. That we would be some three
years later, still talking aboutthat game and what Michigan did
(01:10):
in it, in part because we learned the way in which
Michigan acquired those signals probably allegedly illegal.
I'm also going to take this opportunity to remind you we got
an audio podcast on Apple and Spotify and you guys have been
doing a really great job. I have stickers to send out.
(01:31):
I'm going to do a sticker mailbag here not too long from
here. But the reason I bring up the
stickers is. If you go to Apple and Spotify.
You leave us a five star review.I am going to send you one of
these stickers and a handwrittenthank you note because it means
that much to me. We're fast approaching 500
rating. On Apple.
It's very exciting. 200 ratings on.
(01:53):
Spotify and the downloads. Continue to go up, which tells
me you all like the longer form content at least over there on
Spotify and Apple and there are no ads on the show for the time
being most because I want you toenjoy it right.
That's it's a treat for you. It's the thing that you've asked
for that we wanted to provide here at anr.
So let's talk about sunny dice. What is that a Big 12 media days
(02:17):
to Brett Mcmurphy in a piece that was perfect for our Friday
morning. I'm looking at this and I'm
going, OK, we know a lot of this, but there's there's, it's
interesting to look at this now knowing what's.
Supposed to happen. In about 60 days time.
Talk about that in a bit, but let's go through it.
(02:38):
TCU entered the Fiesta Bowl as a7 1/2 point underdog to
Michigan, ends up winning that game, 5145.
Now, at media days, Texas Christian coach Sonny Dykes was
like, hey, look, very early on we got some Intel that, hey,
(03:00):
don't ask us how, but those guysgot your signals.
They, they know what they are. So you might think about, you
know, changing them. And Sonny gave that some really
good thought because it's comingfrom a reliable source.
So what did they do? And this is I love the football
gamesmanship of this. We changed some signs.
We left some the same. He said we found out early
(03:22):
enough for the game where we could change a lot of our
signals. And then we had some dummy
signals and some things where wechecked the dummy signal to a
signal that we knew they knew. I know that you know that I know
you know, and I want you to knowthat I know, you know that I
want you to know we got some favorable matchups because that.
And yeah, there was some big plays in the game.
(03:43):
Love that. This reminds me of a great story
involving Mike Leach and Kale Gundy.
Owe you Texas early on 1999, thefamous fake offensive play call
sheet left on the Texas sideline.
As they're going in, they just drop the sheet and they Texas
(04:04):
took the bait. So first call they went, they
gamble, they said, all right, here's the first call on the
fake play sheet. Here's what we're going to do
because we got a beater for the kind of defense we think they're
going to be in and there it is. Very quickly.
They threw out Mac Brown them threw out that fake play call
she because they knew they had been had they've been took,
they've been bamboozled, hoodwinked, run amuck, LED
(04:27):
astray. This is what he does.
It's that time of year in it. All right, So after that, you
know, you get your matchups, butyou got to exploit them and they
finish with 492 yards of offense.
I mean 4. 188 yards off, and excuse me, which is more than
Michigan was able to get againstOhio State, which is kind of
(04:48):
cool. They also ran the ball really,
really well against the team that hate you run the ball.
And then they rushed for 263 yards against what was one of
the best defenses in football in2022, particularly against the
run. We're talking about a team that
was allowing less than 100 yardsper game in a lot of these
cases, you know, you're going, hey guys, break our signals
(05:09):
during the game. That's what they do.
Brent Venables, head coach to Oklahoma, famous for being able
to look across sideline and get your signals very quickly, very
fast. And then you're just cooked
because there's no way of relaying until much later like
after he's got you for 3-4 playsdead to rights that they got the
signals and we got to figure something out.
So when he said at one point later in the in the game that
(05:33):
Michigan just decided not to go with it, that's the ultimate
thing of defeat because you basically told Connor Stallions
and then to have a seat, you're no longer you're a detriment.
You're not helping us, you're hurting us.
Please sit down over there. Every time that we think it's
past, they go run. Every time we think.
It's run. They go past in part because you
keep telling us what you think it's going to be and you're
wrong about it. So he's come on, continue going
(05:58):
on Texas Christian and Sonny Dice has done a really good job
of just kind of dodging all of this sign stealing conversation
going on the big 10/20/23 and throughout the country even up
until now, right? But the NCAA still hasn't,
right? The infraction committee hasn't
sent a ruling to Michigan on what it is that they're supposed
(06:18):
to do or not do as far as punishment or not punishment.
And they had that hearing last month, early June, expected to
know something 30 to 90 days, three months from June.
You know, you do your simple math July, August, September, we
would figure something out. I think they're going to time
this so that it gives Michigan just enough of an opportunity to
(06:40):
do something before the season starts.
But this is more about how we feel about the integrity of the
game, right? There are lots.
Of Michigan fans that watch thisshow I know this because they
show up to tell me off about heyit's not cheating we're just
stealing signs. Make better signs.
No it is cheating. NCAA bylaw 11 point 1.2 where
(07:08):
you are not allowed to advance scout.
Then that means go to other people's stadiums with a video
camera. Take their signs for an entire.
Game. Bring them back home, break
their signs, break their code, put it in your little book and
then tell everybody up or down was run or pass.
(07:29):
That's a bridge too far for us. It's a bridge too far for us,
because now you've taken the gamesmanship and the
sportsmanship out of it right towhich you can take the very
stupid hawk roll of hey, if you ain't cheating, you ain't
trying. This is a spectator sport.
OK. Spectator sport, you have
(07:50):
100,000 people at the big House that are going to watch games.
Got 100,000 people at Ohio Statethey're going to watch games
sure, but you've got 10s of millions of people that are
going to watch games each week and if they do not trust you to
put out a product that is rich with integrity, they're.
Going to. Turn it off because nobody wants
a rigged game. That's why we have these jokes
going around about the NFL as has rigged this game.
(08:14):
Or, you know, here's the script, what the kids be saying.
I always say this as the reigning NBA champions, the
world champions are in Oklahoma City.
Nobody at the NBA, you know, CIAwanted to see Indiana and
Oklahoma City play for the NBA title.
(08:34):
Nobody wanted that. You want LA, you want the
Lakers, You want the Celtics. Every year, period, it's going
to use your viewer numbers. You're going to get more of a
market share. People want to see the brands
play. I submit to you, it ain't me
that doesn't want to watch Southern Methodist and Boise
State play in the national championship game.
It's you who would rather watch Ohio State, Notre Dame.
Now, if Michigan got a cheat to get there, we got a problem.
(08:57):
We got a problem, right? Because we can't defend
cheating. Nobody wants to defend cheating
because the point of sport is your best against my best above
the board. What do you got?
OK, you can argue your way into I'm doing what I have to.
You can. You can do that.
(09:18):
But that's going to only work for you.
And while it's going to work foryou in the short term, and it's
going to hurt you in a long time, it's going to hurt all of
us. If the money goes down for
everybody else, guess who they're going to start pointing
the fingers at? And that's the one thing you
cannot do in our sport. Don't mess with the money.
Don't, don't, don't mess with the money, man.
You don't much like it. Is this the year that Ohio State
(09:51):
coach Ryan Day finally ends the losing streak to Michigan?
Or do we expect it to be more ofthe same in 2025 when they play
the game? What's up kinfolk?
(10:18):
It's RJ Young. I am not on a step mill.

I'm also going to take this opportunity to remind you got an

by now you know what time it is,right?
Ohio State, Michigan end of the season every year, November,
biggest game in the Big 10 each year.
The game as it has been known nationally forever.
(11:22):
Ohio State fans are everywhere and Michigan fans are
everywhere. Ohio State fans are not.
And there's been growing animosity between the two
basically since we started playing the game back in the
19th century, when 156 years of college football.
And it feels like for at least 130 of those, Ohio State and
Michigan had hated each other. And there has been a run of
(11:45):
streaks of losing and winning onboth sides.
Right now, we are currently in one.
Ohio State fans will be quick toremind you that they ran off
eight in a row before Jim Harbaugh could get one back in
2021. And during that stretch, we're
also talk about winning the National championship in
20/20/2014. But since Michigan beat them in
(12:08):
2021, beat them in 2022 and thenpunched their ticket over their
dead body in 2023 and then therethis really impressive and
leveling win depending on who you are.
Impressive if you are Michigan leveling if you were Ohio State
2024, right? So what do we have to go on here
(12:29):
aside from Sharon Moore has beena part of those Michigan teams
each and every year as offensiveline coaches, coordinator, as
head coach or acting head coach. But I want to do it, like I've
said, year 3 for him. But year 2, it depends on how
you want to look at it, right? We can go year 2, we can go Year
3, but I think it's more like a year three.
Mostly because when Jim Harbaughwas suspended as head coach,
(12:53):
Sharon Moore was the acting headcoach unless he was suspended.
And he was the guy on the sideline when Jim Harbaugh was
not in the building. When they played Ohio State in
2023 at the Big House and they got that win to punch their
ticket to the Big 10 championship and ultimately won
the national championship going 15.
And oh, sweeter still because again, they did it over Ohio
(13:14):
State's dead body. 2024 Ohio State wins the national
championship but loses to Michigan.
Now, never mind they also lost to Oregon.
It matters more to Michigan fansthat they went 15 and O with a
win against their rival, while Ohio State needed to go 14 and
two with a loss against their rival.
(13:35):
So if we are keeping score in a very narrow way, we would still
say Michigan's got an edge here.To which Ohio State would add,
hey, you won four and run, we won 8.
You got to get twice as many more wins over us before we
start actually feeling some heat.
But that's not really true now, is it?
Because while Sharon Moore has been a part of each one of the
teams that have beaten Michigan,Ryan Davis been the head coach
(13:56):
of each one of those teams that have lost to Michigan.
And that is really what we're discussing here.
We're not talking about can theywin the national championship
because the Big 10 is responsible for the last two
national champions and they are Ohio State and Michigan
respectively. We are talking about Sharon
Moore becoming what Jim Harbaughdid to end his career at
(14:17):
Michigan, which is nothing shortof a super villain as it
pertains to Ohio State. Football.
He. Loves to beat them.
He loved how they beat them and after the flag plant planting
stuff that happened last year. It is nothing more than
personal. It's always going to be
personal. Sharon Moore, a man who went to
(14:37):
college when I went to college, went to OU, play football at OU,
but wants to be remembered as Michigan man.
I will remind Michigan fans, yeah, you got to come to
Oklahoma and bring you $12 million.
True freshman quarterback, they played.
The liquor Football. To play against Brent Venables,
his defense. And then we'll don't see what it
do, baby. We don't see what it do.
But you know, this is the thing,I've been lately been fascinated
(14:58):
with DNA and philosophy as it pertains to college football
because we are in an era of suchchange.
Name, image, likeness, transfer portal, revenue sharing,
immediate eligibility and transfers paying high school
players before you get there going up from $0.00 made to
seven figures made in some cases.
So I'm looking at these programsthat have not only survived the
(15:21):
changes but have thrived despitethem.
So as an example here, I've usedGeorgia who has one 1000 yard
receiver in its history. One, it's Terrence Edwards in
2002 who had 1004 yards. So AJ Green, no.
Brock Bowers, no. Heinz Ward, no.
You know, keep going down the list.
George Pickens. No, they haven't had one.
(15:43):
Now, you can make all sorts of excuses as to why with a 3700
yard passer, 3500 yard passer that, you know, they spread the
ball around, whatever. But what it comes back to is
they run the ball and they play defense.
Put another way, Georgia went back-to-back 2122 without 1000
yard receiver cuz they didn't need one.
It's not in their DNA. It's not who they are, who they
are as a team that runs the balland sits on your chest.
(16:05):
To that end, Michigan is at justtwo 3000 yard passers in its
school history and then exactly the Mount Rushmore quarterbacks
at Michigan. What they do is run the football
and play defense. Now, when they had a brain and
Edwards, they threw him the ball, but they've had way more
Mike Harts and Blake Quorums andHassan Haskins then they have
(16:27):
Braylon Edwards. And that's also by design,
right? The Big 10, three yards in a
cloud of dust. I mean, there wasn't that long
ago that dudes from where I'm from, where we throw the ball
around would go. I would rather watch grass grow
then play Big 10 football because you're not going to
throw. It's not fun.
It's it's not fun unless you play offensive line or running
back, right? It's a place where Eddie George
can be a Heisman Trophy winner at Oklahoma.
(16:49):
That guy's going to be a quarterback.
That guy's going to run some version of spread.
You're also looking at a Michigan team that leaned in on
its identity when things were going badly.
They beat Ohio State without a quarterback in Columbus.
They baited Ohio State into playing their game physical and
up the middle. When Ohio State was built to
(17:10):
expose everybody on the outside, they had players Jeremiah Smith
on the outside, they had CarnellTate on the outside, Brandon in.
It's a mega Buca and then insidewhen you needed to go, there you
go quench on Jug and Trayvon Henderson.
But as soon as they decide to start throwing the rock to four,
things changed for them. But it took that loss for them
to. Lean in.
In all the ways that they should.
(17:31):
And that happened against Tennessee, happened hugely
against Oregon, hugely again against Texas.
Then, of course, Notre Dame national championship game.
But I think what you're going tosee is more the same from
Michigan and Sharon Moore. They're going to have a true
freshman starter, quarterback, He's going to be very talented.
But they also don't have any wide receivers that anybody
cares about and none that were productive last year.
(17:52):
Just our best receiver return with 260 yards receiving in a
season. But again, that's not what they
do. What they do is run the ball,
play defense. So they got Justice Haynes,
Jordan Marshall, they'll be great on the offensive line.
And wait, Martindale had that defense ready to play.
What's fascinating about this rivalry and why I wanted to do
(18:13):
this topic is Ryan Day has done it a lot of different ways.
He's wanted to run the ball and run the ball and run the ball,
especially early in the season. And he had to get beat, be
forced to throw the ball. And this is a man who came in to
basically modernize the offense. They went from running
basketball on grass to throwing it down the field.
And they got dividends paid, right?
Justin Fields, Dwayne Haskins, CJ Stroud, but he's always
(18:37):
wanted to run the football and run it well, so much so that he
probably did it to the detrimentof Ohio State up until they lose
to Oregon. And then you kind of figure out
we we do have an edge out here we ought to use.
This is also a program that wasn't heavy on producing
outstanding wide receivers for some time.
I mean, in between first round of draft picks that were Garrett
(18:58):
Wilson and Chris Olave, Anthony Gonzalez and Ted Gant junior
like that's that's a chasm. Now you've got some great
receivers that come through, Michael Thomas being one of
them, but he was a second round pick.
KJ Hill is great, but he's seventh round pick.
The NFL didn't think that much of these players and you didn't
have a guy, a lot of guys playing wide receiver and
Scarlett Gray that caught a lot of passes.
Until Ryan Day gets there and Brian Hartline starts to turn
(19:21):
out some studs where you can't force the ball down the field
and get 4400 yard passers. And guys like CJ Stroud, you
know, damn near 4000 yard passerand Kyle McCord, 4000 yard
passer and Will Howard probably a 4000 hour passer and Julian
Sand. But as the identity has changed,
you've also seen them begin to lose to this team, Michigan that
(19:42):
knows exactly who it is no matter what.
Doesn't matter if Jim Harbaugh is the head coach, doesn't
matter if Sharon Moore is the head coach.
They know who they are. Now we don't know what, if any
punishment will come to Michiganand I'm not really concerned
about that here in this segment.I am saying it will be curious
to see just what identity Ohio State shows against Texas, what
identity Michigan shows against Oklahoma.
(20:07):
And then then it's party. Penn State is not going to be
the number one team in my 136, Far from it.
Not going to give away just where I got them ranked.
(20:27):
But we do need to talk about what it is that people think
they see in Penn State and what has actually transpired.
What's up kinfolk? It's RJ Young.
I am not on a step mill. If this is your first time
(20:48):
watching, adapt and respond, thank you for joining us here.
We talk college football year round.
If that is something you're into, go ahead and hit that
subscribe button. Like this video and answer the
question in the comments below. Is this the year that Ohio State
loses to Penn State? Is this the year that Penn State
wins the national championship? And if you think that that is
(21:09):
not the case, why in the Blue Hill would you rank the Nittany
Lions at the number one, number two, or even #3 team in the
country? I'm also going to take this
opportunity to remind you that we have an audio podcast on
Apple and Spotify. And I am still giving away
stickers to anyone who is willing to go to Apple and
(21:29):
Spotify. Leave us a five star review.
Once you do that, hit the link in the description below where I
will send you one of these stickers.
Just let me know what address you would like to send it to and
you get a personal thank you from me.
So Penn State is in what I thinkhas to be a win it or go home
kind of season. They are in the spot that Texas
(21:50):
is in, frankly. You have put together a roster,
you have put together staff thatis built to win the 2025
national championship. Even in this day of revenue
share, name, image and likeness.Immediate transfers, excuse me,
immediate eligibility after the transfers.
All of it, right? We've never seen the sport be
more flush with opportunity thanit has now.
(22:13):
Yet still, we're waiting on PennState to breakthrough,
particularly in the games Franklin era, in a way that
responds with them or I say, excuse me, in a way that leads
to them winning the national championship.
So what do we have at Penn State?
OK, well, we got James Franklin, who's back 2024 with a team
that's mostly the same from lastyear.
That includes Deny, Dennis Sutton, Drew Aller, Nick
(22:36):
Singleton, K Tron Allen. They've added a couple of
product at wide receiver that I really like. 15 starters from
that team last year. Returned to Happy Valley this
year with the help of a little bit of name, image and likeness
of money. As you've seen all across.
Andy Codonicki is back for year 2.
Jim Knowles is in for year one, but that is last year for me.
The best defensive coordinator in the country who's putting in
(22:58):
a system that they already know 425 and he's going to coach the
hell out of it. They're going to have dudes on
the perimeter. They're not going to have Tyler
Warner, but I don't think that'sgoing to matter as much as it
did last year because they will have more guys that drew out.
They can throw the football too,and that's all fine.
That's all well and good. I think that is a top ten team.
There's no argument there. This is one of the 10 best teams
(23:20):
in college football year in, year out.
They're just there, but that's where I draw the line.
I draw the line there because I can't really trust a team that
has gone OH and seven against Ohio State and Michigan the last
seven times they played them, and OH and six versus Ohio State
(23:44):
in the last six years. And yes, Ohio State is on the
schedule November 1st this year,as I'm very certain that both
Ohio State and Penn State fans know.
And that game is going to have so much to say about how we feel
about both Ohio State and Penn State heading into College
Football Playoffs Election committee rankings.
(24:04):
Problem that I have, not just with James Franklin's Penn State
and it's Ohio State Michigan resume as of late again, O and
seven combined over the last four years.
It's that James Franklin and Penn State are one in 15 against
top five AP opponents. That means they've lost 14 of
(24:30):
their last 15 matchups with top five opponents.
By definition, to win a nationalchampionship, you have to beat a
top five opponent. And if you are one in 15 against
top five opponents, I'm not going to rank you that highly.
That's asinine. That's ridiculous.
(24:52):
The only argument that you are going to see for anybody ranking
Penn State one through 5 is thatthey're due.
Cool bro. Rent is due come January.
Hell or high water. And unlike Penn State, my checks
don't bounce. I'm not betting on a team that
has shown me over and over. Again when it is.
(25:15):
Time to play Oregon, When it is time to play Ohio State, When
it's time to play Michigan, whenthey're good, when it is time to
play Notre Dame. They can't get it done.
You beat up on Boise State? Good.
For you. It's Boise State, man.
That's Fiesta Bowl championship against Boise State.
Nobody but nobody expected BoiseState to win the national
(25:39):
championship in 2024. Nobody but nobody expected
Southern Methodist to win the national championship in 2024.
Nobody but nobody expected Indiana to win the national
championship in 2024. These are teams that made the
playoffs along with Penn State. These are teams that acquitted
(26:02):
themselves all very well. In the regular season.
I would argue Indiana had a better season than Penn State
did last year by virtue of two things.
Both of their losses came to theteams that played in the
national championship, Ohio State and Notre Dame.
(26:23):
That's it. Penn State lost to Ohio State
and Oregon in the Big 10 Championship.
Moreover, Ohio State beat Oregonlike they stole something with
Grandmommy. Switch off the Peachtree.
In the Rose Bowl. Which, by the way, is supposed
to be a place where Oregon feelsvery comfortable.
(26:46):
I can't make that work. I can't make that work.
I can't make that work. I don't care that you beat up on
literally everybody else. You got a really big game
against Oregon. They're coming to you.
You're the toughest game on their schedule.
You need to win that game to winsome favorite.
Here you do. And you need Oregon to be a top
(27:06):
five opponent when you play them.
So that you. Can get this number back up to
500 as quickly as you possibly can.
But that's just it though. Penn State doesn't play a lot of
top five teams, and usually whenthey do, their names are Ohio
State and Michigan. And then you get to play Notre
Dame in a game. We think you've got everything
you need to win it and you got aquarterback and Drew Allard, who
(27:27):
hasn't beaten anybody we care about.
Who is their big win? Utah.
What big game has he won? Boise State in the playoff?
You kidding me? It came down to quarterbacks.
Make it a play in the College Football Playoff semi final
(27:48):
2024. Riley Leonard came in and out of
the game, made a play. Steve and Jelly.
Came in and out of the game, made a play.
Drew Allard threw the game away, gave away the store, had a
chance to go win it. But in the tight moments, in
(28:10):
winning time, Drew Reiler shrunk.
Show me Tyrese Halliburton over there at Penn State and then
talk to me, OK? Show me Jalen Brunson over there
at Penn State and then talk to me.
Show me Jeremiah. Smith over at Penn.
State and then talk to me. Who do you have that is your
beater EA Sports college football 26 came out today and
(28:35):
yours truly is playing it by theway, talk is cheap.
These hands is free ready to eatfor everyone come and take it
Mullen lobby plebes. I'm on there.
That said, I always got to play and I always got a player that
I'm going to go to. I know what I'm going to do
against good competition. I know where I'm going to go
with the football and everybody says they want to be Kobe.
(28:59):
Some of y'all absolutely using Kobe's name in a way that you
shouldn't be because you ain't earned it.
Mama mentality this Mama mentality that none of y'all
bleed like this. None of y'all been laying out
like this. None of y'all had to go out and
get it. And I don't mean you ain't
working, I mean you ain't practicing.
I mean when it's. Time to go.
When the lights is on, when you got absolutely this shot and
(29:23):
this shot alone. Can you hit it?
Penn State hasn't. They missed that shot.
They missed it against Notre Dame, they missed it against
Oregon, they missed it against Ohio State.
That's three chances in 2024 that they fumble.
So no, I don't think this is theyear that Penn State gets past
Ohio State. I dare y'all to prove me.
(29:46):
Wrong.
